I am so very proud of Royle King Jr. He was a student at Lincoln Humanities and Communications Magnet High School when at the insistence of his teacher, Dr. Louie White, Royle applied to the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Communicators Urban Journalism Workshop. We had a stellar bunch of mostly young men and the students worked with professional journalists as they learned about the world of communications. In addition to a trip to the Texas Black Legislative Caucus Convention in Austin where the Honorable Ron Kirk and Rev. Zan W. Holmes, Jr. were featured speakers; we attended the National Association of Black Journalists regional Cheryl Smith conference in Baton Rouge, another journalism conference in Oklahoma City, and the NAACP Regional Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas. Students met and interviewed key figures and newsmakers, like then-NAACP President Kweisi Mfume, rapper-turnedminister Mase, veteran journalist George E. Curry, then-New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial, NAACP Regional Director Keryl Burgess Douglas, and key NABJ officers. Royle was an enthusiastic participant and a joy to be around. He was a favorite with the professionals Always respectful and full of personality, he embraced the messages from the professionals and it was clear he was benefiting from the experience. I love to give “nicknames” and Royle had two. I affectionately called him “Dr. King” and I told him that if he acted up, he would know it because then I called him, “Burger King!” I was pleased when he decided to attend my alma mater, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Sure there was the influence from the other A&M, Prairie View; but the orange and green reigned supreme over the purple and gold and he was off to Tallahassee. He did, however, get to make his Dad proud by wearing the purple and gold of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. -- initiated in the Spring of 2007. Every year I return to my alma mater for Homecoming and Royle always manages to find me and spend a little time and this year’s Homecoming was no different. Earlier this month I traveled to Tallahassee as not only FAMU celebrated its 125th anniversary, but the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was celebrating its 75th anniversary. I had to be in attendance for these historic milestones of two institutions that are great significance to me! During my visit this year, Royle, who is now a graduate and working at the local ABC affiliate, WTXL-TV, asked me out to dinner. The ideal gentleman, Royle picked me up, opened all doors and displayed the home training that had been instilled in him as a child. We had a lovely dinner at the Longhorn Restaurant and Royle filled me in on his future plans. The next day, his fraternity’s graduate chapter would be holding its annual Achievement Week Brunch and since I was staying over, I accepted Royle’s invitation to attend. It was an enjoyable event visiting with the mother and brother of Trayvon Martin, Sybrina and Jarvis Fulton; their attorney Benjamin Crump; and keynote Thomas Dortch, Jr., who was instrumental in helping establish the Dallas Metroplex Council of Black Alumni Associations in Dallas. It was great hearing Atty. Crump, who was the outgoing president of the Chi Omega Chapter, praising Royle, especially for his work with the youth group, the Lamp Lighters. After the Fultons were honored as Citizens of the Year, Royle’s name was called for the Service Award. I beamed with pride as I listened to his acceptance speech. The icing on the cake, however, was when it came time to install the newly-elected officers and Royle was among the group. This was important to me because it is so important to honor commitments and when he joined the organization, he made a commitment for life so it was great to see that in addition to making the transition to the graduate chapter, the former basileus/ president of his undergraduate chapter was also taking a leadership role. Royle is one of the many young men and women who I have had the opportunity to mentor over the years. Some love me and some probably hate me, but they remember me so maybe they remember some of the lessons I shared as I attempted to not only prepare them for a career as a journalist but also further impress upon them the valuable lessons their parents tried to instill in them. I expect to keep hearing great things from Royle King Jr. and I know his parents are so proud of him. He understands the importance of lifting as he climbs and he is an honorable young man. Too often the headlines scream of dysfunction, death, violence despair and disparaging statistics when referencing young black men. The headlines should be just as large when saluting positive black men, like Royle King Jr. Royle Sr. and Mary did good!

