Message to the People... Mrs. Coleman’s family members shared information about their matriarch. It’s always nice to hear of people paying tribute to a loved one because we know folks can sure tear one another down. Mrs. Coleman turns 100 soon, I bet she has plenty of stories she could share and hopefully her family members are seizing the opportunity.

Women must have access to the Health Care necessary to prevent unwanted pregnancies By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
Re c e n t l y, t h e Te x a s Legislature approved an alarming bill that would ban abortion after 20 weeks with only narrow exceptions. The bill would shut down many health clinics. Yet, the unrelenting attacks by Republicans on women’s choices have hit a nerve, and women across Texas are standing up to protect their rights in staggering numbers. The actions of Republican lawmakers are insincere and will hinder women’s access to health care. If Republicans truly wanted to reduce abortions in Texas, they would invest in reproductive health care and comprehensive sex education across the state. Yet the anti-choice legislation could forcibly close three dozen licensed health centers in Texas where women receive reproductive health ser vices, cancer screenings and abortions.
I am not pro-abortion, but I do believe a woman should be a b l e t o m a ke intensely personal decisions about a pregnancy with the counsel of a d o c t o r, the support of family members, and reliance on her faith------without interference of politicians.

Wo m e n who are knowledgeable about reproductive health and have access to contraception are more likely to a void unwanted pregnancies, precluding the need for many abortions. Texas Republicans have not connected the dots. Instead of supporting access to r e p r o d u c t i v e h e a l t h c a r e , Republicans chose to cut the
These cuts were projected to cause 284,000 women to lose access to family planning services and add $273 million in costs to taxpayers due to unplanned pregnancies in Texas. Texas has the fifth highest teen pregnancy rate of any state in the country, but Republicans have consistently opposed one of the best tools we have to reduce teen pregnancy: comprehensive sex education. These programs are demonstrably effective in helping youth delay sexual activity, reduce the number of sexual partners, and increase the use of contraception.
Family Growth found that teens who received comprehensive sex education were 50 percent less likely to get pregnant than teens who received abstinence-only education. T h e r e f u s a l o f Te x a s Republicans to allow women to access education, receive reproductive health care, and m a ke d e c i s i o n s a b o u t t h e i r personal health defies reason, science and is unconstitutional. It is truly unacceptable. Re p u b l i c a n s s h o u l d b e working to expand, rather than curb family planning services and sex education. I hope Republicans in the state legislature have a change of heart. Women in Texas deserve better. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson is serving her 11th term representing the 30th Congressional District of Texas.

Questioning the Zimmerman Verdict by John Fullinwider What is a person of conscience to make of the verdict of not guilty in the trial of George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin?
Did George Zimmerman call the police and describe Trayvon Martin as being like the "punks" that "always get away"? Did Zimmerman pursue Trayvon in his van and then on foot, armed with a handgun? Did Zimmerman pursue Trayvon even after the police dispatcher told him, "We don't need you to do that"? Did Zimmerman identify himself as a "neighborhood watch volunteer" when Trayvon asked him, "Why are you following me?" Did Zimmerman pull his gun and shoot Trayvon, after pursuing the teenager, after the police told him not to, after Zimmerman failed to identify himself in any way, after Zimmerman and the teenager engaged in a brief struggle? Is a young man, aged 17 years, dead from the bullet that
Zimmerman fired? Is this not a crime? Is it not a crime to shoot a young African American man? Is it not a crime to kill a young African American man after stalking him on a rainy night, with a concealed weapon at the ready? The killing of Trayvon Martin is a murder hiding in plain sight. It's plain that George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin to death. It's plain that Trayvon had done nothing criminal that night, plain that he had not harmed any person or intended to harm any person as he walked home with his hood up in the rain, and plain that he feared he was being stalked by a potential assailant. It's plain enough that Trayvon would have walked on home without anyone getting hurt if only Zimmerman had not followed him with a loaded pistol. It's plain to see that the lead Sanford police department did not want to arrest anyone for the murder of Trayvon Martin. It's to see plain that the lead Sanford police investigator of the murder became an advocate for the confessed killer. It's plain to see that a
The opinions expressed by
state official had to order the Sanford police after six weeks of inaction to arrest a suspect in the murder of Trayvon Martin. It's plain to see that the local prosecutor did not want to file any changes in the murder of Trayvon Martin. It's plain to see that the medical examiner did a sloppy job of the autopsy, that he cared so little for the victim of this murder that he couldn't be bothered to prepare for the trial, fumbling with his notes in an amateurish way. It's plain to see that the prosecutors finally assigned to the case did not prepare their witnesses for the trial. It's plain to see that lawyers for George Zimmerman demonized the victim in the murder, so that for the jury - which did not include a single African American - the victim of the murder was more threatening than the armed murderer himself. What are people of conscience to make of a country that has more citizens in prison than any other nation on earth and yet allows a confessed killer to walk

