I Messenger this was the formula for when preparation meets opportunity. Were there some reservations on my part? Not really. Here was an opportunity to put my passion and skills to work. Also, I didn’t believe that newspapers were a dying breed. Instead I believed that here was an opportunity to be more of a voice for the voiceless and to have a serious impact on the coverage and narratives presented. This coverage is definitely needed today as we navigate through the “fake news” narratives. I also wanted an opportunity to build a multi-media organization where collaborations could increase the number of beneficiaries of solid, ethical journalism. Here was a chance to provide informative, enlightening, inspiring and yes, entertaining news and commentary. As I set about working and assembling award-winning journalists, sales professionals, graphics designers, web gurus, financial and legal strategists, hard-hitting columnists, interns, honest distributors and others; my team has continued to grow and increase public awareness. I also worked feverishly to secure clients, ie. Advertisers and subscribers who would support quality journalism. Enter Mollie Belt, Publisher of the Dallas Examiner. Mrs. Belt

immediately offered her support and encouraged my participation in two organizations I was very familiar with, the National Newspapers Publishers Association and the Texas Publishers Association (TPA). Although some might consider us to be competitors, Mrs. Belt has been one of my strongest supporters. She wrote letters of recommendation and spoke in my behalf as I sought membership in these prestigious organizations. As a long-time member and currently the National Secretary of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) I have numerous connections around the world. I value those memberships and am committed to ensuring that these relationships are mutually beneficial. What Mrs. Belt has shown by her actions, as well as those actions of others like her; that where there is unity, there is strength and you benefit from lifting as you climb. Over the years, I have learned that you don’t have to be the only one in the game and you can help others thrive and grow. Emma Rodgers and Ashira Toshiwe are also models for the lifting as you climb mantra. As the owners of Black Images Book Bazaar, the two had no problem introducing their customers to the book stores in the

area and across the country. With other member publishers, like my FAMU classmate Bobby Henry of the Westside Gazette, Shirley Gray of the Dallas Post Tribune, Denise Rolark Barnes of the Washington Informer, Janis Ware and Jim Washington of the Atlanta Voice; and NNPA leadership from President Dr. Ben Chavis who I used to interview on KKDA-AM back in the day, and Chairman Dorothy Leavell; I am looking forward to a great ride. After all, we’re all soldiers without swords and together, with the other more than 200 publications, we are going to continue telling those stories. Stick with us. We’re here for you. A wake-up call for Democrats

I’ve never met Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year old New York activist, but I am surely looking forward to it. This giant-slayer of an organizer (she worked for Senator Bernie Sanders during the 2016 campaign) was out-spent, but certainly not out-worked, by her opponent, Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY). Crowley had served in Congress for ten terms and was the fourth-highest ranking Democrat in Congress, one who had openly coveted Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi’s position as Minority Leader in Congress. He spent $1.5 million in his first primary race since 2004, while Ocasio-Cortez spent just a fraction of that. Co n gre s s wo m a n - e l e c t Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (wow! It feels good to type that, and she is a shoo-in because the district is mostly Democratic) won because, despite fewer funds and less name recognition, she had a ground game that did not quit. The day after her election, she told CNN that her team “knocked on doors that had never been knocked on, reaching voters who had been dismissed.” Lacking money for the television ads Crowley spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on, Ocasio-Cortez used social media to get the word about her candidacy out. She didn’t mind being sharply critical of Crowley, highlighting his disconnection from the New York district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens, and focusing on the demographic mismatch between a 50 plus white man representing a district that is majority minority. sio-Cortez’s hard work paid off – she had more than 57 percent of the vote, hardly a nail-biter. In some ways, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez sounds something like Stacey Abrams, the Democratic powerhouse who made history when she became the first-African American woman to win a primary party nomination for governor and in the South, at that. When Abrams first declared her candidacy she was met with skepticism, and especially from some in the Democratic Party establishment. But she had been registering some of the voters that the party had ignored, and if she can get about 100,000 more registered and voting, she has an excellent chance of being elected governor. Unfortunately, the national Democratic Party and some state parties have done a poor job of dealing with the nation’s shifting demographics, and with the demand from younger, browner, and more focused voters to dispense with business as usual. In Washington State, for example, Tirzah Idahosa is a candidate for the 30th Senate District. The union member, volunteer lobbyist, former correctional officer and foster parent is a founder of Democrats for Diversity and In-

