Part 2 I was a talking to Ms. Thelma Youngblood one day and I said a cuss word. Now I have known Ms. Youngblood for almost 30 years and she is my elder so I immediately apologized. While she brushed aside my apology, I know she appreciated that I exhibited the home training that she knew I had in me. During a recent board meeting, I watched a young student approach board members who were 10, 20, 30 and 40 years older than her, but she still added a courtesy title overtime she addressed one of us. It was so refreshing because anytime I have watched young teens on the hit game show Family Feud address host Steve Harvey as, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Steveâ&#x20AC;? I want to reach inside the screen and give them a sampling of home training.

THE QUEEN OF SOUL AND RESPECT

Even using conservative numbers, Steve Harvey is old enough to be a grandparent of a teenager. Why do these children feel so comfortable addressing adults by their first names?

As a teenager, I can only think of two people I called by their first name and they were my God Parents, Charles and Liz. All other adults were called Ms., Mrs. and Mr. So and So.

I Messenger To me, Liz and Charles were terms of endearment and respect, when speaking to my Godparents. When Andre, Alayna, Annya, and Ayanna were young, they were given a choice of calling adults, Mr., Mrs., Ms., Aunt, or Uncle. I didn’t force the title on them. They could decide how they felt about a person and conduct themselves accordingly. There were no exceptions. One local deejay, who had become close to the family, said he didn’t want them to call him either courtesy title. He said, “Just call me ….” I told him “no that would not be happening.” If he didn’t want them to address him a certain way that I deemed appropriate, then they would not be allowed to talk to him at all. Just as I wouldn’t allow mine to call adults by their first name; I didn’t accept this practice from my friends’ children. But times have changed. Today children are allowed to conduct themselves as adults. When I was growing up children were seen and not heard, and came only when called. When my parents had company, that provided an opportunity for me to go outside, watch more television, read a book, or talk on the phone to friends. The thought of entering into their conversations, or sitting in the room looking in the mouths of grown folks was just something we did not do.

I’ll never forget a few years ago when a group of women were talking about pregnancy and I wasn’t contributing to the conversation because there was a child in the room. Much to my chagrin the nine-year-old decided to enter the conversation, declaring, “My mother was in labor for almost a whole day before she finally had to have a C-Section.” That was too much for me! I immediately exited the room, shaking my head. Excuse me if I don’t want to have grown-up conversations with children. Just like with the young female child, today when company comes some children will sit right up there in your face taking in every word and adding their commentary. I Messenger Media, the umbrella organization of Texas Metro News, Garland Journal and I Messenger, is implementing a policy where all men and women will be referred to by courtesy titles. No, this isn’t the widely accepted Associated Press style, but guess what, when you are operating from a position of power; you can make your own decisions and institute your own policies. Let me put this into context. There was a time when the mainstream press rarely wrote about positive colored, negro, Black people. There are still challenges today for some when writing about Africans or

African Americans and that’s why the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists still holds its popular “How to Get into the News without Committing Murder” workshop. A person of color could have multiple degrees but they were not referred to as Dr. They could be the president of a company or institution, but the title “president” was not inserted in front of their names. The person could be a pastor, reverend or priest but forget about seeing people of color getting respect. So although our young children run around calling their elders by names like they are best buddies, just as little white children have done for centuries; we feel a need to bring sanity to an ever-increasing degeneration of family values. I implore scriptwriters to stop portraying children cussing, reprimanding, and even fighting their parents. Stop infiltrating delinquent behavior into impressional minds. You see, you won’t be around when one of these children sass the wrong person! We must seize every opportunity to bring respect back into the family, schools, work places, and sadly, even religious institutions. Earlier this week the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, celebrated her 76th birthday. People will always remember her for that great song, RESPECT. In 2018, I ask you, what’s wrong with having a little respect?

