I Messenger SONIA SANCHEZ & HAKI MADHUBUTI TO RECEIVE GRIGGS AWARD

JULY 28, 2017

Literary icons Sonia Sanchez and Haki Madhubuti will receive the Sutton E. Griggs Lifetime Achievement Award in Literature on Friday, August 25, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the kick-off of the 14th Tulisoma: South Dallas Book Fair. Sonia Sanchez formed a writers’ workshop in Greenwich Village, attended by poets Amiri Baraka, Haki R. Madhubuti, and Larry Neal. With Madhubuti, Nikki Giovanni, and Etheridge Knight, she formed the “Broadside Quartet” of young poets, promoted by Dudley Randall. She married and divorced Albert Sanchez, a Puerto Rican immigrant whose surname she has used when writing, and the poet Etheridge Knight, with whom she had three children. During the early 1960s she began to focus more on her Black heritage from a separatist point of view. Sanchez was a pioneer in developing black studies courses at what is now San Francisco State University, where she was an instructor from 1968 to 1969. In 1971 she joined the Nation of Islam, but by 1976 she had left the Nation, largely because of its repression of women. Sanchez is the author of more than a dozen books of poetry, including Shake Loose My Skin: New and Selected Poems (Beacon Press, 1999); Like the Singing Coming Off the Drums: Love Poems (1998); Does your house have lions? (1995), which was nominated for both the NAACP Image and National Book Critics Circle Award; Wounded in the House of a Friend (1995); Under a Soprano Sky (1987); Homegirls & Handgrenades (1984), which won an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation; I’ve Been a Woman: New and Selected Poems (1978); A Blues Book for Blue Black Magical Women (1973); Love Poems (1973); Liberation Poem (1970); We a BaddDDD People (1970); and Homecoming (1969). Her published plays are Black Cats Back and Uneasy Landings (1995), I’m Black When I’m Singing, I’m Blue When I Ain’t (1982), Malcolm Man/Don’t Live Here No Mo’ (1979), Uh Huh: But How Do It Free Us? (1974), Dirty Hearts ‘72 (1973), The Bronx Is Next (1970), and Sister Son/ji (1969). Her books for children include A Sound Investment and Other Stories (1979), The Adventures of Fat Head, Small Head, and Square Head (1973), and It’s a New Day: Poems

for Young Brothas and Sistuhs (1971). She has also edited two anthologies: We Be Word Sorcerers: Twenty-five Stories by Black Americans (1973) and Three Hundred Sixty Degrees of Blackness Comin’’at You (1971). Sanchez has received many honors including: the Community Service Award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, the Lucretia Mott Award, the Outstanding Arts Award from the Pennsylvania Coalition of 100 Black Women, the Peace and Freedom Award from Women International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Humanities, a National Endowment for the Arts Award, and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts. She has lectured at more than 500 universities and colleges in the United States and had traveled extensively, reading her poetry in Africa, Cuba, England, the Caribbean, Australia, Nicaragua, the People’s Republic of China, Norway, and Canada. She was the first Presidential Fellow at Temple University, where she began teaching in 1977, and held the Laura Carnell Chair in English there until her retirement in 1999. Sanchez is a recent recipient (2001) of the Robert Frost medal in poetry, one of the highest honors awarded to a nationally recognized poet. One of the most important writers of the Black Arts Movement; Sanchez is the author of sixteen books and lives in Philadelphia. Haki R. Madhubuti over the years has published 28 books (some under his former name, “Don L. Lee”) and is one of the world’s best-selling authors of poetry and non-fiction, with books in print in excess of 3 million. His Black Men: Obsolete, Single, Dangerous?: The African American Family in Transition (1990) has sold over 1,000,000 copies. His latest books are Claiming Earth: Race, Rage, Rape, Redemption (1994), GroundWork: New and Selected Poems 1966-1996 (1996), and HeartLove: Wedding and Love Poems (1998). Madhubuti has also co-edited two volumes of literary works from “Gallery 37”, releasing The Spirit (1998), and Describe the Moment (2000). His poetry and essays were published in over 30 anthologies from 1997 to 2001. He also wrote Tough Notes: A Healing Call For Creating Exceptional Black Men (2002).

