Message to the People...

I MESSENGER March 1, 2013

What could be more important than educating our children? Too often I listen to the complaints and grumblings about what is happening with our youth. Admittedly I add to the conversations but my focus usually is on those responsible for providing an education, not those responsible for receiving. Why are so many educators afraid of the children they are charged with educating? Could it possibly be that the parents are out of control and acting inappropriately?

IMAJ 4

Recently I visited a high school and the security guard explained that no longer could I walk through the halls without an escort. It seems more than a few parents had recently visited the school and actually fought with the teachers. Where’s the fire?!

Cheryl Smith

There was a time that the teacher was one of the most respected people in our communities but now times have changed.

The teachers were like second parents to the students and every successful person I have ever talked to would mention some teacher, counselor or coach who had a positive impact on their lives. Unfortunately today the headlines tell a different story. We’re reading about more and more cases of sexually inappropriate behavior between teachers and students. Male and female teachers are in courtrooms because of alleged molestation charges. Most recently a day-care school owner stood before a judge charged with three counts of lewd acts upon a child under the age of 14. Fortunately the center had been closed and Enrique Ramos sits in jail on a $1.3 million bond. Sadly however there are a reported three victims but officials speculate that there are more! Where’s the fire?! Equally brutal and abusive is not having the resources available for our students to learn. Recently I visited with Thomas Muhammad and long-time educator Dr. Roscoe Smith and we discussed the many crises in education. The two are members of the Coalition for an Accountable System of Education (CASE). The following statement was released by CASE: The Summit on the Education of African American students in the Da!as Independent School District has been rescheduled to April 5-6. The summit's sponsor, CASE, chose to reschedule the event so that the community can support the March 23 domestic violence ra!y hosted by Da!as Mayor Mike Rawlings. We support our children by joining this ra!y because domestic violence has a negative impact on academic achievement. This city is faced with two issues that are so critical and therefore need immediate attention, said CASE Chief Education Officer, Dr. Roscoe C. Smith. One issue is domestic violence. The other issue is the academic achievement of African American students in the DISD. To assist our students, CASE is sponsoring a Summit on the Education of African American students in the DISD &om 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, and &om 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 6 at the Friendship West Baptist Church; 2020 West Wheatland Road; Da!as, Texas. CASE is asking the entire community to come out to assist with this Summit. This City cannot afford to be divided on these two issues. Our children are counting on us. They need us a! working together. Officials have been invited &om the community, city, county, state and the federal levels. Now the summit is being held to address issues and provide solutions, not for a talkfest or venting session.

Tracey Edmonds 12

Some parents are clueless about the many issues their children are facing in school. Lawmakers are battling at the local, state and national level as we witness the cutting of services and the laying off of teachers. The truancy courts are overflowing and teen pregnancy and STDs are at pandemic proportions. Where’s the fire?! According to Mr. Muhammad and Mr. Smith, the Summit is being hosted with DISD Superintendent Mike Miles and invitations have been extended to representatives from the Obama Administration, elected officials and some of the top education gurus in the country.

Hopefully there will be some psychologists and sociologists, in attendance. It would also be great if there is a large contingent from the business community because we all know that a poor school district is bad for business. And when we solve all of the issues like qualified educators, equipment, supplies, books, curricula, etc., we can also deal with other issues--those societal issues that contribute to the demolishing of the education process. Maybe the principals at Barack Obama Academy or Muhammad’s School of Islam can be in attendance to discuss how they are able to get the best out of our young boys. Why don’t they have sagging problems or disrespectful antifemale behavior? There are so many trying to do the right thing but they need the right resources, support, reinforcement and tools. We’re at a serious crossroads where great teachers are saying they are tired. They have to fight the administration, the children and the parents. Where’s the fire?! It’s time to get fired up and really save our children!

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson joins other Women members to address concerns about impact of sequestration on women and children

MARCH 1, 2013

A HIGHWAY TO FREEDOM THE QUEST FOR PEACE As we stand here today, At the crossroads of freedom and equality, The celebration of the emancipation proclamation must not become a novelty. That great march was the start, To engage a nations heart, To pull back the veil of discrimination and oppression And to cease and release the rights of a people, And honor our Declarations intended predilections. And though we have lived to behold A man of color residing in our countries most prestigious house, There is still so much work to do, We must remain vigilant and persistent, Of this there can be no doubt.

