He was also active with fellow journalist organizations like NABJ, DFW/ABC and Journalism Workshop. We’ll miss him, but know he will cover the black community there with the same ethics and enthusiasm as he did in Dallas.

For those who don’t know Gordon, he is a strong advocate and kind spirited person. When he says he is going to do something, he makes every effort to honor his commitment. I first met Gordon when he worked at Minority Opportunity News. From there he had stints at the Dallas Examiner, Dallas Weekly and with his own publication. He left for a brief hiatus and returned, determined to cover the African American community, as though he never left. He has joined me on KKDA but I know he got a real joy out of hosting his own show on DFWiRadio.com. Gordon has to go take care of business with his family in Mississippi. I sincerely hope that his pen, nor his voice will be silenced -- that he will continue being a voice for the voiceless.

A HIGHWAY TO FREEDOM THE QUEST FOR PEACE

For Immediate Release For More Information Contact Taroue Brooks tbrooks@cjonespr.com 202-431-1119 Actor Malik Yoba Supports Book Focusing

As we stand here today, At the crossroads of freedom and equality, The celebration of the emancipation proclamation must not become a novelty. That great march was the start, To engage a nations heart, To pull back the veil of discrimination and oppression And to cease and release the rights of a people, And honor our Declarations intended predilections. And though we have lived to behold A man of color residing in our countries most prestigious house, There is still so much work to do, We must remain vigilant and persistent, Of this there can be no doubt. His coming was the hailing of an inspired notion, That we can be what we choose when motivated by devotion. He exemplifies that we are not separate and often more than equal, His second term in office is a historic sequel. We must strive to bring liberation through education. We must teach our sons and daughters To look beyond their situations. Let us inspire them to nurture and caress their dreams, For then shall we all be able to lift our voices and sing. Like Martin we must live our dreams, Like Malcolm we must do what is necessary, Like Medgar we need to have the courage To not let our voices be buried. Let us unite and work to bring calm To the chaos in our streets, For then and only then Shall we know the majesty Of that elusive jewel known as peace. ZEMILL Copyright 2013 All Rights Reserved. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

A Pope of the People

Critical deadline looms

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

The selection of former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina as the new leader of the world’s one billion Catholics is a welcomed event to those of us who believe that a central part of faith is work that uplifts people who are economically burdened and bruised. By all accounts from those who are familiar with him and his work, the new pope is a profound intellectual who has avoided the regal trappings of office. Instead, he lived in a simple apartment and traveled on public transportation while a senior church official in Argentina. Once selected he quickly took the name of Saint Francis of Assisi, who was known for his work with people who had little wealth, but great faith. Legend has it that once while praying he heard a voice that said “go Francis and repair my house.” Born in 1182, Saint Francis founded the Franciscan order whose members were devoted to the service of others, particularly those who found themselves in need. His life was one that many priests throughout the history of the church have attempted to emulate for its depth of belief and its vast charity. A fan of soccer in his native country, Pope Francis refused to be driven in a chauffeured limousine and prepared his own meals. He is the first Jesuit Pope and is also the first non-European Pope in 1200 years. I believe that Pope Francis will be inclusive, that he will seek more diversity in the leadership of the church and that he will place greater emphasis on the development of the faith in South America and Africa, two continents where the church’s population continues to grow. According to the Pew Research Center, the five countries with the highest numbers of Catholics are Brazil (126 m), Mexico (96 m), the Philippines (75.5 m), the United States (75.3 m) and Italy (49 m). There are 31 million Catholics in Argentina, the Pope’s land of birth. Thirty-nine percent of the world’s Catholics live in Latin America and the Caribbean. No other part of the world has a larger percentage. While serving as a Cardinal in Argentina, Pope Francis spontaneously washed and kissed the feet of twelve patients ravaged with HIV/AIDS during a hospital visit. He said to those with him that he was not one to forget the “sick and the poor.” Certainly, he will prove himself to be a pope of the people. U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson is the highest-ranking Texan on the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure and a senior member of the Science Committee. She represents the 30th Congressional District of Texas, which, includes Downtown Dallas, Fair Park, Kessler Park, Old East Dallas, Pleasant Grove, South Dallas & South Oak Cliff; all of Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville, Hutchins, Lancaster & Wilmer and parts of Ferris, Glenn Heights, South Grand Prairie, Oak Lawn, Ovilla, Uptown/Victory Park and West Dallas.

