Temptation can equate to stupidity A wise person once said that “when you know better, you do better.” Another equally intelligent scholar said, “Experience is the best teacher.”

Cheryl Smith After viewing the latest production of director, writer, actor, and all-around media mogul Tyler Perry, movie-goers can combine the two messages and live much more productive and fulfilling lives. Temptation is the tale of a married woman tempted by a business client. Of course there are plenty of lessons to be learned, which is usually the case with Mr. Perry’s works. Sure there is humor, as most of Mr. Perry’s fans have come to expect. But there are also some strong messages that if paid attention to and learned from, could save folks quite a bit of heartache, pain and suffering. Now, that’s a lot easier said that done, I’ll agree! Throughout the movie, folks were talking to the screen and warning the lead character, Judith to beware. In real life, we have all been Judiths from time to time, but it’s easier to see danger when you aren’t the one in danger. There’s a saying that “some people don’t think that fat meat is greasy.”
George E. Curry 5
The lead character in Temptation was warned time and time again but she didn’t pay attention. You’ll have to see the movie yourself to find out what happens. OR you just look at your life or the lives of people around you. Then you’d have to ask yourself questions like: Why do children see their parents die from lung cancer, yet they still continue to smoke? Why do folks see friends and loved ones die from AIDS, but still they have unprotected sex? Or, why do people text and drive or drink and drive when they have seen the horrible stories about accidents resulting from such behavior? There are so many more questions of similar significance. You don’t have to smoke, have unprotected sex or get in an accident. You don’t have to experience cocaine, prescription drugs, or heroin to see how the drugs can destroy your life. Just learn from watching TV One’s hit show Unsung and see how drugs led to the demise or downfall of some of the greatest talents like Marvin Gaye, Phyllis Hyman, Whodini, David Ruffin, Alexander O’Neal and members of several other groups.
Olympus has fallen 21
Or tabloid headlines blazing tales of the abuses by Lindsey Lohan, Robert Downey Jr., John Belushi, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Judy Garland, Anna Nicole Smith, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Charlie Sheen and Billie Holiday, to name a few. You can see the devastation all around you. You can learn from others’ misfortune and do better in your own life. Or you can make a choice that sends your life spiraling out of control. Sadly, folks are living by the “experience is the best teacher” school of thought instead of incorporating in their lives a different theory, namely, “learning from others’ experiences can be the ultimate teacher.” You don’t have to experience EVERYTHING in life to know what it’s about.

Folks should be lining up to see Temptation. If teachers have nothing better to do in school, Temptation is the film they should be showing. Something has to be done as we see so many going down a trail they should have avoided. Hopefully there will be discussion groups at churches and within organizations because with so much information readily at their fingertips, folks just don’t “GET IT!” Unfortunately Judith learned the hard way, and she like many who go to prison or have equally negative experiences, her testimony is poignant and hopefully will make some people think once and then again before doing something stupid!

Can March on Washington’s Unity be Duplicated By George E. Curry
Temptation A wise person once said that “when you know better, you do better.” Another equally intelligent scholar said, “Experience is the best teacher.” After viewing the latest production of director, writer, actor, and all-around media mogul Tyler Perry, movie-goers can combine the two messages and live much more productive and fulfilling lives. You’ll have to see the movie yourself to find out what happens. OR you just look at your life or the lives of people around you. Then you’d have to ask yourself questions like:
Why do children see their parents die from lung cancer, yet they still continue to smoke? Why do folks see friends and loved ones die from AIDS, but still they have unprotected sex? Or, why do people text and drive when they have seen the horrible stories about accidents resulting from such behavior? There are so many more questions of similar significance. You don’t have to smoke, have unprotected sex or get in an accident. You see the devastation all around you. You can learn from others’ misfortune and do better in your own life.
