Senator West says budget surplus should address state's needs
billion in general revenue in its coffers, more than enough to cover expenses over the 2014-15 budget cycle. Needless to say this comes as great news, but the $101.4 billion question is how Texas will spend its newfound riches. The current estimate exceeds the roughly $81 billion the Legislature established for the current 2012-13 biennium by 12.4 percent, with some $96.2 billion to be collected in taxes and fees. Texas consumers are responsible for 64 percent of those revenues which arrived via the sales tax; which is the state's chief source of funding.
AUSTIN -- This week, State Comptroller Susan Combs released the state's biennial budget revenue estimate as proscribed by the Texas Constitution. Its results confirmed that Texas has truly emerged from the tough fiscal times brought to bear by the Great Recession. The comptroller announced that Texas will have an estimated $101.4
PAGE 2
!
That is a fact that is not likely to ever change, given that one of Texas' selling points in attracting thousands of new residents each week is that it has no state income tax. But since so much of our income comes from Texas households, it seems only fair that some of those resources should be reinvested in the citizens who will help propel the Texas economy into an even more prosperous future.
When you add in another projected $112 billion in dedicated revenue and federal funds, our All-Funds total for 2014-15 should total some $208 billion. The comptroller also announced that by the end of fiscal 2013, the economic stabilization fund - aka the Rainy Day Fund - should have some $8.8 billion tucked away. It is estimated that by the end of FY15, that the Rainy Day Fund will have grown to $11.8 billion. But how will everyday Texans fare? Last Session, we decided that it would be better to cut education funding by more than $5 billion than to consider new revenue. We as state budget writers and policy makers also chose not to fund Medicaid in the current budget and instead pushed forward to now, a $4.7 billion tab. That balance forward will be settled by the 83rd Legislature which in turn, sheds doubt as to whether education cuts will be restored.
!
JANUARY 11, 2013
Some state leaders have already said no. I agree with Gov. Perry, who in his address to the Senate on opening day, said that we should pay our bills when they come due. I also agree with him that dedicated funds built from fees collected from citizens should be spent for specific reasons should be used for their intended purposes. My track record will show that education has been and is my emphasis for young Texas past, present and future. So when you ask how revenue in excess of expenses should be allocated, restoring funding cuts to public schools is at the top of my list. And since education does not end with grade 12, let's also fulfill the promise we made to college students by fully supporting Texas GRANTS. There's no doubt that our future is tied to an educated workforce and turning our backs on the needs of tomorrow does not delay what's on the horizon. We can address it now, or face a less promising future later.

Little did I know that the decisions I made as a young sophomore on the campus of Florida A&M University would have such an impact on me 35 years later. I am beaming with so much pride as I prepare to celebrate the founding of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Founded on the campus of Howard University on January 13, 1913, Delta Sigma Theta is one of the premiere organizations in this country, with members living and making an impact around the world. Cheryl Smith Some of the most influential women in the world are members of Delta Sigma Theta. Equally important to me is the realization that the number of friends and relationships that I have or hold dear is greatly increased because of Delta Sigma Theta. Wherever I go in the world, Delta’s influence is there and I am never alone. The bond of Delta is undeniably strong and true. While my experience began with my 33 line sisters and the 15-20 who oversaw the process; over the years I have been welcomed with open arms, just by mentioning that I, too, am a Delta! Later this year the Elusive Ladies will be gathering to celebrate our 35th and we will take time to reflect on one who made the transition last year, Donna Charles. When we’re together, it’s just like we’re back on FAMU’s campus. Sure we’re older and wiser, but even more important is the strong love and care that is exhibited. These women have seen the good, bad, ugly, silly, funny, cool, not- so cool, (well you get the picture), of Cheryl Smith and if anything our love has grown stronger, withstanding the tests of time! The Elusive Ladies join the ranks of Delta women who are survivors, innovators, movers, shakers, builders, creators and more; who take out time to give back, to lift as we climb. It takes visionary leadership to form an organization like Delta Sigma Theta. The 22 valiant women were focused on community service and bettering conditions for our people and ultimately the world. Now as we stand on the threshold of a century, I want to say thanks to the Founders of this great organization who, in tougher times, put forth the eort and leadership as they developed a focus that has never waned or gotten o track. We are also grateful to the outstanding leaders who helped steer us on to greater heights. These women stepped out on faith and with love, determined to make a dierence. The legacy of each of these dynamic women is intact. Will you be remembered a century from now? What is your legacy?

