Aretha, it’s all I do! Though you don’t call anymore I sit and wait in vain I guess I’ll rap on your door (your door) Tap on your window pane (tap on your window pane) Aretha Franklin “Until you come back to me, 1973 Aretha Louise Franklin took her last gasp as the “Queen of Soul, but thank God her last breath was not the last we’ll ever hear from her. That’s the beautiful thing about music. We can never watch another Ali fight live, but we can be audience to the live or studio versions of our musical wonders and get a fresh glimpse of their greatness. Just a few short months ago, my daughter, the middle one, the Frankenstein who believes herself smarter than her inventor; challenged me about my favorite among all of Aretha’s songs. She said, “daddy, you might love that song, but that song is F’in eerie; she is talking about stalking! You can’t follow people around and come to their houses; those days are over. Alison was right. What we called love in our generation is officially criminal behavior these days. It’s interesting and informative to note that Stevie Wonder co-wrote this song. He recorded it in 1967, but released it much later. By 1973, this PK (Preacher’s Kid) made it a hit. That was my argument with Alison, something about the lyrics stuck with our generation. Stalking respectfully, was a natural response to “playing hard to get. Stevie was

stalking and made a career crooning about an unknown potential love interest; “My Cherie Amour. “In a cafe or sometimes on a crowded street I’ve been near you, but you never noticed me My Cherie amour, won’t you

tell me how could you ignore That behind that little smile I wore -How I wish that you were mineâ€? But these were the days when using adverse adjectives like “bitch and hoeâ€? was reserved for “uncircumcisedâ€? street hustlers. Nowadays, even the President calls Black females “bitchesâ€? and their sons‌â€?sons of bitches.â€? Aretha made love through song in a different age. Aretha’s “heydayâ€? occurred back when being loved or “in loveâ€? was a sign of wonder and not a sentiment of weakness. For sure, Aretha was so much more than a love slave in song. She performed every genre and she punctuated every song with grazioso. She bellowed about a “Road in Spanish Harlemâ€? so well

that it moved a pre-teen like me to thumb through the pages of my second-hand, leather-bound, navy and ecru World Encyclopedia. Her soulful cadences always created a picture. Was there love to be found in Spanish Harlem too? Franklin’s heyday was before our people achieved acceptable high school graduation rates. But there wasn’t a Negro nowhere who couldn’t spell R-ES-P-E-C-T by late 1967. Aretha Franklin taught us self-pride, letter by letter, by precept and by example. When Panther, Communist and sister-in-the-struggle, Angela Davis faced charges and needed bail, Aretha respectfully rebuffed her father. The Rev. C.L. Franklin, himself a civil rights giant, warned her to stay out of the matter. “I respect him, of course, but I’m going to stick to my beliefs,â€? she posited that Black people gave her the means to make a difference and she would use that money to help Black people. Certainly, at the time, Rev. Franklin had only the best intent for his daughter, but sometimes, even as a wise, wonderful, worrisome dad, you find out that the little girl you raised has become the women you must respect. Alison, like Aretha did, teaches me that all the time. My daughter was right. It was stalking; Aretha was guilty and I must admit that even in her new state of transition; she’s still stalking me. Aretha‌Until you come back to me, replaying this song is all that I’m gonna do!

MY TRUTH

By Cheryl Smith

Publisher

An assignment I gave my summer intern was to write a message to the freshman class at her school. As I read over her suggestions, I thought about how the more things change, the more things actually stay the same. There are some ageold lessons that, no matter what century, appear to be worthy of listening to and learning from. My intern wanted incoming freshmen to value themselves and to not “go crazy” just because they may be experiencing freedom for the first time in their lives. She wanted her classmates, especially the females, to avoid sex at all cost because according to her, none of the male students are looking for a relationship. They just want to have a good time. My message to young women going off to college is simple. When young men try to talk to you, be courteous and respectful, but tell them upfront, “It was nice talking with you but please understand, I am here for two things: a de-

I Messenger

College Life gree and a husband!” Now some might say I am telling them to be a gold digger, but that is not the case. That statement alone will send most young men running because many are not looking for anything permanent. Ladies, be mindful however, your actions have to mirror the words coming out of their mouths. You have to stay focused! Unfortunately, just as when I went to college, there are many young men and women who are ill-prepared for the college experience and, had no one to help them. Thanks to shows, however, like the most-recently cancelled The Quad on BET and back in the day “A Different World,” there was a realistic look at some of the issues college students must face. Then too, sometimes we can be hard-headed and end up dealing with issues that we had been forewarned about. Parents have to have candid talks with our children about the college experience.

