The Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman, graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (BFA) in 2000. His writing partner is also a HU graduate. Boseman came back to his alma mater to address the Class of 2018, and to reportedly receive an honorary degree. The Howard University graduation is one of more than 100 HBCU graduations, and more than 4000 graduations around the country. April Ryan brought down the house at Bennett College on May 5. Sophia Nelson spoke at the Philander Smith (Arkansas) graduation. All over the country, families are gathering, people are celebrating, and graduations are an occasion of joy. If you are African American and graduated from the University of Florida, however, your achievement might be marred by the horrible memory of a faculty graduation marshal physically pushing you off the stage simply because you stopped to flash a frat sign or to execute a couple of steps. More than 20 students were assaulted by the unidentified faculty member (although some say he is a chemistry lecturer), who is now on paid leave. Why would the university continue to pay someone who seems to have differentially attacked Black students (apparently no white students were assaulted or pushed off the stage)? This lecturer is a menace to society and college students who should not be exposed to his racism, either on a stage or in a classroom. University of Florida President W. Kent Fuchs has apologized to the affected students and reached out to at least some of the students. The New York Times reported

A real dilemma The Last Word by Dr. Julianne Malveaux

that Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity member Oliver Telusma ’21 got a call from President Fuchs, but as of May 8, had not called him back. From where I sit, Telusma should not call President Fuchs, instead the President needs to track that student (and the others) down and visit them personally, if necessary. The University of Florida incident reminds Black students that graduation is but one of the hurdles they must clear. Every day, every single day, they face the possibility of pernicious racism, differential treatment, and the threat of law enforcement to compel compliance with the most foolish of laws and norms, spoken or unspoken. That’s why Holly Hylton, the white woman who managed a Philadelphia Starbucks, felt free to call the police on two black men after they had been seated for a scant two minutes without ordering anything. That’s why a hysterical white female bigot called the police on a Black man who was barbequing in a public park in Oakland, California, where barbequing is customary. That’s why the police were

called on three Black women (and a white man) because they failed to wave or smile when they exited an Airbnb in Rialto, California, and detained for 45 minutes even though they had proof that they had reserved the Airbnb. T h a t ’s why the police wrestled a Black woman to the ground (exposing her bare breasts) in an Alabama Waffle House after she asked for plastic cutlery, and an ignorant employee reportedly said she did not know her place. And the beat goes on and on and on. Law enforcement officers, whose mission is to “serve and protect” are frequently questioned by Black people and have now become the tools of racist white people who want Black people to “know their place.” The police are too often called to put black people in their place, to force them to comply, to reinforce the tenet of white supremacy; the notion that when we see a white person we must shuck and jive and smile. So-called law enforcement officers become servants of racist who want us in our place.

May 25, 2018

I want the graduates to know that their place is everyplace. Class of 2018, your place is in that Starbucks at the table, order or not. Your place is in that Waffle House, getting the utensils you requested. Your place is at the lake in Oakland, burning those bones on your grill. Your place is on that stage at the University of Florida. As a matter of fact, your place is everyplace! Resistance, though, now has a high price. Who wants to go to jail and end up, maybe, like Sandra Bland, whose mysterious death in Texas still has not been solved? Who wants to be handcuffed, humiliated, exposed, and maligned, just because you asked a simple question? Starbucks will close thousands of stores to the tune of millions of dollars for unconscious bias training. But who will train these biased police officers and the racists who call them because their feelings are bruised because no one waved at them? The Class of 2018 will learn, as have millions of other African Americans, that racism is alive and well. They’ve cleared a hurdle with graduation, but even as some cross the stage they are being reminded that there are many more hurdles to clear to survive in our unfortunately racist nation. Perhaps, though, the Class of 2018 will be among those to dismantle the racist hurdles. Perhaps in the process of clearing other hurdles (graduate and professional school, marriage and children, artificial intelligence and gentrification), they will also find the wherewithal to eliminate racial barriers to success.

