Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie to sign book
The Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosts its annual D’Arts Extravaganza, celebrating the arts, Saturday, March 25, 2017 , noon - 5p.m. at the African American Museum, 3536 Grand Avenue, Dallas. Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, who serves as the 117th elected and consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church is this year’s featured author. A member and daughter of one of the 22 founders of Delta Sigma Theta, the Bishop will be signing her latest book, “The Big Deal of Taking Small Steps to Move Closer to God.” Also featured are Delta Author Toni Simmons, Delta Artist Tyra Goodley and artist Frank Frazier. There will also be Young Artist Workshops sponsored by Big Thought. The Extravaganza is free and open to the public. Bishop McKenzie’s historic election in the year 2000 represents the first time in the over 200-year history of the AME Church, a woman had obtained the level of Episcopal office. The firsts continue as she served as the President of the Council of Bishops, Chair of the General Conference Commission and was the Host Bishop for the 49th Session of the General Confer-
ence of the AME Church in June 2012 with more than 30,000 in attendance. Currently, she is honored to serve as the presiding prelate of the 10th Episcopal District, which is the entire state of Texas. Bishop McKenzie serves as the Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of Paul Quinn College. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Bishop McKenzie was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the inaugural President’s Advisory Council of the White House Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. She recently was invited to preach at the annual White House Easter Prayer Breakfast at the invitation of President Obama. Bishop McKenzie is the author of five additional books. The first two, Not Without A Struggle and Strength in the Struggle concern leadership and professional growth for women. Journey to the Well helps women seek new directions for personal growth and transformation following the footsteps of the Biblical Samaritan woman. Her book, Swapping Housewives, tells the stories of Rachel, Jacob and Leah and shares the 21st century implications for married and unmarried love. A revised updated version of Not Without A Struggle was released in 2012. In 2013 her newest book Those
Sisters Can Preach! was released. It includes 22 sermons as pearls of wisdom from nationally known preachers who happen to be women. Bishop McKenzie, well known as an electrifying preacher, has been honored for her leadership, community service, and outstanding achievements by a number of diverse civic, educational, business, and governmental organizations and leaders. She was named by Huffington Post as one of the 50 most powerful women religious leaders in the world.

It is because of Mr. Williams and Marvin Crenshaw that minorities have a larger voice in Dallas City Council. Trump’ll Never Be Right
QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall
Resident Trump would rather be right than make it right. Politicians need to quit asking the Resident to speak out against hate and hate crimes. The optics around Trump roundly expresses his views on race in very tangible and visible ways. Everything about this miscreant has White supremacy written all over it. If you want to know what he believes and what he thinks, just look around him. It's as simple as black and white. Or maybe just White! Trump doesn’t care about doing what’s right; he just has to be seen as having been right. Just start with that lily white, snow laden, angel food cake coalition of marginal billionaires and military brass that Trump calls a cabinet. He got the last Negro held at auction and the Asian wife of the Senate Majority Leader. And even with those two tokens, it still looks like the casting call for an audition of “Snow White Goes to Washington;” a movie we thought America would never endeavor to produce in mod-
ern times. But the visual of this clannish convocation Trump calls a cabinet, is a subliminal message that says that we can make America great again without diversity. We don't need no Coloreds or Mexicans; we don't need no women’s rights advocates, no gays or any other demographic that has not com-
pletely assimilated or sworn allegiance to the ideals of White male privilege. Donald Trump and his legion of doomsday spokespersons see themselves as the White man’s last stand. There are more than enough followers who are gleeful to latch on to the most lascivious acts of racism we have seen displayed publicly in 50 years. The emergence of Trump has moved the ambient noises of White America’s xenophobic trysts from backstage to center stage. This orgy is being televised. Acts of vile racism in Ameri-

ca have almost become passé over the past 22 months since Trump came down that escalator. (There was so much relative symbolism in Trump coming down rather than up the escalator that I can’t unpack it all right now). Even neighboring Canada saw a deadly attack on a Mosque by a perpetrator who claimed allegiance to Trumpism.
Donald Trump’s open and undeniable affection to the “AltRight” and the once flailing neo-Nazi nation has brought us the potential of a second Civil War, and we could be in the cold war phase at this moment. Donald Trump has had no public meeting that was not a sponsored, choreographed, campaign event. Why?... It's real simple. There is no major metropolitan or rural area whereby you could allow the general public to attend that the Secret Service could guarantee Trump or their own safety. He’s forced to live in a cage of his own mak-
ing. Donald Trump has created a massive legion of emboldened racists. But conversely he has codified an even larger number of Americans who hate him and them vehemently. Hell, I don't know of too many “real” black churches you could invite him to. Trump can't go into the barrios. He can't go into Chinatown in San Francisco or in New York. He wouldn’t be readily welcomed in many synagogues. And he doesn’t have the brains or the balls to visit a mosque and apologize for promoting Islamaphobia. Anyone can talk that hot ‘ish behind a “Wall,” but it takes a real man to take it to the streets. Let me channel Martin Lawrence: “Donald Trump is a fake and a fraud and a part time broad.” Donald Trump is smart enough to understand “The Art of the Deal.” He knows he can keep his base of rednecks by remaining racially pure and homogenous in all his appearances. He knows he can’t gain very much by being seen with minorities, gays or women who think for themselves. And Donald Trump, like too many of us would rather be right than make it right.