There’s a whole lot more than math, science and technology. And there is so much more than alcohol, sex and marijuana. Which brings me to my truth. As a freshman at Florida A&M University, I was in love. Sure there were other guys trying to get to know me, but I wasn’t looking twice and he knew that. He was far more advanced than I and so we didn’t last through our freshman year. Looking back, I have to say I was lucky. There were a number of upperclassmen who looked out for me. They gave me advice and probably sent out a few warnings. I did hear the horror stories about occurrences at parties, young ladies spending the night at fraternity houses and some going home for the break and never returning because they were pregnant. My freshman year was traumatic because one of my roommates just had to have her boyfriend in the room

I Messenger with us. I didn’t know what to do because she was a bigtime junior and I was a lowly freshman. Her boyfriend was there when I went to bed and when I left for class in the morning. And to make matters worse, there were two things that were disturbing to me: they had no problem having sex in front of me while I studied, and they would fight almost every night. Their dysfunctional relationship was very new to me. I wasn’t used to men and women fighting and the closest thing I knew of resembling what I glimpsed as I escaped the room in the midst of their sordid acts had to be what I read on the pages of my Harlequin Romances. Eventually I began sleeping on the couch because the panting and huffing and puff-

ing was a bit much. I understand why freshman weren’t supposed to be in those on-campus apartments. This freshman was not ready. AT ALL! Then something happened. It seemed that one of the roommates in the other bedroom wanted her “man” to stay the night also, but the 4th roommate wasn’t having it. So roommate number 3 would bring her “man” out into the dining area to get their thing on. Talk about a dilemma! Where was I to go to get away from the sex? I don’t know what happened to roommate #4 but if I saw her today I would give her a big hug. Many a night I would get up from the couch, and take my pillow and blanket and go into the room with Mary. She was a graduating senior who

August 24, 2018

5

was much older. She was 26 to my 18. I kept asking her to encourage the two who wanted to have sex to share a room. Eventually she advocated for me and I was able to have a healthier living environment. Everyone needs an advocate, someone to look out for them during a crucial time. It would have been so easy for me to fall into the same acts as roommate number 2 and we could have had an orgy going on. Instead I refused to go along. Everyone is not that fortunate. Peer pressure is real. My message to upperclass students: become an advocate/mentor to a freshman, or anyone you see going astray. Guide them. Your efforts could be life-altering or life-saving!

Clyburn calls for Democrats to advertise By Stacy M. Brown (NNPA Newswire Contributor)

While there’s at least a perceived growing number of Democrats who say they want to replace California Rep. Nancy Pelosi as the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn has emerged as a favorite among his peers to become the first African American to hold that position. In an exclusive interview with the NNPA Newswire, the 25-year congressman said that, while he’s ready for the challenge, Democrats currently have much bigger fish to fry. “The first order of business is to win the [midterm] elections on November 6,” Clyburn said. “That’s what I’ve been concentrating on.” Clyburn and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Cedric Richmond each told the NNPA Newswire that they’ve identified 37 districts across the country they believe can be won by Democrats this year, which would wrest control of the House from Republicans. “We feel, with the right kind of effort, we can win,” Clyburn said. Clyburn listed three keys to success this November. The first key, Clyburn said, is to prioritize the Black vote; Democrats can’t afford to take the African American vote for granted. The secondly, the Democrats shouldn’t rely on an anti-President Donald Trump wave to get out the vote. Finally, Clyburn said that candidates must advertise in the Black Press, if they want to win in November. “We are also talking about districts where Barack Obama won twice and where Hillary Clinton also won, but these voters don’t turn out for the so-called ‘off-year elections,’” Clyburn said. “We can’t let these voters feel like we’re taking them for granted.” Clyburn, 78, said he was recently taken aback by one candidate, who said that he could win the Black vote by running on an anti-Trump platform. “Wait one second,” Clyburn said that he told the individual. “We can’t just go around being ‘Republican-light.’ We have to be out there putting forth an alternative message, for our base, and we have to reach out to Black voters and let them know we’re not taking them or any of our base for granted.” To that end, Clyburn said advertising campaigns must largely include the Black Press.

