I went to say farewell to three folks, who all happen to have the same name, Jordan, but were not related. Arthur Jordan, Jr. is the father of Arthur Jordan Muhammad. HIs celebration of life was on Monday. On Sunday I visited with his family members and heard wonderful stories about the Jordan family. Julia Jordan and Jowanda Jordan have been Prairie View A&M members of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. I remember moderating a panel and there was supposed to 6 be a time limit for speakers. I just apologized to Jowanda Jordan the audience because there was no way I was going to cut off THE Julia Jordan. A retired educator, she had so much information to share, I could listen for hours. Prairie View A&M names Ruth Simmons interim president

BY MATTHEW WATKINS

seem like an obvious fit for Simmons. U.S

credentials to be the president of any university in America."

Prairie View A&M University has lured a prominent former Ivy League president to temporarily lead the historically black university — a move that will likely surprise many in the higher education world, and even surprised the new president at first. The decision was finalized by a unanimous vote of the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents on Monday. Ruth Simmons, who became first black president of an Ivy League university when she took over Brown in 2001, will be interim president until a permanent replacement for current President George Wright can be found. Simmons presided over Brown for 11 years, and was once named by Time magazine as the best university president in the nation. The Houstonian has been retired since 2012 and said she never expected to take a job like this. In an interview, she said she did it because the university has a mission that she believes in. "Frankly, I was flabbergasted when I was approached about this — I didn't know what to think," Simmons said. The current president, George Wright, announced last week that he was stepping down to return to the faculty. During the same meeting, the A&M System board voted to name Kelly Quintanilla the sole finalist to lead Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi. Quintanilla has held the interim post since January. Prior to then, she was provost. A&M System leaders considered merging A&M-Corpus Christi with Texas A&M University - Kingsville last year, but backed down from those plans in the face of community opposition. The Prairie View vote is the more surprising move. The rural university doesn't

6

Simmons said she only agreed to the job if the system made clear that she was taking it temporarily — she won't be the permanent hire "because I am old and I'm retired." But she also said she has no plans to be a placeholder. She'll come into the job with ambition and a willingness to take on big projects, she said. "I would never take a position just to twiddle my thumbs," she said. "If I am going to be lazy, I would rather that be on my own time."

News and World Report considers Brown the 14th best university in America. Prairie View doesn't crack the top 300. Brown is a research powerhouse. Prairie View's faculty research is relatively modest. Simmons said she has received numerous inquiries about returning to higher education since she retired, and she has regularly dismissed them outright. But when A&M System Chancellor John Sharp approached her about this job, she hesitated to reject him. Then, she allowed herself to be talked into the move, she said. She said she got her undergraduate degree from a historically black college, and owes a lot to schools like Prairie View, which one of her 11 siblings and a few of her nieces attended. And she said she's intrigued by Prairie View's devotion to engineering and other science and technology disciplines. Black people are underrepresented in those fields, she said, and the university can do a lot to combat that. "If I can go into Prairie View to take care of the place during the interim, it would seem to me that it would be untoward if I did not step up to that," she said. A&M System leaders touted the hiring as a coup. "Dr. Simmons has been an important figure on the national stage for decades," Sharp said in a statement. "She has the

She added, "I am not going to be interim-like." Her plans for the school are still being formulated. Simmons attended Prairie View sporting events while growing up in Texas, but her knowledge of the modern version of the school is limited. Until recently, she mostly knew about recent "notorious occurrences" at the school — most notably the death of Sandra Bland, who was arrested near campus in 2015 after what seemed like a routine traffic stop. Bland, who was coming to Prairie View for a job, later hung herself in the Waller County Jail. Her death became a cause for activists nationwide frustrated with how black people are treated by police. "That was of national interest," she said. "There are many people from around the country familiar with the tragic Sandra Bland story." Now, Simmons said she hopes she can help others in Houston and beyond become familiar with the school for other reasons. "It really should have a stronger national reputation," she said. "It should be able to place its graduates in the best positions around the country."

Dallas Mavericks hold Summer Basketball Camps for Area Youth

Dallas Mavericks players Harrison Barnes and Devin Harris, members of the Dallas Police Athletic League (PAL) and former Dallas Police Chief David Brown visit Dallas-area youth at the Mavs Basketball Academy Summer Youth Basketball Camps.