In four months, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. In 1963, the March was jointly called by the Civil Rights Movement’s “Big Six” – A. Philip Randolph, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Roy Wilkins, Whitney Young, James Farmer and John Lewis. At this point, it is unclear whether today’s leaders will come together and rally around the theme of jobs and justice as leaders did on August 28, 1963. Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King, III are planning a march in Washington. Bernice King has announced a commemoration of the “I Have a Dream” speech at the King Center in Atlanta to observe the 50th anniversary. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Dr. King’s old organization, will be holding its annual convention in the nation’s capital the week of the anniversary and is considering holding an activity. The foundation that raised more than $100 million to erect the MLK monument on the National Mall – and was forced by King’s children to drop the reference to Dr. King in its name – is still hoping it can participate in a joint celebration by all of the civil rights groups. Interestingly, the Big Six managed to come together when the Black unemployment rate was 6.7 percent, compared to 3.2 percent for Whites. The unemployment rate for Blacks 20 and older in February was 12.7 percent – nearly double what it was at the time of the March on Washington. Of course, any discussion about the preservation of Dr. King’s legacy invariably involves his three remaining children – Martin III, B e r n i c e a n d D e x t e r. W h i l e appreciating the King family’s desire to protect intellectual property left to them by their father, including his “I Have a Dream” speech, I have been critical of their decision to charge what had been known as the Martin
Luther King National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. a licensing fee of nearly $3 million to use his name, likeness and quotes in conjunction with a monument erected to him on the National Mall. I also upbraided them for, after making the decision to charge a licensing fee, refusing to extend the agreement, forcing the foundation to change its name (it is now The Memorial Foundation) and limit the scope of the monument-connected activities it had planned to advance Dr. King’s legacy. Roland Martin and Joe Williams have an interesting article on rolandmartinreports.com about the controversy. We had a heated discussion Sunday on “Washington Watch with Roland Martin” about the King children’s interaction with Harry Johnson and the group that raised the money for King monument on the Mall, the first to honor an African American. In response to my earlier column on the subject, Armstrong Williams wrote a column claiming I had slandered the King family and “For Mr. Curry to spread the falsehood that the King family is charging schools for the ‘I Have a Dream’ speech is not only wrong, but embarrassing to these good people.” After schooling Armstrong Sunday on the difference between “slander,” defamation that is spoken, and “libel,” which is written, I told him I couldn’t have possibly made that charge because I never used the word “school” anywhere in my column. He waited four months to reply and still didn’t get it right. To his credit, Armstrong acknowledged his error on-air and apologized. During the program Sunday, Roland said he had spoken with Tricia Harris, a King representative, who said the money paid to the Kings was for corporations that exploited Dr. King’s image and they had not received money from the foundation for using quotes and the likeness of Dr. King.
A FAMILY
I said, “She’s lying.” Harris sent me a note taking exception to my comment and said, “It’s a great American tragedy when influential African Americans attack the King family for protecting and benefiting from Dr. King’s work when he set it up that way.” Actually, King, Inc. was created after Dr. King’s assassination. Therefore, he did not “set it up that way.” Second, the licensing agreement does in fact extract a fee from the mall foundation in exchange for using his likeness on materials and quotes at the memorial. Let’s be clear: No one is objecting to the King siblings profiting from their father’s intellectual properties. The issue is, unlike the descendants of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, they are trying to personally profit from a national monument that honors their father and the struggle he led. David Garrow, a Pulitzer Prizewinning King biographer, told the Roland Martin and Joe Williams: “It’s not as if (King, Inc.) is using any of this income for charitable good deeds. We’ve seen none of that whatsoever. It appears to be simply self-enrichment for a small number of people.” As great as he was, the March on Washington wasn’t about Dr. King. It was about jobs and freedom. Sadly, 50 years later, we need a similar march that unites our leaders around those same issues.

ASK THE ADVOCATE Dear Advocate, I was sexually abused by my uncle when I was in the second grade. The worst part about it is that my mother and grandmother blamed me for it and they tried to make to confess, but I never did. I had nightmares that I could not explain for several years as a child. To this day I struggle with memory blocks and putting together all what happened with this terrible man. As bad as that was, the worst part, however, is the fact that my family did not believe me and punished me. As an adult now, I still struggle with anger and depression. I think I’m fairly successful in my life. I graduated college and I have a good job and I’m able to support and take care of myself but at times I feel like something is holding me back. Why am I still dealing with this when this happened so long ago? Confused and Angry! Dallas, TX Dear Confused and Angry, Your story is tragic but unfortunately a common occurrence. I’m so sorry to hear of your hurt, pain, fear and betrayal at such an early age. Sexual abuse is a traumatic experience which causes a great deal of confusion and anger in a person’s life. First of all, I want to say this to you. This is not your fault! Hear me again, this is not your fault! Survivors carry a bucket load of false guilt and shame which belong solely on the abuser, which in your case, was your uncle. No child at any time can provide genuine consent to sexual activity because they are lacking the mental and emotional development to understand the consequences that come along with this act. So, he is held 100% responsible for his shameful and criminal act committed against you. Secondly, not to be believed by primary caretakers is a double betrayal and often feels worse than the actual sexual violation. I regret that your mother and grandmother were not able to provide you the care and protection you needed in order to feel safe. The nightmares, memory blocks, confusion, depression and anger are the after-effects of sexual trauma. Sexual abuse creates an emotional wound in the victim/survivor’s life and will not be healed until it is appropriately addressed. Many times we think we can ignore it and it will go away. We’re only deceiving ourselves with this mentality. The pain will express itself in other areas of our lives: mentally, emotionally, physically, relationally and spiritually. Seek a licensed professional who is trained in working with survivors of sexual violence. Join a sexual abuse recovery group whereby you can learn truth about your experience and be healed.