Rep. Jim Clyburn “It’s very, very important…Chairman Richmond and I have had candidates in and we’ve been telling them that one of the best ways to demonstrate that you’re not taking the Black vote for granted is to advertise in the Black Press,” Clyburn said. The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) is the oldest and largest trade group representing the Black Press, comprised of more than 200 Black-owned newspapers operating in the the United States. “I’ve been in [the Black Press]. My daughter and I ran a newspaper down South, so I know that candidates tend to take Black media for granted,” Clyburn said. “They tend to judge Black media the same way they do other media and you just can’t do that, because the business model is totally different.” Each Sunday after attending Morris Brown A.M.E. Church in Charleston, S.C., Clyburn said he and other churchgoers habitually pick up the local Black-owned newspaper. “People tend to pay attention to the headlines, the stories and the ads in the Black Press so it’s vitally important that candidates know this,” Clyburn said. A former history teacher, Clyburn said Trump’s obsession with dismantling Obama’s legacy is reminiscent of tactics employed by Andrew Johnson to demean his predecessor, Abraham Lincoln. Johnson, who was impeached by House, had a vision of America as a White man’s government, according to historians. “If you remember, it’s the same kind of reaction Johnson had to Lincoln and I remem-

ber sitting alone once in the Oval Office with Obama and I told him that this would be the kind of reaction he could expect,” Clyburn said. “[Obama] was never going to get the kind of respect for his presidency that was shown to presidents before him,” Clyburn said. “The narrative that exists in this country is that there are certain things that Black folks are not supposed to do and one of those things is becoming the president of the United States and [President Trump] and his administration, feel they have to do whatever they can to wipe out any semblance that Barack Obama was ever president of the United States.” Clyburn continued: “[Trump] has a deep-seated hatred for people of color and it manifests itself every day.” Though he doesn’t support or agree politically with former Trump aide Omarosa Manigault Newman, Clyburn said he was deeply troubled when Trump referred to her as a “low life” and a “dog.” “I’m the father of three daughters and I’m deeply insulted by the president of the United States referring to an African American women the way he referred to her,” he said. “Politics aside, I’m insulted that the president of the United States would denigrate the office in this way.” Clyburn continued: “The president asked an important question when he was running, ‘What do we have to lose?’ Well, we have lost dignity and the respect of the presidency, because of his coarseness in the office. When you lose respect, you’ve lost about everything there is to lose.” While he still supports Pelosi, Clyburn said that if the Democrats take back the House, he’s up for the job as speaker. “I have always supported her, but I have always remembered a sermon I heard my father give a number of times,” Clyburn said. “That sermon stayed with me and he said, ‘keep your lamps trimmed and burning to be ready when the bridegroom comes.’ My point is, I’ve never forgotten that sermon so I keep my lamp burning so I’m ready.” Stacy Brown is an NNPA Newswire Contributor and co-author of “Michael Jackson: The Man Behind the Mask: An Insider’s Story of the King of Pop.” Follow Stacy on Twitter @stacybrownmedia.

The Fight to Save the Environment By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

I remain an eager proponent of the Clean Power Plan, proposed by former President Barack Obama in 2014. The badly needed regulation, backed by very strong science, has as one of its major goals a twenty-five percent reduction in pollutants such as smog and soot that lead to an unhealthy climate, serious respiratory diseases, heart and lung disease and other deadly ailments. At the time of its announcement officials from the Environmental Protection Agency predicted that the plan would result in nearly 150,000 fewer asthma attacks experienced by children, and that thousands of health-related deaths would be prevented. The Clean Power Plan would produce tremendous energy savings for American families and create hundreds of thousands of new jobs, officials said. Almost immediately, the Clean Power Plan was attacked by elected officials and lobbyists with

strong ties to the coal industry, and to those whose industrial enterprises were major contributors to polluting the atmosphere. Court challenges were brought by opponents of the plan, and at present its implementation is awaiting a ruling by a federal court. Among the institutions that attacked the plan as soon as it was announced was the Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington, DC based think tank, and a supporter of the coal industry. Many former Heritage Foundation employees now have influential positions in the Trump administration, and they have prolonged philosophical positions denying climate change, and of denigrating its proponents.

In another blow to cleaning our air and to the implementation of reasonable policies such as the Clean Power Plan, the Trump administration recently proposed a plan that would give the ability to control coal plant emissions to the states, a position long held by many of those associated with the Heritage Foundation, and by coal company proponents. If such a plan is successful, it would cripple the Clean Power Plan, and seriously harm our nation’s efforts to improve our air quality, reduce the number of respiratory-related diseases and deaths, and save energy costs. It seems that those who are in the current administration are opposed to all that President Obama was able to accomplish during

the eight years that he led our nation. The Trump administration refused to sign the Paris Climate Accord, it back out of the nuclear agreement with Iran, it has sought to eliminate the Affordable Care Act and now this attack on one of the most crucial environmental policies proposed in Washington during the past quarter-century. Generations to come will pay a heavy price if we do not do something about our climate. One has only to look at the prolonged droughts, the dangerous weather and the out of control wild fires that we have experienced. We must have in place sensible policies such as the Clean Power Plan. Those who oppose it and other plans designed to improve our environment are being short-sighted, mean-spirited and they are simply just wrong! Congresswoman Johnson represents the 30th Congressional District of Texas in the United States House of Representatives.