MARCH 29, 2013

By Monifa Bandele MomsRising.org There is a deadline looming of great concern to Black parents of school-aged children. Last month the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a proposed rule that would update the nutritional guidelines for snacks sold in schools for the first time in 30 years. The public has until April 9th, to make comments about how strong or weak the final rule should be. This is huge. School-aged children consume about 50 percent of their calories at school and 40 percent of all students supplement or substitute their lunch meal with snacks sold in vending machines and a la carte lines. For African American children, girls in particular, the strength of this rule is a matter of life quality and expectancy. You've heard the stats. Black women and girls are suffering from nutrition related illnesses at a higher rate than any other demographic in America. Heart disease is the number one killer of all women, and black women are more likely to develop heart disease than other groups of women. A shocking 78 percent of Black women are overweight or obese, and 37 percent of us have high

blood pressure. Sadly for our girls, African American women develop hypertension much earlier in life than our counterparts. Why does it start earlier? Here's one factor: according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 25 percent of Black girls ages six to eleven are overweight or obese, making them more susceptible to Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension during their lifetimes, specifically during their childhoods. This is a national emergency! Thanks to several public information campaigns - including First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign - people are finally beginning to take notice of the skyrocketing rate of nutrition-related illnesses occurring among all children and focusing more on physical activity. Schools and communities across the country are also realizing that children, just like adults, need consistent exercise to achieve a healthy life. However, according to a report released last year by the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, physical activity alone won't be enough to change the tide for Black girls. They need different approaches to prevent obesity including a reduction in calories. Our children and families are consuming too much junk--food that is high in calories and void of nutrition. Children by nature are easily influenced. That is why we don't allow children and teens to purchase alcohol and tobacco. They are not equipped with the same decision-making tools as adults. At the

end of the day, children are at the mercy of what is available to them at home and at school. We've got to be vigilant about making sure that there are healthy options in both places! Access to healthy foods in our schools can make a world of difference in the lives of our children. A study by the research and policy group Bridging the Gap found that overweight or obese fifth graders who lived in states with strong laws restricting the sale of unhealthy snacks and beverages in schools were less likely to remain overweight or obese by the eighth grade than were their peers in states without these laws . Right now, we all have the chance to make sure that there are healthier snack options for children in schools everywhere. The USDA is currently seeking public input on proposed nutritional standards which will allow schools to offer healthier snack foods for our children and limit junk food served to students. This is where you as parent and community member come in. Let's make high nutritional standard the norm everywhere. The proposed USDA rule will be as good as we demand it to be. Our voices are needed because we have the most to lose. There is less than a month left to send comments to the USDA. Go to http://Moms.ly/USDAnow or text "NOJUNK" to Rising (747464) today to make your voice heard on this important issue. Monifa Bandele is campaign director for MomsRising.org, a national organization with over a million members across the country advocating for the health and economic security of our families.

NEW Global African Publication launches in Canada: Afri-Culture Ottawa, ON-- Over the last decade a number of long withstanding ethnic publications have fell under economic pressures to a closure. Although many news sources have been lost, there is a new generation of young entrepreneurs ready to take the reigns and build sustainable media companies to fill in the information gap to the audiences highly neglected in commercial media. Raissa Nkuba, a young Congolese-descent entrepreneur, founded and launched Afri-Culture in January 2013. Afri-Culture is an online publication that focuses on the

'state of affairs' in African news around the world. As the African Diaspora's population grows, the need for news on the "Motherland" is much needed.

Solely in its third month of launching this year, Afri-Culture has already over 6,000 followers on its social media accounts, and a growing global readership at www.Afri-Culture.com "Afri-Culture was founded to celebrate, honor and empower people of African descent. At Afri-Culture, we take pride in the fact that we promote strictly positive information involving the African continent. Most of what is shown on the news in relation to Africa is usually negative. Why aren't we seeing news regarding Africa's incredibly fast development in the last couple of years?

It's very important that we demonstrate a balanced perspective of the African continent. It's true--there is poverty in Africa, but the African continent is also home to some of the greatest authors, musicians and thinkers. Who is telling their stories? Afri-Culture was founded to tell the many stories of Africa. We are taking up this cause to empower and inspire the future generation. Although, the publication has been around for three months, it has quickly gained a significant number of fans and supporters -- future proving people are yearning for this information."

