Support Annya for Miss Jabberwock Let me tell you about Annya Smith! Many of you know her from hearing her voice on KKDA-AM, seeing her out at functions over the years or if I happened to write or speak about something she did to make me shake my head! She was only 2 1/2 years old when the song “Flashlight” came on the car radio and she held up her hand to stop everyone from talking and said, “Hey, I think that’s my song!” Weeks later I stood looking at her as she sat drenched from head to toe in baby oil. I recall the late Mrs. Coleman calling in to KKDA and saying something about Annya and sitting in the studio, three-year-old Annya yells, “Who Me?” Prior to her death Mrs. Coleman would become so tickled every time she mentioned that Cheryl Smith episode. It seemed like every year around the same time we would have the National Association of Black Journalists Regional Conference and journalist George Curry would find himself digging deep to come up with birthday cash for Annya. Or there were the times she would manage to get the brothers from Muhammad’s Mosque to give her the money that she would in turn pass back to YOU AND A GUEST ARE INVITED TO A them for a slice of bean pie. SPECIAL ADVANCE SCREENING OF Her brother and sister got yelled at on more than one occasion because I just knew that Annya was too short to reach the items that were always missing from the kitchen pantry or the top shelf of the refrigerator. It appears I was wrong! And you should have seen the look on my face the evening I left a pan of brownies cooling to take to my class the next day only to come back into the kitchen and see where a spatula had been used to scoop out almost half the pan! It was Annya at work. There are so many stories to tell about Annya’s shenanigans over the years. Some people call her my twin. I tease her about her thick eyebrows that look just like Mr. Big, or Ron Isley for you old schoolers! TUESDAY, MARCH 12 - 7:00PM Well, guess what? On March 12, 2013, Annya turns 18! AMC NORTHPARK 8687 NORTH CENTRAL EXPRESSWAY, DALLAS, TX 75225 I’m still trying to wrap my brain around the thought, along with the idea that Please RSVP to MindlessBehaviorDallas@gmail.com soon she will be donning a gown in the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s annual Jabberwock Pageant. Could this be the young lady who after an NABJ trip was out in front of the house with Royle King Jr., and a number of other male students, playing football? As long as I can remember Annya has been telling folks that she wants to go to Florida A&M University. By participating in the Jabberwock Pageant, she has an opportunity to win a scholarship to assist with tuition, and other college costs. Come out at 6p.m. on March 12 and meet Annya and say Happy Birthday to OPENS IN THEATERS MARCH 15 her, make a donation or buy an ad in support of her quest to become Miss Jabberwock at 6p.m. and stay for the movie, “Mindless Behavior All Around the World,” featuring the group, Mindless Behavior. We’ll be at the AMC Northpark, 8687 North Central Expressway. Now you FRIDAY, MARCH 1 must RSVP to MindlessBehaviorDallas@gmail.com for you and a guest, in order to ensure that you can get in to the movie at 3.125x6 LH 7p.m. Annya is a senior at Duncanville High School and she can be shy at times and a bit of a tomboy, BUT, I saw her get excited about the prospect of participating in the pageant. The excitement is contagious. Join the A Team by donating whatever dollar amount you choose, or you can purchase: Full page ad $200 1/2 page $150 1/4 page $100 Business Card $50 Tickets for the pageant must be purchased prior to the event. Subscriptions are $35 if purchased before April 6 or $45 between April 7 and April 23. The Dinner and Pageant will be on Sunday April 28, at 6p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel, 8250 North Central Expressway in Dallas. Thanks for your consideration! Please know that any donation will be greatly appreciated and you will be listed on Annya’s pages, no matter how small or large your donation. Cashiers Checks should be made payable to "Dodd Education and Support" with all funds due before the end of the month. If you are purchasing an ad, please submit camera-ready ads in the form of PDFs or JPEGs to me as soon as possible at cheryl@cherylsmithonline.com, log on to www.annyasmith.com or bring it on March 12. A HIGHWAY TO FREEDOM THE QUEST FOR PEACE As we stand here today, At the crossroads of freedom and equality, The celebration of the emancipation proclamation must not become a novelty. That great march was the start, To engage a nations heart, To pull back the veil of discrimination and oppression And to cease and release the rights of a people, And honor our Declarations intended predilections. And though we have lived to behold A man of color residing in our countries most prestigious house, There is still so much work to do, We must remain vigilant and persistent, Of this there can be no doubt. His coming was the hailing of an inspired notion, That we can be what we choose when motivated by devotion. He exemplifies that we are not separate and often more than equal, His second term in office is a historic sequel. We must strive to bring liberation through education. We must teach our sons and daughters To look beyond their situations. Let us inspire them to nurture and caress their dreams, For then shall we all be able to lift our voices and sing. Like Martin we must live our dreams, Like Malcolm we must do what is necessary, Like Medgar we need to have the courage To not let our voices be buried. Let us unite and work to bring calm To the chaos in our streets, For then and only then Shall we know the majesty Of that elusive jewel known as peace.