Omarosa Is Not Your Dog, Trump I am no fan of Omarosa Manigault Newman, the mononymous diva who dominates the airwaves whenever she wants to. Her new book, “Unhinged,” which I won’t read, is billed as a tell-all on “45’s” White House and its shenanigans. In making the rounds, “Omierosie” (my nickname for her) has played tapes that seem to corroborate at least some of her allegations about “45.” More importantly, her tapes are evidence that the game captured the hunter. In other words, Omierosie took a page from 45’s book and trusted fewer people than even “45” did. Now the 45-defense machine, led by Sarah Huckabee Sanders, has gone out of its way to paint her as all kinds of liars. Surprise, surprise. And folks have run to the airwaves to suggest that the People’s House on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is inhabited entirely by liars. If you elect a clown, expect a circus. But this is more than a spectacle now; it is the systematic denigration of Black people and Black women that must be repudiated and rejected. The dehumanization of Black people allowed whites to enslave us and then justify enslavement. The defeminization of Black women allowed White men to use us sexually, and shielded them, after enslavement, from any consequences. Legally, it was almost impossible, until recently, to convict a White man of raping a Black woman. Recy Taylor’s rapists got away with it, and White women stood by them. Omierosie may be an integrity-challenged lowlife (that

The Last Word by Dr. Julianne Malveaux

didn’t start with this book), but she is not a dog. Calling Omarosa a dog is a sly way of 45 trying to call her a b–ch, or a female dog. She is, as we all are, a terribly flawed human being. In naming her a dog, as in calling Congresswoman Maxine Waters “low IQ” is casting aspersion on all Black women. The civil rights activist Ruby Sales addressed this on a Facebook post that bears sharing. Ruby Sales’ Facebook post said: “Trump called Omarosa a dog. For younger folk let me break it down. His slander is laden with White Supremacist historical slander of Black women in a culture of White male rape and a reign of terror. Their assault against Black women extends back to captivity and enslavement in sites of terror in a strange land where we were hostages to the sexual whims of White men. Moreover, these men were also pedophiles who raped young Black girls. The Facebook post continued: “To justify their perverse behavior, desires and

the colonization and invasion of the lives and body territory of Black girls and women, they slandered us as whores and immoral sexual predators whose sexual app et ites know no limits. So when you sit quietly and allow Tr u m p — no matter what you think a b o u t Omarosa—to call her a dog, you give him a pass to raise up the White smear of us that your older sisters went to the mat placing our lives on the line to end this culture.” Omarosa isn’t the only former White House aide who has written about the dysfunctional White House. Sean Spicer did the same thing, yet he has not been called a dog. Instead, he was feted in Washington with a book party that actually charged an admission fee. No shade and no disparagement from the White House. Censure seems only to come when a Black woman is speaking her truth. It is an interesting time to be an African American woman. On the one hand, during this September month, we see

11 Black women gracing the covers of magazines. Beyoncé is on the cover of Vogue; Rihanna on the cover of British Vogue; Tracy Ellis Ross on the cover of Elle, Zendaya on the cover of Marie Claire; Issa Ray graces the cover of Ebony; actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish is on the cover of Glamour; Lupita Nyong’o is on the cover of Porte; and there are others who show up on smaller publications. In total, writes Joy Sewing, African American women graced 11 magazine covers in the all-important September issues, the issues that often attract the most advertising and also set trends for the fall and the rest of the year. The Beyoncé cover for Vogue is especially impactful, because Beyoncé used her influence and editorial direction to bring a young, Black man in as her photographer. It was the first time that an African American was the cover photographer for Vogue magazine in its history. On the one hand we are being celebrated, and on the other hand, we are being slammed. Commercial sensibilities are out of sync with the bigotry of this president, but can these commercial sensibilities be used to topple 45’s bigotry? Beyoncé brought a Black cover photographer to Vogue Magazine. Can her Bey-hive bring change to prevailing racist attitudes? Will the women who pick up these magazines send a strong message to the woman-hating, genital grabbing President? Omarosa may be a lot of things, Chump, but she is not your dog, and neither are the rest of us!