I want to be pretty like the other girls Dear Gwendolyn: I am 16 and just beginning to date. My mother is a product of ‘not dating’ until the age of 16. Although I had no desire to date until now, waiting was not a problem. I have been to several parties with my girlfriends and they were all asked to dance by a boy, but I had no offers. That bothered me until I looked into my mirror and discovered I was not pretty like the other girls’. Janice

I want you to focus on receiving the highest degrees you can – that is more important than to stop and waste precious time being concerned about your looks. As you move into adulthood, you will see those same girls who are popular with dates looking old, run down, beat out, and ugly. What they once had as beauty will be gone. But for yourself, you will always look elegant and continue to look elegant, as you grow old gracefully. Janice, think about it. Another observation you will come to know is that when young girls your age are popular, believe me, it is not their beauty. Roland Martin named NABJ's Journalist of the Year WASHINGTON -- -The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) has announced that Roland S. Martin, nationally syndicated columnist, television host, and radio and television commentator, is to receive the organization's Journalist of the Year award. It is one of NABJ's most coveted honors celebrating the accomplishments of black journalists and those who support blacks in the media. Martin was selected for the award by NABJ's Board of Directors. "I am enormously thankful and humbled that NABJ has bestowed this amazing honor on me for my work as a fearless voice in advocating the critical issues facing voters in the 2012 election, but especially as they relate to African Americans," said Martin. "I hope this honor serves as a lesson to any young or veteran journalist that Black media platforms are just as essential and important to us today as they have always been. Before CNN, TV One offered me a TV platform for my commentaries, as well my own show. After CNN, TV One and Tom Joyner, are still there. It pleases me greatly to be at a place where our voices and images are the norm, and not the exception. I'm enormously thankful for the opportunity." Martin currently is host and managing editor of TV One's Washington Watch with Roland Martin, and a senior analyst for The Tom Joyner Morning Show. He is also a nationally syndicated columnist with Creators Syndicate and a contributor to CNN. "Roland Martin has had an enviable career as a multimedia journalist, becoming a respected and trusted voice in print, on air and online," said NABJ President Gregory Lee, Jr. "He is unapologetic about his quest to provide well-rounded coverage of the AfricanAmerican community, and to provide unique insights to diverse audiences across the many platforms on which he is asked to contribute on a regular basis." Those who nominated Martin noted his important coverage of voter suppression, perhaps the biggest story of the 2012 presidential election. "No other African-American journalist and member of NABJ brought more news and analysis to black communities about the most important story of 2012 than Roland Martin," said Vanessa Williams, former NABJ President and an editor at The Washington Post. "As managing editor and host of Washington Watch on TV One, Roland consistently offered journalism that reflected the hopes and fears of many African American voters as they anxiously watched to see whether Barack Obama would win a second term as president of the United States." PAGE 9

!

Earlier in his career, Martin was a radio talk show host for WVON-AM in Chicago. He is the former executive editor and general manager of The Chicago Defender, one of the nation's oldest black newspapers. He was the founding news editor for Savoy Magazine, and the founding editor of BlackAmericaWeb.com. A published author, he has written three books: "Listening to the Spirit Within: 50 Perspectives on Faith,"

"Speak, Brother! A Black Man's View of America," and "The First: President Barack Obama's Road to the White House as originally reported by Roland S. Martin." A lifetime member of the National Association of Black Journalists, Martin served as the organization's first national student representative, and as national secretary of the board from 2009 until 2011.

Martin is a graduate of Texas A&M University and Louisiana Baptist University. He is married to the Rev. Jacquie Hood Martin. The couple resides in Washington, D.C. An advocacy group established in 1975 in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization for journalists of color in the nation, and provides career development as well as educational and other support to its members.

Kenny Jay joins I Messenger Enterprises!