Natalie Cofield: The Living Walker Legacy Nine years ago, when she was just 26, Natalie Cofield was looking for a mentor. A young woman with entrepreneurship hard-wired into her spirit, she was discouraged that many did not take her seriously and disheartened that she could not make the connections she needed to further her entrepreneurial mission. So she started reading biographies of businesswomen hoping to read up on the inspiration on the page that she could not find in real life. Madame C.J. Walker jumped off the page for Natalie, and she found a kindred spirit. Few names are more lauded in Black Women’s History than that of Madame CJ Walker. She was the first African American woman millionaire, it is said. The first to create a multi-level marketing platform. The woman who used herbs, hair knowledge, and a hot comb to create an empire. The woman who funded civil rights activity, and also boldly admonished the men of her era for their exclusionary attitudes. Because many of her eras dismissed her as a “mere” hairdresser, her business success did not get the attention it deserved. Thus, she disrupted Booker T. Washington’s National Negro Business League Convention in 1912 by demanding the microphone. She boldly told the gathered men that she “promoted myself” from the washtub to the kitchen to manufacturing. “I have built my own factory on my own ground,” she told the National Negro Business League. Natalie Cofield could not have found more fitting inspiration. Or, you can peruse the Walker papers, now donated to Indiana Historical Society. Villa Lewaro, the Madame Walker estate, has been restored and is part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is a monument to the spirit and tenacity of Black women’s entrepreneurship. You can also celebrate Madame Walker’s life and legacy by simply checking out the Walker’s Legacy website and joining the Walker’s Legacy community. When asked what she is most proud of about her work, Natalie Cofield says that she is proud that she never gave up on her vision, and that she put her whole heart into the work. She sounds like her mentor, Madame C.J. Walker, who said that steadfastness and persistence are the keys to success.

Pacific Rim: Uprising Pacific Rim: Uprising doesn’t offer much in the way of things like a script or excellent acting. What it does offer is an exciting, special effects movie that is a combination of Power Rangers, Transformers and any previous Godzilla movie you have ever seen. A new generation of Jaeger pilots battle against new Kaiju monsters that come out of the sea to release their fury upon mankind. The fight scenes are incredible but the cast is nothing special. With the subtraction of Idris Elba, who starred in the original movie, the actors are a definite downgrade. Relationships simply are not

fleshed out enough but, if you enjoyed the action of the original movie, you’ll find this one entertaining as well. The downtime is boring and the action scenes are thrilling. On balance, that gives Pacific Rim: Uprising a MEDIUM on my “Hollywood Popcorn Movie Scale.” The movie, which runs 1 hour and 51 minutes, is rated PG-13. It also makes a very obvious statement at the end of the movie that says there will be another sequel. The movie has all of the qualities of an old Saturday morning cartoon. However in IMAX it is a lot more fun. Take your kids. They will enjoy the movie. However, as a movie for grownups, Pacific Rim: Uprising leaves a lot to be desired. http://www.hollywoodhernande-

How’d They Catch Mark Conditt, the Austin Bomber?

After nearly three weeks of terror, law enforcement personnel tracked down the man responsible for the senseless killings of Draylen Mason and Anthony Stephan House in Austin. 4 others were injured by his bombs. Before the bomber could be taken into custody, he committed suicide by blowing himself up inside his car surrounded by a cavalcade of law enforcement. Officers recovered his cell phone containing what’s been described as a 25 minute confession, the contents of which have not been disclosed. Authorities also revealed they discovered a list of additional future targets. Those potential targets might have become a reality if the Bomber parked in a different spot at Fed Ex a few days earlier. I was always fascinated and humbled by the diligent and methodical efforts of investigators in gathering clues in order to solve crimes. I worked for years as the Chief of the Cold Case Unit at the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, and got to partner with some of the best crime-fighting minds around. The work is difficult, monotonous, and sometimes

futile. But these diligent officers capitalize on a suspect’s slightest mistake masterfully. Such was the case in Austin. Authorities were able to piece together a license plate from the Fed Ex shop the Bomber mailed one of his deadly packages. The video also showed he was wearing distinctive pink gloves officers determined were sold by Home Depot. They then watched hours of surveillance video from Austin-area Home Depot Stores, eventually pinpointing when the bomber obtained those gloves. That transactional information also allowed them to obtain a search warrant for his google search history. That history revealed searches officers consider “suspicious.” They were also able to develop cell phone information that eventually lead to locating the suspect and his final standoff. Law enforcement surrounded him in droves that night - both in show of personal force and in show of the force of undeniable proof borne from diligence and dogged preparation. I’ll keep you updated as the investigation continues into the bomber’s motives and into whether anyone else is criminally responsible for these bombings as an accomplice. Dr. Martin Luther King delivered a monumental speech entitled; “Remaining awake through a Great Revolution.” He originally delivered it at Morehouse College in 1958 and remixed it in 1965 for Oberlin College. King’s chaotic chronology during 1964 may have called for revisiting parts of the speech. “I’m sure that you have read that arresting little story from the pen of Washington Irving entitled Rip Van Winkle. The thing that we usually remember about this story is that Rip Van Winkle slept 20 years. When Rip went up the mountain a sign had a picture of King George III of England. When he came down the sign had George Washington, the first president of the United States. This reveals to us that the most striking fact about the story of Rip Van Winkle is not that he slept 20 years, but that he slept through a revolution. While he was peacefully snoring up on the mountain, a great revolution was taking place in the world that changed the course of history.” The year began with “Doc” being named Time Magazine’s “Man of the Year.” King

