Advances in STEM should include opportunities for young girls and minorities in the wake of Shelby County By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
Innovations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields drive our economy and produce products and services that touch all of our lives. While the size of the STEM workforce is growing at an exponential rate, the growth in diversity of STEM professionals remains stagnant. As Ranking Member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, finding ways to encourage students of all backgrounds to study and enter STEM fields has been a priority of mine. A major factor contributing to the lack of underrepresented minorities and women in STEM is insufficient early access and engagement in schools. Students often miss out on opportunities and programs due to poor outreach in their communities. Lack of engagement leaves students unaware of the possible career choices in these fields. Because of the rapid growth in the STEM workforce, we must ensure everyone is aware of opportunities where they can share their talent and skills. And I will continue to advocate for more diversity and representation of women and minorities in STEM careers. It is imperative that exposure to STEM education start at a young age. Fortunately, Dallas offers many camps and programs for students interested in STEM. Dallas ISD’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Department offers multiple free camps throughout the sum-
mer for children of all ages, and any high school student who is especially interested in STEM can apply to Dallas ISD’s School of Science and Engineering at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center. Several other local universities also offer programs for young aspiring innovators. The University of Texas at Dallas offers coding camps throughout the year, and Southern Methodist University hosts programs for promising engineers and mathematicians. By cultivating and nurturing young students from many different com-
munities, we can be confident that we will see more diversity in STEM fields in the years to come. Ever since I was first elected to the Texas State House, I have dedicated my career to bringing attention to these issues and the advancement smart policies to address them. While in Congress, I have introduced the STEM Opportunities Act that would increase diversity in STEM in colleges and universities, enrich our STEM workforce and create more role models for female and minority students much earlier in the pipeline. More recently, I cosponsored a bi-partisan bill, H.R.3316, the Code Like a Girl Act of 2017. This bill, introduced by my colleague Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (D-NV), requires the National Science Foundation to support education and research projects to
increase the participation of early elementary and even pre-K school girls in coding and other computer science lessons and activities. Research shows that elementary school boys are more likely to take a computer science class than elementary school girls. We must start early if we are going to increase the participation of women and minorities in STEM. The U.S. Department of Commerce notes that women make up only 24 percent of the STEM workforce, though women account for half of the general workforce in the United States. New faces and ideas in this field will undoubtedly lead to new innovation in the STEM disciplines. Every September in Washington, D.C., I host a Science and Technology Braintrust at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference in order to educate youth about the opportunities in STEM. Last year, at the 24th Annual Science and Technology Braintrust, I addressed the importance of diversity in the STEM professions. This year, we hope to engage a robust discussion on how to build careers in STEM and identify resources for students made available by various businesses. I am very hopeful to see so many young girls and minority students take on an interest in these fields. I am confident they will grow to become some of our greatest innovators. To maximize positive change, it is our duty to expand and transform the STEM field to include more diverse students. I pledge to continue my work on educating and diversifying the future generation of STEM scholars.
Sales Tax Holiday is Aug. 11 - 13
As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced less than $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.

MALVEAUX: Black women will rise despite unequal treatment
The LAST WORD By Dr. Julianne Malveaux Lots of women’s organizations commemorate Equal Pay Day, which this year was April 5. It meant that women, in general, would have had to work all of 2016, and until April 5, 2017, to earn the same amount of money that a man earned in 2016. Few will recognize July 31, 2017, which is the day by which African American women will have to work to earn the same money a man earned last year – seven extra months! A Latina woman will work until October, or nearly 10 extra months, to earn the same money a man earned. I wonder about our “women’s coalitions” when majority women’s organizations, like the National Organization for Women, are silent for Black Women’s Equal Pay Day. Does it matter to them? Maybe not. It matters when they want to present a multiracial, multicultural “united front” at a Women’s March, but less so at other times. The lesson, Black women, is a lesson some sisters raised in 1991, when Anita Hill testified in the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings. People had all kind of explanations for Hill’s testimony, most of them woefully wrong and viewed through a lens, darkly. Led by feminists Elsa Barkley Brown, Deborah King and Barbara Ransby, more than 1500 women raised enough money to pay for