clusion and a precinct captain. In a primary race with another Democrat, she tells me that she has been advised to “wait her turn” or to run for something “lesser” like the school board. Don’t these mainstream Democrats get that advising folks to “wait their turn” is what is turning so many away from the polls? President Barack Obama didn’t wait his turn when he was advised to, and he beat Hilary Clinton soundly and out of turn! Mainstream Democrats didn’t get the Bernie memo, but Senator Bernie Sanders had a good night on Tuesday, June 25. Not only did he have the Ocasio-Cortez victory to savor, but another of his acolytes, former NAACP President Ben Jealous, won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Maryland. His opponent, Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, was in many ways both the superior candidate and the one better poised to beat Republican governor Larry Hogan. But Jealous had the Bernie machine and the enthusiasm of younger people who saw Baker as “business as usual.” In Boston, City Councilor Ayanna Pressley has challenged incumbent Representative Mike Capuano (D-Ma) for his congressional seat. Capuano has used the power of his incumbency to

persuade members of the Congressional Black Caucus, including civil rights icon, Congressman John Lewis, to support him, a colleague, instead of Councilor Pressley. If some of the CBC representatives spent time with Ayanna Pressley, they’d like her and wish they had someone with her passion as a colleague. But Capuano thinks his seniority (he has only been in office 5 years) should be persuasive and dismissed Pressley’s candidacy by telling the Boston Globe “if we decide to send junior people, good luck.” His rank will yield his a key subcommittee chairmanship in Congress if Democrats can take the House back. Or, if Democrats can win the house, it will put Pressley in line to be a committee chair just a few years from now. Capuano forgets that demographics have shifted in his Congressional district, which is now majority-minority. He also ignores that fact that not so long ago he, too, was a junior person in Congress. Younger, more progressive Democrats like Ocasio-Cortez and Pressley aren’t trying to “wait their turn,” they are trying to turn our country around. The Democratic Party ought to look at these candidacies as a second wake-up call. The first happened when Senator Bernie Sanders nearly beat Senator Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination and lit a fire among young change agents that won’t be contained by the power of incumbency or the condescending rhetoric that folks should “wait their turn.”

Sicario: Day of the Soldado

Sicario: Day of the Soldado is a new chapter for the 2015 movie Sicario. In the original movie Benecio Del Toro's character, Alejando, was a lawyer whose family was killed by the Mexican drug cartel. In this version he's a mercenary working for the C.I.A. to go after the Mexican drug lords through any means necessary. He helps to execute a plan to kidnap the daughter of one of the drug lords, who we never see in the movie, to create a war between rival drug lords in Mexico. The plan is devised by the C.I.A. as a way to have the cartels do their dirty work. Josh Brolin is Matt Grarver, who's under covert orders from the Secretary of State, played by Matthew Modine, to have the drug lords in Mexico at war with each other as a way to try to slow down the tide, not of just drugs but, of human trafficking across the Texas Mexi-

co border; where terrorists are being smuggled into the United States. Brolin and Del Toro are great in their respective roles. They are two characters who can't be defined as "good guys" or "bad guys." They are simply on a mission and the lines between good and bad are completely erased. These are two bad hombres.

The story is very relevant today with the "war on the border" edict that has been issued by our current administration, but the story is complete fiction (to my knowledge) although it looks like something ripped from today's headlines. "Sicario" in Spanish means "assassin" and "soldado" means "soldier", so the movie's title refers to the young men who are being trained by the cartels to be an army of assassins. It's a very dark movie and there's enough violent gun play to fill two movies. Almost every part of the movie is filled with violence but it is well acted by the characters in the movie. Sicario: Day of the Soldado is rated "R" for violence and has a run time of 2 hours and 2 minutes. It's a really good "action/ adventure" movie and on my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate it a LARGE.

The Hued, Helpless, Huddled! BY VINCENT L. HALL

“It is a very rare human who does not victimize the helpless.” – James Baldwin No one can gauge the earnest sentiments or intent of Richard Henry Lee when he introduced the Lee Resolution. The Statesman from the Virginia Commonwealth made the motion in the Second Continental Congress, calling for the colonies’ independence from Great Britain. On June 7, 1776, Lee, who hailed from a family full of notable public servants rendered a questionable proposition: “Resolved: that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain is, and ought to be totally dissolved.” Had this motion been initiated by any other in the Congress, it may not have passed. Richard Henry Lee hailed from a family of privilege and means. He returned from Great Britain after completing his education in 1752. Lee could never be considered a “no name.” Lee’s Resolution bridged the passage of America’s most important steps from tyranny and toward total freedom. The Declaration of Independence would suggest that because God made this earth all Americans should be afforded the “quiet enjoyment” of personhood and property. One hundred and eighty years later, James Baldwin, whose lineage was neither noble nor

worthy of particular mention, had a similar reckoning. The revelation shows up in a 1956 poem by Baldwin; “No Name in the Street.” Baldwin was living in Paris; matriculating in another episode of his education. When he looked at the condition of his native peoples, he wrote these lines. “Facing us, on every newspaper kiosk