King obliged Hayling and dispatched SCLC operations to Florida’s Panhandle. That Panhandle region is still

On November 18th, Hoover “outted” King as “the most notorious liar in the country.” A week later he added that the SCLC was “spearheaded by Communists and moral degenerates.” King sat down with Hoover in person two weeks later. The year ended the way it began though. By mid-December, King received the Nobel Peace Prize and promised “every penny” would be used in the ongoing civil rights struggle. By any standard, King had a great year. Thirty-nine months later, King was forced into an eternal sleep at age 39. When King went up the mountain in 1968 there was a sign with LBJ’s picture. Fifty years later and he’s mystified at the sign with Donald Trump’s likeness. From boys to men

As a man, it’s always hard to write about women. It shouldn’t be; however, you risk the chance of not knowing what to say. More than likely you will say too much or not enough. With that being the challenge, let me begin by saying men have heard the roar of an empowered sisterhood. I grew up in an unrepentant sexist world in the sixties and seventies. As a young man, I was influenced by the rights and privileges borne to me as a boy. Let’s face it, as a boy you could be called “mannish,” and people would laugh at you, because it is expected that boys were little men with all their flaws. I could be loud and abrasive as a boy, and people would say, “Boys are just being boys.” But assertive girls were told to be more ladylike. Girls were taught that boys were to be aggressive

and assertive and girls were to defer to boys — even if the girls came in first place. To be a girl, you were taught to defer to the boys. As I transitioned from being a boy to man, not much changed. In the hiring of employees, young men were hired first over young women because employers feared lost production. It was believed that because women bore children, they would become a liability. As we both, young men and women climbed the corporate ladder, men were looked first for promotions. It was said that women couldn’t handle the stress due to their menstruation cycles. Yeah it’s true. That’s the word in the suites of corporate America as men had another drink. “Women just couldn’t measure up,” they said. That was the labor force I entered in 1980. The evolution of man probably began with a woman telling a caveman not to play with fire. My true evolution as a man began with having four daughters. As I got older I wondered what type of workforce they would enter. My sensibilities changed not necessarily with the times but in my role as a father and

protector. I could not protect them as I sent them into a world dominated by patriarchy. Would they enter a workforce where they would be valued by their intelligence and hard work? Would they be limited by being too intelligent for those men who were not as talented? Would their physical attractiveness make them unwilling targets of unwanted sexual advances? These are not the issues my son would ever encounter. Women have come a long way since 1980. When I entered the workplace, there were some jobs in my industry women didn’t do. Now they run entire departments, divisions, and companies. My daughters have fought battles in which I won’t have to say “me too.” They have made it through the fire. However, it’s a new day and I wonder what fires my granddaughter will have to fight. Edward Gray is a talk show host, social commentator and writer.

NABJ remembers Founder and former President Les Payne The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) honors the legacy of NABJ Founder and former President Les Payne - an award-winning journalist who consistently broke barriers during his indelible career that spanned more than four decades. Mr. Payne died on Monday night at the age of 76. Mr. Payne was a trailblazer in journalism, having been a role model for many journalists who came after him. NABJ President Sarah Glover said Payne’s work was both inspiring and encouraging. “NABJ Founder and President Les Payne was a legendary journalist whose eloquent writing brought passion and truth-telling

to an industry too often tone deaf to the issues impacting communities of color. Payne fought to change that with NABJ’s other illustrious founders,” said Glover. “Founder Payne’s bold words and writings showed us why it’s important to be a present black journalist in the newsroom every day. He was a quiet, courageous and loving leader. His legacy lives

on in us.” Mr. Payne’s wife, Violet, shared how her late husband was a mentor to younger journalists, and that he maintained high hopes for them. “I feel very humbled to have been his wife. I enjoy hearing about all the people that he inspired. He had such great hope for the younger generation to carry on,” she said.

