I Messenger from the current president, 45. Still back to the point at hand. History has shown us that moments or people in history that are deemed relevant to the masses are commemorated in a number of ways. So why shouldn’t the liberation of a people from the peculiar institution of slavery be a cause for celebration, no matter when or how it came? It doesn’t appear that those who first gained freedom found any motivation to celebrate or commemorate such a significant milestone. Or did they feel as though t h e r e wasn’t really anything to celebrate? Whatever the case, we know the significance of June 19, 1865 and for me, I choose to call attention, shed light, commemorate, write about and pay homage to those who came before me. Read! There are so many good

books on Juneteenth, like A Juneteenth Approach to Black Lives Matter, Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom by Charles A. Taylor, Juneteenth by Ralph Ellison, and Come Juneteenth by Ann Rinaldi. On slavery, read several books including: The Peculiar Institution by Kenneth M. Stampp and My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglass.

If I can do the same for others, what does It say about me if I can’t celebrate my own? These and other books will better equip you to speak intelligently about the subject. Some may want to forget slavery. It is a choice that everyone

is entitled to make and live with. It’s the ridiculing that is an issue because we don’t know what we don’t know so we disparage or mock instead of at the very least learning so our decision is an informed one. Without telling anything about the movie, Whitney, I will say that Mr. Brown, the King of R&B, as his ex-wife would proudly proclaim, will see what redemption looks like, in a sense. Sure there are some demons and plenty of SMH (shaking my head) moments, but clearly some folks/ critics should be silenced. Maybe there will be a few who will admit they were either talking about something they knew nothing about or they were talking loud and saying nothing. Unfor tunately in either case, as we move forward, one of the most prudent things we can do is to use our mouths with care by knowing what we are talking about. In the absence of knowing, it would be great to remember that silence can be golden.

Trump: The Isolationist

Usually, I call him 45. Don’t want to feed the ego of a narcissist by calling out his name. But every shred of ignominy that is associated with this era needs to be associated with this putrid 45th President of the United States. So let’s call it, the Trump era. The era of indifference to human rights, the era of obduracy around international cooperation, the era of pugilism with our allies, the era of abdication of international leadership. We are riveted by the harrowing sounds of children crying when they are torn from their parents, disgusted when we learn that even a nursing child is torn from her mother’s breast, disturbed when we hear that a child with Down’s syndrome is separated from her parent, angered when a Trump (yes, time to call his name) spokesperson mocks the Downs syndrome children with his sound “wonk, wonk”. And our collective anger pushed our non-apologetic “leader” to sign an executive order that potentially stopped the separation of children from their parents. At the same time, the international scandal minimized any moral authority our nation has in calling out others on human rights violations. The sound of wailing children makes it impossible for us to take a moral

The Last Word by Dr. Julianne Malveaux

high road against any other country with their own human rights challenges. Thus, when United States Ambassador Nikki Haley announced that the United States would resign from the UN Human Rights Council, one had to wonder if she was avoiding approbation for the inhumanity toward children at the US-Mexico border, or if she had another agenda. She said that she was resigning because the group was unfair to Israel, without acknowledging that there are extreme human rights violations toward Israel against Palestinians. Perhaps she was also removing the US from a body that could censure us for the way children are treated at our border. President Trump (yes, I’m going to call him by the name this time) has picked fights with anyone he can, isolating our country against our allies, aligning him with dictatorial opponents. He wants to be appreciated like Korean dictator Kim Jung Un, asking that people pay as much attention to him as they do to a man he once denigrated as “Little Rocket Man”.

At the same time, he picks a fight against our Canadian and Mexican allies, our continental partners, because he is flexing his muscles and making the point that he does not need friends. Thus, as New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman reported that 158 Canadians were killed, and 658 wounded, since the United States was attacked on September 11, 2001. Canadians sent their troops to fight alongside us. They didn’t have to. They did because there was a relationship, a connection. Now, Mr. Trump is ungratefully picking a fight with Canada over pennies in tariffs, just because he can. He is making an enemy, creating enmity, just because he can. His behavior at the G-7 meeting in Canada was another alienating, isolating, experience. He went late and left early, signaling disrespect, maybe even contempt for his peers. He chafed when he was called on his nonsense and declined to sign the customary closing document. Without even attempting to give others advance

7

notice, he suggested that his mentor (the kindest words I can manage) Russian leader Vladimir Putin, should be part of the G7. Trump’s advocacy and behavior place him outside the orbit of reason. He is isolating himself, and our country, with his nonsense. While the world has always been clear about our nation’s flaws, and we who live here are clear about our nation’s history of oppression, there was a time when we had some moral authority in the world. We chastised others about human rights violations, excoriated others when they strayed from the tenets of participatory democracy, bribed others to “do the right thing” with foreign aid that was connected to improvements in education and health offerings. We showed up at international conferences and meetings, chanting “women’s rights are human rights”, but now we see no attempt to embrace anybody’s rights. Donald Trump has isolated the United States from its human rights legacy and moral history. Donald Trump is an isolationist who has failed to understand the ways that our global connection has benefitted us. In isolating us, what has Trump done? And what will we do about it?

