Message to the People... Internet brings out the worst in many I don’t know what I was thinking back when I was first introduced to the internet. I do remember veteran journalist George E. Curry giving me some tips when he encouraged me to become an AOL user and to use emails as a form of communication.

Cheryl Smith

He told me it was the wave and way of the future. Over the years I have come to love and to abhor the internet. I have seen the benefits and I have seen the abuses and devastation that has occurred when used irresponsibly. I consider the internet to be the great equalizer because it is a forum for people who never had a voice; enabling them to compete with the “big boys.” Now we don’t have to rely on a few voices to shape the thoughts and actions of the masses, and that has proven to be a good thing!

ASK GWEN 10

When you consider the overall dismal hiring records of media outlets; when it comes to people of color, it is refreshing to know that opportunities abound on the internet. The internet has introduced some stars, unveiled frauds and balanced the playing field. In contrast there is a lot of negativity that you can attribute to the internet. The internet is not only a place for sexual predators to wreak havoc. It is also the place where the heartless find courage to say some of the most horrific things. Sure the racists have a field day and bullies become brave, to a certain extent. What occurs is a lot of hateful, hurtful venom is spewed, sometimes causing a lot of emotional pain. Everyone can agree that if folks had to sign their real names or post their pictures everytime they posed a comment, there wouldn’t be so many vicious attacks.

BLACK HISTORY 15

The internet allows people who do not feel good about themselves to pass those feelings on to others. We all know misery loves company! No one is safe from the tongue of someone who does not like their life or existence. For some, tearing another person down is a form of self-elevation. Users of the internet ceases to amaze me as I have viewed attacks against children, physically challenged, elderly, and even the dead. Now there was a time when, no matter how true the statements could be, folks did not speak negatively about the dead. It was a respect factor. Somebody found something nice to say about the dearly departed or they said nothing at all.

I MESSENGER Cheryl Smith, Publisher Established 2011 IMESSENGER is a tribute to Le Messager, founded by Cameroonian journalist Pius Njawe and The Messenger, an independent magazine, founded by labor activist A . !

Not the case in 2013, though! No one can escape the wrath of a person who likes to get on line and spread hatred. We must all join in the fight against cyber bullying. Legislators across the country are attempting to enact laws that punish the guilty. I know when Mr. Curry introduced the internet to me he couldn’t have imagined that folks would use it to destroy the lives of others. People have died, been publicly humiliated, driven to commit bad acts and sadly, portrayed themselves in unflattering and potentially harmful ways. Scan the internet and you can read about the numerous murders, suicides, broken relationships and ill feelings generated. Hopefully you aren’t contributing to the delinquency of the internet.

The Importance of Small Business By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

The expansion and creation of small businesses is extremely important to America’s recovery from a period of intense economic instability. In Texas there are approximatel y two million small businesses. They are the largest employers in our state, representing more than forty-five percent of private sector jobs. Many small businesses, owned by women and minorities, have grown during the last the ten years, according to Texas economic officials who track business statistics. Minority owned businesses in the state number 725,000. Small businesses are defined as those who employ fewer than one hundred employees and whose annual revenues are less than $20 million. Small businesses owners in Texas, particularly in North Texas, play a crucial role in strengthening our economy and creating vital l y needed jobs. Women owned businesses, for

instance, are helping to change the face of our n a t i o n’s e c o n o m i c infrastructure. Currently, women are the majority owners of a third of A m e r i c a ’s s m a l l businesses. They own half of all small b u s i n e s s e s i n t h i s c o u n t r y, according to statistics keep by the Small Business Administration. Most recently, I hosted, with the assistance of the Small Business Administration, the second of a series of for ums dealing with small business issues, development and growth. The purpose of the forum, held on June 7th at the Bill J. Priest Center for Economic Development in South Dallas, was to promote efforts aimed at strengthening the role of women business owners in the community.

S p e c i f i c a l l y, t h e session which was attended by approximately fifty small business owners was designed to provide mana gement and financial assistance that enhances women owned businesses. Yolanda Olivarez, the U. S . Small Business Ad m i n i s t r a t i o n’s Re g i o n a l Administrator, outlined for the attendees various programs that the SBA has in place to assist them. She also spent considerable time talking about three concerns that many small business owners have, capital, contracting and counseling. In excess of $75 million in SBA loans have been made to women owned businesses in the Dallas region since we have placed a major emphasis on the growth of

small businesses owned by women, she said. The SBA’s office of Women Business Ownership advocates on behalf of businesses owned by females. There are approximately one hundred women's business centers located throughout the country which provide training, mentoring and counseling ser vices to women business owners. The next Small Business Forum will be held during the late summer. We will continue to match willing individuals with government officials, and private sectors participants who will provide a comprehensive view from a local, state and federal perspective of what it takes for business owners to become successful. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson is serving her 11th term representing the 30th Congressional District of Texas.

