Court Alumni Graduation Ceremony at 1:00 p.m. during National Drug Court Month Successful Treatment of Addiction through Collaboration (S.T.A.C.) court graduates from 2008 – 2012 will meet the police officers that arrested them as far back as 2001 and share their successes since their arrests at the Frank Crowley Criminal Courts Building, 133 North Riverfront Blvd, 2nd floor, Dallas, Texas 75207 at 1:00pm, Friday, May 12, 2017. Then 27 participants will walk across the stage to graduate from the program. From a life of repeated felonies and failed attempts at drug or alcohol rehabilitation, Dallas County Courts’ S.T.A.C. Program seeks to transform lives and help defendants re-enter society as productive citizens, ultimately saving county taxpayers millions, and possibly saving their own lives. The 12-18 month program is about accountability and was developed to transition defendants back into the community after treatment. In addition to ongoing meetings with probation officers and court officials, defendants take intensive outpatient treatment classes, attend Narcotics and/ or Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and are tested frequently for drugs and alcohol use. They are required to maintain employment, complete probation requirements and work community service hours as well as pay back any related court fines and fees. WHAT: S.T.A.C. Both Brown and Campbell were chosen for their universal views of honoring traditions while fusing them with the current political and social climate. Additionally local Dallas area artists: Mark Crow, Tyra Goodley, Don O’Bannon, Evita Tenezo, and Paul Harris will be joined by more than a dozen artists from the Southwest. Over twenty-five artists are expected to attend this year’s show. So many lives destroyed
By Cheryl Smith
There’s something about August 2nd. Whether it’s 1985 when there was the crash of Delta Airlines flight 191 in Dallas with 137 casualties, including my Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sisters and some fellow Florida A&M University alumni; or 2014 and the brutal murders of Demarcus Walton, Tyteanna Brown and Kimberly Montgomery. I had never heard of a “trap house” until August 2, 2014 and there isn’t a day that goes by since that fateful day, that I don’t think about the violence that happened at the hands of Justin Pharez Smith (no relation). When I think of the devastation that drugs have had on society, I am saddened because just like we’re still feeling the impact of slavery centuries later, our descendants will be dealing with the effects of drug use for centuries to come. Yes, people knew Demarcus Walton as a drug dealer. But to me, he was a respectful young man who was a good father. We never had a conversation about his “business” so I can’t speak about it. I never saw him smoke a cigarette, never saw him flashing money around or doing the things you read about that are associated with the drug culture. There were no big chains, nor was his body heavily tattooed. I did, however, see him working a “legal” job and providing for his children. I remember my last conversation with him because less than 12 hours later he was brutally murdered. When I got off the phone, I told my friend Eva, “that’s a fine
young man.” The next morning I received a call that changed my life forever. My heart felt heavy. I was in pain. Demarcus befriended Justin and when Justin decided to rob and kill his “friend,” he robbed so many other people. There’s the survivor, Tarsha Reed, who is partially blind and clearly traumatized from the attack. She survived a gunshot to the head and was able to testify of Justin’s cowardice act.
Justin Pharez Smith There were plenty of teary eyes as she recalled that morning begging for her life and playing dead in hopes of living. Before Demarcus was killed, I did not support the death penalty and I did not change my position. But Justin’s heinous act changed the lives of so many on all sides. Watching Justin’s mother was difficult, just as it was watching Demarcus’ mom and the others. Then there are the children (a total of 12) who have lost their parents. This was a tough trial and District Judge Jennifer Bennett made sure her courtroom did not become a circus. I appreciated her leadership because believe me it could have gotten ugly. There were clearly those with their own ideas
WWW.MYIMESSENGER.COM
about how to punish Justin. Some felt Justin showed no remorse whatsoever because he is a psychopath. But there were also Justin’s loved ones who asked for mercy. The jury found him guilty of capital murder. No surprises there. When Justin faced the jury and admitted his crimes, he said his victims were asleep. While I sat through some of the trial, I couldn’t listen to the Victim Impact Statements. So many lives have been devastated and I wonder if some will ever rebound. There is no victory to celebrate. The Judge sentenced Justin to life in prison. He won’t be appealing his conviction and he will never be parolled. He has a child who will never get to really know him. His victim’s children will only have memories of their parents. I know quite a few people who supported Justin. One of my former students made an impassioned plea on social media, telling about the Justin he knows. I believe that my former student told the truth, just like I told the truth about Demarcus. And who wants to believe that someone they know could be so vicious as Justin is? One thing’s for sure, I want to make sure that my seven-year-old grandbaby, Aaliyah grows up knowing that her father, Demarcus, loved her dearly and that he was always there for her. I take a little solace in knowing that for a short time she had the love of a father and in this day and age, sadly there are so many who never know a father’s love. Still, my heart is so heavy.

