I’ve always loved reading stories about Harriet Tubman. She always seemed larger than life because she was strong when men were weak. It was especially a joy for me to sit in class with one of her descendants, who was over 50 years older than I, back at Florida A&M University, in the late 1970s. Just to share the same space with the relative of someone so dynamic, was an honor for me-- and actually the entire class, including the professor appeared to feel the same way. Just saying the name “Harriet Tubman” gives me reason to pause. She is the epitome of “lifting as we climb.” Cheryl Smith This valiant woman achieved her own freedom and went back to help others. She wasn’t content with gaining just her freedom, and that is admirable! I love one of the most memorable quotes that is attributed to her: “I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.” Over a century later that profound statement is significant to me because even today we have people who will fight efforts to help them because they don’t understand what is really going on in their lives. Harriet Tubman’s story should be shared with every young child. Her story will teach them how to resolve conflicts, honor commitments, overcome obstacles; and more. Next week Congressional Members and Leadership from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, National Organization for Women, National Urban League and the National Council of Negro Women will hold a press conference to advocate for passage of federal legislation that would create national historical parks – in both Maryland and New York – in honor of Harriet Ross Tubman, the prominent conductor of the Underground Railroad. The Harriet Tubman National Historical Parks Act introduced in the 111th, 112th and 113th Congresses by U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, is a bill to establish two National Historical Parks. The establishment of two national historical parks in honor of Harriet Tubman is an important economic and historical initiative for the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Auburn, New York. Economically, these parks would be significant new resource, bringing in substantial revenue to our communities and creating jobs. In addition, there is immense grassroots support for honoring freedom fighter and American hero Harriet Ross Tubman with two national parks in preparation for her March 10, 2013 centennial commemoration. Hopefully you will support the effort. Too often the contributions of women are not given their just due. What makes a true heroine: Share Harriet Tubman’s story. Enough said!

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

Volunteering doesn't end with the New Year By Ollie Besteiro, AARP Texas

We've just finished up with the biggest volunteer season of the year. Over Thanksgiving and Christmas, we collect blankets and coats, help out at soup kitchens, and give to our favorite charities. What happens when those holidays are over? Valentine's Day is right around the corner. How many make it a yearly tradition to volunteer on Valentine's Day? After the flowers, chocolates and dinners reserved for those closest to us: husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, children... When is there time to volunteer? Outside the holiday season, it can be time consuming just finding ways to volunteer, not to mention finding ways to fit them into our busy schedules. AARP's Create the Good is a great tool for anyone looking for ways to continue volunteering, but on a limited time budget. Activities found on createthegood.org take anywhere from 5 minutes, to 5 hours, to 5 days a week. More importantly, they’re all listed in one place. For Valentine's Day, Create the Good suggests having a senior valentine. The day can be a lonely time for anyone who’s lost someone, and that population is largest among older Americans. According to the Administration on Aging in 2009, 41% of women and 13% of men age 65+ were widowed. Why not invite a neighbor or co-worker to lunch who wouldn't otherwise have plans for the day? If you’re a senior with no plans for Valentine's Day, grab some friends and organize a dinner or outing together. Volunteering is about bringing joy to others, no matter what day of the year it is. Simple acts of volunteering create benefits for everyone. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life. Older volunteers receive even greater benefits from volunteering as the activity provides physical and social opportunities. Everyone can afford to be a little healthier. Create the Good has ideas for a variety of people with different skill sets, time restraints and interests. Some examples that can be found on the website include offering to help a new mom in the neighborhood by watching the baby while she catches up on chores or simply takes some time to herself, escorting a senior to the grocery store, tutoring at an elementary school, or posting heart healthy tips on bulletin boards and social media. As we move past the holiday season and settle back into work and school, check out ways you can use your talents to give back throughout the year. Knowing that you are helping others and improving your own health, why not make 2013 the year to volunteer? Go to createthegood.org to learn more about ways to volunteer.