Gwendolyn Gwendolyn Jones is a spokesperson and advocate for the sexually exploited. Being victimized herself as an adolescent she has walked the path of recovery from victim, to survivor to an overcomer. She began facilitating support groups in 2008 to help survivors of sexual violence heal emotionally and spiritually from the devastating effects of inappropriate sexual behavior.

April is Fair Housing Month: Housing choice is your right Without any television specials or advertising campaigns to remind us, the fact that April is Fair Housing Month can sneak up on you. Promoting awareness of fair housing and educating people on their rights and responsibilities is essential to ensuring that we each have what the Fair Housing Act is there to provide – a choice in where we live. And because it’s Fair Housing Month, April is a good time to highlight the Fair Housing Act and how it can protect you. This is especially important for members of a minority group or anyone whose primary language is not English. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, it is a violation of the Fair Housing Act for an individual to take any of the following actions based on the protected classes of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status or disability: Refuse to rent or sell a home
Refuse to negotiate for a home Make a home unavailable Falsely deny that a home is available for inspection, sale, or lease Persuade an owner to sell or rent to a particular buyer Set different terms, conditions, or privileges for the sale or lease of a home
Although not specifically identified in the Fair Housing Act, anyone who shows, sells, owns, manages, or offers mortgage services for housing properties might consider providing reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities and language assistance for persons with limited English proficiency in keeping with the spirit of the Act. The vast majority of professionals in the housing industry are honest, lawabiding men and women who are well aware of fair housing issues. But it is important to learn and recognize discrimination. Ultimately, knowledge is your best tool to avoiding discrimination. There are multiple facets to the Fair Housing Act and all Texans should be familiar with their rights under the laws of this state and country. But don’t wait until you start your housing search. Fair housing violations — just like Fair Housing Month — can sneak up on you before you know it.
Directing a client toward or away from a specific neighborhood is also a violation of the Fair Housing Act whether intentional or not. Real estate professionals should avoid offering their personal opinion regarding or performing any activity that highlights the racial, religious, or ethnic composition of a given neighborhood or neighborhood school. Consider looking for a real estate professional whose territory covers a broad, diverse area, as opposed to one populated primarily by members of a certain ethnic or religious group.

DICK GREGORY to fast until imprisoned attorney is freed Dick Gregory issued a declaration on the anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., that “I shall refuse all solid food until Lynne Stewart is freed and receives medical treatment in the care of her family and with physicians of her choice without which she will die.” The 73-year-old Stewart, a renowned criminal defense attorney, is suffering from Stage 4 cancer. Gregory, known for his social activism as much as his for comedic wit and political commentary, has taken this step to reinforce the worldwide petition in support of Stewart’s application for compassionate release. Over 6,000 people, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Pete Seeger, have signed to date with the numbers growing by the minute. As a criminal defense lawyer for over 30 years, Lynne Stewart defended the poor, the disadvantaged and those targeted by the police and the State. Such has been her reputation that judges assigned her routinely to act for defendants whom no attorney was willing to represent. One of these was the blind Egyptian cleric Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, who Stewart represented with co-counsels former Attorney General Ramsey Clark and Abdeen Jabara. In 2002, Lynne Stewart was targeted by then-President George Bush and
PAGE 7
!
