worked his way up from a position as a security guard for a Michigan hospital, to a Wayne County sheriff’s deputy, and ultimately a Dallas Police Department Officer. DPD Sgt. Michael Smith - Smith worked in the Dallas Police Department for over twenty five years. During his time in the department, he gained a reputation for doing thorough and dependable work. He was recognized multiple times throughout his career, most notably winning the distinguished honor of being called the “Cops’ Cop.” The only thing that outweighed his work ethic at the department was his easygoing and affable manner. Prior to joining the Dallas Police Department, Smith served seven years as an Army Ranger, where he developed a strong sense of service and an unparalleled dedication to helping others. On Sundays, he acted as a uniformed guard at the Watermark Church in Farmers Branch. There, he charmed children every Sunday by showing them his squad car or telling them dry but easy jokes. People at the church were both protected and entertained by Smith. DART Officer Brent Thompson - He was the first DART police officer to be killed in the line of duty since DART first formed a police department in 1989. Officer Thompson was hailed as a “great officer” and one who had served the DART Police Department admirably since joining in 2009. Some knew Officer Thompson as the veteran officer who bravely charged at the shooter in an attempt to stop him during his rampage. Others knew him as a

former Marine who helped train and mentor local police in Afghanistan and Iraq. DPD Officer Patricio “Patrick” Zamarripa - Before joining the Dallas Police Department in 2011, Officer Zamarripa served three tours in Iraq as active duty for the U.S. Navy and then an additional 5 years of military service in the reserves. He was the recipient of numerous awards for his years of service, including the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. Our response going forward, not just in Dallas but across our nation, will be more important now than ever before. Over the past year, I convened a Task Force on Citizen Review of Police charged with identifying the underlying issues throughout our community and to lay out proactive measures that we can take to remedy such problems. The task force was compromised of citizen groups, community activists, advocates, and local law enforcement. It is crucial that we address any concerns and educate both law enforcement and members in the community on how to better engage with one another. One way to do so is by bringing interest groups to the same table for an open and honest dialogue. And, it is with the help of the Assist the Officer Foundation, Dallas Fallen Officer Foundation, and so many other groups and organizations that we have been able to move the conversation forward to help prevent future acts of violence.

Film offers wisdom on how to ‘fireproof’ marriages By Donald Lee

The movie “Fireproof,” starring Kirk Cameron, opens with the scene that shows Cameron’s character, Fire Capt. Caleb Holt, reprimanding a subordinate after they return from fighting a fire. “Eric, he’s got a right to be upset with you,” the captain says immediately after another fireman rebukes that subordinate, Eric Harmon (Jason McLeod). “You left him in a dangerous spot and tried to be a hero.” “But Captain,” Eric responds, “I thought I heard someone calling for help.” “It was coming from outside the building,” the captain interjects. “But it was so dark, I mean I couldn’t see anything,” Eric tries to explain. “That’s why you stay with your partner,” the captain says. “He had no choice but to assume that something happened to you and you needed his help. You never leave your partner — especially in a fire. “You give him some time and then give him an apology,” he says. “And make it sincere.” “Yes, Sir,” Eric responds. Capt. Holt pats Eric on the back and then walks off. While the captain approaches his job of putting out literal fires with great passion and wisdom, the film is about how he lacks that same zeal and is ignorant when it comes to extinguishing the metaphoric fires that threaten

4

his marriage. This movie is an accurate depiction of so many real-life marriages. Husbands and wives, in many marital relationships, put their hearts and souls into their careers or rendering aid to others while failing to protect their own “partners” in marriage.

For reasons such as this, it is important that couples, in general, seek counseling, and Christian couples, particularly, get that counseling from their pastor. It would also be a great idea to get the movie “Fireproof”. It offers sound advice on the how-to part of fireproofing your marriage. One of the things that counseling does for a marriage, especially one that is on the brink of a divorce, is help either side of an argument look at issues from the perspective of the other. When it’s just the spouses dealing with each other one

on one, it can be easy for legitimate concerns to be challenged. But when a counselor is involved, those same concerns get the necessary attention they deserve.

In acknowledging that there are spouses who may not feel comfortable in a formal counseling setting with a “pastor” or professional counselor, there’s an option that can be just as effective. That being one in which there’s a third party involved, a friend that both the husband and wife have immense, mutual respect for — one who is big on integrity and is spiritually mature enough to not take sides. Such a person would “counsel” the couple. But if that doesn’t work as a first-resort, then the formal counseling is highly recommended — very necessary. A word to anybody who puts anything other than God ahead of his, or her, spouse: Your first “ministry” is sup-

