MY DAY: Keep Your “Trash” in Your Car My Day By Dr. J. Ester Davis I love a beautiful day. Even better is a lovely drive on a perfectly lovely day. When and at what point is a decision made to trash our roads and highways? What planet do you live on? We grumble, gripe and complain about construction, etc. . . and as soon as it is over and smooth sailing is upon us, we trash it. Couple weeks ago I was enjoying a drive from Arlington back into Dallas after taping a very necessary show. The bluebonnets were sprayed all over the highways, the traffic was acting like it had some sense and moving at a gracious speed. It seemed as though every-

body on the highway had just washed their vehicles. Drivers were styling their new Spring sunshades. Things were going really well. And all of a ‘sudden’ the mood changed. Everybody decided to throw their ‘trash’ out of their vehicles. And in the middle of the day, these were full grown adults. Now, this is going to be one of the shortest articles I have ever written. This article is self-explanatory and this article is ‘necessary’ and directly to the point. Why are we throwing trash out of our vehicles? If it is your trash, keep it in your car and place it in your recycle/non recycle trash cans. There were approximately five vehicles within

a mile that just opened the window and let their trash fly out. I was actually adjacent to a driver, that acknowledged my presence in the next lane and then slightly ahead of me dunks a piece of trash out of that beautiful car. Being the ever consonant journalist that I am, I started a day survey. Arriving into the downtown area, the trash survey was pretty sane. Continuing on I-30 and able to pick up speed again, this ‘soap-opera-saga’ continues. Trash all over our essential highways smothering the bluebonnets. Trash ultimately ends up in our rivers and oceans. There is now what the scientists call ‘a floating island of trash’ in the Pacific Ocean. This stretch is now 600,000 square miles. I

know. . . we can do better. I simply do not understand why we will put a state-of-the-art security system in our homes for protection and a double system from front-to-back in our cars for protection. . . and then throw trash on the ground and road these two precious possessions reside on. Think about it! Keep your trash in your car. We all reside on Planet Earth. And the protection of same is up to the people who call it home. Thanks. . . to the ‘Living Legends’ Committee for the award last week. MY TRUTH

By Cheryl Smith Publisher

First a heart-felt salute to the ladies of the South Dallas Business and Professional Women’s Club, on their 55th Annual V. Alyce Foster Trailblazer Awards Luncheon. This year’s speaker was the Honorable Judge Lynn Toler. You may know her from the popular television show, Divorce Court. Believe me when I tell you she’s more than what you see on the screen! Additionally, thousands of dollars were given out in scholarships and some dynamic men and women were honored for their service in several arenas. Now I was a bit overwhelmed on Saturday, APril 28, 2018, at noon for several reasons: I had been invited to the Trailblazers Luncheon by several people and early on. To top it off, last year I was an honoree; the chapter president, Gwen Daniels, is a strong supporter personally and professionally; member and Delta soror Ella Goode Johnson has supported me since I met her my first month in Dallas more than 36 years ago; two of my sorors - Mythe Kirven and the Hon. Maxine Thornton Reese were the co-chairs of the Luncheon; one of the honorees, Barbara Record, who took care of and fed me when I was sick in 1992,

tinues to thrive. I take solace in knowing that I plan to attend the Harlem Renaissance Cabaret at the Renaissance Hotel on 2222 N, Stemmons Frwy at 7p.m. and the Black Rodeo on June 16 at Fair Park!

Then Iota Phi Lambda Sorority - Psi Chapter, was holding its annual Business Luncheon and two years ago, I was honored locally and regionally. This business sorority has such excellent programming, the sisters are so loving and supportive, and when I am around them, I feel like a better person and my life is enriched tremendously. How can you pass up that feeling? Then too, I have known immediate past Psi Chapter President Daphne Hornbuckle and her husband for some time. Jesse Hornbuckle and I date back to the time when he was a photographer for the Dallas Times Herald. Today I still consider him to be one of the best photographers I know! And I knew his mother, who was a past national president of Iota!