Story and Photos By Dorothy Gentry

The Dallas Mavericks, its Mavs Basketball Academy and many of its star players are making this a summer to remember for Dallas-area youth. Star Dirk Nowitzki, point guard Devin Harris and forward Harrison Barnes are just some of the players who have spent time this summer visiting, answering questions, encouraging, uplifting, encouraging, and oh yeah, putting the basketball moves on happy girls and boys during the Mavs Basketball Academy. Mavs Basketball Academy is dedicated to helping athletes achieve basketball related goals by utilizing cutting-edge training techniques and a distinctive coaching style that stresses physical improvement, mental growth, and leadership necessary for long-term development and success. Three different basketball programs: Hoop Camp, Elite Camp and Overnight Camp, as well as the new Dance Camp led by the Dallas Mavericks Dancers, are there to provide the appropriate program for all age groups and skill levels. The camps provide kids, ages 8-18, the fundamentals of the game, meet new teammates, learn sportsmanship and have plenty of fun. The camps are coached by the Mavs coaching staff. Barnes’ camp, held at Exline Recreation Center in South Dallas, featured Retired Dallas Police Chief David Brown, a Dallas native, and the Dallas Police Athletic League. Barnes and Brown spoke with the kids after the camp on leadership in the community as a means to build the relationship between youth and law enforcement, and provide life and character-building skills for at-risk kids in the South Dallas area “It is important to talk with them about real life issues. A lot of the time they see us on the TV screen, etc. and it doesn’t seem real-life,”

Barnes said. “It’s important to get with them, let them ask questions, encourage them to be leaders and they can see we are real people just like them.” Retired Chief Brown, a Dallas native whose mother lives in the area said, “This is a place were kids have big dreams and many challenges. But to see people like Harrison come here it means so much for me to see this. “This is not just a basketball camp. This is showing people in this community that you care and it’s heartfelt,” Brown said. “I’m happy to be such a small part of Harrison’s efforts to give back.” Barnes said it is important for youth today to understand they don’t have to be famous to be leaders. “You don’t have to be a basketball player to be a leader in your community. Everyone can be a leader. Everyone has those traits. It’s just a matter of believing in yourself and having the right priorities.” Chief Brown said one message he wants kids to understand is that leaders care about each other. “People won’t follow you unless they first know that you care about them. I want to convey to them to care about their neighborhood, friends, family,” he said. Once you care, your behavior will reflect that caring,” he said. “You won’t go out and make bad decisions because you care too much about people. Leadership is all about caring and then your behavior reflects that.” Harris surprised kids at the Mavs Overnight Camp at the University of Texas at Arlington. He spent time answering questions ranging from “How did you get to play for the Mavericks?” to “Who is your favorite player?” He then spent time playing basketball with the campers and offering tips on how to bring out the best in their game. QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

The Jesuit Review published a sinful quote in March of this year and after the shock and awe finally wore off, numbness set in. Congressman Roger Marshall, a Republican from Kansas and an obstetrician by trade…went there. “Just like Jesus said, ‘the poor will always be with us,’” the Kansas representative remarked in a recent interview. “There is a group of people that just don’t want health care and aren’t going to take care of themselves.” He elaborated: “Just, like, homeless people.… I think just morally, spiritually, socially, [some people] just don’t want health care. The Medicaid population, which is [on] a free credit card, as a group, do probably the least preventive medicine.” Never has a more asinine, ignorant or ill-informed statement been posited in this health care debate. What’s worse is this paraphrase of scripture found in the synoptic gospels of the New Testament is theologically perverse and spiritually bereft. There are 70 million Americans on the Medicaid rolls. This number is made up of a cross section of our nation; 20% of all Americans, 39% of children and 64% of all citizens who reside in nursing homes. Costfree substance abuse clinics, if not court mandated, fall under Medicaid and are increasing in need.

Jesus Said What? Senator Bernie Sanders (I) Vermont doesn’t mince words or mix metaphors when he exposes the damnable motives behind the rush to “TrumpCare.” The tax benefit/cut derived from the pruning of Medicaid would put at least $7,000,000 each in the pockets of the 400 richest families in America. Congressman Marshall’s comments were egregious; in-

when it comes to the poor and my prevailing argument against “states rights” and state allocation of federal funds. Texas Governor, Greg Abbott an unlikely, but unabashed defender of “bootstrap” Conservatism is my proof. In September of 1986, Abbott was jogging on a windy day through the ritzy River Oaks neighborhood in Houston. A

ferring that poor people are solely to blame for their condition, but that state of mind is not exclusive to his state. The “Lone Star State” is Godless

large Oak limb snapped as he ran beneath it. The accident cost him the use of his spine and wreaked havoc on his kidneys. Abbott, an attorney, sued

