Dallas Alumnae shows why sororities are needed Congratulations Annya, Pajhe and Robbie Over the years, I have heard numerous questions about the validity and value of things that I hold near and dear, like Black colleges, black businesses, and sororities and fraternities, to name a few. Sadly folks still don‘t get it. Many see nothing wrong with constantly being in rooms discussing issues with a huge segment of the population excluded. Diversity, Unity, togetherness Cheryl Smith mean nothing to those who consider themselves privileged. If I were a violent person, I would say slug the next person who says, “I don’t see color,” unless that person is Stevie Wonder or another sight-impaired person. I want you to see and appreciate my color and differences as we explore one another’s similarities! And that is indeed what I found in pledging a sorority -- instead of losing myself in a sea of women, out of a sea of women I emerged, more confident, loving, intelligent, spiritually grounded and focused. It was just 35 years ago and the countdown was on. I was a mere pyramid, a pledgee of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on the campus of Florida A&M University. I had just a little over four more weeks of pledging to go and I was learning a lot about the organization, the members, my fellow pyramid sisters and, most importantly, myself. I’ve never regretted writing that letter of interest, attending that interview and making those so important steps toward “Delta Land.” Once initiated I immediately became part of a sisterhood, founded on Christian principles and boasting an impressive membership that expands the globe. It’s funny. With sorority sisters, no matter how long you go without talking, you’re like family. You still have a bond that transcends time, distance and yes, sometimes disagreements. As a member, I have a network that has greeted me in the Motherland, put me in contact with sorority sisters in Japan and enjoyed the hospitality of one in a quaint city in a remote area of Texas. Who could begrudge such an existence? Wherever I am and I meet a Delta, I am not meeting a stranger. As the organization celebrates it centennial this year, I still stop from time and pause to reflect on the 22 young women who wanted to make a difference in the world, and they did. Those women dealt with considerably more challenges than I have today so I refuse to abdicate the responsibility that came to me when I took that oath in May of 1978. This past weekend I was with my sorority sisters at our annual Jabberwock Pageant. On these pages I have shared information about Annya’s quest to become Miss Jabberwock and the time was finally here. Annya was joined by two other contestants: Robbie Zhane Banks and Pajhe Danielle Jordan. These young ladies were absolutely beautiful! They were cheering one another on and they bonded like sisters. I don’t think the girls really cared about winning. They were just enjoying the ride -- and that’s what life is supposed to be about, the journey. With the help of the Committee Chair Shaunetta Heiskell and Co-Chair Leslie Swann; along with a dynamic committee, pulled together a wonderful program that definitely enriched the lives of everyone involved. This was especially life-changing for Annya. I watched her blossom and mature. It was heartwarming to not only see the changes in her but to experience the love from so many Deltas and friends who showed their support. It was great to see the village at work, whether it was fixing the hair or makeup, donating money, buying ads, snapping pictures, sharing tips for securing dresses and other accessories, loaning gloves or just calling to say, “you go girl!” Ever since she was a little girl, Annya has been surrounded by members of Delta Sigma Theta. She has more aunts than she could have ever imagined and many watched proudly as she was crowned 2013 Miss Jabberwock for the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She joins the ranks of thousands of young ladies who have received this honor since 1925 when the first Jabberwock was presented in Boston, MA. For the Dallas Alumnae Chapter, Annya Christina Smith joins John Ella Goode, April Denise Tanksley, Carla Eushon Dillard, Gadget LaShon Bullard, Fredricka Ann Larty, Cokiesha Lashon Bailey, Cheryl Yvette Goode, Hope Nicole Howard, Savannah Stephens, Ashley Janise Gaines, April Danielle pSignet, Erica Shanest Glenn, Britani Danielle Johnson, Chandler Elise Stephens, Kari Deanne Malone, Callie Christina Cantrelle, Da’Brana Denise Foster, Chrystal Cantrelle, Abeni Jewel Haynes and Taylor Lauren Ratcliff. She and the other young ladies also got much-needed scholarship dollars which she will need to get her to Florida A&M University. Our children deserve to have programs and opportunities -- such as the ones provided by so many great sororities and fraternities, as well as other social, civic and community based organizations. If folks out there want to start more organizations, there’s plenty of work to do. In the words of Bishop T.D. Jakes, who so eloquently silenced critics of megachurches, “There are plenty of souls to save!” There is so much work out there to do, to save our young girls and boys. If anyone wants to criticize, they should instead use their efforts and get to saving!