posed to be “home.” Ministry is service. It is wrong to walk passed your hurting spouse — being totally oblivious or indifferent to their pain — while going to provide the best “service” you can to strangers on the job or anywhere else. Put another way, such an act is called hypocrisy. If you’re single and in a relationship in which the ultimate goal is marriage, let the wisdom shared here be something that you adhere to. I’d be remiss to recommend “Fireproof” as a great movie to watch as a resource of having a fireproofed marriage while not also recommending that you get a copy of my book, “Married to Commitment,” in which a prayer partner and I co-authored to share wise counsel on having healthy relationships. If you’re married, take the necessary steps to fireproof your relationship. And be married to your commitment. Donald Lee, a freelance copy editor and columnist, is founder-pastor of Kingdom Living Christian Center in Dallas and co-author of the highly successful book on relationships, “Married to Commitment.” The book, “Married to Commitment,” can be ordered by calling the Xulon Press Christian publishing company toll-free at (866) 909-2665 or by visiting http://www.xulonpress.com. Key duties include collaborating with President Frederick on strategic planning and ensuring that all initiatives align with Howard’s core values and established priorities. In 2016, the university announced the termination of a three-year employee salary reduction program, thanks in part to gains made in fundraising and increased enrollment. “The chance for service leadership at the nation’s flagship historically black

Officials say she will begin her term at Howard on October 2.

Fiction in Black and White QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

“It’s OK. I’m right here with you.” - A four-year-old daughter’s attempt to comfort her mother after witnessing Philando Castile’s shooting death.

Dr. Brenda Wall

When Alison V., my middle child was around eight, we had a brief encounter of the significant kind; we met a psychologist, Dr. Brenda Wall. This wasn’t a paid visit, it was a chance encounter at Soul 73 KKDA AM radio. It gave me the chance to ask her what she thought of my daughter. Dr. Wall is gifted, but the spirit of discernment is the most obvious. Dr. Wall is renowned in this community. She is the type of professional and practitioner, who if given three days with Donald Trump, could get him on the path to the healing that he so desperately needs. She told me that night that Alison would

do great things, and possibly become a doctor. So when I pilfered an advanced copy of Wall’s new book; “Black Lives, White Supremacy and the American Fiction”, my plan was to peruse every page. And in just the manner I knew she would, Brenda Wall approached this very scholarly work in her strength. Dr. Wall performed an autopsy of our national police/community unrest from her perspective as the mother of a Black man and a serious student of Black Revolutionary thought. As a concerned mother, Dr. Wall set out to explain her dismay since Michael Brown was gunned down in Missouri. She takes the reader on a journey from Ferguson to Philando, and from Philando to the five officers who lost their lives tragically in the streets of Downtown Dallas. But in order to console the bulk of her patients, Dr. Wall instinctively tapered this quilt of American hostility with an understanding of the rise of Donald Trump. “Trump can be understood as a metaphor for the contemporary American fiction. The Trump metaphor represents arrogance, aggression, fear,

hate and the reckless power of white supremacy, which has always worked toward preserving racial structural inequity. And there is always the component of economic impetus: greed.” This literary work also posits a timeline that feeds into the larger narrative. “Hands up, Don’t Shoot” emerged

from the November 24, 2014 execution of Mike Brown. By December 3, 2014, “I can’t breathe” became the rhetorical retort of the Black Lives Matter Movement as the tape rolled and we literally watched Eric Garner’s murder. Choked to death over the sale of loose cigarettes, a practice that is conducted illegally in stores and bodegas in poor neighborhoods across this nation. News of the 47th anniversary of the assassination of

Dr. Martin Luther King was arrested by the circulatory breaking news chyron that announced the police killing of Walter Scott. A week and a day later, Freddie Gray succumbed to the hands of the Baltimore P.D. African-Americans, progressive Whites, the Brown community which sees its share of police misconduct and other sympathizers mobilized in cities all over Maya Angelou’s “Yet to be United States.” “Black Lives, White Supremacy and the American Fiction” places you safely on the couch of Brenda Wall. Her intellectual pedigree as developed by her work at Vassar College, Boston University, George Washington University and as a Fulbright Scholar in Turkey are evident, but not stuffy or overpowering. I bought the book because I am an avid fan and a true believer. She won my confidence years ago when she looked deeply into the psyche of my eight-year-old and gave me parenting tips. Dr. Wall’s premonition provided a reference for this book. She cited my daughter, Dr. Alison V. Hall as a resource. Dr. Wall is right here with us. Read her.

I Messenger A Christian with a Short Memory

Ask Alma:

Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and Twitter @almaaskalma.