Besides co-founding a publishing company, Madhubuti is the co-founder of the Institute of Positive Education/New Concept Development Center (established in 1969), and co-founder of the Betty Shabazz International Charter School (established 1998) in Chicago, Illinois. He is also a founder and board member of the National Association of Black Book Publishers, a founder and chairman of the board of The International Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent, and founder and director of the National Black Writers Retreat. Prior to stepping down from his position, Madhubuti held the position of Distinguished University Professor, co-founder and director emeritus of the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing and director of the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program at Chicago State University. Madhubuti’s latest book, Yellow Black, is an autobiographical novel detailing the first 21 years of his life. In December 1967, Haki R. Madhubuti met with Carolyn Rodgers and Johari Amini in the basement of a South Side apartment to found Third World Press, an outlet for African-American literature. By 2007, the company continued, 40 years later, to thrive in a multimillion-dollar facility. Over the years, this press would publish works for Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gwendolyn Brooks, as well as Sonia Sanchez, Sterling Plumpp and Pearl Cleage. Over the course of his career Sutton Griggs wrote more than a dozen books, including five novels, five social tracts, his autobiography, a short biography of John L. Webb, and The Kingdom Builder’s Manual (1924), a booklet of biblical quotations. At his expense he published and distributed these works, which were generally written for “the aspiring classes of the black south.” Although virtually unknown among whites, his writings were generally read by African Americans. Griggs wrote in a very direct style that was somewhat stiff and formal. He was one of the few Southern members of the Niagra movement, a civil rights group which had an outspoken platform based on Please see, TULISOMA, page 16

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Helps Women Manage Menopause One Patient says she felt suicidal, psychotic before treatment Special to I Messenger

MANSFIELD, Texas – It seemed like an odd solution for an evangelical Christian minister. Swallow a handful of barbiturates and if that didn’t work, drive your vehicle into oncoming traffic. The goal was to commit suicide. Cathy, who asked not to use her last name for privacy, was clearly at a crossroads. She was in physical and mental turmoil and neither the counseling nor hormone medication was easing her suffering. “I knew that I had been in premenopausal stage for quite some time. I had gone to a primary care specialists who gave me a generic patch. I never could get the thing to stay on,” said Cathy, who was 52 at the time. “In 2009, my youngest and only sister was killed in a car wreck. I couldn’t sleep; I did not know what was going on. I thought it was grief.” Cathy, who is married with a blended family that includes four adult children and grandchildren, said she expected to find solace in her spiritual life. When that was unsuccessful, she tried three different counselors and hormone patch therapy. “I thought I was supposed to be praying. It was so hard, even now, I am still emotional,” she said. “I am in ministry, and I had this impression that I was supposed to look a certain way and act a certain way. But inside it was killing me. I made one attempt to commit suicide and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.” With what seemed like no relief in sight, she called the medical director of Hormone Harmony – Living A Balanced Life Center. The wellness center is now open by appointment only, Monday-Friday at 550 Walnut Creek Drive, Suite 110, Mansfield, Texas, 76063.

Dr. Jill Waggoner Dr. Jill Waggoner, Hormone Harmony Medical Director, said she opened the center when she realized many of the patients she cares for in her family medicine practice were experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance. “Some people start to experience symptoms of hormone imbalance as early as their late 30’s. This is important because people think of hormone imbalance only in persons who are in there 50’s and 60’s,” said Dr. Waggoner, author of three books on wellness. “The truth is that this is not always the reality. It is important for a patient to start therapy as soon as possible, so that they can maintain optimal health for as long as possible.” Estrogen levels in women fluctuate during their menstrual cycles and dip dramatically after menopause, Dr. Waggoner said. Hormone therapy restores estrogen and or progesterone levels to ease the most common complaints and symptoms. At Hormone Harmony, physicians take the time to do a private consultation before conducting a comprehensive evaluation using state-of-the-art analysis of lab results for blood, saliva or urine. The customized treatment is prepared at a compounding pharmacy; and includes treatment with natural, bio-identical creams, lotions and pellets, which are placed under the skin for three months at a time. The medicine is chemically identical to