Deadpool 2 not a superhero movie for kids

Ryan Reynolds is back in Deadpool 2, an anti-hero action/comedy that pokes fun at everything the Marvel Cinematic Universe holds sacred. Deadpool 2 looks like something you’d get if you gave a group of high school boys a movie camera and told them to create a movie. It’s filled with action, superhero fight scenes and plenty of raunchy comedy. David Leitch, a former stuntman who also directed Charlize Theron’s Atomic Blonde, is at the

helm of this way over the top farce. Reynolds as Wade Wilson aka Deadpool has now gone international. At the beginning of the movie the mutant mercenary is shown in graphic scenes where he brutally battles criminals from around the world; and yet it is somehow done in a hilarious style. In Deadpool 2, our hero protects a chunky mutant boy who seems lost trying to deal with his super powers. The young mutant boy, Russell, played by Julian Dennison, is in

desperate need of guidance. The antagonist in the film is a villain with a cybernetic arm, named Cable, who is voiced by John Brolin. In the sequel, Deadpool enlists the help of some lesser known X-Men and as a team they are hard to beat. Also, the X-Team gives Reynolds more characters to play off of and that is really when the movie is at its best. While there are no plans for another R rated Deadpool sequel, I have a

sneaking suspicion that once the numbers come rolling in we’ll most likely see a Deadpool 3. The original movie brought in $738 million worldwide and this is the kind of movie that translates well into any language. The movie, which has a run time of 103 minutes, is an adult film. This is not a superhero movie for kids! It’s a very funny escape that I think grownups will enjoy. On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale”, Deadpool 2 rates a JUMBO!

SIGN UP NOW FOR DALLAS’ MAYOR’S SUMMER READING CHALLENGE, PRESENTED BY EPSILON, AND GET THE WHOLE FAMILY READING AT LEAST 20 MINUTES EVERYDAY Read and get rewarded! In an effort to keep academic skills sharp and encourage the whole family to read every day, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings joined students and community supporters to kick off the 2018 Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge. The free 10-week program, which runs June 2-Aug. 11, encourages daily reading of books, newspapers, magazines, audiobooks and e-books. Presented by Epsilon, the Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge is a family affair open to children and adults. Participants can enjoy fantastic prizes and more than 2,500 weekly STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) activities offered throughout the summer. Registration is now underway at any of the 29 Dallas library locations or online at dallaslibrary.org/msrc. While the Challenge officially begins June 2, people may register throughout the summer. Special kickoff parties will take place at every library location on Saturday, June 2. These include astronaut training camps, Black Panther movie

parties, petting zoos, performers, Mad Science demos, magicians and more. (Check with each local library for specific details.) Young Challenge members can earn incentive prizes – including books plus coupons and passes to local attractions – for every 10 days they read at least 20 minutes. Adults will be entered into prize drawings for every 10 days of 20-minute reading they log. Reading can be reported to any Dallas Public Library or online at dallaslibrary.org/msrc. See details and rules below. Kids who read at least 50 days by Aug. 11 will be entered to win grand prizes including special experiences such as behind-the-scenes access to the penguin exhibit at the Dallas Zoo and Dallas Stars tickets with a post-game meetand-greet with the team. Mayor Rawlings stressed that year-round reading reduces summer learning loss, keeps academic skills strong, inspires curiosity, enhances comprehension and vocabulary, and helps establish a foundation for young people to become lifelong readers.

and learners. “It’s incredible to see how the Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge has grown and evolved over the decades to become among the largest in Texas,” said Mayor Rawlings. “Summers are a notorious time for learning loss for our kids, especially under-served children. But just 20 minutes of reading per day can tremendously reverse those effects while increasing literacy and a lifelong love for learning.” In true fashion, Mayor Rawlings thanked presenting sponsor Epsilon and the sponsors and community partners who generously support the Challenge. “The Mayor’s successful and fun reading program inspires thousands of kids and families to read and experience a medley of enriching experiences throughout the summer months,” said Amit Deshpande, Senior Vice President of Analytics, Epsilon. “At Epsilon, we are innovators and believe in the power of reading from early on. It truly carries and propels you through life.” This year, the Challenge is working with compa-