Author and Attorney Mark Bello makes mention of Abbott’s gross hypocrisy in a 2013 “Legal Examiner.” “Mr. Abbott has been outspoken in his support for the tort reforms. He says tort reform is needed to curb “frivolous lawsuits.” What a hypocrite! For example, under Abbott’s policies, if a patient is left paralyzed from the waist down due to a doctor’s negligence, tort reform caps non-economic damages at $250,000 with no builtin increases over time, to keep up with the rising cost of living. And, let’s not forget who we are talking about. Abbott has sued the federal government 27 times; (20 since President Obama took office) at the expense of taxpayers. The cost for Texas alone is $2.58 million. Of those 27 cases, he has won five. Were these 22 losses frivolous expenditures of taxpayer money?” Greg Abbott will not accept the Obamacare Medicaid expansion in Texas causing millions to suffer preventive, physical and psychological treatment. Parkland Hospital of Dallas, one of the leading public health facilities in the world estimates that it loses more than $100,000,000 per year as a result. The poor may be with us always, but it’s only because the elected agents of the rich make sure they stay poor. The least these traitors could do is accept their 30 shekels of silver in private and keep the name of Jesus out of their public betrayals. Dear Alma,

I’ve been married for six years and I love my husband so much. We met when he was in the Navy. The last year that he was in, I got pregnant, so we agreed it would be best to move close to my family and I was very happy about that. He is a good provider and takes care of me and our daughter. Here’s the thing, my husband takes a trip with his best friend who is still in the Navy every year. It’s just the two of them, not the extended family. My sister said that is strange for two men to go on trips together. She said that I need to find out

Is that a little weird, does that mean you’re on “the down low?” Ummmm, I say, “no.” He was an individual person with friends before you married him. He joined the Navy to travel and that’s what he did. Just because he’s out of the military, doesn’t mean he no longer enjoys that passion or the lifelong friendships he’s made during that time. Before you were born Sweetie,

grandmothers use to say, “an idle mind is the devil’s workplace.” Do you know what that means? It means you’re creating stories in your mind instead of taking care of your business. That, Honey Chile, will get you in trouble. Don’t indict your husband based on your imagination. Stop listening to your sister, her idle mind is in overdrive. She’s not married to your husband, you are. You know better than anyone else what’s going on in your house. What you should be doing is defending your husband. How about that?! Use that week or so that he’s gone to try something new on your own bucket list. Grab a fork and appreciate the time enjoying your own pie of passion! Trust him, trust yourself and tell your sister to mind her business. Alma

Spiritually Speaking…

Take Another Look at the Light Coming Right at You From the beginning of my faith walk, I always found it amazing that what once were considered rather ordinary phrases, before finding God through Christ, I heard as very powerful statements after saying yes to the Lord. I mean, sermons arose out of everyday events; testimonies were released from childhood memories, while little nuances of speech even now take on a whole new meaning. I sometimes believe it is the Word becoming more manifest in our lives. For example, you’ve all heard or talked about the light at the end of the tunnel. Be it a freight train, a bus, or a truck, the intent of the phrase is you need to be careful. That light indicates for the most part trouble is headed your way. Now that phrase came up in a bible study I attended as part of someone’s testimony and you know what we determined? In the life of a practicing Christian, that Light represents what we strive for, what we hope for, what we pray for and what we have faith in. That light is God. I believe this because, as a Christian, I have a new perspective on the tunnel. You remember the tunnel. For the purpose of this column, let’s agree that life is a tunnel. We are in a passage way full of trial, tribulation, temptation and at times the most serious of negative circumstances. Of course life is not always like that, but if you live long enough, you’ll experience your fair share of hard times

Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

in life’s long dark tunnel. Let me proclaim today and shout as loudly as I can that there is Light at the end of your tunnel.

