MY TRUTH

LaQuitta Thomas loves Southern University. Last weekend, she was elected and has the distinction of being the first woman to head the Southern University Alumni Federation. A 1993 graduate of that dynamic HBCU, whose main campus is in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; LaQuitta is a passionate woman who tackles everything she undertakes with enthusiasm, confidence, skill and commitment. I like to jokingly present a narrative of a young girl who growing up always wanted to attend my alma mater, the great Florida A&M University (FAMU). The idea of attending such a phenomenal school was actually on the minds of so many young boys and girls around the country, and even abroad. But as LaQuitta prepared for college, she saw her wishes swiftly moving further and further from her fingertips. So it was off to Southern University (her second choice) she went, seeking a degree in math/computer science. Now this brings me to My Truth.

HBCU Love begins with YOU And first I must begin with dear Madam President LaQuitta Thomas’ truth. She didn’t really want to go to FAMU, I just like to say that everyone wishes they could be a Rattler! And

SU LaQuitta Thomas while we can have a spirited rivalry, we enjoy HBCU Love. Like me, LaQuitta loves HBCUs and she supports them all. Now she has a chance, as president of the national alumni association; a position she has also held locally, to be the ultimate ambassador for her school. When people think of LaQuitta, they never doubt her love and commitment to the school.

I remember another Southern Jaguar, my good friend John Woods. Also a former president of the Dallas Southern Alumni Association, John worked tirelessly and gave his all for his alma mater. When I received the news that LaQuitta had won, I cheered like it was a victory for FAMU. And in my mind, it was because any victory for an HBCU is a victory for us all. For years I have been thinking about what would happen to FAMU after I am long gone. I’ve thought about the other HBCUs also because I want them to be around too. So for FAMU, as a life member of the alumni association and past president of the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter; I try to show love any and every opportunity I have. I’ve done it all: gave money, recruited students, reclaimed alumni, visited campus and classes, solicited support and more. I need to do more, however!

I Messenger And so do so many of us. No, everyone is not going to be a leader in the alumni association, but they can be a big supporter in so many ways. I remember in college, other students would be called out for being “shirt-wearers” or just showing up for parties. The difference, I saw back then, was that at least they were purchasing their own shirts and tickets for events. Let’s face it. Giving has to increase. We, alumni, have to be the biggest cheerleaders, donors and champions of our schools. Don’t you realize that if you talk bad about, cast dispersions upon, and fail to support, you are the biggest of our HBCUs’ problems? We have to write those checks, send our children, recruit, and shout from the rooftops. Also, include in your will. No, you don’t have to do it all, but you have to do something. You should!

Election updates Frizell calls for unity among Democrats

After several months of speculation, Dallas County District Attorney candidate Judge Elizabeth Frizell announced on Monday that she will not continue her efforts to contest the primary election where she fell short by about 516 votes in a spirited race with former judge John Creuzot for the Democratic nomination. “It was so close,” she said to supporters and family members who gathered at the IBOC Church. “I have decided to dismiss my lawsuit and I will be supporting John Creuzot and all Democrats. Although ending, I will continue working at my private practice as I pursue justice one case at a time.” In a program that opened up with a prayer and overview from her pastor, Rev. Denny D. Davis of St. John’s Baptist Church in Grand Prairie, the focus was on educating on the issues and “uniting” Democrats in preparation for the November 6, 2018 general election. “We support and believe in Judge Elizabeth Frizell,” he said. “A lot has happened since the election and we have been waiting to hear where we stand and what is going to happen next.” Acknowledging that she had received several calls asking about the election, Judge Frizell shared a rundown of events following the primary election. Noting that days after the election the numbers had not been certified; once the official tally was released, she said there was talk and consideration of a recount. At that time, she said, as she explained the recount process; she decided against pursuing that option and instead began reviewing the election code, which

