The importance of voting I want to express my most sincere gratitude to the voters of the 30th Congressional District who cast their votes for me during the recent Democratic primary election. Please know that I will continue to be a principled and fierce advocate on your behalf in Washington. I will work to ensure that all Americans receive affordable healthcare, that Medicare and Medicaid are protected, that senior citizens and children are treated fairly and that our nation adopts sensible and responsible firearms legislation. Ever since I became your elected representative in Washington, DC, I have felt a sacred obligation to do the best that I could to safeguard and promote your interests in the United States House of Representatives. It has not always been easy, but I have persevered because I have believed in each of you and you have believed in me. We live in very serious times which require the commitment of very serious people who are willing to make personal sacrifices for the common good. You have supported me, and I want you to know that you can count on me to protect your interests, and those of your families. In North Texas, the 2018 primary witnessed an increase in the number of people that decided to exercise their duty to vote. During the past four years, the number of voters in our party has doubled. This is a tremendous achievement for our country, our state and our nation. While the figures are encouraging, we must remember that voting is a privilege.
The history of our country is laced with the heroic sacrifices of those who lost their lives in the noble struggle to win voting rights for all people. In the general election this fall, it would be more than fitting if all of us encouraged those who did not participate in the primary to vote for those whom they would like to represent them in the chambers of government. Looking across our country, we must realize that there is an assault on the rights of minorities, seniors and young people to vote. Restrictive voter identification laws have been passed by many state legislatures, including Texas, whose members are unsettled by progressive and people-centered politics. We must not allow these legislators to win. Their objective is to take America backwards. To defeat them, we must vigilantly exercise the right to vote, and fully participate in all elections. Many of those who marched and were physically beaten to win voting rights are no longer with us. They competed their historical duties by demanding that they, and those that followed them, be allowed the right to vote. Now is the time for those who remain to honor the memories of those who came before us. We must continue to vote, and to urge others to do so. In years to come history will herald the rightness of our cause. And those that follow us will applaud our example. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson represents the 30th Congressional District of Texas.

MY TRUTH
By Cheryl Smith Publisher
This is not the first time that I have written about a man I love. Hiawatha Williams is so special. I love his spirit, work ethic, sincerity, intelligence, and love for his wife. Mr. Williams, who is the owner of Williams Chicken, has a giving heart and Williams Chicken is a great corporate citizen. He supports his employees, the communities where the restaurants are located, educational institutions, and other businesses and organizations. Remember when he tried to address the food desert in Oak Cliff by opening a supermarket?

scribes to one of my manYou just gotta love this man! I believe he sub- tras, “don’t let anyone work harder for you than you are willing to work for yourself;” meaning he will go and pick up the same trash he expects you to pick up and he doesn’t mind getting covered in flour, mopping the floors or manning the drive-thru. He’s the kind of man any parent would want their daughter to bring home. Recently Mr. Williams was the speaker at the 10th anniversary of the Greater Southwest Black Hiawatha Williams and Cheryl Smith at Southwest Dallas County Black Chamber Chamber of Commerce’s of Commerce’s 10-Year Anniversary 10th anniversary celebra-
tion. Anytime I can hear words of wisdom from someone as phenomenal as Mr. Williams, I savor the experience and thank Chamber President Linda Gray for inviting him. In his remarks, he was candid and inspiring as he discussed the state of Black businesses. He provided several teachable moments in a message that was challenging, faithbased and thought-provoking. Many nodded their heads in agreement as he talked about the benefits of teaching our children to be respectable, hardwork-
I Messenger ing and spiritually-grounded. The Paul Quinn College alum said he wanted to create at least 10 other Hiawatha Williams, but he has failed. His failure, however, is one that we all must be held accountable for because while there are so many young people who want to do well and who want to learn, be mentored and grow under stewardship before moving into a position of influence and responsibility; there are also those who don’t want to work for anyone else, if at all. And worse, there are those who think they came out of the womb knowing everything and therefore you can’t tell them anything. Sadly there are still the others who have no use for those who came before them. There is a total lack of respect for elders and this is totally not the way our children should be. Now, why are there so many unemployed young black men and women when Williams Chicken needs hard-working individuals who will show up on time; perform all duties, be courteous to customers and co-workers; use idle time wisely; and, take ownership of the business by doing whatever is necessary to make the business flourish. What have we done to our children? Have we pampered them so much that they would rather have instant gratification in the form of things being given to them rather than working for the same? I get excited when I talk to young brothers and sisters, and there are many, who are laboring, researching, studying and learning how to do, become and excel. What’s wrong with building a foundation
