Early this year thousands of radio listeners learned of the demise of KKDA-AM Cheryl Smith Soul 73 AM and they were not happy. After nearly four decades on the air, the station was no more. If you were listening like me, at midnight the station went silent for a brief second and then you heard a different sound altogether. Yes, the Soul had been sold to Seoul, Korea that is. There were a lot of rumblings. Meetings were held. Tempers were flaring. There was even talk of a boycott of the two remaining stations in the Service Broadcasting group, KKDA-FM 104.5 and Smooth R&B 105.7. On the other side, however, were folks who said that Service Broadcasting was a business and the owner could do whatever he wanted, so get over it. Enter 411 Reality Radio. When I met John Mitchell, over a year ago, he was excited about the future of internet radio and he talked enthusiastically about 411 Reality Radio. With several stations, you had a variety of music and talk to keep you listening. His pitch was simple: “Welcome to the 411 Reality Radio Network! We are your source for groundbreaking national and local music and talk on the web. Whether it’s R&B/Neo Soul/Jazz; HipHop/Rap, Latino/Tejano, Faith Based, Talk or Rock; or if you want to ‘call in and talk about it,’ check us out! We are a community of streaming stations and we are bringing ‘Reality’ back to radio! So now you have the “All New Willis Johnson Good Morning Show” also known as “The Voice,” weekdays 6:00 am to 9:00 am. You can hear Da Crooner Willis Johnson, along with his long-time sidekick Alecia Thompson, actress Tammy Thomas and Mitchell. This is exciting news that I can share because I am still getting the calls from long time listeners. It seems that unfortunately on terrestrial radio (or regular over-the-air broadcasting) no one has seen fit to fill the void left by the station that touted a line up that played the “music you grew up listening to,” with on-air personalities who loved and lived in and for the communities they served. Talk about passionate! John has poured all of his resources into building 411 Reality Radio and the fruits of his labor appears to finally be paying off. Rather than sitting around moaning and groaning, Mr. Mitchell immediately began making things happen. He secured the name Soul73online and started meeting to woo Mr. Johnson and the team over to 411 North Beckley. Talk about an amazing feat! The Willis Johnson Good Morning Show had a huge following. The popular “Da Crooner” letter was the precursor to Steve Harvey’s Strawberry Letter on another station. Of course there were technicalities that had to be ironed out because if you saw Mr. Johnson after his tenure ended at Soul 73 KKDA, he was clearly enjoying being able to sleep past 4 am, for the first time in nearly 40 years. Thankfully he realized how important his voice is. So many benefit from the interviews, the portal for varying expressions and opinions and the many guests who stop by. Now we will really have fun. I am excited about what the future holds for The Voice and 411 Reality Radio. I think we are going to get so much more and the thought is exciting. What you see at work is folks acting like Carter G. Woodson, Ida B. Wells Barnett, Frederick Douglass and Marcus Garvey. This is only the beginning. Support 411 Reality Radio by listening and also with your advertising dollars. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

Feeding the hungry By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

It is egregiously

shameful that in this country of economic and agricultural abundance nearly 50 million citizens and their children go to bed hungry, not having eaten properly during the day nor secured the necessary food nutrients that will keep them well and prevent premature death. In North Texas more than 750,000 people live in circumstances where there is not enough food to feed themselves or their families. Eighteen percent of our state’s citizens live below the poverty line. That number includes one of every four children. Nearly ninety percent of the children who attend Dallas public schools are eligible for the free or reduced lunch programs. The problem has been long-standing. While a member of the Texas legislature I introduced legislation that mandated feeding children from low income families. Hunger and a lack of nutrition have been seminal issues in my life as an elected official. In the fall of this year, a number of non-profit organizations that fight hunger in Texas will participate in the Dallas Hunger Summit that I will host in an effort to address and bring about a resolution to the issue of hunger. I am working with these groups closely for the success of this event. Vitally important organizations such as the Texas Hunger Initiative, the North Texas Food Bank, Good Indeed, Feed3, the Dallas Baptist Association, the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas and Get Healthy Dallas are willing and selfless partners in this crucial effort. The hunger summit will be a collaboration between government, businesses and nonprofit entities to consider ways in which we can reduce the suffering caused by hunger in Texas and throughout our nation.

