True, it was considerably warmer on my living room couch than seated in the uniform chair freezing at the inauguration in Washington, DC four years ago; but that didn’t take away from the second inauguration of President Barack Hussein Obama. Watching on television was equally rewarding and emotional as the first inauguration because there are so many reasons to celebrate. In addition to Inauguration Day, January 21 was also the official day to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Some felt an urgency to attend the first inauguration, because of the historic implications. President Obama’s second inauguration is as significant, many say, because they don’t foresee another Black president, in the near future. Cheryl Smith One viewer, said, “this will never happen again!” I, however, am optimistic that the buck does not end with the Obama era in four years. There are so many bright men AND women of color who are just as prepared, if not better prepared, to serve as anyone else. Maybe folks are responding to the blatant disrespect that the president and his family have been subjected to. Despite the inappropriateness of many, the Obamas have remained the epitome of class and grace. So, it was especially good to see the love displayed as they walked the parade route on Inauguration Day. I got a big kick out of reading a Facebook post from a fellow journalist who said her son said he would one day either be president or a backup dancer for singer Chris Brown. As we celebrate the birthday of Dr. King it is imperative that we encourage our children to dream, while also supporting their efforts in pursuit of those dreams. Too often, unfortunately, parents have been dream killers. Sure being president and a backup dancer are so far apart in career choices, and for some unattainable and others unimpressive, but guess what, you only live once. Dream and achieve! Inauguration/Dr. King Day 2013, children around the world had an opportunity to see positive news focusing on two Black men. Even NBC’s Brian Williams made note of the significance of the day as he encouraged viewers to sit their children in front of their televisions to see the coverage of both Dr. King and President Obama. Now after the pomp and circumstance, it is back to the business at hand. People are being vocal about the partisan politics and the nastiness that appears to be the order of the day. Hopefully all have gotten the message and will govern themselves accordingly. And, if they don’t, I hope that President Obama will hold everyone accountable. I am a firm believer that people who do wrong things will only do what you allow them to get away with. We don’t know when we’ll have another opportunity for a Black family in the White House, so if we really want to make a difference in the world, we need to work on the Black family in our own homes!

They told me last week that that could work. OBAMA: I'm not going to prejudge the recommendations that are given to me. I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools. And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem. Clearly, the president did not say he was skeptical about placing armed security guards in schools. Instead, he said that is not “the only answer.” Even more insane, at a press conference, Wayne LaPierre of the NRA asserted that the answer to preventing future incidents like the one at Sandy Hook Elementar y School in Newtown, Conn. is the placement of armed guards in every school. Among the proposals presented by President Obama is providing federal funds to place more officers in schools, if the school requests them. A f te r a c t i n g o n a s p e c i f i c proposal made by NRA, the gun lobbying organization denounced Obama yet again. After coming under attack by even some conser vatives, NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said: “If anyone thinks we're talking s p e c i f i c a l l y a b o u t s o m e o n e 's children, they're missing the point completely…” No, that’s exactly the point. Leave those beautiful Obama girls out of your degenerate ad campaigns.

Growing Texas will strain tight budget seams AUSTIN -- You as parents can all relate to this as well as I, a father, can also witness. It's what happened every year as my offspring approached the start of a new season, let alone a new school year. The clothes I bought for them last summer, last fall, just didn't fit anymore. I had to dig down and spend money to accommodate growth. Each year Texas, a state that's projected to have almost 33 million residents by 2030, has added hundreds of thousands of new citizens. All will need housing. All will need some way to navigate roads and highways that grow more congested by the day. Many will have children who will add to the annual count of more than 80,000 new students who enter Texas' public schools each year. No more than we can squeeze our kids into the clothes they wore two years ago, can we expect to bind

restoring cuts made to higher education funding for both institutions and students. However, neither budget version heads in that direction. While the costs of tuition and fees at state colleges and universities have increased by an estimated 90 percent since deregulation, state support for the same has gone the opposite direction. Higher education funding was cut by more than $900 million under the current budget. Neither Senate nor House plans restore funding, and may in fact, provide even less for colleges in FY14-15. And still left lacking are firm plans to finance transportation infrastructure and future water needs. We must get back on course if Texas business and industry is to be supplied with the workforce it needs. Texas is on the verge of exploring new principles of economics and physics. In theory, some say we can successfully plan to contract and expand at the same time. Such an outcome may also defy logic.

