Message to the People...
I MESSENGER March 22, 2013
This Saturday there are so many things going on. Iโd like to highlight two events: The Family Reunification Conference and Community Picnic, sponsored by two organizations - Miles of Freedom and Quest for Greater Success. Richard Miles is the executive director of Miles of Freedom and his name appeared in headlines when he was finally exonerated of a crime he spent years in prison for.
IMAJ 4
Cheryl Smith
Since his release, he has spent a significant amount of his time and resources supporting families of the incarcerated and those who have been released from prison. Assata Thomas of Quest for Greater Success knows what it means to carry a felony on your record and she is determined provide a support system and let the formerly incarcerated and their families know that someone cares about them. Koquice Spencer knows firsthand how it feels to have a family member imprisoned. Her mother, Joyce Ann Brown spent nine years, five months and 24 days in prison for a crime she didnโt commit.
U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson 5
โI was nine years old when my mother went to prison,โ said Ms. Spencer. โThe impact lasts a lifetime. I want to get everyone involved in assisting these families.โ The conferenceโs theme is โWe Careโ and organizer hope to provide โopportunities that embrace, educate, and empower families who have been impacted by having a loved one in jail or prison.โ Presenters for the March 23, 2013 event at First Fellowship Community Church, 910 E. Ledbetter Drive, 10:00am-4:00pm include: Rev. Gerald Britt of City Square, Joetta Black of Martin Luther King Center, Al Richard of Wayback House, JP Morgan Chase and Joyce Ann Brown. In addition to vendors, there will be a full fare picnic, childrenโs arts and crafts area, a teen corner, a book giveaway, and live music. This is an ideal opportunity to gain more insight into the issues that the formerly incarcerated and their families must deal with. Find out more about the conference or how you can help at www.thewecarenetwork.org

Then thereโs the Ten Thousand Man Rally Against Domestic Abuse at Dallas City Hall at 10:00am. Called by Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, the rally will call attention to domestic violence and encourage men to speak out against abusing women. โItโs time for the men of Dallas to say enough is enough,โ said Mayor Rawlings, during a press conference announcing the event. Joined by former Dallas Cowboys Emmitt Smith and Troy Aikman, WFAA-TVโs Dale Hansen, DISD Board Trustee Dr. Lew Blackburn and a multicultural group of men, the mayor denounced the jokes and behaviors that lead to the abuse of women.

As we stand here today, At the crossroads of freedom and equality, The celebration of the emancipation proclamation must not become a novelty. That great march was the start, To engage a nations heart, To pull back the veil of discrimination and oppression And to cease and release the rights of a people, And honor our Declarations intended predilections. And though we have lived to behold A man of color residing in our countries most prestigious house, There is still so much work to do, We must remain vigilant and persistent, Of this there can be no doubt. His coming was the hailing of an inspired notion, That we can be what we choose when motivated by devotion. He exemplifies that we are not separate and often more than equal, His second term in office is a historic sequel. We must strive to bring liberation through education. We must teach our sons and daughters To look beyond their situations. Let us inspire them to nurture and caress their dreams, For then shall we all be able to lift our voices and sing. Like Martin we must live our dreams, Like Malcolm we must do what is necessary, Like Medgar we need to have the courage To not let our voices be buried. Let us unite and work to bring calm To the chaos in our streets, For then and only then Shall we know the majesty Of that elusive jewel known as peace. ZEMILL Copyright 2013 All Rights Reserved. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...