For Baldwin, it was the White Citizens’ Council of Charlotte, North Carolina. “Citizens’ Councils” operated as the dignified ancillary and arm of the deleterious Ku Klux Klan. Charlotte was just one American outpost. Lee had his day and so did Baldwin. The future declarations of independence rest with us! Whether you are of humble beginnings or noteworthy birth, the time for protest and revolt has come. The basis of our duty to act on our beliefs is revealed in the opening paragraph of our national “Holy Writ’; The Declaration of Independence. “When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.” Lee and Baldwin knew when to separate and when to devise seminal social compacts. So must we. We will “Make America Great Again” for those who crave homogeny and supremacy. Or we will make A New America Great by coarsening our resolve to thrive without making victims of the hued, the helpless, and the huddled masses who seek refuge in us. Heritage Giving Fund at Dallas Women's Foundation hosted an intriguing panel discussion featuring remarks from Representative Helen Giddings, Zenetta Drew of the Dallas Black Dance Theatre, and Greer L. Christian of Wells Fargo, as well as moderator Dr. Halima Leak Francis. The topic was "Giving Back: Our Legacy of Leadership in Philanthropy," which focused on the historical contributions black women have made to North Texas philanthropy. HERitage Giving Fund is one of the giving circles at the Dallas Women's Foundation - others include The Village Giving Circle and the Orchid Giving Circle. My step-son Ask ALMA Dear Alma, My best friend and college roommate grew up without her mother. She was raised by her father and they had a very close relationship. She shared with me that her mother left because of some unfortunate circumstances but has never gone into detail. I do know that her mother did not play a role in her life. She did not pick her up for visits or spend any time with her. It was like she just vanished. Her father just recently died, and she found out that he had two insurance policies and she called the insurance company to get the information. When she did, she was told the beneficiary was her mother. After 20 years, they never divorced, so her mother was entitled to the money. I told her she should sue her and get the money from her dad’s insurance. If she couldn’t take care of her daughter, she doesn’t deserve that money. My friend was left everything else, his car and his house. The house is in need of repairs and if she could get that money from her mother she would be able to take care of some things. She will probably end up selling the house and she is very upset about that. I told her she should sue and confront her mother. What do you think Alma, do you think she’ll win her case? Mama Drama

Dear Mama Drama, What do I think? I’m so glad you asked. That leads me to believe there’s some room here for us to agree and agree to disagree. I agree she should try to reconnect with her mother. I disagree on the approach. Confronting someone is such an agitated act; searching for a non-confrontational conversation is more of what I have in mind. I’m sorry your friend was unable to have her mother in her life when she was growing up. There’s no excuse for that. But you and I both know there are three sides to every story –his side, her side and the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts, and the truth of the matter is, her dad left the money to his wife and everything else to his daughter. There’s no need for a lawsuit. One could ask, does she deserve it? Well, her husband thought she did and that’s all that matters. This is a very tough time for your friend. It’s one of the toughest she’ll experience in her life. She is in need of a sacred place. Losing a parent has lasting effects and can leave you empty and broken for years to come. The best thing you can do for her is apply your comments to the positive side of this situation. Reassure her of the love her father had for her and remind her, even in the most difficult of times, he didn’t forget her mother. She might be hurt and totally disagree, but there’s no mistake that it’s admirable on the part of her father. Parents have confidential conversa-

tions that they never share with their children, and that sounds like what happened here.Maybe her parents agreed her mother would leave the relationship for whatever reason and it has gone unresolved all this time. If there were dozens of days of disrespect, then daddy, I’m sure, would have certainly made a change to his insurance policy. He didn’t. Choosing a beneficiary is not a small feat. When he did so, he didn’t wish, wonder or assume. He made a conscious decision and he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation. Like Clover said to Grover, “this issue is over.” There’s nothing your friend should do about it, but respect it and move on. She should also use her father’s last life gesture to reach out to her mother. You never know what that discussion may bring. Both are feeding unanswered questions and allowing the weeds of misunderstanding to grow. It’s time for healing. She can’t have another conversation with her father, but she can with her mother. Encourage her to extend a non-judgmental hand of forgiveness to her mother and if it’s not reciprocated, so be it. She can live a full life knowing she did all that she could to reconcile with her mother. Don’t encourage her to take her mom to court; that’s ugly and it don’t look good on you. Be a good friend who listens and consoles. As her best friend, it’s your job to lift her soul, not damage it. Alma
