MAY 5, 2017 I Messenger ANOTHER BLACK YOUTH MURDERED BY POLICE
Min. Dominique Alexander DA Faith Johnson
From Staff Reports Another child becomes identified by a hashtag following the murder of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards who was killed by Balch Springs police officer, Roy Brooks. Police Chief Jonathan Haber, fired the officer after an internal investigation revealed that several departmental polices had been violated. It seems Jordan, his brothers and friends were leaving an endof-the-school-year party when Officer Brooks fired into the vehicle. According to a statement from the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, chaired by State Rep. Helen Giddings, (D-Dallas), members have filed legislation this session to prevent similar incidents in the future. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson spoke to the family and community-at-large, about the shooting. “I am deeply saddened to hear of the fatal shooting of Jordan Edwards,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “I offer my thoughts and prayers to the Edwards family and to the entire community, who all have suffered a painful loss. “I have spoken with Dallas County Sheriff, Lupe Valdez and Dallas County District Attorney
Rev. Michael Waters
Faith Johnson regarding this incident. Both Sheriff Valdez and Judge Johnson said they have already started to conduct separate but fair, independent and Aubrey Hooper thorough investigations in their own right. I will continue to receive details as their respective investigations unfold.” Johnson concluded, “It is also imperative that we aggressively pursue these two separate investigations to preserve the trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.” District Attorney Faith Johnson said, The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office’s Public Integrity Unit includes a specialized group of experienced attorneys and investigators. The Civil Rights Team responds to all officer involved shootings in Dallas County to conduct an impartial and independent investigation. “As such, the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the death of Jordan Edwards,” she said. “We offer our

sincere condolences to Jordan’s family and will continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers as we move forward expeditiously, with a commitment to justice andtransparency.” Next Generation Action Network leader Min. Dominque Alexander said the organization’s leadership plans to meet with local and statewide leadership, including the Dallas County District Attorney, to discuss requests on how the affected parties would like to see the case unfold and move forward. “NGAN recognizes and acknowledges the untimely death of Jordan Edwards as a loss to his family, friends, and to fellow peers and mentors of Mesquite High School,” said in a statement released earlier this week. “We also recognize that this tragedy has caused an overall loss to the strength, well-being, and prosperity of our community. With open transparency and respect to the Edwards family, we have

noted the mental and emotional trauma that will have residual effects and lasting impacts, on the lives of those involved. We have extended our services and resources to help alleviate and resolve these issues in the capacity of their preference.” Rev. Dr. Michael Waters, Senior Pastor of Joy Tabernacle and Agape Temple A.M.E. Churches said in a statement: “While the firing of the officer who shot Jordan comes as welcomed news, now is not the time to rest but the time when complete justice must be pursued aggressively. Our community needs to join together in prayer for God’s justice and guidance but also be equipped with tools and strategy to peacefully fight back against the epidemic of police brutality. We commit to holding up our responsibility to ensure that our bright young man, Jordan Edwards, will not have died in vain and this horrific tragedy will be a catalyst for change in our community and the nation.” Representative Eric Johnson has released the following statement in response to the incident: “Devastating does not adequately describe this tragedy. Johnson blasts Healthcare vote
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement after the passage of the American Health Care Act: “Today’s vote for the TrumpEddie Bernice Johnson care bill is disU.S. Rep graceful and hurtful to the American people. This Republican-led bill did not afford the American people time to hear debate while lacking transparency. “We also never received an official score from the Congressional Budget Office stating how many Americans would be negatively impacted and the amount of money it will cost the nation.” Republican representatives who voted against the AHCA