Women's History Month: Psychologist Dr. Trevicia Williams talks basics while women strut for a cause With Texas being #5 in the nation for teen births and Dallas #1 for repeat teen pregnancies, psychologist, Dr. Trevicia Williams, is maximizing success at the Diamonds & Pearls A Celebration of Women's event by empowering professional and entrepreneurial women while inspiring and educating mothers and teen girls on Saturday, March 9, 2013 in Frisco, TX. Frisco and Plano I.S.D. mothers and their teen daughters will kick off spring break 2013 in a fun and educational way this year as psychologist Dr. Trevicia Williams empowers them to have healthier relationships through effective communication. Having Dr. Trevicia Williams, a local psychologist, as a feature in an article about the event and free workshops or guest on your program to talk about mother daughter relationship dynamics and the need for effective communication skills to cultivate healthy mother daughter relationships as a measure of preventing teen pregnancies would be beneficial to local mothers who deal with the challenges associated with parenting everyday. The free workshops that Dr. Williams is facilitating helps mothers and teen daughters develop trust and respect. They also empower and equip mothers and teen daughters during the oftentimes turbulent teen years. "The racing hormones and emotional changes that shape our daughters' adolescence can feel like a roller coaster ride. Sometimes the 'terrible teens' can dim the glow of the most confident moms," says psychologist and author of Pearls in the Pain of Every Experience: Girl Still, Woman Not Quite Dr. Trevicia Williams. Dr. Williams offers her hard earned wisdom for bridging the mother-daughter divide during girls' teen years. A healthy mother daughter relationship also helps to prevent teen pregnancy. According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancies, "Teens say parents most influence their decisions about sex and 87% say it would be much easier for them to postpone sex and avoid teen pregnancy if they were able to have more open, honest conversations about these topics with their parents." On a local level, Dr. Williams is working with Frisco and Plano, I.S.D. as well as other local organizations as part of her mission to create school and community partnerships that positively impact student achievement, prevent teen pregnancies and increase parent involvement. Saturday March 9 and Saturday May 11, 2013, Dr. Williams will facilitate a free substantive healthy relationships workshop from 3 p- 5 p at Conference Centers at Collin County Community Colleges for mothers and teen daughters to connect, build, bond and grow.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

Closure of Dawson State Jail

TEACHING AND LEARNING: A LIFELONG PATH TO JUSTICE

By Royce West

Soon, a very important step will take place as it relates to how criminal justice will be administered in the State of Texas. Monday, the Senate Finance Committee followed the recommendations of a Sen. Royce West (TX-23) criminal justice workgroup that proposed the non-renewal of the contract with the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) that currently has an agreement with the state for the operation of the Dawson State Jail facility. If approved by the Senate, then the full Legislature, the contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of August, consistent with the state's fiscal year. At its outset, Dawson State Jail, as part of the state jail program created by the Legislature in 1993, was on the vanguard of a criminal justice reform that was designed to divert non-violent offenders from what we know as the state prison system. We were at the end of a period of rapid prison population growth when Texas thought that with tough sentencing, we could incarcerate our way out of a crime problem. Seeing the rising incarceration headcount, private corporations jumped into the prison business. In the 20 years since, times have changed and the state jail program has experienced hard times, some caused by several rounds of budget cuts, the most crippling which took place in 2003. When that happened, substance abuse and other rehabilitative programs that were designed to return shortterm offenders to the community equipped with the tools necessary for success, were stripped from the state jail formula. What we were left with was a place where offenders would serve out sentences that averaged nine months to a year before being released - more than often not - only to be arrested again at rates that are higher than for those who return from state prison. At the same time, since 2005, other programs introduced and funded through local probation departments have proven successful in keeping offenders out of prison. Now with lower prison populations, the need for privately-run jail space has been diminished. PAGE 5

