MY TRUTH

By Cheryl Smith Publisher

When you have a good thing, you’d better hold on to it and treat it right. Isn’t that the recurring theme in a number of “love” songs? In preparation for the 24th annual Cheryl Smith’s Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon there were some moments of hesitancy. You see, in 1995 at the first scholarship fundraisers, comedian/activist/ humanitarian/nutritionist and all around good person Dick Gregory stood by my side encouraging people to support my efforts. Along with rap group Public Enemy’s Chuck D. and Malik Farrakhan, Mr. Gregory graciously donated his time to the cause. The cause is my truth. As a talk show host on Soul 73 KKDA, I talked to a lot of listeners. Many needed help. I didn’t have a lot of money but I thought it would be great to reach out to friends and colleagues, asking them to come out and have a good time raising money to help students go to college. Over the years so many have come out and given of themselves for the benefit of others. At the end of the first event, I told Mr. Gregory, Chuck and Malik that I didn’t want to impose by asking them to come every year, but whenever they wanted to come, I would make arrange-

ments. While he may have missed three of the 23; Mr. Gregory always made up for his absences by

stopping through town EVERY year. And when he was here he talked about the importance of giving but he never Actress Ptosha asked for a dime Storey to appear at bowl-a-thon - NOT ONCE - and neither did Chuck or Malik or the other hundreds who took time out of their busy schedules to support this cause. We have used proceeds to provide annual scholarships in the name of Dr. Betty Shabazz, to student interns in Sen. Royce West’s Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Program. We’ve also provided scholarships totaling over $30,000 to the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists (formerly Communicators) Scholarship Program, the Emmett Till Foundation, Africa Care Academy and the Urban Journalism Workshop, to name a few. The foundation also brought in speakers, including: Dr. Ivan

Van Sertima, journalist George E. Curry and Mamie Till Bradley Mobley, to share knowledge. When I came up with the celebrity bowl-a-thon I didn’t have any idea that we would one day be approaching our 25th year. I wanted a fun, family event where people could come, void of any inhibitions and expectations. We’d just chill out, enjoy fellowshipping and raise a lot of money. And if you were fortunate, you seized the opportunity to get close to Mr. Gregory and gain a few nuggets of wisdom! Believe me when I tell you. Or just read one of his books, and you’ll understand what I am talking about! And I have such a dynamic team of volunteers who continue to give of their time and resources. You see, it’s not just about what you do. It’s about what you do for others. On those Saturday nights when we are extremely tired, we think about why we are doing what we do and why we should keep going. It’s just a bowl-a-thon but so many benefit from this bowl-athon. And so many more can! Most recently I have had to repeat that thought over and over again because I can’t help thinking about Mr. Dick Gregory. I really long to see him stroll-

I Messenger ing into the bowling alley and showing me love. That won’t happen this year or ever again. But the bowl-a-thon can keep raising funds and providing scholarships. And you can help. If Mr. Gregory believed in this cause,

and me, enough to clear his schedule; well I can keep on working and giving. If Mr. Gregory saw that there are some who will never do anything for anyone but themselves so we must focus on and support those who are deserving; then

we must keep on doing like he did, until we can’t anymore. Please accept this invitation to join me on June 23, 2018 for the 24th annual Cheryl Smith’s Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon. We’re going to also pay tribute to Mr.