As a kid growing up in Ft. Worth, TX, Kenny J loved listening to the radio, but not for the music; it was for the personalities that gave each song a life, a story, a meaning. When he turned 16, he bought his first microphone and would broadcast to his parents and their friends. It was just fun then until, with a little help from his PAGE 10

!

mother, he got his first job as a radio DJ in Tulsa, OK, doing middays at 18. To the listeners at Power 1550AM/KBLK in Tulsa, OK, he was known as “Shaggy B”and from day one “Shaggy B” ruled the midday airwaves entertaining listeners with his wit and playing all the hits. “I think I was made to do radio,” the talent formerly known as “Shaggy B” says about his success at Power 1550AM. Other stations discovered “Shaggy B’s” talent and loved the skills but hated the name. It was at his second station, Mix 102.3/KTOW that “Kenny J” was born. Although he enjoyed ruling the Oklahoma airwaves, there was a longing to make a mark in his hometown. When the station he grew up listening to called to offer a job he jumped at the chance and packed up his life in Oklahoma to work for K104/KKDA-FM. His time at his hometown station did not last as long as he had hoped so Kenny J’s talent took him to North Carolina. His stint in North Carolina was also short lived as K104 came knocking again

and this time the relationship would last for a decade. During his 10 years at K104, “Big Baby” Kenny J held on to the number one spot in the middays “making the ladies happy and helping the brothers out.” When his tenure at K104 came to an end, Kenny J took his skills to the city of Indianapolis, IN at Radio One’s WHHH/ Hot 96.3, followed by a stint in West Palm Beach, FL at CBS WMBX 102.3 where he also lent his hand at sharing his passion for radio with the students at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. Home came calling again, this time it was 105.7/KRNB that rang and once again Kenny J came through dominating in the ratings with his natural gift. The skill did not go without notice, and when it was time for him to leave KRNB, Kenny J landed a spot at KSOC Old School 94.5. At Old School Kenny J is a lot more than the voice you hear In the afternoon, he has expanded his talents to much more, bringing you the music he knows you’ll enjoy! Radio is not the only love in Kenny J’s life -- there’s his son Trevor, 14, and his step son, Nicholas, 7, whom he enjoys hanging with. He will also be tying the knot and jumping the broom with his soul mate, Shaundrell, on April 5, 2013. Kenny Jay also enjoys traveling, sports, movies and writing. Yes writing…bet you did not know he is also a published author? Well he is, so in addition to Kenny Jay’s columns in I Messenger and Texas Metro News, be on the look out for his relationship book Guide to Making Ladies Happy, with just about everything a man needs to know for pleasing a woman. It is only natural that he write a book about making the ladies happy because… that’s his job!!! !

The Real Kenny Jay By Kenny Jay

kennyjayonair@gmail.com

Let me start by saying I am extremely excited about writing my first column here. I would also like to encourage you to give me your feedback. I thought long and hard about what to write about, with so much going on not only nationally, but locally. There’s the Gun Law discussion, the economy, etc. I decided to go in a totally different direction. I would like to discuss BEAUTY SHOP TALK!!!! That’s right, beauty shop talk. My lady goes all the time, and I talk to a lot of women on the radio all day every day, and it’s what I’ve been told that is discussed in the beauty shop among other things. A lady once called into my show and asked a very traditional/popular question: Why do all man cheat? Oh boy!!! Here we go. First and foremost, all men DO NOT CHEAT! I’m one who does not cheat on my queen. However, that being said, a lot of men do. Today I’m going to tell you why and how to know if your man is cheating. Are you ready? lol. First let’s address “Do all men Cheat?” Short answer NO...Now on to the why men cheat part, believe it or not ladies it’s a simple answer: BECAUSE HE WANTS TO. While talking to this lady on my radio show, she asked “Kenny when you and your homeboys are talking do they ever talk about cheating on their ladies?” I told her that it is really not a conversation that men have. Now I will say me and the fellows could be having a generic conversation and a attractive lady walks by, a man may say something to the effect of, “MAN SHE IS FINE!” But not often will a man tell another man he is cheating on his woman. It is my opinion that if a man decides to cheat it is probably no feelings/ emotions involved. It’s strictly physical. Now of course that is still no reason nor does it make it right. Now I believe for a woman who may have decided to step out on her man would probably be more emotional. And fellows, remember it’s probably somebody she is known for quite some time. So basically at the end of my long conversation with this lady, I told her there’s good news and bad news. Bad news -- unfortunately some men cheat. Good news -- all men do not cheat. On to the “how do you know if your man is cheating?” Well ladies I have another simple answer -- you’re not crazy -- you know when something is different. But let’s have some fun. Here are a few things to look for. 1. Does your man come home and turn his phone off or put it on vibrate? 2. Is he not interested in having sex as much anymore? Listen if your man is cheating, you probably know who she is, and it’s probably somebody from his past because for some reason some men go backwards. In closing if you feel something is not right ask questions, and if you’re satisfied with the answers then your man is probably not cheating. However if you don’t feel comfortable with the answers you may have a problem. Now if your man comes home late and smells like another woman, ask him to give you some loving and if he says “no” your man may just be cheating... Don’t forget to give me your feedback at kennyjayonair@gmail.com Listen to me weekdays from 2p-7p on Old School 94.5 And remember: What’s my job? That’s right -- To make women happy! KJ !

