“Wouldn’t take nothing for this journey” It’s been a Journey!

Dear Sojourner, It would go beyond the bounds of protocol for me to neglect the duty I have to thank the citizens of Dallas County. I feel compelled to seize this time and space to express my august and sincere appreciation for the outpouring of encouragement and support over the breadth of this six-year journey. You kept me prayed up, which left no room for me to be preyed on. The only way to describe my feelings at this point would be to borrow from the title of Maya Angelou’s first book of essays; “I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now.” That line was a lyric lifted from “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize,” a freedom song of the Civil Rights era and one of Dr. King’s favorites. But more than that, it should remind all of us that God never puts on any of us any more than we can bear. My mother, Willie Faye said it, and I believe it. My deepest and singular regret is that dozens of my friends and associates were treated as “persons of interest” during this process. There is no way that I can atone for the losses you have sustained in legal fees, loss of business or leverages on your reputation. Major corporations who had been partners in community outreach were inconvenienced and in some cases sullied. Please accept my apology. Nothing grieves me more than the “collateral damage” that accompanied this odyssey. I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now because the love you showered me with was unconditional, phenomenal and genuine. Clergy leaders in many churches installed me on their prayer lists and my name was lifted up regularly.

I have met men and women of all ages from Hamilton Park to Highland Park who have been more than gracious. The constituency that I have served for more than 30 years greeted me with a hero’s welcome at every point of meeting. I wouldn’t take nothing for this journey now because I have been reunited with students I spoke to decades ago and been privileged to meet the children of this generation. God provided strength and solace for me with every impromptu selfie and snapshot that I have been privileged to appear in. You held me up on Facebook and Twitter. But more than that, you have used this journey as a meeting place for community issues. I wouldn’t take nothing for this journey now, but what I pray is that we reconnect as a community and grow as a political power. Not power for the sake of its wielding, but for the sake of the 22% of Dallas children who live in poverty. The kind of power that is not blinded by an excess of cranes and construction, but a community whose heart and head can no longer tolerate the sight of the

homeless waking up underneath bridges, lodged in doorways or camped near highway underpasses. I wouldn’t take nothing for this journey now, but there is nothing I wouldn’t give to expand educational excellence in our public schools and uplift our educators. We must make all of our law enforcement agencies accountable and show them love simultaneously. Teachers and the Police have inherited the job of making up for all of our state legislature’s mess-ups. We have to manage their success because each is tied to the safety and health of this community. I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now. Thank you for standing by me. Thank you for praying for me, so I wouldn’t be preyed on. Thank the “Free Press” for believing in me. I wouldn’t take nothing for this journey now, and I wouldn’t take anything in exchange for the love we share in community.

Southwest Black Art Show The Southwest Black Art Show was created to present an exemplary experience for artists, collectors, educators, fine art professionals, and admirers of black art. The SWBAS is committed to the exclusive presentation of original art produced by artists of African-American and African descent. Our goal is to make the Southwest Black Art Show an annual destination point where collectors come to view and purchase quality black art. The show will be held June 24 th and 25th at the African American Museum, Dallas. This year we are pleased to announce two featured artists. James Brown is a 90 year old internationally-known artist. Mr. Brown is a talented painter, graphic artist and illustrator. Most of his work portrays the lives of people in North Africa, South

America, Africa and the Caribbean. Mr. Brown has exhibited in shows with other renowned artists such as Romare Bearden, Andy Warhol, Jacob Lawrence, Janet Fish, Elizabeth Catlett and many more. Also featured is the internationally-known artist Leroy Campbell who lives in New York. Campbell who is originally from South Carolina is known for seamlessly inter-mixing the unlikely themes of Gullah – Geechee cultures, post Renaissance vibes of Harlem and Brooklyn, and the 1980s African cultural resurgence. Both Brown and Campbell were chosen for their universal views of honoring traditions while fusing them with the current political and social climate. Additionally local Dallas area artists: Mark Crow, Tyra Goodley, Don O’Bannon, Evita Tezeno,