MARCH 8, 2013

By Susan Asiyanbi Executive Vice President, Teacher Preparation, Support and Development

(BlackNews.com) -- From the lunch counters in Birmingham to the March on Washington, reflecting on the 50th anniversaries of the Civil Rights Movement this year has made Black History Month especially poignant. As a little girl on the south side of Chicago, I grew up with parents who did not have many material things, but built a home rooted in love and a deep belief in my ability to achieve anything with a great education. I had the rare chance to attend schools that many of my peers could not access and, from a young age, I understood the disparity in the quality of education from school to school and neighborhood to neighborhood. Today, as Teach For Americas executive vice president for teacher preparation, support, and development, I’m grateful for my home and my background, and draw from my experiences each day to inform my approach to how we develop teachers. I recently had the opportunity to collaborate and connect with hundreds of

committed educators, instructional coaches, and experts to share my reflections on the social justice implications of work in education, and the importance of self-knowledge and community partnership as pathways to providing the quality of education that will open our students hearts and minds to their own potential and to future life opportunities. From 36 states, we gathered in Memphis to discuss teaching as an act of leadership in the context of the city’s historical contribution to the fight for civil rights. Grounded in the history and spirit of that city, I challenged the group to embrace our collective responsibility to demonstrate the strength and assets of our students so they are supported and empowered to believe in their potential and chart a path to achieve their aspirations. I am more convinced than ever that teachers who create personal transformational experiences for their students are leaders who reflect on their identity and the implications of it, given the narrative in our country around race, class, and privilege. They understand cultural context and its integration with pedagogy and help their students to see the great pride and beauty in their own heritage. Classroom leadership, boldness, and clarity of vision are central to what it will take to empower our students to reach their deep potential. I am also convinced that our teachers and students cannot walk this journey alone. We need only look to exemplars of

change to understand how change happens. During the Civil Rights Movement, a social, political, and economic shift in this country occurred because of visionary leadership and unprecedented cooperation. Our teachers and kids need leadership and cooperation from all of us -- the parents, volunteers, advocates, allies, and concerned citizens of their communities. Giving of ourselves is part of what will be required to reach that day when opportunity in our communities is equitably and consistently available. Being a part of the solution is not an easy task and does not come without some challenges along the way. So many people before us have sacrificed their lives so we can continue to forge the road ahead; and we too will have our own set of sacrifices to pave the road for those who follow us. When I find myself looking for inspiration and the courage to sacrifice, I look to Dr. King. His words are a compass on the way to equity and justice: "Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable...Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals." I urge each and every one of us to think about the role we can and must play on the path to justice - our children’s futures hang in the balance. Susan Asiyanbi is the Executive Vice President, Teacher Preparation, Support and Development at Teach For America.

Miles Pitmon can now be considered a big brain on campus at Paul Quinn College. The sophomore Liberal Arts major coached the Lancaster High School Engineering Club to victory at the Lego Explosion & BeyBlade Challenge VI at the University of Texas-Dallas on Feb. 23. The event was hosted by UTD’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. “I was very happy because the kids didn’t have a lot of time to finish their project. To see that they did the best they could with the amount of time they had is very exciting,” said Pitmon, who volunteers with the Lancaster ISD STEM Project and also serves as an AVID tutor along with other Paul Quinn students.

“The Quinnite Nation is incredibly proud of the accomplishments of the Lancaster High School Engineering Club,” said Michael J. Sorrell, president of Paul Quinn. “We are equally proud of the contributions of our student, and their coach, Miles Pitmon. This is a great moment for our Tiger to Tiger Initiative and yet another example of our progress in becoming one of America's great small colleges.” The competition called for students to compete in either the LegoBuild Competition or the BeyBlade Challenge. Lancaster’s team opted for the Lego competition which consisted of a free-build event where winners were judged on creativity, style, and presentation. Lancaster’s winning project was a 3-D board game.

Ask Gwen We promised our daughter a new car, canʼt change our mind! Dear Gwendolyn: Two years ago, our son graduated from high school and we purchased for him a new car. We also promised our daughter when she graduates from high school, she will also receive a new car. My son received a football scholarship and lives on campus out of the city. Our daughter does not plan to attend college. Instead of furthering her education at this time, she plans to take a job at a fast food place. She plans to stay at home for at least the next 8 to 10 years. This is the problem: Six months ago my husband lost his job. The company moved to another city. Some employees went to the new location, but my husband was not chosen to go.