Black America 2013 Dr. Julianne Malveaux
How will African American people improve our situation in 2013? Right now, we have higher unemployment than any other population in our nation, less wealth, higher school dropout rates, and more crime in our communities. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that African American communities had twice the number of negatives and half the number of positives in our country. While the numbers may have shifted somewhat, it is still true that we are more likely to experience negative consequences (teen pregnancy, incarceration, crime) and less likely to experience positives (college graduation, high net worth). Those of us who focus on public policy will look at past discrimination and ways it manifests itself in the present. We will look at the way race-neutral public policy has a racial impact (for example, changing the terms of the Parent Plus loan hits wealth-poor, creditchallenged black families disproportionately). We will suggest ways to close gaps, some of which may include ways that government investment, such as job creation and job training, can help close these gaps. And we will be right. Whether or not we fall off the fiscal cliff (negotiations are taking place even as I write this), the focus on the level of debt our nation faces suggests that tax reform will reduce tax deductions, some in ways that may increase income inequality, and that spending cuts are imminent. Many of these cuts will be in social programs and educational spending. Again, some of these cuts will widen, not narrow, the wealth and income gaps. What does this mean for Black America in 2013? Pretend that it is Groundhog Day, if you saw the movie. The protagonist wakes up every day to the same day when everything happens the same way. If you keep doing what you have been doing, you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting. For Black American this means that if we keep looking external without looking internal, not much will change for black people. Yes, it will change for some of us. Those who are educated, middle class, well networked and disciplined are likely to find significant opportunities in our stagnant economy because even stagnant economies See MALVEAUX, page 12

An Open Letter to the DFW Community: KKDA-AM
Noah…Negroes! was a shock to the listening audience; but it shouldn’t have. If you know me, you know that I have played the part of Noah as it pertains to the need for Kujichagulia or for selfdetermination if you missed Kwanzaa. For the past 30 years, I have been a voice in the wilderness, lamenting our inability or unwillingness to build our own and have our own. KKDA 730 played a lot of music over a 42 year span. The disc jockeys spun plenty of R&B, Blues, Pop and Jazz. Way back in the day they also played some Gospel. In the midst of all the comments and complaints that have flooded my office, one of those Gospel songs came to mind. Think back and remember the sounds and lyrics of the Sensational Nightingales, “It’s gonna rain, It’s gonna rain. You better get ready and you better get right. God showed Noah, the rainbow sign. He said no more water but fire next time! Hyman Childs is a well-respected business owner, a pioneer of sorts and someone I call friend. For 42 years, this man who doesn’t look like a brother has proven a special appreciation for brothers and sisters in this community. Childs has built one of the few remaining noncorporate and local radio businesses left in this nation, and he has allowed this community to vent, coalesce and grow together. However, when Soul 73 gave way to Seoul 73 on January 1st, the same fans and fair weather friends that had been advocates for Childs and the station, turned on him. Admittedly, the news
Anyone who understands business, could not in good conscience complain about anyone who made an honest investment, kept it for more than four decades and then decided to sell it. That practice is legal, it’s logical and it’s longlived.
The problem with our community is that we continue to want to reap crops from fields that we did not harvest. We want the milk, but won’t buy the cow. Just as in the day of Noah, that great day of reckoning has come. The problem with our community is that we continue to want to reap crops from fields that we did not harvest. We want the milk, but won’t buy the cow. Just as in the day of Noah, that great day of reckoning has come. It’s not just KKDA, there are a multitude of changes coming in our direction and have been for some time. There is no guarantee that your landlord will not demand that you vacate the apartment, condominium or home that you rent today.
On a personal note, I came home recently to find that my mortgage had been sold to another company without my consent. I pay on time all the time. I keep my yard in excellent condition, and I pay my taxes. However, someone somewhere who was vested with all of the rights of OWNERSHIP, made a decision that I have no control over. This year we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s March on Washington. But somehow, we have still not come into the liberty and freedom that we can claim as bona fide, tried, tested and true American citizens. While I will be the first to fight racism and inequality in its sundry facets, the legal sale of KKDA by its owner is not a fight that I would be willing to raise. (Now if you want to figure out how we can buy and have our own, call me.) Let me end the way the Sensational Nightingales ended their song. “Way back in the bible days, Noah told the people it’s gonna rain. But when he told them they paid him no mind and when it happened they were left behind.” You may believe Noah to be crazy, drunk or both. But Noah predicted this rain would come, and if we as a people don’t begin to think and act on our own behalf a greater flood is en route. In other words my constituents and my friends; It’s time to build our own Ark! John Wiley Price Dallas County Commissioner Dallas, TX

LOOKING BEYOND THE MONEY: Have public schools given up on educating poor children?