Attorney General John Ashcroft for providing a vigorous defense of her client. She was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist activity after she exercised both her and her client’s first amendment rights by presenting a press release to a Reuters journalist. In 2006, while the Department of Justice demanded a 30-year sentence, Judge John Koetl, handed down a 28month sentence noting: “By providing a criminal defense to the poor, the disadvantaged and unpopular over three decades, it is no exaggeration to say that Ms. Stewart performed a public service not only to her clients but to the nation.” That sentence, however, was not to stand as the Second Circuit Appellate Court, withdrew Lynne Stewart’s bail — even though her case is still before the courts — and remanded the case back to Judge Koetl with the harsh demand that he revisit his sentence and issue a severely enhanced one. On July 15, 2010, Judge Koeltl increased Stewart’s sentence from 28 months to 10 years imprisonment. This has become a virtual death sentence for Lynne Stewart. As Gregory so eloquently states: “The reason for the prosecution and persecution of Lynne Stewart is evident to us all. It was designed to intimidate the entire legal community so that few would dare to defend political clients
whom the State demonizes and none would provide a vigorous defense. It also was designed to narrow the meaning of our cherished first amendment right to free speech, which the people of this country struggled to have added to the Constitution as the Bill of Rights.” DECLARATION BY DICK GREGORY — APRIL 4, 2013 - I hereby declare on this day commemorating the life and sacrifice of my friend and brother in struggle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that in the spirit of his moral legacy, I demand the immediate release from prison of the legendary lawyer Lynne Stewart, who devoted her entire professional life to the poor, the oppressed and those targeted by the police and a vindictive State. I further declare that from this day forth, I shall refuse all solid food until Lynne Stewart is freed and receives medical treatment in the care of her family and with physicians of her choice without which she will die. There is no time to lose as cancer, which had been in remission, has metastasized since her imprisonment. It has spread to her lymph nodes, her shoulder and appears in her bones and in her lungs. A criminal defense attorney in New York for over 30 years, Lynne Stewart’s unwavering dedication as a selfless advocate was acknowledged by the community as well as judges, prosecutors and the entire legal profession. Such has been her reputation as a fearless lawyer, ready to challenge those in power, that judges assigned her routinely to act for defendants whom no attorney was willing to represent. In 2002, Lynne Stewart was targeted by then-President George Bush and Attorney General John Ashcroft for providing a vigorous defense of her client, the blind Egyptian cleric Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman. She was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist activity after she exercised both her and her client’s first amendment rights by presenting a press release to a Reuters journalist.
!
She did nothing more than other attorneys, such as her co-counsel former Attorney General Ramsey Clark, have done on behalf of their clients. The reason for the prosecution and persecution of Lynne Stewart is evident to us all. It was designed to intimidate the entire legal community so that few would dare to defend political clients whom the State demonizes and none would provide a vigorous defense. It also was designed to narrow the meaning of our cherished first amendment right to free speech, which the people of this country struggled to have added to the Constitution as the Bill of Rights. The prosecution and imprisonment of Lynne Stewart is an ominous threat to the freedom, rights and dignity of each and every American. It is the agenda of a police state. I ask you to join with me to demand freedom for Lynne Stewart. An international campaign has been launched with a petition that supports her application for compassionate release. Under the 1984 Sentencing Act, the Bureau of Prisons can file a motion with the Court to reduce sentences “for extraordinary and compelling reasons.” Life threatening illness is foremost among these and Lynne Stewart meets every rational and humane criterion for compassionate release. Join with me, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Pete Seeger and 6,000 other people of conscience throughout the world who have signed this petition to compel the Warden of the Federal Medical Center, Carswell and the Director of the Bureau of Prisons to act. Act now. There is no time to lose. The petition can be found online at the Justice for Lynne Stewart website: www.lynnestewart.org or at www.change.org/petitions/petition-tofree-lynne-stewart-save-her-life-releaseher-now-2