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

GIVING THANKS As we gather with friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving, my thoughts have not left those on the Marc H. Morial East Coast that were affected by Hurricane Sandy. If you or your loved ones are still recovering, my thoughts and prayers are with you. The massive rebuilding effort is far from over – but I believe there is still reason to give thanks today. One of America's greatest strengths is the ability to come together as a country and as a community in times of crisis. I know this because I've seen it before. I was on the ground in the days after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005. I don't need to tell you about the devastation that urban communities suffered that day – or about the subsequent years of rebuilding that ensued so families could return to their lives. National Urban League was there to help individuals and families recover from Katrina, and we will be there again – for as long as it takes – to help urban communities bounce back from Sandy's effects. Last week, the National Urban League Walgreens Wellness Bus made a special trip from Florida to NYC to reach out to our neighbors affected by this historic superstorm. My colleagues joined me in Coney Island to distribute food, clothing, blankets, and other basic necessities to thousands of people affected by Hurricane Sandy. This is the work you help us do every day through your generosity and commitment to uplifting urban communities. This is why I have so very much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving. JACKSON: Obama voters want jobs, better cities Elections have consequences. President Barack Obama’s stunning reelection Rev. Jesse Jackson victory came dramatically from the same emerging majority coalition — a rainbow coalition — that brought him to the presidency in 2008. At its heart are minorities, young people, single women and union households. What do they want? These voters reflect America’s diversity. But they share one thing in common: They were the hardest hit by the recession and have had the hardest time recovering from it. The president’s vote directly tracked income levels. He won a large majority of those making less than $50,000 a year and lost a majority of those making more. Romney was clearly the candidate of the 1 percent. Obama was the candidate of middle-, working-class and poor Americans; those in the middle class and those aspiring to get there. They want action on jobs. They want action on wages, with overwhelming support for raising the minimum wage. They want investment in education and opportunity, so their children can get a good public education and aﬀord to go to college. They want high-speed rail public transportation — which was rejected by the governors in New Jersey, Florida

and Wisconsin — put back on the table. We can connect the jobs to where people live. We can make the steel, make the rail, lay the rail. The cost of energy-eﬃcient transportation will reap rewards. We’ll all benefit and be more secure.

infrastructure — aging sewers, inadequate and costly mass transit, vulnerable electric grids, underfunded schools and inadequate public parks and programs. They need aﬀordable housing that is energy-eﬃcient. They need jobs desperately.

These are the most vulnerable of Americans, so when Washington talks about a deficit agreement, these Americans will have clear priorities. Like the vast majority of Americans, they want Social Security and Medicare protected, not cut.

The president’s real mandate — and his real opportunity — is to lay out a plan for revitalizing our cities. This will help get the economy going and put people to work. It will decrease poverty, despair and the hopelessness that feeds drugs and depression. And as people go to work, they start paying taxes and stop collecting unemployment insurance — and that helps bring deficits down.

An election night poll by Campaign for America’s Future and Democracy Corps found that 62 percent of voters would find cuts in Social Security benefits unacceptable as part of a deficit agreement, and 79 percent would oppose cuts in Medicare benefits.

Clearly, the big issues of poverty, racial disparity, gender inequality and violence will not go away on their own. We must drive them away with opportunities of hope as the live alternatives to hurt, hatred and despair. The president’s voters want jobs, not cuts in vital programs. They want a plan to rebuild our cities — not a plan to cut vital security programs and continue to starve vital investments in our cities.

They support increasing taxes on the rich, as do a majority of voters. They join the stunning 72 percent of voters who would find unacceptable cuts in domestic discretionary spending such as “education, child nutrition, and worker training and disease control.” They stand with the 75 percent who would find unacceptable deep across-theboard cuts that don’t protect programs for “infants, poor children, schools and college aid.”

These voters have stood up for the president, now the president has a clear mandate to stand up for them. Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr. is an American civil rights activist and Baptist minister. He was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988 and served as a shadow U.S. Senator for the District of Columbia from 1991 to 1997.

Obama’s majority came significantly from our cities. What do urban residents need? They need a plan to rebuild America’s cities. They suﬀer from a decrepit and outmoded