attend public and private college. It appears to us that public school officials are mainly concerned about losing our tax money rather than addressing the moral collapse within the halls of many of our public schools. We agree with Lt. Gov David Dewhurst and Senator Dan Patrick, Texas gains more productive and better outcomes from our children when we properly educate and provide all people, especially poor children, with the same freedom of school choice as wealthy people.
by Kyev Tatum
Contrary to popular belief, poor children and their parents have not given up on education, the truth is, education officials have given up on poor children and families.
Texas leaders must have a reality check when it comes to supporting parental school choice for our children, especially poor children who are failing painfully and suffering silently at alarming rates. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference Ministers for Education is gravely concerned with the push back from officials when we talk about providing our poor children in unsafe, unfair, failing public schools with “real quality education options and the same financial opportunities as students who
PAGE 7
!
According to the landmark report, Breaking School Rules, 8 out of 10 black boys were sent out of class for behavior issues and sent home or to an alternative program at a cost of millions of dollars to taxpayers. These are children and they need help and hope. I agree with the opinion that we do not need more money for education, we need more education for our money and Parental School Choice, in my opinion, will provide poor
children with the single most impactful education opportunity since Brown vs Education. The SCLC Ministers for Education believes Parental School Choice is the most effective and the most efficient way to close the black-white achievement gap. According to the groundbreaking report submitted to the 83rd Legislative Session from the Texas Interagency Council to Address Disproportionality and the Center for the Elimination of Disproportionality and Disparities at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, over 75% of all black and brown students ill-prepared for life after high school. We can not morally sit back and not fight to provide our children with educational options that meet their needs and not the greed of those who will not move the decision beyond money. This is not a Democratic or Republican issue, this is a moral issue that will not be solved until we give poor people the same education option as others.

Ask Gwen My cousin had a baby by my fiance’ Dear Gwendolyn: I have been going with a man for 16 years. We have been engaged for the past two years this month. We have no children. This is my problem: He recently told me that my cousin's 10 year old son is his. I cried and insisted on a DNA test. Guess what? It's true. He told me that he has been going with my cousin for the past 11 years all the time he was involved with me. Oh by the way, we have lived together for the past 15 years. Yes, it took 14 years for him to propose marriage. I have been happy with him. I have worked the entire time in a high paying career. Because of the recent discovery should I give him up? Doris Dear Doris: Let me tell you this: Time moves rapidly and does not stand still for
anyone. I want you to search the laws for your state regarding ‘common law' marriage. However, if your fiancé has nothing then sorry lady, you will get nothing. I congratulate you for having a good career. At least you have not been a kept woman. If you leave him, you can financially survive and believe me, you do need to leave him. Do not focus on the years gone by. Focus now on going forward with your life finding happiness within yourself. I know to understand your cousin's affair with your man is hurtful. But maybe she and your fiancé are compatible - you know...having a lack of principles. Not only will you need to part from your fiancé, but also put distance between you and your cousin. Sometimes with family you have to step back, go around, go under, or go over the bridge of unfaithfulness and wrongdoings. Doris, let me tell you something else: You asked if you should give him up. Think about it. It seems you never had him --- to begin with. Gwendolyn Baines is an author, lecturer and syndicated advice columnist. Something Natural with Deborah Chambers
Aromatherapy for Feet and Ankles Feet and ankles can tell a lot about the environment as well as the routines and daily habits of an individual. Drastic changes in the weather can cause feet to become achy, and ankles to become painful. Changes in diet (e.g. holiday overeating) can result in swollen ankles, or even gout. Aromatherapy can provide quick and natural relief. The essential oils of cypress and lavender are especially effective in reducing the swelling and discomfort of tired, achy feet and ankles. Cypress is an essential oil that encourages detoxification, and lavender is great for relieving muscular aches and pains. Juniper essential oil is well known for its neutralizing properties of uric acid commonly found in the condition of gout. Contact a certified aromatherapist for a convenient prepared formula, or create your own aromatic foot soak for a safe and natural way to relieve swelling and refresh your feet and ankles. To create your own aromatic foot soak, get a basin, a few river rocks, cool water, and four drops each of cypress, lavender, or juniper. The river rocks can be purchased in the floral or yard department, or even at a beauty supply store that carries massage therapy supplies. Place the rocks in the bottom of the basin to support your feet. The river rocks provide a natural massage for the soles, as you gently move your feet over them. Pour cool (not cold) water in the basin over the rocks to about half the depth of the basin. Lastly, add the drops each of essential oils. Disperse the oil by gently swishing the water. Set the basin at a PAGE 12