Promoting standards of excellence By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
One of the most relevant communication organizations in our country is the National Newspaper Publishers Association, which represents the nationโs nearly two hundred African American
newspaper owners. Located in Washington, D.C. and managed by Mr. William Tompkins, the NNPA provides professionally written relevant news stories and editorials to its member papers. Some of its weekly columnists include George Curry, the former editor of Emerge Magazine, Marian Wright Edelman of the Childrenโs Defense Fund, Marc Morial, former New Orleans Mayor and CEO of the National Urban League and Lee Daniels, an award winning writer who worked with the New York Times and Washington Post Newspapers. This year the organization is celebrating its 73rd anniversary. I was honored by the group at a recent event held in Washington, D.C. as NNPA publishers presented me with the Torch Award for Political Achievement. This was a humbling experience since I find it an honor and a privilege to work tirelessly for the improvement of our communities and our country. Throughout the history of this country the Black Press has been a crucial crucible for the delivery of information to people of color when no other news organizations thought it necessary to cover events of relevance to minorities and progressive thinking people. The achievements of the Tuskegee Airman during the Second World War were slightly acknowledged in the white press. The remarkable baseball feats of the men and women who played in the Negro Baseball Leagues only received coverage in papers such as the Pittsburg Courier and the Afro-American Newspaper, both members of the NNPA. Editorial giants such as John H. Sengstacke, the publisher of the Chicago Defender and Daisy Bates, the founder of the Arkansas State Press helped to shape the social fabric of America during the 20th century. They and so many other NNPA publishers provided the news sources for the messages of social activists such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, legal scholars such as Justice Thurgood Marshall and elected officials such as Congresswoman Barbara Jordan. During my tenure as chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus I recognized the NNPA for its exemplary work and its standards of excellence that continue until this very day. A 2012 study by NNPA and Nielsen, a global consumer research organization, projected a $1.1 trillion buying power presence by African Americans in the year 2015. The study suggested that NNPA news outlets are a preferable way for marketers to reach consumers. The Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and NNPA have been partners in improving the American economic and political climate for all of our citizens. It is a vital partnership that will continue, I believe, for years to come. The Truth about Payday Loans By Dedrick Muhammad, Sr. Director NAACP Economic Department
Many Americans are increasingly turning to high interest, short term loans to try to make ends meet, but a brief overview of payday lending's problematic setup shows that it's often a false solution to a false problem. Payday lenders claim to be a convenient source of credit for low- to moderate-income families in a budget crisis. Yet a revealing study from Pew Research shows that contrary to common assumptions, borrowers typically use payday loans to pay for day-to-day expenses, not emergencies. Payday loan centers tend to concentrate in minority neighborhoods underserved by mainstream banks, capitalizing on economic vulnerabilities brought on by decades of discriminatory legislation, financial deregulation and a decline in savings. Lower-income workers use payday loans to try to reconcile their stagnant wages with the rising cost of living, only to find that they've added another bill to their budget. With little or no savings, borrowers struggle
to pay o๏ฌ the loan balance on time amid sky-high predatory interest rates, leading them into what consumer advocates call the debt trap. Payday lenders regularly mislead their customers by advertising their fees as a dollar amount rather than an APR, or annual percentage rate. Paying a $50 fee for a loan of $500 over a period of two weeks may not seem that bad at first glance, but that fee overlooks the fact that borrowers take an average of five to eight months to pay back their loans. If you calculate the loan's APR, or what that loan would cost over the course of a year, the true interest rate balloons to a level far beyond that of most credit cards and bank loans -- a whopping 260 percent. Doing the math is essential to avoid ruinous setups o๏ฌered by lenders such as Western Sky, which o๏ฌers a $5,075 loan that can lead to an appalling $40,872 in repayment. A payday loan may seem like a short-term fix, but it's ultimately just another expense. In today's economy there are no easy answers for low- to
moderate-income Americans struggling to pay the bills, but what will clearly never work is adding another high-cost loan. However di๏ฌcult, the only path forward is to reconcile your cost of living with your income by evaluating areas where you can cut costs and make the most of your income. This means scaling back on extras and creating a long-term, sustainable budget that enables you to invest in your future. When faced with a real emergency, don't discount relying on your friends and family. Many borrowers go to payday lenders to avoid borrowing from family and friends, only to end up asking for assistance later to get out of the debt trap. You may also investigate viable loan options at mainstream banks and financial institutions by assessing their APR and fees. And as you continue to trim your day-to-day costs to fit your income, your goal should be to build up a savings cushion for emergencies -- that's money you can loan to yourself, interest free.

