I MESSENGER

Its’a big weekend as we celebrate the Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Inauguration of President Barack Obama. Then next weekend will be the installation of Rev. Ronald Jones as the Senior Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Dallas. I’d venture to guess that while Dr. King talked about his dream, Rev. Jones, who is also the Mayor of Garland Texas, and President Barack Obama who was re-elected Cheryl Smith in November; both had dreams too! What the three have in common is something we need to ensure is instilled in all of our young boys and girls. Too often we talk about the negative things that our children do, instead of uplifting them and giving them that positive reinforcement that could determine their future. True, there are some who will hear negative comments and be inspired to prove their critics wrong. Unfortunately, however there are far too many who can’t rebound from the negativity and their lives become just what the critics plant in their heads. Our children need to hear more about the positive elements and people in the world. They need to see that you don’t have to act poorly or do something illegal or immoral to receive attention. The three men, President Obama, Dr. King and Mayor Jones; are family men. They have been sources of support and inspiration to more than the children in their families. Thee are numerous activities celebrating the lives of these young men. While we are celebrating, or observing; it is imperative that we show some love to the young boys and girls that we come into contact with. I, too, am a dreamer and I believe that until we treat our young better, we will have more and more mothers crying because of behaviors that we have to accept responsibility for. Instead of thinking that everything our children do is cute, we should be making sure that they receive the proper guidance, love and discipline that will also ensure that they do not grow up displaying a sense of entitlement that is so prevalent among today’s youth. There are so many men and women who are making their mark and we need to celebrate them as well. This is definitely a time to celebrate and it’s also a time for self-assessment. We can all make a dierence in the lives of others. We can all have dreams and we can all work to make sure our dreams are a reality for us and others.

Celebrate Dr. King By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Even fortyfive years since his assassination, the work and the message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have great meaning and relevance. Dr. King, whose father was a Baptist minister and whose mother was an accomplished church musician, helped to change the very soul of America. He gave hope to a generation of people who were searching for meaning in their lives, and to millions throughout the world who hungered for freedom and for change. Dr. King stood boldly in the face of threats on his life and harm to his wife and four young children. He proclaimed that all people in this nation were equal. His work led to the passage of crucial Civil Rights legislation and to better relationships between various groups of American citizens. A distinguished graduate of Morehouse College and Boston University, Dr. King did not begin his ministry to become a human rights legend. His major interest was to lead a congregation and preach messages of love, forgiveness and salvation on Sunday mornings. Yet, history had a different role for Dr. King, who became a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. His powerful sermons are still quoted today from Cleveland to Cape Town. Dr. King sacrificed his life for the common good and for common people. In April of 1968 Dr. King, who could have been a dinner guest at the White House or a concert patron in Carnegie Hall, was in Memphis, Tennessee protesting the treatment of underpaid sanitation workers. Dr. King empathized with them, knew the value of their work and gave his life so that their lives might improve. He was in Memphis not because he had to be there, but because he believed that he should be there, and because he felt a commitment to those considered by many to be the “least of these.” And now nearly half a century since a bullet ended a single majestic life, people across the globe will pause to remember the gift that he gave. The work of Dr. King, his commitment to others and his love for all people is still with us. May we continue to live in his spirit, and walk in the path that he helped to establish.

The Black Press at its best By George E. Curry When then-National Newspaper Publishers Association Chairman Danny Bakewell, Sr. asked me to emcee the Black Press Week luncheon at the National Press Club in 2011, I had no idea that I would be witnessing history. At the urging of Wilmington Journal Publisher Mary Alice Thatch, the NNPA decided to launch a national campaign to win pardons for the Wilmington 10, a group of activists who were falsely convicted and sentenced to a combined total of 282 years. Everyone knew it would be an uphill battle, but it was a battle the NNPA was willing to wage. It established The Wilmington Ten Pardon of Innocence Project whose goal was “to generate national and worldwide support for the petition, to the state of North Carolina, and specifically the governor, to grant individual pardons of innocence to the Wilmington Ten. NNPA publishers saw a video about the Wilmington Ten at the luncheon and its leader, Benjamin Chavis, Jr., was interviewed by me and the publishers. When I asked Ben, a longtime friend, about his lowest point in prison, he tried to steer me away from the question by saying he preferred to focus on the future, not the past. But the past affects the future, which is why I brought him back to my original question. This time, he gave a direct, emotional answer. “I was warned not to go into the shower,” he said, his voice barely audible. “I couldn’t take a bath for eight months.” And the reason Chavis was reluctant to take a bath was because of death threats. No one should have to live like that, especially after the criminal justice system has been manipulated to obtain a false conviction.

