MALVEAUX: What must we do to help HBCUs
The LAST WORD By Dr. Julianne Malveaux Will another HBCU “bite the dust?” Truly, it depends on us. Pennsylvania’s Cheyney University, the oldest HBCU in the nation (founded in 1837) has been on probation since November 2015. If the Middle States Commission on Higher Education does not accept a sustainability report that is due on September 1, the school may lose its accreditation. Without accreditation, Cheyney students cannot receive federal financial aid like Pell grants and federal loans. Many would be forced to leave school because they can’t afford to attend school without assistance. Cheyney is part of the Stop the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, an organization that took nearly 20 years to settle a lawsuit with the college because (PASSHE) funded predominately white institutions (PWIs) in Pennsylvania more favorably than Cheyney. While PASSHE provided Cheyney with some money to address the issues of inequality, most say the amount they provided was just a fraction of that due. At the same time, Cheyney has borrowed millions of dollars from PASSHE. Because of the borrowing, PASSHE has assembled a task force that would sell Cheyney’s land, slash its academic programs, reduce enrollment (which is already extremely low), eliminate NCAA sports and also cut staff. In other words they would kill the college. Can we afford to lose another HBCU? Cheyney’s detractors say that the college is not necessary, and
10
that PASSHE should merge it with another nearby college, either sister HBCU Lincoln University, or another PASSHE school, West Chester University. Some say it isn’t race, but mismanagement, that has plagued Cheyney. But too many HBCU leaders have been accused of mismanagement, when the real issue, especially for state-supported institutions, is a lack of resources and a history of underfunding Black colleges. And most face the challenge of underfunding with s o m e innovation. For example, Cheyney has developed a new business model that includes creating an Institute for the Contemporary African American Experience. They envision this institute as a potential magnet for student enrollment, which will bring more revenue to the college. But with a September 1 deadline nipping at their heels, the survival of Cheyney is in the hands of the accrediting organization. An organization called Heeding Cheyney’s Call (HCC) has held events and urged people to support Cheyney. They say that Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf (D) can intervene before Middle States makes an accreditation decision, and that he can also instruct PASSHE to back off from their plan to sell Cheyney’s land. An August 1 event attracted the support of both local and national leaders, including city council members, state legislators, members of Congress, clergy, and
others. US Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) is among those supporting Cheyney. That support, commendable as it is, isn’t enough to save Cheyney. The college, like so many HBCUs, needs resources and the state can’t be counted on to provide them. So will Cheyney be the next HBCU to bite the dust? Or is the African American community, and other concerned folks, prepared to step in the gap for the college? Cheyney has an abysmal alumni giving rate, at less than 10 percent (one report pegged it as low as 6 percent). It is unconscionable that alums would flock back to campus for social events or graduations, but not write checks to support their college. To be sure, some alums get tired appeals that highlight dire emergency situations. But HBCUs are in a state of emergency, when people constantly question their reason for being, and when federal and state dollars are scarcer than ever. Too many believed 45’s prevarication about supporting HBCUs. Too many presidents got a photo op, but no more money, when they met with 45. Those of us who wring our hands and decry the state of HBCUs can do more than we are doing now. Whether we attended HBCUs or not, we can support them. We can adopt one and become regular contributors to that university. We can encourage students to attend HBCUs. We can do fundraisers for HBCUs, even in places that don’t have HBCUs. In Las Vegas, Nevada, a city coun-
cilman stages a football game where an HBCU plays the University of Nevada Las Vegas’ football team. The event raises tens of thousands of dollars for the HBCU team that plays UNLV. In addition to fundraising, though, we must also think creatively about HBCU sustainability. If buildings are not fully utilized, why not create summer, evening, and weekend programs for the public? Is there revenue-generating distance learning? Have stakeholders taken time to generate new ideas for sustainability? With the 45 attack on affirmative action, HBCUs may be more important than ever for African American college attendance. When doors close at other institutions, HBCUs will be there if we support them. I’ve heard the argument that some HBCUs have challenges and may not provide a Harvard-quality education (few schools do). The quality of an HBCU education is at least partly a function of the resources available to that college. You can’t have state-of-the-art labs or media centers without money. Where are the resources? If we want strong, solid HBCUs, we need to support them. We can only blame ourselves if Cheyney, or other colleges close for lack of support. Federal and state funds can make a difference. But individual and foundation contributions are equally, if not more, important. As students head back to school this August, we have to ask if those headed to HBCUs will be able to enjoy their 10th, 25th, or 50th college reunion. They won’t unless we all step up.