Gwendolyn, we are barely making mortgage payments and our SUV is broken. My husband cannot understand why I am insisting that we go ahead and purchase a new car for my daughter. She graduates in two months. I don’t want my children to ever have to experience disappointment. Liz Dear Liz How can you think of purchasing a new car for your daughter – at the same time barely making mortgage payments? Gee, some men know they chose the wrong woman. Let me tell you this: Not wanting your children to experience disappointment is not the real world. Mothers, as yourself, leave this world with children unable to manage a dime. It is imprudent for you to think you can shield your children from the troubles of this world. It makes no sense Liz (Read Overcoming Life’s Disappointments by Harold S. Kushner, 2007). If you insist on buying the new car, then go ahead and do so. But keep in mind — the three of you may have to — sleep in it.

A few drops in a spray bottle of water work well misted around the house – particularly on the screens of open windows – to discourage flies. It is also an effective repellant for silverfish and cockroaches. Eucalyptus is one of the most popular of essential oils largely because of its vast range of usage. It should be a part of every basic aromatherapy kit. With proper storage (i.e. away from light and heat), it has a long shelf life - up to 2 years.

Long used as a remedy for cold and flu symptoms, eucalyptus is soothing to sore throats, boosts the immune system, and reduces the spread of many forms of bacteria. It works especially well on the respiratory system when addressing congestion.

The majesty of the plant world extends further than the eye can see. Eucalyptus is literally a breath of fresh air.

Under the direction of a certified aromatherapist, eucalyptus may be combined with other essential oils to create an effective synergistic blend to approach physical issues, as well as freshen the home.

The essential oil of eucalyptus is surprisingly economical. A small bottle can last a long time even with heavy usage. !

CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST REV. PETER JOHNSON SKIPS RECEIVING AWARD AT LUNCHEON WHERE GOVERNOR JEB BUSH WAS FEATURED SPEAKER - Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush became the center of protest today during the 13th Annual Destiny Awards benefiting the St. Philip's School and Community Center held this afternoon on the St. Philip's campus in the Snyder Activity Center. Governor Bush was the keynote guest speaker for the luncheon that included an honor presented to civil rights activist, Reverend Peter Johnson, as the 2013 Unsung Hero Award. Reverend Johnson made a decision not to attend the luncheon today in protest of Governor Bush's support of the Stand Your Ground Law, which has been the focus of protest in the Trayvon Martin Case across the country. In 2005, Governor Bush signed the controversial Stand Your Ground Bill into Law in Florida.

This week marks the one-year anniversary of the Trayvon Martin shooting death in Sanford, Florida. Civil rights activists and advocates such as Reverend Johnson have held vigils across the country protesting national gun laws and racial profiling. Reverend Johnson issued the following statement regarding his absence at the Destiny Awards with Governor Jeb Bush: "As a person that has fought hard for civil rights and against the injustice that afflict communities economically disadvantaged and often underserved by those in positions of power, I am honored that St. Philip’s School and Community Center has chosen to recognize my achievements by awarding me with the

"Unsung Hero Award" . However, I refuse to stand in a space with former Governor Jeb Bush whose policies are in stark contrast to the policies I hold near and dear and fought valiantly to achieve. The” Stand Your Ground” law has resulted in innocent lives being prematurely snuffed out, as seen in the Trayvon Martin case, in addition to promoting a spirit of “open season” on specific minority groups. This contradicts the true essence of the civil rights movement and the long suffering of those who paved the way. Furthermore, this law is also in direct conflict with the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi." Reverend Peter Johnson