the compounds that occur naturally in the body. The center serves men and women in a gender-neutral, intimate environment. The modern décor is airy and flooded with bright oranges, reds and cushy seats, reminiscent of someone’s living room rather than a medical facility. “It became more, and more apparent that fixing the underlying hormone issues could prevent the patient from being prescribed other medications such as antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications. This treats the cause of the symptoms and not just the symptoms,” said Dr. Waggoner. Cathy, who is also a corporate trainer, said her pre-menopausal and post-menopausal symptoms included depression, insomnia, lack of focus, irritability, weight gain and personal dryness. Her husband noticed the erratic mood swings. “If it was a good day, it was a good day, if it was a bad day I would isolate myself. You are pretending and becoming more, and more withdrawn. I am a people person and I knew it wasn’t healthy, but I couldn’t do anything about those episodes." “I was planning to drive into traffic the day I called Hormone Harmony. I was almost psychotic.” Now, at 60 years old, Cathy was prescribed bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. She said her life is balanced, not perfect. The depression and suicidal thoughts are gone. She returned to school to study for a Doctorate in Ministry. She had previously earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and two Master’s Degrees, Science Education and Arts in Human Relations and Business. To top it off, the 13 extra pounds she gained melted away. “Hormone Harmony’s approach gave me my life back,” said Cathy.

The weekly podcast of IBA, the only nationally broadcast black-oriented public affairs radio program, is one of KUT’s most popular podcasts. Hanson’s love of radio started in his hometown, Detroit, as a teenager. He began as a music programmer and youth reporter for the student station in his school. Upon his high school graduation, he traveled to Austin, Texas, to attend Huston-Tillotson College, and landed a DJ slot at a small, low wattage station in nearby Lockhart where he offered a popular nightly program of jazz and soul music. Eventually he

was hired by KUT radio in 1974 where his first assignment was to produce a nightly program called “Soul on FM” which became an immediate success and ultimately earned him recognition as “Best DJ in Texas” by Texas Monthly magazine in 1976. In 1977, Hanson received a Minority Training Grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which he used to learn the ropes for setting up a public affairs program for KUT. Upon his return from the CPB workshops, Hanson turned his attention to improving and increasing information about the black community, which was not effectively reaching the local media outlets. He soon created Access, a weekly, live, phone-in program on KUT, which allowed experts in various fields and endeavors to address the public about their intended impact on the Austin community. From there, Hanson was promoted to the producer of In Black America after its previous host left the city in 1980. A former board member of the National Association of Black Journalists, Hanson has served many roles at KUT, including being the station’s interim GM on two occasions. He retired from KUT in 2011 but has continued to work on IBA and host the Old School Dance Party on sister station KUTX 98.9 Friday afternoons from 4-7 p.m. Hanson is married to the former Latischa M. Merritt; he has two children, Kacey and Michael. The Texas Radio Hall of Fame is dedicated to the recognition of broadcasting greats in the Lone Star State. This year’s induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 4 at Noon at the Texas Broadcasting Museum of Broadcasting and Communications located at 416 E. Main Street, Kilgore, TX 75663. QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

Hey Jim, it’s your Brother John and I am not in any shape, form or figment of the imagination supported by or related to Orenthal James Simpson. Among the unfortunate circumstances that found me visiting a friend in the emergency room was, being simultaneously summoned to read the latest article of the Dallas Observer. And while I never read your publication or the Snooze as a general rule, I could not help but comment on your “story.” So much has changed since the days when you were at the Dallas Times Herald. Back in the days when you and I were brothers in the revolution; but then again so few things have changed. And ultimately this type of one-sided, tunnel-vision, soft-attack journalism that sells papers, continues. Generally I have always loved the way a “Schutze” piece can be appreciated more for its inference than investigation. It’s what you don’t say that makes me ponder. You play on words, captivate the audience and apparently that still makes you a staple. You have moved from the mastery of the “Accommodation” to the mediocrity of assimilation. Obviously,