helped her to understand the difference between a recount (which would cost almost $40,000) and contesting the results. In an assertion that was backed by Dallas County election officials, a recount would not deal with issues of voter irregularities or fraud; just two issues raised during and since the primary. And it was an ongoing investigation that was of interest to not only Judge Frizell, but many of her supporters. “I did not start the investigation,” she said. “I wanted to see the ballots that were under investigation so I filed suit and we have been in litigation for the past three months.” A series of events, including one judge recusal and transfer, and the failure of a new judge to be appointed in a timely manner; could be divisive, pointed out Judge Frizell. Judge Creuzot agreed. Reached at a criminal justice conference where he is an annual presenter, he said that the two long-time friends had talked and that he has always been supportive of her. As far as the race is concerned, he’s looking ahead. “We’re going to keep doing what we’ve been doing, and that’s campaigning.” Focusing on victory has to be the objective, according to Judge Frizell. “It’s time to move forward, look toward Novembezr 6,” she continued, adding that elected officials must be held accountable and the Democratic Party must unify and be reflective of Dallas County. “We’re the change we want. I want us to unite as a party that reflects our views and values.”

Businessman Albert Black has officially filed as a candidate in the Dallas mayoral election scheduled for May 4, 2019 with the launching of his campaign at a community event in the neighborhood he was born, Frazier Courts, at the Frazier Community Center, 4846 Elsie Faye Heggins St. A resident of Oak Cliff, Mr. Black has lever-

aged a tireless work ethic and natural leadership ability to become a highly accomplished community leader. Until recently, he served as President and CEO of On-Target Supplies & Logistics, a company he founded in 1982 with his wife, Gwyneith, by working two jobs and watching over their young children in the office. Three decades later, the Blacks have deftly grown the company to one of the largest minority-owned firms in Dallas, with close to 200 employees. His civic experience includes volunteering with community organizations like the Park South YMCA and eventually serving as the first African American Chairman of the Dallas Regional Chamber, where he worked closely with former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk to develop and fulfill international joint trade missions, building productive and sustaining business partnerships for the city of Dallas. Years after working as a cook in a Baylor Hospital kitchen, he became Chairman of the Board for Baylor Health Care System, helping to oversee its multibillion-dollar merger with Scott and White and establishing the first specialty health center in Frazier Courts – The Baylor Diabetes Health & Wellness Institute. As current Chairman of the Charles Sammons Cancer Center, Mr. Black has continued his advocacy for high-quality, accessible health care. Phoenix, Arizona – On Saturday, July 21, 2018, the temperature was above 100 degrees, but the weather was not all that was hot! The USA’s most recognized Hispanic Organization, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) held its 89th Convention and the number one resolve was to elect its National President. The election was held mid-morning to early afternoon and the voting process took approximately six hours. As current president, Roger Rocha taps on the microphone to get audience attention, mostly to quiet down the crowd who was al-

ready chanting, “Domingo, Domingo, Domingo,” he calls the numbers, “for Domingo Garcia, 713 votes, for Darryl Morin 237. Mr. Garcia has pledged to continue his work to help the undocumented, so they may be treated with respect, to revamp the organization, to continue his efforts for the Dreamers, and to increase the LULAC membership to one million members. Mr. Garcia received his B.A. in political science from the University of North Texas in 1980. In 1983, he obtained his J.D. from Texas Southern University in Houston. He earned a Master’s degree in International Relations from El Colegio de Mexico in Mexico City. In 1988, Mr. Garcia was elected to the Democratic National Committee, where he served for eight years. He sat on the executive committee and was chair of the Latino caucus. He also served on the Dallas City Council from 1991 to 1995 and in 1993, Mr. Garcia became the first Latino ever elected Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Dallas. Mr. Garcia also served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1996 to 2002. During this time, he served on the Criminal Jurisprudence and Judicial Affairs Committees. In addition to the election, there were many “hot” things going on at the convention. First was the keynote speaker lineup: the historical Astronaut Jose Hernandez, the lovely CNN News Commentator Ana Navarro and the concluding dinner gala with former Vice President Joe Biden. If we would have to give Mr. Garcia credit for something, I would credit him for: being