HUD ANNOUNCES MAJOR RESTRUCTURE DALLAS AND LUBBOCK FIELD OFFICES TWO OF 16 TO CLOSE NATIONWIDE Realignment to Streamline and Modernize the Department FORT WORTH – Mark Brezina, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Acting Regional Administrator, announced the agency’s small offices in Dallas and Lubbock will close as part of a realignment of staff resources to better support program delivery. Nationwide, HUD plans to close 16 of its 80 field offices, affecting approximately 120 employees. It is anticipated the offices will be closed by early fiscal year 2014. The move will result in meaningful administrative savings, anywhere from $110 to $150 million in lease and operating costs over a 10 year period. “The closure plan provides for optimal use of HUD's

human capital, better results for HUD customers, and greater efficiencies for American taxpayers,” said Brezina. "Like families and businesses across the country, we cannot continue to operate like we did several decades ago. America has changed, communities have changed and we must change." “We looked at where our staff needs to be in order to make certain we can achieve the greatest possible impact on the people and places we serve,” said Pat Hoban-Moore, HUD’s Assistant Deputy Secretary for Field Policy and Management. We will implement this realignment without disrupting the program delivery networks currently serving communities throughout the nation.”

Celebrating our heritage! 365 days !

HUD staff in Fort Worth will work with HUD clients serviced by the two closing offices to ensure uninterrupted, quality service going forward. HUD will retain large offices in Houston and San Antonio, as well as the Fort Worth Regional Office.

“While these restructuring actions are personally difficult because of the impact on a very limited number of employees, they are necessary to improve execution and to the long term health of the Department,” explained Brezina. “We are realigning HUD to deliver the best value to customers and taxpayers.”

Pray for the survivors and families in Boston and West, Texas

Hunger is an economic issue as well. Employees who have not eaten sufficiently are not able to perform well at their places of employment. Hungry children do not do well academically in school. Studies have proven that well-fed children have higher test scores than those who are confronted with not having sufficient food to eat. There is even a relationship between aberrant behavior and inadequate food. The coming together of these various organizations is a necessary step in our battle against hunger. Collectively we will be able to do so much more to confront the problem which presents itself as a moral dilemma for our state and our nation.

Ask Gwen

My mother doesn’t want me to marry my choice Dear Gwendolyn: I have been engaged on and off for over ten years to a beautiful lady. Earlier in our relationship I didn’t marry her because her four children didn’t respect me. Their father had told them I was not their father and they didn’t have to listen to me.

Their mother did not object to his commands. Therefore, my mother felt I should postpone the marriage. I listened to my mother and canceled all wedding plans. We broke up. Five years later we saw each other at a shopping mall. Her boys are now in their late teens. We admitted to still being in love with each other. My mother thinks her children will remember their father’s teachings. Mother says, “You won’t be happy.” Rob Dear Rob Listen to your mother again. She is right. Do not make wedding plans. In fact, dissolve the renewed courtship before it gets started. Seek someone new. You have heard the saying, “Leftover soup rewarmed does not – taste as good.” "Ask Gwendolyn Baines" advice column is distributed by the National Newspaper Publishers' Association (NNPA)-Washington, D.C.

GROUNDBREAKING STUDY REVEALS IMPACT OF RACE AND GENDER ON WELL-EDUCATED AFRICAN-AMERICAN EXPECTANT MOTHERS Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) -- While many medical researchers and social theorists have most often focused on the plight of underclass black women, three notable researchers have turned their attention to the impact of racial and gender stressors on African-American expectant mothers who present the image of the "American dream" by virtue of their educational, professional and economic attainment. The results of this pioneering, three-year study, "Contextualized Stress, Global Stress, and Depression in Well-Educated, Pregnant, African-American Women," published by Fleda Mask Jackson, Ph.D., Diane L. Rowley, M.D., M.P.H., and Tracy Curry Owens, Ph.D., reveal that the shroud of blackness and the mantle of gender are no less impactful on the psyche of middle- and upperclass African-American women, despite the prestige and security associated with university degrees, corner offices and money in the bank. The findings suggest that well-educated, pregnant, AfricanAmerican women are as disproportionately at risk for adverse birth outcomes as their less fortunate "sisters," and that the depression linked to their stress has been established as a significant contributor to poor birth outcomes. The research was supported by generous funding from the Ford Foundation and W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The 101 women who collaborated in the study were recruited from private practice obgyn offices and categorized on the basis of the demographic variables of relationship status, the presence of other children and annual household income. Age was divided into two categories: 20 to 29 and 30 years and older. Education categories included non-college educated (having no college degree) and college-educated (having graduated from a 4-year college). Relationship variables were separated by partner status: married, partnered and nonpartnered. Participants also indicated if they had other children under 18 years of age, or no PAGE 9