For Chavis, the trouble began after the all-Black high school was closed as part of the court-ordered desegregation of New Hanover County, N.C. schools. The Black students were forced to attend the previously all-White high school, where they were harassed. In February 1971, the United Church of Christ dispatched Chavis, a native of Oxford, N.C., to help organize a school boycott. During that period of unrest, someone firebombed Mike’s Grocery, a White-owned business located a block away from Gregory Congregational Church, where Chavis had set up headquarters. When fire fighters and police officers arrived, they were attacked by snipers. Chavis and nine others were charged and convicted of arson and conspiracy in connection with the incident. Most of the defendants received a 29-year sentence, with Ann Shepard, the White woman from Auburn, N.Y., receiving the lightest sentence of 15 years and Chavis, then only 24 years old, getting 34 years, the longest sentence. In 1980, a federal appeals court overturned the convictions of the Wilmington Ten. The court ruled that the trial judge had wrongly restricted defense attorneys from cross-examining witnesses who had received special treatment in exchange for their testimony and that the prosecutor violated due process rights by failing to turn over evidence that would have impeached the testimony of its chief witness, Allen Hall. In addition, the prosecutor refused to turn over a second statement made by Hall that directly contradicted at least 15 of his allegations. After taking up the cause of the Wilmington Ten, NNPA newspapers gave prominent display to stories written about the case by Cash Michaels, editor of the Wilmington

Journal, and distributed to member papers by the NNPA News Service. Through talent and dogged persistence, neither Cash nor his publisher, Mary Alice Thatch, would let the campaign for pardons stall. The national campaign heated up last spring when Michaels produced a string of stories examining every aspect of the case. In one story, Michaels traced the shattered lives of the seven survivors (one has since died) and the families of three deceased members of the Wilmington Ten. He found that some of the survivors, including Chavis, had successfully rebuilt their lives while others had not. One blockbuster story began: “In an extraordinary discovery, the 40-year-old case files of the prosecuting attorney in the two 1972 Wilmington Ten criminal trials not only document how he sought to impanel, according to his own written jury selection notes, mostly White ‘KKK’ juries to guarantee convictions, but also to keep Black men from serving on both juries.” Michaels story continued, “The prosecutor chose, in his own words, ‘Uncle Tom’ types to serve on the jury, it was disclosed. The files of Assistant New Hanover County District Attorney James ‘Jay’ Stroud Jr. also document how he plotted to cause a mistrial in the first June 1972 Wilmington Ten trial because there were 10 Blacks and two Whites on the jury, his star false witness against the Ten was not cooperating, and it looked very unlikely that he could win the case, given the lack of evidence.” Without Michaels’ exceptional reporting and the national exposure, many of the facts about the Wilmington Ten injustice would still remain unknown – and Gov. Perdue would not have pardoned the civil rights activists. This was the Black Press at its best.

he’s going to do it (propose) this time. I am so excited. I can’t believe I am getting the man every woman wants.

Ask Gwen

Dorothy

Dear Dorothy:

My boyfriend is going to propose on New Year’s Eve! Dear Gwendolyn: I have lived with my aunt for 10 years. She would not allow my boyfriend to move in. Therefore, he moved in with another woman, but he does not love her. He loves me. Gwendolyn, there is a little problem: My aunt thinks I should break off the courtship and totally forget about the marriage. For the last four years he has announced to friends he is going to propose to me on New Year’s Eve. For four years he never did. My aunt does not want to see me hurt.

You got to back-up that statement of ‘every woman wants him.’ I don’t want him. Think about it. He’s not that special, but I must admit – he got something going. With him living with another woman and holding you believing each year is going to be the year, I am speechless and lost for words. Stop your search for a wedding dress. Even if he does propose to you on New Year’s Eve, you will only be getting the other woman’s — leftovers.