co-author of the original “Texas Dream Act” [House Bill1403], June 16, 2001, sponsored by Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) and co-authored by Rick Noriega (D-Houston), Fred Hill (R-Richardson), Elvira Reyna (R-Mesquite), and Ismael Flores (D-Plainview); and providing the verbiage that he submitted to President Obama for the implementation of the “Deferred Action” which took place in June 15, 2012, allowing young DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and students to remain in the USA and allowed to have workers permits. Mr. Garcia has an immense love for the citizens of our great Nation, especially those who have encountered civil rights violations. His love for the community is inspiring to say the least. That love has been a blessing to many families and he has utilized his civil rights organizing skills to bring attention and action to many civil rights issues especially the most recent discrimination of immigrants and the separation of children from their parents. He is known to be considered “El Padre de la comunidad,” for his philanthropy and his support of numerous scholarships and other contributions to so many entities and persons. Finally, and most importantly, he is a God-centered man, an honorable husband to his lovely wife, Dr. Elba Garcia (Dallas County Commissioner District 4, and a dentist), and a great father to his two sons, Joaquin and Fernando. He is the proud son of immigrants and of native blood lines.

IDA B. WELLS Barnett The crusading journalist, Ida B. Wells was born on July 16, 1862. Although she made her mark as a journalist, she was also a social worker, advocate, feminist, and organization leader. She too often gets short shrift in history, mainly because she did not go along to get along with the men of her era, crossing swords with the likes of Dr. W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington. The same fierceness that pushed her to organize against lynching was the fierceness that propelled her to confront injustice within African American organizations and in women’s organizations. Indeed, the historic 1913 Women’s Suffrage March intended to either exclude Black women or to segregate them at the end of the march. Ida B. Wells and Mary Church Terrell were among the Black women who marched with the women of their state, refusing to march at the rear. Ida B. Wells’ pen was so sharp that it got her banned from the state of Tennessee after she besmirched white women’s morality in a treatise about lynching. No matter! She kept writing and kept it moving, constantly speaking truth to power. Now, Rev. Jesse Jackson is among those clamoring for an anti-lynching law, since none was ever passed, despite several efforts. Even though anti-lynching legislation passed the House of Representatives in 1922, Senate Democrats prevented the passage of the law by filibuster. In any case, Ida B. Wells spent her life championing the cause of racial justice. Unfortunately, there are too few today who have her passion, her focus, and her energy. In these troubled times, investigative journalists like her are far

too rare. In an era when there is so much “drive-by” reporting done

Any Black man who looked sideways at the wrong white woman was subject to lynching,

by anyone with a cell phone and access to the internet, too few are willing to put in the kind of work that Ida B. Wells put in, even though we have more tools than she had. Thus we get momentary Internet outrage when out-of-control whites attack Black people. Where is the follow-up? Ida B. Wells had nerve, audacity. She was on fire for justice, and it showed in her writing. Her mantra is best summarized in her quote, “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” In her book, “Southern Horrors,” she detailed the horrors of lynching and the fact that so many lynchings were the result of rumor, not fact.

so much so that even in the rare case where Black men were acquitted of rape, rabid crowds still lynched them. At least 3,436 people were lynched between 1889 and 1922. In just the four years between 1918 and 1921, twenty-eight people were publicly burned to death. And while Black men were the primary victims of lynching, Black women, union organizers, and others were also lynched. Because of Ida B. Wells, we have more detail than we might have had about these horrors. Few have the audacity of Ida B. Wells, but Bryan Stevenson surely does. His National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgom-

ery, Alabama lifts up the name of the more than four thousand African Americans who were lynched in the South between 1877 and 1950. Stevenson, through his work to save African Americans from death row, makes the connection between historical lynching and modern-day criminal injustice. He is as eloquent as Ida B and as purposeful. Would that we had hundreds more of him, hundreds more of Wells. It is shameful that there is no statue of Ida B. Wells anywhere in this nation. There should be one at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi, where she once matriculated. There should be one in Chicago, where she lived from 1893 until her death in 1931. There should be one somewhere in Washington, DC, perhaps along the route of the 1913 Women’s Suffrage March. She should be lifted up to remind us of the power of audacity. Her great-granddaughter, Michelle Duster, has been raising money to build a statue in Chicago, but she is still about $100,000 short of her goal. You can donate to the cause through http://www. idabwellsmonument.org/. We need to have more Black women, and especially women like Ida B. Wells, represented in our nation’s statuary. We need to be reminded of Wells and her audacity, especially now, when so many seem to have been silenced by 45’s trickery. Our African American leaders need to stop with the complicity of go along to get along. We need an Ida B. Wells now! (Congresswoman Maxine Waters comes close). We need unfiltered audacity!

