Much love for the Black Press "For too long others have spoken for us" "We mean to plead our own cause!"

Cheryl Smith “Riots led to the integration of the press and a brain drain that was devastating.” - Phyl Garland “I think we do need a black press today, very, very much so. We have no voice that tells us about our own lives.” -Evelyn Cunningham “We didn't exist in the other papers. We were neither born, we didn't get married, we didn't die, we didn't fight in any wars, we never participated in anything of a scientific achievement. We were truly invisible unless we committed a crime.” -Vernon Jarrett

“I have experience with my hometown papers, the defender, the crusader, the citizen. there are a bunch of historically African American papers in Chicago, that when I was in the state legislature, would cover stories that I was working on that the mainstream press did not cover...if ya’ll were covering me when nobody wanted to cover me then you should be able to cover me when everybody wants to cover me. I think that’s the right thing to do and that attitude and approach will continue when I’m in the White House” Those words were spoken by then Sen. Barack Obama when I asked him if journalists from the Black Press would have access to him, should he become President of the United States of America. I believe that many believe that in five and a half years, the Black Press, overall, has not been afforded the same access. Sure a few syndicated radio programs, TV One, BET, national magazines and a few others have garnered interviews, but overall, the masses are not. We all understand that President Obama is busy. I knew this and understood it when I asked the question. Having worked for a politician, I knew that he would face an unprecedented number of interview requests and those requests would come from reputable and suspect media outlets, of all genres and persuasions. He couldn’t possibly make everyone happy nor make time for every interview. I had control over what I asked. I had no control over Sen. Obama’s response. Those were his words, his commitment. For as long as I can remember, I have loved the Black Press. As much as I have supported, it has been disheartening at times when I witness the disdain that some Black people show. I appreciated the senator’s kind words of support for the Black Press and believe that he was sincere in his response. In contrast, however, are the many who have nothing positive to say about the Black Press. Folks operate under the delusion that only Black-owned newspapers have errors, failing to realize that retractions and corrections are printed daily in publications. Dallas Weekly Publisher Jim Washington would urge me to “let the paper go” to the printer as I tried to ensure that I caught every single typo. I know that I am not the only journalist striving for journalistic excellence at a Black-owned newspaper. They are all across the country and around the world, as I saw from my brother Pius Njawe at Le Messager in Cameroon. Imagine my chagrin and disappointment when I saw someone’s website and in their media section, they have all these clippings from other publications and none from the Black Press. I know the Black Press covered them also. Where were the clips? Or others who, every time they are mentioned positively in a mainstream publication, they email the links out to their friends but they don’t do the same for the Black Press. Then, just let a negative story appear in the mainstream publications. Ahhh, then the Black Press has value. Marcus Garvey encouraged us to “fall in love with ourselves and our people.” That love could help us make not only a stronger Black Press, but a stronger community and world. I will continue to follow those valiant journalists like Ida B. Wells Barnett and I urge you to support the Black Press. Support with your dollars, information, critiques and praise. Don’t sit idly by and criticize, especially if you’ve done nothing to help. There was a time when folks read the Black newspapers to find out what was going in their communities. That sense of community is gone -- gone with the control of our communities. Still, though we can control the messages that come out of our neighborhoods. Send your press releases, call with your story ideas and scoops, advertise your businesses and events, share good news like weddings, births, promotions, engagements and yes, celebrations of life. I still believe in the Black Press. And please understand, I’m talking positively about the Black Press, not negatively about anything else. Positive energy will give our descendants something to be proud of centuries from now and the Black Press will tell many of those stories that would never be told!

A Disgraceful Court Decision By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

With its ruling on the Voting Rights Act, the Supreme Court has taken the country back to a time when racial minorities were not able to participate equitably in the voting process. The Court’s unprecedented decision is disgraceful to citizens, civil rights leaders and legislators who have fought to preserve equal voting rights in this country. It reminds me of a time in our history when minorities were prevented from voting because they had to pay a “poll tax” before they could vote. The tax represented a meanspirited and vicious way of keeping hundreds of thousands of people from voting. The objection to eliminating the poll tax was that it would allow people of color to “flood the polls.” I recall having to pay a poll tax to vote in Texas. The practice began in my state in 1902. It did not end until 1966. During those 64 years, hundreds of thousands of our citizens were denied the right to vote, an opportunity to participate in American democracy. The federal government prohibited the use of a poll tax in national elections in 1964 with the passage of the 24th amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Court’s current assault on the Voting Rights Act prevents the federal