comfortable level for resting your feet. Wipe away debris before immersing your feet into the healing, calming foot soak. Soak between 15 and 20 minutes to receive the optimal aromatic benefit. After soaking, elevate feet to encourage circulation. This is just one of the many ways aromatherapy can be used to enhance

MALVEAUX, continued from page 6 churn and create new opportunities. But it won’t change much for those who are less educated, working class, unnetworked and undisciplined, or some combination thereof. Education, networks, and discipline can be fixed. But few have an interest in fixing these things in Black America except for Black Americans. So what are we going to do? Susan Taylor has been a passionate advocate of mentorship in the African American community. She began the work when she Editor-in-Chief at Essence Magazine and left the magazine to expand her reach in that area. She continues to advocate mentorship and to teach us how to be mentors. Her work supports education, networking and discipline. Similarly, in Southeast Washington, DC, Cora Masters Barry leads the Recreation Wish List Committee and works with the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center to nurture more than 150 young people (full disclosure – I am treasurer of the Wish List Board) year-round. Students are trained in physical fitness through tennis, and are encouraged in their academics through learning. Most board members have hands on relationships with our young people, who are held to the highest standards. Again, this work supports education, networking and discipline. Most historically black colleges
do the same thing, bringing corporate partners to campuses and exposing students to the many ways they can access employment opportunities. In many cases, the entire campus offers students engaged mentorship. Education, networking and discipline. When people tell the story of the American Dream, they talk about the many ways that hard work will help someone transcend class. They talk about hard work. People, who earn the minimum wage, work hard. People who make ends meet on public assistance, work hard. It’s not just about hard work. It’s about hard work and the hook up. A corporate leader who is a wonderful friend once said that she could use her position to hook up women and African Americans who needed a hand up. She also indicated that the hook up could help individuals, but we also, and always, need a hook in to public policy decisions that affect our nation. That means we need a seat around every table where public policy is being made, whether on issues of race, or on issues that seem race-neutral. We should be talking about the deficit, about tax reform, about government spending. We should be talking about international affairs, about world areas of conflict, about our fluctuating currency. As long as we live in this flawed nation, all issues are Black

Make a mental note of (or record in a journal) how you feel before and after an aromatherapy application to track the benefits. Approaching health and wellness through aromatherapy is an effort that begins and ends with paying attention to your body and its signals. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to help the body heal itself. It has been used for thousands of years and is the basis for modern day pharmacology. Jamille Bradfield’s Q&A with Marlon Wayans about
HAUNTED HOUSE I recently sat down with actor/comedian/ writer/producer/director Marlon Wayans at the Ritz Carlton in Dallas to discuss his latest project, A HAUNTED HOUSE.
MW: You saw it twice? JB: I saw it twice. MW: Are you serious? JB: Yeah. MW: Did you enjoy it both times? JB: I did. MW: You’re like, “I liked it the first time but the second time it got a little too crazy for me. I had time to think and it’s a little too crazy for me.” JB: It’s actually funnier the second time.
MW: So that’s the basic kind of premise behind the movie, but it’s really my character Malcolm and his girlfriend Kisha moves in and she brings a ghost with her and somehow this ghost ends up coming between their relationship. Kind of tears them a part and then brings them back together. So… MW: See, there’s a love story involved.
MW: In 21 days.
JB: Now tell me are you a big fan I assume of horror? Have you always loved horror films growing up? And the idea for this movie and movies you’ve done in the past with SCARY MOVIE?
MW: “I can’t fight you ‘cause it’s in my dream.” It’s just the idea of something like that, it scares me, it frightens me. But then at the same time, it makes me think, “What would be funny?”