Albert Shaw, and Paul Harris will be joined by more than a dozen artists from the Southwest. Over twenty-five artists are expected to attend this year’s show. This show will host a series of workshops for those interested in becoming collectors, but may not know exactly what to look for when viewing a work of art. The Show will feature presentations by seasoned authors that will discuss topics focused on urban and traditional art forms. In addition, there will be hands-on activities for families and children throughout the weekend. The SWBAS was founded by artist, Frank Frazier, a group of art educators, collectors and curators from North Texas in 2010. Annual attendance is more than 2,000 visitors. Members of the Honorary Steering Committee are Fort Worth Attorney, Renee’ Higginbotham-Brooks;

Licensed African American Art Appraiser, Garbo Hearne of Little Rock, Arkansas; and SWBAS Founder Frank Frazier. For more than 35 years, the African American Museum has stood as a cultural beacon in Dallas and the Southwestern United States. Started in 1974 as a part of the Bishop College Special Collection, the Museum has operated independently since 1979 as a vision of Dr. Harry Robinson, Jr., Founder and President/CEO. Visit www.aamdallas.org to find the latest information about the Southwest Black Art Show, including the list of current artists and scheduled presentations. For additional information call Jane B. Jones at 214-565-9026, ext. 328 or via email at jabjones30@gmail.com or jjones@aamdallas.org.

I Messenger UNT-Dallas College of Law earns provisional accreditation The announcement that the University of North Texas at Dallas College of Law has earned provisional approval for accreditation from the American Bar Assoc. (ABA) is a fitting testament to the tenacity of visionary leaders who would not accept just "any OLE' law school education" for its law students and graduates, said State Senator Royce West, who Senator Royce West worked with community leaders and elected colleagues to bring Dallas its first, state-supported law school as a professional school of the University of North Texas at Dallas. "The vision that birthed the law school became a reality today and its first graduates, who were hooded just weeks ago are the beneficiaries of a law school education that was tailor made for them,” he said. "My sincere hope is that the first graduates and each successive class, will find fulfillment and success in their respective jobs and areas of law, and go out into this city, the state, and the world and find further success, whether it be at a big-time Manhattan firm, a local solo practice, government service, providing much-needed legal aid to Texans living in poverty and also those who live in the ‘justice gap,’ who do not qualify for legal aid but cannot afford legal services. . . or anything in between. “I also hope that many of the lawyers created by UNTD College of law will stay and practice in the community, helping to strengthen it through their professional work, volunteerism, and participation in local schools. According to the senator, the new graduates have the distinction of being the first ABA accredited, public law school in the city of Dallas.

JUNE 9, 2017

Senate Bill 956 passed in 2009, by West, created the first-ever publicly supported law school in Dallas. The law school is located downtown Dallas and will be permanently located in the historic, Old Municipal Building at 106 S. Harwood Street through after renovations currently underway are complete. In 1999, the senator successfully passed legislation that created the University of North Texas

at Dallas. Prior to its creation, there was no state-supported college or university in Dallas. The University of North Texas at Dallas, inclusive of the law school, had a Spring enrollment of 2,979 and summer classes have just recently begun. Distinguished attorney and Professor Cheryl Wattley said a lot of hard work, under the leadership of Dean Royal Furgeson, went into bringing the school to this point. “Thanks for all of the support, well wishes, and prayers,” she said. “We’re on to being different and making a difference!” The students, some who worked fulltime while going to school, had the benefit of some of the most respected lawyers in the country right at their fingertips, thanks to the UNT Team. The students also worked on legislation with State. Rep. Helen Giddings. "This is a great day in the history of the law school and the University of North Texas at Dallas and will serve as a reminder of what can be accomplished when like people, with like minds come together for the realization of a common cause," concluded Senator West.

The People’s Champ!

QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

“The People’s Champ must be everything the People Can’t Be” “Blessings” by Chancelor Johnathan Bennett, aka “Chance the Rapper. Literary geniuses and writing instructors, whom are hardly ever the same, say that an editorialist should refrain from using I, my or me. Well this missive might reside in the editorial space, but this here is a testimony. So let me get this praise party started off right. My favorite rapper in the whole widest world right now is Chance the Rapper. And I love him because he epitomizes the growing merger between the gospel music ethos and street corner rap; a conscious collision of “The Word” and “Spoken Word.” You can literally go to church in a bunch of his tracks and in one case he took Kirk Franklin with him. Once I become your fan I have to learn as much about you as I possibly can. I want to kick the proverbial tires and drive the car around the block a couple of times. So my quest and my questions

began. Why could I not find CTR’s music on iTunes? Well, CTR will not be enslaved, he owns himself and he excoriates the record labels that confine his compatriots and won’t allow them to collaborate with him without conditions. Where did he get that deaf ass ear for music? He attended Chicago’s Jones College Prep School a public arts school akin to Dallas’ Booker T. Washington High for the Performing Arts. CTR donated a mil and is spearheading a multi-million dollar campaign to fund arts and literature throughout the Chicago Public School System Why does Chance wear a hat with the number 3 on it…What dat mean? According to CTR it has three meanings: 1) The release of his 3rd mix tape 2) his three prong family; his daughter, his daughter’s mother, and his self and 3) the Holy Trinity. He might not be the champ yet, but I am about to buy that $35 hat on his website for two reasons. First and foremost, Black folks and urbanites has got to quit rob-

hard earned money “held in lieu” with no assurances that he can ever have it returned. Even when he cooperated, they brought this man before the judge in shackles. This has been the most expensive demeaning of personhood I have ever seen. John Wiley Price is the “People’s Champ” and the last vestige of the nearly dead but not forgotten civil rights movement. He is to civil rights in Dallas, what Muhammad Ali is to boxing, or Venus and Serena are to tennis. Dear Alma, I would like to know how to comfort a close friend who has a cheating spouse. My friend, who has been faithful, has distanced herself from the relationship because of the cheating, but doesn’t want to rip the family apart due to her spouse’s infidelity. I would like to know how to comfort my faithful friend, although she knows the relationship includes another woman. Signed, A Loyal Friend Dear Loyal Friend, What a great friend you are, and here’s how to be an even better one: Just listen and keep it to yourself. Evidently, that’s what you’ve been doing since your friend is comfortable enough to confide in you thus far. Cause we don’t and won’t to just anybody, I’m just sayin, you two

Business is business must have history. It’s hard to pull back the veil and reveal your heartbreak, your embarrassment or your dirty laundry. It’s one thing to put it in the dryer, but when you’re left with your business hanging on the clothesline, good googoolly moogoolly, you just want to run and hide. I know you’ve asked how to comfort her, but unfortunately no matter how hard you try, that won’t happen. She doesn’t need a comforter; she needs a confidant. To comfort means to “ease” to “relieve, cheer” and unless you’re the cheating, philandering, good for nothing…oh, wait I’m sorry, I digress. Unless you’re the spouse, that isn’t your position or place to fill. I know you mean well, but you, an outsider, can’t heal this kinda hurt for her. It is totally and wholeheartedly between her and her husband. What works for or against one couple may not for another. It’s wrong, there’s no doubt about it and a legitimate reason for divorce. But that’s not always the answer one or both participants in the relationship are seeking.

JUNE 9, 2017 ish. It’s an internal war you cannot win. I hope she’s able to fuel her soul during this most difficult time. A trusted friend provides an advantage against the enemy, and that’s exactly what you are. Without comment or judgement towards her, remain a shoulder soldier, strong and upright, ready for your friend to lean on.