There was also Justice and Brunch with Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III at Ten Eleven Grill. I’ve known Freddy Haynes since I came to Dallas and he was on Bishop College’s campus. To introduce him is like introducing the leader of Wakanda -- no words are necessary. Just show his picture! I’m sure the brunch was enlightening, informative and entertaining - a definite exercise in freeing your mind!

Then there was the D/FW Florida A&M University Alumni Association Annual Terrance Hunt Scholarship Brunch featuring Dr. William Hudson, FAMU Vice President for Student Affairs. Now, if you really or remotely know me, you know I love FAMU. At this event three years ago, I was the honoree. ucational, insightful, inspiring and challenging. In many ways, I found her message to be one worthy of a larger audience, kind of like the Million Man March was for men. Black women need to be celebrated more and who better to hear accolades from than one of your sisters? As Judge Toler shared her thoughts you couldn’t help but take a self-assessment. She talked about the men and women who face her in the courtroom. The men, she said, tell her that they “do as much as I can.” Then there are the women, who tell her, “I do what ever is needed to be done.” Sound familiar?

Yep, like the judge says, “Women don’t see limits - she sees what needs to be done and gets it done!” But, like the wife, and mother of six, reiterated, women have to find time to take care of ourselves and make ourselves happy. I know it’s hard. We are always trying to make things better for those we love — always trying to fix things! But we have needs also, she pointed out. “It is important for us to fill ourselves up,” said Judge Toler. “If we don’t fill ourselves up, soon we won’t have anything to give.” Recalling when she took up ice skating, the Judge talked about

how beneficial the experience was for her. As she talked about that experience, I reflected back on the things I like to do, the things that bring me joy. Now your friends/associates/ colleagues will tell you to get rest or have fun, but many intend for you to take their advice, AFTER you have done what they need done. There’s a song, What’s left to give, after giving it all? You never want to find out! Thanks for the message Judge! NOTE: Check out my Facebook page for the Live Broadcast of Judge Toler!

Hollywood Hernandez Live

Avengers: Infinity War marks the 10th anniversary of The Marvel Comic Universe, which all began with Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man back in 2008. This new "All-Star line-up" includes almost every previous super hero from every previous Marvel Comics movie including Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Black Widow, Spiderman, The Guardians of the Galaxy, the new kid on the block-- Black Panther and even a few newer

ones. The movie is much like an NBA All-Star Game. It's big on star power but is has a little trouble with continuity. However, even with multiple sub-plots going on at one time the movie, amazingly, holds together. The movie has a subplot for every character in the film but even at 2 hours and 40 minutes long it only gets into half of the story. There will most definitely be a "Part 2." Without giving away any spoilers the main

plot line involves Thanos, a giant purple overlord who we were first introduced to in Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanos, played by the voice of Josh Brolin, travels the galaxy in search of the six "Infinity Stones", which would make him all powerful and allow him to carry out his mission of wiping out half of the inhabitants of the Universe and, in his perverted plan, maintain the survival of mankind. He is death and destruction riding roughshod on a biblical level. The only thing standing between him and his twisted plan are The Avengers. With around 30 Avengers, past and new, in this movie it makes it a bit hard to follow "who's who"

and exactly what their background story is; unless you are a serious fan of the Marvel Universe and even then you may have trouble keeping up. The CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) effects in this movie are stunning. It looks like all 10 years of innovations in the Marvel Universe were all used in this one film. But, again, it's the plot in this movie that will leave you scratching your head. While there are some exciting scenes that moved the crowd at the screening I attended (mainly in the key battle scene that brings in Black Panther and takes place in Wakanda); the ending of the movie was a huge disappointment.