Dear Alma, I have a friend who is the ultimate Christian. Since she’s been “saved,” she has been more judgmental of others, as if she doesn’t have a past. Back in the day, she was the one who experimented with drugs, clubs, partying, etc. Now she looks down on others who may be going through the same thing. At times, I hate talking with her. How can I make her see that what she’s doing is no different than what those she is complaining about are doing? A friend Dear Friend, Your question is an interesting one, not because it’s the first time I’ve heard of this happening, but

it’s the first time I’ve addressed this topic. My advice column is open and accepting. I can relate to and will discuss anything — love, hate, sex, work, family, you name it. Religion, however, is one subject that I try to shy away from. My father was a minister for almost 40 years, so I see this question as somewhat of a test. LOL. I’ve prayed and pondered my response, taking into consideration that believers and nonbelievers both read my weekly column. I found myself gravitating to a book my friend Nia loaned me, a book titled Grace Happens Here by Max Lucado. His book details how God’s grace is not purchased or earned by faith acts or good works. Believing in God doesn’t require that we live our lives without making mistakes or wrong decisions. It doesn’t mean we never think, speak or react negatively or inappropriately. Believing in God means that one has accepted Him as savior, our many faults notwithstanding. It means accepting His “grace.” Grace is one of God’s greatest offers and ideas. When we are demonstrating the worst of ourselves, God — with our permission — begins to turn us around. In this transformation, some folks find it necessary to point out every flaw, negative

behavior or bad habit in others. I often wonder why, as humans, we find it easier to correct others than to make corrections within ourselves. But that’s another story for another time. There’s nothing you can say to your friend right now. She has recently been saved, and so are you, so “save” your “oh-no-you-didn’t” comments for another time. Fold and put them away in your “help-me-Lord” drawer. In these early stages of salvation, since your friend is listening only to God, I’d suggest you pray to Him. Pray that God will help her consume the peace and grace that she will read about in her Bible. The scriptures that say we should be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God forgives us. Be the example and offer her the grace that you seek. I have read and believe that we will never be asked to offer anyone more than what God has already poured deep down inside of us. Here’s a reminder of something much easier preached, then lived: When in doubt, discouraged, overwhelmed or simply pissed off, seek first not to offend or correct –but – to be a blessing. Alma

DCCCD students will be Fit2Hire after free clothing event Some people are fit to be tied, but not Dallas County Community College District students! They are Fit2Hire – or they will be, after a special event on Sat., July 22, where they can choose new or gently-worn clothing they need for job interviews or to spruce up their workplace wardrobes. The event, which is free to DCCCD students from every college who have a valid student ID, will be held at the district’s Bill J. Priest Institute, 1402 S. Corinth St. in Dallas, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students must sign in and provide their student ID number; they can bring a guest, but only students will be able to shop for clothes and accessories. “The Dallas County Community College District, DCCCD’s staff and our district’s Professional Support Staff Executive Council want our students to be able to dress for success when they interview for a job or need to enhance their wardrobes for the office – especially if they have limited resources,” said Brenda Welcome, president of the DCCCD

12

PSS Executive Council. “Employees from every college and location across our district were asked to donate new or gently-worn clothing, shoes and accessories to help students, and the response over the past two months has been overwhelming. This is a pilot event for DCCCD, but we hope to host it annually.” The call for help went out in early spring, asking for donations that would give employees’ “spring cleaning a whole new meaning.” The event also includes free seminars for anyone who would like to participate. Sessions include: “How to Interview Like a Boss”; “Practice to Perfection”; “This Is Why I’m HOT (Hire me Over Them!)”; “Need a Job? Create a Plan”; “Dress for Success for Women”; “Dress for Success for Men”; “You’ve Got the Job: Now What?”; “Splunk: Understanding the Job Interview Process”; and “Classic Man.” Students will receive a gift bag when they register with a specific number of F2H “bucks” to purchase items in the boutique (the cost is one F2H buck per item). They will receive extra

bucks for attending sessions and completing an evaluation form. The “bucks” concept originated with the Blazer Store at North Lake College, which opened more than a decade ago to help students with their everyday needs. A “Fun Photo Booth” will be on site during FiT2HiRE so that students can take pictures and share the day with friends and family members. Other DCCCD colleges that have or plan to open clothing closets will be able to choose from items after students finish their shopping at 1 p.m. Any items that remain will be donated to the Salvation Army. “Fit2Hire benefits students, our colleges, employees, and the community,” added Welcome. “Approximately 100 volunteers from across DCCCD and DFW are pitching in to help before, during and after the event because we all want to help our students dress for success in order to start their new careers.” For more information, contact Welcome at 214-378-1710 or at bwelcome@dcccd.edu.