Congressman Jackson’s resignation letter In 1995, when I was first elected to the House of Representatives I came to Washington with a singular purpose — to serve the constituents of the Second District of Illinois. During that time for seventeen years I have traveled on a journey with the people of the Second District of Illinois, and with their unwavering support we have worked together to transform what once was an underdeveloped and nearly forgotten South Side of Chicago. Along this journey we have accomplished much. We have built new train stations, water towers, and emergency rooms. We have brought affordable housing, community centers and healthcare clinics to those that need it most. In all, nearly a billion dollars of infrastructure and community improvement has been made on the South Side of Chicago and thousands of new jobs have been created. We began this journey by promising fresh water for the people of Ford Heights and a new airport that would employ upon completion 300,000 people. Today the people of Ford Heights have fresh water and sitting on the Governor’s desk 400,000,000 proposal for an airport that

will cost the taxpayers nothing and only awaits the Governor’s commitment to build it. And while our journey to strengthen communities and provide a better future for our children will continue, I know that together we have made the Second District of Illinois a better place. For seventeen years I have given 100 percent of my time, energy, and life to public service. However, over the past several months, as my health has deteriorated, my ability to serve the constituents of my district has continued to diminish. Against the recommendations of my doctors, I had hoped and tried to return to Washington and continue working on the issues that matter most to the people of the Second District. I know now that will not be possible. The constituents of the Second District deserve a full-time legislator in

Washington, something I cannot be for the foreseeable future. My health issues and treatment regimen have been incompatible with service in the House of Representatives. Therefore, it is with great regret that I hereby resign as a member of the United States House of Representatives, effective today, in order to focus on restoring my health. During this journey I have made my fair share of mistakes. I am aware of the ongoing federal investigation into my activities and am doing my best to address the situation responsibly, cooperate with the investigators, and accept responsibility for my mistakes, for they are my mistakes and mine alone. None of us is immune from our share of shortcomings or human frailties and I pray that I will be remembered for

what I did right. It has been a profound honor to serve the constituents of Illinois’s Second Congressional District and I thank them for their patience, their words of support and prayers during what has been, and what will continue to be a very trying time for me and my family. I also thank my colleagues and staff for supporting me and the citizens of my district over the past several months. I am proud to have worked alongside each of them over these many years. I know that our work and accomplishments will have a lasting positive impact on our community and our nation. With optimism and hope I look forward to the day when my treatment is complete and my health improves. I will truly miss serving as a Member of Congress and I will never be able to fully express my gratitude to the people of Chicago, and her Southland for granting me the opportunity to serve them for 17 wonderful years. Davis delivers powerful message on gender parity

Award-winning actress and gender in media activist Geena Davis recently delivered the keynote address at the 27th annual Dallas Women’s Foundation Luncheon, presented by U.S. Trust. Ms. Davis’ inspirational and informative message focused on gender equality and the portrayal of women and girls in the media. The event, held on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the Hilton Anatole, is the largest annual fundraiser for the Dallas Women’s Foundation (DWF), which over the past 27 years has invested more than $19 million in programs benefiting women and girls and the greater community. “Geena Davis applies her considerable talents not only to portraying empowered women on screen, but also to improving gender portrayals in the media that influence young minds and therefore the future of our culture and our communities,” said Roslyn Dawson Thompson, president and CEO of Dallas Women’s Foundation. Best known for her roles in major motion pictures such as “A League of Their Own,” “Thelma & Louise” and “The Accidental Tourist,” Davis broke barriers with her award-winning portrayal of the President of the United States in the ABC show “Commander in Chief.” Ms. Davis said she initially wanted to play the character, Louise, in “Thelma & Louise” until the director asked her to play Thelma – a role that later earned her Academy and Golden Globe Award nominations in 1992 for best actress. Ms. Davis also won an Academy Award in 1989 for best supporting role by an actress in “The Accidental Tourist” and a Golden Globe nomination in 1993 for best actress for her portrayal of baseball phenomenon Dottie Hinson in “A League of Their Own.” “Thelma and Louise changed the course of my life,” said Geena Davis, actress and activist. “People had no PAGE 8

idea the nerve it would strike. How few opportunities we give women to come out of a movie feeling empowered.” In addition to her successful acting career, Ms. Davis is a passionate advocate for gender equality in the media. She is the founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and its programming arm, “See Jane,” which engages film and television creators to dramatically increase the percentage of female characters and reduce gender stereotyping in media made for children 11 and under. While watching children's entertainment with her young daughter, Ms. Davis was astounded by the scarcity of female characters. Motivated to take action, she started looking at children’s programming and G-rated films closely, observing how few female characters there were. As a result of her analysis, Davis concluded the more hours a girl watches (movies and television), the fewer options she feels she has in life, while the more hours a boy watches, the more sexist he is likely to become.

