known Thelma Youngblood for over 20 years. Cheryl Smith She’s a warrior -- speaking out and fighting against injustices. She’s candid, truthful and a die-hard supporter if she believes in you or your cause. She also has causes of her own and she has been known to stand up on her own, alone, if need be to address issues she deemed worthy. When you go into battle, when you’re dealing with adversity or when you’re fighting wrong, you want to have a Thelma Youngblood on your side. For over a decade, I have watched her caring for her bedridden mother, Mrs. Lucy Allison. Talk about love. I saw such tenderness and compassion as Thelma did everything possible to make sure that her beautiful mother was comfortable, clean, safe and well taken care of. It was so peaceful to watch the way Mrs. Allison was treated, which is in stark contrast to numerous reports I have heard about abuses inflicted upon the elderly. When people talk about nursing homes, or selfish irresponsible relatives; well the stories make great fodder for horror flicks or Lifetime Movies. Before she became bedridden, I recall a loving woman who took an interest in her daughter’s Zenobia and Thelma’s lives and those around them. She was kind and offered a gentle smile of welcome. Even when she could no longer respond, Thelma still kept her mother informed, sharing news of the day and letting her know of visitors. I know there were times when Thelma would have been on the frontlines, but she had her priorities in order and she never let anything keep her from taking care of her mother. On Monday, June 17, 2013, Mrs. Allison transitioned. All I could think about was the love she was surrounded by and I took solace in knowing that her 94 years ended peacefully. And when I think about society and sometimes how we treat our elderly and our young; well, I just think we could all learn quite a bit from Thelma Youngblood.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...
Fred A. Jones JONES 2000 & BEYOND Founder/CEO Jobs Skills Coach Placement Specialist
Let me say that my wife Debra and I have been extremely busy through the JONES 2000 & BEYOND program working in the “professional development jobs skills area”. The job market is improving especially in Texas your high end demand fields in healthcare, restaurants, hospitality, building and constr uction, sales, engineering, oil and gas, green energy, technology, and criminal justice, etc. are a few of the new employment streams out there. Unemployment claims continue to drop and although not where we would like it, still better than when this mess started in 08/09. The President’s steady a genda is producing results much to the despair of the GOP, but that’s a different story. The unemployment rate for Texas is 6.3% the rate average for the county is around 7.50% again a five-year low! Yes, this is great news except the African Americans. Yes there are two sides to every coin. The flip side to the unemployment coin for African Americans is still double the national average. The rate for us is still unacceptably high at 12% to 13% this is why we have to attack this fact with a concentrated and cooperative effort. T h e J O N E S 2 0 0 0 & B E YO N D program has from the beginning 22 years ago attacked self-esteem, critical thinking, what to wear and when to wear it, communication skills, etiquette, diet and nutrition, relationships and social behavior all areas that are contributing to the high unemployment rate for African Americans. Employment still begins at home and school when a student is continuously exhibiting behavioral issues then how can

You see those of us in business have career jobs or the experiences of life understand this, most of our children don’t. They don’t comprehend success in its pure form because their lives were surrounded by misconceived forms of success i.e. sexual conquest, the negative
hustle game, school on a back burner topic, toxic relationships. Self confidence allows failure to be brushed off easier. What we witness is that students and clients have difficulty accepting positive uplifting because they don’t believe in themselves. Our children have difficulty spelling and reading with comprehension because books and literature are not i m p o r t a n t t o t h e m . Te x t i n g a n d technology fur ther exacerbates the condition because that’s’ how they communicate. The acquired comfort skill of face to face, proper diction, communication is vital for effective interviewing and getting your points across. Most clients remain unemployed because of their interviewing skills or lack of effective writing is a vital key for resume writing. Another group of clients are still creating resumes that are ancient in the format and content. Attire, proper fit, appropriate styles are still an issue, as a matter of fact our young brothers are sagging more than ever! How then can they obtain employment if the concept of proper attire and grooming has not been addressed? Which fork do I use? Where does my napkin go? Table etiquette has been our staple and you had better best believe it remains so today. In coming articles I will be giving tips and sug gestions to improve our competitive employment chances. We have been successful with our clients feeling better about their employment chances because of incorporating new techniques and changing lanes of mindsets. My wife and I still believe the Black unemployment figures can be reduced and children can be fantastic students and ready to enter the employment pipeline. We believe that those returning veterans, folk over 50 and ex-offenders still can c o m p e te i n t h e e m p l o y m e n t g a m e effectively, why because we’ve seen it and we will share the information and keep you informed.