NOTE: Audiences flocked to movie theaters worldwide this weekend as Disney and Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War broke the domestic opening weekend box office record and the worldwide opening record. The Marvel Comics movie opened with an amazing $250 million in the U.S. and $630 million worldwide. While The Avengers was flexing its

However, the good far outweighs the bad in this movie. It has plenty of humor with the interaction between the characters and, as you would expect, it has some great fight scenes. It should be pretty obvious that I have some real mixed emotions about this film, but still I'm eager to see how it ends when the sequel comes out 2019. You can expect a movie with plenty of fun and action if you go see Avengers: Infinity War, but be prepared to be disappointed by the end. The movie is rated PG-13 for scifi violence and crude references and on my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate it a LARGE.

muscles, the majority of films on the weekend box office chart fell dramatically, however; fellow Marvel release Black Panther had a spike in its position; rising from eighth place last weekend to a spot in this weekend's top five. Worldwide Black Panther has now grossed over $1.3 billion! Hollywood

THAT CELEBRITY INTERVIEW I’ll say it again….I have the best job on the planet! This edition of my column I spoke with Football Legend Jerome Bettis. Then rounded my week with CNN commentator Sally Kohn joining me in the studio. I say life’s just doesn’t get better. Pro-Football Hall of Famer and Super Bowl XL champ Jerome Bettis, talks with me about his impressive 13 seasons of playing professional football and his forecast for the NFL Draft taking place at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. He’s also partnered with Stryker Orthopedics to launch their series “Get on the Bus” contests to help those with chronic joint pain get the help they need. Jerome is a legend and you can get the chance to MEET him and current TOUR Champions Golfer, Fred Funk, by nominating a loved one who needs a little extra encouragement to “Get on the Bus” to a healthier life. Jerome’s team gave me background information; the former Pittsburgh Steelers Running Back is one of the best all-time running backs in the NFL. Bettis was also the recipient of the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2001, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015. 2006 Super Bowl XL champion, Bettis, is one of the National Football League’s most popular retired players, the sixth best rusher of all-time and a six-time Pro

Bowl selection. Jerome Bettis has been part of the Stryker Orthopaedics family since 2016. Although not a joint replacement recipient, Bettis is no stranger to experiencing joint pain after 13 seasons of playing professional football. The contests come on the heels of a healthy road trip that Bettis and Funk embarked on in 2017 where they participated in activities such as yoga and cycling to demonstrate firsthand how important it is to maintain an active lifestyle. This year, Stryker is taking its commitment to joint health education one step further with the launch of “Get on the Bus.” Through these three contests, Stryker is encouraging people to share why they or their loved ones need a little extra encouragement to go to the doctor to learn about joint health. The grand prize winner in each contest will win the opportunity to get on board

Stryker’s first-ever bus and spend time with Bettis, Funk, or both. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER visit patients.stryker.com. Mr. Bettis career statics were supplied by his public relations representative. Hear Jerome Bettis full interview at soundcloud.com/valderbeebeshow

QUIT PLAYIN’

That other Michelle!

By Vincent L. Hall

“Like she (Sarah Huckabee Sanders) burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smoky eye. Like, maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s lies. It’s probably lies.” - Comedian Michelle Wolf, 2018 White House Correspondents Dinner. We knew it would take a White woman named Michelle to get away with verbally assaulting Donald J. Trump and his legion of liars. Michelle Obama could never go public with how she really feels about the reprobate. But apparently “my sister from a different mister” doesn’t fit the homogenized version of womanhood worthy of casting stones at the Donald Dynasty either. Michelle Wolf, best known for her intermittent spots on “The Daily Show” was castigated roundly by the right, and cautioned lightly by the left. Everyone turned on her, but her fans thought the writing and delivery were masterfully done. “Of course, Trump isn’t

here, if you haven’t noticed. He’s not here. And I know, I know, I would drag him here myself, but it turns out the President of the United States is the one pussy you’re not allowed to grab.” This was Wolf ’s opening salvo and served to remind America of its failure to perform due diligence. America selected a low-life with five kids, three “baby mamas” and the morals of a mobster. Michelle’s monologue ratified the existence of the #MeToo movement.

not shut me up unless you have Michael Cohen wire me $130,000.” Ms. Wolf explored a theory we share, that “The Donald” is a government subsidized, wannabee-billionaire. Plenty of experts disbelieve Trump’s boastful estimates of his net worth. “Mr. President, I don’t think you’re very rich. You might be rich in Idaho but in New York you’re doing fine. Trump is the only person that still watches “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” and thinks: “Me!”