!

children. Employment variables were divided into currently employed (full- or part-time job), or unemployed. Lastly, annual household income was divided into three categories: $10,000 to $30,000, $31,000 to $50,000, and above $51,000. The majority of the subjects were college educated, employed, and married or partnered. A crosssectional study was then conducted utilizing the Jackson, Hogue, Phillips Contextualized Stress Measure (JHP), a measurement of racial and gendered stress, and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), an assessment of global stress, to detect their associations and predictions for depression as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II). The results indicated that 35% of the women had high levels of contextualized stress, 40% reported high levels of global stress, and 23% were deemed to be depressed. Race and gender matter in the lives of African-American women. Their significance provides the context for how these women experience stress in the places where they live, work, and go about their daily lives. This study further demonstrates the level to which these experiences are inextricably linked to race, gender, and class inequities. While expectant mothers of all persuasions are driven to contemplate the role of parenting, pregnant AfricanAmerican women also bear the additional and horrendous burden of considering the world into which their children will be born - a world that offers little black and brown babies fewer opportunities for growth and development and greater opportunities to confront the evils of prejudice, bigotry, discrimination and racial profiling.

uninsured. The link between the stress experienced by African American women and depression has implications for postpartum depression and depression across the life course. What is most important about this newest research is that its findings issue a clarion call to health care professionals and local communities about the importance of being responsive to the unique individual and environmental-level stressors that jeopardize the health of an entire community - the expectant mothers, unborn babies, and families of all AfricanAmerican women, regardless of their educational, professional, social or economic standing. Scholar, educator and activist, Fleda Mask Jackson, Ph.D., is president and CEO of the national research firm and think tank MAJAICA, LLC, and the leader and creator of Save 100 Babies, a cross-sector network devoted to a social determinants approach to eliminate racial disparities in birth outcomes. Dr. Jackson currently serves as a senior fellow at the National Center for Health Behavioral Change, Urban Medial Institute, Morgan State University. Her most recent affiliations also include professorships at the Rollins School of Public Health and the Women's Studies Program, Emory University. A highly regarded lecturer and guest speaker, Dr. Jackson is an alumna of Spelman College with an M.S. in human development and family ecology from the University

of Illinois, where she published her thesis on "Socialization Practices Related to Racial Identity Among Black Middle-Class Mothers," and her doctoral dissertation, "The Role of The Black Church in the Socialization and Education of Black Children." With academic preparation in education, psychology, and anthropology, Dr. Jackson has been working with public health departments, private physicians and social agencies across the country to bring attention to the importance of addressing stress and depression in the ways they are experienced by African-American women and toward developing remedies for closing the racial gap in birth outcomes. Dr. Jackson has served as a consultant and advisor for a wide range of organizations that include the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies; Center for Excellence in Women's Health, Harvard University Medical School; Ford Foundation (SisterSong); Rhea and Lawton Chiles Center for Healthy Mothers and Babies, University of South Florida; and Children's Defense Fund. Dr. Jackson currently serves as a member of the National Advisory Committee on Health Disparities for the director of the Centers for Disease Control, and recently has been approved by the White House and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to serve on the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality.

The evidence appears to be indisputable ! that AfricanAmerican women from all socioeconomic backgrounds experience higher rates of poor pregnancy outcomes, preterm births, small-for-gestational- age babies, and infant mortality than women from other racial and ethnic groups who are less educated, unemployed, and !

Rep. Barton and colleagues invite gun manufacturers to relocate to Texas WASHINGTON: Rep. Joe Barton (R-Ennis/Arlington), joined by11 members of the Texas Congressional Delegation, sent a letter Tuesday to three gun manufacturers urging them to consider relocating their firearms manufacturing facilities to Texas. The members drafted the letter after a Connecticut-based rifle manufacturer, PTR-Precision Technologies Inc., announced its intentions to move 40 jobs out of the state due to “unintended consequences” of Connecticut’s newlypassed gun control legislation. The letter promotes Texas’ support of the Second Amendment and the Lone Star State’s business friendly environment. “In Texas, we are committed to protecting our right under the constitution to own and use guns…The business-friendly environment in Texas prompted CEO Magazine to name Texas the best state in the nation for doing business, eight years in a row. Texas lawmakers have paved the way for business through reasonable regulations, low taxes, a skilled workforce, cuttingedge infrastructure and the advantage of being a right to work state,” the letter states. The letter ends with a friendly invitation, “We encourage you to relocate to Texas, where we can provide a business-friendly environment that encourages innovation and understands the right to bear arms. We look forward to calling y’all Texans!” Along with Rep. Barton, the letter was also signed by Reps. John Carter (TX-31), Mike Conaway (TX-11), Blake Farenthold (TX-27), Ralph Hall (TX-4), Sam Johnson (TX-3), Randy Neugebauer (TX-19), Pete Sessions (TX-32), Lamar Smith (TX-21), Steve Stockman (TX-36), Randy Weber (TX-14) and Roger Williams (TX-25). The letter was sent to PTR-Precision Technologies Inc. located in Enfield, Connecticut, The Marlin Firearms Company located in North Haven, Connecticut, and The Mossberg Corporation, also in located in North Haven, Connecticut.

