Message to the People...

INSIDE I MESSENGER February 1, 2013

If you’ve ever spent a lengthy time in a hospital whether as a patient or visiting a patient, there are going to be things that you notice that will make you say “this is a good place” or either you’ll make anyone close to you vow that even if you are on your death bed, you don’t want to ever step foot on the premises again. For almost two months, I was back and forth to Methodist Charlton Medical Center because unfortunately two of my recently relocated family members had to be hospitalized. Of course I repeatedly asked my relatives if they were comfortable and I watched closely as staff interacted and responded to requests from my relatives. I watched for the good and bad signs because I didn’t want to hear any complaining!

IMAJ 4

Food, nursing staff, facility and doctors received glowing reports. I was surprised even when I got a positive report on one relative’s new doctor because prior to her entering the hospital we visited the doctor in his office and she was NOT impressed at all. Now the emergency room is another story or column. But one thing that would Cheryl Smith change reports about the emergency room would be if people would stop using it as their primary care physician. I sat in the emergency room with one relative for about an hour before she was seen and during that hour, I did not see one gunshot victim, no heart attacks and only one extreme case of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; which was my relative. There wasn’t even a car accident victim! Instead you had the colds, back pains, a few minor asthma attacks and many flu-like symptoms. I overheard one woman talking on the phone, explaining to the person on the other end, that she couldn’t talk long because she was at the doctor’s office. NO! She wasn’t at the doctor’s office, but if you talk to some of the people waiting for care; they are doing so because they won’t have to pay right away or they don’t have a doctor to visit. Instead they sit for five or six hours, sometimes more, waiting to be seen. Clearly these situations were NOT emergencies! These people, as one hospital official observed, should take advantage of the local urgent-care clinics or make a doctor’s appointment and use the hospital emergency room for emergencies.

Ask Gwen

So, you don’t know what constitutes an emergency. Well, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) says the following warning signs indicate a medical emergency.

• • • • •

• •

Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath Chest or upper abdominal pain or pressure Fainting, sudden dizziness, weakness Changes in vision Confusion or changes in mental status Any sudden or severe pain

• • • • •

Far be it for me to diagnose the patients I saw, but staffers and experts note that the growing trend, whether it is to avoid a co• pay or because it seems easy, is for folks to show up at the emergency room rather than the doctor’s office. And you have folks still decrying OBAMACARE!

Debra Chambers 14

Uncontrolled bleeding Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea Coughing or vomiting blood Suicidal feelings Difficulty speaking Shortness of breath Unusual abdominal pain

Now back to my relative. One’s stay lasted six weeks, while the other was limited to a two-week stay. To say that visiting my relatives was at times challenging as I honored visiting hours, met their requests, and divided my time equitably between the two. There were times I spent the night and that’s when I really got to observe everyone in action. Not only were they courteous to me, they were very accommodating. What really stuck out in my mind was as I walked the halls, from one room on one floor to another room on a different floor and another wing of the hospital, everyone wearing a hospital badge spoke to me. I guess it is the culture, coming from the top down, that employees will speak. Talk about a nice touch! There were times when I was totally exhausted and a smile and a pleasant voice would greet me. It made all the difference in the world. I talked to a few of the “officials” and expressed my pleasure with the service, level of professionalism and pleasant attitudes that I observed from the emergency room to the cafeteria and the security officers to the technicians and housekeeping. We all know that when people don’t feel well, or they are dealing with pain or death the last thing they need is to deal with bad attitudes. Sure someone is going to say, “everyone” isn’t nice, and maybe some folks will let their bad days show through, but for the most part, the customer service that I witnessed should be a case study for all businesses.

So, when I heard that Methodist Charlton Medical Center was presented the Pioneer Award at the recent Duncanville Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet, I could understand why. According to chamber officials, “The Pioneer award is presented to a

business or person involved in public or community service activities that enhance the quality of life for Duncanville citizens. Methodist Charlton’s involvement in the Duncanville chamber and the community includes sponsorships and free health screenings at community events, and representation on the Duncanville Chamber Board.”