Voting Rights Decision a Major Blow to Civil Rights of Minorities The Supreme Court made other decisions this week as well. In addition to landmark gay rights cases, they ruled on voters’ rights. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court struck down a central part of the Voting Rights Act, invalidating crucial protections passed by Congress in 1965 and renewed four times in the decades since. The sharply divided decision will significantly reduce the federal government’s role in overseeing voting laws in areas with a history of discrimination against AfricanAmericans and other minorities.

government from ensuring that states with a history of racial discrimination will not enact voting methods and procedures that will deny a very significant right and duty. Prior to the recent decision nine states, mostly located in the southern United States, had to receive clearance or prior approval from the Justice Department or a federal court before they could institute changes in voting methods or engage in redistricting. In its ruling, the Court did not alter Section Five. Instead, it ruled that the formula, detailed in Section Four, used to determine which states should be covered by Section Five went beyond constitutional limits and used data that was outdated. The effect of that ruling is to mute Section Five, and allow states to amend voting procedures and practices as they see fit without fear of federal intervention. Those who advocated for radical changes in the Voting Rights Act said that increasing numbers of racial minorities participated in state and national elections.

They even pointed to the election of President Barack Obama as a reason for the elimination of federal oversight and intervention. The reality is that since 2010, eight southern states passed laws designed to make voting more cumbersome for racial minorities. Various civil rights organizations and entities such as the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have consistently opposed the elimination of federal involvement in local elections. Recently, a U.S. Court of Appeals judge said that without Section Five of the Voting Rights Act minority voters would suffer. Efforts to lessen the impact of the minority vote in Texas have been egregious. Last summer, a federal court in Washington stated that a redistricting map enacted by the Republican controlled legislature was “purposefully discriminatory.” In the spring of 2012, the Texas NAACP and Mexican American Legislative Caucus of the Texas House

of Representatives went to federal court to stop the state from requiring a photo ID in state elections. A federal court agreed, finding that the law violated Section Five of the Voting Rights Act. Bipartisan coalitions of members of both the House and Senate have historically supported the Voting Rights Act and its provisions. In 2006, the Act was renewed for 25 years. The vote in the House 390 to 30, while the vote in the Senate was 98 to zero. President George W. Bush signed the measure. Simply stated, the Voting Rights Act is the perpetuation of our democracy. We are a great country because all of our citizens have the right to exercise the right to vote without fear of intimidation. Congress must now come together to do what we all know is the right thing to do. We must once again make the Voting Rights Act a principled piece of legislation that protects all of our citizens, regardless of race, class, or religious preference. This is why we are Americans. This is fundamental to our freedom.

Here are some opinions on the ruling:

John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.): “While I am encouraged that the Court upheld the preclearance requirement of Section 5, its decision striking the coverage formula in Section 4 will do real damage to voting rights absent a swift and clear congressional legislative response. It is unfortunate that the Court ignored Congress’ unprecedented and comprehensive legislative findings in reauthorizing the Voting Rights Act in 2006 on an overwhelming and bipartisan basis. The decision missed an opportunity to reinforce the important role that the federal government has in ensuring that all Americans have an equal right to access the ballot box and have their votes count. I am committed to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure that the voting rights of all Americans are protected.”

never again permit racial prejudices in the electoral process. Section 5 of the Act was a bipartisan effort to rectify past injustices and ensure minorities’ ability to participate in elections, but the threat of discrimination still exists. I am disappointed by the Court’s ruling, but my colleagues and I will work in a bipartisan fashion to update Section 4 to ensure Section 5 can be properly implemented to protect voting rights, especially for minorities. This is going to take time and will require members from both sides of the aisle to put partisan politics aside and ensure Americans’ most sacred right is protected.”

Alliance for Retired Americans “The decision turns back the clock and makes it much easier to discriminate,” said Ruben Burks, Secretary-Treasurer of the Alliance. “There is still so much to be done. We hope Congress will act quickly to remedy this terrible, wrong decision.” TX Rep. Helen Giddings “That is true that the country has changed. But, how much of that change is due to the Voting Rights Act? If the country was sick, and the Voting Rights Act was the prescription, and we take the prescription away, will we still get better?” Rep. Giddings calls upon our leaders in Washington to act swiftly and pass new legislation that would protect the rights of all Americans as it relates to one of our most fundamental rights: the right to vote.

