MY TRUTH

I had a heart-to-heart with a millennial recently. He did something wrong and after a conversation that went way too long, I had heard more than enough excuses/explanations, but never an acceptance or apology. It was a behavior I had become used to from so many millennials. The great thing is that millennials are some of the sharpest individuals walking the earth, but those who don’t do their homework, don’t respect anyone but themselves, are so defensive and refuse to listen — well they can give you a pain, in the you know what! Many millennials don’t listen until they are in deep trouble and then there are some times those millennials won’t listen even then. This was one of those times. Not that I wanted him to bow down or be a punk. Instead I just wanted him to be accountable for his actions and inactions. But noooo! Wasn’t happening. So I asked him if he had ever seen the movie “Head of State” with Bernie Mac and Chris Rock. I told him to check out a scene where Mr. Mac is talking to his brother (Rock) and a reporter interrupts with a question. Mr. Mac turns and gives her a piece of his mind, concluding with, “That’s why nobody likes your ass!” That’s the same feeling that some have about millennials. Which brings me to my truth. I have learned that sometimes

That’s why nobody likes... you have to shut up and listen. At a young age, I was taught that young people are to be seen and not heard and should come when called. I was also taught to respect adults. What is it about millennials? Why are they so different? On Time.com, millennials are referred to as the “me, me, me”

generation that considers themselves to be equals; able to do and say anything to anybody! And one year, some of my interns explained to me why there was such love for presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders. They said the senator was speaking their language, “it’s all about them!” According to the Center for Disease Control, millennials are increasingly choosing to delay or avoid having children. Some studies say it’s a financial decision but I have heard from their own mouths that some want to

do things that having children would delay or make impossible. Author and psychologist, Dr. Jean Twenge said, “The biggest difference that we found was in work-life balance or in leisure values – that Gen X and especially the millennials were much more likely to say they wanted a job with more vacation – that was more flexible. They thought that work was going to be a less central part of their lives.” Millennials are correct when they say that they were created by their critics. After all, we were the ones, (NOT I), who said “give a trophy for participation,” “don’t have them choose teams because the last one picked will be hurt,” etc. And we were the ones who didn’t tap those behinds when there were tantrums in grocery stores or malls. Nor do we intervene when little Johnny is climbing all over the furniture when you are visiting a friend’s house; or worse, when the child hits, spits or kicks at an adult and neither the person assaulted nor the parent discipline the bad behavior. Now when I got to high school, I really got a few lessons about consequences and repercussions: 1. Watch what you call people - Walking home from school with my bestest friend, Patrice, three big-time upperclassmen approached us from the opposite direction and they didn’t yield or

I Messenger attempt to share the sidewalk. Instead, they brushed us out of the way. I yelled out, “bitch!” I don’t recall what happened next but the next day after school, the upperclassmen were waiting outside of my algebra class, intent upon showing me what bitches do! On that very day, I learned that there’s nothing wrong with apologizing when you are wrong. Were they wrong for their behavior? Yes. Could I hold them accountable? Not really. So I apologized and avoided a fisticuff. I also learned that in my neighborhood “bitch” was a fighting word, so if you feel like calling someone a bitch, know that’s like throwing the first punch. To this day, I don’t use the word. True there have been times when folks have pushed me almost to the edge, but as I grew older I matured and thought of other reasons why I should not use the word, even around friends who used the word as a term of endearment. 2. A lesson in talking loud and saying nothing. In and around my neighborhood, there were so many members of the Nation of Islam. The brothers would stop you and engage you in a conversation. It was like sparring with words because they would hit you with a flurry of topics and then engage you in a spirited conversation that had you defending your positions. It was like being on a street debate team because there were constant challenges that helped me to speak strongly about what I knew about and to shut up when I was clueless. 3. You don’t have to experience everything.

Millennials have told me I am wrong, that experience is the best teacher. When I was a senior in high school, a young man from Newark (they were always coming to East Orange because they said we had pretty girls) tried to talk to me. He was trying to get me to do what a lot of my classmates were doing, having sex. I kept saying “no” and he kept telling me why it would be a good thing. Well guess what, his conversation took me back to my conversations with the Nation of Islam brothers. And when he told me that “experience is the best teacher,” I told him that it was not necessary for me to learn everything by experiencing it; that I could learn from others’ experience. For example, I saw the impact of drugs without experiencing it. I didn’t need to be beaten by my boyfriend to know that I didn’t want to be in an abusive relationship. In short, if I saw my brother getting a whipping for staying out late, I made it a point to learn from his experience! Teen pregnancy, talk of burning private parts, and more were enough for me!