Congresswoman Johnson stands with Democratic Leader Pelosi and women of the Democratic Caucus to emphasize the effects that the sequester will have on America’s women

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson joined a press conference with women Members of the Democratic Caucus to stress the impact the upcoming budget cuts will have on women and families. In the state of Texas, approximately 600,000 women and children would be dropped from the Department of Agriculture’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) from March through September. Head Start and Early Head Start services would be eliminated for approximately 4,800 children in Texas, reducing access to critical early education. Close to 2,300 disadvantaged and vulnerable children could lose access to child care. Congresswoman Johnson stated after the press conference, “Women and children will

be hit the hardest by the sequester. Programs like Head Start and child care services, the vital services that the American people depend on everyday to care for their families, will be eliminated for thousands of women. The GOP is asking women and children to bear the burden of the sequester, and that is disgraceful.” “The American people need to know the consequences of these budget cuts, and how many women and children will be severely affected. The sequester will be detrimental to the growth of our economy and the investments we have made for our future,” Congresswoman Johnson noted. “We are doing a disservice to the American people by allowing these cuts to take place, and I urge my Republican colleagues to seriously consider the harm they are causing to our country.”

His coming was the hailing of an inspired notion, That we can be what we choose when motivated by devotion. He exemplifies that we are not separate and often more than equal, His second term in office is a historic sequel. We must strive to bring liberation through education. We must teach our sons and daughters To look beyond their situations. Let us inspire them to nurture and caress their dreams, For then shall we all be able to lift our voices and sing. Like Martin we must live our dreams, Like Malcolm we must do what is necessary, Like Medgar we need to have the courage To not let our voices be buried. Let us unite and work to bring calm To the chaos in our streets, For then and only then Shall we know the majesty Of that elusive jewel known as peace. ZEMILL Copyright 2013 All Rights Reserved. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT... By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Recently an editorial appeared in a local daily newspaper that misrepresented my role in a proposed development project in South Dallas. I want to share with you my response to the editorial. My constituents know my record and understand my commitment to serve them.

************* Your editorial entitled “Make the Dirt Fly,” written on February 14th, is more fiction than reality. It is layered with numerous untruths and omits the role that my office has played to bring sustainable projects to neighborhoods located near the Veterans Administration Hospital in South Dallas. The basis of the editorial rests upon the testimony of a single developer whose actions are uncertain, while others question whether he is fully committed to the development of Veterans Place. As recently as last month, I met with the developer concerning the project. On at least two occasions, I have met with his consultant, and I have spent time with Dallas City Hall officials to see how this project could become a reality. The editorial quotes the developer as saying that federal approval was absent. The developer has asked the federal government to give him a guarantee that it would lease space from him if the project were completed. The problem is a developer who wants a commitment from the Veterans Administration that is unlawful. The editorial also unjustly assigns blame to certain groups for delays on the project. The City of Dallas has already set aside $4.4 million for this project. The VA had the land appraised by a third party, and offered to purchase the land from the developer. The developer initially had the land appraised at approximately $15 million. When that figure was disputed, he agreed to a $5.2 million appraisal by an independent appraiser. The developer ultimately agreed to the terms of a contract to sell the property to the Veterans Administration. The developer then rescinded the deal at the last minute in hopes of retaining some ownership of the property. The real obstruction to progress is not a lack of communication within a public-private partnership, but one of securing proportionate funding from private sources. The City of Dallas has taken legitimate steps to reasonably plan and fund the Veterans Place project. Unfortunately, the developer has relied overwhelmingly on public funds to move this project forward. The “pre-development costs” that he has offered would be a fraction of the total costs, and would place a disproportionate risk on the City of Dallas. As for the development of Southern Dallas and the creation of housing and retail space, I have worked closely with city officials and developers to create sustainable projects. One that I am most proud of is Lancaster Urban Village, a mixed use project that will create housing, retails shops, office space, and recreational facilities for the residents who live where the Veterans Administration Hospital is located. My office helped to secure federal funding for the project. We worked closely with city officials and developers, and once the development is completed it will be a vital part of Southern Dallas. So, to suggest that we have done nothing is patently false. In fact, one of the reporters from your newspaper wrote about the groundbreaking. The headline of the article read “Lancaster Urban Village offers promise for Oak Cliff corridor.” I do not mind fair and equitable evaluation of my work. But I take offense at slanted and biased coverage that distorts reality. It is something that I will not tolerate without comment. PAGE 5

