White Supremacist jailed after attack
By Freddie Allen (Managing Editor, NNPA Newswire)
James Alex Fields Jr., a 20 year-old from Ohio, who drove his dark gray Dodge Challenger into a crowd of people protesting a White nationalist march in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday, August 12 showed a deep interest in Nazism and Adolph Hitler in high school. Fields is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder, among other charges. ABC News reported that Derek Weimer, Fields’ former world history teacher at Randall K. Cooper High School in Union, Kentucky, said that Fields was “fairly quiet,”“smart,” and also an open admirer of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. According to ABC News, “Some of Fields’ classmates at the school recalled a trip to Europe a group of students took after graduation in 2015, when they visited the Dachau concentration camp. Two of the students on the trip said when they arrived at the concentration camp, Fields said, ‘This is where the magic happened.’” Last weekend, White nationalists descended on the college town to protest the removal of a statute of Robert E. Lee, the infamous general of the Confederacy. Fields’ mother, Samantha Bloom, told the Associated Press, that she thought her son was attending a political rally, “that had something to do with Trump” and that she tried to stay out of her son’s political views. Media reports have described Heather Heyer, the lone fatality in Saturday’s tragedy, as a 32 year-old paralegal from Greene County, Va., and a supporter of Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.). Heyer was in Charlottesville to protest against the White nationalist rally in Charlottesville. Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer called Hey-

er’s killing and the injury of others a “terrorist attack with a car used as a weapon.” In a statement about the violence and the White nationalist march in Charlottesville, Neera Tanden, the president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, said that events over the weekend are another stark and disturbing reminder that violent extremism continues to exist in our neighborhoods and communities. In a statement from his New Jersey golf club, President Donald Trump said that he condemned the “egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides.” Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke said that the White nationalists’ protest represented a turning point for this country. ”We are determined to take this country back. We’re gonna fulfill the promises of Donald Trump. That’s what we believed in,” Duke said in a video posted to Twitter. Facing sharp criticism for the president’s initial response to the tragedy, the White House issued a follow-up statement that included a stronger rebuke of “White supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan,
Neo-Nazis and all extremist groups.” Tanden said that throughout the campaign and in his brief presidency, Trump has had many opportunities to not just fully distance his administration from those allied with Nazi sympathizers and the KKK but also to denounce them. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) tweeted that the Black Press condemned the racial hatred and violence in Charlottesville. “Love presupposes justice, equality, freedom, and empowerment. Hate renders only more hatred,” Chavis tweeted. Echoing Tanden’s concerns about the president’s dithering remarks about the White nationalist movement, Congressman Cedric Richmond, (D-La.) said that since the campaign, President Trump has encouraged and emboldened the type of racism and violence that occurred in Charlottesville. “This is a president after all who has two White supremacists working for him in the White House—Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller,” said Richmond. “For these reasons, we weren’t surprised President Trump couldn’t bring himself to say the words ‘White supremacy,’ ‘White supremacists,’ and ‘domestic terrorism’ when he addressed the nation’ on Saturday. He instead chose to use racially coded dog whistles like ‘law and order’ and false equivalencies like ‘many sides.’ Richmond continued: “Where is Attorney General Sessions? Instead of suppressing votes and dismantling affirmative action, he should be working with the Department of Homeland Security to investigate today’s crimes.” Richmond noted that the CBC urged Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security to investigate this sort of domestic terrorism, months ago. “As 49 members who represent and are part of a community who has for centuries been victimized by White supremacists, we strongly condemn what happened in Charlottesville,” said Richmond in the statement. “We also condemn the Administration’s poor response to it.”

whether overt, covert, institutional, or otherwise speaks to the very core of existence of the NAACP and our continuing fight against the forces of evil and hate. We firmly understand that the only thing necessary for the continuance of this hate is for us to do nothing; therefore, we call for lawmakers to condemn this and all similar acts of white supremacy sponsored hate, and domestic terrorism. We ask that local elected leaders (city, county, and school board) call for the removal of these painful reminders on public property that have hindered our greatness as a society. Furthermore, we join in the National NAACP’s call for President Trump to denounce this act as an act of terrorism and condemn the repeated rhetoric which has helped to fuel this climate of discord and division. We remain steadfast in our advocacy and activism as we push forward in our fight for legislative changes, expansion of voting rights, and sound public policies that equally serve and protect all citizens within our community. At the August 1st General Membership meeting, the Dallas NAACP assembled a task force to address the removal of Confederate monuments, statues, and symbols that are housed on public property. Aubrey C. Hooper, President, Dallas NAACP and Assistant Secretary, NAACP National Board
“Horrifying expressions of white supremacy and Nazi sympathies sadly are nothing novel in the United States, even in the 21st Century. fer my condolences to the counter protester who lost their life after a car plowed into a crowd of peaceful protesters yesterday. Charlottesville is experiencing one of the largest groups of white nationalist rallies in a decade. We must search out the roots of this bigotry and eliminate it once and for all. Our country must rise above the systemic racism that permeates so many facets of our society. Calls for unity are not enough. We must demand a call to action. It is on each of us, from the President to every day citizens, to con-
demn racism when we see it. We must not waste another day doing nothing. We must not allow another tragedy to pass us by without self-reflection and action. Racism is our original sin and it is our eternal struggle. We must never grow complacent to finding its cure.” TX Representative Helen Giddings “I am deeply disturbed by President Trump’s unsatisfactory response to the incident in Charlottesville, VA. a leader with the hopes that he would unify and strengthen our nation. Instead, his most recent comments will only continue to divide us as a country. It is long overdue for the president to display the strong sense of leadership that is expected of an elected official, leader of the free world, and President of the United States. White nationalism has no place in our democratic society. President Trump should unequivocally denounce such extremism and frankly he has been reluctant to do so. “I have lived in this great
nation for all of my life and I have witnessed many things throughout my years. However, I never imagined a day when someone such as the President would defend and align himself with such hateful and evil rhetoric. Our country is better than this, and so are its people. There should be zero hesitation from this White House administration to denounce racial extremism and condemn the violence we have seen in Charlottesville.” Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