Today, we honor Mr. Payne by noting a few of his most reputable accomplishments. A faithful servant Mr. Payne served as an information officer for the U.S. Army, running the Command newspaper which was distributed to troops in Vietnam. As one of the founders and former presidents of NABJ, he was a long-time advocate for journalists of color, having worked tirelessly to improve newsroom equality and employment practices. SACRAMENTO—Angry and frustrated residents are demanding answers after a police-involved shooting left an unarmed, Black man dead last week. Stephon Clark, 22, was fatally shot in his Meadowview area backyard Sunday, March 18 after two Sacramento Police Department (SPD) officers shot at him more than 20 times. Local law enforcement officers were in the area after receiving a 911 call about a man suspected of breaking into vehicles in the area. A Sacramento County Sheriff ’s Department helicopter spotted a man they believed to be that suspect, described as being 6’1”, thin, and wearing a black hoodie and dark pants, in a backyard and they directed SPD officers on the ground to that location. Helicopter personnel also communicated to officers that the suspect had picked up a “toolbar” and broke a window to a residence. Officers who had been canvassing other yards, eventually entered the front yard of a home on the 7500 block of 29th Street and observed Clark, along the side of the residence. Officers commanded Clark to stop and show his hands. According to a statement released by the SPD, the officers say Clark turned and advanced towards them while “holding an object which was extended in front of him.” The officers said they believed Clark was pointing a gun at them and, “fearing for their safety,” they fired their duty weapons. Police admit they only found a cellphone, not a gun or a “toolbar,” on the scene. On Wednesday, March 21 the SPD released video footage of the interaction from the body cameras worn by both officers, as well as audio from the initial 911 calls and dispatch. Chief Daniel Hahn, the city’s first African American police chief, has vowed to be transparent in such incidents since he took the position last year. Sacramento City Council policy on Police Use of Force mandates that the SPD release video and audio associated with police-involved shootings to

Stephon Clark the public within 30 days. The policy was adopted after a mentally ill Black man, Joseph Mann, was shot and killed by SPD officers in Del Paso Heights in 2016. The three-day turn around in the Clark shooting is much quicker than has happened in years past. “SPD acknowledges the seriousness of this incident and the impact it has on our community,” reads one of two statements on the shooting, released by the SPD last week. “We are committed to providing timely information, communicating openly, and working directly with our community, so that they have a full understanding of what occurred,” the statement continues. The body camera videos are each about 17 minutes long. While neither officer has been identified, one appears to be White or Hispanic and the other African American. In the graphic video, the officers don’t appear to identify themselves as police officers, but simply say, “Hey, show me your hands, gun” and seconds later “Show me your hands, gun, gun gun,” before one shoots off 10 rounds and the other, at least 11. Officers waited five minutes for backup to arrive and can be heard telling Clark, who was unresponsive, to show his hands. One officer tells another to grab a “non-lethal” from a police vehicle so they can “hit him a couple of times with that” before approaching him. When officers did approach Clark’s body, he was laying face down on the ground.

They handcuffed him and began CPR. He was pronounced dead on the scene by the Sacramento Fire Department. The use of non-lethal weapons, such as rifles that shoot bean bags at suspects, were part of reforms fought for by local activists after the Mann incident and the shooting death of another Black man, Dazion Flenaugh; the mandatory use of body cameras was also part of the reforms. “You authorized non-lethal weapons. Why weren’t non-lethal weapons used in this instance?” Richard Owen, co-chair of the Law Enforcement Accountability Directive, asked of the city council during a meeting where the Stephon Clark shooting incident was discussed. Owen continued: “Did Mr. Clark really have to die? It doesn’t seem that way to the community.” Owen, a retired school principal, also questioned why officers waited before attempting to save Clark’s life. While Owen said he’d hold off for the video to reveal the facts, he addressed some of the most salacious rumors that have been circling in the community regarding the shooting. “If this man was shot in the back and shot 20 times, that’s excessive force without question,” Owen said. Chief Hahn, who was at the meeting to read an official SPD statement, and answer questions, said those elements of the incident are currently under investigation. Family members are also asking why the body cameras were muted for a period of time. Black Lives Sacramento leader Tanya Faison also spoke out at this week’s city council meeting. “I’m sick of seeing people die that look like me,” Ms. Faison said. She called for the firing of the officers involved in the shooting, as others in the audience voiced their agreement. “I know the City Manager doesn’t have the power to convict, but he does have the power to fire,” Ms. Faison said. “You need to start firing these officers when they kill us in the