Something Natural with Deborah Chambers

The Aromatic Benefits of Pine Pine is one of the most familiar aromas during the Holiday season. Sitting in a room with a live Christmas tree is a pleasant experience because of the natural revitalizing properties of pine. In addition to adorning the doorways and hearths at Christmas, pine is versatile and very effective in its essential oil form. There are many species of pine. However, pinus sylvestris is the species most often used for the distillation of the essential oil. The essential oil is produced by the steam distillation of fresh pine needles and twigs. It ranges from colorless to a pale yellow. It may be used full strength for environmental applications (e.g. a room diffuser), but should be blended with a base oil when applying to the body. Hippocrates, the father of Western

medicine, first investigated pine and recorded its therapeutic benefits to the respiratory system. In spas offering a full range of services, pine is used in saunas and steam baths. Its natural cleansing actions are antibacterial, antifungal, disinfecting and antimicrobial. The versatility of pine is demonstrated in saunas and steam baths through the additional benefit of clearing PAGE 11

!

and strengthening the nasal and bronchial passages. Pine essential oil blends well with eucalyptus, rosemary, cypress, lavender and lemon. An effective muscle rub for aches and pains is a blend of rosemary and pine in a sweet almond oil base. Add a few drops of pine and lemon essential oils in a spray bottle with water and use to prevent mold and mildew in the shower. Always shake well to blend the essential oil with the carrier before and during use. Pine oil is especially effective in steam inhalations when seeking relief from the discomfort of colds, flu, laryngitis, coughs or bronchitis. Placing 5 to 10 drops in a steamer can bring quick relief. If a steamer is not available, the at home method is very simple using a pot with a fitting lid. First fill a pot with water to half. On the stovetop, boil the water. Turn the stove off, put 5 to 7 drops of pine essential oil in the hot water, and cover with the lid. Place a towel over your head and lean over the pot creating a “tent”. Close eyes, and remove the lid. Breathe deeply for 3 to 5 minutes. The natural evergreen aroma of pine essential oil is a natural alternative to harsh synthetic preparations. Enjoy the smell of pine during the holiday season and its aromatic benefits throughout the entire year.

OXYGEN SILENT ON FATE OF “ALL MY BABIES' MAMAS;” CRITICS CONTINUE TO DEMAND ITS CANCELLATION

JANUARY 18, 2013

“Today we carried our message directly to the doors of Oxygen and their parent company, NBC Universal, in multiple cities around the country. This show stereotypes black parents and promotes dangerous messages to diverse young women,” said Lamb. “Today we stand to protect children and young people from malicious, dangerous and violent television programming. Children and young people deserve responsible programming from the adults who produce television.”

NEW YORK – Author Sabrina Lamb, whose petition on Change.org urges the Oxygen Network to cancel plans for a controversial show called “All My Babies’ Mamas,” delivered 37,000 signatures today to Oxygen’s offices in New York. Simultaneous petition deliveries also took place in Philadelphia and Los Angeles to condemn the show.

“All My Babies’ Mamas” stars rapper Shawty Lo, his 11 children, and their 10 mothers. The series’ development was announced in late December and was slated to air sometime in 2013. Since Sabrina Lamb’s petition gained momentum, Oxygen has pulled clips of the show from the Internet, news outlets have reported the show will be canceled and social media has been buzzing with rumors of the show’s demise, but Oxygen has not publicly commented on the future of the series.

While Lamb hand delivered the signatures at Oxygen’s New York office, multiple outlets reported that the reality show had been cancelled by the network after the Daily Beast cited “anonymous sources” confirming the cancellation. Despite numerous emails and phone calls from reporters and supporters of Lamb’s campaign, Oxygen has not commented on the rumors. The network is staying the course with their original statement -now weeks old -- that the show was “not meant to be a stereotypical representation.”

“As dysfunctional and violent as socalled reality shows are, could you ever imagine a one hour spectacle where 11 children are forced to witness their 10 unwed mothers clamor for financial support, emotional attention, and sexual reward from Shawty Lo, the apathetic father?” Lamb said.

At the delivery, Lamb said that Oxygen needs to listen to its viewers and confirm they will cancel the show that was set to star rapper Shawty Lo, his 11 children, and their ten mothers.