Congressmen Cuellar and McCaul introduce bill to improve Federal Government Customer Service WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressmen Henry Cuellar (D-TX-28) and Michael McCaul (R-TX-10) announced the introduction of the Government Customer Service Improvement Act of 2013. The bipartisan legislation works to improve PAGE 10

!

customer service delivery across federal agencies, and a companion bill was introduced by U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) and Ron Johnson (RWI). Millions of Americans depend on federal agencies for vital services, and delays in processing those requests often result in inconvenience, frustration and financial hardship. Passage of this legislation will make the federal agency customer service process both more transparent and efficient and will focus limited resources on improving frontline customer service functions. “Millions of American families encounter the federal government on a daily basis. They deserve first class customer service. When trying to navigate the bureaucracy and cut through the red tape, it is the job of our federal agencies to provide helpful answers in a professional and timely manner. This bill puts the taxpayer first,” said Congressman Cuellar, Member of the House Appropriations Committee. “Too often we hear that Americans’ are frustrated with government service. It is our responsibility to act when we hear that students are having difficulty with federal student loans or when seniors experience a delay in their retirement benefits. Every taxpayer, every day will benefit from this legislation.” “The federal government is an oversized, intimidating bureaucracy that is too often difficult to navigate,” said Congressman McCaul, Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee. “Whether it's a veteran in need of care or a business with a tax dispute, the least we can do is ensure that each federal agency is responsive to the taxpayers who fund it.” “Citizens should expect federal agencies to deliver customer services at least as well as the private sector does, but this often is not the case,” Senator Warner said. “Many of our military veterans still wait too long for critical medical services and benefits, and I’ve heard from Virginians waiting over 400 days for their full retirement benefits from the federal government. That simply is not acceptable.” “For companies operating in the private sector, bad customer service means reduced profits and the risk of failure,” said Senator Johnson. “While federal agencies don’t face that pressure, this bipartisan measure requires the development of customer service standards and performance measures at each agency. This is a common sense approach to help make government operations more responsive.” The measure requires the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to set government-wide customer service standards to improve response times for citizen requests and government services. It holds the Chief Performance Officer at each agency responsible for improving customer service and it would also establish a specialized team to assist those agencies which consistently fail to meet customer service standards. In addition, the Government Customer Service Improvement Act of 2013 sets specific service improvement targets for the Office of Personnel Management, an

agency which has experienced chronic backlogs in processing retirement benefits for federal employees. As of March 2013, OPM still has a backlog of more than 36,000 claims.

Senate Committee unanimously approves Sen. Wendy Davis Victims' Rights Bills for Rape Survivors

AUSTIN – A key bill written by State Senator Wendy Davis that assists victims of sexual assault and helps obtain the evidence needed to find and convict rapists was approved unanimously by the Texas Senate earlier today. Davis’ Senate Bill 1191 (House Bill 2560, by Rep. Senfronia Thompson) would allow virtually every Texas hospital to obtain critical forensic evidence needed to apprehend and convince sexual predators. Currently, rape victims must often travel many miles and spend hours trying to find a hospital capable of obtaining the necessary forensic evidence. Too often, the trauma of sexual assault is compounded by the inability to conduct the testing and !