Reparations, continued from page 5 = $ 3.7 trillion Next, I apply the 2% interest rate (compounded annually). This gives a multiplicative factor of (1.02)^140 = 16, for the 140 years from 1860 to 2000. Further compounding could be applied to bring us to the present. (Again, this is a minimum estimate.) Compounding to 2000, therefore, gives: $ 3.7 trillion X (1.02)^140 (or 16, if you prefer) = $ 59.2 trillion The latter one-time payment would be easy for the USA to make, since its annual GDP is $15 trillion. (Think of a wealthy person's annual salary relative to buying a house in a safe neighborhood.) The USA would not even need to sell any assets to achieve this modest payment. For the 40 million Black slave descendants in the US today, the calculated reparation means that US white society owes each and every Black slave descendant a MINIMUM payment of $ 1.5 million, which is long overdue. After the minimum payment is made, it would be appropriate to calculate and pay the addition reparations that are due. My goal here was to show that these calculations are simple and unambiguous. Understanding the calculated minimum allows one to move forward from that established basis, towards a more realistic reparation number. At the very least, each Black slave descendant can legitimately demand $ 1.5 million payable immediately. An obvious question that arises from this straightforward calculation is: Why are Black leaders not demanding reparation, as a priority demand?

Shirley
Just When I Thought I Had Him – He Left! Dear Gwendolyn: I was married to a wonderful man for 46 years. He is now deceased. I got involved with another man and after dating for about a year he had a heart attack. He underwent by-pass surgery. I took him in and took care of him. When he was able to take care of himself, he became distant towards me and moved out. He moved back to his apartment which was okay with me. He dropped all ties with me. I would call to check on him but he never returned the calls. He just said that he didn’t want to be a bother to anyone. He told me, “You live your life and I will live mine.”
Dear Shirley: You mentioned that you had a wonderful husband for 46 years. Girl, slap yourself on the side of your face because you need a ‘wake-up’ call. I hate to be the one to tell you but your husband may have been on the last train traveling your way. Good men don’t come in abundance – but bad men do. Let me tell you this: When some people become ill, they become humbled and thankful for whatever is being done for them. They are most gracious. On the other hand, there are some people when they become ill, they become mean, evil and cruel. As to your question about this man who will not return your calls, don’t try to force the issue as much as to be a friend. If he becomes ill again, let him go to someone else. This thing of being a part of your life when he needs you and then leaving when he doesn’t makes no sense at all. So, my opinion is to forget him — and do it quick! Gwendolyn Baines is an author, lecturer and syndicated advice columnist. The “Ask Gwendolyn Baines” advice column is distributed by the National Newspaper Publishers’ Association. Something Natural with Deborah Chambers
Stop And Smell The Roses The rose is probably the most celebrated of all flowers. The variety and brilliance is breathtaking. There are over 10,000 species of cultivated rose. The aroma is distinctive and unmistakable. Rose oil is a large component of perfumes and colognes for women and men. However, only a select few perfume manufacturers use the pure essential oil instead of the more “cost effective” synthetic fragrance. It takes 150 pounds of rose petals to make 1 ounce of essential oil. The healing properties of the pure essential oil of rose are as impressive as its beauty. The rose was used for a wide range of disorders dating before the Middle Ages. It was used for digestive problems, headaches, nervous tension, poor circulation, lung diseases, asthma, skin problems, and eye infections. Today, it is best known for its action on mature and maturing skin. It is the least toxic of all essential oils. The Romans used roses for perfumes, garlands, and scented baths. Fresh rose petals in the bath give your skin (and psyche) an exotic treat. Floating in warm bath water, the petals will leave a thin film on the surface. After bathing, collect the petals in a basket to dry. Recycle the dried PAGE 10

