Message to the People...
INSIDE I MESSENGER December 14, 2012
As the world deals with more and more natural disasters, caused by global warming, we’re also dealing with our share of disasters orchestrated by what appears to be tormented or troubled individuals. At least that is how the gunman is being described. The 20-year-old, who was initially identified as his 24-year-old brother, Ryan, because he was carrying his brother’s identification, walked into a Newtown Connecticut elementary school and opened fire.
IMAJ 5
His spree ended with a death toll of 28; most of whom were children between the ages of 5 and 10. Among the casualties was his mother, who worked at the school. For hours on end there was non stop coverage of the tragedy. In addition to a statement from President Barack Obama, there was the unanswered question that was on the minds of many: why?
Cheryl Smith
There are so many other questions and you can’t help but think back over all of the shootings that have occurred recently. Places where people are used to going and feeling safe, like to shopping malls, movie theaters and schools have become ground zero for assaults.
Julianne Malveaux 6
No one can imagine the emotions of the parents who received word of the massacre and rushed to the scene, prayerful that their children had survived. Instead of looking forward to opening presents on Christmas Day, or spending time with family members during the holidays, these families will be grieving. They are not alone.
ROLLING OUT Mirror Mirror Awards 13
So many have been touched by yet another tragedy. Everyone should be in prayer. I know I am. Just thinking about the young boys and girls who never had a chance to reach their fullest potential is enough to bring tears to the eyes of the “strongest” man and woman. Some have wondered whether the shooter’s mother saw her son before he fired at her. I listened as psychologists gave their professional thoughts and opinions about the shooting and the shooter. In comparing the Connecticut shooter with others, some speculated about whether shooters want to have their names in headlines or uttered by the president. Some even surmised that there are other people out in the world who might get “turned on” by the attention the shooter gets and decide to go out and do something just as sick. We know there are too many guns on the streets and we also know that PEOPLE WITH GUNS KILL. So do we lobby for gun control? Do we blame drugs? How do we stop the madness? Folks are calling the recent shooting part of an epidemic. The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary has the distinction of topping the list of most violent crimes. Earlier this year, the FBI released numbers that show a decrease in violent crimes but an increase in gun ownership. The Connecticut shooter was heavily armed.
Golden Gate Funeral Home 17
In coming days, as is always the case after tragedies such as the one today, there will be discussions about gun control, restrictions and protecting our citizens. We want to feel safe. We need to feel safe. Unfortunately we find ourselves feeling as though we are in a nation where it is becoming more and more commonplace for someone to go on a shooting rampage. That is not a good feeling. This is America.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...
Holiday scams By Dr. Julianne Malveaux Okay, I’ll admit it. I am truly the Grinch who wanted to steal Christmas. It takes me until about December 23 to get in the spirit, and I only feel obligated to find gifts for children and close family. I like to give, which is why I share with a few charities that are close to me. And I like to connect, which is why I have a greeting card ritual. But all this crazy frenzy after Thanksgiving, before Christmas sale stuff truly repels me. And while I don’t want to put a damper on anybody’s sprit, I want to say that this is the season to be careful. After all, we live in a consumer society. When we spend, other people get paid. When we spend other people are blessed. But if you spend what you don’t have then you are sliding down your own fiscal cliff, and you won’t have a pillow to protect you. The average American will spend about $900 this year on Christmas gifts and toys, but that means that half will spend more. ‘Tis the season to be careful. Some of the biggest scams come from charities. They will reach you through email, snail mail, and even text mail. They may ask for a little or a lot. You’ve got to ask where your money is going. Some organizations take as much as 80 percent of your gift, which means that the people you want to help get just 20 percent of your money. Before you send a penny, ask the right questions. Too many charities lean on this time of year to make their money, but if the whole truth is told, they are really leaning on this time of year to make a living. Check these folks out online, and look for their annual reports. If their overhead is more than 15 percent, walk on by. Another scam is the garbled name scam. You may think you are giving to a worthy program, such as the Police Athletic League, only to find that you are giving to the non-registered Police Athletic Program. You may think you are giving to an African American cause, only to find that a garbled name takes you someplace else. Americans want to give, and African