“Equalizer 2” as a sequel is great

“Equalizer 2” is a first for Denzel Washington. It’s the first sequel he’s ever done and, along with director Antoine Fuqua, he shows us that there is still some gold left in that mine. In “Equalizer 2,” Washington is back as retired C.I.A. agent Robert McCall and he’s still handing out justice for the defenseless. This time instead of working in a hardware store, McCall is a Lyft driver and in the sequel Washington’s character is a more friendly, less dark charac-

ter than in the first movie. That is until it gets personal and then he goes on a killing spree to avenge the people he loved who were killed by a secret force of rogue C.I.A. agents. The movie is filled with chase scenes, car crashes and plenty of fighting that Washington did much of himself as director Fuqua used Washington’s boxing skills to make the movie even more realistic. The fight scenes are the best part of the movie. The movie is also a dark comedy with

Washington making jokes to go along with the beatings that he dishes out. Like the scene where he gives a victim a chance to call 911 right before he whips his butt. There’s a lot to like in “Equalizer 2.” I liked the movie just as much as the first one. It’s rated R for violence and has a run time of 2 hours and 1 minute (and that time flies by). On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” my rating for Equalizer 2 is a JUMBO.

You’re an asshole you’re a piece of shit,’” Maurice Rucker recalled. – The Root, July 23, 2018 If you shop online for a shoe with rhinestones, suddenly rhinestone shoes show up everywhere. If you purchase an airline ticket, everything related to travel pops up. Like it or not, “Dynamic Ads” are as annoying to consumers as they are appealing to marketers. And they ain’t going nowhere. So, this T-Shirt shows up. I didn’t search for T-Shirts, I don’t really like T-Shirts. You’ve seen it before because they are often advertised on Facebook. It simply but sagaciously reads; “Don’t let your President Get your Ass Whooped.” There’s one technical problem. The message transliterates as an ethnic quip. That being the case, one word needs to be changed; “Don’t let your President get your Ass Whipped.” With Black parents, you don’t get “whooped”, you get whipped! The difference is two-fold, in meaning and intensity. According to Rucker, the customer didn’t stop there, adding, “If Trump wasn’t president, you wouldn’t even have a job” and “you’re from the ghetto, what do you know?” If only I could’ve frozen the frame in this scene between 60-year-old store associate Maurice Rucker and one of Trump’s nameless “Deplorables.” The employee who was recently named “Cashier of the Month” could have exchanged his orange

smock for a DLYPGYAW T-Shirt. Trump has created an environment where racists are bold, brazen, vicious and vocal. DLYPGYAW conveys a caveat for ra-

bid Trump extremists. “Maurice Rucker, 60, lost his job at an Albany, N.Y., Home Depot after he said he was subjected to racist verbal abuse, which he said was unlike anything he’s ever experienced. The fallout has left him shocked, WNYT reports. Rucker said the incident all started last Thursday when a customer approached checkout with an unleashed dog. “I’ve lived all over the country and I’ve had no one talk to me the way that this guy talked to me,” Rucker said. The barrage of insults continued until