Andy Biggs - Arizona’s 5th District Mike Coffman - Colorado’s 6th District Barbara Comstock - Virginia’s 10th District Ryan Costello - Pennsylvania’s 6th District Charlie Dent - Pennsylvania’s 15th District Dan Donovan - New York’s 11’s District Brian Fitzpatrick - Pennsylvania’s 8th District Jaime Herrera Beutler - Washington’s 3rd District Will Hurd - Texas’s 23rd District Walter Jones - North Carolina’s 3rd District David Joyce - Ohio’s 14th District John Katko - New York’s 24th District Leonard Lance - New Jersey’s 7th District Frank LoBiondo - New Jersey’s 2nd District Thomas Massie - Kentucky’s 4th District Patrick Meehan - Pennsylvania’s 7th District Dave Reichert - Washington’s 8th District Ileana Ros-Lehtinen - Florida’s 27th District Chris Smith - New Jersey’s 4th District Michael Turner - Ohio’s 10th District
Congresswoman Johnson, among the group of all Democrats who voted against ACHA, continued, “What happened today has stripped away the basic fundamental right of health care for everyone. My office received numerous calls from con-
stituents in the 30th district, health care professionals and health care advocates opposing this bill. Additionally there seems to still be a divide because there were a number of my Republican colleagues who opposed this bill as well. “This bill is not perfect and it is our job as elected officials to represent the bests interests of the American people. So we should not be supporting or applauding the passage of this most recent bill when it makes coverage unaffordable to those with pre-existing conditions and imposes an age tax on seniors who are the most vulnerable.” She concluded, “Unfortunately, an opportunity was wasted to really work together to address the current issues of the Affordable Care Act, but it will be up to the Senate to take up this bill. I urge my Senate colleagues to act with humility and do their due diligence to safeguard health care affordability and coverage for everyone.”
Youth murdered, officer fired, continued from previous page riencing. As the father of a black son, I share the anxiety that many black parents feel when we hear about situations like this. “I would encourage the Balch Springs Police Department to continue to display the transparency and accountability this sensitive situation demands, including reporting the details of this terrible incident to the Texas Attorney General as state law requires.” Nathan Jones IV, The People’s Consortium National Field Director said in a statement: “The People’s Consortium expresses its support to the family of Jordan Edwards in their moment of bereavement while monitoring closely the developments in this case. As millennials committed to the tradition of Rev. Dr.
Martin L. King, Jr., we stand ready to engage in a militant nonviolent direct action campaign to ensure justice is served for Jordan Edwards.” Aubrey C. Hooper, President, Dallas NAACP, also issued a statement: “I am deeply disturbed by the initial reporting of the events surrounding the police involved shooting death of Jordan Edwards. “On behalf of the Dallas NAACP, I offer our sincerest condolences to the family of Mr. Edwards and remain in continued prayer for all of those involved and affected by his untimely death. This death of a 15-year-old honor student seems to be a tragedy that could have been avoided. “I am extremely concerned at

the policing practices that were utilized during this incident that seem excessive. From the initial accounts there was no weapon present in the car and none recovered from any of the young people involved in the police-involved shooting, in addition, there are questionable facts to the car being used as a weapon. Even in that latter scenario there are best practices in law enforcement profession that do not involve the use of deadly force.” Furthermore, Hooper continued, the officer’s decision to aim the gun toward the individual in the passenger seat brings suspicion to the officer’s claim that the car was used as a weapon since the driver was in control of the car. “While we are awaiting all facts
to be release, we trust that the Dallas County Sheriff Department will do a thorough investigation and act with full transparency as we attempt to responds to the community as it struggles with the loss of this gifted young man whose life was cut short far too soon. “We are calling for a full investigation of the Balch Springs Police Department officer(s) involved and that those involved be held accountable to the full extent of the law. We also join the community in wrapping our arms around the family of Jordan Edwards and these young men as they heal from the mental and emotional scars this incident may have caused.”