4. Stay out of grown folks business. It starts with how you address people. I can’t recount the number of times someone young enough to be my child or grandchild has tried to address me as “Cheryl.” Really? And some find this practice acceptable, while I take serious exception to the casualness with which millennials have no problem addressing folks, at first introduction, by their first names. At my age, there are still people who I refer to with some type of courtesy title. We should hold our elders in high regard, even if their behavior is questionable and ultimately, you will be judged by your actions. Haven’t we picked up enough bad practices from colonizers? Unfortunately some, not all millennials would have taken a different message from the above lessons. And that’s okay. I just know that this world will be a better place it we all listened more, criticized less, accepted responsibility, and were more accepting of differences.

Chavis says Trump’s tariffs are bad By Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. President and CEO, NNPA Amid the rush to comprehend the ramifications of a fullscale international trade war initiated by the errant and backward tariff policies of the Trump Administration, there are results of the tariffs that need to be challenged by Black America. The financial sustainability of the Black Press of America is now facing a catastrophic and a possibly deadly impact, because of these new tariffs. The current dispute over the rising costs of the paper product termed “newsprint,” because of tariffs on Canadian newsprint threatens the future of member publishers of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and could further isolate and disenfranchise African American businesses and communities in cities and towns across the United States. Import duties the U.S. Commerce Department is now applying to Canadian-made newsprint is already increasing costs enough to prompt layoffs and scaled-back news coverage by some of the nation’s major dailies and weekly publications. If these tariffs remain in place, scores of newspapers with smaller circulations, notably those that serve African American communities, could be forced to cease publishing a print edition or close altogether. During the past 191 years,

the Black Press has survived, endured and overcome past firebombing and improvised explosive attacks, as well as other deadly manifestations of racial violence. The newsprint tariffs appear to have been put in place by the Trump Administration after being encouraged by the interests of a single paper mill in Washington State called NORPAC. NORPAC argues that Canadian government policies give Canadian paper producers an unfair advantage in the U.S. market. NORPAC says the added duties, or tariffs, at the border are protecting it. NORPAC can fight for its self-interest but the U.S. government has an obligation to consider the impact the tariffs are having on the nation as a whole, and in particular the impact on African American owned newspapers and businesses. We forthrightly oppose the Trump tariffs on newsprint and demand an end to the disastrous trade policies that are hurting our businesses and communities. Given that newsprint and labor account for most of the cost of running a newspaper, it is easy to see how jacking up the price of newsprint by more than 30 percent could spell the difference between these publications eking out a modest profit or going out of business. Around 2,000 newspapers have closed or morphed into something else

in the last 15 years. The NNPA is proud that its 215 member-publications are moving forward even in the face of these new contrived dangers and obstacles in the marketplace. Our newspapers enliven and inform the debate within African American and other communities that we serve and help to empower with news, information, and the reaffirmation of the vitality of Black cultural genius and excellence in all fields of endeavor. Our printed editions are especially important in communities where people are less likely to be able to afford or take full advantage of broadband Internet access. However useful today’s technological innovations are in sharing information, for many people, there is no substitute or affordable alternative to the local weekly newspaper of, by, and for the African-American community. Our newspapers are the lifeblood for our communities. The tariffs threaten more than local newspapers. Newsprint is used for promotional materials by retailers and civic groups. It is used by book publishers and printers. Often these are small businesses serving local communities. If newsprint goes up in price, printers will get fewer contracts and have fewer customers. Ironically, the tariffs NORPAC wants in place will actually

threaten paper producers and a range of related business. A coalition of these businesses, the STOPP Alliance, estimates some 650,000 jobs could be at risk—all to help one company that has no allies or supporters within the U.S. paper industry. The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) is reviewing the facts in this case and is expected to announce its recommendations on what to do with the tariffs later the summer. In the meantime, members of Congress from both parties have introduced legislation to suspend the tariffs immediately. The STOPP Alliance has also created an online petition to urge the ITC to end the tariffs. Consider adding your voice to this effort by clicking on this link. After all, the threat the duties on newsprint pose to daily and weekly print publications serving communities in urban and rural areas is especially acute. If there was ever a time when the country needed a range of authentic and “trusted” outlets to share news and perspectives, it is today. In today’s world, the newspapers that serve African American communities will continue to play a crucial role. Errant trade policies and duties championed by a single company must not be allowed to diminish the meaningful role of the Black Press of America.