For me, that Light represents God’s promise. And so we can all be on the same page about this, let’s review God’s promise. “Remember your promise to me, your servant; it has given me hope. Even in my suffering I was comforted because your promise gave Psalm 119:49-50. me life.” For me, that Light represents God’s promise. And so we can all be on the same page about this, let’s review God’s promise. “Remember your promise to me, your servant; it has given me hope. Even in my suffering I was comforted because your promise gave me life.” Psalm 119:49-50. You see one thing I do know is that

God keeps His promises. So when your tunnel is at its darkest point, focus on God’s promise. In the Old Testament when God was pretty much upset with Israel and exercised His power to be who He is, still the promise, “Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in your youth and I will establish an everlasting covenant.” Ezekiel 16:60. Now if you look at these references and apply them to the life and death and life of Jesus Christ, the promise is clear. We make it out of the tunnel and live in the light of eternity. We do get through it. Our goal, our survival, our restoration if you will, is embodied in our faith that God keeps His promises. Then and only then can you focus and see the Light at the end of your tunnel. Now listen to me. At that point, when your faith meets your reality, that freight train coming right at you is really an invitation. Acceptance of that invitation brightens the tunnel of your world in a manner that keeps it illuminated forever. Indeed I do see the Light. I understand the promise. And even though this tunnel can be dark and damp and cold, the Way is plotted, the Truth is known and the Light of the World is here. We must remember to flip the switch of faith that makes this Light come on. May God bless and keep you always.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste and a wonderful thing to invest in! Thanks, UNCF WWW.MYIMESSENGER.COM

Dallas Arts District launches Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s “40 Years Forward” Archives Touring Exhibition The Dallas Arts District is launching Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s (DBDT) 40 Years Forward Archives Touring Exhibition on June 30, 2017 in the One Arts Plaza lobby, 1722 Routh Street, Dallas, Texas 75201. The exhibition celebrates the conclusion of the historic 40th anniversary season of the oldest continuously operating dance company in Dallas, highlighting major points of interest in its historic timeline. One Arts and Billingsley Company will host a reception from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. with a press preview and conference at noon. The exhibition is funded in part by a grant from the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs. The exhibit incorporates photographs of the earliest group of company dancers and members of the Dallas Black Dance Academy. It also highlights international tours, 1996 & 2012 performances at the Olympics and the acquisition of the historic Moorland YMCA building located in Dallas Arts District. Memorabilia from DBDT gala legendary artists such as Ray Charles and Harry Belafonte, as well as letters from Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are showcased. It includes photos of DBDT dancers with Her Majesty, The Queen Elizabeth II on stage of the Morton Meyerson Symphony Center following a performance in 1991. A collection of dance costumes dating back three decades are paired with the designers’ original concept drawings. “For 40 years, Dallas Black Dance Theatre has blazed the trail for excellence in dance, education outreach and community engagement and has served as an international ambassador for Dallas,” said Lily Weiss, Executive Director of the Dallas Arts District. “ DBDT is a cultural gem in the Dallas Arts District, and we are proud to launch this archival exhibition in the beautiful lobby of One Arts, paying tribute to the 40-year legacy, celebrating the vision of Ann Williams since 1976 and moving forward with the new artistic director, Bridget L. Moore.” Dallas Black Dance Theatre engaged an archives curator in May 2017 to design a three-month traveling exhibition that includes Dallas City Hall, The AT&T Performing Arts Center, Dallas Public Library and Pan African Connection. Other sites include

City of DeSoto and Texas Woman’s University where DBDT Founder Ann Williams is a distinguished alumnus, earning her Master of Arts Degree in Dance in 1968 and being the first African American to earn a degree in dance from this institution. Since 1976 Williams has been the artistic visionary developing DBDT from a grassroots organization to a professional dance company. For 30 of those years, DBDT Executive Director Zenetta Drew managed the administrative & operational areas of the organization. The dance company has toured five continents and 15 countries performing before more than 4 million arts patrons and 2.6 million students. DBDT’s repertoire includes works of such noted choreographers as Alvin Ailey, Talley Beatty, Christopher Huggins, Elisa Monte and Milton Myers. Dallas Black Dance Theatre has been designated as an “American Masterpiece Touring Artist” by the National Endowment for the Arts and in 2017 was named Texas Medal of Arts Awards recipient for Arts Education. “DBDT has been a shining star for Dallas for every one of their 40 years. What a bold and ambitious dream Ann Williams had in 1976,” said Lucy Billingsley, Partner, Billingsley Company. The talent, the excellence, the creativity and international success they have dedicated themselves to makes us all proud. We are just pleased to be neighbors reflecting in their glory.” The archives exhibition project mission is to connect audiences to the rich history of Dallas Black Dance Theatre and inspire a new appreciation in the arts as the dance company transitions into its 41st season with its new artistic director, Bridget L. Moore.