Affordable Care Act at 3: Consumer Protections By Kathleen Sebelius Secretary of Health and Human Services In the past, too many parents had to worry about how they would pay the mortgage or the car payment if their sick children were dropped from insurance coverage. Victims of breast cancer worried about what would happen to them or their families if they reached a lifetime limit on coverage and no longer could afford treatment. These were real concerns for real people. Because of the health care law, however, they can put these worries aside and know they are getting a better value for their premium dollars. The Affordable Care Act brings an end to some of the worst insurance industry practices that have kept affordable health coverage out of reach for millions of Americans, especially when they needed it most. Under the health care law, consumers can be confident that their insurance will protect them if they get sick and their families wonโt be crushed by medical bills. As we observe the third anniversary of the President signing the health care law, let me tell you what this means in real terms to many American families: For Alycia Steinberg of Towson, MD, whose 4-year-old Avey has leukemia, the health care law gives her the ability to focus on her daughterโs health without
worrying that she might be denied coverage because of her illness. Tracy Wirtanen-DeBenedet of Appleton, WI, can manage her 10-year-old sonโs fight against recurring tumors without worrying about his health insurance being denied or coverage capped at a lifetime dollar limitโthe health care law makes lifetime limits illegal. Judy Lamb of Colorado is being treated for breast can cer that has spread to her bones and liver. These treatments cost hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but Judy says she is no longer โfreaked outโ by the possibility that her insurer will cut off her treatment by imposing a lifetime dollar cap on her coverage of essential health benefits. Judy is doing so well now, sheโs thinking about going back to work as a nurse. In addition to helping those with great need, the health care law helps us all stay healthy in the first place. Consumers now have the right to many vital preventive services at no outof-pocket cost. According to a new report, about 71 million Americans in private insurance plans received expanded coverage of preventive services, such as mammograms and other cancer screenings, flu shots, and cholesterol checks, at no additional charge in 2011 and 2012. In addition, insurance plans are now covering without cost-sharing more
prevention-related services for women, such as well-woman visits, breastfeeding support and supplies, and gestational diabetes screening. This will guarantee nearly 47 million women access to these vital services at no charge. Medicare beneficiaries are also eligible for key preventive services at no out-of-pocket cost. Last year, more than 34 million seniors and people with disabilities on Medicare used at least one free preventive service, such as mammograms and cholesterol screenings. Even more new protections will apply to most plans beginning in 2014. The new protections will prevent insurers from denying coverage because of a pre-existing condition like asthma or heart disease, or charging more because of a personโs gender or occupation. That means an insurer will no longer be able to charge women more than men for the same coverage or charge firefighters, first responders, and others more just because of their jobs. Being a woman will no longer be a pre-existing condition. The bottom line is consumer protections and preventive services under
the Affordable Care Act are giving millions of Americans more for their health care dollars. And beginning October 1, 2013, qualified individuals will be able to shop for health insurance based on benefits, quality and price through the Health Insurance Marketplace (otherwise known as an Exchange) in their state. Should you need help sorting through your options, the Marketplace will offer experts and tools free of charge to assist you. The Affordable Care Act is giving you greater control over the care you need and deserve. Learn more about the key features of the Affordable Care Act at www.healthcare.gov/law/features. Find out about the Health Insurance Marketplace and sign up for email and text updates at https://signup.healthcare.gov. Follow Secretary Sebelius on Twitter at @Sebelius.

Dear Gwen:
Dear Joan:
I have been married for seven years and the marriage has been horrible from the get-go. In short, Gwendolyn, I have suffered abuse, abandonment, disrespect and dishonesty. My mother advised me not to marry him. I have truly regretted not taking her advice. The problem continuedโฆ.My husband left me because I refused to take a job in a rundown hotel in a rundown section of town. He was trying to push me into danger but he didnโt have a job at all. After I refused to take the job, he started calling me names. He tried to assure me I was a nobody. I couldnโt take care of my child and that I was stupid. About six months ago, he called and said he didnโt want to be married anymore. From that point I
Your husband more than likely already had his new friend. Do not become bitter with him. He is not worth your thoughts. It is only a matter of time before he starts to mistreating her as well. National media takes notice as Jasmine Guy continues to speak out against child sex trafficking for "I Am Not Yours!"
