Show some love I met Shontina Vernon about two decades ago when she was a participant in the Urban Journalism Workshop sponsored by the Cheryl Smith Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Communicators (now Journalists). Shontina, like the other high school students, had aspirations of becoming a journalist and our boot-camp atmosphere was just what was needed to jumpstart her career as she looked toward college. Upon graduation from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Shontina, now “Tina,” went away to Clark Atlanta University pursuing her dreams and learning about the world. After studying theatre arts in Atlanta, she went to the opposite end of the country to attend the University of Washington in Seattle, earning her MFA degree in acting. Now an accomplished playwright and actor, this singer and writer is coming home for a performance at the South Dallas Cultural Center. Please try and catch her one-woman show, “WANTED,” on April 19 and 20 and also get her recently released EP, Flight. Shontina’s performance is one of many at the South Dallas Cultural Center in commemoration of Jazz Appreciation Month. Her theatrical production is described as, “A musical journey across a singer's psyche (as she struggles to get free), WANTED dramatically realizes the power of voice through the performed personal narrative of writer-musician, Tina Vernon.” Even with her busy schedule, she still finds time to write. Just last year she penned a piece for I Messenger, about the popular and controversial movie, The Help. Hopefully we will read more of her works and see more of her performances in the near future. During a recent interview, she talked about her journey and I couldn’t help thinking about how over the years, and after working with hundreds of students, I never forgot this outstanding young lady. She was the epitome of a young and gifted girl child moving into adulthood and she has blossomed into a wonderful woman, breathing life into others through her work.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

A Year Later, Trayvon Martin Tragedy Still Stings

Is there a real party for the people?

By Benjamin Todd Jealous

President Barack Obama has released his 2014 FY Budget and leading up to the big announcement there were several words and phrases that were tossed about, much to the chagrin of many Americans who were clueless. Not only had they never heard some of the words, the ones they were familiar with were not used in any context that was even remotely identifiable. This is unacceptable and can not occur again! In the future, on these pages, you will learn more and more about those buzz words and what they mean. An informed citizenry is the goal. Arming readers with the necessary information so that they can challenge their elected officials, regardless of their party affiliation. First let’s begin with the “Enlightened Electorate” - which is multi-partisan and comprised of the American people, despite their declared party. This is the “party” for the entire country! The goal of the Enlightened Electorate is to gather as much information as possible about the issues impacting the lives of American people. Once that information is gathered, it will be disseminated, examined and explained. No credence will be given to who is backing the proposal or who the sponsor is. Instead the E2 will be focused on the issues and not the individual or party. Whether or not the proposal/bill will be supported rests solely on it’s value -- therefore good things won’t become the casualty of bad politics. So in order for this to work, you have to become an active participant. When you have information, you must share it. Drop us a line here and we will share with the readers. E2 realizes that the issues effecting our country are larger than any one party or any politician’s or citizen’s ego. When the politicians see us working together, like we have common sense, maybe they will also!

One year later, the Trayvon Martin tragedy still stings, and some people are still throwing salt on the open wound. Last week George Zimmerman's brother, Robert Zimmerman, posted a tweet comparing Trayvon Martin to De'Marquis Elkins, 17-year-old black teenager charged with fatally shooting a one-year-old baby.

Other evidence indicates that patrolmen may be encouraged to meet arrest quotas. A tape played at the trial reveals a supervising officer asking for "more 250s" - or more stop-and-frisk forms. One plaintiff, a police officer, testified about the pressure he felt from supervisors - "they were very clear, it's non-negotiable, you're gonna do it, or you're gonna become a Pizza Hut delivery man."

The tweet showed a photo of Elkins side by side with a photo of Martin, both making inappropriate gestures, with the caption, "A picture speaks a thousand words. Any questions?" Zimmerman's follow-up tweet read "Lib[eral] media [should] ask if what these [two] black teens did [to] a [woman and her baby] is the reason [people] think blacks might [be] risky". The implication was that Trayvon Martin's actions on the night he was murdered were equivalent to the killing of an innocent child.

But the fact is that fifty years after enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, racial bias still runs rampant among law enforcement in this country. And Zimmerman's attitude infects an institution much more influential than the Sanford Police Department: the NYPD.

But this belief--that male "black teens" are inherently more likely to be criminals--is ingrained in our society. It has seeped into our institutions in the form of racial profiling, and too often it poisons the judgment of those who are supposed to protect us.

The New York Police Department is currently fighting a class-action lawsuit against their racially biased practice of "stop-and-frisk" policing. Stop-and-frisk allows officers to stop, question and physically search any individual they consider suspicious. In 2011 NYPD officers stopped nearly 800,000 people for alleged "suspicious activity. " Nine out of ten were innocent, 99 percent did not have a gun--and nine out of ten were black or Latino.