LDF has litigated racial discrimination issues at the Supreme Court since 1940, and Justice Kennedy’s replacement could transform that institution in a way that we have never seen before, jeopardizing the progress we have achieved over the last 78 years. afford to approach this nomination as business as usual. The President leads a severely divided country, is facing multiple legal challenges, and is under multiple federal investigations any one of which could become the subject of an appeal before this very Court. In addition, there are critical elections in November that should be considered before any justice is confirmed to the Supreme Court. We need a justice who has advocated for civil rights, not against them. The stakes of confirming a qualified justice could not be higher. So

much is on the line, including voting rights, fair housing, affirmative action, the right to choose, and access to healthcare. And our most highly valued democratic principles, such as equal justice and opportunity, are on the line. Tell your senators: Push Pause on the Supreme Court Nomination Indeed, Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination has the potential to influence the outcome of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing investigation of potential criminal activity by members of the President’s campaign. The President has asserted novel claims of constitutional law, such as the

idea that he can pardon himself, if needed. Nominating a justice to the Supreme Court under these conditions is tantamount to nominating his own jury. LDF will continue to review Kavanaugh’s record, but we are deeply troubled by what we’ve seen already. ROLAND MARTIN PLEADING OUR CASE Kudos to Roland Martin, the pioneering journalist who has taken his departure from TV One and turned it into a digital platform. He’ll be back with a daily program, but he’ll be online instead of traditional media. He has financing from AFSCME, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, and he is also hoping for funding from us, the folks who say they miss the program and say they want unfiltered news. Roland has had it with the traditional media, and he is right to point out the lack of commentators and hosts on conventional media – the networks and the “key” cable outlets. Many of those folks have to toe the line, and can’t be but so “controversial.” But sometimes one person’s controversy is another person’s truth. The corporate media squirms with journalists call our 45th President on his many lies because some of them are still currying favor with him. And unless light shines on the filth that is occurring in Washington, it will continue. The brother I was talking to said, “this is why I miss Roland.” So Roland is coming back roaring, lifting up the oft-quoted 1827 line from Freedom’s Journal, the nation’s first Black newspaper, “We wish to plead our own cause. Too long have others spoken for us.” Roland Martin and the NNPA have made the case that if we want our story told, we have to support it. It is a shame that the Black

press is so poorly embraced. NNPA papers need ads, and they also need subscriptions, but while many of us talk a good game, we don’t sustain our press enough to help it thrive. So they go seeking ads to survive, perhaps compromising integrity while doing so. The Black press, those who plead our case, must not feel that they have to buck-dance to the whim of advertisers. Advertising, all too often, is contingent on the support of a specific position, or avoidance of controversy. Thus in launching his #Bring the Funk group, Roland is challenging African Americans who want real news to support it. That means contributing a little or a lot to grow the digital platform Roland is building. Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. In other words, everyone wants real news, and nobody wants to pay for it. One of the ways to support real news is to take out a subscription to an NNPA newspaper, or three. Another way is to help Roland bring his particular brand of reporting and analysis to us through his digital platform. Check out his powerful statement out at www.rolandmartin.com. Skyscraper Join HOLLYWOOD HERNANDEZ LIVE at the MOVIES and all around town!

Skyscraper is a very improbable yet entertaining new movie with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Johnson is a former FBI hostage negotiator who is also a war veteran. He tragically loses both his legs in a hostage situation where he tries to save a family from a mentally deranged father. (As soon as you see Johnson putting on his prosthesis legs you get that feeling that those metallic legs will come into play later in the movie.) Skyscraper is set in China and it is part Die Hard and part Towering Inferno. In the movie, a group of terrorists cause a fire on the 96th floor and Johnson, whose family is trapped in their apartment on that floor, has to rescue them but now he’s wrongly suspected of being involved in the explosion that took place in the building. The things that Johnson does in the movie are terribly unbelievable, like jumping from tower to tower

from the 200th floor. I also think Duct Tape must have a sponsor tie in with the film because there are a number of running gags involving Duct Tape. Besides the action, the importance of family is a strong theme in the movie. From the opening scene, where Johnson loses his legs trying to save a family, to the scenes in the world’s highest building where he has to rescue his own family, Johnson’s character shows that there isn’t anything he would not do to save his family. Summertime is a time to suspend all disbelief with blockbuster movies. If you can do that with this movie I think you’ll find it enjoyable. It’s rated PG-13 and on my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” I rate Skyscraper a LARGE.