Silence on anti-immigrant initiatives was good to hear By Sen. Carlos Uresti

When Gov. Rick Perry laid out his goals for the 83rd Legislature in his State of the State address, he called for tax cuts, more school choice, infrastructure investment, a probusiness climate, and a rejection of Medicaid expansion called for by the Affordable Care Act. Important issues all. But just as important is what the governor left out of his biennial report to state lawmakers — any mention of sanctuary cities, Voter ID, or other legislative initiatives targeting Texas' growing Hispanic population. The omission was welcome to lawmakers like me who fought hard in the last session against such measures. When the 2011 session began, sanctuary cities and Voter ID were declared emergencies that required immediate attention. Both houses passed the Voter ID bill and, later, redistricting plans that ignored the population gains of Latinos across Texas. Sanctuary cities

passed the Senate in a special session, but stumbled in the House. The legislative victories of Voter ID and redistricting were short-lived, however. The courts rejected Voter ID as unconstitutional and ordered adjustments in the political boundaries that were used in the 2012 election. Given the legislative majority's zeal to pass these measures two years ago, one might expect an aggressive attempt to reverse that 3-0 record in the current session. Fortunately, that doesn't appear to be the case. While these issues could still resurface, they are certainly not a priority. With Texas' Hispanic population continuing to grow into a potent political force, it is not surprising that there is so little appetite this time for such divisive immigration proposals in the Legislature. Also, the 2012 election showed that minorities are already exerting their influence at the ballot box nationally, and polls indicate that most Americans are eager for immigration reform that's not just strict, but also fair and compassionate. There is a growing realization that Hispanics in Texas are not going to

listen to a wider Republican message that is tainted with the anti-immigrant attitude that pervaded the last legislative session. Steve Munisteri, chairman of the Republican Party of Texas, recently told The Dallas Morning News: “If somebody thinks you don’t like them because of their race or ethnic background, it doesn’t matter if they agree with you on 99 out of 100 issues. They’re not going to vote for you. We have adopted a change in tone, hopefully, and a reexamination of how we were messaging, and we did that way before the election.” As chairman of the Senate Hispanic Caucus, I welcome that change of tone, even if it was spurred by nothing more than political necessity. It will make it easier for lawmakers of both parties to come together on a whole range of important issues as the session proceeds. A good deal of the governor's State of the State address was great to hear, but when he didn't raise those issues that are so offensive to Hispanics, the silence was golden.

Improving Our Brain Health By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Scientists tell us that the brain is the most important component of the human body. It determines the rate of our heartbeats, our mobility, our sight, our memories, our speech patterns and a number of other significant functions. When there is no longer any brain activity, the human body is declared clinically dead. Perhaps the most significant institution in the country that studies the human brain is the Center for Brain Health within the University of Texas at Dallas system, located at 2200 West Mockingbird Lane. There researchers are studying how the brain functions and the roots of its learning process, how to protect the brain from disabling diseases, how to restore brain function once damage has occurred and methods to construct healthier brains.

During a meeting with its founder and chief director, Dr. Sandra Chapman, members of my staff and I learned that the Center was working with three major groups that are crucial to the wellness of our society. They are soldiers returning from battle, school children and senior citizens. Soldiers are being taught how to make smooth transitions from activities on battlefields. Emphasis is placed on teaching them how to become successful and productive members of civilian society. A program titled “teen smart” demonstrates to young people how to think critically, and suggests paths that prepare them for the future. The program for seniors helps them to develop skills that assist with decision making, and identifies ways to recognize and divert cognitive decline. The Center’s programs are not only important for North Texas, but are relevant and necessary for the entire nation. They give us hope. The focus of the scientific research at the Center includes autism, strokes, brain injury, attention deficit

disorder, addictions, post-traumatic stress, and Alzheimer’s disease. Funding from the stimulus package passed by Congress has enabled the Center to conduct important and necessary research. Most recently the Center’s highly regarded Medical Science Director, Dr. John Hart, published a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association that is helpful to the National Football League and its players. Under his leadership, the Center has launched an institute for professional athletes that researches brain health issues associated with sports related brain injuries. There is no other place in the country, I believe, where the intracacies of the brain are being studied and researched like they are at the Center for Brain Health. Before long scientists from across the world will be coming to the Center to witness and emulate its programs. This amazing facility is located in the Congressional District that I am proud to represent, and I encourage all of you to become familiar with the vital work that it is doing.

Ask Gwen My boyfriend wants me to help him buy our house! Dear Gwendolyn: I have been going with a man for eight years. He has not yet proposed, but wants me to help him buy ‘our’ house. He says that because he is not divorced, it would not be wise for him to put my name on the deed. Gwendolyn, since I have put eight years into this relationship, do you think I should stay in it – or dissolve the relationship 100%? I want to be happy like other women who are married, but I don’t want to continue being dangled on a string. We met when I was 19. Now at 27 I think I should move on. He tells me I cannot get someone else. Juanita Dear Juanita: Do not allow yourself to be stomped into the ground by the foolish sayings of a man – no man.