Gregory and you’ll have an opportunity to meet Dallas’ own Ptosha Storey. You may have seen her on Empire, If Loving You is Wrong or the recent hit, Acrimony. With the generous support of Williams Chicken, Evans Engraving, Heroes House, and others, we’re doing for self. You don’t have to know how to bowl, all ages are welcome and EVERYONE is a celebrity! Dick Gregory said, “One of the things I keep learning is the secret of being happy is doing things for other people.” So let’s celebrate life, love and the spirit of lifting as we climb! Let’s hold on together! The stupidly foul and racist comedienne Roseanne Barr is as insignificant as a single drop of rain in a thunderstorm and so, on one hand, she deserves to be upbraided, to have lost her television show, and to be written down in the halls of ignominy. At the same time her description of former White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett as the spawn of “Muslim Brotherhood & planet of the apes”, is unfortunately consistent with our nation’s history of dehumanizing and defeminizing African American women. When a people are systematically dehumanized, they can be treated as lesser, inferior beings. When people are compared to monkeys, apes, gorillas, they are being described as less evolved than other human beings, as people who deserve less. When this extends to women, we are both dehumanized and defeminized. In other words, Black women do not have to be treated with the same respect as other women. We can be violated, treated as people (things) to be toyed with. This is why so many Black women could be violated by white men who, for sport, would “go get a n---r gal”, pull her from the side of the road, and gang rape her. That’s what happened to the young mother, Recy Taylor, in 1944. The men who violated her paid no price. That’s what happened to Betty Jean Owens, the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) undergraduate who was abducted from a car (at gunpoint) and repeatedly raped by four white men. Atypically, these men were

Ain’t I a woman The Last Word by Dr. Julianne Malveaux

convicted and sentenced to life in prison. One of the men was paroled and tracked down and killed a woman named Betty Jean Robinson Houston, mistaking her for Betty Jean Owens. How could white “men” so brutally violate a woman, authorize their defense to argue that “she wanted it”, and expect to get away with it? They were granted permission by a history that made Black women seem something less than human. It’s the same history that allowed Clay County, West Virginia public official Pamela Taylor, to describe First Lady Michelle Obama as “an ape in heels”. It was the same history that allowed the same Roseanne to compare Susan Rice, national security advisor and former ambassador to the UN to “a big man with swinging ape balls” in a 2013 tweet. It was the same history that empowered a New York Post cartoonist to depict President Obama as a monkey; the same history that had a spate of elected officials refer to the President of the United States as a monkey. These folks include Mayor Patrick Rushing of Airway Heights, Washington, and Dan Johnson, a 2016 controversial state candidate in Louisville, Kentucky, and others. And when people in the United States feel free to demonize Black folks, then this

dehumanizing goes global. During the Obama presidency, there were several instances of Putin allies referring to our President as a monkey, and a North Korean defense commission described President Obama as a “monkey in a tropical habitat.” Of course, when these people are called on their nonsense, they claim they aren’t racist. Or they say they were joking. I want someone to explain what is even mildly chuckle-inducing about calling a Black woman an ape? Or explain why these monkey comparisons aren’t racist. Ambien does not count! So the decency-challenged Clay County official says she wasn’t talking about Michelle Obama’s race when she called her “an ape in heels”. She was just talking about her looks! What, pray tell, is the difference? The monkey comparisons are especially hurtful to Black women and to our girls, particularly because we are the antithesis of the so-called “feminine ideal” of svelte, blonde, and blue-eyed. Serena Williams, the far more accomplished tennis player than the Russian Maria Sharapova, has never garnered the fawning tribute to her looks, and indeed has sometimes been demeaned with animalistic comparisons. Sharapova has

just five Grand Slam titles; Serena has a near-record breaking 23. But at the time of Sharapova’s suspension from professional tennis in 2015, she had garnered more endorsement dollars than Serena. And I’ll never forget the cringe-worthy Nike “I Feel Pretty” Sharapova campaign in 2010, when Sharapova look-a-likes infested the US Open, trumpeting their “blonde beauty”. Imagine the impact such a campaign might have had on the self-esteem of Black girls if “pretty and strong” were the mantra for Serena. Perhaps it flies in the face of American history to describe a Black woman as pretty, the feminine ideal. That’s why so many feel they can liken Black women to monkeys. Where are the women of #MeToo when these attacks come at Black women? Although ABC is to be commended for kicking Roseanne to the curb so swiftly after her offensive tweets were publicized, I am disappointed that the women of #MeToo couldn’t lift their voices to object to the defeminization of Black women. The disdain that made Roseanne feel free to attempt to dehumanize Valerie Jarrett, is the same disdain that allows Black women to be so easily violated in the workplace and the world space. If white women want Black women as allies, more of them must speak up when we are disgracefully, but historically, demeaned. This is really not about Roseanne. It’s about the ways history has shaped the way many view African American women.