that is grounded in developing an impeccable work ethic? Still there are others who want the “glory” without putting in the time and effort. Forget asking questions or working internships where you really learn and grow, then move on to do your own thing. Why is there no regard whatsoever for those who have been there and done that? What’s wrong with being an apprentice? We’ve created a culture of “leaders” and so few followers. It’s a good thing when I hear young people say they want to own their own businesses, but that does not mean that you jump on social media claiming to be an expert without ever doing the serious work. But, there’s a mentality that some share where lacking an iota of experience, they go into business for themselves. I recall professors in my industry who were challenged by students because straight out of college they were in the classrooms teaching. Students wanted to know where was that “experience” and what news-

rooms had the professors worked in? Valid questions for any profession, I believe. Before founding Williams Chicken in 1987, Mr. Williams worked for another chicken franchise for almost 20 years. I get the feeling he was well-prepared by the time he stepped out on faith. Williams Chicken deserves overwhelming support. We have to start valuing the businesses that value us. And some who know me may want to point out that I “don’t even eat chicken.” True. But I love me some corn fritters! And guess what? There’s something at Williams Chicken that you can fall in love with too!

MALVEAUX: Conformist Clothing, RevoOne of the joys of watching the Black Panther film was enjoying the many ways Afrodescendent women were portrayed. We were protective mamas, and Angela Bassett’s signature lip curl said it all. We were technology-driven pesky little sisters. We were Warrior Queens. We were intimate and affectionate lovers. And we were resplendently attired. A clothing junkie could just about die and go to Heaven thinking of the ways that the Maasai tribe inspired uniforms, rocked by the shaved-headed sisters who were guards, could be translated into contemporary attire – a dress or a suit, perhaps? The wardrobed perfection of the Wakanda warriors also reminded me, in the words of the late Dr. Dorothy Irene Height (1912-2010) that “it’s not what’s on your head, but what’s in your head”. Height, the longest serving leader of both Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated (as the tenth president from 1947-1956), was also the longest serving President of the National Council of Negro Women (1956-1997). When I think of her, especially in the context of Black Panther, I am reminded that clothing is sometimes part of a weapons arsenal, and that Black women don’t necessarily need spears to win wars. Mary McLeod Bethune was Dr. Height’s predecessor at NCNW. Her image will be the first Black state image in the elusive Statuary Hall. Mrs.
The Last Word by Dr. Julianne Malveaux
Bethune was a warrior for Black people, and she was often humbly dressed. She didn’t need a spear, or a designer suit. She spoke to Presidents, especially to 32nd President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, about race matters, and because she had a relationship with Eleanor Roosevelt, she was heard. My favorite Mary McLeod Bethune story is one where she was walking into the White House when a guard greeted her by saying, “How are you, Auntie?” Her response, which should be entered into the “One Liners Hall Of Fame”, was “Which one of my brothers children are you?” In other words, Black women were not allowed the honorifics of “Mrs., Miss, or Ma’am”. That guard wanted to take Mrs. Bethune “home”, with the “Auntie” greeting, so connected to enslavement. Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of what is now Bethune Cookman University, did not blink before putting a racist in his place. Now, she will stand in her place in Statuary Hall. Each
state is allowed two statues of pivotal leaders in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall. Presently there are a dozen confederates, nine women, and not a single Black person in the Hall. In 2002, states were allowed to switch out their representatives, and Florida’s legislature agreed that Bethune was an important representative of the state, and that they were willing to switch a white man out for this Black woman. She will be the only Afrodescendent in Statuary Hall. Two more states are considering switch outs, so the count of women in Statuary Hall may grow. But no state seems to be considering switch outs in favor of Black luminaries. There has been a bust of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Capitol Rotunda since 1986. There is a statue of Frederick Douglas in Emancipation Hall at the Capitol Visitor’s Center. And there is a nine-foot statue of Rosa Parks in Statuary