Allow me to share a story with you: There was a young lady who lived in our neighborhood who was excited about moving into a house her boyfriend had just purchased. He had her to pick out the furniture – down to the carpet on the floor and the draperies at the windows. Then, guess what…on moving day, he moved another woman into that house. The girl had a breakdown and was put into the state mental hospital facility. Last I heard she was still there and that has been years ago. Please, do not be that girl. Love can hurt so much until sometimes a woman (or a hurt man) just can’t take it. Let me tell you this: You were not thinking. You state he is married. In that case Juanita, why haven’t you let him go? He may never get a divorce and if he does, like the lady in the neighborhood, you may not be his choice. Think about it. Men misuse women every day. I see they have gone from the three short words of “I love you” to the three letter one word of — our. (Copyright © 2012 by Gwendolyn L. Baines)

Making Aromatherapy part of your daily Health Maintenance Routine The best defense to disease is maintaining a constant offense of ridding your personal space of bacteria, viruses, and the like. Aromatherapy is one of the most natural, ways to achieve and maintain a healthier environment. When incorporated as a part of your daily routine it can lead to faster healing of skin abrasions, fewer colds, faster relief of tension headaches, and many other physical conditions. Aromatherapy is a natural, noninvasive approach that helps the whole person and assists the body's natural ability to balance and maintain itself through the use of essential oils. It has been used for thousands of years and is the basis for modern day pharmacology. Essential oils are the natural extracts obtained from aromatic plants. disease and unhealthy environments. Circulation, particularly in the hands and feet, can be a problem for the aging. Geranium blended with a base oil can be used as an effective body rub to strengthen and support the circulatory system. Massage from the hands to the elbow and from the foot to the knee. Rosemary essential oil can be used to encourage concentration and focus. Fresh rosemary has a pleasant aroma that stimulates as well as provides healing to the bronchial passages. Eucalyptus has long-been known to provide relief to blocked sinuses. It is also an effective disinfectant that can even be used in the laundry! Getting a good night’s sleep plays a major role in a good health maintenance routine. Lavender actually causes your brain to trigger the production of serotonin, the body’s natural response to relaxation. Lightly misting sheets and pillowcases with true (not synthetic) lavender linen water before retiring almost assures a restful sleep with a refreshed morning wake-up. These are just a few of the many ways that aromatherapy can be incorporated into your everyday health maintenance routine. The important point is that it is completely natural. In today’s world of synthetic and smells-justlike-the-real-thing products, the simple natural approach to your health is one that will give your body all it needs to win the battle of disease and discomfort. NAACP mourns loss of Activist Anita McNeil (Wilson, NC) – The national office of the NAACP was informed by the North Carolina NAACP State Conference that Anita McNeil, the wife of John McNeil and the biggest advocate for his freedom from an unjust murder sentence, passed away this Saturday. Anita McNeil was fighting her second bout with cancer. She had continued traveling and speaking out for her husband’s freedom even as she underwent chemotherapy. Anita last saw her husband in September 2012, when she was able to spend three hours with him, eighteen months after their previous visit. “Anita’s love for her husband knew no limits, and she was relentless in her campaign for his freedom, stated NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock. “Even as she battled illness she shone with the radiance of her righteous cause. Her energy was enough to reduce an audience to tears and then lift them back up again determined to join her fight to secure justice for her husband John McNeil. “Anita was a woman of boundless faith, stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “She had no doubt that the arc of the universe would bend toward justice for her husband. We will carry on the torch of her passion and double down on our demand for John McNeil’s freedom.

FEBRUARY 8, 2013

“Our warrior sister, Anita, has transitioned to be with God, stated NAACP North Carolina State Conference President Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II. “I had just prayed with her and the family. We told her we all loved her and were better because we knew her. She could not talk back, but I'm confident she heard it in the spirit. Now as she reigns with the angels, let us imitate her courage and strength and commitment to do right until our day comes. “This is a sad day, stated NAACP Georgia State Conference President Edward Dubose. “Anita spent her later years with a singular dedication to righting the wrong that had been done to her husband. She would have wanted us to continue her virtuous campaign. Though we lost a brave soul this weekend, we are dedicating to freeing that soul’s counterpart here on Earth, John McNeil. In 2006, McNeil was convicted for shooting Brian Epp on his property after Mr. Epp threatened his son with a box cutter and charged at John, with the weapon in his pocket. The investigating officers concluded that McNeil did not commit a crime, but 294 days after the incident McNeil was charged with murder and sentenced to life in prison. The campaign for John McNeil’s freedom was begun by his local NAACP branch in Wilson, NC, which convinced the North Carolina NAACP, Georgia NAACP State Conference, Cobb County NAACP and national NAACP to take up the fight.