Ask Gwen Why do so many women falsely accuse men? I was out on a date and the female I was with said I attacked her. She had bruises on her forehead and chin. Just before being stopped by the police, I lost control of my car and ran off the road. Her bruises came from the accident and not from me. I had to serve five years in prison. When I was released I went to a party and instead of going home to my wife, I stopped by a lady’s house I had met a few months prior. She lived two blocks from the location of the party. I fell asleep on her couch. When I opened my eyes, there again were cops all over the place. The lady claimed I raped her. I didn’t. I might be
sent back to prison if I can’t prove I am innocent. What should I do? I think I am going to give up on women. As a result, I want my wife to divorce me. She also doubts my innocence. Robert Dear Robert Let me tell you this: It seems you are constantly getting into trouble because you have chosen the wrong friends. Try to mingle with people who are positive thinkers, people who work for a living, and stop being around people who make no effort to sacrifice for what they desire. You don’t have to commit a crime, but just being with others who commit the crime, you also go up the river. Although, we know the story: Many men and women are incarcerated who did nothing wrong. In reading your letter you stated that a lady accused you of rape. You said you fell asleep and didn’t feel like going home. Therefore, since this lady lived close to where the party was, you chose to go there. Robert, you should have gone home to your wife. Even if you were too impaired to drive yourself, you should have gotten someone to drive you. Men appear to be ‘empty headed.’ They fail to think anything will go wrong. This is a cruel word Robert. Think about it. When a married man goes everywhere except home to his wife, — trouble follows. With this thought in-mind Ray Williams started the U’s Can Too Wealth Builders Association, an organization dedicated to educating and mentoring individuals on how to increase their personal income working from home. U’s Can Too Wealth Builders Association conducts “Up Your Income Workshops” that’s designed to teach individuals proven strategies and methodologies that can be used to easily increase personal income as much as five-thousand dollars monthly. “In today’s technological environment it’s possible for anyone to make money, even if they don’t have any computer skills or money” said Ray.

For example, someone can earn income by just referring customers to business owners by simply handing out postcards or business cards. The Up Your Income Workshops has generated much attention over the past two years and have proven to be affective for those who apply their skills at what they’ve learned in the workshop said Ray. According to Ray, it takes the average individual only about 45-60 days to increase their income after attending one of their basic workshops. Ray said that the workshops are a way to help Americans regain their sense of purpose and contribute to their family financial future, as-well-as the financial future of America. Many individuals are complaining that they don’t have the money or access to the proper resources that’s required in order to enhance their lives. As his way of giving back to the community Ray is giving away 50 tickets to the 2013 Up Your Income Workshop scheduled for April 06, 2013 in Arlington, Texas. To request individual tickets call

Black women urge support of various programs
NY Rep. Yvette Clarke speaks to Black Women's Roundtable during a briefing on Capitol Hill PHOTO CREDIT: Paulette Singleton Washington, DC - Over 300 Black women from 10 states traveled to the US Capitol last week to urge representatives to pass policies and programs that empower Black and underserved families, especially single mothers and the working-poor. Issues the women addressed as they visited the offices of their congressional leaders included: public education, gun violence and the creation of jobs with livable wages. The women met with Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA), Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), and others as part of the second annual Black Women's Roundtable (BWR) Women of Power Summit. The meetings with leaders were followed by a congressional briefing featuring Rep.Yvette Clarke(D-NY), Rep. Gwen Moore (DWI) FCC Commissioner Mign on Clyburn, and others. "It's good to see a filled room," Rep. Clarke said. "We must make sure that our faces are a part of the debate and dialogue. We are known for doing what we have to do to keep it moving. Women owned businesses are creating jobs. They train and employ those who have been shunned by society." Rep. Moore applauded President Obama's signing of an expanded Violence Against Women Act. "Violence against women is a pandemic disease. As Vice President Joe Biden would say, this is a big deal." PAGE 10
!