Hall, not as a representative of a state, but as an icon lifted up by President Obama. She isn’t sporting a spear, because she doesn’t need one. She is depicted wearing the same clothes she wore when she refused to move to the back of the bus, the clothing that many Black women wore in those days, conforming to the politics of respectability, wearing the garments of the nonthreatening middle class while engaging in acts of revolutionary resistance. The ways that we, Black women, represent are important. We signal with our Afrocentric attire, with the kente draping our shoulders, with the Adinkra symbols that resonate in our jewelry. Black Panther reflects that and allows us to revel in the lushness (however distorted) of our African roots. Yet we must not forget the quiet revolutionaries who got as much done wearing hats and gloves (like Dr. Height) as other did with lifted fists and metaphoric spears. When we celebrate this Women’s History Month, we must celebrate those Black women who fought for us, no matter what they were wearing. Their resistance is the foundation for the work we must do moving forward. Julianne Malveaux is an economist, author, and Founder of Economic Education. RUN OFF FOR PRIMARY ELECTION IS MAY 22, 2018
That’s the motto of a restaurant I am going to highly recommend you go visit, Café Momentum. The place itself is located just off the DART rail in the heart of downtown across from Thanksgiving Square, and you never know what famous person you may run into while you eat. Legendary Rangers Play by Play Man Eric Nadel even hosts a “Sunday Supper Concert Series.” Their food is renowned, celebrated, and award-winning. It’s the staff, though, that makes the place. They are respectful, courteous, and knowledgeable. And they just got out of, or are caught up in, the juvenile system. A few years ago, an up and coming chef named Chad Houser came up with an idea: make the best food in town, and hire talented young people who need guidance and a second chance. “We provide a transformative experience through a 12-month post-release internship program for young men and women coming out of juvenile facilities,” according to his website. He treats them as more than just dishwashers, prep cookers, bussers, or servers. He is their
mentor, teacher and coach. His place is all about food, but has nothing to do with food all at the same time. I worked a shift their last year, and was amazed at how it felt more like a family meal than it did a business. Hours before the restaurant opened, the case managers, staff and students all sit down for a big meal. These case managers work directly with the young folks focusing on financial literacy, parenting classes, or anger management as the case may be. They eat, talk, go over lessons, and discuss the business for the night. They then go to their stations and get the place ready for the customers. Some serve, some cook, and some bus tables. All learn lessons they will have for the rest of their lives. They graduate with a full years-worth of restaurant business knowledge and skill, and with an impeccable recommendation from one of the best restaurants in town. The entire trajectory of their life has changed in an extraordinarily positive way because of Mr. Houser. Do him, a young man or woman you’ve never met, and society a favor - go to cafemomentum. org, reserve a table, eat, drink, and change a life. It’s a Life Death Life Thing After All, Now Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington
When you add the specter of death to faith, then as Christians we know the two are inextricably linked. Death holds a peculiar place in all this. Fundamental in this regard is that one must die spiritually and be reborn in the reality that Jesus overcame death, died on the cross and rose again in order for us to access eternal life as it was designed by the Father. You see this whole life death life thing can be confusing, which is exactly where faith comes in. Faith requires an understanding and then behavior that is consistent with that understanding. Physical life and death are but a part of a process, one element of spiritual eternity. To some believers this can be confusing enough. To the non believer, it can be an impossible barrier to overcome. For those who claim
faith in the reality of Christ, facts are based on faith and not necessarily sight. That’s why the events and happen-

Life teaches us that only a fool would allow themselves to be misused again. Therein lies my question about trust and what it means to you. Can you deal with this concept everyday? How much of a struggle are you having trying to trust people who have taught you not to give them the time of day? ings in the real world can be distorted by the events and happenings in the faith based existence of Christians. Death is one of those distortions. To the believer, death is life on many different levels. It is neither the beginning nor the end of anything but the continuation of an existence that has always been there. Now faith comes upon all of us at different times and in
one who has no faith in electricity. If you have faith in God, then your view of death by definition will be totally different from someone who doesn’t. It doesn’t make our anticipation of death any easier because real physical death is still an unknown adventure. I’m only bringing this up because I’ve had to look again at my faith as it relates to death. I’m at an age where
face of my faith that should embrace my own immortality. We are supposed to walk by faith and not by sight. To do so, demands a perspective, that recognizes a yet to be experienced consciousness that was the foundation for the teachings of Christ. The achievement of salvation and eternal life requires faith and action today. Therefore, I must begin my quest anew each and every day.