The Age of Aquarius
QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall
“Talkback Liberation Radio” (TLR) was hosted nightly by Dallas’ “controversial” County Commissioner John Wiley Price. The now-defunct KKDA Radio that propelled the “Flyjock,” Tom Joyner, produced a mainstay of AM night talk shows in Dallas. TLR was provocative, providential and generally problematic for the status quo. One brilliant Black Prodigy; Richard Claxton Gregory, made several appearances on TLR…and all of his preachments were profound. There was one very memorable show featuring Dick Gregory near the turn of the new millennium. It was a crazy time. American capitalists were in rare form and y’all was buying everything from extra insulin to computer insurance for fear of what might happen. I still got a case of potted meat, some peanut butter and a bundle of one dollar bills in my underground bunker!! Anyway…Dick Gregory made a foretelling of the “Age of Aquarius.” Some of you are old enough to remember that 1960’s hit. “When the moon is in the Seventh House…And
Jupiter aligns with Mars. Then peace will guide the planets…And love will steer the stars. This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.” The Age of Aquarius has always held a modicum of mystery in the astrological sciences. Dick Gregory pronounced profusely that in the Age of Aquarius there would be no more mysteries. Anything you conspired to do in the dark might just as well be done in broad daylight. Dick mused
and Ouija boards. “There ain’t no use to ducking and hiding now, it’s all going to come out and everybody’s going to know about it.” If you were ashamed of whom you were with, where you were going or how your hypocritical habits might look…you better quit because in the Age of Aquarius all of your secrets were going to be laid bare before the world. Your paramour would be no more and your gifted-
that although Black/Southern culture prescribed that a “Hit dog would holler,” you wouldn’t have to wait for the holler. In the Age of Aquarius you might see the dog get hit. Either by happenstance of circumstance, Dick’s messianic message marked the beginning of an age when social media and social outlets would replace crystal balls
ness can’t hide your shiftiness. When my saddened 13-yearold, Hailee came and told me that Gregory “was no more,” we were both dumbfounded. But the next day when the word that Jerry Lewis transitioned, it made sense…at least to me. Check this-Dick died at 84, Jerry at 91, that’s seven years right.
That may not sound significant to most, but if you peruse the annual statistics, Black male life expectancy is generally shorter than the seven year difference between the two iconic comedians. Dick closed that gap by instituting a rigor of healthy living and routine fasting. Dick Gregory is gone and still exposing the truth to those who will listen and abide. Dick Gregory was a “Man’s man” but not sexist; the People’s prophet but not a carnival barker. He was the consummate comedian and a learned lecturer. Psychologists tell us there are 16 distinct personality types. But within that 16 are thousands of variations dependent upon passion, environment, education, and the experiences that we have. Gregory was born and remained unique. There’s a multitude of his musings we shouldn’t part with. “I never learned hate at home, or shame. I had to go to school for that.” Or, “Everything we do we should look at in terms of millions of people who can’t afford it.” Or “When I first broke through, there was only NBC, CBS and ABC, and they had news in the morning and in the evening - there wasn’t no 24-hour news.” Even with 24 hour news cycle in the midst of the Age of Aquarius we have no clue as to how we replace Dick Gregory.

about his recovery and he even had plans to appear at a show on Saturday in the nation’s capital. Born Richard Claxton “Dick” Gregory in St. Louis, Missouri on Oct. 12, 1932, Gregory became a comedian and civil rights activist whose social satire changed the way Whites perceived African-American comedians, according to his biography. Dick Gregory entered the national comedy scene in 1961 when Chicago’s Playboy Club (as a direct request from publisher Hugh Hefner) booked him as a replacement for white comedian, “Professor” Irwin Corey. Until then Gregory had worked mostly at small clubs with predominantly Black audiences (he met his wife, Lillian Smith, at one such club), according to his biography. “Such clubs paid comedians an average of five dollars per night; thus Gregory also held a day job as a postal employee. His tenure as a replacement for Corey was so successful — at one performance he won over an audience that included southern White convention goers — that the Playboy Club offered him a contract extension
12
from several weeks to three years,” Gregory’s biography said. “By 1962, Gregory had become a nationally known headline performer, selling out nightclubs, making numerous national television appearances, and recording popular comedy albums.” Gregory’s biography continued: “It’s important to note that no biography of Gregory would be complete without mentioning that he and his beloved wife, ‘Lil,’ had 10 children, who have become highly respected members of the national community in a variety of fields. They are: Michele, Lynne, Pamela, Paula, Stephanie (a.k.a. Xenobia), Gregory, Christian, Miss, Ayanna and Yohance.” While a student at Sumner High School in St. Louis he led a March protesting segregated schools. Later, inspired by the work of leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and organizations such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Gregory took part in the Civil Rights Movement and used his celebrity status to draw attention to such issues as segregation and disfranchisement, according to his biography.