TEXAS METRO NEWS
JUNE 21, 2013
By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Given the current state of our economy, the United States cannot afford to continue the descent in the quality of education its students receive. If we are to secure our future and remain a competitive nation, we must make significant improvements in our educational system. A failure to do so will have drastic consequences for long-range economic prosperity. The U.S. is ranked ninth globally in the number of young people who are enrolled in colleges and universities. We are fifteenth in the number of university degrees awarded annually. Our country continues to fail young people from economically challenged families. The numbers of young people from low-income families that attend college are dismal. The system is leaving too many disadvantaged students behind, pushing the American dream beyond their grasp. There are a number of areas that must be addressed, but I strongly believe that we must initially focus on our youngest students. Once those in elementary and secondary schools are equipped with solid educational foundations, they will excel academically and be prepared to join a sustainable and reliable workforce when they graduate from college, university or trade school. We must also provide our teachers with adequate resources so that they are able to expose students to new ideas and concepts that otherwise would elude them. We must emphasize to young students that post-secondary education or career technical training is essential to their success, and the continued competitiveness of our country. !
Agencies such as NASA and the National Science Foundation should be commended for their efforts to excite and cultivate our next generation of innovators. President Obama has stated that our goal as a nation should be to have the highest percentage of college graduates in the world by 2020. This should be a top priority. Additionally, we must make education affordable. We should not burden young people with insurmountable debt that deters them from pursuing an education. As a member of Congress, I have fought to protect the Pell Grant Program, and for increased funding to community colleges and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. I strongly support the Department of Education’s “Race to the Top” program, which makes grants available to those states that demonstrate a commitment to reform. As reforms in education evolve, we must pay particular attention to training that is available in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). A degree in engineering, for instance, can provide a bright future for students who decide to pursue that discipline. Ursula Burns, who heads the Xerox Corporation, has an engineering degree. Successful careers await those who study science, mathematics and technology as well. No doubt many of our young people will complain that “STEM” study is difficult. Yet, during my years in elected office, I have witnessed that greatness requires rigorous determination. Our students will discover that the rewards consistent with superior academic preparation are plentiful. The very backbone of our nation is a learned, visionary and dedicated workforce, possessed with exceptional skills and talents. These are the characteristics of those who made America the most potent industrial and intellectual power in the world. An educational system that is revolutionary in its thinking, planning and implementation will produce such men and women. That is our need. That is what we must demand! !

Faster and more Furious
Bradfield
By Jamille Bradfield
Normally, when I hear that there is a sixth sequel of any movie franchise in production, I sigh heavily and say to myself in a long, drawn out, melodramatic stage voice, “Why?” However, to Universal Pictures’ credit, its latest release of action movie FAST & FURIOUS 6 is surprisingly good. Written by Chris Morgan and Gary Scott Thompson, and directed by Justin Lin, FAST & FURIOUS 6 reunites the diverse ensemble cast of extraordinarily skilled drivers/car aficionados for another wild ride down Adventure Lane. The story picks up where the fifth sequel left off with Dom and his crew living in the lap of luxury in different parts of the world resulting from their big $100 million heist in Rio. Brian (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) have a new baby. Han (Sung Kang) and Gisele (Gal Gadot) are in a relationship

and making plans for their future. Tej (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) a re enjoying bachelorhood complete with scantily clad beauties. And last but not least, the gang’s fearless leader, Dom (Vin Diesel) and
Elena (Elsa Pataky) are also a hot item. That is until their dear old friend, Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) shows up with news of a recent Letty sighting. Hobbs needs Dom and his crew’s assistance to help take down a new criminal mastermind, named Shaw (Luke Evans), who is believed to have Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) working for him. One of the most refreshing things about this sequel is that it very well could be a stand alone action/adventure film i.e. even if you have never been a FAST & FURIOUS fan over the years, you could easily see this film without the benefit of seeing the first five movies and follow the storyline just fine. One obviously deliberate decision in making this film was to focus a lot less emphasis on the cars and driving as with the past movies and instead focus primarily on the main plot !
of taking down the elusive crime boss and sub-plot of reconnecting Dom and Letty romantically. While all of the actors’ performances are decent, R&B recording artist turned actor, Tyrese, steals the show with his comic relief and overall delivery. Likewise from a directorial perspective, Justin Lin is to be commended for bringing his vision of this movie to life on the big screen. Sure, most of the car chase scenes and stunts are completely implausible, but that’s exactly what I expect from this type of movie — jaw-dropping action and mindless entertainment. Nothing more. Nothing less. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence, action and mayhem throughout, some sexuality and language, FAST & FURIOUS 6, has a running time of two hours and 10 minutes and is in theaters nationwide. From the looks of things, we are in for more moving violations with this franchise. Can you say Jason Statham? Enough said. A must see action film! Three reels !

At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