Rather than siphon Hasan’s genius and give you my remix, let me give you a few ballads that made his appearance memorable. “Now, a lot of people think Steve Bannon is the reason Donald Trump dog whistles to racists. Like most of you, Resident Donald Trump didn’t know a Minaj other than pop star Nicki until the other night. But a second generation Indian/Muslim by the name of Hasan Minhaj broke through to lyrically proclaim his own fanfare. Hasan levied a volley of syncopated beatdowns that were funny as hell. While Donald was fleecing the Pennsylvania branch of his “Duck Dynasty,” Hasan Minhaj dropped some laugh bombs on D.C at the annual White House Correspondents dinner. Concurrently a Trump rally attendee, Neil Makhija, a Harvard-educated lawyer was being roughed up. Some

Hasan delivered the coup de grace in a stunning but clever joke that wasn’t really a joke. “This event is about celebrating the First Amendment and free speech. Free speech is the foundation of an open and liberal democracy from college campuses to the White House. Only in America can a first generation Indian American Muslim kid get on this stage and make fun of the President.” Resident Trump and his ventriloquist doll Reince Priebus, flooded the Sunday news shows the next day with talk of musing strategies to make press outlets more susceptible to libel suits. Hasan’s aforementioned declaration of independence negates any such foolishness. Hasan and comedy are important because even when Americans are enjoying some well-deserved playtime that should be time spent learning about other Americans. Hasan served up a blistering list of the misgivings he has about the media, Trump and his heathens, and all of the cable news networks. But what he announced quite readily was that there is another Minhaj in town. Another unapologetic brownskinned Minhaj at that.

MAY 5, 2017
The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has recognized The Hamilton Park Community as a significant part of Texas history by awarding an Official Texas Historical Marker though the Undertold Marker Fund program. The designation honors The Hamilton Park Community as an important and educational part of local history. A dedication ceremony to commemorate the event, and officially unveil the historical marker will be Saturday May 13 at Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet at 2p.m. Speakers include Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, Dallas County Commissioner Dr. Theresa Daniel, and George Keaton Jr., Executive Director of Remembering Black Dallas. The Hamilton Park Civic League, Dallas City Councilmember Adam McGough, and the Richardson Independent School District invites the public to share in and witness this exciting historical event. “We must remember and remind future generations of the stories and the struggles that got us to where we are,” McGough said. A letter in response to DMN’s editorial
“Still, there's a difference between creating reasonable doubt among jurors and inspiring actual trust among voters..... Price has work to do to rebuild trust and convince voters that he won't cross those lines again.” Dallas Morning News Editorial – Saturday, April 29, 2017
Elder Richard Evans
Oh please...give us a break, DMN. He’s already done the work of inspiring “actual trust” among voters. As a matter of fact, he’s been doing that very thing for over 30 years now, and doing it magnificently. That’s why voters of ALL races, cultures, religions, creeds, genders and socio-economic categories in his district flock to the polls in huge numbers to vote for him....election after election. He crushes every single one of his opponents in every election monumentally, many times with voting percentages of over 70%. Just this last election we returned him to his seat on the Commissioners Court with a stunning 67% win over his well-funded opponent – an electoral MANDATE. His reelection, in spite of the formidable legal challenges he faced, was both a referendum of approval of his legacy, and a reaffirmation of our confidence in him and what he has achieved for his district and this city; and that

remarkably convincing victory was AFTER, mind you, the federal indictment against him and the public debacle of the FBI raid and arrest. We knew he was INNOCENT then, just as we know he is INNOCENT now; and no, it was not an all Black or even predominantly Black jury who acquitted him...it was a majority White jury. So race was not a factor in the jury’s decision at all. The jurors saw what the rest of us already knew, that there was never a genuine corruption case against him, it was all innuendo and conjecture; a house of cards built with poisonous lies and vile deceptions, which were meant to lynch another strong and implacable African American leader, who has been, and remains to this day,

Only instead of a tall tree and a sturdy rope they sought to utilize our often UNJUST justice system as their malicious tool of retribution for his unapologetic stand against the rampant racism, bigotry and White supremacy in Dallas. It was an outrageous misuse of federal power and an unconscionable waste of tax-payer dollars, an unspeakable travesty the likes of which we had not seen in our time; but, thanks be to God, for once in this city, JUSTICE PREVAILED.