evidence collection needed to find and prosecute the rapist. Under Davis’ bill, an assault survivor will not be turned away. "This is victory for care, compassion and smart law enforcement. Just yesterday, we heard the horror story of how one rape victim was forced to drive around for five hours searching for a hospitals that could provide her care and collect the evidence necessary to convict her assailant," said Davis. Last fall, the Dallas Morning News reported that only two of Dallas County's 46 hospitals offer effective, forensic rape exams. In 2011, rape victim Nicole Anderson was forced to travel 50 miles over five hours, going to three hospitals before receiving the care she needed. As a result, investigators were not able to collect critical evidence related to her rape. "I wrote this bill to help victims of sexual assault and to find options to preserve evidence after these horrible crimes are committed," said Davis. "I'm so proud of Nicole Anderson for her courage to testify. It is so important that we continue to support sexual assault survivors and help to bring justice to the perpetrators of these crimes." Davis Victims' Rights Fact Sheet · Sen. Wendy Davis is also sponsoring legislation with Rep. Thompson (Senate Bill 1192/House Bill 2559) to empower survivors of sexual assault to be more involved and knowledgeable about the status of the

sexual assault evidence collected from them and the status of an ongoing investigation. The bill provides that victims of sexual assault may request information regarding any evidence collected during the investigation as well as the status of the analysis. That legislation is slated for a vote by the full Senate. · In 2011, Sen. Davis passed SB 1636, legislation to address the more than 23,000 untested rape kits on backlog statewide. In February, she joined Sen. Bob Deuell (R) in requesting funding to aid local law enforcement in testing the their rape evidence. Both the House and Senate have approved $10.8 million for the Department of Public Safety's the 2014-2015 budget to help clear the backlog. · Last month, Davis received the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault's Champion for Social Change Award for her work on behalf of victims of sexual assault and violent crime.

Lancaster ISD hosts 4th Annual Special Olympics Track Meet in the Best Southwest High-fives, hugs, smiles and cheers permeated the Beverly D. Humphrey Tiger Stadium as Lancaster ISD hosted its 4th Annual Special Olympics Track Meet in April. The event featured 287 students with special needs from neighboring schools including Waxahachie, Cedar Hill and Grand Prairie Independent School Districts competing alongside their peers all vying to be champions. Ruby Batiste, director of the Lancaster ISD Special Education Department, shared the impact of this event. “Watching the participants compete with confidence is life-changing. The students compete with passion and resiliency,” Batiste said. “What we perceive as their disability is no longer a factor in them becoming an accomplished athlete. Students from multiple grade levels and abilities participated in track race relay competitions throughout the day as teachers, family members, friends and other students cheered them to the finish line. The Mayor of Lancaster, the Honorable Marcus E. Knight, and Lancaster ISD Executive Director of Accountability, Dr. Lamont Smith officially opened the Olympic Games after the ceremonial running of the torch, infamous Lancaster High School Tiger March Band drum line and the parade of champions.

This event is a point of pride for Lancaster ISD and was the brainchild of Eddie Bratton, Lancaster ISD Special Olympics event coordinator, Physical Education and Adaptive Play Coach. “Our journey has been a very interesting and tremendous experience,” he said. “ In 2010, our goal was just to collectively bring the community, Lancaster ISD staff and students together in their First Special Olympics. We did not know the impact that it would have on those that attended.” After the first year, momentum continued to grow and has blossomed into the area-rich event that encompasses as many neighboring districts as it can handle. Bratton continued, “We were not only able to accomplish the goals of bringing those parties together; but we excelled in allowing our students as well as surrounding districts to have an incredible experience as student athletes. Batiste agrees that this event has tremendous value and purpose. “The most valuable component of the event is students with disabilities are given the opportunity to feel valued and relevant. They are given the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of their peers and family in an environment where they

National syndication of “Conversations With Ed Gordon” announced Original quarterly special will feature oneon-one celebrity interviews; Gordon talks with Kevin Hart, Whoopi Goldberg & KEM

NEW YORK, NY – Ed Gordon Media recently announced the syndication of Conversations with

Ed Gordon, a quarterly, one hour special with award-winning journalist and renowned interviewer, Ed Gordon, serving as host and executive producer. The specials will be aired nationally, including on all ten NBC owned and operated affiliates. The first special begins airing April 28, 2013. Specific airdates, times and markets can be found on http:// www.edgordon.net/conversations.htm. Gordon, known for in-depth and exclusive interviews, will do it again with a stellar line-up of guests for the