In our library NOVELIST BRINGS HER OWN AUTHENTIC SLANT ON ROMANCE TO THE E-BOOK WORLD

Jennifer L. Ray

Author Jennifer L. Ray brings her own authentic slant on romance to the e-book world. Her novels are rich, soulful, southernbased, and deeply romantic. Family secrets are a recurring sub-theme to all her novels and titillate the reader's imagination making for a suspenseful read, as well as, a romantic one. She brings a healthy dose of humor to her novels as well and draws the reader in making one feel at-home between the pages of a Jennifer L. Ray novel. It takes a truly talented writer to offer romance, humor, and suspense, but Ray's talents do not end there. Her motto is that, "Trashy novels are for whores, but explicit romance doesn't have to be garbage." Her love scenes are eased into quite artfully and leave you as breathless and aroused as if you were actually experiencing the lovemaking. The sexual tension in her novels is like eating

half of a chocolate bar, decadent and satisfying, but definitely leaving you wanting so much more. One would never believe that one romance novel could offer all of this, but Ray happens to have been an avid romance reader all of her life. She has read the best and learned from the best. She knows what readers want from a romance novel and she delivers it. She has been married twenty years to the father of her two sons and she believes in romance and love. She literally takes all of her experiences in life; the love, the trials, and the hilarity and creates powerful novels for readers. Her fans say her writing is a gift to the black audience that is much needed. Readers from all over the world agree that artists like Jennifer L. Ray should be celebrated, supported, and commended for putting deep thought into what type of audience she wants and respecting them by writing novels that uplift, intrigue, teach, inspire, and entertain. Innocent until proven guilty? New book uncovers truth about racism, murder in the South LOS ANGELES – Love, prejudice, infidelity and murder combine in a real-life mystery thriller. A true story of passion and pain, author Lonikaye Harkless unveils the truth behind a murder and false execution in the South with her new book, Justice Served. When a high-class woman is murdered by her husband in a betrayal-fueled rage, her illegitimate 21-year-old son is executed for the crime he did not commit. After witnessing his lover killed by her husband, the boy’s father plans and carries out a scheme to kill him. Fulfilling a promise to her ailing mother, Harkless began researching to uncover the truth

of why Bobby was executed. Harkless’ mother believed he was her cousin. She set out on a mission to find out what happened thirty years before and slowly began to unravel the shocking true story of star-crossed lovers, infidelity and misunderstanding. “I hated the idea of my mother passing away without ever knowing the truth about Bobby’s execution,” says Harkless. “I made a promise to her on her deathbed that I would uncover the truth and tell the world.” With the twists, turns and betrayals of a modern day soap opera, Justice Served provides a dramatic love story while offering a poignant social commentary on life in that place and time. “Race absolutely played a part in the events in the book,” says Harkless. “Racial prejudice was a major factor in the assumption of Bobby’s guilt and ultimately, his execution.” Having finally discovered the truth surrounding the deaths of Doris, Bobby and Sam, Harkless’ mother was able to die knowing her cousin was an innocent man.

First Lady Michelle Obama kicks off MomsRising.org's "Food Power" Conference with video appeal to fight childhood obesity New York MomsRising.org answered First Lady Michelle Obama's call for parents to get involved in the fight against childhood obesity. The grassroots organization kicked off National Nutrition Month with a "Food Power" conference and film screening to promote healthy eating habits and urge participants to support the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) recently released guidelines on school meals. A video welcome from the First Lady motivated moms, dads, bloggers, and community activists gathered in Brooklyn, NY. "I'm so thrilled to have MomsRising.org and all of your grassroots muscle and passion working right by our side because as we've seen again and again through 'Let's Move,' people like you play a vitally important role in helping our kids eat healthier and get the physical activity they need," Obama said. "If you all are not leading the way in your community then who will?" African American children suffer disproportionately from obesity. A 2010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report revealed that African American women were 70% more likely to be obese than NonHispanic White women and African American girls were 80% more likely to be overweight than NonHispanic White girls. slavery and encourages healthier approaches to soul food preparation. The film features appearances from activist/comedian, Dick Gregory; poet, Sonia Sanchez; writer, Michaela Angela Davis; and commentator Marc Lamont Hill.

"We're very excited to be working on the same path that Mrs. Obama and Byron Hurt are to improve children's health," said MomsRising.org executive director, Kristin RoweFinkbeiner. "Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. and we all need to work together to reverse this dangerous and deadly trend."

In addition to the film screening, several parents shared personal stories about their battle to get their families to eat healthier meals. A panel of experts discussed practical ways to defeat the epidemic of childhood obesity. As MomsRising.org is focused on taking action, the breakout sessions provided attendees with a choice of three campaigns to sign-on to: How to get junk food out of school, how to stop junk food marketing to children, and breastfeeding, health care and preventing childhood obesity.