QUIT PLAYIN’

WHIP Cracking Sessions! BY VINCENT L. HALL Writers collect material and minutia. We keep articles, comments, feedback and the like. My memory and my notes are not always sufficient, so I can’t tell you who wrote this or when, but it has finally come in handy. “General George Armstrong Custer was killed on June 25, 1876, in a battle with Sitting Bull and his Indian warriors at the Little Big Horn. This has been called Custer’s Last Stand, but in many ways it was the red man’s last stand. Today the white man is making his last stand, and the battle is being waged by the Republican Party against the browning of America. Some of the tactics being employed are gerrymandering of voting districts, reducing the hours and the number of polling places that have been moved to inconvenient locations and tougher immigration laws with a southern border wall. Despite these and other tactics, America has elected its first Black president and seen a woman run for vice president and president. Is it possible that a Black woman will run for president in the near future? Will Spanish replace English as the most frequently used language? Could the Trump administration be the White man’s last stand?” The New York Times published an insightful article last week; “Fewer Births than Deaths among Whites in Majority of U.S. States.” The data made several salient points and explained some of the social paranoia that feeds Trump

and those Nativists. “The pattern first started nearly two decades ago in a handful of states with aging white populations like Pennsylvania and West Virginia. But fertility rates dropped drastically after the Great Recession and mortality rates for whites who are not of Hispanic origin have been rising, driven partly by drug overdoses. That has put demographic change on a faster track. The list of states where white deaths outnumber births now includes North Carolina and Ohio.” The study also pointed to the high number

of deaths among Whites from drug overdoses. That explains the recent billions earmarked for opioid treatment, while no mention of the 25-year old crack epidemic. The danger is not always in what Trump says; it’s what he implies that is most harmful. Caucasians throughout the world generally believe themselves superior to all darker-skinned peoples. They have invested heavily in faulty research that supports their insecurity. However, the pathology of privilege that White Americans are diseased with exceeds anything the Europeans can muster.

Trump was elected to “Make America great…Again,” like it was before minorities, women and gays were recognized as legal equals. Most Americans, and by that I mean the “Non-deplorables,” are still shocked that anyone as crass and crude as Donald Trump could ever be considered, much less elected. Don’t be fooled though, the majority of White America don’t buy the brand he’s selling. For these liberals, progressives or whatever Trump is unbearable. The puzzling question is why Trump reneged on the elite status he earned by virtue of his wealth. Why be a Trump when you could be a Kennedy or a Bush or some other family of American nobility? Why trifle with the hoi-polloi? Who sits in coach when first class is chump change? Trump understands that White America has gotten startled. A growing immigrant population is probably left-leaning and won’t acquiesce to the racism and inequality that favored some and devastated others. It takes Whites in power to keep Whites in Power. Suddenly their world has grown darker quicker than they can keep up with. The sum total of America’s superiority can be found in its nuclear capability. America can no longer conquer the world; the best we can do is a murder-suicide. Custer died a soldier. The last man standing next time will be a diplomat and their name won’t be Trump.

AFFORDABLE CARE ACT

by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

After a Republican-controlled Congress failed approximately 70 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the Trump administration has unwisely turned to the courts in an effort to dismantle the legislation that has for the past eight years provided needed healthcare coverage to millions of deserving Americans and their families. Now, the U.S. Justice Department is asking a federal court to strike at the very heart of the healthcare law,

requesting it to remove a number of provisions from the law, among them one that prevents insurance companies from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, an extremely popular part of the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act, tough not perfect, has proven to be extremely popular and effective among Americans. A poll taken in December of 2016 by the Kaiser Family Foundation concluded that more that seventy percent of the respondents who identified themselves as Democrats, and more than sixty percent of those who said that they were aligned with the Republican Party supported

the pre-existing condition prevision in the law. According to U.S. Census Bureau figures, there was nearly a nineteen percent decline in the number of uninsured Americans in 2013 and 2014. In 2016, only nine percent of Americans lacked health coverage, according to the Bureau. During a three year period, beginning in 2013, the number of people without insurance in Texas declined to five million, according to census figures. More than 11 million Texans would lose coverage if the administration is successful in repealing this needed law. Any reasonably prudent and fair individual can see af-

13

ter reviewing the data that the Affordable Care Act has been beneficial to our citizens. It is my hope that the jurists will see this attempt by the administration for what it is, short-sighted and politically based. I am hopeful that the courts will reject this latest attempt by the administration to disrupt progress in our country. The Affordable Care Act has been of tremendous benefit to people, and to our nation. It should remain a part of our nation’s fabric. Its effectiveness is without question! Congresswomen Eddie Bernice Johnson represents the 30th congressional district of Texas.