an ad in the New York Times on November 17, 1991. The ad, titled “African American Women in Defense of Ourselves” (AAWIDO), reminded Black women that no one should speak for us, except us. No one can be relied on to defend us, except us. And no one can be depended on to celebrate us, but us. No one can lead advocacy for our equal pay, but us. I’m not dismissing our allies – “woke” men of color, especially Black men, “woke” white women and other women of color. I’m just saying we can’t count on everybody to be woke. Evidence – was there an equal amount of noise on Black Women’s Equal Pay Day? And in the Reign of Ignorance, there is likely to be even less noise, as the House Appropriations Committee has actually proposed defunding a program that collects salary data from employers. Without the data, we won’t know the extent of pay discrimination. We know plenty now. We know that Black women earn 63 cents for every dollar paid to white men, compared to the 80 cents white women earn. We know that Black women in Louisiana earn the least compared to white men, about 48 cents on the dollar! In comparison, Black women in Missouri, Tennessee, Maryland and Pennsylvania earn 68 cents for every dollar a white man earns. Whatever we earn, it ain’t equal. What we don’t know is how
women fare inside some organizations. And you can’t dismantle pay discrimination without having the details of it. Under President Obama, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
established requirements to provide pay transparency. Businesses with more than 100 employees were required to start releasing salary data in March 2018. Of course, those who want to sweep pay discrimination under the rug argued that it would cost too much to collect the data. And now, the Republican Congress says that no resources may be used to collect this very necessary data. It reminds me of the old folks who used to say, “you don’t miss what you can’t measure”. But we can measure the pay inequity, and we can see it in the quality of women’s lives. We might not be able to point a finger at one company or another (Republicans are also likely to make class action lawsuits more challenging), but we have enough aggregate data to know that there is pervasive gender discrimination in the workplace, and that Black women shoulder an extra burden because of the intersection between race and gender. Not only do African American women earn less, but we also
catch more shade because of our skin color, because of who we are and what we represent. Former First Lady Michelle Obama has spoken out, though very gently, about the racism she experienced while in office. At a recent gathering in Colorado, she spoke about the many “cuts” she experienced, and told the Denver Post that “The shards that cut me the deepest were the ones that intended to cut,” referring to comments about her looks, and especially those that referred to her as “an ape.” She said she was dismayed in “Knowing that after eight years of working really hard for this country, there are still people who won’t see me for what I am because of my skin color.” When I read Michelle Obama’s comment, I thought about Dr. Maya Angelou and her classic poem, Still I Rise. One stanza reads, “You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I’ll rise.” Black women endure unequal pay, disrespectful treatment (consider the treatment of Senator Kamala Harris, or Congresswomen Maxine Waters), police beatings, and more. And yet we are still here. And yet, “when they go low, we go high.” Julianne Malveaux is an economist, author, and Founder of Economic Education. Her podcast, “It’s Personal with Dr. J” is available on iTunes. Her latest book “Are We Better Off: Race, Obama and public policy is available via amazon.com

A Bump for Trump?
QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall
“President Trump delivered a tough-talking speech in Long Island Friday filled with a vow to crush the MS13 gang, an apparent dig at Mayor de Blasio and an appeal to police to rough up suspects in custody. “When you see these towns, and you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon...I said, ‘Please don’t be too nice,” Trump told a group of police cadets assembled at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood. “Like when you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head... You can take your hand away, ok?” The remark drew sustained applause and cheers from the cadets.” – THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Believe me, I was not among the ones who cheered and laughed at Donald J. Trump on this one. This may have been a musical moment in the art of Trumpism, but these kinds of overtures are just descants over Chopin’s “Death March” in urban communities. First and foremost, you
have to dig real deep to make MS-13 a major emphasis of national public safety. This “international” criminal gang, purported to have its commencement and base in Los Angeles, is basically Mexican-American. And of course the Mexican tie allows Trump et al to buoy their claim that Mexico exports its worst, which requires a wall and a policy
African-Americans need always be leery about the treatment of what comedian Richard Pryor called the “New Niggers.” Pryor explain that no matter who racists called out as the “New Niggers,” (Mexicans, Middle Easterners, you name it) America’s original “Niggers” are never off the hook. Any attack on the “new” includes the former.
so stringent that no Mexican dare attempt to penetrate it. This new war on MS-13 sounds impressive and much needed. I encountered a relatively critically thinking brother who thought the idea had merit. Apparently he hadn’t thought it through. Let me remix what Trump said and what Trump and the Republicans never have to say. Trump, along with his loudest sycophant in the Crackerocracy, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, are dog whistling.
If immigration officers (ICE) invade the Barrios of L.A. or Dallas looking for “dangerous” Mexicans, their poor neighbors are also put into play. There are plenty of undocumented workers in Beverly Hills and Dallas’ Park Cities…show me a news account of any raids in these areas…I’ll wait!! It’s preposterous to allow your eyes to be directed toward MS-13, while the Aryan Brotherhood, (aka “The Brand, The AB”) is operative and growing. The Brotherhood major in Meth