Mother’s Day is one of the most universally celebrated holidays on the national calendar and easily number one in the Black community. Our mothers have a special place and prominence; possibly because in so many instances they stand alone in a nation that is openly hostile toward women and downright brutal to Black mothers. And while I would not ordinarily posit this space as a requiem for mothers, I could not allow this opportunity to pass without recalling the life, legacy and largesse of the recently transitioned Velma Brooks. Admittedly, I was also threatened by my beautician Tootsie, who was a student and an ardent lover of this Dallas heroine best known as Velma B. Velma B’s Beauty Academy was originally “Madame Walkers’ Beauty College”. Madame Walker, said to be the first Black female to reach millionaire status, established the first Black beauty college in Dallas in 1939. After graduating from the same in 1958, Velma B became a full time instructor. Velma B purchased the college in July 1971 and by 1975 the college was renamed Velma B’s Beauty Academy. Velma B was not only an

In 1974 she was the recipient of the Rose D’or Award in Pairs, France, and the World’s Hairstyling Champion for the United States. She was the consummate professional, and many of the best stylists in Dallas and around the coun-
standing work in the field of cosmetology including; Business Woman of the Year (1971 and 1976), Who’s Who in Black America (1977-1978), Clairol Presidential Hair Colorist Council (1983), Dedicated Service Award from Bethune Cookman College (2003), Special Entrepreneur Award –
try were under her tutelage at some point of their career. Velma B was a living, breathing example of the entrepreneurial spirit of Black Wall Street. My friends over at the Dallas Post Tribune listed some of her accomplishments, that I believe bear repetition. “Ms. Brooks won countless competitions and received over 100 awards for out-

gists Association, Texas Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association, Dallas Beautician Association.” Velma B had the uncanny ability to see a fashion trend on the horizon and retrofit her efforts to meet the beauty needs of her students and clients. Long before most knew that ”aggregating” hair was possible, she had mastered the art of hair weaving and was conducting formal and informal seminars and tutoring sessions. Legions of young stylists would share her space and leave with a new talent. This newfound talent came with a greater potential for self-dependency and professional pride. There is a quote which has been widely distributed and fitting for the life of Velma B. “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” But Velma Brooks made an addendum…If you own the lake you can control the commerce of a community. Velma B took her fish, taught others to cast their nets and eventually deeded the lake to aspiring cosmetologists in this community. Now I could not end this without shouting out to my mama, Patricia Ann Figures Price. But all of us owe a debt to the late Velma Brooks who was a mother to this community that will be sorely missed. #BlackWallStreet Vincent Hall is an author, activist and award-winning columnist.

The initiative features a series of videos and stories that are promoted in social media and on FootballMatters.org, the NFF's digital platform for promoting the good in the game. "The National Football Foundation makes a concerted effort to create opportunities for all the groups who influence the game and play a role in supporting our mission," said NFF Chairman Archie Manning. "Whether it is coaches, players, officials, administrators, or parents, the NFF works to engage all the people who support the game. Moms represent one of the most powerful influences in a young person's development, and the 'I'm A Football Mom' initiative gives them a voice in

“What Do We Have To Lose? Environmental Protections and More” FROM THE HILL
by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
In just the first 100 days of his presidency, President Donald Trump has shown ample disregard for environmental justice and protection. In a short period of time, the president made clear his agenda—anti-climate, anti-science, and anti-fact. The current Administration has already taken significant steps, in lock-step with Congressional Republicans, to roll back and erase the progress made by the Obama Administration to protect our health, our public lands, and our precious environment. Since taking office, President Trump has signed a number of executive orders reversing many of President Obama’s environmental protections—promoting cleaner air, cleaner water, and more sustainable energy production. The current White House is on a fast-track to overturn decades of progress and set our
nation back in the effort to combat climate change. The Clean Power Plan, which established comprehensive carbon emission standards and put the United States at the forefront of global environmental stewardship, was one of Trump’s first targets. Instead of investing in technological and scientific innovation to make America a leader in greener, cleaner, sustainable energy production and consumption, President Trump has used his office to support the interests of corporations and interests in big oil and dirty coal on the backs of hardworking Americans. Furthermore, the current Administration has promulgated efforts to expand environmentally detrimental offshore drilling, allow the dumping of mining waste, and potentially force an exit from the 2015 Paris Agreement which brought the world’s powers together in agreement to curb our collective carbon emissions. The proposed budget goes even further in rejecting evidenced-based policy-making. From proposals to cripple the Environmental Protection Agency and zero-out critical programs at the Department of Energy like AR-
PA-E, this Administration has abandoned our nation’s effort to protect our planet and be a global leader. The effect of this Administration’s attack on critical environmental health protections spares none, including Dallas. Despite major improvements thanks to President Obama’s Clean Power Plan, Dallas still ranks as the 13th most polluted region for harmful ozone in our air throughout Texas and Oklahoma. In fact, the Metroplex is on track to having more than 45,000 asthma attacks by 2025 – a nation-worst. As recent as 2015, Dallas was ranked the 7th most ozone polluted city in the United States. The Trump Administration’s blatant disregard toward the health, economic, and national security risks associated with global climate change is shortsighted and will only further endanger Americans’ health, security, and economic stability. While we will all suffer from the consequences of short-sighted federal policy, the heaviest burden is bound to fall on those already marginalized.