I must accept my faith anew each and everyday. I must continue my journey anew each and everyday. I have no choice. Faith demands that the reality of my own physical death not deter me from the path of trying to live this life according to principles laid down in the teachings of Christ. Some of that starts with the knowledge that death is merely a by product of the process of gaining eternal life and physical life as we know it is but a temporary gig. What you and I go through everyday is essential to completing the eternal life cycle. Faith therefore is tested everyday. Once established within you, then you operate by a different set of facts. Through faith, we actually believe all things a re possible because God is certainly capable of doing anything. That includes overcoming death. Death then is a step closer to God. With an estimated $41.1 million, Black Panther topped the weekend box office for the fourth straight week in a row. The new contender for the top spot, A Wrinkle in Time, finished second with domestic receipts of $33.3 million. Both are Disney Studio movies. Internationally Black Panther opened in China with $66.5 million pushing
the Marvel Superhero film to over $1 billion in box office receipts worldwide. Black Panther is the fifth film in the Marvel Comics Universe to reach that number and is just shy of cracking the top 20 of the biggest grossing movies of all-time. The amazing part of the story is that the film has hit these monster numbers in just four weeks in release.
Tomb Raider
This weekend Black Panther, which has been taking on all comers, will be challenged for the top spot by a new adventure movie, a rebooted version of Tomb Raider. http://www.hollywoodhernandezlive.com/
There's a new Tomb Raider and her name is Alicia Vikander. She replaces Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in a reboot of the action/adventure movie, which started out as a video game. So far, movies made from video games have never done well at the box office. I don't think this movie will do anything to reverse that trend; even though Vikander is a 2016 Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress in The Danish Girl. The new Tomb Raider is a hard-driving, rock and roll version of the character and that could be attributed to the movie's director, Roar Uthaug. He began his directing career by making music videos to his own music in his home country of Norway. This Lara Croft rocks! In Tomb Raider, Lara Croft is an heiress, living the life of a commoner, after refusing to inherit the family fortune, since her father's departure and assumed death. After discovering some clues that her father may still be alive, she travels to a mysterious island off the coast of Japan and
discovers that her father, the adventurer, is still alive and that for the past seven years he has been trying to protect the world from an inherent evil being unleashed on the world. Overall however, Tomb Raider is an entertaining treasure hunt, adventure movie that is filled with plenty of green screen special effects and some pretty cool fight scenes. The movie is rated PG-13 and has a run time of 1 hour and 56 minutes. Alicia Vikander makes the movie watchable. She has a tenacious spirit and is easy to root for in the movie. There are some pretty unrealistic scenarios in the film, but what would you expect from a "video game movie?" And the entire movie is an obvious set up for the next sequel, but it's a decent popcorn chomping movie that you can take the whole family to. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate Tomb Raider a LARGE. http://www.hollywoodhernandezlive.com/

A Weighty Issue With My Wife Ask ALMA Dear Alma,
Before I begin, let me say upfront that I love my wife. That said, in the years since we wed, she has gained considerable weight. When we eat out, she stuffs herself like a pig and never misses a chance to order desert. When I hint that she might forgo the sweets, she calls me a killjoy. On top of all of this, she refuses to do any exercise that requires her to break a sweat. Sure, I’ve gained weight, too, but no one would ever accuse me of being fat. How do I talk with my wife about this without making her feel self-conscious or unattractive? Despite the extra pounds, she’s still the apple of my eye. Friends say I’m asking for trouble.