Lamb’s campaign has been endorsed by actress Kim Coles, popular Los Angeles radio host Mo’Kelly, and Sirius radio personality Devon Anjelica.

You will LUV Common and Michael Rainey Four Reels

Bradfield Directed by Sheldon Candis and written by Candis and Justin Wilson, LUV is a gripping coming-of-age story about an 11year-old boy named Woody (Michael Rainey, Jr.) and his idolization of his role model — his Uncle Vincent (Common) who has recently been released from prison. (Woody’s mother is in North Carolina in drug rehab). Set in Baltimore, the film follows a day in the life of Uncle Vincent as he attempts to re-enter society legitimately with a slate wiped clean of his drug-dealing past. Dressed to impress with a business plan for a new restaurant in hand, the inciting incident in this drama occurs when Uncle Vincent allows Woody to skip school and hang out with him for a day with the goal of teaching the young,

$25,000. Enter complication number one. As a result, the unpaid debt will prevent Vincent from being approved for a loan. Vincent begs the loan officer to give him a few days to come up with the money and the bank rep agrees to revisit Vincent’s loan application once the mortgage is no longer in arrears. Faced with a serious cash-flow dilemma, Uncle Vincent ponders alternatives for coming up with the $25K and when he’s left with no other options, he reluctantly turns to the one man he holds responsible for his stint in prison — Fish (Dennis Haysbert), a bigtime, albeit old-school, drug dealer who Uncle Vincent worked for during his dope-slinging days on the streets of Baltimore. impressionable pre-teen a few life lessons on how to be a man. These “lessons” include everything from how to dress, how to drive a car and how to fire a handgun. However, when Uncle Vincent attempts to secure a business loan to fund his dream of opening a restaurant, he is shocked to learn that apparently while he was locked up his mother (Lonette McKee) fell behind on the mortgage to the tune of nearly PAGE 14

his own son, half-heartedly welcomes Vincent back. When Vincent explains his situation, Fish offers him the opportunity to earn the cash he needs by making one last “drop” for him. Uncle Vincent agrees to do it and young Woody is watching all of this unfold, by the way. This scenario in the storyline is the film’s point of no return and reminds you of HBO’s hit series, The Wire, especially with Michael Kenneth

Danny Glover and Common

Williams (Omar Little on The Wire) co-starring as Detective Holloway. Uncle Vincent promises to drive Woody to North Carolina that night to visit his mother after he handles some business, and although Woody wants to believe his beloved uncle, it’s obvious that Woody is a tad skeptical of Uncle Vincent’s promise-keeping abilities. Nevertheless, Woody goes along with their pact anyway. After the duo confronts a few badass adversaries in Baltimore’s criminal world, the film’s momentum picks up as the story builds toward its climax, which I will not give away. I will say that LUV’s ending may leave moviegoers posing the question, “So what happens to Woody?” To which Candis responds, “ He goes to California, goes to USC, becomes a filmmaker and makes a film called ‘LUV,’ because basically I am Woody.” He and co-writer Justin Wilson did a phenomenal job with the development of this story, and Candis did an equally commendable job directing the all-star cast of not only hip hop recording artist turned actor, Common, but also with brilliant newcomer, Michael Rainey, Jr., and veterans Dennis Haysbert, Danny Glover and Charles S. Dutton. The chemistry on-screen between Common and Rainey is amazing and both give powerful performances. Additionally, the !

story was so strong that it attracted former Dallas Maverick, Michael Finley, to attach himself to the film as executive producer, as he dabbles in film and television projects as a new passion post his NBA career. An official selection at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, LUV, originally titled Learning Uncle Vincent, is a project that Candis and producer Jason Michael Berman, fellow USC grads, have been working on for the past seven years and the fruits of their labor are finally ripe for picking with the film’s theatrical release on January 18, 2013. Distributed by Indomina Group, LUV is 94 minutes of what life is like for a precocious young boy raised in a broken home in a crime-ridden neighborhood and the crucial decision he must make to follow his hero or become his own man. When asked what they want audiences to take-away from this film, both Common and Candis responded that they hope LUV will spark a conversation about providing young boys (and girls) across the country with positive role models, real heroes and programs and opportunities to keep them off the streets and help shape them into productive, lawabiding men and women. Common and Michael Rainey, Jr., are brilliant! Four reels !

