RiverFront Jazz Festival: Dallas’ Inaugural Story By Betheny Sargent Photos by Eva D. Coleman Texas Metro News
Jonathan Butler, Yarbrough and Peoples, and Will Downing
10
–Naturally when many think of a Jazz Festival, one city comes to mind — New Orleans. However, a new city will have you expanding your musical horizons. Three full days of Jazz and Blues. Three separate stages. One purpose. The Black Academy of Arts and Letter’s founder, Curtis King has purposefully created The RiverFront Jazz Fest to bring lovers of music and arts alike at the Horse Park in Sunny South Dallas. Opening the month of September, aside from the expected Texas heat and the unexpected red dirt, Dallas’ inaugural Jazz Festival was a successful and an unforgettable experience. Dallas welcomed home native artists Erykah Badu and Yarbrough and Peoples as well as national recording artists such as Reuben Studdard, Melanie Fiona, Jonathan Butler, Keiko Matsui and Rachelle Ferrell. “I feel no need to compare festivals,” said King. “When there is a need for the people you have to fill the void. “Every festival has its own uniqueness and I am trying to ensure its uniqueness when it comes to Dallas.” While one might think a Horse Park is an unusual venue to host a Jazz Festival, this is Texas -- and the ample spacing
and seating capacity for 15,000 was ideal. There were many food vendors including The Cake Bar, Elaine’s Kitchen, The Daiquiri Shoppe, Fabulous Fish, Soul Bowl, and Pineapple Express. There was also beverage bars, visual artists and showcases for young, up-and-coming featured artists from the Booker T. Washington School of Performing Arts, as well as Simone Jasmine, Brittney Holmes and Rachel Dupard performing on a third and separate stage. “The RiverFront Jazz Festival promoted unity,” said King. What better way to serve that purpose and to bring about unity than music for the soul, food for the body and relaxation for the mind? With the unfortunate devastation in Houston looming on the minds of many, artists paid homage to the victims of Hurricane Harvey; a just and admirable thing to do. The RiverFront Jazz Festival served another purpose -- to remind us that we are all Texans. Much to delight of many in attendance, King confirmed plans to make the Jazz Fest an annual event for Dallas. To get a head start on next year’s festivities contact The Black Academy of Arts and Letters. To volunteer with The Black Academy of Arts and Letters for Dallas’ 2nd annual Jazz Fest, contact Kia Davis at 214-7432452.

NABJ establishes Hurricane Fund, solicits support as disasters continue to wreak havoc NABJ members impacted by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey are encouraged to apply
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) continues to express concern and extends offers of support as Hurricanes Irma and Harvey caused deaths and destruction while also displacing thousands of families. NABJ has established a fund to help NABJ members impacted by the hurricanes. Donations are requested here: NABJ Relief for Hurricanes Irma and Harvey. Those NABJ members directly impacted by the storms may email NABJ Region III Director Ken Lemon at HurricaneFund@nabj.org with appeals and to share detailed information about their need.
tion, and NABJ is proud to have USVI media professionals among its member ranks. "We're waiting for clearance and an update from the Coast Guard," said Sen. Blyden, adding that from his own assessment of various areas, the damage is pretty bad. "Every other light post is broken, trees are uprooted, many homes are destroyed or lost the roofs and most cars are severely damaged with broken windows and body damage." The senator said emotions are high as many have no insurance and lost everything. And he doesn't expect the recovery to be quick,
President Sarah Glover has been reaching out to journalists and receiving updates from areas that have reported the most damage as a result of the Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in Houston, United States Virgin Islands and Florida. "We are deeply concerned about the devastation and inconveniences these disasters have caused NABJ members," said President Glover. "There have been many lives lost, families displaced, and businesses and homes destroyed. But there is hope visible in the communities whiplashed by Irma. This resilience is seen in the news reports documented by journalists and NABJ members." The United States Virgin Islands were hit hard by Irma. St. Thomas' death toll stands at four and at least 40 people are still missing, according to Sen. Marvin Blyden. Unfortunately in St. John, where Hurricane Irma hit the hardest, it's taking longer to get the proper assessment. USVI has been a longtime partner of NABJ, and a supporter of the Founders Reception at the annual convention since 2011. The tourism department routinely sends USVI journalists and students to the NABJ conven-
generators, batteries, and of course, food. Many have stepped up with donations in the form of clothing, shelter, food, water, and other acts of kindness, but more help is needed and the NABJ would like to target NABJ members who have been impacted, many of whom are also covering the story. "Many journalists have put their lives in harm's way to bring accurate coverage to help citizens navigate through dangerous areas," Glover noted. Much of the areas affected by the hurricanes are located within the NABJ's Region III. Director Ken Lemon, along with others, has stressed the need for member support. "We want support and donations to reach ground zero, where resources will be put to good use," he said. "There's so much more help that is needed and it is going to take a while, just as is still the case with those affected by Hurricane Katrina over a decade ago."
inexpensive or easy. "This was historical in that the winds were high as 225 miles per hour and no one has experienced anything like this," he explained. "When we were hit by Hurricane Marilyn (1995) it was bad but it wasn't nearly as bad as Irma. Still it took a year to a year and a half to rebuild. Irma was terrible. Irma was devastating and we don't know how long it's going to take to recover." As citizens and the USVI government prepare for rebuilding areas that rely heavily on tourism, Blyden says while money is a definite need, the immediate needs are ice, water,