What changes will we make to the unjust, racist infrastructure that props up America's criminal court system, underfunded public schools, dishonest stock market, growing wealth and income inequality, and corrupted election process? The voice of our brother's blood cries out to us from the ground. How shall we honor the life of Trayvon Martin? With change or acquiescence? Dr. Haynes said, “We want to join the forces of good across this country who demand the U.S. Justice Department to file charges against George Zimmerman for violating the civil rights of Trayvon Martin. “However, we intend that this movement will jump start the repeal of unjust laws that have proven a particular travesty upon Black men and the poor in this nation. Specifically, we will actively challenge the Death Penalty, “The War on Drugs”, Mandatory Sentencing, Three Strikes and several other legal practices that have produced unprecedented numbers of men and women in the America’s prison population.

“We demand that judges be allowed to judge without handcuffs and that the state place more emphasis on prevention, drug counseling and rehabilitation than on feeding the “School to Prison Pipeline.” This is a local commencement of a new commitment to change the laws of this nation.” Victor Hugo once said; “If the soul is left in darkness, sins will be committed. The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but the one who causes the darkness.” That darkness can only be eradicated by active resistance to the laws and institution in this nation that harm rather than help the cause of justice.

WHAT EVERY TEENAGE BOY WANTS AND THEIR PARENTS NEED TO KNOW P.O.T. Boys Experience Takes You into His Mind and Heart DALLAS, TX - There's an art to raising a responsible and well-adjusted teenage boy, and there's an art to surviving those often turbulent years. Not his survival--yours. As a parent, teacher, minister, social worker, or any adult with a vested interest in the development of a teenage boy, your health and emotional well-being often are put at risk. As you struggle to make informed decisions, you quickly realize how little you know about the teen being ushered into adulthood. Hosted by Pastor Rickie G. Rush and the Inspiring Body of Christ Church, the P.O.T. Boys Experience is a three-day event that takes you into the mind and heart of your not-so-average teenage boy. P.O.T. Boys is an acronym for "Parents of Teenage Boys." Research shows that during an 8-year period, adults who raise teenagers deal with stressors that can lead to life-threatening conditions. "The kids aren't dying, the parents are," says Pastor Rush. “The growing tornado strikes from ages 12-19. Issues ranging from physical disabilities to sexual confusion, from low self-esteem to PAGE 8