NEW E-BOOK, "SON OF KENYA (OBAMA'S MOTHERLAND)"

deaths awaited anyone not obeying the government. This new e-book illustrates Kenyans, who voiced for free elections and democracy under a dictatorship while President Jomo Kenyatta (known and referred to in Kenya as "The Big Man") ruled Kenya. Turner explores the assassinations of Tom Mboya, Barack Obama Sr., and many others

According to the e-book, the children at the Orphanage School taught the author about the Barack Obama legend (Son of Kenya) to help his rehabilitation and memory function again. The e-book explores the legacy of Tom Mboya, who the author feels was Africa's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Mboya was gunned down at noontime, downtown, in broad daylight,

by an assassin wearing tribal Kikuyu attire. According to the e-book, Mboya's faithful friend, Barack Obama Sr., was near the assassination and his honest testimony, what he had seen, at the trial hearings ended his political career. This caused several hit and run assassination attempts on his life. The author discusses the large cloud of suspicion around the hit and run accident, that finally killed him. Turner poses a number of questions: What did Obama see? Why did Obama's court testimony infuriate President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya and get him fired? Who were the responsible person(s) for his assassination? In addition to the e-book, he is now accepting "donations" to help orphan schools in Kenya. He comments, "No contribution is too small or too big because the orphanage needs clothes, books, supplies, food, and water." Interested ones can make a donation by going to http:// sono(enya.wordpress.com The e-book "Son of Kenya (Obama's Motherland)" is available for purchase online at: Amazon.com - http://dld.bz/ cbfn2 BarnesandNoble.com http://dld.bz/cb)h. Turner is also the author of the following ebooks: Minorities Deceived, Kenya Rehabilitation, The New Plumbing Guide, and Plumber Speaks.

-- Author sees injustices in elections and voting in Kenya, Africa --- In his new e-book, "Son of Kenya (Obama's Motherland)", author Sherman Turner was inspired to write about his experience facing many unique types of discrimination in America, and then compare his African experience in Kenya under a dictatorship, where he witnessed that there were no free elections or free voting because assassination

AFT Executive Council endorses Bar-like Assessment for Teachers Washington—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten released the following statement on the AFT executive council’s adoption of the recent report issued by the AFT Teacher Preparation Task Force, “Raising the Bar: Aligning and Elevating Teacher Preparation and the Teaching Profession.” “The world is changing at breakneck speed, and so are the knowledge and skills educators need so they can help students be prepared for life, career and college. That’s where the AFT’s task force report “Raising the Bar” comes in—to accomplish our work, we must raise the professional standards for teachers and align them with what kids need to succeed in the 21st century. It’s well past time to end the sorry tradition of tossing brand-new teachers the keys to their classrooms and leaving them to see if they and their students sink or swim. This is unfair to both students and their teachers. “Teaching, like the medical, legal and other professions, must have a universal, rigorous, multidimensional entry assessment to ensure that a new teacher possesses the required knowledge and skills to be a caring, competent and confident classroom professional. The report outlines such an assessment’s components, which include completing a yearlong clinical experience, knowing one's content and basic teaching skills—like classroom management and differentiating instruction—and

demonstrating that knowledge in real-life clinical classroom situations. It makes clear this ‘bar-like’ process is for prospective teachers and in lieu of, rather than in addition to, the processes that exist today. “As in these other professions, those with the primary responsibility for setting and enforcing the standards of our profession should be the professionals themselves—in our case, educators, not those who haven’t taught or prepared teachers and have never walked in our shoes. “All stakeholders—teachers and teacher educators, state education chiefs and education boards, accrediting agencies, and education associations and unions—must help end the patchwork processes we have now. We must work together to ensure that teacher preparation standards, programs and assessments are aligned with a well-grounded vision of effective teaching. “After a great discussion, the AFT officers and executive council embraced the report’s recommendations and agenda for action. AFT teachers and teacher educators will now move forward with other invested parties as we work with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards to design the standards and assessment prescribed by the report. Development and implementation of this assessment will give educators at all levels real ownership of their profession.”

What would have happened on September 11th if the CIA had followed through on the tips and clues leading up to the greatest attack in American history? Many Americans would like to change the deeds that led to this fateful day. Michael C. Larnard II explores the alternate result that could have been achieved had a black ops unit intercepted those responsible and made them pay for past crimes. This brutal rewrite of Nine Eleven details the sadistic actions of those who assaulted the innocent and plotted the attack. Consider the possible outcome had a mission been carried out that thwarted the planned assault and achieved just another success that went unknown to Americans. ********