first special. Comedian Kevin Hart, one of today’s hottest entertainers, talks with Gordon on location in Los Angeles about his record-breaking concert tour and hit television show. Hart also confronts recent criticism surrounding a controversial “color” joke. Kevin Hart on why he doesn’t address media/social network criticism: “They want to make something out of nothing. So if you give ammunition, which is a reply, an excuse or a constant apology, you’re setting yourself up for more comments.” On wanting to be on the list of the greatest comedians of all-time: “As long as my name is in there, I don’t care if it’s dead last, as long as I am in there. That means people understood my work ethic and understood that I love to do what I am doing now… making people laugh and that’s it.” Also featured on

the program, Academy Awardwinning actress, comedienne and television host, Whoopi Goldberg. Goldberg talks about her iconic career, her desire to be a United States Ambassador and black America’s love/hate relationship with her controversial image. Comments: Whoopi Goldberg on critics who accuse her of trying to be “white”: Goldberg: “It’s not like you wake up and you’re Italian, and then you turn black. You’re always PAGE 15

black. I’ve always been black and I always knew it!” On those who didn’t know what to make of her look: “People didn’t want me to be the representation of the black woman. I somehow didn’t serve some kind of purpose. But, what I have is longevity, which trumps everything else. I never promised I was going to be hot looking.” R&B sensation KEM rounds out the first special. Gordon and KEM go back to the Salvation Army in Detroit where the two-time Grammy-nominee and Billboard Award winning artist found sobriety and started his climb out of drug abuse and homelessness to the top of the R & B and jazz charts. Comments: Did music save KEM’s life? “In a sense that would be true. In the darkest periods of my life music was a light for me. It was a focal point. It was something to reach for, something to live for.” What KEM’s music means to his fans: “The reception that my music is given by people is what I hoped it would be. I don’t want to create music that just entertains people. I want to be a part of the soundtrack of their lives.” Gordon is thrilled about the special and the line up of guests. “Kevin is the hottest thing in show business right now. What can you say about Whoopi? She’s a real legend in the business and

KEM’s story about overcoming life’s troubles, including sexual abuse, is one of the best I’ve ever heard,” Gordon says. “Most of all, I appreciate that all three were very open and honest with some very personal issues.” Upcoming specials will include

newsmakers and celebrities from the world of entertainment, sports and politics. If people are in the headlines they'll be right here.Conversations with Ed Gordon is produced by Ed Gordon Media. For more information about the program and Ed Gordon Media, visit www.edgordon.net !

The agreement between The Bayou Classic and NBC Sports Group extends the national broadcast on NBC through the 2015 contest. NBC Sports Group has been the home of The Bayou Classic since 1991. Last year, the nationally-televised edition of the 39 th Annual Bayou Classic saw a 19% rating increase. In addition to the national broadcast, the contest will also be available on-demand at Hulu.com and NBC Sports Network will work with the 12 regional sports networks to re-air the game allowing The Bayou Classic to reach 50 million+ homes. “The landscape of television sports is changing and it is important to us that The Bayou Classic continue to be an integral part of that landscape,” said Dottie Belletto, President of New Orleans Convention Companies, Inc., the management firm of The 40th Annual Bayou Classic. “This match of two HBCUs represents an important tradition within the community that we hope to continue for many years to come, and thanks to NBC Sports Group, we’ll be able to see that come to fruition for an additional two years.” The Bayou Classic was represented in contract talks by Jeffrey Cokin, President of Cokin Communications, who negotiated the deal with NBC Sports Group. “The insights and experience of Jeffrey Cokin have been key to achieving this new contract with NBC Sports Group,” added

Belletto. “The Thanksgiving weekend, national time slot on NBC is important to building the tradition of our game and the Bayou Classic brand.” The Bayou Classic ( www.mybayouclassic.com ) features one of America’s greatest college sports rivalries, bringing the fans and alumni of Southern University and Grambling State University to New Orleans for a celebration of football, family and the traditions and pageantry surrounding Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Proceeds from the annual series of Bayou Classic events provide support to the campuses’ athletic programs and fund scholarships through the SU System Foundation and the GSU Foundation. The Bayou Classic was supported last year by the following organizations for the 39 th annual series of events – State Farm, MillerCoors, US Marine Corps, Toyota, Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board, The Home Depot®, The CocaCola Company, New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation (NOTMC), New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau, McDonalds, Cox Louisiana, Louisiana>AIDS (Louisiana Greater Than AIDS), The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, The Louisiana Campaign for TobaccoFree Living, the French Market Corporation, Entergy, Visit Baton Rouge, Jacobs Engineering, State of Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism, L’Auberge Baton Rouge, Crystal Hot Sauce, CH2MHILL, The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc., the Downtown Development District and 100 Black Men of Atlanta.