hyper over-achievement plague the teen at this age. “As a parent or stakeholder in the teen's life, you are left devastated. In the aftermath, all you can do is survey the damage and rebuild on the foundation that's left. You are the foundation!” "The more you know about who you are raising, the more equipped you are to survive the storm, "says Pastor Rush. "We're going to bring our audience in and lock them into a teenager's world, and it's going to be uncomfortable." To keep the audience stimulated and captivated, the event's unique visual atmosphere submerges participants deep inside the teenager's head. Designed to encourage, motivate, and inspire, the P.O.T. Boys Experience brings a shocking awareness to the adults in the teen's life. The survival skills and parenting techniques presented help the participants gain a greater understanding of what makes their boy tick. Because of the explicit nature of the subject matter, this event is intended for mature audiences only. The P.O.T. Boys Experience runs August 15-17, 2013 at the Inspiring Body of Christ Church, 7701 S. Westmoreland Rd., Dallas, TX 75232. My husband wants me to go to work, despite the weather! Dear Gwendolyn:
Girl, I am so proud of you and I hope people who feel as your husband will be reminded that there are some people who do not put their life in danger. Let me tell you this: Those who have positions where they must be at work regardless of the weather usually go in before the snow begins. This is uncomfortable, but safe. There is no better place to be but at home when weather prevents you from going to work. You know…to enjoy popcorn and other favorite foods in a warm house, not to mention playing games and watching your favorite movies. But, that ideal situation is not always the case for those who must be on the job.
The next day after Christmas I stayed at home due to snow. My husband is angry because we are having a blizzard and the streets are covered with ice. In our library A Step-by-Step Guide to Having Your Representatives Become Accountable to You
In the new book, Accountability Citizenship, army veteran, former political insider, executive, and author, Stephen P. Tryon, reveals how the decades-old decline in U.S. voter participation has affected the country, and why it’s imperative that ordinary Americans get more involved in the business of Washington, D.C. Written from a nonpartisan perspective, Tryon presents the ultimate toolkit to empower individual citizens to participate in the American political process, and a step-by-step guide to restoring empowerment and efficiency in the government. In this fascinating, timely, and eye-opening book, Tryon also reveals: · The ways in which information is marketed and distributed today and how it discourages effective citizenship
JULY 19, 2013
· Why Americans must teach and learn the skills of information-age citizenship to achieve a civil and productive dialogue on today’s issues
Would you be interested in receiving a copy of the Accountability Citizenship? I look forward to hearing from you.
· Why Americans vote more in presidential elections and not in congressional elections
Stephen P. Tryon holds a B.S. from West Point and an M.A. in philosophy from Stanford University. Raised with seven siblings in a family where public service is a core value, he served as a soldier in the United States army for 21 years. At the end of his army career, he served as a legislative fellow for Senator Max Cleland, as well as a legislative assistant to the senior general at army headquarters in the Pentagon.
· How Americans can communicate and work with their Congressional representatives effectively · Why Americans must each hold their congressional representatives accountable for achieving meaningful goals that are specific, measurable, and achievable “This book is my prescription for Americans to reestablish control of our government using the procedures provided in our Constitution. I believe our solutions lie not in changing the information stream-the free press is an inviolable element of our republic-but rather in changing our behaviors for processing information that the stream conveys,” says Tryon. “In this age of information, we have to hold each other accountable—private citizen

and elected official alike— for adopting information-age behaviors in order to preserve a government that represents the will of the people.”
More recently, Tryon has worked as a Senior Vice President of Human Resources and International Business at Overstock.com for nine years. He has spent four years managing logistics and five years managing human resources and international business. A current resident of Salt Lake City, Utah, Tryon has one son Jake, and a dog Peanut. Fluent in English and able to converse in Spanish, Tryon also enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, outdoor recreation, exercising, reading, and writing.

At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve.â€? But what does voting “noâ€? and voting “yesâ€? mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa. August 17 The EPITOMES 5TH ANNUAL RED CARPET GALA & AWARD CEREMONY DALLAS CONVENTION CENTER 5P.M. RED CARPET BEGINS AT 3:30 PM FOR TICKETS - WWW.EPITOMEMAGAZINE.ORG O R1-888-705-7733 Featuring Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Myron Butler Brown Sugar Suite presents: Zo! "ManMade" Tour (producer/ keyboardist of The Foreign Exchange Music) w/special guest Carmen Rodgers & DJ Sheka Booker What is Brown Sugar Suite? This live music REVIVAL will take you on a journey back to when you first fell in love with GOOD music. Giving you the thrill of of real hiphop, jazz, R&B and neo-soul vibes. REMEMBER: "IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT... YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!" Lorenzo Ferguson, a.k.a "Zo!": producer/keyboardist of The Foreign Exchange Music Music was always present in and around the Ferguson house, which led to Zo! taking piano lessons at age 6… which he absolutely despised. The idea of working toward a Major League Baseball career served as the greatest inspiration through his teenage years much more so than the concept of practicing music. After his parents consistently pushed and encouraged him to stick with music, Zo! discovered a newfound passion by teaching himself how to play piano by ear by age 11. Zo! got his production start in 1992 when his parents brought home a Proteus MPS keyboard and a Brother PDC100 sequencer for him to figure out. Since then, he has emphasized the use of live instrumentation as the blueprint for his music while constantly looking to expand his sound with each album release. Carmen Rodgers “Rodgers lets the listener (and her man) know from the get go where things stand, opening with a defiant tone on the neo-soul midtempo, "Tell Your Story": "Tell your story at the door / 'cause I've heard it all before / and now I'm not so sure if I want this love anymore." By the time of the terrific next song, the acoustic gem "Home," Carmen is more reflective but just as resolved to end the relationship: "You say you want to come home / but home is where the heart lived / and I just want to move on / so should you."”— Chris Rizik, SoulTracks.com Where: The Prophet Bar / Historic Deep Ellum 2548 Elm St, Dallas, TX 75226 Time: Doors at 8:00pm & Show at 9:00pm