In addition to writing and producing A HAUNTED HOUSE, Marlon stars as Malcolm along with actress Essence Atkins (from sitcoms Half & Half and Are We There Yet?) who plays his girlfriend Kisha. She brings a ghost with her when she moves in with Malcolm and well, as you can imagine, strange things begin to happen. Thanks to the video camera Malcolm set up to tape their sexcapades and a new video surveillance security system, the unexplained occurrences are all caught on tape PARANORMAL ACTIVITY-style. I had a blast talking to Mr. Wayans, as he is just as funny (and animated) in person as he appears on screen. The conversation went a little something like this… JB: Tell me about your new movie, A HAUNTED HOUSE. MW: It’s crazy.
MW: Okay, good. ‘Cause you know you’re going to laugh instead of scream.
JB: You know you said sometimes during the laughter, you miss jokes. MW: Yeah. JB: So yeah, I caught some stuff this time that I didn’t catch last week, so it was good. MW: Okay, well third time’s the charm. JB: Okay. MW: So you know, we try to pack it with as many jokes as possible. We just want the audience to laugh. I haven’t seen a really funny R-rated comedy in long time. JB: Right. MW: That’s why I did R-rated ‘cause I just wanted… JB: You went there. MW: Yeah, I wanted people to go, “Oh no he didn’t.” JB: And oh yes, he did! MW: (laughter) JB: So for people who haven’t seen it yet, tell me about the premise, the basis of A HAUNTED HOUSE. I mean I’ve seen it but… MW: It’s basically PARANORMAL ACTIVITY if it happened to a Black couple. And it’s how we would react to ghosts and the paranormal and how we would react to the experience vs. how we’ve seen the experience acted out by White folks. JB: Right.
JB: Yes, I’ve seen it twice. PAGE 13
JB: Right. I generally can’t watch horror movies, but I love the horror comedy movies.
MW: Really?
!
MW: 66 hours. JB: Wow!
JB: Right. (laughing)
Since his first feature role as a pedestrian in 1988’s I’M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA, Marlon Wayans has appeared on the hit comedy series, In Living Color, co-starred in the hit WB sitcom, The Wayans Bros. with brother Shawn, and either appeared in, wrote and/or produced a plethora of comedy feature films including THE SIXTH MAN, SCARY MOVIE, SCARY MOVIE 2, WHITE CHICKS, LITTLE MAN and DANCE FLICK, to name a few. The multi-talented entertainer also flexed his dramatic acting and action muscles in the critically acclaimed REQUIEM FOR A DREAM and G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF THE COBRA, respectively.
JB: So like, how much footage did you shoot? I know you edited it down.
JB: Okay.
MW: I’m a big fan so much so that I don’t like watching them, but I love them. They just scare me. It’s the idea of like Jason Voorhees, a dude that kills you for no reason, like, “What did I do? I’m just a White girl in the woods. Why do you want to chop me up? And why do have the hockey mask on?” It’s weird. Like, Freddie Krueger. “Why are you in my dreams wanting to slice me with butter knives on your fingers?”
The youngest of 10 children, Marlon is one of several siblings (Keenen Ivory, Damon Sr., Kim and Shawn) in the first generation of entertainers in the Wayans family. The Brooklyn, New York native attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts in New York City (the school made famous in the movie, FAME) and Howard University.
jump cut, jump cut, jump cut. And so, uh, it’s a rapid fire movie. You know, just joke, joke, joke, joke, joke.
JB: Right. Instead of looking at it like that (gesturing with hand over my eyes). MW: Like this (hand over his eyes). Yeah, you want to see the joke. And when the joke is too far you do this (putting hand over eyes but peaking through his fingers). “Damn Marlon.” JB: You talked the other night about this movie being 70 percent written and 30 percent improvisation or improvised.
JB: 66 hours of laughter. MW: In 21 days. It’s a lot. JB: How long did it take you to write the script? MW: Six months the first draft. Another two months afterward and all the way through we were tweaking things and changing things and when Tiddes (Michael Tiddes) jumped on as the director, me and Rick (Alvarez) worked with him and we kind of reconstructed some more stuff. It was a collaborative process. You know, but the first draft, six months. JB: Okay, I want to jump around a little bit and ask you real quick…you have written, you produce, you act, you’ve done TV, features, is there something that you want to do in the industry that you have yet to do? MW: Um… JB: I know you’ve done drama. MW: I think I’d like to probably do more action, more buddy action. More kind of like a BEVERLY HILLS COP movie where it causes you to be grounded yet be funny at the same time because it’s a situation that leads you to do desperate things. As I mature, I understand how to put that math together, whereas when I was younger, I felt like in the movies I was doing, no, actually I did a good job in like SIXTH MAN. I knew when to make ‘em cry and when to make ‘em laugh. So you know, what’s hard for me is, I’m a guy who can do everything. So trying to find that movie where I can do absolutely everything is going to be very hard. So in the meantime, I’ll do a little bit of this, a little of that, a little bit of this, a little bit of that. HAUNTED HOUSE in a way, I get to do everything.