The opinions expressed by

F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr. (RWis.): “The Voting Rights Act is vital to America’s commitment to

Conference focuses on ministering to women By Cheryl Smith Texas Metro News

Sometimes we need someone to stand for us and other times it is good to have someone to help us to stand on our own! What started out as a complement to a larger and more focused conference, the E.K. Bailey International Expository Preaching Conference, has evolved into a ministry touching the lives of women around the world, under the leadership of Dr. Sheila Bailey. Dr. Bailey is enjoying an exciting time in her life. At the youthful age of 66 she said she feels vibrant and comfortable with the season she is in presently and hopes to touch the lives of other women in the various seasons of their existence. A deeply spiritual woman, this mother of three believes there is value in learning from other’s experiences as well as sharing your own. So, when she takes to the stage for the 15th annual S.T.A.N.D. (Sisters Touching Assisting Networking with Dignity networking with DIGNITY) Dallas Conference, presented by Sheila B. Ministries and Concord Church, July 8-11, 2013 at the Fairmont Hotel, 1414 N. Akard Street, the energy and excitement will surely be contagious, inspiring and for some, therapeutic. Dr. Bailey is the former first lady of Concord Baptist Church and widow of the renowned Pastor E.K. Bailey. Her daughters: Pastor Cokiesha Bailey Robinson and Shenikwa Bailey Cager will be standing proudly with their mother at the conference’s Women of Influence Luncheon where the three have a treat in store for PAGE 7

The mother of two young girls said she’s a teacher at heart and left the classroom to take on the important role of helping to shape the young minds at the church. “Everyone knows I am a teacher,” she said, pointing out that while at a young age she didn’t necessarily see herself teaching in the church and didn’t know where she would end up, she was “certain I would be a teacher.” There are several other speakers slated for the conference. More opinions of Supreme Court decision, extension of the preclearance requirements of Section 5 of the VRA. Today, the activist majority on the Supreme Court has taken the unprecedented step of taking over a uniquely legislative function in disregard of the extensive work of the legislative branch and substituting their own judgment for that of elected representatives. The decision overturning Section 4 of the VRA leaves millions of Americans vulnerable to discrimination in the most fundamental right of citizenship— the right to vote. I am deeply disappointed by the result they have reached and its impact on minority voters as well as the precedent they have set for disregarding the factual and political judgment of elected Members of Congress.” Steve Chabot (R-Ohio): “I am disappointed that the Court invalidated the Voting Rights Act’s coverage formula, which has been used for decades to help protect the voting rights of millions of Americans. However, by leaving Section 5’s pre-clearance requirements intact, the Court has given Congress the opportunity to amend the coverage formula to preserve these important protections. I am hopeful that we will work together to enact an appropriate fix in the same bipartisan manner and spirit that we did when reauthorizing the Voting Rights Act in 2006.” PAGE 11

Steelworkers: Supreme Court Eviscerated Voting Rights Act The United Steelworkers (USW) criticized the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder and said that the court has cleared the way for states to launch anti-democratic voter suppression and redistricting schemes not seen in this country since Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The legislation effectively curbed widespread, systemic disenfranchisement of African Americans and other minorities throughout most of the last halfcentury by requiring federal approval for state and local governments to change election laws or procedures. USW International President Leo W. Gerard condemned the radical, right-wing majority court for overturning the landmark legislation, designed to protect citizens in states and localities with a history of suppressing minority votes. “By eviscerating the Voting Rights Act, which was approved overwhelmingly in the U.S. House and unanimously in the Senate, the Supreme Court has at once usurped Congress and set back civil rights 50 years,” Gerard said. “More Americans than ever are now at risk of being disenfranchised as a result of this gross injustice and our democracy is immediately weakened.” USW International Vice President Fred Redmond said that the decision

will enable states to thwart would-be voters by implementing expensive, unnecessary voter identification programs and by redistricting maps to minimize or marginalize minority votes. “Over the past several years, the USW has been working with the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups against voter identification laws and other tactics intended to suppress voting,” Redmond said. “Our movement is

The Skinny on Healthy Hair By K Flewellen

The ultimate goal is always healthy hair. Yet with every product on the shelf promising to deliver healthy hair and claiming to be the “cure all,” where does one begin? There are three influencing components to healthy hair: 1. Diet. Healthy hair always begins with a healthy diet. Because hair is nourished through the blood, it is important to incorporate into your diet hair healthy foods such as salmon, leafy green vegetables, and fresh fruit. Drinking plenty of water is also important because water encourages blood flow and helps with maintaining an optimal moisture balance in the hair and skin. Water hydrates the body, which includes the hair and scalp and creates a healthy environment for growth.