You see, we know our Commissioner and we know him well. We trust him implicitly and are assured that he has never violated that trust. All that he has ever done has been for the good and the betterment of the people and communities he has served so nobly and so very well. And what your newspaper and many right-wing extremists fail to realize and understand – or maybe just stubbornly refuse to acknowledge – is that Commissioner Price and his stalwart and visionary leadership CHANGED for the good those communities in Dallas County he was elected over 30 years ago to represent. For more than three decades now, his unfailing commitment and dedication to liberty, economic equity, political empowerment and equal justice for all has greatly improved our lot, and made life significantly better for all of us who live, work and do business, not only in his district, but throughout the city of Dallas and Dallas County as a whole. THAT’S WHY WE ELECT HIM....REPEATEDLY. Those of us who have been in Dallas for a while and live in his district remember vividly how things were for Blacks and Latinos and poor Whites before his historic election as the very first African American County Commissioner in Dallas County. People of color and communities of color were vastly underserved and overlooked by Dallas County for generations before he was elected to the Commissioners Court. It is wholly a matter of public record and of facts that are indis-
putable (the empirical data which show how our communities were served BEFORE he was elected versus how they have been served SINCE his election) not emotions – FACTS, not sentimentality – FACTS, not race – FACTS, unbiased, unmitigated FACTS. Any perusal of the data will show you, that by any measure, there has been a huge and unmistakable improvement in his district and for his constituents since he’s held office – it is simply undeniable. And any racist idiot who wastes his or her God-given breath trying to debate or argue otherwise is simply INVINCIBLY IGNORANT. The facts speak for themselves. When you appraise comparatively the level or measurement of county goods and services for African Americans and other communities of color prior to his leadership, with the level of county goods and services during the 30 years of his tenure as Commissioner, the difference is astoundingly and phenomenally apparent. As a matter of fact, THERE IS NO COMPARISON. There were NO African Americans employed at the executive level in Dallas County governance; nor were there any significant numbers of Black business owners doing contractual business with the county (or any governmental entity for that matter) before John’s advent on the Commissioners Court. Economic blight reigned for the most part in Southern Dallas, with very little business investment, job creation or infrastructural development. Many communities in his district still had unpaved dirt roads, no bridges, outside toilets, indecent public facilities, no running water or proper sewage/waste system and scant electricity.... UNTIL JOHN WILEY PRICE WAS

MAY 5, 2017 ELECTED. There is now, and has been for some time since his first term, a marked and demonstrably evident improvement, practically in EVERY strata of life in his district, and yes, throughout all of the minority communities in Dallas County. More than any other elected official in the history of this city, it has been HIS strong, uncompromising and progressive advocacy, coupled with his bold, courageous and assertive leadership, that has changed Dallas forever, for the good of those who had been completely disregarded, historically oppressed and excluded from the halls of power and decision-making. He was, and remains, a powerful and effective voice for those who have no voice. Of course, he’d be the first to admit that he didn’t do it by himself, but that he fought alongside many other Warriors in the Struggle for Justice, Equity and Freedom for all, many of whom are no longer alive today, but who battled long and hard for Civil Rights and basic Human Rights in every area of life in this city, in order to give a bright and blazing future for our youth and coming generations. Whether it was regarding police brutality and the need for a sane deadly force policy and for a Citizens Police Review Board with subpoena powers, unfair housing practices, the unavailability of affordable housing, red-lining of banks, the violation of citizens’ voting rights, an unjust criminal justice system (which is in itself criminal), educational excellence for all children, economic development in the Southern sector, a regional public transportation system, affordable healthcare and excellent public health facilities and qualified medical staff, the need for persons of color on the TV screen and in upper management in the media and journalism outlets of North Texas, lead contamination and environmental pollution, or the global struggle against apartheid in South Africa, John was right there in the forefront of the battle; helping to blaze a pathway of empowerment for historically disenfranchised communalities and uprooting the systemic effects of institutional racism, which had been (and in many ways, remains) so deeply embedded in the matrix of the city of Dallas. It is absolutely amazing that no one ever cares or is appalled at the vast possessions and uncounted – and most times, SECRETIVE – wealth of White politicians, nor is there any scrutiny worth mentioning of where or from