Region’s First ‘Human Rights Youth Summit’ STUDENTS, EDUCATORS & ACTIVISTS TO GATHER AT SMU JULY 15 Three hundred students, educators and community-outreach leaders will gather at SMU on Saturday, July 15, for the first “Human Rights Youth Summit” set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Martha Proctor Mack Ballroom of Umphrey Lee Center, 3300 Dyer St. “High schoolers shouldn’t have to wait until college to begin learning about human rights, and teachers shouldn’t be afraid to discuss issues young people care about,” says Rick Halperin, director of SMU’s Embrey Human Rights Program, co-sponsoring the free event with the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth. High school students are encouraged to

sign up for the “Human Rights Youth Summit” (which will include lunch) via https:// www.eventbrite.com/e/2017-humanrights-youth-summit-tickets-34043612361 while seating is available. Registration for community educators and leaders is now closed. The summit will offer a variety of workshops to help a diverse group of young people and educators better incorporate human rights-related subject matter into their classes and student networks – while also connecting them with leaders from community-outreach organizations. Recent high school graduate Lamisa Mustafa, instrumental in developing the summit, joins SMU this fall as a human rights and international studies major. As president of Newman Smith High School’s Human Rights Forum, Lamisa helped dozens of students regularly explore complex humanitarian and social justice issues ranging from the Syrian refugee crisis to gender inequality.

Martha Rivera Chavis, the devoted wife of civil rights leader and National Newspaper Publishers Association President and CEO Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., died Thursday in her Montclair, N.J., home. She was 53. “As first lady of the NNPA and as the former first lady of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People from 1993 to 1994, Martha Rivera Chavis was a loving mother and strong advocate for freedom, justice and equality in the United States, Africa and in the Dominican Republic,” Chavis said in a statement. Chavis and his wife met in June 1989 after the civil rights activist had spent time in Angola, where American-backed rebels mined civilian areas. DISD Athletic Hall of Fame Dallas Independent School District officials are excited to announce the district’s first-ever Athletic Hall of Fame created to recognize and honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the district’s storied high school athletic programs. Nominations for the Dallas ISD Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2018 open today. All nominations must be received by Sept. 30. Individuals may be nominated in one of three categories: Past Dallas ISD Student Athlete; Former Dallas ISD Coach; and Contributors. “We are very excited about the opportunity we have to recognize and pay tribute to our past sports figures and their accomplishments,” Dallas ISD Athletics Director Gil Garza said. “Dallas ISD has a rich history of success in athletics and we are proud to begin this tradition. These women and men have made a

20

significant impact not only in their designated athletic arena, but in their communities.” The Dallas ISD Athletic Hall of Fame will acknowledge those who have raised the level of public awareness and appreciation for high school athletics through their distinguished achievement and excellence, both on and off the field of competition. These individuals may include former student-athletes, coaches, administrators, contest officials, media personnel, sports medicine personnel, athletic trainers, or distinguished volunteers. Nominees may be active or retired from their fields and must exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and moral character. To learn more and submit a nomination for the Dallas ISD Athletic Hall of Fame, go to dallasisd.org/athletichalloffame.

Dallas Wings guard Allisha Gray was named the WNBA Rookie of the Month for games played in June. Gray earned the honor for the second month in a row. “I am definitely happy. It is an honor,” Gray said after scoring a career-high 20 pts in a recent home game against the Atlanta Dream. “I wouldn’t’ be able to get this award without my teammates because they are the ones that get me the ball “I just say thanks to my teammates. They allowed me to get this award. It’s a good feeling to have, Gray continued. “They have faith in me and believe in me and let me play.” Wings Head Coach Fred Williams said he was not surprised at the honor. “When I drafted her I told everybody she was pro-ready. And she is really showing that as a rookie right now,” he said. “What you see is what you get with her. She’s going to go and play hard and make big shots. She is not afraid to do that especially toward the end of the game. “Allisha is the type of player who has a lot of energy. She is just a smart balanced player who is able to grab rebounds, putbacks, and

make all types of play,” Williams said. Gray was the fourth overall pick in the WNBA Draft 2017 presented by State Farm. She led all rookies in scoring (11.4 ppg), rebounding (4.6 rpg), steals (1.27 spg) and minutes played (28.4 mpg) for the month of June. She also ranked second among first-year players in assists (2.1 apg) and blocked shots (0.64 bpg). Her scoring and rebounding averages were both among the top 20 overall in the Western Conference, and she tied for eighth in the West in steals. “I feel good. My body feels good. I still have room for improvement,” she said. “Just trying to maintain what I am doing to help the team in any way possible.” Gray helped the Wings close the month of June with four consecutive victories. She scored in double figures in eight of her 11 games, including 12-point performances in each of her final two games of June as Dallas defeated the San Antonio Stars 81-69 on June 23 and beat the Connecticut Sun 9682 on June 25. Other highlights of Gray’s month included: •June 16 vs. New York: In a career-high 36 minutes, scored 16 points and tied a career high with nine rebounds in a 102-93 overtime loss to the Liberty. •June 18 @ Washington: Contributed 12 points, four rebounds, two steals and two blocks in an 87-83 win over the Mystics. For the season, Gray is averaging rookie highs of 12.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.29 steals and 0.71 blocks. The 2017 WNBA regular season runs through Sept. 3.