petals by adding them to your favorite pot pourri. It is a good practice to “smell the roses” often. Roses have a soothing effect on grief, depression, and resentment. Rose oil even acts as an aphrodisiac for many. It eases nervous stress and tension by triggering the release of the hormone dopamine. Dopamine affects brain processes that control emotional response, and the ability to experience pleasure– so breathe deeply. In therapeutic aromatherapy, the body systems that benefit most from the use of rose essential oil are: nervous system for depression; circulatory system for vascular tone; skin for cellular regeneration; and reproductive for menopausal issues in women. Because of the high potency of the essential oil, just a few drops in a carrier oil or a spray bottle of water will create an effective solution. Under the direction of a certified Aromatherapist, rose can be used in many therapeutic essential oil blends to address a wide range of discomforts. It blends especially well with bergamot to lift the clouds of depression and anxiety. The next time you stop and smell the roses, take time to breathe deeply and let your body experience the true aromatic benefit. Providing services beyond the school day to the students of Lancaster ISD has regularly been a common practice. Whether it’s through tutorials, student organizations, college awareness activities or athletics, Lancaster ISD educators have consistently offered service and support long after the dismissal bell. Due to a recent change in policy from the United States Department of Agriculture, the Lancaster ISD Child Nutrition Department is able to extend its services even further to incorporate a broader category of after-school programs and provide free after-school snacks to even more Lancaster ISD students. “Now, we are currently serving approximately 500 snacks a day,” Director of Child Nutrition Cheryl Richardson said. Bentley Kyle Evans
In the beginning, there was Julia — one of the first American weekly sitcoms to feature an African-American woman (played by Diahann Carroll) in a professional, nonstereotypical role. Prior situation comedies, such as The Beulah Show, which ran on ABC from 1950 to 1952, also starred African Americans in leading roles, but generally they played servants and/or were the heads of broken households, i.e. single mothers. Fast forward to the latter decades of the 20th century and television evolved from the complete, yet constantly struggling family unit depicted on Good Times, to the more successful, middle class AfricanAmerican families portrayed on The Jeffersons, 227, Family Matters and the greatest family show (African American or otherwise) of all time — The Cosby Show. While there have been a number of TV series featuring African Americans in leading roles since The Cosby Show, there has not been a show geared towards African Americans that the entire family can sit down and watch together, since ABC’s My Wife and Kids (now in syndication) ended in 2005. Thanks to veteran Hollywood writer/producer/ director/actor/author Bentley Kyle Evans, the search for a fresh, funny, non-reality family PAGE 13

TV One adds Bentley Kyle Evans’ new sitcom, Family Time, to its Friday primetime lineup show is over. Expanding its offerings of original content, TV One has added Evans’ new sitcom, Family Time, to its Friday primetime lineup. Family Time, a weekly comedy series targeting AfricanAmerican viewers premieres on TV One on January 25, 2013, at 9 pm EST/8 CST. The half-hour show is the latest brainchild of Evans, who is the multi-talented, creative genius behind Martin, The Jamie Foxx Show and Love That Girl. “When you look at TV right now and you’ve got [President] Barack Obama and his beautiful wife and children in the White House, we’re represented there, but we’re not represented from a fictional standpoint,” said Bentley Kyle Evans, creator, writer and producer of Family Time. “I wanted to do something that really represented family. I’m a family guy. Parents are still together after 50 years or so. It’s just something that I wanted to promote — a really good family — and I was even able to put my son in as one of the family members in the show.” Evans originally wrote and independently produced six episodes of Family Time and then shopped it to a few different networks. He believed the Bounce TV network, which is geared towards African Americans, was a good place to test the show with an audience and see how it
would fare in terms of Nielsen ratings. That was the deal that was initially put on the table for Bounce to test it and through