Americans are among the most generous, based on the percent of income we give. But give with your head and not with your heart, and ask solicitors important questions. One of the other scams is the sale scam. If you buy it now, you will get a sale that will never, ever, in your lifetime be replicated. So standing line all night for the 52 foot TV for $239, while the store has only ten. Find some furniture you like only to be told it is 50 percent off today, but not tomorrow. Retailers are playing on your greed and your panic. If you take your time, you might find an even better deal. And if seems too good to be true, it is. Scruffy little children will come to your door this time of year, asking for money for their church, for magazine subscriptions, for all form of causes. You may want to slip the child a few pennies, but please know they aren’t going to make more than that with the magazine subscription scam, or with the church solicitation. In fact, most churches run their own solicitations, PAGE 6

American Legacy Movement: Please, stop calling me "Black" The label "black" has taken its toll! And we do not want American children to continue living like this. This plea goes out on behalf of those with slave blood in us, as well as our supporters. We believe America is comprised of compassionate people who will empathize with this condition after being presented facts about vast subliminal circumstances suffered today. American Blacks do not benefit from being placed into this so called bucket of "Who's Black in America." It may sound like a fun label, solely based on the beauty of skin color and media innocence, but you would have a drastically different outlook on being labeled "black" if your family was actually forced to survive in a different mindset, many of whom are arrested or even killed every day! African Americans migrated, but American Blacks were invented as a byproduct of legalized Slavery and subsequent segregation. Our nationality, other than American, is not documented. It pains many to see the current living condition for American Black children [as a demographic], and we have decided to elevate this awareness as a nation. The "one-drop rule" is a term that was used in America for the social classification of those ethnic groups mixed with "one drop of black blood". The principle of "blackness" was a form of outcast for children of a
mixed union between descendants of Slavery and other ethnic groups. The "one-drop rule" was not adopted as law until the 20th century, such as Virginia in the Racial Integrity Act of 1924 which followed passage
so maybe ask for the name of the church and call them before you give a donation. I suppose I am the Grinch because I am dismayed that our holiday season, that supposedly celebrates the birth of the Christ child has turned into a commercial orgy with people shopping for a full five weeks. It has also turned into a solicitation orgy with almost every organization you
have ever known asking for end of year contribution. In the middle of all this drama, the purpose of the holiday is swallowed. I am weary of seeing frenzied faces anxious for the next sale, or children (and grown folks) defining their worth by what goodies they pick up. I am weary of the folks who go into crazy debt to prove a point, to buy affection, to shower folks with gifts when they
of similar laws in other states. Most people were absorbed into their majority culture based simply on appearance. If we looked at the family tree of early Americans, there are many American Blacks with more American Whites in their ancestry but was identified as "colored" based on the fact that their skin contained color, scientifically known as melanin. Using "Black and White" to define 2012 Americans is no more than modern day segregation and should be outlawed going forward. We are tired of political and business leaders viewing all "African/
Americans" into as one large category called "Black" despite our drastically different origins. The needs of an individual are grounded in origin, based on environmental and historical factors. African Americans and American Blacks originate from two different locations, from an immigration perspective, and American Blacks have ended up on the losing end of that category, all the way around. American Blacks are no longer passively accepting hostile treatment from immigrant coworkers and business owners when, in fact, we represent the foundation of American infrastructure which they use [faithfully] to build wealth for their family and send earnings back to their respective countries. American Black family legacy is tied up in an historical labor force of African immigrants forced to work for free. American Legacy Movement will establish Regional Leaders responsible for meeting with subgroups and collecting suggestions framed in a simple process with directives that would facilitate collecting the best ideas across our nation. The compilation of information will be presented for proposed legislation, as necessary. Please join at www.AmericanLegacyMovement.co m Sophia White, Founder should shower them with love. Can we be careful with our wallets and open with our hearts? I hope that we will all remember and embrace the meaning of Christmas and not the crassness of consumerism. Hitchcock -
DECEMBER 14, 2012
Three reels