GEORGE CURRY - On Little Wayne and Emmett Till The murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till in 1955 was a watershed moment, marking the beginning of the modern Civil Rights Movement. While visiting relatives near Money, Miss., the Chicago native was murdered for allegedly whistling at a White woman. The brutal act was intended to send an unmistakable message to Black boys everywhere: If you even whistle at a White woman in the Deep South, you could pay for it with your life. Like everyone else, I was appalled to learn that rapper Lil Wayne had made a vulgar reference to Till’s death. On a re-mix of an upcoming CD by Future called “Karate Chop,” Lil Wayne essentially spewed the line: “Beat that [female sex organ] up like Emmett Till.” When I sat down to write this column, I planned to excoriate Little Wayne about his insult. I started to remind him that musical artists don’t have to be ignorant fools, even while showing their underwear on stage. I was going to say that Curtis Mayfield of my era and Chuck D of his generation demonstrated that African-American artists can make good music and provide uplifting race-conscious lyrics at the same time. Rather than spend another nanosecond on Lil Wayne, we should use this Black History Month moment to educate young people who may not have ever heard of Emmett Till. While serving as editor of Emerge magazine, I had the pleasure of interviewing Mrs. Mamie Till Mobley, Emmett’s mother. For the 40th anniversary of his death in 1995, I wrote a story on Emmett Till. This is how it began: Mamie Till Bradley was about to experience a mother’s worst nightmare. She had to identify the corpse of her only child, 14-year-old Emmett Till, who had been abducted, beaten, shot in the head and tossed into the Tallahatchie River near Greenwood, Miss., for allegedly whistling at a White woman. As she approached the cold, metal slab that held the mutilated body at A. A. Rayner & Sons funeral

home in Chicago, the grieving mother thought to herself: “I got a job to do and it’s not going to be easy.” Mamie Till wanted to look directly into her son’s face, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Not yet. So she started with the lower extremities and worked her way up. “Those are his feet,” she concluded. The ankles? Yes, those were her son’s skinny ankles. Next, she surveyed the knees. Most people have sharp, pointed kneecaps. But the mother and son had flat ones. “Those are the Till knees,” she told herself. Her eyes continued up her son’s body and stopped on his genitals. Later, she would be happy that her inspection included that section of her son’s body because some people later would say, incorrectly, that Emmett had been castrated. Now, she would know otherwise. Mrs. Mamie Till Bradley Mobley — who will be called Mrs. Till hereafter to make it easier to follow the cast of characters in this drama — examined Emmett’s hands and arms,

socket. She looked at the left one and it was detached, dangling from the socket. “That’s his hazel eye,” Mrs. Till said. “Where is the other one?” She searched for one ear and it, too, was missing. Peering through the ear hole, she could see daylight on the other side. The remaining ear protruded from her son’s head, just like hers— another family trait. “That’s Emmett’s ear,” she said, softly. His hair? Yes. After inspecting the outstretched body inch by inch, Mrs. Till came to the sad but inescapable conclusion that the remains of what remained before her were those of Emmett Louis Till. Still, she turned to Gene Mobley, later to become her third husband, hoping he might have noticed something that she had not, anything that would cast the slightest doubt about whether this was indeed Bo. But Mobley had identified young Till in his mind long before the child’s mother had finished her methodical examination. The barber had recognized the haircut he had given Emmett two weeks earlier, just before Bo left for Mississippi. Mrs. Till had one thought over and over: What kind of person could do this to another human being, especially a 14–year–old boy?

which provided more confirmation of what she did not want confirmed. Finally, she took a deep breath and looked at her son’s decomposed face. This, too, she did piece by piece, separating his face into imaginary compartments, starting with his chin and moving to the top of his head. “Bo,” as he was known, had flashed a perfect set of teeth during his short life. Now, in death, only one or two were visible. “Oh, my God,” his mother thought. “Where are the rest of them?” The bridge of his nose, though all chopped up, was recognizable. She looked for his right eye — it was missing. There was only an empty

Her second thought was that this was a sight so ghastly, so inhumane that people would have to see it for themselves to believe it. “Gene, I want you to go home and get some of Bo’s pictures,” she said. “We’ll spread the pictures around.” The undertaker politely asked, “Do you want me to fix him up?” Mrs. Till did not hesitate: “No, you can’t fix that. Let the world see what I saw.” Obviously, Lil Wayne never saw that story. If he had, he would have realized this isn’t something to be taken lightly.