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...
e Eloquent and Elegant Michelle Obama By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
Our nation is fortunate to have Mrs. Michelle Obama, who visited Dallas this week to help celebrate the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Library, as its First Lady. She is gracious, charming and centrally involved in the life of our country. Mrs. Obama’s many contributions have not gone without notice. The mother of two young daughters, she has launched initiatives designed to help young people. Three years ago she decided to address the problem of childhood obesity by starting a program entitled “Let’s Move.” It has promoted healthier lifestyles for children and the placement of more nutritious foods in their schools and homes. The program includes parents, teachers, school nurses and medical professionals. In 2011 the First Lady united with Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of the vice president, to create Joining Forces, a program that assists military families in the areas of health, employment and education. Clearly, Mrs. Obama is someone who sees beyond herself to the needs of average Americans, Mostly recently Mrs. Obama has reached out to the families of victims of gun violence. She attended the funeral of a young high school student who was senselessly killed on the streets of Chicago. She has passionately advocated the need for federal and state gun policies that protect our citizens. While she attended two Ivy League schools, there were no special privileges or economic abundance in the home where Mrs. Obama and her brother were raised on the south side of Chicago. While a high school student, her commute to and from school lasted three hours. An honor roll student, she was graduated as the class salutatorian. Our First Lady has a capacity to reach all types of people. Whether speaking to an audience of Hollywood celebrities or a gathering of bereaved relatives, her grace allows her to meet people where they find themselves. She often says that she is foremost the mother of her daughters, Sasha and Malia. When asked to describe the relationship with her husband she says that it is built on trust and understanding. The life of a president can be lonely and difficult, yet I am certain that having Mrs. Obama as his spouse soothes the difficulties that President Obama endures. At dinner, she says, they talk about the experiences of their children, and things that make them happy. Able to relate to people of most political persuasions, Mrs. Obama is a gift to our nation. Men and women the world over follow her every move, knowing that she is walking in a direction that they admire.
Protecting our children Session Watch By Sen. Carlos Uresti
With children's lives at stake, the pressure imposed by heavy workloads at Child Protective Services is pushing many caseworkers out the door. The Legislature must use the time remaining in the 83rd session to help this agency keep caring people on the job. Every day, child abuse investigators have to deal with disturbing and heart-wrenching situations that most people never encounter. Their decisions can mean life or death for a child at risk, and that's not something to put away in a desk drawer when they go home at night. Other caseworkers — in family-based services, conservatorship programs, foster and adoption programs, child-care licensing specialists and inspectors — also make a difference every day in the lives of Texas children. It's not a job they do for the money, and in fact, it takes a toll. Just how challenging are these jobs? Last year 34
percent of all child abuse investigators in Texas resigned, and the turnover rate among other caseworkers was 26.1 percent. According to the CPS Data Book for fiscal 2012, only 45.1 percent of all caseworkers have been on the job for three years or more, while almost 30 percent have been at the job for less than a year. CPS workers are relatively young, with an average age of 36, and the entry-level salary is less than $37,000 a year. In February, the commissioner of the Department of Family and Protective Services, former San Antonio Judge John Specia, told a legislative hearing that child abuse investigators are overwhelmed and under paid, and he asked for help. “It’s real hard to run a railroad with 37 percent turnover,” Specia told the Dallas Morning News, referring to the number of rookie investigators who departed the job last year. Although these workers care about what they're doing, he said, you can't pay them enough to stay if "they’ve got
just a completely unreasonable workload." The Legislature is trying to respond to his plea. While the final budget for 2014-15 is still being worked out, Senate Bill 1 as it currently stands provides just over $2.5 billion in all funds for CPS, an increase of more than 10 percent over the current budget. This amount includes about $105 million for Prevention and Early Intervention programs — a substantial increase over the current budget, but still not enough to really get serious about prevention. More money will help, but that alone won't relieve the stress caused by heavy caseloads. We can do more, and that's why I am sponsoring bills that would limit the caseloads of investigators and other CPS caseworkers, and enhance training for CPS supervisors. I'm also seeking to create a task force to examine hiring and management practices at the agency. Specia is working hard to stem the flight of caseworkers from CPS and create a workplace environment that will encourage good, caring people to stay on the job. The Legislature must continue to help him.