CHUCK D WEIGHS IN ON ISSUES OF THE DAY By Stacy M. Brown (NNPA Newswire Contributor)

To many hip-hop fans, historians and to his peers, Chuck D is considered one of the most influential lyricists in contemporary music. In describing the Queens, New York Cityborn artist in the biography pages of his new book, “Chuck D Presents This Day in Rap and Hip-Hop History,” the publisher notes that Chuck D helped paved the way for political, social, and culturally conscious hip-hop, both as a solo artist and as the leader of the ground-breaking group, Public Enemy. In a wide-ranging exclusive interview with NNPA Newswire, the legend, whose given name isCarlton Douglas Ridenhour, addressed issues concerning Black America, including President Donald Trump, the importance of voting, and the need for the Black Press to reach even further around the globe. “The state of Black America is always going to be a truncated state, if we don’t expand to where we are in the world,” said Chuck D, who just kicked off the wildly successful Prophets of Rage tour with Cypress Hill and Rage Against the Machine. To date, the concert tour reportedly has drawn more than 3.1 million fans in over 27 countries. “If [Black people] are going to rely on the United States of America to come around and give us answers, then we don’t understand that we’re all over the world, the majority…then we are doomed to be slaves in this country forever,” Chuck D said. “You’ve got to fight to get out of the box; to achieve in the United States of America was never going to be an easy ride for Black people, so we shouldn’t cut ourselves off from those who look like us in this 21st century.” In an era where new and upcoming hiphop stars like Migos and Cardi B. are leaders, Chuck D remains universally revered. His Public Enemy albums remain among the most critically-acclaimed works in rap music, including “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” and “Fear of a Black Planet.” Earlier this year, a writer for GQ Magazine noted that not only is he one of the greatest

and most influential MCs in rap’s history, Chuck D is also blessed with the sort of encyclopedic knowledge and staggering recall that places him among the genre’s foremost historians and custodians. “Chuck was there, and he got receipts,” the writer said. Chuck D said that Black America should have done more to embrace President Barack Obama and realize his limitations. “President Obama was a statement to the world, a gateway to the world and an introduction to understanding what’s in the world for us,” Chuck D said. Chuck D continued: “He was not there so that we could simply stay in America and get

answers, when the next guy who comes along is a dysfunctional idiot and everything gets reversed.” The hip-hop pioneer added that Obama’s presidency gave us a passport to understand where Black people are in the world. Chuck said that he thinks Black people dropped the ball by not seizing on the opportunity while he was still in the White House. “Waiting for Obama to do anything for Black people was the biggest fault in my opinion, because he was the president knowing damn well that he couldn’t make ‘the Black move,’” Chuck D said. “I think he gave it his all for eight years and we didn’t do all that we could and, even then, it might have taken 30 years to take advantage of a person like Obama in office; but we only got eight.” Still, voting is key, Chuck D said, as he applauded the NNPA-led effort to register 5 million, new African American voters this year.

“Voting is as important as washing your tail in the morning,” he said. “Pay attention to the local level and think about the bigger ramifications of not voting.” Chuck D continued: “You have to tell young people to pay attention at the local level, because when they run past that red light and they get pulled into that kangaroo court, where they want to revoke your license, that’s who you should look at when voting. The literacy of what voting is to our young people is short-sighted and we can do better.” The recent shooting deaths of rappers XXXTentacion in North Miami, Florida and Jimmy Wapo in Pittsburgh, Penn., are as troublesome as the shooting deaths of his contemporaries, Notorious B.I.G., Jam Master Jay and Tupac, Chuck D said. The mainstream media must share some of the blame, particularly in the case of XXXTentacion, Chuck D said. “This is a serious issue. It’s not trivial,” Chuck D said. “I got on the [mainstream] media for pumping this kid up like he was going to die and when he dies, it’s just another headline. What did you do to prevent this?” Chuck D continued: “When a guy is in that much danger, don’t give him coverage. The more you do that, the more of a target and a death sentence you give him.” To remain strong and relevant, the hip-hop legend said that the Black Press must get ahead of the curve and continue its global outreach efforts. “I think being able to be multimedia and create your text into spoken word, where the Black Press does its own podcasts and also visual stories where sight and sound are used is important for the Black Press,” he said. “But also, reaching beyond the border lines. The whole world has something to say and you’ve got to be eloquent in different languages, especially French and Spanish.” Chuck D continued: “The Black Press must be invested in the continents that want to be invested over here. This is what the Black Press could do; bring the world to your region.” Stacy Brown is an NNPA Newswire Contributor and co-author of “Michael Jackson: The Man Behind the Mask: An Insider’s Story of the King of Pop.” Follow Stacy on Twitter @stacybrownmedia.