Ask Gwen My Fiancée Wants to Take a Break – Again! Dear Gwendolyn: I have been engaged for four years. Every time we set the wedding date, my fiancée cancels it at the eleventh hour. This time I have spent a lot of money – hiring the wedding consultant and paying deposit on the convention hall where the reception is to take place. All the invitations are printed and ready to be mailed. They even have stamps on them. This is the problem: My fiancée was in love with a man before me. In the four years of our dating, she has taken a break three times. She says that she needs the break from our relationship to be sure she is over with her ex. She told me that she feels that sometimes she is still in love with him. Gwendolyn, I am tired of our relationship being on again - off again. Should I lose money that has already been spent on the wedding and let her take a break? Robert Dear Robert: Yes, write off the money already spent and try to rebuild your budget. Being in a relationship of four years, she should by

now know how she feels about you. Her uncertainty is not good. Let me tell you this: True love never goes away and it seems that maybe (just maybe) this is causing all the problem. I was once talking to a married lady about my love life when she started talking about hers. In less than one minute I realized she was telling me about a man that was not her husband. It is hard for man or woman to forget first love – or if not first love, a deep rooted love for someone prior to the current individual they are involved with. However, it is unfair to you to keep planning a wedding and then canceling a wedding. This is not only costly, but eventually will have you in poor credit status. You know what…when a woman cannot forget a lost love, she does not make a good wife. The old theory that after two people marry, eventually they will fall in love. This has been proven to be some type of crazy. Too often that “eventually” never comes and two lives are wasted and two people find themselves old.. This is where a woman’s infidelity comes in. You would only be the bill payer. The debts you recently incurred should be paid. But in my answer to your question, “Should I ….let her take a break?” My advice is yes, but this time --- let it be permanent.

Improving Circulation With Aromatherapy The circulatory system is responsible for transporting fluid (in the form of blood and lymph) to all parts of the body. There are many factors that can keep this very important aspect of the human machine from functioning at top performance.

***Got a problem? Don’t solve it alone. Write to Gwendolyn Baines at: P. O. Box 10066, Raleigh, NC 27605-0066 or email her at: gwenbaines@hotmail.com --www.gwenbaines.com

Heart disease can have a devastating effect on the circulatory system, as the heart is the pump responsible for moving the fluid through the body. A compromised vascular system (e.g. clogged arteries, blood clots, thin veins/blood vessels) can also keep the circulatory system from operating at peak performance. It is extremely important to get help from your medical practitioner to make an accurate assessment of your body and bodily functions. Know how well (or poorly) your heart is working and get the medical statistics that indicate how all other organs are functioning.

Symptoms of poor circulation can be cold feet and hands, cramping, or numbness. Taking a natural approach to supporting your circulatory system is a responsible decision that everyone should make. Aromatherapy is one of the best natural approaches that can be used. The positive effects of essential oils on blood circulation, and vascular health is widely known. Massaging the body with essential oil blends can have an immediate and lasting effect on improving circulation. The essential oils that are best known for affecting blood pressure are Marjoram and Hyssop. They are stabilizing, and positively affect both elevated and low blood pressure conditions. Juniper, Grapefruit, and Geranium are well known for their toning properties, and can be used to improve vascular tone. Nutmeg and Sandalwood are essential oils that improve circulation of the fluids surrounding the nerve connections. Consult a certified aromatherapist for the right kind of essential oil blend for you and your specific circulation needs. Aromatherapy can be used to enhance almost every facet of your everyday living. It is simple, economical, and effective. Parks stamp and statue unveiled While she was being honored with the unveiling of the Rosa Parks stamp in Dallas, the civil rights icon Rosa Parks was also honored by having a statue dedicated in her honor within Statuary Hall inside of the United States Capitol. Following his participation in the ceremony in DC, Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) issued the following statement: “Rosa Parks was a champion of civil rights, an advocate for peace, and a dear friend,” said Rep. Conyers.“While quiet in demeanor, through her steadfast devotion to universal human rights, Mrs. Parks was a powerful voice for racial equality and societal reform through non-violence. She embodied the love of both humanity and freedom, from her decades-long work advancing civil rights, to her time spent in my office serving the Detroit community. “I find it ironic that on the day we are honoring Mrs. Parks, the Supreme Court is