Alma

When you’re on the receiving end of infidelity, you feel depleted, worthless and downright not “good” enough. Your confidence takes a leave of absence and you just can’t find it anywhere. Deciding to deal with the deceit and pretending it doesn’t bother you is fool-

SOUND THE ALARM: Breaking the silence together By Rev. Yvette Blair - Lavallais IN HER WORDS Part 2 When God created humanity, God did so with the intentions for us to be in community with one another. Being together in community is how we are able to accomplish God’s agenda. It’s how we are able to do good works. And it’s also how we are able to help one another when something happens – something so gut-wrenching that it renders us voiceless and silent because often times, the shock of the situation is so overwhelming that we aren’t sure who to tell and how to tell it. Choosing how and when to sound the alarm can be challenging. I know. It happened to me when I was the repeated victim of “unwanted touch” by a male member at the church where I served as an associate pastor. After reporting it to the senior pastor, to my District Superintendent, and to my senior pastor once more, and then another more, I was so overwhelmed by the trauma of it that I was not sure who else I could trust with this information. Then I knew that I had to share the impact of my situation because I needed to begin the healing process. I also knew that there was the possibility that someone else in my same ministry setting could be suffering in silence as well – potentially even a minor, at the hands of this same male member. So, I broke the silence and shared it in a staff meeting. It was there in the staff meeting that I learned that this same man had uninvitingly approached a young woman who had joined the choir. He showed up at the rehearsal, sat beside her, took her hand and placed it on his genitals. I can only imagine the suffering that this woman encountered. I never had the opportunity to talk with her, but at some point, she

either broke her silence or her situation was made known because others at choir rehearsal witnessed it. In my situation, the senior pastor witnessed one of the times that it happened to me. Much to my chagrin, some of the staffers were not at all surprised by my encounter with this male member. In fact, before I even said his name, someone said, “you must be talking about…something must have happened to trigger this. He was doing so well.” He had a history, and they knew his history. Now my present situation was being added to that history. It turns out that by breaking the silence of my situation, I exposed an unfortunate situation that had been going on in this church for some time, long before I arrived last July. This male member, who had a history of doing this to women, and who had been assigned “handlers and shepherds,” as the senior pastor announced, was still allowed to be a part of the worshiping community, and for all intents and purposes, be allowed to continue in this damaging behavior. I had to break my silence about my situation because I didn’t want the situation to break me. I also knew that when the senior pastor announced that this man needed to remain a part of the worshiping community so that the church could respond to him, it was clear to me that breaking the silence about my situation didn’t ensure that this man’s behavior would stop. Because he was not being stopped. He had done it before. And now he was doing it again. To me. And the fact that it was even a topic of discussion in our staff meeting was evident that breaking the silence was not enough to make it stop. It was already known and still happening. And that’s alarming. Alarming enough that I had to request to be removed from that setting. I had endured enough over four months. As I sounded the alarm and began to talk with clergy colleagues who had served in that same setting before, they, too, knew who I was talking about without me ever uttering the name of the male member. They shared their own encounters about this ongoing situation. The way I understood it, the perpetuation was commonplace and allowed.

My narrative is my own, yet in sharing my story, I learned that my situation was not an isolated one. It turns out that other clergy women (not connected to this church), had their own stories. I was dismayed to learn that they, too, had experienced either sexual harassment or sexual assault in their church settings. And the more alarming part is that when they reported it, nothing was done. The response they received was “well, this is just what happens.” It’s time to break the silence on all of that. It’s time to hold people, systems and our churches accountable for whatever part they play in allowing the perpetuation of sexual harassment. Whether it is a woman being harassed or a man being harassed, it’s wrong. Whether it’s an attack on their sexual orientation, or gender identification, it’s wrong. We can no longer continue with “business as usual” in any setting and take a “do nothing” approach when improper behaviors are witnessed, reported, shared in staff meetings, etc. This goes for schools, churches, companies, non-profits, anywhere that has people present. That pretty much sums it up. So, for anyone who has been intruded upon, this is your invitation to break the silence. For anyone who is in a position of authority and you know it’s happening, and have turned a blind eye to it, stop perpetuating it. Use your position of authority to make it stop. There are friends, co-workers, and even family members in our midst, who are unsure if they can break their silence of sexual harassment. As you are reading this, please be intentional about reaching out to those around you to assure that person that they do not have to go through their situation alone. Be especially intentional about listening to the children and youth in your midst. It is their voices who are usually overwhelmingly silent because they are afraid to speak their pain. The time is now to sound the alarm and break the silence together. Especially in the church. If we don’t sound the alarm, then we will continue to see far too many people who are hurt in the church, and who equate that church hurt with God-hurt. God does not condone this. And neither should we.