“Methodist Charlton is a true partner in business with the Duncanville Chamber and our community, and they have truly enhanced the quality of life for citizens,” said Duncanville Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Steve Martin. I have to agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Martin. It is also important to note that more than Duncanville citizens are benefiting from the efforts of the team of professionals at Methodist Charlton Medical Center.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT... Reverend Jackson and Rainbow/PUSH call for federal intervention in Chicago Chicago, IL — Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. And Rainbow PUSH Coalition call for immediate Federal Intervention and Homeland Security in Chicago as January homicide totals exceeded 45. This morning, in Chicago, a woman’s van was riddled with bullets as she was executed on a major highway. Two days ago, a 15-year-old Dr. Martin Luther King College Prep honor student, who had recently performed as a majorette at the President’s inaugural ceremony, was killed after trying to seek shelter from the rain less than a mile away from the President’s home. Another student was shot but survived. The gunman is still at large. Days before these tragedies, seven people were killed, six from gunshots, all in one day; most of their murders have been unsolved. Reverend Jesse Jackson reaffirms that gun control reform is critical and the ban on assault weapons paramount. Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. said, “With each passing shot, the call for gun reform becomes more critical because of the stinging pain of past tragedies; we must work diligently to break this cycle of violence to prevent future tragedies.” Please join Rev. Jesse L. President Obama stands on the shoulders of 50 years of history By Marc H. Morial

“You can kill a man, but you can’t kill an idea.” - Slain Civil Rights leader, Medgar Evers

When President Obama took the oath of office on Monday, he was surrounded by an extraordinary legacy of 50-year civil rights milestones that helped make possible his second inauguration. It is fitting that the inaugural invocation was delivered on the steps of the U.S. Capitol by Myrlie Evers-Williams, the widow of civil rights hero, Medgar Evers. After years of risking his life to end discrimination against black Mississippians, Evers was felled by an assassin’s bullet in the driveway of his home 50 years ago on June 12, 1963. Whether serving his country as a soldier in World War II, or leading the fight to desegregate the University of Mississippi, or working to end Jim Crow as the state’s first NAACP field director, Medgar Evers was a fearless, peaceful warrior who paved the way for President Obama and countless others who have been inspired by his example. An assassin cut short his life

in 1963, but Myrlie Evers-Williams went on to devote her life, as an NAACP leader and civil rights activist, to the ideas he fought and died for. Medgar Evers, ironically was killed on June 12th, just hours after President John F. Kennedy delivered a nationally televised speech in support of civil rights. President Kennedy, himself, was assassinated only five months later, 50 years ago, on November 22, 1963. President Obama took the oath of office holding a bible belonging to another champion of civil rights and American democracy – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Fifty years ago, on August 28, 1963, Dr. King inspired America and the entire world with his “I Have a Dream Speech” delivered at the Lincoln Memorial in front of more than 250,000 people during the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The March was organized by Dr. King with help from the National Urban League’s Whitney M. Young, along with A. Philip Randolph of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, James Farmer of the Congress of Racial Equality, John Lewis of the Southern Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, and Roy Wilkins of the NAACP. The March on Washington was instrumental in the passage of the

Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Finally, President Obama was sworn-in 50 years after one of the most horrific events of the civil rights era, the 1963 bombing of Birmingham, Alabama’s 16th Street Baptist Church, which resulted in the deaths of four little black girls – Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley, all 14 years old, and 11-year-old Denise McNair. The Birmingham church bombing galvanized the conscience of the nation and led many whites to denounce racism and its brutal consequences. Those four young black girls did not die in vain. As Dr. King said in his eulogy, their deaths, “…say to each of us, black and white alike, that we must substitute courage for caution. They say to us that we must be concerned not merely about who murdered them, but about the system, the way of life, the philosophy which produced the murderers. Their death says to us that we must work passionately and unrelentingly for the realization of the American dream.” Fifty years later, America’s first black President takes the Oath of Office for the second time. Marc Morial is the president /CEO of the National Urban League and former mayor of New Orleans.

Celebrating Black History Month By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Since 1976 we have observed February as Black History Month – a commemoration to honor the achievements and contributions of African Americans to the United States. Throughout history, African American men and women have made invaluable contributions to our Nation, and have played an essential role in shaping this country’s story and identity. Because of the hardships that those who came before us had to endure, we can live in a country where

equality and justice can be achieved. This year the theme of Black History Month is “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality”, and celebrates landmark events in American history – 150th anniversary of Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring “all persons held as slaves” in rebellious states “shall be then, thence forward and forever free.” In March 1963, hundreds of thousands of Americans marched and witnessed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. give his famous “I Have A Dream” speech. Historians

credit the march on Washington as playing a key role that led to the enactment of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. African Americans continue to contribute to our nation and to make great strides. Last month we re-elected the first African American President of the United States to his second term. Although we have come a long way on the path to righting injustices, we must continue to work to achieve equality for people all over the world. As we reflect on the oppression that our ancestors endured, we must continue to move towards a day when all Americans can achieve their version of the American Dream.”