According to thegeenadavisinstitute.org, Davis commissioned the largest research project on gender in film and television ever undertaken, conducted by Dr. Stacy Smith at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism. The research confirmed the disparity she observed: in family films, there is only one female character for every three male characters and in crowd scenes, only 17 percent of the characters are female. Ms. Davis, a self-proclaimed data head, said the percentage (17 percent) of females in media has been the same since 1946. “Bewitched” and “I Dream of Jeannie” were the television shows with female leading roles that Davis says she watched as a child. “They were characters who had to sit on their abilities so as not to upset their men.

She mentioned the glaring omission of females from critical occupational movie roles and specifically highlighted the fact that there are no female film roles with STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) jobs. “We need to add women in all sectors of society,” Davis said. Born Virginia Elizabeth Davis, Geena Davis, 56, has achieved remarkable success in a variety of endeavors. In addition to being an award-winning actress and a tireless advocate for women and girls, she is a world-class athlete. Standing six-feet tall, at age 41 the attractive former model took up archery and two years later qualified for !

the U.S. Olympic trials. At one time, Ms. Davis was nationally ranked as the 13th best archer in the country. A native of Wareham, Massachusetts, the Boston University graduate is also a member of the genius society Mensa. During the luncheon, Dallas Women’s Foundation also recognized the contributions of two of the region’s leaders in philanthropy by and for women. The organization presented the annual Power of The Purse® Philanthropist Award to Joy S. Mankoff and the Power Of The Purse® Wealth Advisor Award to Philip B. Cubeta. Ms. Mankoff is one of DWF’s 19 founders and an active member of the foundation’s Advisory Council. Mr. Cubeta is the Sallie B. and William B. Wallace Chair in Philanthropy at The American College. The Power of the Purse® Philanthropist Award is given annually to a woman who has made a significant difference in women’s lives through charitable contributions and provided leadership and support of women’s issues. Former honorees have included Catalina E. Garcia, M.D., Cecilia G. Boone, Serena Connelly, Helen LaKelly Hunt, Caren Prothro and Nancy Tartaglino Richards. Ifill to head Legal Defense Fund The Board of Directors of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) has selected Sherrilyn Ifill as President and DirectorCounsel, effective January 2013. For over 70 years, LDF has carried out its mission through advocacy, policy development and impact litigation to expand political participation, fight injustice in the criminal justice system, broaden the avenues of educational opportunity, defend economic freedoms, and further the nomination and appointment of fairminded and diverse judges. We believe Sherrilyn Ifill is extraordinarily well suited to carry the mantle forward. With her background and experiences, Sherrilyn brings an array of important skills to LDF's already strong staff. A civil rights scholar, litigator, author, philanthropist, and civic leader, Sherrilyn is a longtime member of the LDF family. Early in her career, she served as assistant counsel in LDF's New York office where she litigated voting rights cases, including the landmark Voting Rights Act case Houston Lawyers' Association v. Attorney General of Texas. In 1993, Sherrilyn joined the faculty of the University Maryland, Francis King Carey School of Law, where she continued to litigate and consult on a broad and diverse range of civil rights cases, while grooming the next generation of civil rights lawyers. In addition to teaching in the classroom, Ifill launched several innovative legal clinics while at Maryland Law School, including an environmental justice clinic, and one of the first legal clinics in the nation focused on the legal rights of ex-offenders. She is a respected civil rights strategist and public intellectual whose writings, speeches and media appearances enrich public debate about a range of civil rights issues. A critically acclaimed author, her book On the Courthouse Lawn: Confronting the Legacy of Lynching in the 21st Century, reflects her lifelong engagement in, and analysis of, race in American life. She is an active and respected civic leader in the city of Baltimore. For the past two years, Ifill has served as the chair of the U.S. Programs board of the Open Society Foundations, one of the largest philanthropic supporters of civil rights and social justice organizations in the country. Sherrilyn brings to this position visionary leadership, keen intellect, an unwavering commitment to social justice, an esteemed reputation, and a deep understanding of LDF's legacy. We look forward to working with her at the helm as LDF continues the fight for racial justice in the 21st century.