The Essence Festival was a dynamic weekend of fun and inspiration! The Festival was full of uplifting and empowering conversations. From the panels, workshops, consultations, expo tables to delicious food, the Festival left attendees feeling enlightened, rejuvenated and ready to live their best life. More than 510,000 attended the 2018 Essence Festival in New Orleans. The 2017 smash hit, "Girls Trip," gave the world a taste of this fun-filled event. Each day at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center where most of the festivities were held, there were a wide array of empowerment seminars that were free and open to the public, many of which featured high-profile celebrities. The inaugural Fundraising King and Queen Servant Gala was held on Sunday, July 15, by WAYO, The Where Are You Outreach, which provides food, clothes and personal items for the homeless in Dallas.

The event was sold out and featured honorees who are involved in the community with various outreach programs for the area homeless.

The honorees included Jeffery Polk, who's organization REST EASY HOMELESS ORG A N I Z AT I O N feeds the homeless in downtown Dallas. Carmina Barnett, who is a Stellar Award winner and who has spent

over 18 years at local gospel station, Heaven 97 was also honored. Nine-year-old Alia Stenson, whose LET'S START GIVING F O U N D AT I O N was started when she was only five year's old, was an honoree; along with 1011 Grill, Kenn Webb, the Chair of The City of Dallas Homeless Commission; Sven Nickerson, the founder of FAITH WALKER CHARITIES, an or-

ganization that has feed over 10,000 individuals and Rebecca Lopez, an influential WFAA-TV reporter who was named as one of the Top 25 Women in Dallas. WAYO's ultimate goal is to procure a facility where the homeless can receive medical attention, meals and training that can get them off the street and back into the workplace.

“Well that’s what’s wrong with the court judge…A Black man ain’t got a chance down here. Look at all the Niggas in this court. You got enough Niggas here to make a Tarzan Movie!” – Fred Sanford, 1974 In Episode 15 of the groundbreaking television comedy: “Sanford and Son,” Redd Foxx made history by using the N-Word on a prime-time TV show. January 11, 1974, is etched in comedic history for that very reason. If Redd were here today, he wouldn’t find the Supreme Court nor Trump’s nominee to fill the vacancy of Justice Anthony Kennedy even remotely amusing. The United States Supreme Court has become a cesspool of political bargains and professional backslapping. The SCOTUS seems driven to sanction party platforms and satisfy the whims of the majority. Donald Trump followed his choice of Neil Gorsuch with Ultra-Conservative Brett Kavanaugh. One hails from Harvard, the other from Yale. As you approach the bench, a few things jump out at you. The supreme judiciary and repository of justice in Maya Angelou’s “Yet to be United States,” maintains some unspoken rules of inclusion. There is an educational caste system and applicants must be a graduate of either Yale or Harvard. The historical hurdles also involve race and gender. Since its inception in March of 1789, SCOTUS has had six (6) of its 113 sitting jurists who were not White males. The court has had four women: Justice Sandra Day O’Connor who became the first woman seated in 1981; Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Elena Kagan. The court has had two males born Black;

Justice Thurgood Marshall and Injustice Clarence Thomas (pronounced Tom-Ass). The latter of the two is severely hen-pecked and suffers from a debilitating dementia brought on by Black self-hatred. The remnants of what was purported at one time to be a “great legal mind,” has been bleached with bias. The traditional decorum of the Supreme Court Justices has been injured by the need for notoriety and camaraderie. Antonin Scalia was exceptionally open in his fondness for the GOP and died in West

Texas among political allies. The still-photo of the “Birthday boy,” Thomas, standing next to the seated POTUS just last month, was telling and troubling. The photo op modeled a scene from the movie “Django Unchained.” “Stephen,” the self-deprecating house Negro, is proudly standing near his supreme and master; “Calvin Candie.” Thomas personifies what happens when the oppressed becomes the handmaiden to the “Oppressor.” Thomas joined the court as a minority of humble beginnings and

means; however, his predictable votes are solidly aligned with the privileged and powerful. Benedict Arnold ain’t got shit on Clarence Thomas. The Far-Right feigns the “Founding Fathers” as their mantle and mantra, but Washington, Adams, Monroe, Jefferson and Madison are turning over in their graves. The betrayal of Merrick Garland, the appointment of Gorsuch, and the ideologically chosen candidate Kavanagh are all rank and foul. When the Federalist Society holds sway over the Senate confirmation process, SCOTUS loses all credibility. During the Gorsuch “campaign,” one “anonymous” donor is said to have invested $18 million dollars in “dark money.” Americans are used to seeing their politicians get pimped, but the SCOTUS has been a constant refuge for the poor, the disenfranchised and the marginalized. The SCOTUS has become a cesspool whose filters are muddied by the still, stale waters of cronyism, big business and White supremacy. At least Dred Scott was blunt; “A black man has no right that a white man is bound to respect.” Allowing gerrymandering and suppressing voters rights is obscured injustice but no less evil. There was no lack of Black and poor folks in Sanford’s courtroom scene. Conversely, America’s Supreme Cesspool will never have many minorities, women or non-Ivy-League-educated jurists in our lifetime. Tarzan lookalikes hold the “swing vote” on this court and will continue to treat the politically powerless like the N-Word. #QuitPlayin Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and