MALVEAUX: Affirmative Action for wealthy Immigrants, Not Students
The LAST WORD By Dr. Julianne Malveaux
In the same week that it was revealed that the Department of Injustice is spearheading attacks on affirmative action, our 45th President indicated his support for legislation that would drastically revive our nation’s immigration policy. Instead of providing immigration opportunities to the families of people who are legal residents of our country, the pending legislation would create a “merit based” system for immigration. According to legislation sponsored by Republican Senators Tom Cotton of Arkansas and David Perdue of Georgia, applicants for legal immigration earn points based on education, high-paying job offers, entrepreneurial ability (including the ability to invest in the US), high-achievement – Nobel Prize winners are welcome, and age (bring on the young). Presently, about a million people are granted green cards, but the Cotton-Perdue legislation would cut the number by half within a decade. And the “diversity lottery” that admits 50,000 people each year, would be eliminated. A significant number of African immigrants, among others, are admitted through the diversity lottery. The Cotton-Perdue legislation provides affirmative action for wealthy immigrants. If you have
10
a high-paying job offer, or money to invest, or entrepreneurial ability, you’ve got a better chance of getting in than if you are a highschool grad who would be sponsored by her sibling. Why is this affirmative action? Because affirmative action says that when all else is equal, you choose a preference for a certain group. In higher education, the preference – all else equal – is for those who have been historically excluded and systematically discriminated against. When affirmative action policies were
who irrationally oppose immigration, and feel that whites experience more discrimination than do African Americans. Their beliefs cannot be verified by economic data that indicate that African American people experience more unemployment, have lower incomes, less wealth and less education. Equally educated African Americans take twice as long to find new jobs as whites do. Beyond economic matter, basic quality of life issues (such as police violence) are harsher for African Americans
initially developed they were designed to favor African Americans and other underrepresented minorities. In practical terms, white women have often been the primary beneficiaries of affirmative action, especially in the workplace. 45 and his posse support preferences in immigration, but oppose them when it comes to higher education and employment. The Administration’s positions on both affirmative action and immigration are winks and nods to 45’s base, the nativist white people
than for whites If 45 and his crew can state their preferences for immigration policy, why can’t institutions of higher education state their preferences for admissions policy? The problem is that 45 has hired these inferior and aggrieved white people, like Candice Jackson, who works in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Education. While a Stanford student, Jackson was a staunch critic of affirmative action. She has also said, rather callously, that most accusations of cam-
pus rape are related to alcohol or the end of relationships. She is exactly the wrong type of person to lead an office of civil rights. It is not clear why Jackson was hired, but she has the right ideological credentials – she wrote a book about “the women targeted by the Clinton machine”, worked for the conservative Judicial Watch organization, and has an axe to grind against feminists, and those who support racial economic justice. Charging this woman with defending civil rights is the same as charging Scott Pruitt with protecting the environment! 45 and his colleagues would probably support the same kind of affirmative action in college admissions as they support for immigration. If you have money, are an entrepreneur, or have already achieved, then you deserve admission. If not, that’s just too bad. Are we facing the end of affirmative action and the end of immigration fairness? Most likely, unless we resist. Every day it becomes clearer that 45 will attempt to implement drastic structural change unless our legislative process is altered by the 2018 elections. Meanwhile, 45 is throwing red meat at the braying dogs of racism and xenophobia. And the dogs are barking at those of us who believe in justice and fairness. QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall
Whether you surf the web, meander through your social media, or venture out on the NegroNet, the saga of Colin Kaepernick is a major source of consternation for African-Americans and Progressives. However, our protests have not made a first down, much less a touchdown in the gridiron battle to get Kaepernick back into the National Football League. So here’s the plan…No NFL (Period) unless and until Colin Kaepernick is “repatriated” with a team in this league. #turnitoff Let me begin with a personal testimony. I still haven’t been able to sit and watch any remnants of the film “12 Years a Slave.” My spirit has been routinely traumatized by events that commenced with the execution of Trayvon Martin to the present travesty of the Trump monarchy. I just can’t watch anything about slavery, mass incarceration or official oppression. Nike can, “Just Do It”, but I cannot. My inclination was to see the new film “Detroit” but the