hearing a case challenging the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act from a county in Alabama. Under these circumstances, we are powerfully reminded that the statue dedicated today stands not only for the dedication and life-work of Mrs. Parks. The statue also reminds us of the unfinished work we have in achieving full equality under the law and in guaranteeing the right to vote of every American everywhere within the country.” Meanwhile, at Dallas’ Lincoln Humnaities and Communications Magnet, students, elected officials and community activists listened as Principal Leslie Swann praised Mrs. Parks and stressed the importance of her work and the mark she left on the world. . “We feel honored to have hosted the unveiling here at Lincoln,” said Ms. Swann. Among the dignitaties in attendance were Dallas School Board Trustees Bernadette Nutall

and Carla Ranger, and Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price. The stamp honoring Mrs. Parks is being issued as a Forever Stamp, which are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce price. Art director Derry Noyes and stamp artist Thomas Blackshear II, who created his portrait in gouache on illustration board, emphazize Mrs. Parks’ quite determination and her pleasant persona in the stamp art. The program at Lincoln included performances by the legendary Maurine F. Bailey Choir, reflections by Mrs. Artie Nelson and a dramatic presentation by Ms. Pearl Epps. Mr. Bobby Collins, Officer-in-Charge, U.S. Postal Service - Dallas, officiated and provided remarks.

In our library Infidelity: dangerous to a marriage? Only if you do not understand what it is in the first place.

(Above: Unorthodox matchmaker Hellen Chen helps couples to marry and stay married despite problematic issues like infidelity)

Suzette is a mother of two and has been married for several years with her husband. She started to feel her husband no longer cared for her and marriage has become a routine day-to-day chore with no love involved. During a work opportunity, she met Peter and started an affair with him. As the gap between her and her husband widen, she asked for divorce. And Suzette married Peter. A few years later, Suzette filed for divorce again - this time with Peter - and wanted to get back to her first husband again but the road was irreversible. Though recognizing the mistakes which she has made, she is alone now and struggling to find the next possible relationship to start fresh. Suzette's story is one in a million of married men or women who engaged in infidelity and thus gone onto a path of no return.

According to the website InfidelityFacts.com, the percentage of marriages where one or both spouses admit to infidelity, whether physical or emotional is 41% There are even websites created only for married men and women to find dates outside their marriages ( it is called married dating). It is not an "uncommon practice" according these websites. One married dating website has this introduction: " It's not uncommon for things to get a little boring in the bedroom at some point during a marriage -- even in a loving marriage. Sometimes a couple's sex life just needs a boost to reignite the spark and recapture that feeling of sexual excitement..." These websites encouraged extramarital affairs being a way to 'satisfy and enrich' one's life. With technology and the easy access to conversations with anybody around the world through social media, the chance for infidelity is no longer reserved to work environment or traveling or socializing. If infidelity is such a common occurrence in marriages, how does one cope with infidelity - whether it happened to a spouse or oneself ? Hellen Chen is a bestselling author, marriage expert and an matchmaker, who has helped more than 100 men and women to find their perfect matches and stay married. Unlike traditional matchmaker, this unorthodox matchmaker deals frequently with men and women who have had their hearts broken and who have huge skepticism about marriage itself.

"Infidelity is a problem. It is never a 'one-time' damage. Even if not discovered, it definitely causes havoc for current and future relationships." said Chen, in an interview from Los Angeles, CA. Recently, during a vacation in Helsinki, Finland, Chen was asked by a local press Helsinki Times reporter, "How could you help the men and women in Helsinki to have a better relationship? Finland has one of the highest divorce rates in Europe." Chen's answer is "The problem is not about the country. The problem is worldwide. Men and women are educated in all types of studies but badly equipped to know what is marriage. We hear many theories about human behavior. But with all the information given about how men and women act, in the end, we still do not quite know how to deal with issues like stagnating relationships or infidelity." said Chen. According to Chen, infidelity in itself is not the root of the problem. The problem lies in not knowing what is infidelity, and not knowing what to do if that happens to oneself or a spouse and how to deal with it afterwards. According to a UN survey last year, America rank #5 in the world in divorce rate.