Securing Funding for Flood Control From the Capitol

The recent allocation of $367 million of federal money to ensure that residents of North Texas are protected from flooding resulted from years of advocacy by local members of Congress who insisted that our region needed infrastructure improvements to protect residents and businesses from potentially dangerous flooding. The funds, which will be spent by the Army Corps of Engineers, were approved by Congress early this year. Improvements in our flood control systems are extremely important to residents of North Texas, to their homes and to their

businesses. The floods that devastated our region in 2015, and the crushing results of Hurricane Harvey in South Texas, demonstrated our vulnerability to extreme weather patterns and events. The federal monies will allow us to make significant enhancements to the Dallas Floodway, and the Floodway Extension. They will also give us the opportunity to upgrade and repair the Lewisville dam which is of vital importance to many of those who live and work along portions of the Trinity River. The dam protects a number of cities, including Dallas. Engineers predict that a breach in the dam during a storm could result in significant flooding in downtown

Dallas, as much as fifty feet of water. Pump stations in Dallas County will either be replaced or enhanced with the funding. The nearly twenty-three miles of levees on the Trinity will be raised to eight feet, ensuring more protection against rising storm waters. Members of Congress from North Texas lobbied the administration vigorously for the funding, informing its representatives of the critical needs in our region. We worked on a bi-partisan basis to secure the funding. Together, we accomplished something of critical importance to those who elected us. The funding for North Texas is part of a $5 billion package that will be spent in Texas to enhance flood control

projects, make needed infrastructure repairs and restore wholeness to those whose lives and property have been severely damaged or lost. The North Texas funding represents an incredible opportunity for the city of Dallas and its leadership as they make every effort to protect people and property from catastrophe. As our infrastructure ages it is important that we pay attention, and when necessary insist upon repairs and enhancements. We must always protect our citizens, their families, their homes and businesses from harm and danger. It is the prudent and equitable thing to do.

Parents Yes, this is summer vacation time, but the learning does not have to stop!

Back-to-school list should include vaccinations Parkland health centers offer immunizations on ‘Walk-in Wednesdays’ In about a month students throughout Dallas County will be headed back to school and as summer break nears its end, pediatricians recommend that parents include their children’s immunizations on their back-toschool to-do lists. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to one of Parkland Health & Hospital System’s Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) health centers or Youth & Family centers located throughout Dallas County. Once again, Parkland COPCs are offering convenient immunizations on “Walk-in Wednesdays.” “Parents can bring their children for immunizations on Wednesdays without having to make an appointment. We encourage parents to do so because vaccines are a vital part of your child’s health,” said Barbara Durso, MD, lead staff physician at Parkland’s Oak West Health Center. “When children are not vaccinated, they are at increased risk for diseases and can put others in danger by spreading diseases in their classrooms and community.”

In Texas, before entering kindergarten, children are required to have been vaccinated for Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis; Polio; Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR); Hepatitis B; Varicella; and Hepatitis A. Children in daycare must also be vaccinated. For older students, a Diphtheria/ Tetanus/Pertussis booster and Meningococcal vaccines are required for school. In 2017, 94 cases of mumps were reported in Dallas County schools. “Viral diseases like mumps are spread by droplets of saliva or mucus of an infected person, usually by someone’s coughs or sneezes or by sharing food and drink. That’s why vaccination and proper hand-washing are so important to prevent the spread of such diseases,” Dr. Durso said. Although vaccines are often thought of as something for young children, preteens and teens also need immunizations to stay healthy throughout the school year. “Vaccines protect against serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, including meningitis and cancers caused by HPV infections,” Dr. Durso said. Immunizations during Walkin-Wednesdays will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parents can still walk-in with their children for vaccinations on other days,

but appointments are recommended. To schedule an appointment for your child at a Parkland COPC health center, please call 214-266-4000. To schedule an appointment at a Youth & Family Center, please call 214-266-1257. Parkland accepts Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and most major insurance plans. If you do not have insurance, Parkland can provide financial screening to determine if patients qualify for financial assistance. In addition, the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program may be able to help. The VFC program provides vaccines for children ages 18 years and younger, who are not insured, Medicaid-eligible, or American Indian or Alaska Native. “Vaccines keep children healthy by preventing disease.