MW: Yes. JB: Talk to me a little a bit about that experience on the set. MW: Well, the found footage movies, basically there is no script a lot of times. It’s just here’s what the scene is, now let’s kind of play it out. JB: Right. MW: That’s what makes them so damn boring at times. In this one we had a script and I just wanted to use the script as a blue print and then from there I wanted those guys to come in and improvise. So the first two takes, we do as scripted and then after that, we’re going off page. And if you make it funnier, I’m keeping it. JB: sure…
JB: Right. MW: You know, I get to be really funny. I get to be the romantic lead. I get to ground the movie. I get to be the straight man. I get to be ridiculously funny. You know, the only thing I don’t get to do is characters in here, but everybody that’s in the movie are characters that I would play and the way I wrote them was like characters I would play in a movie and improvise. But I hired different people to play me. But you know, Hollywood is not doing that many movies, so what I’m going to do is write my own stuff. I’m going to ask myself, what do I want to do, how do I see myself, what do I want to showcase, and those are the things I’m going to start writing and producing because, you know, ‘cause I can.
And with that cast you had, I’m
MW: Oh, they made it funnier. I mean, Cedric (the Entertainer) had 25 things outside the door before he even goes in the room. He just kept saying different stuff and I would cut to it, cut to it, cut to it. It allowed us to…the way these movies are edited even, I can get more jokes per minute than you can in a regular movie. Because it’s just jump cut, !
JB: Okay, well I think that’s our time. MW: Thank you so much. JB: A HAUNTED HOUSE in theaters January 11th. Check it out. M W: F o l l o w m e o n Tw i t t e r @MarlonLWayans. See A HAUNTED HOUSE or else I’m gonna haunt you!

Review: Parental Guidance Three Reels
Bradfield
20th Century Fox’s latest theatrical release, PARENTAL GUIDANCE, tells the story of what happens when old-school grandparents Artie and Diane Decker are entrusted to care for their three grandchildren while the parents are away on business. Written by Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse, and directed by Andy Flickman, PARENTAL
by Bette Midler) decide to take some time off and visit their only daughter, Alice (Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei) and her family in Atlanta. During their visit, their son-in-law Phil (Tom Everett Scott) receives news that the new smart home product he designed is being recognized at a conference out of town and he invites Alice to join him on the
initially not in love with the idea because of what he deems as the impossible demands of his daughter’s type-A personality and high maintenance, modern-day parenting rules, eventually gives in. After a little arm-twisting with both parties, parents and grandparents agree and the fun begins. The film chronicles Artie and Diane’s futile attempts to keep up with Alice’s rigid schedule and rules for their only grandchildren, Harper, Turner and Barker, only to find themselves exhausted and frustrated.
GUIDANCE stars veteran actor/ comedian Billy Crystal as Artie Decker, an over-the-hill, minor league baseball announcer with dreams of becoming a major league game announcer someday. When Artie suddenly loses his job, he and his wife Diane (played PAGE 14

trip, since the two working professionals have not had a grown-up vacation in years. Diane seizes the moment and convinces Alice to let her and her father take care of their three grandchildren while Alice and Phil are out of town. Artie, who is
Determined to prove to Alice that she made the right choice leaving the children with them, Artie and Diane take on the challenges of dealing with eldest child and overachiever Harper’s preoccupation with acing an upcoming music audition, concerns about not getting into the right college and an ageappropriate crush on a boy at school; middle child Turner’s speech impairment and youngest son, Barker’s never-ending shenanigans and behavior issues.
Needless to say, after a series of unfortunate, yet comical mishaps, Artie is ready to call it quits when he finally realizes how much his daughter Alice loves and admires him in spite of their differences in parenting styles, and that in fact Alice would not be the successful wife, mother and professional she is today if it wasn’t for Artie and Diane’s direction in her life. Overall, PARENTAL GUIDANCE is a fun, warm and fuzzy family film that sheds light on generational differences, parenting and aging. Rated PG, the comedy, which has a running time of a mere hour and 36 minutes, opened in U.S. theaters on December 25, 2012.