The perfect house? Three Reels

Bradfield Have you ever wondered why Hollywood rarely casts African Americans in leading roles in horror movies? My guess is the film would be extremely short because we generally don’t stick around to investigate where the unexplained noises are coming from or why creepy things keep occurring. We simply pack our belongings and vacate the premises immediately. Period. Not that I am a big fan of the horror genre, but up until R & B singing sensation Trey Songz’s recent feature debut in TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D, I can’t remember the last time I saw an African American billed as a main character in a scary movie. Well, the multi-talented Marlon Wayans is just bold enough to test the waters with his latest feature film, A HAUNTED HOUSE. Cowritten by Wayans and Rick Alvarez and directed by Michael Tiddes, this atypical formula of capturing the reactions of a Black couple living in a house haunted by a ghost in contrast to how we have seen White characters react to similar experiences with the undead, is the basic premise behind this horror comedy that is slathered with silly jokes, flatulence, vulgarity and raunchy content. Wayans plays Malcolm, a successful African-American man (with an unidentified profession) who has purchased his dream home in an affluent neighborhood. In anticipation of his girlfriend Kisha moving in with him, Malcolm buys a new video camera to record what he believes will be endless sexual escapades once Kisha becomes his live-in lover. Sounds like a win-win for a single, young man in a committed relationship, right? Perhaps it would be except there’s one problem. In PAGE 15

addition to Kisha’s ridiculously large collection of ladies shoes, unbeknownst to Malcolm, she also brings a ghost with her. Quite naturally, or should I say supernaturally, the couple begins to hear slamming doors and things that go bump in the night. Initially, Malcolm is a non-believer and blows it off, but between Kisha’s persistence, his dwindling sex life and caught-on-tape video footage (à la PARANORMAL ACTIVITY), she eventually convinces him that the house is indeed haunted. When Kisha becomes possessed by the demon, instead of packing up and moving out, Malcolm is determined to rescue his woman and most importantly, restore his sex life. He enlists help from an unlikely cast of misfits including Chip the psychic (Nick Swarsdon) who can’t stay focused on the exorcism because he has the hots for Malcolm; a parolee

priest named Father Doug Williams (Cedric the Entertainer) who is fresh out of the penitentiary; and two goofy part-time, self-acclaimed ghost busters, Dan and Bob (David Koechner and Dave Sheridan). Thanks to the cast’s incomparable improvisational skills, I laughed out loud several times during this movie, however, I must admit that there were also a few times that I cringed at the crudeness of some of the sexually explicit jokes and I am not easily shocked. You know how some parents will see the previews for an R-rated movie and decide that it’s only a “little” bad language or a “few” sexual references, so it’s probably okay for my 16-year-old to see? Not the case with A HAUNTED HOUSE. The R-rated humor in this film is definitely intended for the 18 and above crowd, and not at all fit for !

young eyes or ears, so parents beware. During my interview with Marlon Wayans, he said he had not seen an R-rated comedy in a really long time and he wanted to leave audiences saying, “Oh no he didn’t!” Well, take it from me, “Oh yes, he did!” He goes all the way over the top, down the hill, through the lake and back up over the top again with this film. Let’s just say I will never be able to look at a stuffed animal the same way again. With a running time of one hour and 35 minutes, A HAUNTED HOUSE, distributed by Open Roads Films, is in theaters nationwide. Laugh out loud funny! Three reels

New Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas boasts spectacular exhibits, cutting edge technology