and Heroine, however, this administration has a laser trained on “Bad” Mexicans. Any real war on drugs has to be colorblind and prone to battle in every demographic. The Brotherhood feeds more poor Trump supporters suffering from addiction than MS-13 ever could. MS13 is gruesomely violent, but so was every successful drug cartel in history. The “Mafia” era was dominated by leaders from every corner of Europe and showed America and the world how grotesque violence can become. The Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre wasn’t an eight episode epic on HBO…its bona fide Americana! The fact that Trump would have the nerve to make a statement of this order in public is scary. The fact that uniformed officers in plain sight would so lavishly laud him is frightening. But at a time when police shootings and excessive force are metastasizing and growing, Trump’s endorsement of official oppression is untimely and unwise. The real irony is that after the speech was over, I saw a Secret Service policeman put his hand over the head of known criminal as he got into the main car of the presidential motorcade. Somebody should bump his head and force some sense into it.

grounded with a very pleasant personality. The Hampton University graduate is a go-getter. She’s respectful, conscientious and super smart. Not only does the St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church member have book sense with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Hampton and Masters degrees in business and accounting from Texas A&M -Commerce and the University of Miami; she’s beautiful, talented, athletic and well-rounded. I wasn’t surprised when I heard that she was in competition to win a franchise. The contest got down to the wire when seven contestants took to the internet rallying their teams to vote. From the beginning Alyson had the lead. And she kept that lead, pulling ahead significantly at the end. Many thought it was a done deal, but there was another step. The top three vote getters had to go for a round of interviews. When I talked to her about the competition, she had nothing but kind words for the other contestants. She praised their efforts, discussed their merits and methodically laid out why she thought they were excellent choices. Did I tell you this young lady was impressive?! Here are a few questions I had for 7-Eleven once the decision was made. After all I had to know what
12
was going on since I committed to working 10 hours a month, unpaid, at whatever location Alyson chooses: Q. In the pitch, it reads, “She will also be able to choose any of 7-Eleven’s convenience store franchises that are available in the U.S.” Are any available in the D/FW market?
A. Yes. You can find a full list of available 7-Eleven stores at franchise.7-eleven.com. Q. FOLLOW-UP... If she will be acquiring a store that is already in existence, any of the stores without an owner, what happened to render them ownerless? Are the stores without owners in problem areas? A. Stores available to franchise are currently corporate-owned. Many of these locations are either brand new or changing over from a former Franchisee. Q. Does 7-11 plan to build any
new ones? If so, will those be an option for Ms. Lawson? A. Yes. If Alyson Lawson would like to wait on a brand new store to open she may do so. Q. Initially the impression was given that there would be ONE winner. When and why was the decision made to give to all three finalists? A. “To say that each candidate was impressive would be an understatement,” said President and CEO Joe DePinto of his interviews with the three finalists. “Each brings a unique set of strengths. In addition, all are extremely community-oriented and have strong business, leadership and interpersonal skills. Those are qualities successful franchisees need. Any one of them would make a great independent business owner at 7-Eleven, and I couldn’t see selecting just one, when all three are exactly the type of folks we want as franchisees and as part of the 7-Eleven network.” Q. How long is the process from today to grand opening? A. The usual franchising process from application period to store opening is 3-6 months. However, the timeline may be a bit longer if Alyson chooses to pick a brand new store that is not already open. I anxiously awaiting her grand opening so we can share in her success by supporting her. She deserves it!