MARCH 1, 2013

Chen, who has helped women or men who have cheated to get back on track with their lives, has been invited on FOX, CBS and ABC TV interviews to give her expert views on relationships in America. One common question asked was, "Does the high divorce rate in America means that Americans are not taking their marriage vows seriously?" "Not at all. Most married couples do take their marriage vows seriously." said Chen. "But the problem lies in not preparing oneself for what might happen in a marriage. For example, not understanding what is infidelity whether it is emotional or physical, is a big issue." Chen's latest book "the Matchmaker of the Century" has become the number one bestselling relationship book on Barnes and Noble as the book shared real stories of couples who overcame challenges in their relationships with the help of the matchmaker. The ardent matchmaking has held workshops from Asia to America to help singles and couples understand how to cope with the various issues of marriage - from finding a perfect match to dealing with infidelity issues. Her next workshop will be held in Los Angeles, CA.

Movie Review: Quartet

Written by veteran screenwriter Ronald Harwood (THE PIANIST) and directed by two-time Oscar winner, Dustin Hoffman, QUARTET is centered around Beecham House — a retirement home for

Silver-haired friends, Wilford “Wilf ” Bond (Billy Connolly) and Cecily “Cissy” Robson (Pauline Collins) are pleasantly surprised to learn that their new housemate is none other than world-

professional musicians located in the heart of the English countryside. As the residents prepare for the annual fall concert, rumors begin to swirl about a new resident coming to the house and the word on the street is, it’s someone famous.

renowned opera vocalist and their former singing partner, Jean Horton (Maggie Smith). Almost everyone at Beecham House is ecstatic about Jean’s arrival. She is even greeted by an awe-inspired round of applause from the residents and staff when she enters the

building. However, one person is not happy to learn the identity of the new resident. In fact, Jean’s ex-husband, Reginald Paget (Tom Courtenay), is furious because no one informed him in advance that she, of all people, was moving in. His bold display of disdain for Jean makes it obvious that he is actually still harboring deep pain over their past. Initially Jean tries to be friendly with Reginald, but her efforts are in vain. That is, until he slowly comes around and they actually have a chance to have a civil conversation about what went wrong in their marriage. It becomes apparent that these two still love each other. Once Reginald softens up and is cordial to his ex, Wilf and Cissy convince Reginald that they should perform “Rigoletto” at the concert. “Rigoletto” was composed by fellow housemate Verdi, whose birthday they celebrate every year at the concert. There’s a wee bit of a problem though. “Rigoletto” is a piece that was performed by the quartet — Wilf, Cissy, Reginald and Jean — many moons ago. Not only have the foursome not sung together in decades, but they have a much bigger obstacle to overcome. Jean does not want to sing. !

Forced to humble herself from her long-gone glory days as an international star and the substantial financial losses she suffered in the latter days of her career, Ms. Horton reluctantly moves to the retirement home and makes up her mind that she is done with singing. After much coddling by her three friends and some strategic coaxing, i.e. the funds raised at the concert will help save Beecham House, your rival opera diva Anne Langley (played by Dame Gwyneth Jones) is performing, blah, blah, blah, Jean eventually comes around and the Rigoletto reunion inevitably saves the day. QUARTET is a delightful, warm and fuzzy film about aging, love, friendship and a passion for music. Hoffman does an amazing job of telling this story and it was cast brilliantly. At an hour and 35 minutes, the length is just right and it is rated PG-13 for brief strong language and suggestive humor. Perfect for an afternoon matinee, but don’t leave before the closing credits. The tribute to the real-world musicians portrayed in the film is fascinating and educational. Three and a half reels