Glover agreed, adding that during NABJ's Convention in New Orleans in August, members worked on the homes of some citizens who haven't been in their homes since 2005. "There is no quick fix for what those who have been impacted are facing. We also applaud the first responders and everyone who is going above and beyond the call of duty. There's so much to do!" NABJ applauds the journalists on the front lines covering the story. In addition to the many good deeds previously reported here, 2016 NABJ Community Service Award winner and ABC 13 Reporter Chauncey Glover delivered a baby while covering Hurricane Harvey. With Hurricane Jose on the horizon, if needed, those in Jose's path may be added to the hurricane fund effort. NABJ worked, in 2005, to help aid members who needed assistance after the ravages of Hurricane Katrina.

Hurricane Poverty?
QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall
I'm partial to the name Vincent, probably because my parents preferred it for their first born. Yes, I’m the firstborn. My pride is in not being a Bobby, Ronnie, Ricky or Mike. I love the name Vincent so much that I look for any semblance of it anywhere. 2017 was sure to be a bonanza for the “V word.” You may not, but I still follow my grandmother’s habit of consulting the Old Farmer’s Almanac each year. Who needs them slick talking preachers who prophesy, or name it and claim it for a “seed offering?” I’m betting on the same constellational counsel that our ancestors of every race, creed and kind did. This year’s almanac highlighted several salient dates and events, but a smile formed when I read the 2017 Hurricane name list. You guessed it. 2017 was set to start with Arlene and Bret…Harvey and Irene seemed to have been squeezed harmlessly in the middle and Vince came after P, R, S and T. The other day, while hawking a Huffington Post article, I realized that Vince will never make it to prominence this season. Hurricane Poverty will end up being the first and last significant storm of 2017. In fact Hurricane Poverty lingers on and gets stronger ever year in these “Yet to be United States.” “Hurricanes don’t care if you’re rich, poor, white or black — but that doesn’t mean that every person is equally vulnerable to a storm. Low-income families are more likely to live
12
in flood-prone areas with deficient infrastructure. Hurricane Harvey is yet another example of this pattern. While large parts of Houston flooded, low-income neighborhoods fared worse than wealthier areas. “Oftentimes, low-income communities and communities of color don’t get the necessary protection when it comes to flood control,” said Robert Bullard, a professor of urban planning and environmental policy at Texas Southern University in Houston. “That
pattern is playing out now.” In the eight counties hardest hit by Hurricane Harvey, less than one in five homeowners have flood insurance, according to analysis from the Washington Post. The National Flood Insurance Program has underestimated the risk of flooding in many areas. Many low-income families without flood insurance will struggle to rebuild their homes. If that sounds bad, it gets worse. “It’s not just the flooding. It’s also the industrial pollution,” Bullard said. “When you have something like Har-
vey, it elevates the risk of shutdowns, accidents, spills and explosions.” Hurricane Vince would be less noteworthy than Hurricane Poverty even if it hit half of the Eastern seaboard at Cat 5 strength. Hurricane Poverty is so deeply ensconced in our culture that it may never be uprooted. Thousands of low-income families and single mothers will be devastated by the effects of this storm. We can ascertain that by simply recalling the Katrina and Rita transplants in our midst. But Hurricane Poverty is even worse. What becomes of the poor when neither the President nor any of his cabinet harbors a second thought of their plight? Where are the Liberals? We have legions of working people living out of their cars and dressing out of their backpacks. We have a growing number of destitute “Americans” who battle with drugs, mental issues or both and are transient villagers in modern day “Leper” camps that arise and are crushed as suddenly and as carelessly as ant beds. I like you, pray and send my money to help Hurricane Harvey and Irma victims. But at some point we have got to address the 564,708 homeless humans that America admits and the other half million that show up at work after showing up at the local shelter. When “Fickle 45” and his “Conservative Concubine Congress” gets through playing these bullshit PR games with Funky FEMA and the “Redneck Cross;” maybe we can end poverty…period!!! Sincerely, Hurricane Vincent – Poor People’s Campaign Groupie