An economic divide is growing in our cities generation be lost while we wait for the inevitable explosions? The gulf between the realities of our cities and the foolishness of our politics has seldom been wider. Consider gun violence. Over the Fourth of July weekend, Chicago surpassed 200 homicide deaths for the year. On that weekend alone, 10 people were killed and several dozen wounded in gun violence, including 5- and 7-year-old boys. The only grim salvation in the savage toll is that the city’s year-to-date homicide rate is rising at a somewhat slower rate than last year.

By Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

What is the plan for our nation’s cities? Are they simply to simmer with a growing divide between the affluent financial district and the impoverished slums? Will another

While this goes on, the Illinois state Legislature is gearing up to overturn the state’s ban on carrying concealed weapons. The last of its kind, the concealed-weapons ban was ruled unconstitutional by a federal appeals court. Somehow, the conservative

The opinions expressed by

justices concluded that the Second Amendment, which provided constitutional protection for state militias, now prohibits citizens from deciding to ban concealed weapons as part of cracking down on gun violence. The gulf between the reality on the ground and the crackpot ideology of the right-wing activist judges could not be greater. Consider the economy. The youth unemployment rate in the U.S. is the highest it’s been since World War II. The Center for Labor Market Studies reports that 72 percent of Illinois teenagers —ages 16-19 — are unemployed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that less than 16 percent of black teenagers are employed. The official unemployment rate for AfricanAmerican teenagers — which doesn’t count those forced to take part-time jobs or who have given up

Don’t wait until a designated month to

— stood at 43.6 percent in June, according to the BLS. This is a human and national calamity. An entire generation of young people is coming out of school and ending up on the streets or on a couch in their parents’ home. Yet at the national level, Washington and Wall Street are telling us that this calamity — a deep and enduring depression in our urban areas — is the “new normal.” The Congress is cutting jobs, not taking action to create them. In Illinois, those on unemployment are suffering a 16.8 percent cut in benefits. The gulf between the elite politics in Washington and the realities facing young people in our urban areas could not be greater. SEE JACKSON, Page 8

Birthday of Nelson Mandela is reason to celebrate

Rep. Helen Giddings

July 18th North Texans will join the world to salute one of history’s most revered human rights activists, South Africa’s Nelson Mandela. Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years for his efforts to end South African apartheid. Prisoner 46664 (Nelson Mandela) spent much of that time in the Robben Island facility. Following his release, in South Africa’s first free election, he was voted President of the new democratic country. In 2009, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared July 18th as Nelson Mandela International Day. State Representative Helen Giddings is proudly leading the effort in Texas this year. Helen is the Honorary Consul from South Africa to Texas. South African Ambassador to the United States, The Honorable Ebrahim Rasool, has appointed Ms. Giddings to head up the celebration. The day is called, “It’s in Your Hands” and will encourage a call to service for all Texans. Everyone is asked to volunteer PAGE 7

67 minutes of their day, on July 18th, to volunteer to help others. For 67 years the Nobel Peace prize winner, Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. Here in North Texas the day will be filled with public service followed by a rousing celebration and salute to organizations and volunteers at

the State Fair Hall of State in Dallas. The celebration is designed to inspire all people to embrace the values shared by Nelson Mandela. Those offering tribute will include John Young, CEO of Energy Future Holdings, Dr. Daniel Podolsky, President of UT Southwestern, Becky Moeller, President of Texas AFL CIO, Rev. Gerald Britt Vice President of CitySquare, and Artist Viola Delgado.

WHAT EVERY TEENAGE BOY WANTS AND THEIR PARENTS NEED TO KNOW P.O.T. Boys Experience Takes You into His Mind and Heart DALLAS, TX - There's an art to raising a responsible and well-adjusted teenage boy, and there's an art to surviving those often turbulent years. Not his survival--yours. As a parent, teacher, minister, social worker, or any adult with a vested interest in the development of a teenage boy, your health and emotional well-being often are put at risk. As you struggle to make informed decisions, you quickly realize how little you know about the teen being ushered into adulthood. Hosted by Pastor Rickie G. Rush and the Inspiring Body of Christ Church, the P.O.T. Boys Experience is a three-day event that takes you into the mind and heart of your not-soaverage teenage boy. P.O.T. Boys is an acronym for "Parents of Teenage Boys." Research shows that during an 8year period, adults who raise teenagers deal with stressors that can lead to life-threatening conditions. "The kids aren't dying, the parents are," says Pastor Rush. The growing tornado strikes from ages 12-19. Issues ranging from physical disabilities to sexual confusion, from low self-esteem to hyper over-achievement plague the