However —if a black man like 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refuses to stand for the national anthem because he feels the country hasn’t done right by black folks, and especially with regard to the unpunished killing of far too many by law enforcement, that is to be understood as treasonous, as grounds for his dismissal from his team, and as a justification to insist that he take his exit from the nation he apparently “hates.” Because after all, who would condemn conditions in America except for one who by definition hated it?” #nailedit Slate Magazine reported a glimpse of hope. “Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch remained seated during the national anthem before Saturday’s exhibition opener against the Arizona Cardinals.” The Daily News reported this the next day; “Michael Bennett (Seattle Seahawks) is taking a stand, by sitting down. How much filibustering was asserted in not answering you directly? The Honorable Maxine Waters has given us a new sermon with gospel song “reclaiming my time.” And the song is already written and at the top of the charts. A couple of weeks ago, the Honorable U. S. One hundred thirty-five members of the Dallas Chapter of the Gospel Music of America (GMWA) traveled to Atlanta, GA to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the National Convention of the Gospel Music Workshop of America July 22-29. During the weeklong celebration, eight songwriters who are members of the Dallas Chapter presented original songs in Mass Choir, Women’s Division, Contemporary Adult Division and the Youth Division and four members participated in the Academic and Administrative Divisions. The Dallas Chapter was recog-
nized at the 50th Anniversary Celebration Banquet and received an award for Exceptional Service in Ticket Sales. Both, the Dallas Chapter's Adult Choir and the Contemporary Adult Choir ministered during the Convention to the more than 6,000 attendees. “I was thrilled to see so many Dallas Chapter members in attendance and actively involved in this year’s convention. In the 22 years I’ve attended the National Convention, this was one of the best. The music was great and the opportunities to minister, fellowship and network were exceptional. “If you have a love for gospel music, I welcome you to join us at the next rehearsal on Saturday, September 9,” said Samuel C. Britt, Dallas Chapter Repre-

tion a success and that’s just not true. I am so mad. Should I go to my boss and tell him the truth? I don’t want to be a part of his team anymore. My boss ain’t ... Dear My Boss,
Dear Alma, At work during a team meeting I came up with an idea to better assist our members and increase membership. Later while sitting in my cubicle, our boss came over and complimented my coworker on submitting such a great idea. I was shocked, I couldn’t believe he took my idea to management and took the credit for it. When I asked him about it he
It is what it is, don’t make a fuss. I promise you you’ll have your day. This happens all the time and leads to one of two scenarios. #1 - this situation will come up again and they’ll look to him to lead the team. Or #2, questions will be asked and they’ll look to him for answers. What I would do is better prepare myself. From now on, after making suggestions during a team meeting, you should come
some LOCO to your MOTION, so you’ll be heard and seen the next go-round, otherwise you’ll look petty. This game is played all day, every day from corporate America to the family owned Drug Store on Main Street. To ease your pain, I’ll tell you what my mama use to tell me, “God don’t like ugly,” LOL, so trust me, your time will come. I like the Michelle Obama quote, “when they go low, we go high.” Umhm, that’s a good one, keep that tucked in your back pocket. No doubt, on the back end of this two-faced co-worker coup, I can’t stress enough the importance of you taking the high road and continuing to be the best you can be. I know it doesn’t always look like it, but hard work and deter-
and supervisors are always eyeballing, watching when you least expect it. They know who’s doing what and what’s doing who. Truth is, we all strive for kudo’s, compliments, fist bumps and high fives, accompanying a big thanks from the boss. When that doesn’t happen, it’s cool. What I’ve found on the other side of 50 is, I was rewarded more when I didn’t get a pat on the back, no acknowledgment at all. It always worked out in the end. I’ve experienced and learned a conference room full of cheers is fleeting, it’s my confidence, fortitude, and purpose that matters most. Those qualities will never leave you, they’ll always propel you to achieve your highest goals. Alma

She’s heard weekdays on Smooth R&B 105.7 FM. While the smooth-

ness of her voice soothes and entertains listeners all over, there’s a wrinkle in time KJ “Midday” Bland wants to get rid of. “I wanted to clean my closet out because most of the time when I host events, you know you can’t take a picture in it again and post it again,” KJ said. “You know, people be like, ‘Oh you had that on three months ago!’” The pressure is on to keep the outfits and photos fresh. Transfer-
ring the build up of abundance brought KJ and Sheila Sedlak, owner of Sophisticated Seconds in Dallas, together. “I wanted to just kind of get some of my stuff in consignment, and I know Sheila had this beautiful boutique and she and I thought of the idea of opening up KJ’s Kloset,” KJ said. Nestled in a corner room of the boutique, located in unit 220 of 1140 Empire Central Drive, is
where you’ll find KJ’s Kloset, featuring clothing that has made appearances throughout Dallas-Fort Worth and around the country, up close and personal with notables in entertainment. “It’s just a way for people to come and shop quality for less, dress cute for less,” KJ said. KJ’s Kloset also hopes to give women in need, who are seeking employment, the star power and confidence to land a job.