As a tenured stylist in the hair care industry, I am often asked, “What are your favorite hairstyles or trends for the season?” As simple as that may sound, that’s a difficult question for me. Why? Because I love hair. Every time I start to answer, my adrenaline is slightly elevated. I’m instantly bombarded with images of ALL the current hair trends and I think: I like hair long, medium, or short. I like textured hair and curly hair; I also like it straight. Hair can be red, brunette, blonde, or somewhere in between. I like a dazzling, ornate up-do as much as a clean side-swept ponytail. From the artistic and visually stimulating value of cornrows, to the awe inspiring afro or a classic bob; the list goes on and on. I love hair!

Kids 1/2 Price

3. Routine Maintenance. Like most things in life, hair requires tender loving care and gentle treatment to maintain its luster. Make sure to: Shampoo and condition often. Dirty hair is three times more likely to burn. Once you shampoo your hair, seal it with conditioner to lock in the moisture. Protect your hair. Heated tools deliver great looks, but they can also burn hair. Before using your flat irons or curling irons, apply a styling product with heat protectant.

Healthy hair is strong, elastic, and resistant to breakage. Healthy hair is also soft, silky to the touch with lots of bounce and shine. Did you know that a healthy strand of human hair is stronger than a strand of copper the same width? A dry strand of healthy hair should be able to stretch 15 to 20% of its length without breaking; a wet strand should stretch about 50%. By contrast, damaged hair has a rough texture; is dull, dry, and brittle to the touch. It also breaks easily, and is spongy.

The conditioning treatments and products available today can help restore damaged hair. Even so, an ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure!

2. Quality products. Any product promising dramatic hair growth is pulling your leg. Hair grows about ½ inch month, and products can be used to both sustain the growth and protect against environmental factors. Although a lot of revolutionary products are out there on the market, it is important to use products that are specific to your hair care needs. Even a good product can be detrimental if not properly used.

Many factors should be considered when determining what makes a style work. But with every hairstyle there is one thing that should always remain consistent - healthy hair! The most universal trend and fashion accessory is a healthy head of hair. So, the question is: What is healthy hair? And, how does one obtain it?

Momma’s baby, daddy’s maybe Dear Gwendolyn:

I have two brothers and no sisters. I am the spoiled girl. My family is going through a crisis. This is the problem: My brother met a girl last year and he claims it was love at first sight. Two months ago, she and my brother came by and that was the first time we saw the baby. The two of them got an apartment together three months before the baby was born. My mother is upset, my younger brother is upset, and I am upset. You see…my brother is rather slow. When we tried to tell him he needs a DNA test, he became furious. He says we are just jealous that finally he met a woman who truly loves him. Gwendolyn, what should we do? That lady is playing him for stupid. His

I agree your brother should request the DNA test. But let me tell you this: He is gloating over the fact he has a woman. Some men have no problem whatsoever getting a date or a wife. Not true with all men. Your brother falls in the latter. Human features can be a strange thing. Until there is a DNA test, you cannot go by the looks of the child. People often resemble people and many times are not related even as a distant cousin. It can happen that way. Many men know or have an idea that their baby is not their baby. But they want the woman and that’s what love is all about. I just hope he does not go ape crazy when they have their first big argument and she tells him — It’s not your baby anyway. Gwen

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

'Ain’t Nothing Like Freedom' Cynthia McKinney, stands on the front-line of humanity, fighting for the personal freedoms and human rights of exploited individuals and oppressed peoples here in the USA and around the globe. Ain’t Nothing Like Freedom, speaks honestly about her challenges and achievements with Congress. It openly discusses the USA’s unprecedented military spending levels, over-financing of private banks with public funds, proliferation of the prison-industrial-complex, occupation and exploitation of Haiti, continued unconditional support of/for Israel, questionable destruction of New York’s Twin Towers, NATO’s bombing of Libya, and much more. A true warrior of honor and integrity, Cynthia McKinney pits her personal love for freedom against the private politics of profit-over-people. Both her words and her work inspire other peaceloving humans to become active allies of justice as well. Come celebrate freedom with Cynthia McKinney. Meet, share, and be inspired by this truly courageous freedom fighter. Free and open to the Public