nies and organizations to conduct new book drives either onsite at their locations or by offering online book drives where people can easily make monetary donations. Delivering remarks at today’s kickoff were Amit Deshpande, senior vice president of analytics, Epsilon; Cheryl Brown, director of community engagement, Cigna North Texas and Oklahoma; Carol Roberts, community and partnership marketing manager, Albertson’s/Tom Thumb; Christine Anderson, director of corporate communications, Sammons Corporation; Matthew Randazzo, CEO of the Dallas Foundation; Suzanne Massey, director of community relations, SMU; Mary Wilonsky, executive director of the Friends of the Dallas Public Library; and Jo Giudice, director, Dallas Public Library. Students from Charles Rice Learning Center were on hand, along with the Dallas Cowboys’ mascot Rowdy, Dallas Stars’ mascot Victor E. Green, Dallas Mavericks’ mascots Mavs Man and Champ, and Dallas Wings’ mascot Lightning.

QUIT PLAYIN’

Guiliani dropped a bomb “Sure you get bad people in the FBI…mostly good. You got bad people in the Justice Department.” – Former Mayor of New York, By Vincent L. Hall R. Giuliani with Chris Cuomo, CNN, May 18, 2018. On May 18, 1974, India became the sixth nation to explode an atomic bomb. On May 18, 2018, Rudolph (The Red-necked) Rainman dropped another bomb. Giuliani’s atomic admission was laid at the door of the professionals he used to work with, direct and promote. If Rudy believes what he said, he should stop plundering legal parlances for the president and promulgate for the people. The “People” need Criminal Justice Reform. And we want it NOW!!! Every time I watch Paul Manafort sachet his fat, funky ass across the streets of Manhattan, sporting those cobalt blue, signature series, super 160’s material, bespoke suits; leading a caravan of three or four $20,000 a day conniving counselors at law; I get pissed. I get piping hot. Anyone who has had the privilege of seeing America’s Criminal “Injustice” System up close must be tired of witnessing the same law that burdens the poor, benefit the rich. What kind of criminal justice reforms are in play? Glad you asked. Like the late comedian Jimmy Durante would often remark; “I got a million of em!” First and foremost, watching Manafort, Michael(s) Flynn and Cohen and 13 dirty Russians traipse their normal paths while watching poor mothers who can’t afford bail for a child locked up for traffic

tickets; is gut-wrenching. The bail industry is lucrative for bondsmen and barristers, but lousy for the poor. The whole magistrate process should be retrofitted. Then there is sentencing, and sentencing regulations and a drug policy that incarcerates the users of some drugs (Crack) but provides sanctuary sites for others (Vicodin). Policing and the “broken window” places undue pressure on the impoverished. The police have a dangerous job, but not just because of the criminal element. The job of a beat cop has always included protecting property, but these days we ask cops to compensate for the brokenness of our schools, supplement our mangled

mental health initiatives and intervene whenever suspicious White women see “Niggers anywhere they shouldn’t be.” No law enforcement agency can manage those countervailing priorities. For these remarks to emanate from Giuliani, the same loudmouthed whip-cracker who sold the concept of “Stop and Frisk,” nationally and internationally, is the trifecta of winning insults. Giuliani has assailed the same legal framework

that brought him fame. In the spirit of Mother Maxine Waters, let’s be honest. The facts and indictments from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation leave little doubt that Donald Trump and most of his cohorts are guilty…of something. Enough to send 90% of us to jail! If “Donnie” lived in my mother’s house he would’ve already gotten a good ass whipping. If he were a young Mexican man from the barrios, a Black man from the hood or a White man from the trailer parks of Middle America, he would already be laboring in the laundry room at Leavenworth. Don’t believe me? There are reports that some of the suspected “animals” of the MS-13 gang are being forcibly removed from our streets because they have a tattoo that “may” mark their membership. Due process under the law is being shattered. Or what about the 150 White bikers in Waco who were indicted after being held without bail for an inordinate amount of time? The shootout at the Twin Peaks watering hole killed nine, but you can’t just lock up everybody in proximity because they wear leather biker jackets. Giuliani and Fox Noose are flitting terms like “perjury trap” and “storm troopers,” but rarely mention that the Trump gang is hanging their hats on the chance of a presidential pardon. Giuliani dropped a bomb on May 18th; not atomic like India, but nuclear. We need criminal justice reform and he needs to surrender his law license. Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and

award-winning journalist.