teen at this age. As a parent or stakeholder in the teen's life, you are left devastated. In the aftermath, all you can do is survey the damage and rebuild on the foundation that's left. You are the foundation! "The more you know about who you are raising, the more equipped you are to survive the storm, "says Pastor Rush. "We're going to bring our audience in and lock them into a teenager's world, and it's going to be uncomfortable." To keep the audience stimulated and captivated, the event's unique visual atmosphere submerges participants deep inside the teenager's head. Designed to encourage, motivate, and inspire, the P.O.T. Boys Experience brings a shocking awareness to the adults in the teen's life. The survival skills and parenting techniques presented help the participants gain a greater understanding of what makes their boy tick. Because of the explicit nature of the subject matter, this event is intended for mature audiences only. The P.O.T. Boys Experience runs August 15-17, 2013 at the Inspiring Body of Christ Church, 7701 S. Westmoreland Rd., Dallas, TX 75232. None of this is inevitable. None of it is an act of God. These realities are the result of policy choices, of values and power expressed in policy. This cannot continue without a reckoning. If we choose not to invest in the young, we will pay dearly as they grow older. If we choose to starve the schools of poor children of color, we will suffer when they become adults without skills. If we choose to let companies stash profits abroad without taxes, we will lack the resources we need to build a strong economy at home. PAGE 8

!

What is clear is that Wall Street, Washington and the conservative judges feel that they can embrace this new normal without paying any price. These policies will not be changed by those who profit from them. They will only be changed if those who are victimized by them make it clear that they will not “adjust and accept.” The young, the unemployed, the poor, the abandoned urban communities must make their voices heard. Change will come only if they force the elites to face reality, not ignore it.

Statement by Congressman Marc Veasey regarding vote on Farm Bill WASHINGTON, DC – The following is a statement from Congressman Marc Veasey (D) Texas after voting on the FARM Bill (HR 2642) legislation that fails to include reauthorization of nutrition programs including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). "Yesterday, the House took action on a 600-page bill that violated the House Republican "three day" rule, of posting legislation for all to read, shattered over 50 years of bipartisan cooperation, and omitted nutrition assistance funding for the nation’s most important anti-hunger program, SNAP, which is

essential to feeding our children, people with disabilities, seniors and lowincome households.” “Republicans should be ashamed, to move forward and pass a bill that does not include SNAP funding. To move forward and pass a bill that does not include this funding is an insult to the American people and abandonment of the most vulnerable of our country including the 1.5 million Dallas and Tarrant county SNAP-participating households.”

is yet another display of House Republicans’ unwillingness to work across party lines and produce legislation that can be passed in both chambers.” “The American people and residents of the 33rd Congressional district expect and deserve more. I'm

extremely disappointed, Americans deserve better from Republican leadership. This is not what the American people deserve. I commend President Obama for indicating his plans to veto this one-sided legislation.”

In our library "BLACK HISTORY IN A NUTSHELL" REVEALS LITTLE KNOWN FACTS (AND ARTIFACTS) Black History in a Nutshell by author Allen J.Z. Shabazz is a unique publication that reveals the truth about Black history. The book has 10 pages of unique photographs of ancient artifacts and sculptures rarely seen by the public, and such artifacts are from museums from around the world. This book also has 158 pages of documentation that prove the author's following assertions: * The planet earth was a world of all black people from the beginning of 66 trillion B.C. to 4,000 B.C. There were no white people (Europeans) on earth prior to 4,000 B.C., only blacks. Egypt, Greece, Rome, Babylon, Carthage and all ancient societies were first societies of all black people. In ancient times Europeans migrated into societies of all black people, and such societies went from all black to mulatto to all white. * Pre-history is a word invented by white historians to describe the world before whites (Europeans) came on the planet earth. America was first founded by the black African Moors from Mali West Africa. African Moors founded

the Continental United States (Iroquois League of Nations) American government from 1312 A.D. to 1774 A.D., and in 1774, the European colonists separated from the African Moors in America, and the British, and then the white American colonists formed the American government based on religious and racial bigotry. The African Moors ruled the world from Spain from 711 A.D. to 1492 A.D., and in 1312 A.D., they transferred their brilliant society of Spain to America. Black History in a Nutshell also gives historical facts about the magnificent presence of blacks in the world and in America, that according to Shabazz, has been purposely covered up by

Support Black -owned bookstores

racist European and white American historians for over 200 years. In the book, Shabazz insists that Blacks were space travelers prior to 10,000 B.C., and the black Egyptians wrote designs of airplanes and space-ships on their walls revealing the black man始s pre-historic space travels. In the book, he tells how the Canadians found a mask of an ancient black space traveler in Canada in 1879, and he includes a picture of that artifact in the book. Shabazz also insists that a white historian by the name of Roland Dixon was blackballed when he revealed the African presence in America as the aboriginal

Indians in his book "Racial History of Man" (1923). The book also supports Shabazz's belief that after 1492, the Spanish expelled the African Moors from Spain for religious and racial reasons, and they conspired to overthrow the Moorish government in America after the voyage of Columbus. From 1492 to the present, European and white American historians have been covering up the true history of blacks which they have in their museums and private collections. Shabazz seeks to reveal that hidden information in his book Black History In A Nutshell, which is available for purchase on www.BlackHistoryShell.com or www.Amazon.com

At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