E.P.; South Carolina
Ahhh, yea E.P. And they’re right…almost. It all depends on your delivery. Confronting a woman about her weight can be as psychologically risky as a woman talking to her man about…well, you know. Here’s my confession: I, too, gained weight over the years while my husband diligently maintained his well-groomed looks and muscular physique. What turned me around, you
asked? Picture this: Dayton, Ohio 2008. We were at Aunt Prevella’s 70th birthday party and cousin Lelar was taking pictures. Long story short, she took a picture of me, a side view. While looking through the photos on her camera, like the Isley Brothers I asked, “Who’s that lady?” Her answer:
you decide to broach the topic, it has to be her decision to make a lifestyle change. So let’s come up with a plan, Stan. I suggest you follow the example of cousin Lelar. Approach this subject as a health issue and not a weight-gain problem. When the moments right, let her know you’re concerned about her health and the few extra pounds she carrying. She knows what that means. Talk about planning fun activities for the two of you, like daily walks hand in hand after dinner, making more time for whoopee (which burns calories) and maybe joining a gym. Whatever she likes that gets her moving. I personally enjoy hand-dancing. Ask her about joining a bowling team or taking tennis lessons. Be creative. You hold the power to make this an encouraging conversation. Be kind with your words. Remember, it’s about reaching new goals set for living a healthier lifestyle and getting your “Boo” back in shape. Assist her on a successful journey. It’s all lies in your delivery…. Alma
When I hint that she might forgo the sweets, she calls me a killjoy. On top of all of this, she refuses to do any exercise that requires her to break a sweat. “That’s you.” In the parking lot later on, she stepped to me lovingly, sister to sister, and said, “What’s going on with you, girl? You’ve got to do something; your health is at risk.” She was right and hooked me up with nutritionist Roxanne Koteles-Smith, founder of the Food Wisdom program located just outside of Asheville. The weight came off so fast my coworkers thought I had undergone gastric bypass surgery. Trust me when I say I know how your wife is feeling. She knows she’s overweight, and this just may be the motivation she needs to do something about it. Even if

In Memoriam - Anthony D. Armstrong Anthony D’Lance Armstrong was born in Dallas, Texas on March 13, 1988, to Cecil and Beverly Wilkes Armstrong. He was educated in DISD public schools where he attended Albert Sidney Johnson Elementary, Oliver We n d e l l Holmes Middle and Roosevelt High Schools. Anthony was known as “Pooh” by his family and friends; but that was an abbreviated name from the one bestowed upon him, “Pooh Bear,” by his paternal grandmother, Joann Armstrong, who preceded him in death. A lover of football, Pooh, who lived in the heart of Cowboy Country, was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan. He also loved nachos, Frito pies, women, R&B music and fast-driving cars. On occasion Pooh attended Friendship-West Baptist Church. Born a day before his father began his comedy career; Pooh provided material that propelled Shuckey Duckey onto international stages. PQC Tigers - Score Big On and Off the Court By Andrew Whigham, III
Sports Information Director
Great things are happening on the Paul Quinn College campus by leaps and bounds. The winter sports (Men’s and Women’s Basketball) have completed their seasons. The Men’s team (Tigers) finished with their future looking bright. The Women’s team (Lady Tigers) continued to grow on the court as they gained the #1 seed in this year’s – 2018 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Women’s Division 1 National Tournament in Uniontown, PA. Coach Erica Henry in her second season as Head Coach of the Lady Tigers has compiled a 33-32 record. In her first season, Paul Quinn finished with a record of 10-20 and was awarded a #8 seed in the USCAA Women’s Division 1 National Tournament. This year, the Lady Tigers turned things around and finished 23-12. They were awarded the top seed in the USCAA Women’s Division 1 National Tournament. The Lady Tigers opened the tournament with a victory over St. Mary of the Woods, 78-91 on Wednesday - 2/28. With that victory, the Lady Tigers advanced to the second round where they defeated Silver Lake College, 62-85 on Thursday - 3/2. The Lady Tigers advanced to the Championship round to face Rochester College of Wisconsin. The championship game was full of excitement and suspense as the Lady Tigers fell short by the margin of 72-57 – 3/3. Te’Anna Washington and Amanda Cruz both had 14 points to lead the Lady Tigers in scoring against Rochester College. Although the Lady Tigers were disappointed with the outcome of the game, they continued to represent their school, city, family and supporters well. Their drive, determination and execution propelled them to higher ground. The Lady Tigers took care of their business on the court this season. The Lady Tigers and Tigers did exceptionally well off the court with numerous National USCAA Division 1 Awards. Congratulations to Coach Erica Henry as she was awarded the Coach of the Year. Te’Anna Washington was selected as a Second Team All-American and Amanda Cruz was selected as an Honorable Mention All-American. Six Lady Tigers were selected to the 2018 USCAA National All-Academic Team.