Cristy Paul (HLN), Mona Stephen (Co Founder/CEO - Not Yours!), Jasmine Guy(Spokesperson)
ATLANTA- On the heels of a successful campaign launch for"I Am Not Yours!", a campaign committed to taking a stand against child sexual exploitation, Jasmine Guy has been making her case in national media with the likes of NPR, CNN's Suzanne Malveaux, Hu๏ฌngton Post and most recently on HLN's "Raising America" where she discussed the disturbing statistics associated with child sex tra๏ฌcking, an issue that falls under the Human tra๏ฌcking/sex slavery o๏ฌenses. Ms. Guy spoke on the very illusive and persuasive ways children between the ages of 12 - 17 are victimized by child sex tra๏ฌckers and why adults have the ultimate responsibility of protecting our children. She also spoke to key ways adults can tell if a child is the victim of a child sex exploiter.
The I Am Not Yours! project mission under the Not Yours! brand is to financially support organizations who spread awareness and o๏ฌer viable solutions in the fight against child sex tra๏ฌcking by donating proceeds from purchased brand product. In January, President Obama declared the month as National Slavery and Human Tra๏ฌcking Prevention Month. The president wrote that, "tra๏ฌcking networks operate both domestically and trans-nationally and although abuses disproportionately a๏ฌect women and girls, the victims of this ongoing global tragedy are men, women and children of all ages.", an issue that Ms. Guy spoke to specifically in her HLN interview.
Syndicated radio host Michael Baisden bids farewell to radio Nationally syndicated radio personality Michael Baisden announced a hiatus from his radio show today on his Facebook page this morning that will begin on April 1, 2013. Baisden, who commands a daily audience of over seven million listeners, states he is unable to discuss the particulars but concluded that a deal could not be made on mutually agreeable terms. Recognized as one of the most influential men in radio, his "Michael Baisden Show" is one of the top rated afternoon drive radio programs heard in the top urban markets. He is also a TV talk show host, film-maker and New York Times best-selling author with nearly two million books in print. Now in his tenth year on the air, Baisden wants his radio family to know he did everything in his power to continue his "Michael Baisden Show" without interruption. "We're already planning to return to the air as soon as possible in a way that will give the 'Michael Baisden Show' a more direct relationship with our a๏ฌliates, and most importantly, our listeners," cites Pamela Exum, his business manager. Baisden began his career as an author, self publishing several best selling books including "Never Satisfied," "Men Cry In The Dark," "The Maintenance Man I and II," and "God's Gift to Women." Two of his books were adapted to stage plays, starring such renowned actors as Richard Roundtree and Billy Dee Williams. His radio highlights include one of his proudest moments when on September 20, 2007, he passionately and skillfully spearheaded the famous Jena 6 March in Jena, Louisiana. This historic and momentous occasion garnered tens PAGE 9

of thousands of citizens of all races to peacefully march in support of six young men who had been unfairly treated by the justice system. Another historic year was 2008 when Michael Baisden endorsed Senator Barack Obama and went on to celebrate President Obama's victory with over 4,000 fans at a watch party in Miami on election night. The Obama camp, along with millions of listeners, credited him with being one of the major forces behind this historic victory to elect the first African American to the Presidency of the United States and in his re-election in 2012. In December 2009, Baisden called for a National Mentor Training Day and announced his plans for a 2010 nationwide campaign. He pledged up to $350,000 of his own money to be donated in over 72 markets he would visit on a bus tour. The outreach was named "One Million Mentors National Campaign To Save Our Kids." His work with the Free Clinics, Trayvon Martin, Black & Missing Foundation, and national ongoing partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and Mentoring Brothers In Action are all a big part of what made the "Michael Baisden Show" so successful. Baisden still vows to continue his Michael Baisden Live Tour with his co-host, comedian George Willborn. It's a One Night Only event with seminars, networking, a comedy show, and an 'old school' after party. "If the a๏ฌliates still want us to come to town, we'll be there," says Baisden. AUSTIN -- Sen. Wendy Davis has filed a constitutional amendment proposal, which if passed and approved by the voters, would return $4 billion to their school districts over the next two years from an estimated $12 billion in the Rainy Day Fund. Sen. Davis was joined on the bill by Sens. John Whitmire, Rodney Ellis, Eddie Lucio, Royce West, Jose Rodriguez, and Sylvia Garcia. "The people of Texas have borne the cost of $5.4 billion in budget cuts to their schools. And, the Rainy Day Fund belongs to the people," said Davis. "They have the right decide if they want to use a portion of the estimated $12 billion in the Fund to hire teachers, acquire technology or lower their property taxes." Senate Joint Resolution 63 would make a onetime appropriation to school districts to help them to restore part of the $5.4 billion in budget cuts made by the state in the last session. If approved by two-thirds of the Legislature and passed by voters, the proposal would send $4 billion to the Foundation School Program. The funding would flow to districts by increasing the basic allotment -- the amount ยฉ Disney, ยฉ Disney/Pixar.