I Messenger streets. It needs to happen. I’m tired of this.” Also concerning members of the public is how police interacted with Clark’s family after the shooting. The home where the shooting occurred was that of his grandparents, with whom he’d been staying. His grandmother, Sequita Thompson, told local media that the police questioned her for hours about what she’d heard, but was never told that her grandson had been shot. It wasn’t until she looked out of a window that she saw him on the ground, dead. Local and national Black leaders have vowed to demand justice for Clark and his family. Black Lives Matter and Rev. Les Simmons of South Sacramento Christian Center spearheaded vigils and rallies, where those who knew Clark called him a loving son and father of two young boys, who didn’t deserve to die. The Rev. Al Sharpton says he’s talked with Clark’s mother, Sequette Clark, and that he’ll visit Sacramento in the coming weeks. Rev. Sharpton has spoken out against the police involved deaths of Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri; Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota; and Eric Garner on Staten Island, New York. “It is an atrocity that an unarmed young man was shot at twenty times in his own backyard and shows the urgent need in these times for intervention against police misconduct. We will call for a complete and thorough investigation into this young man’s death,” said Rev. Sharpton, the founder of the National Action Network, in a statement. Sacramento NAACP President Betty Williams has vowed to “stand

guard to (ensure) there is a just outcome for all parties involved.” In a statement, Ms. Williams says she’s calling for an independent investigation and has asked the FBI to get involved. “The NAACP is concerned with the tragic loss of life which continues to plague our nation,” Ms. Williams said. The recent incident in Sacramento that took the life of Stephon Clark and similar ones throughout the nation, occur all too frequently. “While we respect the role of (SPD) in our community, these shootings have angered, frustrated and fright-

ened people in our community. We are also frustrated with the justice system which fails to indict (officers in) such killings.” The shooting is being investigated in conjunction with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, the Sacramento City Attorney’s Office and the City’s Office of Public Safety Accountability. Per department policy, the two officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave. NOTE: Alton Sterling was killed by Louisiana Police Officer Blane Salamoni, outside of a convenience store in July 2016. Earlier this week, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry announced that Salamoni and another officer would not face any charges. Mr. Sterling joins a long list of Black men killed by white officers, with the same result.

STEAL AWAY, set in 1930’s Chicago, evolves around five upstanding churchwomen who raise funds to send young Black women to college by holding bake sales. In spite of the Great Depression, they aspire to offer more scholarships to promising women in their community. What lengths will they go to in an effort to keep their noble venture alive – hold a church fundraiser, bake more pies, or rob a bank? “Through humor, STEAL AWAY,

issue of enormous ramifications. Yes, it could easily end your marriage if not handled with divine intervention. You say you’re a Christian and so was your husband when you met and married, but now he wants to change his stance and he no longer believes in God. Will he consider faith-based counseling? Listen closely as I speak softly, not tilting the taste of judgment—I think you need to be truthful about his change of belief and try to remember what life experience u-turned him towards a different direction. Who, when, where and how was someone else able to grab hold of him when you weren’t watching. I’m not blaming you, oh no, that’s not my intent. I’m merely trying to show you that one doesn’t pick a Savior in one day. We’re too savvy for that nowadays. Folks will research everything on the Internet. Unfortunately, the information no longer needs to be prophetic or true, as long as it’s printed. I’m just wondering out loud, where you were when he was searching, unraveling, disconnecting from your faith. Wrangle your anger and resentment ’cause you’ve got to retain control of this with a calm hand and a cool head.

The humbleness of your faith is being tested. Like my mama use to say, “the best of sermons are seen, not heard.” My advice to you is, live the Bible you read, carefully chose the words that you speak and, most definitely, display what you pray. Hold off on contacting a divorce lawyer just yet. Pick up a copy of “In Faith and In Doubt: How Religious Believers and Nonbelievers Can Create Strong Marriages” by Dale McGowan and start reading what has happened with other couples. What’s great about America is the freedom to pick and follow the religion that suits your heart the best. Only heaven knows if your marriage will survive this, but what I can assure you that both of you deserve the proper respect from one another while you work on it. Everyone is going to hell in a hand basket according to someone’s religion. Trust me when I say, it’s better to sit on a mountaintop meditating on God and all of His glory, than it is to sit in church disengaged, thinking about taking a hike. Alma

ciety of Professional Journalists’ (SPJ) Hall of Fame in 2016. Mr. Payne was also inducted into the Hall of Fame for the New York City Chapter of SPJ, the Deadline Club, in 2017. Glover recently asked NABJ founders to write an essay on their reflections on the Kerner Commission Report.