JUNE 9, 2017 I Messenger Finding Ways to Combat Youth Crime in our Community

FROM THE HILL

by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

On Saturday, May 27, 2017, our community suffered a great loss due to the passing of recent Carter High School graduate, Ledajrick Cox or “LD”, as he was affectionately referred to by his many friends. LD was an accomplished athlete with a bright future. Except his life was cut short when he was shot and killed by two male teenagers for protecting a female friend in front of an Irving convenience store. It is extremely disheartening that our city has once again lost a promising young man due to another senseless act of violence. Tragedies such as these remind us of the importance of nurturing our youth and providing them with constructive outlets. Multiple studies have been conducted in order to explore the relationship between gun violence and poverty. The U.S. stands out among other countries, as the inequality that persists in our nation is indicative of the violence that is rampant in select communities across the country. Countries that are most equal have the lowest rate of gun related violence. And there is a strong relationship between gun related violence and income inequality, evidenced by the gun issues that are seen in our nation. While we are taking steps to ensure safety in our community, we must also work to decrease the income inequality in our communities as well. Summer break is a time that many youth look forward to as it afford them the freedom of no school, free time, and warmer weather. However, there is a consequence to

20

having such copious amounts of free time. Each year after schools release their students for summer break, there is a predictable increase in youth-related crimes. This spike can often be

Ledajrick Cox

attributed to a lack of constructive outlets for our youth, through summer activities, programs, or otherwise. That is why I have become a firm believer in devoting the necessary resources to provide our youth with dedicated programs to keep them engaged throughout each summer. Last month, I hosted my annual Youth Crime Prevention Summit, where I encouraged the youth of Dallas to utilize the summer break to cultivate leadership skills, make informed decisions, and surround themselves with positive mentors and peers. Those who tend to participate in constructive activities tend to have less time on their hands which could lead to a situation where they find themselves in a situation that they will later regret or in a moment that can lead them down the wrong path. As members of the 30th District who live in the same community, we should heed to the old adage “it takes a village” and provide recommenda-

tions to our family and friends who are parents, so that their teenage sons and daughters can continue to make safe decisions and remain actively involved this summer. The city of Dallas provides a variety of activities for young children and teenagers alike. The City offers an array of summer camps throughout the city, and every parent is guaranteed to find one in their price range. The range of camps in Dallas is sure to please each child: the promising engineer, budding performer, or dedicated athlete. Venues such as Klyde Warren Park also provide an assortment of things to do for all ages. Recreation centers and churches in Dallas are also a great resource for summer activities. The Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center offers summer camps and exercise classes, while churches throughout the community will offer tutoring services, summer activities, and weeklong Vacation Bible Schools. By committing to being productive and active, we can ensure the safety of all Dallas citizens. The summer months are full of opportunity and potential for growth, but it is up to each individual to seize the moment and lead through example. Every morning, one must wake up committed to making the right decisions and to lead constructive lives. Each child, teenager, and adult must continue to surround themselves with positive role models, and equip themselves with the tools to make sound decisions, while channeling positive energy to do good for our community. By taking these steps, I am confident that Dallas will see a decrease in youth related violence and together we can all take positive steps to improve the communities we live in.