Intertwined with this main plot is a subplot involving Artie’s undercover efforts to land a sports commentator position with ESPN, which happens to be Alice’s employer.

In our library The Editors Of ESSENCE present A Salute To Michelle Obama Commemorative Book Chronicles First Lady Michelle Obama's Inspiring Journey From the South Side of Chicago to The White House NEW YORK, -- All eyes have been on First Lady Michelle Obama since her husband, President Barack Obama, kicked off his first historic presidential campaign in 2008. Over the years, we have watched her become a style icon and one of the most photographed women in the world. Now, just as Inauguration Day approaches, the editors of ESSENCE have recaptured her earlier moments with a special commemorative book, A Salute to Michelle Obama (Time Inc. Home Entertainment, Inc.) that illuminates her current role as First Lady today and charts one of the most incredible personal journeys in American history. The book also features an introduction by ESSENCE Editor-inchief Constance C.R. White, as well as moving tributes from prolific author Dr. Maya Angelou, life coach Iyanla Vanzant and "First Grandmother" Marian Robinson. A Salute to Michelle Obama documents Mrs. Obama's life from the South Side of Chicago to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. This lavishly illustrated title also explores the social, cultural and political impact of the First Lady's education, health, and military family initiatives; her national and international causes and campaigns, and her broad fashion sense that connects with both Seventh Avenue and Main Street. Similar to ESSENCE's previous best-sellers, The Obamas in the White House: Reflections on Family, Faith and Leadership, and The Obamas: Portrait of American's New First Family, this latest offering combines stunning images of the First Lady in and out of the White House with the President and her family, along with memorable quotes she
has provided both exclusively to the magazine and from her most popular speeches and addresses. "The editors of ESSENCE took special care in pulling images and quotes from celebrities and influencers that would commemorate the First Lady's journey over the past four years," said Constance C.R. White, ESSENCE Editor-in-chief. "These photos truly capture the sheer admiration and pride that her fans feel whenever they see her—whether she's speaking to a crowd of thousands at the Democratic National Convention or when she's simply alone with her family. This book is very timely as Inauguration Day approaches, and we begin to look forward to even more stunning images of the First Lady over the next four years. This book also promises to be a wonderful gift to a young woman in your life for the holidays, especially since it reinforces positive images of Black women."
Secrets to Success Real Stories, By Real People Production has published My Secrets to Success by Kelia R. Bazile. My Secrets To Success: explores Kelia Bazile’s twenty-eight years of personal and business experience, in order to help others achieve the success they deserve. My Secrets to Success is a compelling story about a high school student who took a summer job at Taco Bell that turned out to be much more than she initially expected. The author, Kelia Bazile worked her way through the corporate ranks to become, not only Taco Bell’s First African-American Region Leader, but also the First AfricanAmerican to lead a region in the company’s forty-five year history. The most difficult challenges she faced were working to earn her college education, while dealing with the responsibilities and issues that come along with a full time job, as well as being a wife, and the mother of three. Kelia Bazile found out early in her career what it was like to stand in the long food-stamp and (WIC) Women, Infants and Children lines; but it wasn’t by choice, it was a much-needed benefit. Many people would have given up and thrown in the towel when faced with the added stress of their parent’s divorce and

Kelia was born February 8, 1967 in New Orleans, Louisiana and grew up in Vacherie, Louisiana. The wife and mother of three children attended public schools and in 1985 graduated in the Top Ten of her class from St. James High School. After graduating high school, Kelia studied criminal justice at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. In
1986, she left Louisiana and moved to Dallas, Texas. Upon relocation, Kelia transferred to Richland Junior College in Richardson, Texas where she received an associate’s degree in Business Administration in 1993. OBAMA: HEALTH INSURANCE RATES WILL DROP IN 2013 -- Low Cost Affordable Health Insurance Plans Already Available Online at www.AffordableHealthInsurance.org --
Nationwide (BlackNews.com) -It's happening! Obamacare is starting to take effect, and health insurance rates are starting to drop. The Obama administration said earlier this week that it has cleared more states to develop their own insurance markets, including Idaho, Nevada and Utah. To date, 20 states including Washington, DC have been