All American Honors
They were: Courtney Carter, Kierra Clines, Arteria McDowell, Destinee Medlock, Toriana President, and Te’Ana Washington. The Lone Tiger selected to the 2018 USCAA Men’s Division 1 National All-Academic Team was Marcel Holden. This season may not have had a storybook ending for the Lady Tigers, but their sticktoitiveness both on and off the court is a real indication of what it means to be a true student-athlete. I congratulate the administrators, faculty, staff, alumni and students of Paul Quinn College for a job well done.

Warney AmeriCup-MVP By Dorothy J Gentry Sports Editor Photo by Texas Legends and Clutchpoints.com
“I Feel That Luck Is Preparation Meeting Opportunity." – Oprah Winfrey Jameel Warney has been living that quote for two years. The 24-year-old is a patient man who has been preparing for this opportunity for two years; the opportunity to play in the NBA. “I just kept believing that I am an NBA player. I just needed to get my opportunity,” he said Sunday. “This is a like a dream right now. I’m just trying to take every day for what it’s worth,” said the soft-spoken and humble power forward from New Jersey. “It’s great to be here. I’m ready to help the team out and be a great teammate. “I’ll bring hard work and swag,” he added. I’m going to be one of the toughest guys on the team. I’ll be one of the best teammates around. “I’ll show I can play here.” ‘Here’ is in the NBA and more specifically, with the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs signed Warney, who has spent the last two seasons with the Mavs’ G-League affiliate Texas Legends, to a 10-day contract on Sunday, just in time for him to play against the Houston Rockets Sunday night. In eight minutes of action he grabbed four rebounds and scored five points. Pretty impressive for Warney, who admitted to a small case of the nerves “I was nervous to check in, but I do what I do best,” said Warney, who was 2-of-4 from the field. “I went to the glass, played hard, I tried to talk on defense and just tried to make my presence known in the few minutes I had.” The Mavs lost the game 10582 (the Rockets ARE the #1 team in the NBA) but Warney’s debut was positive and received glowing praise. “He was good. He understands how to play the game. He definitely
understands the game,” said Mavs rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. Head Coach Rick Carlisle added, “I like Warney. Warney is a winner. He goes into the game and is just immediately in the right place every time,” Carlisle said. “He got the ball in the basket a couple of times and he kept a couple of balls alive. He is a very underrated player.” The Mavs play five games, including last night’s Houston game, during Warney’s 10-day. Ironically enough, this includes two games in New York: Tuesday at Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks and Saturday at Barclays Center against the Brooklyn Nets. In other words: home. “This would mean a lot to me, but everything will be big for me,” Warney said of the road trip. “The game [Friday] in Toronto will be a big game for me.” Warney said his family and friends will be there and come out to the games in New York. “It will be a real fun experience for me,” he said, adding with a laugh: “If you’re my true friends you’ll come to both games.” The Wait and the Call-Up Even though he went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, Warney was always sure the time would come for him to show he belonged there. “It didn’t matter if it was this year or next year or five years from now, I just knew it was going to happen and I had to get ready for it,” he said. In four seasons at Stony Brook, Warney finished as the winningest player in program history. He also finished as the school's all-time leader in points (2,132), rebounds (1,275), blocks (275) and games played (135). Warney was named the America East Conference Player of the Year in each of his final three seasons at Stony Brook (2014-16). Upon graduation, he bypassed opportunities to play in Europe,