whom White politicians acquire their cash, cars, investments, stocks, bonds, bank accounts, jewels, gold, minerals, oil wells, houses, property, skyscrapers, planes, jets, businesses, corporations, ships, helicopters, yachts or other resources. Nor is there any scrutiny of what they do with it, how they use it or whom they give it to. Even as I write this comment, the State Department of the United States is marketing and promoting Donald Trump’s privately owned hotel on its official government website, and his family is promoting his personal financial empire from the very White House itself, with all of the power and prestige of the presidency behind them (to say nothing of the fact that he still has not released all of his tax returns). Yet most conservatives see no conflict or contradiction in these astounding and quite obvious violations. Lobbyists and corporate big-wigs pour millions upon millions of dollars and gifts into hands and the personal pockets of White politicians at every level of government all across this country with the stated purpose of currying their favor (it is never called nor considered “bribery”), and tie multi-million dollar government contracts to consulting deals and business investments for their friends, family, supporters, constituents and home districts all the time – AND IT IS NEVER EVEN SPOKEN OF or questioned as unethical or corrupt, let alone rebuked or considered criminal. On the contrary, it is expected behavior...for a WHITE politician. It’s called “bringing home the bacon” and if you don’t play the game that way you won’t ever be reelected. But if a Black elected official tries to secure economic boons for the community he or she represents, and for the people he or she serves, all of a sudden it is considered criminal. Such is a prime example of the insidiously biased beast we all know as “White Privilege.” It is the height of disgrace and repugnance that in America, and indeed, in Dallas, Texas, African Americans and persons of color are STILL unfairly held to a very different standard, or even worse – the rules of the game are CHANGED once we enter the game. As with his White colleagues and other White elected representatives, Commissioner Price has always brought the bacon home to his constituents and to the residents of his district, it is one of the most laudable features of his leadership, and has long been the cornerstone of his electability.
A man of stalwart character and integrity, he has never neglected his duties to his sworn office, nor enriched himself at the expense of those he represents. But he does have a RIGHT to make a good living, and yes, even a comfortable one – just like his White political colleagues. And as with all other good businessmen, who are also public servants, he deserves all of the profitable returns on his wise investments and the personal resources gained from any financial or real estate venture he can afford to engage in. It is totally asinine to question him or any public official as to what they lawfully do with their money and the personal funds they have worked for and rightfully earned. As a gainfully employed adult, who works very hard every day and who is fully in control of all of his faculties, he can spend it on whatever he pleases to indulge in, whether it’s antique cars, custom suits and handmade bowties, rental property, works of art or just letting it sit as cash in his home safe. It is WITHOUT QUESTION his prerogative to live his personal life and manage his personal financial affairs as he pleases, as long as he remains compliant to the laws of the land. So yes, we trust Commissioner Price, and will continue to trust him. For, he has earned our trust and paid dearly in personal sacrifice for it. We will vote for him as long as he chooses to run for office and serve our community. And I’m certain he will be reelected by large margins every time his name is on the ballot. That’s JUST how much we trust him. Understand this one thing, DMN: we not only trust him, but we love him, we honor him, we respect him and we support him....ALWAYS. And we will continue to do so, in spite of the irrational and bitterly psychotic vitriol that is vomited out daily by his detractors and haters; who, like sick, howling, rabid dogs, frothing at the mouth, scratching themselves and rolling on the ground, only wish to turn back the hands of time, to an era when Blacks knew their place and were made to stay in it. We will never go back to those times, and we will NEVER relinquish our stanch and unadulterated support of our beloved Commissioner....”Our Man Downtown”.... The Honorable John Wiley Price. I Messenger Ryan named 2017 NABJ Journalist of the Year
April Ryan
April Ryan has been selected as the 2017 Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). The annual award recognizes a black journalist who has a distinguished body of work that has extraordinary depth, scope and significance to people of the African Diaspora. A 30-year journalism veteran, Ryan has a unique vantage point as the only black female reporter covering urban issues from the White House - a position she has held for American Urban Radio Networks (AURN) since January 1997. Her position