My sister sexually abused me! ASK THE ADVOCATE
Gwendolyn Jones Dear Advocate,
I’m embarrassed to write my story but I can’t continue on living a lie. When I was five years old my older sister sexually abused me. She was 20 at the time. Today, I am 23 years old, and it still affects my life. The abuse ruined my childhood and caused a great deal of pain. I have forgiven my abuser and that has helped with the healing process. However, my contact with her is
limited. At times I feel healed, and then the pain comes back to me. One thing I have learned is that when I have children I will make sure they are never put in a situation where they could be abused. Embarrassed! Dear Embarrassed, Unfortunately, sexual abuse is rarely committed by a stranger. 90% of reported incidents the victim knew their attacker. i.e., parent, family member, friend or acquaintance. While the majority of sexual abuse is committed by males, females also commit sexual abuse against the opposite gender or the same gender as in your tragic story. Anyone can commit the crime of sexual abuse against a child. My heart grieves for your loss of innocence, the loss of a healthy relationship with your sister, safety and security from someone you should have been able to trust but who was untrustworthy. Nothing you did or said warranted this behavior. Survivors of sexual abuse tend to believe they are responsible and that somehow they should have
stopped it. As a result they end up carrying a heavy load of false guilt that only belongs to the abuser. Your sister chose to commit a criminal and immoral act against you and as a result you were negatively impacted. Sexual abuse always leaves a negative impact on its victims. In closing, recovery is needed so you can connect with the buried painful emotions of the past, learn the truth about your experience, process the feelings and then release them. When you have worked through the anger, pain, humiliation and hurt, you will be able to emotionally let go of the past and you don’t have to worry about the pain coming back. The past can just be that----the past! An event that happened to you but it doesn’t have to define your present or your future. Gwendolyn Gwendolyn Jones is a spokesperson and advocate for the sexually exploited. Being victimized herself as an adolescent she has walked the path of recovery from victim, to survivor to an overcomer. She began facilitating support groups in 2008 to help survivors of sexual violence heal emotionally and spiritually from the devastating effects of inappropriate sexual behavior. Contact Gwendolyn on facebook or email asktheadvocate@yahoo.com.
A mighty soldier takes her sleep By Jonathan Frederick Douglass The first woman of color to serve as an officer in the United States Army as a nurse has given her final salute. Mary Elinor Walton recently passed at the Dallas Veterans Cancer Center. She was 93 years old. “My interest in health care began when I was around eight years old,” Mrs. Walton, who was a lieutenant in the military, said once during an interview. “I used to pull stickers from the feet of my friends and administer first aide.” Mrs. Walton also assisted doctors in delivering babies in the homes of people who could not afford the cost of a hospital visit. “I did not know what a midwife was during those days, but I guess that is what I did,” she said. A member of the 1936 class of Booker T. Washington High School, she worked as a nurse’s aide at Baylor Hospital when she was a young girl. Her skills and devotion to patient care impressed a nurse who suggested that she pursue nursing as a profession. She enrolled at the Brewster Methodist Hospital-School of Nursing in Jacksonville, Florida. She continued her studies at Florida A&M and Howard Universities. She joined the Army as a lieutenant in 1944 in the midst of World War II. PAGE 7

“After the war my mother returned to Dallas where she worked at Baylor Hospital as a public health nurse,” said her daughter, Marilyn, a professional singer who has performed around the world. “She became the second Black nurse hired at Parkland Hospital.” “My mother was a caregiver for my father, Linuard, when he became ill,” she said. “Her life was devoted to healing and to lifting the spirits of others. She was an amazing mother and a tremendous friend. Mr. Walton passed in 1980.” During the height of segregation both Mr. and Mrs. Walton earned advanced academic degrees at universities in California. They were recognized among the educational elite in this country and constantly inspired young people to get as many degrees as they could. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, who knew Mrs. Walton, called her “an influential and historic” figure in Dallas. “She was a selfless caregiver whose faith helped her to overcome the challenges of discrimination. We are grateful for her service to our
country and her courage in the face of adversity.” Mrs. Walton started her own healthcare business and worked until she was injured in an automobile accident five months ago. She continued to read her scripture, tend to her garden and call her friends with words of inspiration and praise, her daughter said.