Last year I visited Sanford, Fla. in the wake of the Trayvon Martin case. The NAACP hosted a forum where residents could report incidents of police abuse. A number of African American mothers alleged that their teenage sons had been profiled, abused or even assaulted by the police. I found that the attitude of the local police department toward "black teens" was uncomfortably similar to that of Robert Zimmerman.

The most revealing tidbit to come out of the class-action trial is a secretly recorded conversation between a deputy inspector and a police officer. The inspector is discussing a highcrime neighborhood, and he can be heard telling his patrolman: "The problem was, what, male blacks... And I told you at roll call, and I have no problem telling you this, male blacks 14 to 20, 21." In other words: stop more young black boys.

This would be worrisome enough if it were just the opportunistic cry of a family embroiled in racial controversy.

A FAMILY

.

A picture may speak a thousand words, but leaked recordings speak volumes about an institution's priorities. These tapes reveal that the NYPD has effectively placed a bounty on "black teens". By profiling young teens of color, they are using the same grisly logic as Robert Zimmerman. And the result is apparent: in 2011, black and Latino men between the ages of 14 and 24 made up 42 percent of those targeted by stop-and-frisk. That group makes up less than 5 percent of the city's population. The crime attributed to De'Marquis Elkins was truly horrific and despicable. But Elkins does not represent an entire demographic, just like Adam Lanza did not act on behalf of all young white men. Racial profiling punishes innocent individuals for the past actions of those who look and sound like them. It misdirects crucial resources and undercuts the trust needed between law enforcement and the communities they serve. It has no place in our national discourse, and no place in our nation's police departments. Ben Jealous is president/CEO of the NAACP. Ben Wrobel, 202-292-3386, bwrobel@naacpnet.org.

Honda Campus All-Star Challenge: Morgan State wins Back-to-Back Championships Torrance, CA. – After two days of intense competition among 250 students representing 48 competing teams, Morgan State University claimed its second National Championship title in a row at the 24th Annual Honda Campus AllStar Challenge (HCASC), an annual academic event featuring the best and brightest students from the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Enduring a year-long program of study and preparation, the Morgan State University team emerged victorious at the National Championship Tournament held on the Los Angeles-area campus of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., and took home $50,000 in grants for their school. Surviving 10 games against tough competition, Morgan State University clinched the National Championship over second-place finisher Florida A&M University after answering the following question correctly: PAGE 6

!

In 1975 the Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim joined what very large neighbor to its south? Correct Answer: India The Morgan State University team included Craig Cornish (Captain), senior, History Major; Kyle De Jan, senior, History Major; Micheal Osikomaiya, junior, English Major; and James Hayes-Barber, sophomore, Electrical Engineering Major. The fast-paced, suspenseful competition tested the students’ abilities to quickly and accurately answer questions on a broad range of topics including world history, science, literature, religion, art, social sciences, popular culture and African-American history and culture. The top two teams from each of the eight competing divisions advanced to the “Sweet 16,” a single-elimination playoff. The final two teams then battled it out for the national title in a best 2out-of-3 finals. While Morgan State University secured the top prize of $50,000 in

university grants, all 48 schools were awarded grants. Florida A&M University won $25,000, while the remaining “Final 4ʺ″ teams – Oakwood University and West Virginia State University – each received $15,000. The other top eight – Alabama State University, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and North Carolina A&T University – were awarded $9,500 in grants. In total, Honda provided more than !

$300,000 in grants to participating schools. Since 1989, HCASC has brought together the nation’s best and brightest academic competitors from America’s top HBCUs. Throughout its history, HCASC has been the only annual academic competition between the nation’s HBCUs, touching more than 100,000 students and awarding more than $7 million dollars in grants. !

Congresswoman Johnson pictured with Marc Morial, CEO of the National Urban League The National Urban League, one of the country’s premier human rights organizations, recently presented Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson with an award for her outstanding contributions to the education of our nation’s young people. The League recognized Congresswoman Johnson for her commitment to encouraging students to pursue academic study in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, courses referred to as STEM. Recent studies have concluded that America students trail their peers in many other western countries in the pursuit of STEM education. Congresswoman Johnson has become one of the nation’s leading voices to change that situation. “It is an honor to receive this award from the National Urban League,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “The study of the hard sciences is vitally important to the success of our nation. We must do all that we can to ensure that our nation’s students are prepared to become the leaders of the future.”