Bradfield By Jamille Bradfield I Messenger Film Critic and Entertainment Writer
Have you ever watched a movie and wanted to get inside of the film director’s mind to see what lies beneath his or her creative genius? Well wonder no more. Good evening. Welcome to a critical analysis of FOX Searchlight Pictures’ latest release — HITCHCOCK. Directed by Sacha Ger vasi, HITCHCOCK stars Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins as master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock, fellow Oscar winner Helen Mirren as Hitchcock’s wife and writing partner Alma Reville, and Scarlett Johansson as PSYCHO leading actress Janet Leigh. HITCHCOCK tells the real-life story of the famous filmmaker’s inspiration behind his 1960 horror/ thriller, PSYCHO, and the many obstacles he faced trying to bring the troubled production to the big screen. The film also reveals Hitchcock’s uncomfortably disturbing fascination with Ed Gein, the reallife serial killer/body snatcher who ser ved as the inspiration for P S YC H O ’s No r m a n B a t e s character. Fellow villains Hannibal Lecter in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and Leatherface in TEXAS C H A I N S AW MASSACRE were also based on Gein. The film opens with an eerie scene of Ed Gein bashing his brother’s head in with a shovel just outside of his farmhouse in Wisconsin, and then pans to Alfred Hitchcock pro viding a witty narration of events in the same manner popularized by his “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” television series (1955-1961). Cut to Hollywood. Fresh off of his back-to-back box office successes, NORTH BY NORTHWEST and VERTIGO, Hitchcock is being showered with praise and accolades by media and bigwigs at Paramount Pictures when he begins contemplating concepts for his next big film. PAGE 9
!
He seems to be running into a dead end (no pun intended) until he stumbles upon a ripped right out of the headlines novel about Ed Gein’s horrific crimes, titled Psycho, by Robert Bloch. Up o n r e a d i n g t h e b o o k , Hitchcock decides his next project will be based on Bloch’s novel and immediately orders his staff to purchase every copy of the book in print to prevent any spoiler alerts for potential moviegoers. So, Hitchcock has discovered his next big hit. Time to get to work, right? Wrong. Up until this point, the American horror film genre played it pretty safe in terms of graphic violence. It had mastered the art of leaving the implied act of m u r d e r t o t h e v i e w e r ’s imagination. Ho w e v e r, w h e n H i t c h c o c k approached Paramount Pictures about funding the film, they were uneasy about backing such
gruesome images and ultimately told Hitchcock that they would not fund the project, but if he could find another funding source, they would be willing to distribute the film, pending approvals by the censors. After several unsuccessful attempts to secure outside funding, Hitchcock, who is hellbent on making PSYCHO, turns to his wife and writing partner, Alma Reville, to enlist her support to self-fund the risky project to the tune of $800,000. While that budget is a drop in the bucket in today’s film production market, in 1960, $800,000 was a lot of money. In true stand by your man fashion, Reville, knowing they could very well lose their house if the film flops, gives her stamp of approval, and Hitchcock writes a check to produce the film. The biographical drama follows the production of PSYCHO from !
casting the young, boy-next-door charmer Anthony Perkins (James D’Arcy) as lead character Norman Bates and Janet Leigh (Scarlett Johansson) as leading lady Marion Crane. It is here that we get a glimpse into Hitchcock’s fixation on young, curvy, blond starlets and Alma’s extraordinary degree of tolerance with his flirting. While HITCHCOCK writers John J. McLaughlin (screenplay) a n d S te p h e n Re b e l l o ( b o o k ) intrigue the audience with the main plot centered around bringing PSYCHO to life on the big screen, the subplot about HITCHCOCK’S obsession with Ed Gein to the extent that he fantasizes about having conversations with the homicidal maniac, was seemingly an unnecessary sidebar. Perhaps it was included to highlight Alfred Hitchcock’s own bizarre character flaws. Nevertheless, the primary subplot about the relationship between our protagonist and his wife provided more than enough conflict on its own. Inevitably, after a few major bumps in the road, including production temporarily grinding to a halt when Hitchcock becomes ill, PSYCHO is finally completed and ready for its theatrical release. D u r i n g t h e f i l m’s p r e m i e r e , Hitchcock stands outside the theater, eagerly awaiting a sign of the film’s success (or failure) — the a u d i e n c e ’s r e a c t i o n t o t h e controversial, climatic shower scene. Of course, since this is a biography, we already know how the story ends and whether or not Hitchcock’s investment was worth the risk. Ho p k i n s and M i r r e n’s translations of these real-life characters are excellent performance-wise, however supporting performances by Johansson, Jessica Biel (as Vera Miles) and Danny Huston (as Whitfield Cook) are just fair to middling. With a r unning time of 98 minutes, HITCHCOCK, in theaters now, is rated PG-13 for some violent images, sexual content and thematic material.