MAY 5, 2017
as a White House correspondent for AURN has afforded her unusual insight into the racial sensitivities, issues and political struggles of our nation's last three presidents. "April Ryan is a true trailblazer and truth seeker. She's dogged and unapologetic about her pursuit of the story," said NABJ President Sarah Glover. "In the White House press corps circle, where too few black women have been given an opportunity to report, April has excelled and persevered in spite of the many obstacles she has confronted. Her work has risen to the top." Trailblazer adequately describes Ryan, who received the 2016 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Trailblazer Award from the National Council of Negro Women, an honor she was ecstatic about receiving. She has served on the board of the prestigious White House Correspondent's Association. She is one of only three African Americans in the
association's more than 100-year history to serve on its board. She is also a member of the National Press Club. On behalf of American Urban Radio Networks' 300 affiliates, and through her "Fabric of America" news blog, Ryan delivers her readership and listeners a "unique urban and minority perspective in news." A Baltimore native and Morgan State University graduate, Ryan gives back by serving as a mentor to aspiring journalists, and helps develop up-andcoming broadcasters. As much as she loves her job, which has expanded since recently joining CNN as a
political analyst, Ryan is especially proud of what she calls her greatest life's work - her two daughters, Ryan and Grace. "It is wonderful to be honored by such an esteemed organization," said Ryan. "I am humbled and honored. So many of
these [NABJ] journalists do important work and I am so thankful they would think of me for this honor. It has been an amazing couple of months and you guys give me some wind to say 'keep going.'" Ryan has made headlines while working her beat at the White House. She had public exchanges with President Donald J. Trump over the Congressional Black Caucus and with Press Secretary Sean Spicer. Her tense exchange with Spicer helped fuel the #BlackWomenAtWork hashtag. While thankful for the honor, Ryan also took a minute to reflect on the industry and encourage black journalists to remain vigilant because "we add to the stories." "We all have a job to do and some of the stories we are doing wouldn't be told if it weren't for us," Ryan elaborated. "We all need to keep pressing because the First Amendment is under attack." Ryan is more than deserving of this award,"

Celebrating National Small Business Week
FROM THE HILL
by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
This week, the nation pays homage to small businesses and entrepreneurship with National Small Business Week (April 30th – May 6th). To mark the occasion, I would like to celebrate the important contributions small businesses make to the greater Dallas community. Entrepreneurship has always been the cornerstone of our economy and, as the key drivers of economic growth in our communities, small businesses are vital for American prosperity. Over half of Americans own or work for a small business, creating around two out of every three net new jobs in the United States. Additionally, America’s 28 million small
20
businesses account for 54% of all U.S. sales. And the statistics are no different in Dallas. America’s small businesses are as diverse as its citizens. In uptown Dallas to the southern sector cities, from the neighborhood family-owned grocery store in DeSoto to cutting-edge startups in Deep Ellum, small businesses not only drive growth, but also touch every facet of American life. And the diversity that Dallas has is represented in the people who drive and maintain these small businesses. We know the difficulty of creating and maintaining a small business here in Dallas. And we know that it requires hard work and determination—but not only that, it can require kind and helping hands. We are a community that helps each other grow and thrive, and that is especially true when it comes to business development in Dallas. I am fighting in the U.S. Congress at the federal level to stand with entrepreneurs and small business owners. For entrepre-
neurs looking to finance their venture, securing a loan or attracting equity capital can present roadblocks, a hurdle that government-guaranteed loans can help businesses overcome. By helping small companies also land government contracts, federal policy can stimulate local economic activity and spur job growth. Furthermore, the Small Business Administration maintains a range of Entrepreneurial Development (ED) programs that can help prospective entrepreneurs launch new ventures and existing firms to grow their operations. A legislation I co-sponsored recently became public law– H.R. 255, Promoting Women in Entrepreneurship Act, which promotes entrepreneurial women by granting National Science Foundation programs the authority to recruit and support women to extend their skills into the commercial world. I will continue to support legislation that promotes small business growth in our local and nation’s economy.