My fiancée is taking a trip with friends without my permission! My fiancée and I are planning to wed this June. However, I am having second thoughts. This is the problem: I refuse to accept what other married men these days are letting their wives get away with. You see…I strongly believe that a wife’s place is at home taking care of her man. No, I don’t care to go on the trip with her, but she was definitely wrong to plan it without my permission. Gwendolyn, I don’t know what’s up with these women. It seems they have been “empowered” and have lost their minds. Women need to be brought down a peg or two. They are spending out of control. Once upon a time a woman would go barefoot in the summer and

Dear John Have a talk with your fiancée at once, asking her to give you back the engagement ring – that is if you gave her one. Let me tell you this: Your thoughts about women are obsolete. However, there are still some women who put their total attention into their man. Sadly, many of these women are mothers – neglecting their little children to say, “I got a man.” In growing up I used to hear women say half a loaf of bread is better than no bread at all. That I do agree. But how did they relate bread to a man? John, you asked “What’s up with the women?” This is what happened: Years go by so quickly and good health can fail you so quickly, children can grow up and leave so quickly. Married women these days are not letting life pass by. Man, please, that’s why when you ask some women, “What’s up?” They reply — staying single. Other Flavors Prohibited, But Not The One Most Victimizing Youth and Minorities WASHINGTON-- Leading national public health advocates filed a Citizen Petition urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prohibit the use of menthol as a characterizing flavoring in cigarettes. The historic menthol petition was delivered to FDA offices today by the Tobacco Control Legal Consortium on behalf of a long list of cosigning organizations focused on public health in general, and organizations focused on racial and ethnic health outcome disparities in particular. In 2009, Congress passed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. Among other things, the law prohibited the use of fruity and candy-like "characterizing flavors" in cigarettes and cigarette smoke. The flavor prohibition was especially intended to prevent young people from being lured to try —and to become addicted to— a lethal product. While menthol was the one flavor that was exempted from this 2009 prohibition, Congress did give the FDA the authority to prohibit menthol if "appropriate for public health." The law specifically made the issue of menthol in cigarettes a priority for FDA consideration. The FDA has not yet prohibited menthol. Following the filing of this Citizen Petition, the FDA is now required to begin a formal consideration process that could include the gathering of public testimony and will result in a formal FDA ruling on the matter.

Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States, and the petition stresses that smokers who are young and those who are members of racial and ethnic minority groups are disproportionately impacted by the availability of menthol cigarettes. Nearly half (48 percent) of 12- to 17-year old smokers report menthol cigarette use compared to 32% of adults age 26 or older. While 24% of white smokers smoke menthol cigarettes, they are used at much higher rates by racial and ethnic minorities, such as African Americans (83 percent), Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders (53 percent), Hispanics or Latinos (32 percent) and Asian Americans (31 percent). "It's shameful for our government to ban all cigarette flavorings except the one that is deadliest for communities of color and teens," said Dr. Phil Gardiner of the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council. "This is not only a public health issue, but also a social justice issue." A study published in the American Journal of Public health found that 68% of African Americans support prohibiting menthol flavoring in cigarettes. A strong majority of white Americans (56%) also support a prohibition on menthol flavoring. Menthol is a minty flavor that makes cigarettes attractive to many consumers. The flavor itself is popular with many smokers, and it also

produces a cooling sensation that many smokers enjoy, particularly those new to smoking. Tobacco industry marketing of menthol cigarettes has particularly been aimed at African Americans. Menthol cigarettes constitute about onethird of the American cigarette market. "Menthol in cigarettes causes more people to start smoking and makes it harder for them to quit – especially children and African Americans," said Doug Blanke, Executive Director of the Tobacco Control Legal Consortium. "There can be no justification for failing to take menthol cigarettes off the market." One model estimates that if menthol was prohibited as a characterizing flavor in cigarettes, between 2010 and 2020 over 2.2 million would not start smoking. By 2050, the number of people who would not smoke would be 9 million. Author/Motivational Rap Artist Marcus Parker

rules to live by in order to achieve success in life. Parker realized that in today's fitness-craved society, fans receive you best in your rawest form. So, when presented the opportunity to show a little skin to the female fans who have supported him by buying his best-selling book "the product" - he stripped down to his undershirt and declared once and for all that Motivation can be sexy. This comes after a fiveyear hiatus from the public eye, as Marcus spent the last few years of his life battling personal adversity, multiple deaths in his family, as well as legal issues that would have easy consumed the average man

to never strive for success again. Parker, on the other hand, took this opportunity to prove that he was in a league of his own strengthening his mind, body and spirit. And now, he is back to share the fruits of his labor by releasing all his music and books on his new website at www.MarcusParker.com. These products are not the only gift Parker felt he had for his fans, who he felt expected much out of him. The website also shows Parker's life drama in a short video clip. The clip shows Marcus in his lowest moments and the entire story of his rise and fall, which has equipped him with the tools to be

fearless, as he continues to climb and market himself and his "Motivational Rap University". This is how he describes his mission to push Education, Motivation, and Music to a generation in much need of positive entertainment. This mission seems attainable as Marcus returns with a hot new look and a collection of Motivational rap hits and books, which allows everyone in the digital world to receive his message via Kindle players and iTunes. Parker hopes that the decision to drop the suit from his image will open up the idea of motivation as well as life coaching to all.