CRAZY RICH ASIANS

C R A ZY RICH ASIANS is a laugh out loud romantic comedy with something for everyone (even if you're not Asian). There's the romantic love story between Asian American economics professor Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, and her Chinese boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding). It features a family dynamic with a very wealthy Chinese family who lives in Singapore, who Rachel had never met and has no idea of the crazy wealth the family has. Then there is a hilarious comic twist to the movie with the family of Rachel's former college roommate. The entire family is crazy. Her former college roommate Goh Peik Lin, actress Awkawafina, is a Chinese hood chick with money and her dad, played by The Hangover's Ken Jeong. As the head of the well-off (but not super rich) family, he is a father without a filter; saying anything that comes to his mind without any hesitation or consideration. I would have liked to have seen more of his character because he was one of the best things about the movie.

At the start of the movie the couple, who live in New York, decide to go to Singapore for Nick's best friend's wedding. When they board an airline in a very luxurious first class section Rachel starts to wonder, just how rich is her boyfriend? He turns out to be extremely wealthy with "old money' that goes several generations back. His family is considered "royalty" in his homeland of Singapore and Nick is considered to be the most eligible bachelor in the country. When Rachel meets Nick's female cousins and former girlfriends the hate begins with every female she meets trying to bring her down. There is more pettiness going on between the woman than in an episode of a "Real Housewives" TV show. And then there's Nick's mother, Elenor ( Michelle Yeoh). She plays the "dragon lady" of the family and immediately upon meeting Rachel she is as cold as a dead fish and

very shortly after meeting her son's girlfriend tells her that she will never be good enough for her son. The family throws lavish parties that are just crazy in the amount of money they spend. A few of those parties, including a bachelor party on a barge in international waters and the bachelorette's party, held on a private tropical island will just make your jaw drop, but that's part of the fun of the movie. The movie is based on a best selling novel and it is a tight little story that is well paced and balanced with both humor and romance. I really enjoyed it. CRAZY RICH ASIANS is rated PG13 and it has a run time of 2 hours. In a summer filled with blockbuster action and sci-fi movies, it's a welcome reprieve from all of the explosions and car chases. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate CRAZY RICH ASIANS a LARGE.

Valder Beebe Show

THAT CELEBRITY INTERVIEW Dan Harris, ABC news anchor Harris discovered that meditation made him more focused, less yanked around by his emotions, and, according to his wife, significantly less annoying. And he wants others to try it too.

It was exciting interviewing Dan Harris, ABC news anchor. Viewing him when he delivers the world new, he’s poised and collected, yet in 2004. Dan was filling in reading the headlines on Good Morning America, a ABC morning show watched by about 5.019 million people back then. During a short bulletin on new medicine, Harris started to breakdown. “I just lost it,” Dan recalled, he said his heart started racing, his lungs seized up, and his palms were sweating, Dan could feel his mouth dry-up. He said “I couldn’t breathe.” He struggled through the last few lines of the bulletin, then signed off as professionally as he possibly could. It was he clear to him that he had experienced his worst panic attack ever. Fast forward to 2018, he has become an unlikely mediation enthusiast and bestselling author. His recent book, Mediation for Fidgety Skeptics. Almost 15 years ago, Dan Harris had a panic attack on live television, and that incident ultimately led him to embrace meditation, a practice he previously consider ridiculous.

VBS: You and I get to talk about Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics. Tell

me about meditation and Dan Harris. DH: Actually the whole thing stared because unfortunately I had a panic attack on Good Morning American on live television back in 2004. I was anchoring the news update, the person coming on at the top of show and reads headlines. I just kind of lost it. I freaked out. I could not breathe and I had to quit right in the middle and it was really em-

barrassing and the backstory is really more embarrassing because I had spent a lot of time in the war zones as an ambitious young reporter after 911. I had come home and gotten depressed and very unwisely self-medicated with recreational drugs. Even though my drug career was pretty short and intermittent and I was definitely not using drug on the air. My doctor later told it was enough to artificially raise the level of adrenalin in my brain and make it more like that I would have a panic attach. That kind of set me off on that weird and windy journey that ultimately landed me on meditation. I’ve written two books about it, I wrote a book titled Ten Percent Happier and more recent Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics which is a book and audio book. It’s all about trying to help people who think meditation is not for them realize that actual there is a lot of science that suggests that is is really good for you and anybody can do it.