Melanie L. Campbell, convener of Black Women's Roundtable, addressed the purpose of visits. "As my mentor, Dr. Dorothy I. Height often said, Black women get the job done. We see the problems tearing at the fabric of our community every day so we knew that we needed to kick off our conference up here on Capitol Hill to let our legislators know that we have an agenda and we intend to make sure our voices are heard." President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP), Campbell continued, "I'm looking in the audience at women of power who turned out thousands of people to the polls. Salandra Benton in Florida, Helen Butler in Georgia, Faye Anderson in Pennsylvania, Tracy Sturdivant in Michigan. In 2012 Black women were the highest vote for President Obama and the margin of victory for many right here in the U. S. Congress. We are here to make sure our elected officials know what we want." Many of the participants in the BWR Summit played significant roles in registering and mobilizing more than a million voters in national and local elections since the Unity Voter Empowerment Campaign started over a decade ago. "Our folks in Alabama can't afford to make a mud pie," said Shelia Tyson, convener of Alabama Black Women's Roundtable. "We
came here on a song and a prayer to let these lawmakers know that our people are hurting. They're loosing jobs and homes. We've got hospitals closing. We can't keep watching dissention and lengthy filibusters in DC. Black families need help now or we need to elect new leaders." While the women were visiting lawmakers, the group had a separate youth track touring the Capitol. Carlottia Scott, chief operating officer of NCBCP and former Capitol Hill staffer said, "BWR is focused on mentoring. It is important that we make sure our young people understand our history, the opportunities in leadership, and how to have an impact on public policy." After the Capitol Hill briefing BWR delegates and the youth delegation rushed off to the White House where they received a public policy briefing from Tina Tchen, assistant to President Obama and chief of staff for First Lady Michelle Obama; Latifa Lyles, acting director of the Women's Bureau of the Department of Labor; and Marie C. Johns, deputy administrator, U.S. Small Business Administration. Held at the National Education Association National Headquarters, day two of the summit, Civic Engagement and Global Empowerment Day, allowed the women to come together to map out a strategy based on feedback from meeting !
with Congress and the Administration. The day started with a faith and social justice prayer breakfast headlined by Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook, U.S. Ambassador-At-Large for International Religious Freedom, U. S. State Department. Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee (D-TX) stopped in to bring greetings and Susan L. Taylor, founder and CEO, National CARES Mentoring Movement, was the keynote speaker for the luncheon. Dr. Gail Christopher, W. K. Kellogg Foundation; Elizabeth Powell, American Postal Workers Union; Dr. Lorretta Johnson, American Federation of Teachers; Becky Pringle, National Education Association; Judith BrowneDianis, Advancement Project; Diane Babineaux, International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers; Dr. Judith Moore, Sisters Saving Ourselves Now; Rev. Marcia Dyson, Women's Global Initiative, Dr. Julianne Malveaux, economist; Felicia Davis, UNCF Building Green Initiative; Lori George Billingsley, Coca-Cola Refreshments; and Clayola Brown, A. In our library Health Expert to Release New Book: Blood Pressure Down The 10-Step Program to Lower Your Blood Pressure in 4 Weeks-Without Prescription Drugs Valley Forge, PA - Cardiovascular disease is America’s leading cause of death. Every 39 seconds, we lose another American to a fatal heart attack or stroke, and yet, despite the fact that the largest risk factor for cardiovascular death—high blood pressure —is both reversible and preventable, 78 million adult Americans continue to suffer from this lifethreatening condition, and another two million will be diagnosed over the next year. Perhaps even more alarming, 56 percent of those already diagnosed with this potentially fatal affliction still do not have their blood pressure under control, with many deterred by the frustrating side effects of medications. The good news? Lifestyle changes can be just as effective as prescription drugs in reversing and preventing hypertension. In fact, the government-endorsed Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet was rated the #1 Best Diet Overall by the U.S. News & World Report. In Blood Pressure Down: The 10-Step Plan to Lower Your Blood Pressure in 4 Weeks– Without Prescription Drugs (Three Rivers Press; May 7th,
APRIL 5, 2013
2013), nationally recognized nutrition, health, and fitness expert and Cholesterol Down author Dr. Janet Bond Brill shows how high blood pressure can be lowered and prevented quickly and safely—without the side effects of many blood pressure medications. In ten simple—and delicious—steps, Dr. Janet’s unique plan harnesses the power of lifestyle changes, including elements of the DASH diet, proven to be the most effective medicine for hypertension: blood pressure power foods like bananas, yogurt, soy, and dark chocolate, as well as exercise and stress reduction. Backed by solid research, Brill cuts through the medical jargon to explain how and why each step in her program works. The Blood Pressure Down plan is both thorough and accessible, including many convenient checklists, charts, meal plans, and over 50 delicious heart-healthy recipes that make incorporating each step into a heart-healthy lifestyle easy, practical, and never overwhelming.

