Tulisoma 2013 Tulisoma, Swahili for "we read", is a community-based literary festival promoting literacy and the arts in the South Dallas/Fair Park area. Founded in 2003, by former City Councilman Leo V. Chaney, Jr., and Dr. Harry Robinson, President and CEO of the African American Museum, the goal of Tulisoma is to create a dynamic event tailored to engage local families, avid readers, aspiring writers and visitors to the city. Councilwoman Carolyn R. Davis recognizes the importance of reading and literacy and has worked to continue the tradition. This year’s program, August 30 and 31 will feature veteran journalist Bob Ray Sanders and actress Lynn Whitfield.

REPRESENT: Show Your School Pride, Help Raise $150,000 for HBCUs Allstate and the Tom Joyner Foundation are working together to engage students, alumni and supporters of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country to raise scholarship funds as part of the fifth annual Allstate Quotes for Education program. For every person who receives an insurance quote from a participating Allstate agent and mentions Quotes for Education between August 1 and Nov. 30, 2013, Allstate will donate $10, up to a total donation of $150,000. The funds will be donated to the Tom Joyner Foundation and earmarked for general scholarship funds to assist students attending HBCUs.
Ask Gwen Baines 11
For the second year, participants in this program will also have a chance to vote for the HBCU of their choice to receive an additional $50,000 donation for scholarships. In 2012, Lincoln University of Missouri won the inaugural competition and distributed scholarship funds to 25 students. To participate in the Quotes for Education program, HBCU supporters should visit allstate.com/represent to find a nearby participating agent or receive a quote online. Supporters are then encouraged to vote for the HBCU of their choice.

“We know that cuts to student loan programs over the past few years are hurting students all over the country, but these cuts are particularly detrimental to students attending HBCUs,” said Cheryl Harris, senior vice president at Allstate. “Allstate and the Tom Joyner Foundation are passionate about helping these students pursue their dreams as we continue to support programs like Quotes for Education.” “We are dedicated to helping shape our future through the growth of today’s students,” said Tom Joyner, chairman and founder of the 14-year-old foundation bearing his name. “Every dollar we contribute inspires ambition and helps a student reach their goals and their potential.” NOTE: We can’t ask others to do for us what we won’t do for ourselves. Think about the valiant men and women who pinched pennies to establish these great institutions. Won’t you please show your support?

remind you to share your story:
In just one week, I will join thousands of Americans in our nation's capital to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. As I think about all of us standing there to commemorate the day that Whitney M. Young, Jr., A. Phillip Randolph and so many other civil rights legends came together for "jobs and freedom" and where Dr. King delivered his historic "I have a dream" speech, I want to

Dear Doris:
Ask Gwendolyn Baines
My cousin had a baby by my fiance' Dear Gwendolyn: I have been going with a man for 16 years. We have been engaged for the past two years this month. We have no children. This is my problem: He recently told me that my cousin's 10 year old son is his. I cried and insisted on a DNA test. Guess what? It's true. He told me that he has been going with my cousin for the past 11 years all the time he was involved with me. Oh by the way, we have lived together for the past 15 years. Yes, it took 14 years for him to propose marriage. I have been happy with him. I have worked the entire time in a high paying career. Because of the recent discovery should I give him up? Doris
Let me tell you this: Time moves rapidly and does not stand still for anyone. I want you to search the laws for your state regarding ‘common law' marriage. However, if your fiancé has nothing then sorry lady, you will get nothing. I congratulate you for having a good career. At least you have not been a kept woman. If you leave him, you can financially survive and believe me, you do need to leave him. Do not focus on the years gone by. Focus now on going forward with your life finding happiness within yourself. I know to understand your cousin's affair with your man is hurtful. But maybe she and your fiancé are compatible you know...having a lack of principles. Not only will you need to part from your fiancé, but also put distance between you and your cousin. Sometimes with family you have to step back, go around, go under, or go over the bridge of unfaithfulness and wrongdoings. Doris, let me tell you something else: You asked if you should give him up. Think about it. It seems you never had him --- to begin with.

"ManMade" Tour (producer/ keyboardist of The Foreign Exchange Music) w/special guest Carmen Rodgers & DJ Sheka Booker What is Brown Sugar Suite? This live music REVIVAL will take you on a journey back to when you first fell in love with GOOD music. Giving you the thrill of of real hiphop, jazz, R&B and neo-soul vibes. REMEMBER: "IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT... YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!" Lorenzo Ferguson, a.k.a "Zo!": producer/keyboardist of The Foreign Exchange Music Music was always present in and around the Ferguson house, which led to Zo! taking piano lessons at age 6… which he absolutely despised. The idea of working toward a Major League Baseball career served as the greatest inspiration through his teenage years much more so than the concept of practicing music. After his parents consistently pushed and encouraged him to stick with music, Zo! discovered a newfound passion by teaching himself how to play piano by ear by age 11. Zo! got his production start in 1992 when his parents brought home a Proteus MPS keyboard and a Brother PDC100 sequencer for him to figure out. Since then, he has emphasized the use of live instrumentation as the blueprint for his music while constantly looking to expand his sound with each album release. Carmen Rodgers “Rodgers lets the listener (and her man) know from the get go where things stand, opening with a defiant tone on the neo-soul midtempo, "Tell Your Story": "Tell your story at the door / 'cause I've heard it all before / and now I'm not so sure if I want this love anymore." By the time of the terrific next song, the acoustic gem "Home," Carmen is more reflective but just as resolved to end the relationship: "You say you want to come home / but home is where the heart lived / and I just want to move on / so should you."”— Chris Rizik, SoulTracks.com Where: The Prophet Bar / Historic Deep Ellum 2548 Elm St, Dallas, TX 75226 Time: Doors at 8:00pm & Show at 9:00pm

Toll Road are brought to the area. Some construction has begun with the demolition of homes to follow later this year. At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