My step-son Ask ALMA Dear Alma, My stepson, who I adore and have known most of his life, is getting married next summer. I love him and love the girl he is getting married to. Here is my problem. There is bad blood between his mother and me. I tried for years to get along with her and even acted as a buffer between her and my husband on many occasions. I did this to the point of causing myself anxiety because I just wanted everyone to get along so badly. About three or four years ago, after being married to my stepson’s father for almost 17 years, I snapped. I lost my temper with her; there was a very ugly scene that even took place in a courtroom in front of a judge. It was something I will never forget. I haven’t spoken to this woman since. When my stepson visits, he shares comments that she continues to make about me to this day. I don’t engage at all. I will not let him hear me bash his mother in any way. If this was any other woman, I would be out for blood, but I realize that the people who would get hurt are my stepsons, who I love so, I suppress my anger. But back to why I’m writing: How do I attend this wedding with a woman that I know does not hesitate to start fights, regardless of who is around. She will be surrounded by her very large family, and I will basically be there with a small handful of my family members. I will be outnumbered. And did I mention that I am estranged from my husband, too? That I’m not so worried about, but it still causes tension. And, Alma, where do I sit? Jackie B., South Carolina

OMG Jackie, Sounds like you’ve already lived through one Jerry Springer moment, and you don’t want to participate in another. I don’t blame you, girl; it can suck the life right out of you. Congratulations on the upcoming wedding of your stepson, and congratulations to you for loving him unconditionally. The one-on-one relationship between the two of you is special, and that’s how it should be. Step-parents are an extension of original parents. A relationship with step-children cannot be defined by the relationship you have with the original parent. Once you commit as a step-parent, you commit to that child for life. Now, back to your dilemma. I applaud you for taking the high road, which most times, as you know, is the road less traveled. The high road can be a lonely place…it’s usually not where you find the fist bumps, the I-got-your-backs or the you-go-girl road signs. Now here’s where my advice gets a little tricky — I want you to stay on that road. It’s great that your step-son is able to include you and wants you to be a part of this most special occasion. But you need to lay back. You know how there are different levels of guests at a wedding? You have the “family” guest, the “really good friends” guest and the “friends from work” guest. For that day, I’d like you to participate as a “friends from work“ guest. I say that because, from what I read in your letter, there’s a chance for Jerry Springer – Round 2 moment, and you certainly don’t want that to happen. I’m a step-mother, so I’m not asking you to do anything I wouldn’t do. I love my step-daughter, TaKisha, with all my heart. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her, so I sympathize with your situation. There was a moment in our lives when I had to take a step back. I took the high road. I took the blame and all that extra madness that comes along with it.

Yes, it broke my heart. Yes, it made me sad, but those are the yield signs along the way on the high road. Be mindful, be guideful (is that a word? LOL). What I’m trying to say is, you can control this. You know the rituals of a wedding. They’re all basically the same. I’d suggest you arrive on time, sit down with five minutes to spare. And since you asked, sit five rows behind his mother. You don’t need to get there early and stand outside with the smokers checking everything out. Take your seat, smile, and shut your mouth. Don’t chime in about anything, not the wedding colors, the bridesmaid dresses, the soloist — nothing. Remember, you’re on the high road. Once the couple exits, smile, smile, hug, hug and go get in your car. Make your way to the reception. Walk in and find your seat. I’m sure they’ve made appropriate arrangement for the reception seating. If not, since you asked, sit on the opposite end of the hall from her. You don’t have to be seen. You don’t have to be all up in the middle of the mix, and you shouldn’t. He has a mother and a father. Both, I’m assuming, will be front and center at the celebration. You’re no longer with his

father and you don’t want to throw down with his mother, so step back. Repeat it with me: “I’m taking the high road.” If she heads in your direction with some foolishness, that’s your cue to leave. Please, please don’t engage this woman, no matter what. If tensions run high and things get out of hand, take a deep breath, grit your teeth and keep it moving – down the high road! Alma