their research they found that the show tested well with an African-American audience. Once Evans took those results to TV One, where he already had his other sitcom, Love That Girl, he says it was a natural fit. Arlington, Texas)—The host of the Dallas-based, nationally syndicated radio show, "Inside Gospel with Frankie Wilson," has been honored with a prestigious 'Stellar Award' given to the best performers in the Gospel music industry. This past weekend, Wilson's program won the award for "National Radio of the Year." The 31-year old Dallas native began his work as a syndicated radio personality after his 7th year working at Mortenson Broadcasting’s KHVN-970am and KGGR-1040am. Full of dynamic, spirit-filled performances and collaborations, other key Stellar Awards show highlights included a special tribute to the late Inez Andrews, this year's recipient of the Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones Legends Award. "The live telecast of the 28th annual Stellar Awards was precedent setting in many ways and far exceeded all of our expectations," said Executive Producer and Central City Productions Chairman Don Jackson. "The anticipation of 'going live' for the first time in the 28 year history of the Stellar Awards created an air of excitement with our entire production crew, co-hosts Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary, as well as all of our nominees, performers and presenters. As a result, it was a historical evening in many ways - from the sold-out seating, to our live backstage online stream and full-tocapacity red carpet and media center, it was a night of 'firsts.' I applaud my entire team for the countless hours spent on pre-production which enabled us to have a smooth and on time event." Other big moments in the show included Tamela Mann's soul-stirring rendition of "Take Me to the King"; a holy-spirit infused traditional medley featuring "I Got This" by Dottie Peoples, "Awesome God" by Maurette Brown Clark, "Draw Me Close" by Marvin Winans and a rousing duet of "Who Would've Thought" by Donnie McClurkin and Marvin Winans that became a foot-stomping, hand-clapping revival. In addition, Marvin Sapp, Charles Jenkins, Israel Houghton & New Breed all delivered powerhouse performances to the delight of the fullto-capacity crowd. The show recognized the great accomplishments of some of Gospel's brightest stars and extraordinary individuals who have made an impact on society. Global inspirational leader, author, producer, philanthropist and entrepreneur Bishop T.D. Jakes received the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award for his 35 years of ministry and humanitarian work. In a moving acceptance speech, Bishop Jakes expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the honor, acknowledging God, his wife, family and supporters for making this day possible. "It has been amazing. When I think back 36 years ago, I would never have imagined I'd be standing here today and I want to say thank you," said Jakes. "In the words of my mother, whenever you see a turtle sitting on a fencepost, always remember he didn't get there by himself." Kurt Carr, protégé to the renowned Reverend Cleveland, received the James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award for his accomplishments, presented by Bishop Paul S. Morton and serenaded by Byron Cage and the Kurt Carr Singers. "To God be the glory, what an incredible honor this is," said Carr. "It's a privilege to write Gospel music and stand on this stage in front of my peers receiving this award," he added. "I thank all of you and Reverend James Cleveland who gave me my start."

In our Medical Center of Plano’s donation has big impact on small non-profit When The Medical Center of Plano opened its doors in 1975, it was a small community hospital. Today, it is a regional medical and trauma center serving much of North Texas and southern Oklahoma, yet it continues its tradition of providing personal and compassionate care to everyone it serves. Staying true to its roots, The Medical Center of Plano decided this year to make a charitable donation to a small, local non-profit which itself personifies dedication to improving lives through personal service. On January 23, 2013, The Medical Center of Plano presented 501(c)(3) non-profit My Very Own Book with a donation of $5,000. MVOB runs reading incentive programs in elementary schools in lowincome neighborhoods in Plano, Richardson, and Dallas ISDs. Students earn awards and new, free books of their choice for reading (or being read to) outside of school hours. Only in their fourth school year, the organization has already given out more than 27,000 new books. Despite this rapid growth, MVOB is still run by an allvolunteer Board, whose members work out of their homes and store books in a
donated space. Volunteers hand select, box up, and personally deliver new books to schools every six weeks. With so little overhead, the generous donation of $5,000 will have a tremendous impact, covering

"My story is just one of many," said Kevin. "There are thousands of African-Americans and people of color around the country who desperately need a bone marrow transplant but can't find a match. "I know there is a match out there, and I want to do everything in my power to find that person who will save the love of my life and Lelah's daddy." Kevin and Lateefah are working with local organizations and volunteers to organize a series of drives in the San Francisco Bay Area. The couple urges African Americans to find and attend a local drive in their communities and to join the Be the Match bone marrow registry. Registering takes just a few minutes, and involves a pre-screening and swab sample of the inside of the cheek. People can also go online to www.marrow.org to order a kit to be sent to their homes.