Geoffrey is Unemployed It has been over a month since toy lovers received the news that Toys “R” Us was closing. On March 15, 2018 consumers were surprised but not shocked that Toys “R” Us will be closing all their stores in the United States. Toys “R” Us was founded in 1948. This is not the 70th birthday celebration we would expect. We grew up with Toys “R” Us! Geoffrey the Giraffe was our friend. We loved this store but from a business perspective, the only time we thought about the beloved toy store was during Christmas season. By the way, to those baby-making people out there who drained their family and friends’ pocketbooks by way of endless baby showers, Babies “R” Us is closing as well. Expectant parents will have to seek other outlets to con their nearest and dearest for their baby “essentials.” After so many years of building up this brand what happened? Toys “R” Us has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy over the years but consumers would have never fathomed that this store would ever close. For brick and mortar, online shopping is your

Now why would a parent have a child in a toy store during Christmas time is beyond me but I knew my patience for shopping for toys during that season would be disastrous for me. Online shopping to the rescue. I asked my opinionated Generation Z their thoughts about the toy store’s closing. My “Z” crew’s response was simply, “They are too high!” Whether prices were higher than others

is debatable. What we know now is Toys “R” Us is shutting down. It was an iconic force that managed to tap into the inner child in us all. As a kid, we grew up with Geoffrey and the famous jiggle that will be forever etched in our memory. Unfortunately, while others are rushing into these stores to get those bargain deals, I think about the 33,000 employees who will be unemployed by June of this year or sooner. In my opinion, that does not feel like a “Make America Great Again” situation. Well Geoffrey the Giraffe, you have been let go of your duties. Fear not Geoffrey, the Broadway musical The Lion King is coming to Dallas this summer. Maybe you can audition for a singing part in the musical. Look at it this way, you will be able to hang out with Simba and Mufasa singing to those ungrateful parents and children who put you in this degrading situation in the first place. Just a suggestion.~Doc Shep Speaks Dr. Felicia N. Shepherd Twitter @getfinessed Facebook-facebook.com/ fnsconsulting

Good Shepherd Church, Red Shirt Project to host blood drive

CEDAR HILL, Texas – There remains a wide gap between the number of eligible blood donors in north, central and east Texas and the number of them who actually give blood. At any given time, about 37 percent of the population qualifies to give blood and less than four percent is doing so. Surgeries and other treatments requiring transfusion therapy do not take a pause because of the seasonality of summer. Six hundred to 800 hospital patients daily will receive a transfusion. Many will receive more than one unit of blood or blood products. Red Shirt Project is hosting a blood drive from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 26 at 450 E. Parkerville Road at the M.E.T.R.O. Christ's Church on the Carter BloodCare bus. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, con-

tact Shalonda Hudson at (214) 601-3298. There is no substitute for human blood. Individual qualities in a person’s blood produces a unique donation, even if the blood type is the same as another’s. A wide diversity of blood donors is also necessary to maintain a safe and sufficient blood supply that mirrors the population of potential patients in a hospital service area. If each eligible blood donor gave two or three times a year, there would seldom be a shortage of available blood or of specific blood types. Carter BloodCare prefers to see 1,000 blood donors a day to keep pace with demand. Volunteer community blood donors make these life-saving gifts possible. One pint of whole blood can help at least three individuals because the

blood is divided into the components of red cells, platelets and plasma. Other specialty treatments can be produced from the blood, as requested by physicians. Remember to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water one to two hours before giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well on the day of donation, and present a government-issued photo ID each time they give blood. Potential blood donors may volunteer beginning at age 16 with parental consent; 17-yearolds may give independently and there is no upper age limit for donating blood. For more information on donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