districts receive per student -- by approximately $400 for each student for 2014 and 2015. A district could use the additional funding for any allowable basic allotment expenditure. School boards may decide to use the money to provide property tax relief, hire teachers, reduce class sizes, repair facilities, acquire technology or high-speed Internet service, or provide school security systems. "The state has a constitutional obligation to fund public education. Since this Legislature and the state's leadership has abandoned that responsibility, this proposal would allow Texans to take the matter in their own hands," said Davis. "Since Texas families are on the hook for cuts to schools, it is only right that they decide whether they want to use their Rainy Day Fund to restore those cuts." In February, a state district court ruled that state leaders violated our stateโs Constitution by failing to adequately fund our schools and meet our most basic obligation to the students and parents of Texas children. A statewide poll taken in February showed that 69 percent of Texans support restoring public school funding cuts. Republican primary voters supported restoration by a margin of 7 points. If passed by the Legislature, Texans would vote on the constitutional amendment proposal on November 5, 2013.

In our library Psychologist releases book highlighting psychologyฤลบs role in the school-toprison pipeline Philadelphia, PA - Motivational and inspirational presenter, Dr. Umar Johnson, a descendant of Frederick Douglass, the 19th century Abolitionist, releases his highlyanticipated 1st book detailing how learning disabilities and psychiatric medications are fueling the schoolto-prison pipeline. Psycho-Academic Holocaust: The Special Education & ADHD Wars Against Black Boys discusses such topics as the movement to eliminate public education, the role of Black language/Ebonics in the miseducation process, the psychopharmaceutical control of the mental health establishment, the intentional mis-diagnosing of Black boys for economic gain, mandatory high school graduation exams and schoolhouse racism. This book is the first of its kind to take readers on an inside tour of the special education machine and how it operates. It is also the first book of the 21st century to explore each of the four major disruptive behavior disorders (ADHD, CD, ODD, DBD-NOS) and how these diagnoses poorly discriminate between normal and abnormal behaviors amongst Black boys. A very easy yet powerful read, Psycho-Academic Holocaust has been written for laypersons with everyday language, and should be read by all adults who care about the future of young Black males in America, England, Canada and the Caribbean. An entire chapter has been dedicated to teaching parents and teachers how to eliminate challenging and disruptive behaviors without medication. Still another
chapter, entitled "Frequently Asked Questions," provides AfricanAmerican parents, youth workers, and advocates with vital information they can use to help protect AfricanAmerican males from psychiatric racism and educational Jim Crowism. The author is a doctor of clinical psychology, certified school psychologist and child therapist, with 15 years of experience working with at-risk children of color. As an expert educational diagnostician, Dr. Umar works with Intellectually Disabled, Autistic, Emotionally Disturbed, and Learning Disabled children and their families.

Not Just Vanilla From fashioner to painter, DJ Naehritz has been an artist most of her life. Although a native Texan, she spent many of her formative years on the west coast. Having lived in a liberating atmosphere influences her work today. Her bold, impasto abstractions are highly atypical and pull the viewer into the work to consider the interplay of form and texture. Her use of color and the way her palate intermingles is at times warming and sensual, other times bold and engaging. Her compelling compositions are rich with complex texture and depth.