Gwendolyn, I truly believe that it was not intended for man to have only one woman. Jim Dear Jim
To be married and remain faithful is so hard Dear Gwendolyn I have been married for 32 years. My wife is a wonderful person but says she cannot continue to ignore my cheating. My marriage is nearing a divorce. We have five children. I love her but admit I stayed with her because of the children. She is looking forward to early retirement. She has made plans for us to go on exclusive vacations. I don’t intend to go with her. Eight months ago I broke off my relationship with my side woman I had for six years. Two weeks after that I met another ‘side woman’ and I just can’t control myself.
Let me tell you this: You are playing Russian Roullette with your life, not with one gun – but with two. A divorce is in order and should have been years ago. You did not stay with your wife because of the children. You stayed with your wife because she had a job. Get your life together before you meet with tragedy. After 32 years of marriage and five children, it’s time to bring your dog in. You can no longer bark like a young man. It is wrong for any man not to appreciate and respect his wife. Your wife and her gun can harm you. Your lady on the side with her gun will harm you because everything you told her was untrue. It was not meant for man to have two or more women. Think about it. Financially he can barely —provide for one.

Obama Supporter Disinvited from Morehouse Baccalaureate over Political Views Morehouse College alumni are outraged by the college's decision to disinvite fellow alum, the Rev. Dr. Kevin R. Johnson, Senior Pastor of the Bright Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia, as the baccalaureate speaker on May 18, 2013. After being announced to alumni and the college community as the baccalaureate speaker, Morehouse College President John Silvanus Wilson, Jr. contacted Johnson on April 15th via phone to inform him of the decision due to concerns about views Johnson expressed in an opinion editorial in The Philadelphia Tribune and stated that the article
was "untimely" given that President Obama is the 2013 Commencement speaker, a day after Baccalaureate. The article entitled, "A President for Everyone, Except Black People," was published on April 14th and respectfully criticized the lack of African-American appointees in President Barack Obama's cabinet and challenged the lack of policies specifically designed to reduce poverty. On April 15th and April 16th, coincidentally the 50th Anniversary of Dr. King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail," Wilson contacted Johnson and encouraged him to resign as the speaker, a suggestion Johnson refused. Wilson then proposed that Johnson agree to be one of three speakers for the event. Johnson refused this offer as well on the grounds that it was a departure from the college's tradition of having one baccalaureate speaker, and all initial representations made to him. Accentuating the principle of free speech, Johnson said, "I have always been and continue to be a supporter of President Obama. The
issue is not about the article in question, but about Morehouse's longstanding history and pedagogy of free thought and free speech. Without free thought and free speech, Morehouse would not have produced our most admired alumnus, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." Johnson submitted a letter to Wilson on April 17th insisting that Wilson honor his original invitation. Instead, President Wilson proceeded to replace Johnson with three new

baccalaureate speakers—Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock, Senior Pastor of the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, Senior Pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, and a graduating senior. The college posted Warnock and Moss' names on its website on April 23rd as the speakers, but quickly removed their names from the site on April 25th after Warnock and Moss withdrew their names.

amille Bradfield Take the super silly comedic antics of The Three Stooges, the attention-grabbing action of virtually any Michael Bay film (take your pick), a starstudded cast whose muscles have muscles, and a true crime storyline ripped right out of the headlines and you have Paramount Pictures’ latest action/crime/comedy, PAIN & GAIN. Based on magazine articles written by Pete Collins with the screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and directed by Bay, PAIN & GAIN stars Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie as three bodybuilders in the 90s, known as Miami’s Sun Gym Gang, who cook up an implausible kidnapping and extortion scheme to secure their slice of the American pie. Unfortunately for them, their diabolical plan backfires and the bolts begin to fall off the wheels spoke by spoke, painting the three amigos as bumbling idiots turned bonafide, hardcore criminals. The mastermind of the trio is Daniel Lugo (Wahlberg), a personal trainer with a history of fraud crimes, who quickly works his way up to manager at the Sun Gym after improving the gym’s image and increasing profits with modern marketing strategies. During a random selfinventory of his life, Lugo realizes that he will never achieve the life he desires simply by training other PAGE 14