Appreciating Town Hall Meetings
Since the start of this 115th session
of Congress, you have probably seen multiple news stories about town halls across the country. For instance, just this past week, California U.S. Representatives Duncan Hunter and Darrell Issa hosted town hall discussions that were rather lively. But not every town hall is alike. In order to keep in touch with my constituents, I hosted a TeleTown hall earlier this month in which over 3,000 people dialed-in to discuss issues most important to them. From those callers, we fielded a number of excellent questions whose topics ranged from Planned Parenthood funding, to legislative measures to help the mentally ill, to political involvement on a grassroots level. Again, I want to thank all of those kind constituents who participated providing excellent questions and political curiosity. My only regret is that I did not have more time to spend with all of you. If you did not have the opportunity to call in, you can find audio highlights of the conversation on my webiste. It is important to understand the purpose of holding town halls. A town hall meeting is an event that gives a representative the opportunity to speak directly with his or her constituents. It is mutually beneficial for the representative and the constituents, because the representative can discuss what he or she is working on in DC and the constituents can tell the representative what the issues are that they care about the most. Now, unfortunately, town halls are most featured and discussed during times of great

In the same way that the Tea Party turned out in unprecedented numbers following the 2008 presidential election of Barack Obama, now activists are organizing in response to President Trump and his Administration’s initiatives. They are also turning out in significant numbers to these town halls across the country. I would like to note, however, that town halls are not always confrontational in nature. Often, they can be conciliatory or celebratory—they are not always argumentative in nature. people responsible for representing them. As previously mentioned, the number one responsibility of the representative during a town hall is to listen to their constituents. From what I observed during our conversation last week, a primary concern expressed by the people in district 30 was what is going to happen with their healthcare when the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or “Obamacare,” is repealed. Many are afraid they may lose healthcare coverage or their premiums will rise. It hurts my heart to say that, with the Republicans’ current healthcare replacement bill, that very well may happen. In a district report that my office released last week, we point out that 301,800 people in the 30th district who have employer sponsored health insurance could lose important consumer protections – like the prohibition on annual and lifetime limits and the prohibition on coverage exclusions for preexisting health conditions – if the ACA is repealed. As noted, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released numbers showing that 24 million people have the potential to lose their health insurance if the new Republican led healthcare bill, American Health Care Act (AHCA) is adopted. Because you called and expressed your concerns, I must reassure you of one thing—I will join my colleagues in fighting this replacement legislation that will ultimately take away many Americans’ healthcare. I am determined to fight in your best interest in the upcoming weeks.

Marriage & Money O’Jays, right! It’s helping me get my mind fixed and ready to answer your question, LOL. Some say it’s the root of all evil, money that is, I’m not sure if I agree. right or wrong way to do it. As long as you’re in agreement on what’s best for the two of you. Also agree to allow for spending money and you both have to stay within those allocated funds. That part requires a commitment, a bond of trust that can’t be broken It won’t be easy, you two need a serious sit down. Lay all your facts and concerns on the table. This is not a scolding regarding her spending, but a joint discussion about your future. Figure out and be honest where she lands between overspending and compulsion. If she’s a shopaholic, please, seek professional help. If she’s overspending because she thinks you guys have money to burn, it’s time to come up with a financial strategy. There’s an amazingly thorough money management column, written by Rodney Brooks for USA Today. He also has a book on Amazon titled, Is a Million Dollars Enough? It would benefit you guys to check it out. Again, agree to write down your financial goals and commit to them. I love that you stressed the love you have for your wife. Take a lesson from Rodney and learn new ways and methods, together, on how to manage your money. Good luck! Alma

Reader Advisory: The National Trade Association we belong to has purchased the above classifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer employment but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it is illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in US dollars. Toll free numbers may or may not reach Canada.