Ask Gwen

can I get rid of her?

Robert Dear Robert:

My sister is a sneaky snake! Dear Gwen: For the past 25 years I have been in the music business. My sister and her husband started a business at that time. They made money. In fact, they became rich. This is the problem: During the years of their money-making, they never offered to assist me in any way with my career. Now they are broke. He spent the money on his family and on ladies of the street, not to leave out his drinking buddies. They all got the money. Last week I had to stop my sister from constantly saying “we” can do this and “we” can do that. I found it most irritating. My record was released a few months ago – and is rising up the charts. I dare my sister to think I am stupid enough to allow her to become involved with my life at this point. I have struggled so hard and for so long. How

Hold your money and she will go away. You don’t have to disconnect her as your sister, but just don’t connect her with your bank account. She didn’t connect you to hers. Let her know you have no intentions of bringing her into your success. Let me tell you this: I want you to be sure to have an accountant. You will need to hire two. You know. An accountant to audit the other accountant. I also want you to enroll in a business course. Remember this: Don’t get so busy recording and performing you fail to look after your financial affairs. Too many artists end up broke without a dime to spend due to this type error. Oprah Winfrey has often stated that when she informed Bill Cosby of her talk show deal, he told her to sign her own checks. Robert, think about it. Money can go away fast when you entrust someone else --- to control it. ***Got a problem? Don’t solve it alone. Write to Gwendolyn Baines at: P. O. Something Natural with Deborah Chambers

Choosing A Qualified Aromatherapist As communicated in previous articles, aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to assist the body in healing itself. It can be a very useful addition to many treatment plans. Although the use of aromatherapy is safe enough to be done at home, consulting with a certified aromatherapist can be a great help in choosing the right essential oils and the best methods for their use. Practitioners of aromatherapy in the United States receive certification through course work and clinical training. Referrals from massage therapists, chiropractors, or other licensed practitioners who employ the use of natural complementary approaches, are a good way of finding a qualified aromatherapist. A private consultation with an aromatherapist can in many situations be an addition to an existing medical treatment plan. The role of the aromatherapist is to provide knowledge about the use of essential oils and how they can be used to improve or support a physical or emotional concern. In a professional consultation, the therapist will need to know your general medical history and the reason you are seeking counseling. Your level of stress and/or discomfort will be assessed. This assessment plays an important role in determining the method of application of an aromatic approach. PAGE 14

!

A focused aromatherapist will prepare for the consultation with a list of questions answered before the visit. There are literally hundreds of essential oils available for use. The knowledgeable therapist will be able to target an appropriate category of essential oils for the client based on a welldeveloped questionnaire. Perhaps the best part of an aromatherapy consultation is experiencing all of the aromatic possibilities in approaching an issue. The reaction of the client to the aroma of an essential oil is critical in the selection process. The goal is to select an essential oil or create a formula that is pleasing to the senses; thereby ensuring consistent use. Ground coffee is often used to clear the olfactory passages after smelling an aroma during a private consultation. The most important thing to remember when using aromatherapy or any other health related modality is to listen to your body. Make mental note of (or record in a journal) how you feel before and after an aromatherapy application. Approaching health and wellness through aromatherapy with a qualified aromatherapist is a cooperative effort that begins and ends with paying attention to your body and its signals. Since 2005 it has serviced 929 former inmates with a program teaching technical and social skills designed to prevent them from returning to prison. Participants are also given job placement assistance. Approximately 200 people, of all races, complete the program each year. The program, funded with a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, has performed so well that its recidivism rate is only eight percent, much lower than the state’s rate. Participants are taught job skills, given transportation assistance and helped with clothing. At least two participants, after completing the program, opened their owned businesses and hired others who were former inmates.

They are projecting prison growth based on the failure rates of second and third graders. As a society we must prove them wrong. We must support programs such as the one run by the Urban League and others. All men and women who make mistakes in life should not be stored away and allowed to deteriorate. We have to do all we can to restore them, particularly those who deserve a second chance.