people. So when one of Lugo’s clients, a particularly egotistical, wealthy, rude businessman named Victor Kershaw (played by Tony Shalhoub) begins spouting off about his assets, Lugo hatches a plot to kidnap his client and force Kershaw to sign everything over to him. Enter Frick and Frack. Lugo obviously needs help to pull this off, so he recruits friend and fellow trainer, Adrian Doorbal (Mackie) and trainer/ex-con Paul Doyle (Johnson). Although the men have at least two things in common — being fitness fanatics and coveting the lifestyles of the rich and famous — they couldn’t be more polar opposite in personality. Lugo is clearly the brains of the operation and ringleader of the gang; Doorbal is more of a follower, doing whatever has to be done to meet their illegal activity goals; and due to his massive, Incredible Hulk-like physique, sans the Kelly green complexion, Doyle provides the necessary

brawn for their little criminal enterprise. After a series of screw-ups including a longer-than-planned torture session and multiple botched attempts to kill Kershaw, they finally get their hands on the money, but as life has taught us, once people come into money, it is never enough and eventually they will want more, in this case, by any means necessary. Yep. You guessed it. They get greedy and decide to do another hit and here is where things spin completely out of control. This time they prey on phonesex king, Frank Griga and his girlfriend, Krisztina Furton, but when Frank starts asking too many questions, he pays the ultimate price and Krisztina soon follows when she succumbs to lethal doses of a horse tranquilizer. Yes, all of this actually happened in real life. You cannot make this stuff up. Wahlberg, Johnson and Mackie have dynamic onscreen chemistry and deliver a hilarious, outrageously entertaining !
performance in PAIN & GAIN. Other notable performances include Rebel Wilson, Ed Harris and Shalhoub. And of course, pulling all of these shocking pieces together, is acclaimed director, Michael Bay, known for his extraordinary vision with action movies (think TRANSFORMERS franchise, ARMAGEDDON, BAD BOYS). With a running time of two hours and 10 minutes, PAIN & GAIN is rated R for bloody violence, crude sexual content, nudity, language throughout and drug use. It is a bizarre, laughout-loud and at times cringeworthy tale (remember two people lost their lives and the surviving victim was seriously injured) that has been skillfully adapted for the big screen. Outrageously entertaining! Three reels

Getting deep in the roots By Ms. Ray www.deepintheroots.com
Yes, what you eat and drink affects your hair. I am asked oen, why is my hair dry? Why is my scalp flaky and have white build up? Why is my hair thinning? And the list goes on. e body is 75% water so if you don’t put water back in the body you will become dehydrated. When the body is dehydrated the natural sebum doesn’t secrete; therefore making hair dry and brittle. I know our day to day schedules get hectic and a cup of coffee seems to keep you on the ledge; however it will produce a white build up on the scalp along with eating a diet high in saturated fats, sugars and processed foods. It is imperative that we consume at least 7-14 servings of raw fruits and vegetables daily so that our body can function properly and heal itself. When one’s circulatory system is off in their body then the blood is not circulating correctly on their scalp and will cause thinning and balding. Not to mention if you’re not eating properly it will began to affect your immune system and onset illnesses and diseases. Among the medications that can potentially cause hair loss are blood thinners, vitamin A supplements, some arthritis medications, antidepressants, gout medications, medications for certain heart problems, blood pressure medications, and birth control pills. Healthy hair begins from the inside out. You must be willing to ingest foods and liquids that will add to the vitality of your hair making it full of life and luster. ere are alternatives to ensure you get what you need, visit www.msrayjuiceplus.com. Mark your calendar National Day Of Prayer 12th consecutive observance of the National Day of Prayer in Garland, Texas. The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Our Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families. The Task Force represents a Judeo Christian expression of the national observance, based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible.