Bradfield Last month, local residents and holiday visitors were privy to a special treat when the doors to the long-awaited Perot Museum of Nature and Science opened at its new home. The Museum, which was constructed without incurring any public funding or debt, is located on a 4.7-acre site at 2201 N. Field St., just north of Victory Park and downtown Dallas. Designed by 2005 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Thom Mayne and his firm Morphosis Architects, the Dallas museum was named in honor of Margot and Ross Perot as a result of a $50-million gift donated by their adult children — Ross Perot, Jr., Nancy Perot Mulford; Suzanne Perot McGee; Carolyn Perot Rathjen; and Katherine Perot Reeves. The 180,000-square-foot museum, which is accredited by the American Museum Association, features five floors with 11 permanent, interactive exhibit halls including Discovering Life Hall; Being Human Hall; Texas Instruments Engineering and Innovation Hall; The Rees-Jones Foundation Dynamic Earth Hall; Lyda Hill Gems and Minerals Hall; Tom Hunt Energy Hall; Expanding Universe Hall; T. Boone Pickens Then and Now Hall; and Rose Hall of Birds. The new facility also features the Moody Family Children’s Museum on the Lower Level complete with outdoor play space/courtyard, Sports Hall; The Hoglund Foundation Theater, a multimedia, 3D digital cinema with state-ofthe art 4K digital projection and seating for 298; an auditorium; a café; and a Museum Shop. Because of its mission “to inspire minds through nature and science,” the Perot Museum fully incorporates the natural world and the manmade world, concentrating on earth and space sciences, life and natural sciences, chemistry, physical sciences and engineering. The new building itself is a shining example of science education evident by the unique architecture, nature and technology. “Our hope is that the Perot Museum will be a living, vibrant and entertaining science lesson for all ages — from cradle to gray,” said Nicole G. Small, Eugene McDermott CEO of the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. “We want to inspire life-long learning; improve science on a local and national level by motivating young people to pursue STEM careers and to go on to make amazing, life-changing discoveries; and strengthen the economy as millions visit over the next decade.” The building resembles a giant cube floating above a landscaped base and according to Mayne, the one-acre landscaped base of rolling roofscape is comprised of indigenous rock and PAGE 16

!

native drought resistant grasses and is essential to the lower part of the building and cannot be duplicated. Apparently, the plans for the new Museum were so attractive to investors that $100 million of the $185-million fundraising goal was achieved before anyone knew what the building would look like. The remaining $85 million was also raised by November 2011, more than a year before the Museum’s scheduled opening. The funds paid for the site acquisition, exhibition planning and design, construction of the new facility, education programs and an endowment. After a recent visit, it was confirmed that the funds were certainly well spent. The designers and developers thought of everything and spared no expense in ensuring Dallas would have a worldclass museum that would serve as a scientific marvel for years to come. A few of the must-see and do items at this breathtaking facility include the 35foot-long Malawisaurus dinosaur and 88 “dancing water” molecules in the main lobby; the 54-foot glass-encased escalator overlooking downtown Dallas; Motion Lab and Running Wall in the Sports Hall; musical stairs and musical floor (between the main lobby and Lower Level); experience an earthquake and touch a tornado in The Rees-Jones Foundation Dynamic Earth Hall; and the world’s first-ever installation of the 85-foot Alamosaurus in the T. Boone Pickens Life Then and Now Hall. The Perot Museum of Nature and Science boasts top-notch, cutting edge technology throughout the various exhibit halls. Corporate giant Dell Services partnered with the Museum to provide ongoing services to support the Museum’s IT needs. According to David Quayle with Dell Services, they have four full-time staff on-site and 15-20 staff working remotely to manage network applications in the data building’s data center and they are connected to Dell’s data center in Plano. The computer network was built into the skeleton of the building and took nine months to complete. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. General admission is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students and $10 for children under 12. Parking is $6 per car on-site, $4 if pre-paid online, and $3 for Museum members. Charter Memberships (personal and gift) are $45 for students, $65 for individuals, $80 for dual memberships, $100 for Family, $160 for Family Plus, and $200 for Family Plus Platinum. Patron level memberships also are available for $250 and up. For details, call 214-756-5751 or visit www.perotmuseum.org.

Countless hours of

Dr. Jones was elected Mayor of the City of Garland in 2007 and is currently serving his third and final term as Mayor of Garland, the 10th largest city in Texas, with a population of over 228,000. Urban Youth Empowerment Program begins January 29 Through a grant from the Department of Labor, the Urban League of Greater Dallas now offers a career and education development program with service learning opportunities for young adults between the ages 18 and 21. The Urban Youth Empowerment Program (UYEP) is a 6-8 month long commitment and includes job readiness courses, career and education support, service learning projects, internship placements, and assistance with job placement or enrollment in post-secondary education institution or an industry recognized certification program. For more information contact Stefon Chandler at schandler@ulgdnctx.com or call (214) 915-4696. Educators are concerned that cost may prevent students and