I’m Not OJ

there is no solid market for real artistry these days. Let me be forthright in taking this and every opportunity to thank and pay homage to the outstanding league of lawyers that defended me and Ms. Fain. Dallas County and probably the State of Texas have never seen the coagulation of such a comprehensive vein of legal talent. And while you and most others are astounded by their handiwork, our weekly that turned to daily meetings over the last five years portended this or a similar outcome. All of the attorneys in this case were diligent, dutiful, and determined to get to the bottom of the facts…When they got to the bottom…the facts startled them. There was no there, there! They arrived to find the same lack of evidence that the attorneys for the infamous Scottsboro Boys, Reuben “Hurricane” Carter, The Central Park Five, my former assistant, Joyce Ann Brown and the more than 20 men exonerated in Dallas County were greeted to. In each case the missing component was evidence. Even in America, it helps when you have defendants who are credible, credentialed, and courageous enough to stand before a judge and jury. We didn’t cop any pleas…we did not call for anarchy against the system; we just stood on our faith. We stayed “Prayed up so we wouldn’t be Preyed

on!” Well that’s all Jim, and let me apologize. Part of the sentiments in this letter was meant for a wannabee investigative reporter; a piece of Shipp named Brett over at Channel Eight, who is about as useless as carburetor on a Tesla. Finally, and what I really want to convey to you is that I thank God for the attorneys that spent six years crafting our defense, the scores of volunteer law students who helped to dismantle some 7 million pages of evidence and a judge who was fair and impartial. They sacrificed more in time and treasure than we could ever repay.

Ask Alma:

Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and Twitter @almaaskalma.

Dear Alma, I can’t give you all the details, but let’s just say my boyfriend is doing something that makes a lot of money, but it’s illegal. If he gets caught, “we” could go to jail. I love him and I’ve always supported him. He was there for me when I didn’t have anyone and helped me financially complete my degree and purchase my condo. I don’t want to leave him now that I’m gainfully employed, but I do worry about him getting caught. Sometimes I feel like I’m living a double life. Now

12

that my feet are firmly planted and I’m making a good salary, I would like for him to go legit, but he’s not having it. He says the money’s too good. How can I get him to see, we can leave that life and do well and have a good life? Signed, Down for My Man Dear Down for My Man, Some people will sell their soul for a diamond-crusted, fried bologna sandwich, while others will work hard, all day long at doing what’s right. The road to righteousness is long, undoubtedly unfair and ruthlessly rough. The sidewalk leading to half-baked shenanigans won’t let you stand up on a slippery slope. You have to decide which path is best for you right now, today and tomorrow, not yester-

day, six months ago or the year before. Honestly girl, if your Mr. Do Right is doing wrong and you know it and support it, you’re Mrs. Do Wrong your dang self. Don’t start trippin’ now that you have a degree. Who you think you’re fooling? You’ve been in this from the jump. Your condo won’t keep you out of jail. Your degree won’t prevent you from serving time. You can’t dissect, analyze and redirect this negative into a positive now, because you’re getting an authentic paycheck. Get yourself out of this mess, before it’s too late. When it all comes crumbling down, and it will, you’ll be on your way to lock down, for love’s sake. Here’s my question to you: Is it worth it? Spiritually Speaking…

I Messenger

Do you love you? Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

The road to spiritual salvation is sometimes so obvious, so apparent that we just miss it. Like most of Jesus’ message, it doesn’t seem possible that by simply changing ones’ outlook, the Kingdom of Heaven is yours. “Teacher, which is greatest commandment of the law?” Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is just like it; “Love your neighbor as yourself. All the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40. It is not always through guile and deceit that the devil works his evil. He can accomplish his goals if he can convince you that what is very important is of little matter and no consequence. This love thing is pretty well documented throughout the Bible and Christ certainly clarifies its importance in the above passage. Remember this is the Son of God talking. The single most important thing I can do to abide in God’s will is to possess love in my heart for God and my fellow man. Is that it? Yeah. That’s it! If that’s as close to a guarantee as we can get, why are many of us hell bent on doing the things that will insure our place at the table in Hell’s Kitchen?