the 60-year-old couldn’t take it anymore. As someone who teaches customer service strategies, I struggled to find Home Depot’s rationale for firing this brother. Moreover, Black folks think Rucker deserved a plaque and a cash award for not unloading on this arrogant example of white superiority. Personally, I’ve been called Nigger, Coon, Jungle Bunny and worse many times, but always on the phone, never in person. One of us would have gotten an ass whipping on aisle 13. Rucker deserves that Nobel Peace Prize Trump thought he was up for. Home Depot spokesman Stephan Holmes said Rucker was fired because the customer called to complain about Rucker and he did not follow their policy to “disengage.” After internet warriors and journalists plastered the Twitter accounts of Home Depot executives with protests, the company relented and changed their tune. They offered Rucker his job back, but he hasn’t decided whether or not to take it. As I read another account of the incident on timesunion.com, Rucker’s hesitance made sense. The columnist brought it into perspective in one paragraph. “I’m happy to say that readers reacted strongly to Rucker’s story. Many were furious with Home Depot — and not only because Rucker was fired. Many couldn’t believe he had worked for the company for 10 years, starting in a store near Boston, yet had only seen his hourly rate increase from $12 to $12.78 an hour over the period.” Rucker was fired from a job that paid him like a Nigger because he didn’t react correctly when he was treated like one. The dynamic advertisement didn’t get me, but I bought a T-Shirt anyway. This President is gonna get a lot of people’s ass whipped and they need to be warned. Vincent L. Mavericks look to the future in draft picks Doncic and Brunson By Dorothy J Gentry Sports Editor

Looking to both to rebuild and get back to winning and making the playoffs, the Dallas Mavericks drafted European sensation Luka Doncic and twotime NCAA Champion (2016, 2018) Jalen Brunson in last month’s 2018 NBA Draft. The Mavericks held the fifth pick in this year’s draft for the first time in the

38-year draft history of the franchise. Doncic was chosen third overall by the Atlanta Hawks ,but the Mavs entered a deal that let them acquire the draft rights to Doncic from the Hawks in exchange for the draft rights to fifth overall pick Trae Young and a protected 2019 first round draft pick. They got the player they wanted all along. “We’re very fortunate. Luka Doncic is the guy that we targeted to get in this draft if there was any way possible to do it,” said Head Coach Rick Carlisle. “At one point, we felt there might be a slight chance he could fall to us, but it became pretty clear that there was no way that was going to happen, he was just too

good. “We made this deal and we moved up (in the draft) and got him. Atlanta got a great player in Trae Young and we got a guy we think is a franchise foundation piece and so, it’s a really great day for the Mavericks organization,” Carlisle continued. Doncic (6-7, 218 lbs.) is the reigning EuroLeague Most Valuable Player and EuroLeague Final 4 Most Valuable Player after leading Real Madrid to the 2017-18 EuroLeague title. He was the youngest player ever to garner both awards. “I am truly excited to be a part of the Dallas Mavericks, the NBA. I am happy to play with all the superstars. It’s like a dream come true,” said Doncic during his introductory press conference at American Airlines Center. “Dirk is so amazing. There are no words to describe him. He’s a great person, great leader. I am really happy to be part of his career and I want to learn so much from him.” Carlisle said Doncic is a playmaker who will “make plays and make people better.” “This kid has won everything there is to win in European and international basketball and he’s done it at an age that is unprecedented,” Carlisle said. “He’s going to be a great guy to play with Dennis Smith Jr., Harrison Barnes,

they’re going to enhance his game, he’s going to enhance theirs. We’re really excited. He seems like a humble kid, that really loves to play. It’s a big day for us.” Jalen Brunson The Mavs also selected guard Jalen Brunson with the 33rd overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Brunson (6-3, 190 lbs.) is a two-time NCAA Champion (2016, 2018) and an early-entry candidate to this year’s draft after spending three seasons at Villanova. As a junior, he averaged 18.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists on his way to winning Big East Player of the Year, Big East Scholar Athlete of the Year and the Bob Cousy Award, given to the nation’s top point guard. He was also the only player in a Power 6 conference last season to shoot better than .520 from the field, .400 from behind-the-arc and .800 from the foul line. “He’s had an amazing college career, winning the championship two out of the last three years which is a remarkable achievement,” Carlisle said. “He’s obviously a winner. I never think you can have too many playmakers on a team. “He has a real good handle on the total game, very resourceful view of the game and I think an underrated ability level and a great deal of toughness. And the character is obviously there.” Brunson said he has been welcomed, with open arms by the team. “They’re a good group of guys. I love the staff. This is a great place to be and learn,” Brunson said. “They’re inviting me in with open arms. I’m truly excited. “I will continue to get better and push forward,” Brunson said of his entry into the NBA. “I’m here now and ready to work.”