Her intro was a corollary to Trump’s very public history of indiscretions. Michelle went further into her portfolio of fearless feminism. “Now before we get too far, a little bit about me. A lot of you might not know who I am. I’m 32 years old, which is a weird age — 10 years too young to host this event, and 20 years too old for Roy Moore.” She also poked fun at Trump’s “fixer.” “I’m a woman, so you can-

My Michelle “outted” the blatant hypocrisies of self-acclaimed Jesus loving; “Large-Print” Bible-thumping; Conservative, Evangelicals. “And yeah, sure, you can groan all you want; I know a lot of you are very anti-abortion, unless it’s the one you got for your secret mistress.” Another stab at Michael Cohen’s couture collection of fixes that’s been shredded to threads. Coincidentally and not to

belabor the point, if just 3% of you Pro-Life advocates raised your hands to raise an orphan, you could get some universal respect and America would be greater than any nation in the world. IJS! Finally, the epilogue of this five-fingered offensive was hurled at the American media, who bear most of the fault for Trump and the reincarnation of “isms” that came with his rise to prideful pomposity. “Trump has helped all of you. He couldn’t sell steaks, or vodka, or water, or college, or ties, or Eric. But he has helped you. He’s helped you sell your papers, and your books and your TV. You helped create this monster and now you’re profiting off of him.” She’s right. And so this saga of renewed racism, sexism, classism, and terrorism on the poor, the immigrant and the image of decency that America has spent billions to advance; continues to rise. That other Michelle goes high, but this Michelle went low and I love them both!!! It takes a village to raze a Trump!! #QuitPlayin #StayWoke Vincent L. was lacking in pastoral skills. That is simply not true! The dismissal of Father

Conroy is a signal to liberal and moderate members of the clergy that neither their prayers nor their counsel are wanted in a Congress that is so heavily influenced by closed-minded individuals, and whose policies contravene the essence and the goodness of their faith. One member of the House, aligned with Speaker Ryan, was quoted as saying that the next House chaplain should be an individual whose lifestyle and training allowed him or her to relate to members of Congress who were married and who had children. That translates into no

Catholic priests, and is blatant bigotry. This type of thinking has been given presence and prominence by Speaker Ryan. While a member of Congress, I have served with five House Speakers, Thomas Foley, Newt Gingrich, Dennis Hastert, Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner. I have never experienced such a blatant attack on the office of the Chaplin. Speaker Ryan’s dismissal of Father Conroy because of a prayer that gave standing to the deeply-held Christian belief of fairness contradicts the shared feeling that faith and charity have a rightful place in the work of the Congress!

Former Pantherette selected in First Round of WNBA Draft Ariel Atkins hasn’t even graduated from the University of Texas yet, but she is already in Washington, D.C. where she is working out with a professional women’s basketball team. Atkins, who graduated from Duncanville High School in 2014, was picked seventh in the WNBA draft by the Washington Mystics . “It was a crazy moment,” Atkins said. “I was predicted to go lower in the first round. I was just so excited and thankful. God has really been faithful in my life.”

Atkins got the word while staying at her mom’s house in Duncanville. She said returning to the city where she played basketball as a Duncanville Pantherette always brings back fond memories. “I’m home. It’s where I grew up,” Atkins said. “I love everything about this city. No place is perfect but this is our community.” Atkins said Pantherettes Head Coach Cathy

Not a lot of coaches do that,” Atkins said. “She created a family atmosphere and always supported us even when we weren’t looking good.” After graduating from D u n c a nv i l l e High School, Atkins continued her stellar basketball career at the University of Texas where she led the Longhorns with 14.9 points per game.

With one foot still in college and the other firmly planted in the future, Atkins is already setting goals for her pro career. “I definitely want to win a championship. I want to help my team do that,” Atkins said. “I’m excited in my first year to learn and grow from everybody. I love learning about the game.” As for that diploma she earned, Atkins said she’ll be able to take a quick break from her pro career to return to Austin and walk at graduation.