I personally think the concept of loving God is pretty easy to comprehend. Most of us, dare I say, are arguably trying to accomplish this in one way or another. It’s the loving your neighbor as yourself that’s causing the problem. The devil is having a field day with this one. Count how many people you can’t

The devil has us so confused and dumbfounded on this issue that we can’t see that the hatred we harbor for others, the contempt we feel for people we don’t even know, masks an underlying reality that won’t allow us to love our neighbor. stand at this very moment. Take your shoes off and add to your list those people, who if they died tomorrow, you would be among those who would say ‘good riddance.’ The devil has us so confused and dumbfounded on this issue that we can’t see that the hatred we harbor for others, the contempt we feel for people we don’t even know, masks an underlying reality that won’t allow us to love our neighbor. In actuality, we hate ourselves. You see the devil has tricked us into hating the mirror image of who we really are. Deep down inside we hate in others that which

we might become, because we really don’t like what we have become. Hello, somebody! The devil knows man is not perfect, so he entices us into hating the imperfection of others; their flaws and faults, their weaknesses and shortcomings. All the while, being imperfect ourselves. Isn’t it interesting that most people, who claim being saved, tell you they first had to realize that God through Jesus’ sacrifice loved them warts and all? The stories come from former drug addicts, adulterers, petty gossipers, murderers and greedy self-absorbed takers in life, who wished they knew how to have a healthy respectful loving relationship with another human being. One by one, they, we, line up and confess that once we accepted that God indeed loves us, then and only then, are we able to love ourselves and subsequently love others just like they are; all imperfect, all flawed children of God, all welcomed at his eternal table. At this point, one sees God in every man, every woman and every child, because once you accept that God resides in your own sinful soul, you can see God in others. God knew you before you knew you and he loved you anyway in spite of what He knew you were going to do or become. As incredible as that sounds, it’s true. It’s called love. God’s point is so simple. If He’s got it for you, the least you can do is have it for others. Step back, Satan. I love me and I ain’t got nothing, but love for you too. May God bless and keep you always.

Tulisoma, continued from page 3 the issue of racial and social justice and which eventually evolved into the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Although he has often been characterized as a black nationalist based on the plot of his first novel, this may be an overgeneralization since his subsequent novels do not contain this theme. In Imperium in Imperio Griggs chronicles the social and political injustice to which blacks are subjected. He describes the meeting of the Imperium in Imperio, a secret political organization in Waco, Texas, composed of blacks who are frustrated with the social and political status of blacks in America. In the novel the leader of the organization argues for the violent takeover of the state of Texas. Neither this work nor any subsequent novel by Griggs received widespread distribution. Although succeeding Griggs novels, Overshadowed (1901), Unfettered (1902),

16

The Hindered Hand (1905), and Pointing the Way (1908), are deemed “less militant” by some scholars, they received poor circulation. One reason may be that many of Griggs’s philosophies on race relations were in direct conflict with the philosophies espoused by Booker T. Washington and other popular black leaders of the day. Griggs’s views on improving the status of blacks were influenced by several contemporary social theorists, including Charles Darwin, Herbert Spencer, and Benjamin Kidd. Griggs felt that society evolved from lower to higher forms by adopting “Christian virtues.” In his later view blacks needed only to practice Christian virtues (love, honesty, patience, etc.) in order to improve their socioeconomic status. Members and organizations of the black community would have to work together in order to instill these traits in the race. Griggs outlined these views in the social tracts that he

wrote and in lectures he made in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Texas. Tulisoma, Swahili for “we read”, is a community-based festival promoting literacy and the art in the South Dallas/Fair Park area. Founded in 2003, by the late Leo V. Chaney, Jr., and Dr. Harry Robinson, Jr. President and CEO of the African American Museum, the goal of Tulisoma is to create a dynamic event tailored to engage local families, avid readers, aspiring writers and visitors to the city. The African American Museum serves as the lead partner along with the Dallas Public Library and many community supporters and sponsors to continue the tradition of celebrating reading and the importance of literacy.