adults from obtaining a GED test credential. The Urban League’s UYEP program includes a GED curriculum which is a free program that includes classroom instruction and weekly meetings with an advisor to assess progress. Test fees are waived. Students who qualify for the Urban Youth Empowerment Program also receive tutoring and flexible class hours. To put them on the road for educational success, they receive financial counseling, one-on-one career coaching, and a graduation ceremony upon completion. Eligible participants must have had contact with the justice system between the ages of 14 and 18 but not charged as an adult, and live in Dallas County. At the close of the program students will leave with a GED or high school diploma,

solid skills to enter and compete in the workforce, and a positive relationship with their community. Youth who have been involved in the juvenile justice system find themselves uniquely disadvantaged; often they are considerably behind in academic achievement, with little guidance on how to succeed in the workplace. Communities lose trust in young offenders and offenders continue to feel displaced and disengaged from the community. In addition to providing academic support to earn a GED or high school diploma and training on how to succeed in the workplace, UYEP participants will engage in 448 hours of paid service learning where they develop necessary employment skills while substantively and

The I MESSENGER Family gives thanks and extends heartfelt wishes for the best for each and everyone. And remember that for this short time we are on this earth, we can do so much to make this world a better place.

In our library Roll Call! African American high school students face the hurtle of math HOUSTON – According to the

National Math and Science Initiative, America is ranked 25th under other countries in high school science and mathematics comprehension. Among this placement, African American students struggle especially. Dr. Clarence Johnson makes the above claim in his new book Roll Call: 2012.This long-term study proves that the concept of math mastery is directly related to the high-stakes learning improvement of this particular group. Roll Call: 2012 paints a picture of the obstacles students face. As a group, African Americans continuously receive less resources and support than other students. Especially damaging to the learning process is the complex embedment of technology in our daily lives. Parents, teachers and communities have a multitude of options to aid in the learning process. Dr. Johnson’s recognition of the obstacles will aid scores of future students. “I made a commitment…to share my research findings and recommendations with all parents and students in America,” Dr. Johnson says. With information on how colleges, and the job market must respond to the reality of the situation, Roll Call: 2012 lays forth the bridgework to the wholesome learning environment that every student deserves. Roll Call: 2012 By: Dr. Clarence Johnson

Prior to serving as a high school principal for 14 years, he spent ten years in the classroom as a junior high mathematics teacher. Having received a Bachelor of Science in Education, as well as a Master of Education Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Prairie View A & M University, Dr. Johnson expanded his expertise in 2008 by earning a doctorate of philosophy in educational leadership. Dallas Bishop releases new eBook, CD Series urging Men and Women to Incorporate New Prayer Strategies to Improve Their Relationships

Davis' eBook and CDs offers his readers and listeners - a rich source of useful advice in helping men and women cope with their struggles as he teaches them ‘strategies’ for making their journey more successful.

Men, Women also embrace their struggle in living D.A. Davis, a Dallas, preacher, teacher and author, has written a new eBook series, "Unveiling the Butterfly in You" and has produced a companion set of audio CDs that challenges men and women to work through their struggles as the butterfly does just to live.

"People are tired, defeated, frustrated, hurting and disappointed with life," Davis said, "due to their struggle to survive." Davis advises that people need to change their viewpoint to focus on what can be changed. Davis, who has been married over 27 years, said that 23 of those years have been good. The father of three children recommends that, "we change how we think, because the butterfly has no choice but to embrace its struggles and work through them just to live."

"Just like the butterfly struggling to get out of its cocoon we humans strive to get out of our tough places (problems)," Davis said as part of his soothing strategy throughout his CDs' that is designed to help men and women

get to the place they desire. "When you look at your present situation and face your own reality now you can shift the odds in your favor." Over the years, Davis said he has counseled both individuals and married couples about how to improve their relationships or marital struggle. "It is prayer that the CDs will help them to redefine themselves," Davis said. "At the root of many relational or marital problems are poor communication skills." Davis draws upon his abilities to communicate effectively, leadership skills combined with his ministerial experience and practical application during his 27 years of marriage to combat the forces that defy a successful relationship or marriage. Davis offers weekly relational or marital advice on the "LIVE RELATIONSHIP TALK LINE", 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. CST every Thursday evening. Toll Free Call: (760) 569-6000; Code 474372#.
