City Officials encourage all residents living near this area to remain indoors and to bring their pets inside during spraying. City Staff will continue to monitor areas where mosquito breeding is mostly like to occur and encourage residents to protect themselves even after spraying by using insect repellent with DEET and to continue doing their part to prevent the spreading of the West Nile Virus by removing all areas of standing water, reporting all pools that are not well-maintained and abandoned homes where mosquitos are likely to breed to the Health and Code Enforcement Departments at 972-780-5041. For more information on how to prevent the West Nile Virus visit the City’s website at www.duncanville.com or dallascounty.org.

COLEMAN: Parallel Grace By Eva D. Coleman touch of humanity and reality for me personally, that it’s downright scary. The main character Cecil Gaines, played by Forest Whitaker, hands us his life on a silver platter. He served as a butler at The White House over many years, spanning eight presidencies. The film is based on the life of Eugene Allen and is adapted from an article that was written by Wil Haygood of the Washington Post. The film reminded me so much of my own Cecil. I’m still dealing with the death of my husband, Cecil Coleman, who lost his battle with cancer July 25, 2011. He too was committed to serving others, devoting his life to many years in the limousine industry.
Eva Coleman He was committed to serving others. His name was Cecil. A recent screening of Lee Daniels’ The Butler provided such a distinct
Throughout the film, clever editing provided many parallels, such as the scene that included a split screen of a civil-rights-era lunch counter sit-in alongside another of the
President and dignitaries being served at a White House dinner table. Emotions ran high throughout the movie as flashbacks provided ugly truths of what African Americans endured in fights for equality.
However, they often share a bond of respect with whom they serve that is unparalleled in other industries.
I was drawn into the countless number of scenes that simply focused on Cecil’s hands. Sometimes gloved in white. Sometimes placing gloves on. I envisioned my Cecil’s hands which I had seen many times placed on car door handles. Sometimes opening doors. Sometimes closing doors.
A well-known cast of characters, including Oprah Winfrey, give stellar performances. This film is full of many acting powerhouses, reinforcing the credibility it so deserves.
This film gives us a glimpse into those dynamics as well.
Oprah Winfrey and Forrest Whitaker
Always extending his hand to assist. He wouldn’t dare let me or his daughters open our own car doors! Those in the service industry are sometimes looked down upon by their own family members and outsiders. PAGE 4

Having gracefulness in serving others is a skill. Those who master that skill command attention. I imagine my Cecil standing and waiting outside a chariot in heaven, ready to extend his hand to ensure his passenger has the best experience ever. I encourage everyone to experience Lee Daniels’ The Butler. !

Help Keep Scholars In HBCUs! You Can Make a Difference ... Kicking Off Philanthropy Month With Savannah State University The Tom Joyner Foundation is kicking off a Philanthropy month by calling on all alumni, friends and supporters of Historically Black Colleges and Universities to join us and Allstate Insurance,to help raise scholarship funds as part of the fifth annual Allstate Quotes for Education program. For every person who receives an insurance quote from a participating Allstate agent and mentions Quotes for Education between August 1 and Nov. 30, 2013, Allstate will donate $10, up to a total donation of $150,000.
Participants in this program will also have a chance to vote for the HBCU of their choice to receive an additional $50,000 donation for scholarships. In 2012, Lincoln University of Missouri won the inaugural competition and distributed scholarship funds to 25 students. At HBCUs, where a greater percentage of students rely on parent loans, the volume fell 36 percent. This drop in funding translated to a loss of more than $150 million and forced an estimated 28,000 students to drop out of school due to lack of funds. To participate in the Quotes for Education program, HBCU supporters should visit www.allstate.com/represent to find a nearby participating agent or receive a quote online.

Ask Gwendolyn Baines
My Roommate’s Boyfriend Wrecked My Car Dear Gwendolyn: Last year, I moved off-campus and took in a roommate. After two months, my roommate moved in her boyfriend without discussing it with me. We had been friends since middle school. I had no idea she had changed. She drinks, does drugs, and steals not only my clothes, but also steals from department stores. I am up for a scholarship to graduate school in the east. One night while I was sick in bed with the flu, my roommate’s boyfriend went out in my car. He wrecked it and now I owe tons of money because he was not on my insurance. Gwendolyn, how can I make him pay the expenses incurred? I cannot afford an attorney. Ruth
AUGUST 9, 2013
Dear Ruth: Even if you could afford an attorney, you would only be throwing away your money. Think about it. Have him prosecuted. You also need to ask your roommate to leave. This may mean for you to move back on campus. You don’t want anything to jeopardize your scholarship. I know when you go east to graduate school, you will need your car. But don’t worry about it. If the university has housing for graduate students, live there. Then, soon look for an apartment off-campus. Living away from school is more of a graduate student’s lifestyle. When seeking offcampus housing, get within walking distance from school or take public transportation. Ruth, your car incident is not the top issue. Clear your house before you are involved in a drug bust. And remember, Ruth, people do change and not always for the better. That’s why when trying to become a success, friends (and sometimes family) are few. I know you have heard the statement, “It’s lonely at the top.” That is not true. There are people at the top and they all have ambition, goals, and high character. But if you don’t hurry and rid yourself from your roommate and her kind, making it to the top — won’t be your concern.

With her nationally syndicated advice column, she is now exposed to 15 million readers per week. "ManMade" Tour (producer/keyboardist of The Foreign Exchange Music) w/special guest Carmen Rodgers & DJ Sheka Booker What is Brown Sugar Suite? This live music REVIVAL will take you on a journey back to when you first fell in love with GOOD music. Giving you the thrill of of real hiphop, jazz, R&B and neo-soul vibes. REMEMBER: "IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT... YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!" Lorenzo Ferguson, a.k.a "Zo!": producer/ keyboardist of The Foreign Exchange Music Music was always present in and around the Ferguson house, which led to Zo! taking piano lessons at age 6… which he absolutely despised. The idea of working toward a Major League Baseball career served as the greatest inspiration through his teenage years much more so than the concept of practicing music. After his parents consistently pushed and encouraged him to stick with music, Zo! discovered a newfound passion by teaching himself how to play piano by ear by age 11. Zo! got his production start in 1992 when his parents brought home a Proteus MPS keyboard and a Brother PDC100 sequencer for him to figure out. Since then, he has emphasized the use of live instrumentation as the blueprint for his music while constantly looking to expand his sound with each album release. Carmen Rodgers “Rodgers lets the listener (and her man) know from the get go where things stand, opening with a defiant tone on the neo-soul midtempo, "Tell Your Story": "Tell your story at the door / 'cause I've heard it all before / and now I'm not so sure if I want this love anymore." By the time of the terrific next song, the acoustic gem "Home," Carmen is more reflective but just as resolved to end the relationship: "You say you want to come home / but home is where the heart lived / and I just want to move on / so should you."”— Chris Rizik, SoulTracks.com

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