Constipation By Denice Ford-Gibson

The American diet which is lacking in fiber is the main reason for constipation. The lack of fiber causes the food to remain too long a time in the colon and causes bacteria and toxins to accumulate. The longer food is retained means more water is absorbed, leaving the waste material dry, hard and difficult to evacuate. Under normal conditions the colon produces mucus to protect the intestinal

APRIL 12, 2013

wall, which keeps the material moving at a regular and smooth pace. But with constipation the colon loses its natural mucus when the water is absorbed, and the feces attach themselves directly to the intestinal wall. This builds up over the years with a high fat and white flour diet, which is like putting paste or gluelike substances on the colon walls. This creates chronic diseases, and unless it is eliminated can cause cancer and other life threatening ailments. People who are constipated, and don't eliminate after every meal, could have several days or weeks of waste matter in their colon. Natural Therapy - activate the digestive system with green foods, enzymes and probiotics to help

balance the ph and improve absorption of nutrients from food. Cleanse the whole body - liver, kidneys, blood and colon. Drink at least 64oz of pure room temperature water and avoid eating heavy process foods and carbonated beverages. Disconnect Four and a half stars

Synopsis: A hard-working lawyer, attached to his ce" phone, can't find the time to communicate with his family. A couple is drawn into a dangerous situation when their secrets are exposed online. A widowed ex-cop stru&les to raise a mischievous son who cyber-bu"ies a classmate. An ambitious journalist sees a career-making story in a teen that performs on an adult-only site. They are strangers, neighbors and co"eagues and their stories co"ide in this riveting dramatic thri"er about ordinary people stru&ling to connect in today's wired world. Review: DISCONNECT by Jamille Bradfield I’m sitting at the kitchen table reading text messages and emails from family and friends in the middle of dinner. My kids ask me to put my cell phone away and listen to them. Yes, I’ll admit that I’ve been guilty a time or two of being so attached to the non-stop, 24hour, instantaneous world of PAGE 21

!

communications that has become our norm, that it disrupts human interaction, even with the people I cherish the most.

If ever there was a movie where art imitates life in today’s technology-dependent society, it is DISCONNECT, the new dramatic thriller directed by Oscar-nominated Henry-Alex Rubin (MURDERBALL). This intense film explores the effects of modern technology and its ability to establish, and if we are not careful, systematically destroy, our relationships at home, school, in the workplace and in the community. Although DISCONNECT is centered around our seemingly inseparable connections to our smart phones, tablets and laptops, the formula of interweaving stories of the main characters reminds me of 2004’s CRASH, which also features multiple storylines. Brilliantly written by Andrew Stern, the very plausible DISCONNECT features powerful performances by an ensemble cast starring Jason Bateman, Hope Davis, Paula Patton, Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Nyqyist, Andrea Riseborough, Max Thieriot, Frank Grillo and Colin Ford. Director Rubin definitely makes his mark with DISCONNECT, his fiction feature film debut. He does a phenomenal job of connecting (no pun intended) with the audience using an actions-speaklouder-than words approach. In fact, Rubin does such an incredible job of bringing these real-world issues to life on the big screen, about midway through the movie you will secretly begin to question your own Internet use.

!

Without question, DISCONNECT hooks and then reels you in right from the opening and keeps you engaged throughout the entire rollercoaster ride of captivating action and wide-ranging emotions, all of which commences from the simple touch of a button or stroke of a single computer key. In a nutshell, if you text, email, use social media, participate in chat rooms, make online purchases, allow your children access to technology or frequent the Internet for any reason, (that would be everyone reading this review), watching this movie will either make you completely paranoid about the Internet, which quite frankly I don’t believe was the filmmaker’s intent, or at the very least make you rethink your approach to online access and security settings. It is a must see with an ending that will have you on the edge of your seat. Note to self: change my passwords…regularly! DISCONNECT, rated R (for sexual content, some graphic nudity, language, violence and drug use — some involving teens), has a running time of one hour and 55 minutes. Distributed by LD Distribution, it opens nationwide in theaters on April 12, 2013. Thought-provoking. Intense. The best film I’ve seen so far this year! Four and a half reels