Ask Gwen My wife left me but I want her back! Dear Gwendolyn: This is the problem: I met my wife on line. After only three months into our marriage, she left me. I had no idea she was unhappy. I came home from work and she had left me a note explaining she made a mistake. The people on my job were giving us a huge wedding party at the office. I had to let them know to cancel the party. My wife was gone. Although I know this is bad, but I want her back. How can I convince her to think about our marriage and return? Andrew Dear Andrew:
Why would you want her to return? Man, you are going to have to experience the hurt that most people go through at least once in their lifetime. The way you feel about her may never change, but you do not need to spend another day in this marriage. The years move swiftly and too often people in love are never able to realize their mistake until they are old, broke down, confused in the head, bones hurting, hearing bad, and heart remains the same – love struck but beats a little slower. Robert, meeting online is not good no matter how many wonderful stories you hear. Usually, whatever a person online tells you, he/she are not telling you the truth. Most online is nothing but lonely people meeting lonely people. Therefore, face up to the realization that even if she later realizes she made a mistake by leaving, you are making a mistake — in wanting her back. DENMICRO.COM 1IMALL.COM delivers shopping mall to Denny’s Franchisees Los Angeles, CA -- While the great majority of Denny's locations have FREE WiFi, still very few of the Denny's Franchisees have launched their Denny's Franchisee Microsites. 1iMALL.COM seeks to change that. Bryan Franklin, founder of 1iMALL.COM met with long-time Denny's and Burger King Franchisee, Mr. Ron Smothers, to share information about his trademarked internet based franchise model called The 800 Club (TM). As usual, Bryan asked Mr. Smothers the standard question he asks all business people: "What is it that you want more of?" The most common answers are TIME and MONEY. Bryan was not surprised, then, that Mr. Smother said, "MONEY". !
"With the economy the way it is, most of us Franchisees need to look at other ways to generate revenue and increase our profit," said Mr. Smothers. And thus the MONEY journey began. Bryan and Mr. Smothers contacted Denny's Corporate to share their desire to add the 1iMALL.COM virtual shopping mall to Mr. Smothers' newly established www.CrenshawDennys.com microsite and the rest, as they say, is history. When visiting CrenshawDennys.com, customers will be greeted with the following statement: "Mr. Ron Smothers, Denny's Franchisee, would like to invite you to visit our virtual shopping mall to see some wonderful deals." Additionally, the Denny's Staff will circle the website url on the receipt and say, "visit our Shopping Mall". Mr. Smothers is all set to share in the memberships and shopping commission. This 1iMALL.COM internet shopping mall model is non-exclusive to Denny's and can be implemented for any business. !