West, managing partner in the law firm West and Associates and state senator representing District 23, succeeds Matrice Ellis Kirk who wrote the Foreword last year. Dennison, senior vice president of Texas Capital Bank and recognized business industry leader, authored the Introduction. “We are absolutely thrilled to have Royce and Effie on board to write the Foreword and Introduction,” said Carter. “They have been integral to the development of Dallas, and they both offer insightful perspectives on the significance of this publication which celebrates and highlights the achievements of African Americans in the city.” The 2017 edition will be released in mid-September. “I am delighted and honored to be asked to write the Foreword for the fourth edition,” said Senator West, who also was featured as one of the Most Influential in 2016. “Recognizing the achievements of African-Americans in Dallas is significant. Sharing my thoughts among those affiliated with Who’s Who In Black Dallas is very heart warming.” Dennison serves as Texas Capital Bank’s Director of Community Development and Corporate Responsibility, overseeing its Community Reinvestment Act initiatives and the administration of its compliance and charitable donation/grant program. She is also President and Chairman of the Texas Capital Community Development Corporation that makes commercial loans and equity investments in low to moderate income areas state wide. “I am thrilled to

My co-worker is a good for nothing ...
Ask Alma:
Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and Twitter
Dear Alma, During a team meeting at work, I came up with an idea to better assist our members and increase membership. Later while sitting in my cubicle, our boss came over and complimented my co-worker on submitting such a great idea. I was shocked, I couldn’t believe he took my idea to management and took the credit for it. When I asked him about it, he said it was all of our ideas combined that made the

suggestion a success and that’s just not true. I am so mad. Should I go to my boss and tell him the truth? I don’t want to be a part of his team anymore. Signed, Disgruntled Co-worker
Dear Disgruntled, It is what it is; don’t make a fuss. I promise you, you’ll have your day. This happens all the time, and leads to one of two scenarios. No. 1: This situation will come up again and they’ll look to him to lead the team. No. 2: Questions will be asked and they’ll look to him for answers. What I would do is better prepare myself. From now on, after making suggestions during a team meeting, you should come out and send an email reiterating
what you said. That’s right, add some “Loco” to your “Motion,” so you’ll be heard and seen the next go-round, otherwise you’ll look petty. This game is played all day, every day from corporate America to the family owned drugstore on Main Street. To ease your pain, I’ll tell you what my mama use to tell me: “God, don’t like ugly.” LOL. So trust me, your time will come. I like the Michelle Obama quote: “When they go low, we go high.” Keep that tucked in your back pocket. No doubt, on the back end of this two-faced co-worker coup, I can’t stress enough the importance of you taking the high road and continuing to be the best you can be. I know it doesn’t always look like it, but hard work and determination never goes unrewarded. Believe you me,
managers and supervisors are always eyeballing, watching when you least expect it. They know who’s doing what and what’s doing who. Truth is, we all strive for kudos, compliments, fist bumps and high fives, accompanying a big thanks from the boss. When that doesn’t happen, it’s cool. What I’ve found on the other side of 50 is, I was rewarded more when I didn’t get a pat on the back, no acknowledgement at all. It always worked out in the end. I’ve experienced and learned a conference room full of cheers is fleeting; it’s my confidence, fortitude and purpose that matters most. Those qualities will never leave you; they’ll always propel you to achieve your highest goals. Alma