When most people think of substance abuse, heroin, marijuana and prescription drugs often come to mind. However, one substance that can be bought over-the counter legally is among the most destructive and sadly, overlooked. Alcohol is society’s oldest and most widely used mind-altering chemical, it’s so ingrained in our culture, that it’s difficult to imagine it as illegal for adults. Cocaine, heroin, and now prescription drugs continue to occupy the headlines—as indeed they should—but alcohol deserves the same attention. Our nation’s alcohol problem may not seem as scandalous, but it’s just as serious. When compared to many drugs, alcohol is as equally lifethreatening claiming more than 80,000 lives a year. © Disney, © Disney/Pixar.

As April is Alcohol Awareness Month, below is a list of six destructive powers of alcohol we’ve brought to the forefront – facts that are often overlooked: 1. Alcohol is indeed a drug. What’s more, it’s a drug that carries especially high risks for adolescents, whose brains are still developing. 2. Alcohol is a financial burden. Excessive drinking causes more public health problems than all other drugs

Barbara Pierce Bush, CEO and co-founder of Global Health Corps, is the keynote speaker of the New Friends New Life "WINGS" Luncheon on Friday, April 12, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 300 Reunion Blvd. in Dallas. Her mother Laura Bush will introduce her at the luncheon. New Friends New Life (NFNL) restores and empowers trafficked girls and sexually exploited women and their children. By providing access to education, job training, interim financial assistance, mental health and spiritual support, New Friends New Life helps women and their children overcome abuse, addiction, poverty and limited opportunities. Global Health Corps (GHC) mobilizes young professionals of diverse backgrounds from around the world to develop health care programs for poor communities. One of the GHC programs provides healthcare for trafficked and exploited women and girls in the Washington, D.C. area. New Friends New Life helped 657 women and teenage girls and their children last year. National statistics show that 80 percent of trafficked teens are runaways and more than 90 percent of exploited women were sexually abused as a child.

combined and according to the CDC, costs society $224 billion annually. 3. More people abuse alcohol than illicit drugs. Eight percent of Americans over the age of 12 abuse illicit drugs. 34 percent abuse or misuse alcohol. 4. Alcohol destroys the brain. There’s no evidence to show that heroin—a drug perceived to be highly dangerous—causes extensive structural changes in the brain. But there is evidence that this occurs as a result of long-term heavy drinking. Also, heroin withdrawal is less likely to be fatal than alcohol withdrawal. 5. Just because alcohol is legal doesn’t mean it’s safe. We know that legal prescriptions drugs, if misused, are anything but harmless and cause a growing number of deaths each year. The same is true of alcohol. Drunk driving—one of the many causes of alcohol-related fatalities— accounts for 32 percent of all traffic deaths. 6. Alcohol-related deaths are preventable. In fact, heavy drinking, including binge and underage drinking, is the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States. We must invest in education, screening, and treatment efforts, so the public better understands alcohol’s dangers, and a person struggling with alcoholism can get help—before it’s too late. Deni Carise, Ph.D. is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in behavioral health and substance abuse treatment and research and has been part of the recovery community for over 25 years. Cathy, a survivor and protégé in the NFNL program, is like more than 90 percent of exploited women who were victims of early childhood sexual abuse. "New Friends New life is very good at not giving a handout, but helping you to learn," she said. Cathy credits New Friends New Life with saving her life. "They help you to realize how much true power you have in yourself. Cathy was exploited for five years. When she learned about New Friends New Life, she utilized their resources to start a new life. Cathy is now a member of the NFNL Leadership Circle and mentors new women entering the program. The "WINGS" luncheon event Chairman is Gina Betts, partner with Locke Lord LLP. The honorary chairmen are mother and daughter Lana Andrews and Natalie McGuire, community volunteers associated with Andrews Distributing. CBS 11 News This Morning Anchor Brendan Higgins is the MC for the luncheon. The presenting sponsor is Texas Health Resources. "Texas Health is committed to our mission to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve;this includes a focus on improving women's health," said Doug Hawthorne, FACHE, CEO, Texas Health Resources. "We are very proud of the education, prevention and outreach efforts and accomplishments of our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program, which complements the remarkable work and efforts of New Friends New Life," he said. In our library Love, Men and Money by Jacent M. Mpalyenkana