Ocean's 8 is the female version of the Ocean's 11-13 series that starred George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Sandra Bullock is the ring leader of this crew and after five years in prison she's devises a plan to steal a necklace with a value of $150 million dollars. To the film's credit there is no time in the movie where the female players are short changed because of their gender. These ladies are great at the con game and they give the good old boys a run for their money. Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, the long lost sister of Danny Ocean. Fresh out of prison she goes to work gathering a team to help her with her plan to steal

a priceless piece of jewelry right off the neck of a famous actress (Anne Hathaway) at a big fashion gala in New York. Her crew includes Cate Blanchett as her main partner, Mindy Kailing as the on the spot jewelry maker and a small but pivotal role by Rihanna as the computer hacker and security specialist who wisecracks her way through the movie. Ocean's 8 is a really well done "caper film" with enough interesting plot twists to keep you engaged for the entire hour and 50 minute movie. The best part of the movie is watching Bullock and Blanchett handpick their crew of criminal experts. It is a movie that is very "star driven." It also, very smartly, uses

real fashion icons and celebrities to give the high fashion gala a good dose of realism; including the Kardashians, Tommy Hilfiger, Matt Damon, Katie Holmes, and Tyga in cameo roles. Ocean's 8 is a fun ride and a welcome reprieve from all of the summer's super hero and special effects movies. The movie is light summer fare during a summer of serious films with more gun play than a graphic video game. It's also a movie that empowers women. It shows what woman can do when they all work together for a common purpose; even if that purpose is committing a crime. The movie is rated PG-13 and on my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate Ocean's 8 a LARGE.

D-FW National African American Insurance Association recognized

By Macelle Allums

The members of the Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter of the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) were recently recognized for their partnership and contributions to the Emmett J. Conrad High School Academy of Finance. Members of the organization facilitated the INVEST insurance curriculum to the students enrolled in the Academy of Business and Finance. NAAIA professionals working in many capacities of the insurance industry, presented classes weekly to the students for a 10-week period. Subject matters included Life & Health, auto, homeowners, commercial liability, and Homeowners - to name a few. Lessons were presented and the students were allowed to ask questions and tested on the info presented. Machelle Allums, the chapter’s Director of Education coordinated the project working closely with the instructor, Janel Humphries. Over 25 members of the organization served as teachers, or participated in mock interviews with the students on two different dates. The Conrad partnership is a win for the students as they have the opportunity

NAAIA members

to hear first-hand how the professionals got into the business and different occupations available in the Industry. NAAIA members were touched by the commitment of many of the students who in some instances had to overcome major obstacles to attend classes. We met several students impacted by the “Dreamer issue” or who were dealing with other significant hardships. The NAAIA members work for many different companies that are supportive of our efforts and mission to increase minority workers in the Insurance Industry. Conrad High School has done a great job of getting the community involved

with their students. This recognition was given at the 2018 Career & Technology Senior Awards Banquet Held at the Magnolia Hotel – Park Cities. The hotel participates in the intern program. Graduating Seniors from all five academies were celebrated. The event was sponsored by the National Academy Foundation (NAF), the Schools advisory board, as well as other corporate sponsors and the faculty of Conrad. The NAAIA-DFW chapter is under the leadership of Dekia Henderson. The organization has partnered with the School of Business and Management at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center for the last five years. The chapter has been in existence for 10 years. Members are involved in the community via the awarding of scholarships and volunteering at local food banks and other events and looking forward to the continued relationship next term.

POLICE have not apprehended “Pookie” the serial rapist. We know he has attacked members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and there is a $5,000 reward offered by Crime Stoppers.

HE IS A SERIAL RAPIST

He targeted members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. but this is more than about a sorority. We’re talking about a community. Come on PEOPLE! Don’t you CARE? Will it matter when it is your sister, mother, aunt or grandmother or maybe YOU?