"Soul Food Junkies" (www.itvs.org/films/ soul-food-junkies) offers a sometimes humorous exploration of the Black community's affinity for foods like fried chicken, fatflavored collard greens, and fried pork chops, despite the fact that these foods increase risks for diabetes, high blood pressure, stokes, heart disease and obesity. Inspired by the premature death of his father, Hurt traces the origins of soul food back to

Speakers at the Brooklyn launch event included Karen Showalter, MomsRising.org; Dr. Aletha Maybank, NYC Dept. of Public Health; dream hampton, MomsRising.org; Migdalia Rivers, LatinaOnAMission.com; Tanya Fields, Brown Girl Swagger; Lorraine Gonzalez, Children's Defense Fund; Jessica Donze Black, Kids Safe and Healthful Foods; and Joy Spencer, Center for Digital Democracy, among others. MomsRising.org is challenging childhood obesity through improving school meals. The issue of nutrition and the role of schools foods in contributing to childhood obesity are gaining currency. The USDA recently opened up a 60-day comment period on its updated national nutrition standards for foods and beverages sold through vending machines and a la carte lines. The recent "Food Power" conference is just one of many planned events around the country as MomsRising.org gathers support and gains awareness for its cause. The next event a film screening and panel discussion - will take place in Detroit, MI at the Fellowship Chapel on Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00.The free event is open to the public. !

DST represents Texas with Centennial Events The Centennial Torch signifying 100 years of sisterhood, service and scholarship is leaving Dallas headed to Washington, D.C. in a 22-city torch tour. One of the founders, Frederica Chase Dodd, a Dallasite, founded the first chapter of African American sororities in Dallas. Tragically. Dallas was the site of a plane crash in 1985 that killed several people on their way to the national convention. The Centennial Torch weekend boasts nearly 2,000 members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. from Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and as far as California, as well a host of friends, dignitaries and other Greek-lettered guests who came to North Texas for the events. The Centennial celebration culminates in Washington, DC at the national convention in July.

Johnson applauds the Passage of Senate Version of Violence Against Women Act – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the fo#owing statement concerning the bipartisan, Senate-passed reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act:

“The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) has historically provided a vast network of support for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking since its initial passage in 1994. The Senate-passed version of the VAWA reauthorization is the result of extensive deliberation and consultation with real victims of violence, law enforcement personnel, and outside organizations that specialize in combating domestic violence and abuse. I was proud to support the Senate version, and pleased that PAGE 19

this Congress voted to pass S. 47. With this bill, we are standing with the women of this Nation, and sending a strong message that these acts will not be tolerated. Every victim of domestic violence in America deserves equal protection under the law, and passage of the Senate version is a victory for law enforcement, advocates, and victims of domestic violence.” The House GOP version of the Violence Against Women Act failed to pass by a vote of 166-257, and Congresswoman Johnson voted against this measure. The House then voted, with Congresswoman Johnson’s support, 286-138 to pass the Senate version, with 87 Republicans joining the Democrats. MORE ON HOUSE REAUTHORIZATION OF

THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT The NAACP applauds the United States House for passing an inclusive reauthorization to update and improve the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

From NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous: “Women across the country have come to depend on the services and protections offered by the Violence Against Women Act,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “At a time when so many extremist politicians are seeking to roll back decades of hard-won protections and rights, this renewal is an important victory.”

From NAACP Senior Vice President of Policy and Advocacy and director of !

NAACP’s Washington Bureau Hilary Shelton: “The reauthorization of the VAWA ensures a continuation of vital, lifesaving programs and protections,” stated Hilary Shelton, Senior Vice President for Policy and Advocacy and Director of NAACP’s Washington Bureau. “NAACP supported the passage of the VAWA in 1994, and its reauthorization in 2000 and 2005, and has seen the VAWA improve the landscape for victims in the United States who once suffered in silence. Victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking have now been able to access services, and a new generation of families and justice system professionals have come to understand that domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking are crimes that our society will no longer tolerate.” !

March 21st – April 14th Not Just Vanilla From fashioner to painter, DJ Naehritz has been an artist most of her life. Although a native Texan, she spent many of her formative years on the west coast. Having lived in a liberating atmosphere influences her work today. Her bold, impasto abstractions are highly atypical and pull the viewer into the work to consider the interplay of form and texture. Her use of color and the way her palate intermingles is at times warming and sensual, other times bold and engaging. Her compelling compositions are rich with complex texture and depth.