Big 3 games pack AA Center
Story and Photos By Dorothy J. Gentry Garland Journal
The Big3 Week 6 in Dallas saw no shortage of drama, questions and the eventual growing pains associated with a new phenomenon: a missing player/coach, a legendary rap artist in the house, and a team remaining undefeated. Allen Iverson, that's Hall of Famer Allen Iverson, was missing in action for Sunday's Big3 Dallas stop. He did not show up, unbeknownst to Big3 officials, who hastily issued a statement acknowledging they were not aware of his absence and were "launching an investigation.” Once word got around the packed American Airlines Center, literally half the audience abruptly got up and left, many wearing his signature Philadelphia 76ers jersey. Four days after his big no-show Iverson issued a statement on his official Instagram page apologizing for, well, just not showing up. "First and foremost, I apologize to Ice Cube & my Big 3 family, my fans and everyone disappointed by my absence in Dallas this past weekend," Iverson wrote. "I have spoken with Ice Cube directly regarding the details of my absence. I will do my best to make up for this moving forward on the Big 3 tour." TMZ Sports has reported Iverson was spotted at a Chicago casino early Sunday morning -- hours before he was supposed to be in Dallas for the game. Since his disappearing act, Iver-

JAZZ Guitarist Chuck Loeb dies at 61
The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL) is saddened by the death of renowned smooth and contemporary jazz artist, Chuck Loeb. Loeb, 61, was one of the notable guest artists slated to perform on TBAAL’s upcoming Riverfront Jazz Festival, Labor Day Weekend, September 1-3, 2017 at Texas Horse Park, 811 Pemberton Hill Road, Dallas, 75217. “This was an incredible shock to me. We extend our sympathy and words of encouragement to his family, friends and fans,” said Curtis King, the Festival’s Founder and Producer. “Chuck Loeb was one of the very first artists who said yes immediately to performing in the Dallas festival. When he and his management reviewed our request stating that the festival proceeds would benefit TBAAL’s Youth Arts-and-Education
Program, he said ‘I will contribute by participating.’” Loeb, a versatile guitarist, composer and producer, began his career in 1988 with his debut album, My Shining Hour on the Japanese record label Pony Canyon. He released subsequent albums on DMP Digital Music Products until receiving commercial success with Shanachie Records on The Music Inside. The title song from the album held the number one position on the jazz charts for six weeks. Later, Loeb produced Moon, the Stars & the Setting Sun (1998), Listen (1999) and In a Heartbeat (2001) and All There Is (2002). “During Mr. Loeb’s time slot on Sunday, Sept. 3, we’ll take a moment to acknowledge his music contribution and the spiritual power of his presence,” Mr. King said. “He was a great musician and artists who showed a great diversity in his approach to smooth jazz. He appealed to a cross-generation audience.” For more information about the festival, visit www.tbaalriverfrontjazzfestival.org or call TBAAL Box office at 214.743.2400 or 800.745.3000. Dear Alma,
Now that my feet are firmly planted and I’m making a good salary, I would like for him to go legit, but he’s not having it. He says the money’s too good. How can I get him to see, we can leave that life and do well and have a good life? Signed, Down for My Man
leading to half-baked shenanigans won’t let you stand up on a slippery slope. You have to decide which path is best for you right now, today and tomorrow, not yesterday, six months ago or the year before. Honestly girl, if your Mr. Do Right is doing wrong and you know it and support it, you’re Mrs. Do Wrong your dang self. Don’t start trippin’ now that you have a degree. Who you think you’re fooling? You’ve been in this from the jump. Your condo won’t keep you out of jail. Your degree won’t prevent you from serving time. You can’t dissect, analyze and redirect this negative into a positive now, because you’re getting an authentic paycheck. Get yourself out of this mess, before it’s too late. When it all comes crumbling down, and it will, you’ll be on your way to lock down, for love’s sake. Here’s my question to you: Is it worth it? Alma

I can’t give you all the details, but let’s just say my boyfriend is doing something that makes a lot of money, but it’s illegal. If he gets caught, “we” could go to jail. I love him and I’ve always supported him. He was there for me when I didn’t have anyone and helped me financially complete my degree and purchase my condo. I don’t want to leave him now that I’m gainfully employed, but I do worry about him getting caught. Sometimes I feel like I’m living a double life.