“…Don’t Let The Bed Bugs Bite” with Aromatherapy
“Night, night, sleep tight; don’t let the bedbugs bite” is an old adage based on bugs that hide during the day in nooks and crannies in the bedroom and come out at night. At one time, they had been virtually eliminated in the United States, but have recently reappeared. The reappearance has been in hotels, dormitories, apartments, health care facilities and private homes. The resurgence can be attributed to factors such as increased international travel, and the change in available pesticides. Bedbugs were a widespread pest until mid-1940, when pesticides containing DDT and other broadspectrum, long-lasting chemicals were introduced. These chemicals were highly effective against many kinds of pests, and nearly eradicated the bedbug. Unfortunately, these were also extremely dangerous to humans and could no longer be used. Fortunately, aromatherapy provides a natural approach to the problem. There

are several essential oils that are effective against bedbugs. The most popular are lavender and eucalyptus used either individually or combined to repel bedbugs. Washing bed linen with soap and hot water will kill bedbugs on contact. Misting the mattress, pillows, and bed linen with the right essential oils will repel bedbugs as well as create a cleansed aromatic atmosphere perfect for sleeping. As with all essential oils, a few drops go a long way, so be careful when making ‘homemade’ blends. When unsure, it is always best to consult a Certified Aromatherapist. Bedbugs feed on human blood. The bite of the bedbug can result in itchy wheals, bumps, or small scratches on the skin. They cannot fly, nor do they carry disease. Nevertheless, bedbugs are nuisances that can be effectively dealt with through aromatherapy. In the event of a bite, apply a drop of lavender directly to the affected area, to disinfect and facilitate rapid healing. Travel (domestic and international) is the primary means of proliferation of the bedbug. Therefore, the traveler is strongly encouraged to mist all bed linen upon arrival to hotels, condos, and other forms of temporary housing with lavender and/or eucalyptus. Treat luggage with a mist before opening and before repacking to avoid bringing them back home.

TLC is ready to put “fun” back into funeral The network has ordered a special/ backdoor pilot, Best Funeral Ever, that goes behind-the-scenes of a unconventional funeral parlor. At the Golden Gate Funeral Home, Dallasbased funeral director John Beckwith, Jr. works with the families to create a central theme for a memorial and then throws a wild party. Examples include a Christmas-inspired funeral complete with reindeer, elves and snow, and a singer known for his famous rib sauce jingle remembered at a BBQ-themed funeral — including live pigs, praise dancers, and a BBQ sauce fountain where loved ones dip a ceremonious rib to say goodbye. “We’re going to make these families extremely happy at the worst moments of their lives,” Beckwith says. The special airs the day after Christmas, Dec. 26, and is produced by Park Slope Productions.

In our library "THE BIBLICAL JOURNEY OF SLAVERY: FROM EGYPT TO THE AMERICAS"
(BlackNews.com) -- The Biblical Journey of Slavery: From Egypt to the Americas by Lynette Bani presents the narrative of a family that began in ancient Mesopotamia, and the enormous impact that centuries of enslavement and disbursement around the globe have had on their descendants, Diaspora Africans. As the story traces the movement of this group of people through various world powers and across geographic regions, the reader is provided with insights into the rich history and culture of this group that have been obscured by the systematic dismantling of the truth of their past. Africans of the Diaspora must learn about their past ancestry, because that knowledge is knowledge of self, aecting the way in which they think and the way in which they behave in relation to their own people. order to understand the present, one must look to the past, for the present is the result of past establishments on which decisions for the future were made. These are the words of the prophet Moses, as recorded in Scripture: "And [YHWH ] will bring you again into Egypt with ships ... and there you shall be sold unto your enemies for bond men and bond women..." (Deut. 28:68) The Atlantic Slave Trade was the fulfillment of this prophecy. The account presented in The Biblical Journey of Slavery will visit ancient lands and show from maps, illustrations and undeniable evidence, episodes that connect Africans of the Diaspora to their ancestral heritage that should have shaped their world. "The sugar and cotton industries aected the economy of virtually every nation on earth. Forty slave factories were set up on the African coast to handle the demand for "Black gold" (Captured Africans)". The nations who were the main players in the trade were Portugal, The Netherlands, Spain, France, Britain and Anglo America ... Perhaps this was the largest combined commercial enterprise of nations ever. The intent of this writing is to change the way in which the world views Africans of the Diaspora and the way Diaspora Africans view themselves. The information provided will show where millions originated before there was a continent called Africa. The question "WHO AM I" is answered with clarity, ending the dilemma of identity for even the very educated, and the destructive anger that some mete out against brother and self.