Urban League’s Annual Meeting Luncheon focuses on future Change, challenge and determination were the messages from Dr. Beverly Mitchell-Brooks’ Annual Report to the Community at this year’s Urban League Annual Meeting Luncheon. “Each year, we report to our funders, the community and friends on how your dollars have enabled our clients to move toward selfreliance,” said Dr. Brooks. “In one program the Urban League provided rent, mortgage assistance, temporary housing, food vouchers, utility payments

and gasoline to nearly 9,000 clients. This included 92 veterans, 648 who were disabled, 111 who received emergency food support and 85 disaster relief clients from the Lancaster tornado.” In closing her report, Dr. Brooks reminded the audience that accountability is required and the League’s annual report outlines not only the outcomes of all the Urban League programs, but the impact their

investments have in the community. “We are the third leg of a three legged stool that is the support system for those who need a helping hand.” Two Urban League clients, Eric Gary and Castanita Fitzpatrick told the audience about their journey and how the Urban League helped them. The highlight of the event was the presentation of the Legacy awards to Dr. Charles Mitchell, retired Orthopedic Surgeon and John Beckwith Sr., founder

of Golden Gate Funeral Home. The honorees then presented the Torch Award to Dr. Winifred Parnell and Mr. John Beckwith Jr. and challenged them to continue to excel in their profession. Candice Quarles, President of the Urban League Young Professionals, new member of the Urban League Board of Trustees and B. J. Williams, Garland City Councilman, District 4, new member of the CSBG Managing Board of Directors were sworn in.

My name is Castanita Fitzpatrick and this is my story. I lived with my grandmother until I was 11 years old. I desperately wanted to find my mother so I hitch hiked from Chicago to Cleveland and found my mother but she denied me to the police and I was placed in juvenile detention center. I was remanded to my mother’s custody when released from the juvenile detention center. Shortly after that, my mother told me that I could not live with her and I became homeless. For 31 years I lived on the streets and was involved in drugs and prostitution. I eventually made my way to Dallas and when I hit rock bottom I went into a Rehabilitation Program at Phoenix House. I met Androu Hatchett and Shirley Mathis with the Urban League’s SISTA Program which is an Evidence Based Intervention that targets minority women to reduce their risk of contracting HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Schirin Dodd, an Urban League Risk Reduction Specialist and enrolled in their programs. I graduated from Phoenix House May 2011 and Urban League programs at the end of the cycles. By the summer of 2011, I was able to reunite with my family by mail and met them face-to-face in October of that year. My mother is now drug free and a supportive part of my life. I am now working and became engaged in December 2012. I cannot thank the Urban League enough for arming me with the tools I needed to get my life back on track. I am now a productive member of society. Eric Gary – Veterans Success Story

My name is Eric Gary and I am originally from Sarasota, Florida. I had a pretty normal life with my mom and dad, three sisters and two brothers. I graduated from a technical college with an Associate Degree in Science and Electronics. I needed money to continue my education so I decided to join the U.S. Navy. While I was stationed in the Naval Air Station Grand Prairie, TX facility I got married and had two children. Shortly after I received an honorable discharge from the Navy, I got divorced. I started drinking and doing drugs. At that point my life just spiraled out of control. I spent six months in rehabilitation at Phoenix House and after my release I needed housing. I was referred to the Urban League by a former Veteran and Urban League staffer, the late Charles McCuin. Because I was a veteran, I was able to enter the League’s Efficiency Apartment Supportive Housing (EASH) Program for chronically homeless veterans. I not only secured housing but case management services. My case manager, Derrick Evans, said he was impressed with my work ethic and he recommended me for employment at the Urban League. I am now a Peer Mentor for Urban League’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program, which provides supportive services to very low-income veteran families residing in or transitioning to permanent housing. In my spare time I mentor veterans who suffer from Drug/Alcohol addiction and facilitate meetings with addicts at drug rehab centers and homeless shelters. I am so thankful Urban League and staff…they were there when I really need them. They were the lifeline that helped me find housing and employment and get my life back. I don’t use your tax dollars for entitlements any more. I am a productive citizen. !

Not Just Vanilla From fashioner to painter, DJ Naehritz has been an artist most of her life. Although a native Texan, she spent many of her formative years on the west coast. Having lived in a liberating atmosphere influences her work today. Her bold, impasto abstractions are highly atypical and pull the viewer into the work to consider the interplay of form and texture. Her use of color and the way her palate intermingles is at times warming and sensual, other times bold and engaging. Her compelling compositions are rich with complex texture and depth.