“When local Mississippi governments stopped distributing Federal food surpluses to poor blacks in areas where SNCC was encouraging voter registration, Gregory chartered a plane to bring in several tons of food,” his biography said. “He participated in SNCC’s voter registration drives and in sit-ins to protest segregation, most notably at a restaurant franchise in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Only later did Gregory disclose that he held stock in the chain.” Gregory’s autobiography, “Nigger,” was published in 1963 and it became the number one best-selling book in America. Over the decades it has sold in excess of seven million copies. He explained his choice for the title in the foreword of the book, where Dick Gregory wrote a note to his mother, his biography explained. “Whenever you hear the word ‘Nigger’,” he said, “you’ll know they’re advertising my book.” Through the 1960s, Gregory spent more time on social issues and less time on performing, his biography noted. He participated in marches and parades to support a range of causes, including opposition to the Vietnam War, world hunger and drug abuse. Dorothy Leavell, chairman of the NNPA and publisher of the Crusader Newspaper Group said that this was a sad moment and a great loss to America, especially Black America. “Dick Gregory was a personal friend, but also a voice for Black America which has now been stilled,” said Leavell. “Dick was also a close friend to the Black Press and the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA).” Leavell continued: “While we mourn this loss we are grateful for the many contributions he made that have helped us all.” Chavis agreed. “Dick Gregory epitomized the rare combination of being an intellectual genius and one of our greatest social visionaries,” Chavis said. “The National Newspapers Publishers Association deeply mourns the passing of freedom fighter Dick Gregory.”

AUGUST 25, 2017 I Messenger Husband Doesn’t Defend Wife for nothing and that my hus- says is what he means. It may not be him and that’s just not cool. Don’t Ask Alma: good band shouldn’t just sit around and what you want to hear, but it doesn’t be disturbed, I’m not just defending Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and Twitter
Dear Alma, My husband accidently dialed my cell phone number and I heard him and his friend talking about me. His friend was saying that I talk about my husband behind his back and that I’m always talking about how much money I make and how I take care of everything, which I do. He was going on and on, saying that I call him nasty names and always saying how he is just a low life,

take that from me. Here’s the kicker, my husband didn’t even defend me. This man was talking about me like a dog and my husband did not respond or do anything. My feelings are so hurt. This is my fourth marriage and I don’t want to break up my marriage, but I don’t understand a man that doesn’t stand up for his wife. How do I get my husband to be a man and defend me like he should? Anonymous Dear Anonymous Let’s step back and talk men for a minute. Usually when grown-aged men have a conversation, it’s short direct and to the point. They don’t add unnecessary words. They give it to you straight, just like they order drinks at a bar. When having a conversation with a man, what he
mean it isn’t what needs to be said. Now here, I got your back sister sassy, it’s heartbreaking to not be defended by your husband, but TBT, you should be familiar with that action, or lack thereof. If it’s true what his friend is saying, your husband doesn’t defend himself, which is why he isn’t defending you. Here’s a tablespoon because I know you can only swallow small doses of constructive criticism. Yes, there’s no doubt, it cuts deeply when the one you love, leaves you standing all by your lonesome. But here’s my question to you: Are you really talking about your husband that bad in public? Even in private, that’s jacked. Are you unbearably demanding? Are you using obnoxious and hateful words towards him? I’d say yes, sounds to me like you’re bullying
said friend, honestly it appears, you need a checkup from the neck up, and no one has enough nerve to tell you. Listen to my sound advice and let it take root. Re-evaluate your actions and take responsibility for them. In due season, we all reap what we sow, and right now you’re sowing some seeds of foolhardiness. That phone call was no accident. It was the universe giving you a dose of what you deserve. I’d suggest you turn your world around and start using the wise counsel you’re ready to douse all over your husband. Hear me when I say, men protect what they respect. Offer your husband the respect
that he deserves and he’ll start to safeguard the love you share. Alma