Jacent M. Mpalyenkana, has published a Humorous Self-help Book on relationships-for women, titled- Love, Men and Money

Los Angeles, California-- Love, Men and Money, a self-help book on relationships especially written for women. The book is based on intensive research that dissects some of the major social, cultural, economical, environmental, and personal factors that influence women’s attitudes to, and magnetism for meaningful relationships. Love, Men and Money, includes detailed discussions and healing exercises based on proven techniques such as the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Neuro-linguistic Programming and Ho’oponopono (a Hawaiian ancient Healing Technique), with intent to assist women in their healing, and selfempowerment expeditions, and then program themselves into Love, Men and Money magnets. The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), one of the major techniques that the author employs in

the healing exercises, works through several meridian points positioned on the body-as discovered by the founders of acupuncture over 5000 years. By tapping on these points, one is able to free him/herself from any blockages, and the root causes-that could be overcrowding them from attracting love, men and money. Neuro-linguistic Programming is a technique that helps people think, communicate and plan better. Ho’oponopono on the other hand, is a spiritual practice that works by directing one’s conscious mind to request his/her unconscious mind to clean up any emotional baggage that has been stored in the form of data and/or information in the unconscious-bank-from which experience is retrieved. The book comes at a time when the issue of love has basically lost its spark. The single, divorce, and separation rates are on the heave. People have given up investing in it. “It is a lot of work,” commented a 33 year old single mother of two kids. Jacent M Mpalyenkana, is Spiritual Empowerment Coach, an Advanced Emotional Freedom Technique, Neuro-linguistic Programmer, and Ho’oponopono Practitioner. She is also a business expert with a Post Graduate Diploma in Negotiations, a first class Masters’ degree in Business Administration and Bachelors’ degree in Commerce.

BLACK BLOGGERS CONNECT & CODEBLACK FILMS PRESENT THE "FREE ANGELA" BLOGGING CONTEST IN HONOR OF ANGELA DAVIS WITH $1000 GRAND PRIZE Nationwide (BlackNews.com) -- Black Bloggers Connect(TM), the leading social network for Black bloggers, has teamed up with Codeblack Films to launch The "Free Angela" Blogging Contest. Codeblack Films is a division of Lionsgate Entertainment, distributor for the highly anticipated film, "Free Angela And All Political Prisoners". The film was written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Shola Lynch. "Free Angela" is produced by Shola Lynch, Carole Lambert, Carine Ruszniewski and Sidra Smith. The film's executive producers are Jada Pinkett Smith with Overbrook Entertainment and Shawn "JAY Z" Carter's Roc Nation. Presented by BET Networks, the film will open in select AMC theatres on April 5, 2013. The film focuses on the events that propelled Davis into the national spotlight after she joins the Communist Party, protests with the Black Panthers, and becomes a lead spokesperson for the up-and-coming prison reform movement. Davis was then falsely accused of being involved in the murder of a judge in 1970. Afraid she will not receive a fair trial, Davis flees California and is placed on the FBIs 10 Most Wanted list. Two months later she was captured in New York City. Consequently, the "Free Angela" movement ignited. She endured a two-year legal battle that eventually leads to her acquittal by an all white jury. Angela Davis has since become a symbol of freedom. Her story of political empowerment and social change still inspires millions around the world. BlackBloggersConnect.com and Codeblack Films will award $1000 to the blogger that best blogs about why the "Free Angela" film is necessary. The contest runs from March 7th to April 1st. The winner will be announced on April 5th.