WASHINGTON, D.C.--Peace Corps Acting Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet is proud to recognize the top Peace Corps volunteer-producing Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This year, Howard University in Washington, DC, holds the top rank for HBCUs with 21 undergraduate alumni serving as Peace Corps volunteers and 204 alumni having served overseas since 1961. “Historically Black Colleges and Universities equip students with the skills necessary to make a difference overseas through Peace Corps service,” said Acting Director Hessler-Radelet. “Volunteers with diverse backgrounds bring unique cross-cultural experiences to the communities they serve and help promote a greater understanding of all Americans.” After 27 months abroad working in education, health community economic development, environment, youth in development or agriculture, Peace Corps volunteers with four-year degrees are uniquely qualified to return to the United States and enter the global job market. Peace Corps volunteers return from service as global citizens and receive support from the Peace Corps in the form of career services, graduate school opportunities, advantages in federal employment, readjustment allowances, and loan deferment and cancellation opportunities. Howard University graduate Christina Titus of San Diego, Calif., has been living and working in Rwanda since May 2012. Titus feels that the skills she gained as a student at Howard !
APRIL 5, 2013
helped prepare her for Peace Corps service. “It was during my time at Howard that I envisioned myself living abroad. Attending an HBCU opens your eyes to a culture you’d otherwise miss in a traditional school. Professors at HBCUs invest in you. You have fellow students from similar backgrounds cheering you on in what can be an arduous road to graduation. Attending Howard gave me the confidence, courage and capacity to take on such a challenge.” The following are the top three Peace Corps volunteer producing HBCUs: 1. Howard University 21 2. Morehouse College 8 3. Spelman College 5 The Peace Corps works to ensure that its volunteers reflect the extraordinary diversity of America, which has enriched and strengthened our country in countless ways. Peace Corps’ Office of Diversity and National Outreach (ODNO) works to implement tailored outreach strategies for the recruitment of applicants from historically under-represented communities and those with specialized skills. In April 2012, the Peace Corps and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated (AKA) signed a memorandum of understanding to increase the number of service opportunities for Americans from underserved communities. AKA is the oldest historically Black sorority in the nation with more than 260, 000 members. The Peace Corps ranks the top volunteer-producing HBCUs annually. Rankings are calculated based on fiscal year 2012 data as of September 30, 2012 as self-reported by Peace Corps volunteers. Ninety percent of volunteer positions require a bachelor's degree. Americans with backgrounds in agriculture, environment, teaching English as a second language, and other technical or language skills related to Peace Corps assignment areas are encouraged to apply for service one year in advance of their target departure date.

OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN
by Jamille Bradfield
amille Bradfield On a recent visit to Washington, D.C., I had a great time showing our children some of the landmarks in our nation’s capital. Quite naturally, the most-anticipated address of our executive summary tour was 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Yes, the big white house with the manicured lawn. You know the one.
However, it is Mr. Fuqua’s edgy directorial genius that makes this movie what it is…a box office hit.
think it is safe to say, the theatrical release of OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN definitely marks the beginning of 2013’s blockbuster season.
Shot in Louisiana cities, Bossier City and Shreveport on a production budget of $70 million, the film, which has a running time of one hour and 59 minutes, is rated R for strong violence and language throughout. I
Electrifying action! Three and a half reels
Unfortunately, as we walked in the direction of the U.S. President’s residence from a couple of streets over, we were turned away by the men (and women) in blue, and patrol cars and yellow police tape blocked our pathway. When we asked why we could not proceed ahead, we received no explanations. Defeated, we did an about-face and headed back to the minivan, all the while wondering, “What is going on at The White House?” I quietly hoped that everything was okay. Needless to say, whatever prevented us from getting within vacation-scrapbookphoto-op range at the most recognizable home in the world, it was nothing (and we should all pray that it never will be) even remotely close to the action-packed, yet slightly fear-mongering story portrayed in FilmDistrict’s latest film, OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN. When the architect of a terroristic plot, seizes the White House (Secret Service Code: “Olympus”) and kidnaps the President (Eckhart), disgraced former Presidential guard, Mike Banning (Butler) finds himself trapped within the building. As the national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to trust Banning’s insider knowledge to help regain control of the White House, rescue the President and thwart an even greater catastrophe. Directed by one of Hollywood’s hottest directors, Antoine Fuqua (REPLACEMENT KILLERS, SHOOTER, TRAINING DAY), and written by Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN boasts all of the ingredients for a must-see action movie. An all-star cast (Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett, Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott, Ashley Judd and Rick Yune) featuring a protagonist who pulls off a heart-pounding, last-man-standing rescue mission; a well-written script; dynamic cinematography; and skillful editing.
