It has been said that people are forgotten with time. I don’t forget those people who have been good to me or people I love. John Arthur Woods was such a person. I met John Woods (for some reason, I always called him by his first and last name) when we were in leadership positions with our respective alumni associations. John Woods was a proud Southern University graduate and of course, I’m from the phenomenal Florida A&M University! Let me tell you a little about John Woods. Born in Shreveport, LA, he attended Captain Shreve High School where he helped organize the Black Studies Association and was its first president. He left Shreveport for Baton Rouge where he attended Southern University. After graduation, his loyalty to his alma mater continued. He served in numerous capacities, including as a national officer. When he moved to Dallas, John Woods was very active, spreading the SU message and recruiting students. If memory serves me, he was probably the longest serving president of the Dallas Chapter of the Southern University Alumni Association. There is a scholarship named in his honor and students can apply at www.suafdallas.com. John Woods was one of the HBCU representatives who gathered at Smokey John’s BBQ, on Lemmon and Mockingbird in Dallas, for the meeting that established the Dallas Metroplex Council of Black Alumni Associations. That organization, the first of its kind, has a noble goal of promoting unity and improving relations among alumni organizations from HBCUS, and promoting and increasing attendance at HBCUs. We had many meetings and a lot of fun times back in the formative years. John Woods was never alone. He usually had his trusty sidekicks and golf buddies Southern Alum Thurston “T.J.” Jones and Tuskegee Alums Len Matthews and Fred Ratcliff. John Woods would be glad to know that the DMCBAA is going strong and that SU is a strong force in the organization that he also served as president of. There was an activist side to John Woods also. He was very supportive of the efforts of Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price. A member of the Warriors, John Woods was active with the Dallas Community Leadership Luncheon and he supported efforts to increase Black participation in the media, at the police department and wherever disparities were apparent. In those early meetings to establish KwanzaaFest and the Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-athon, John Woods was there. He was married to Mary, and had two children: Jada and Jonathan. Following the death of his wife, he returned to Baton Rouge to do something many HBCU alums dream of -- working for their alma mater. John Woods died on August 27, 2003. At this funeral, I talked about what a great friend he was and also his love for his alma mater. I sincerely believed then and now that if every HBCU alum was as dedicated and supportive of their college as John Woods was of his, many of our problems at our schools, in our homes and in our communities would be solved! It’s been 10 years but I still remember my friend!

Governor Perry reverses course on Obamacare By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
Texas Governor, Rick Perry, one of the boldest critics of the Affordable Care Act, is now requesting $100 million in healthcare funding from the Obama administration. He claims that federal funds are needed to help people in the state with disabilities. The governor should realize that 6.3 million uninsured Texans are also “disabled” and if they become ill or are injured they will suffer, and the state’s taxpayers will be forced to pick up the tab. Twenty-six percent of all Texans have no healthcare coverage, the highest percentage of any state in the nation. Perhaps Governor Perry should visit with fellow Republican Governor Rick Scott of Florida. Once a fervent opponent of the Affordable Healthcare Act, Scott is

The Act is fair and it makes absolutely good sense for Texas and the nation. Preventive health care practices are promoted, doctors and hospitals have incentives to coordinate patient care and millions of insured people in our state will have the peace of mind that comes with having quality health coverage. When Congress enacted the Social Security Act in 1935, establishing retirement insurance for workers in America, there were critics that argued that the federal government was meddling in state’s rights, and that the program was unnecessary. Some 78 years later they have been proven to be on the wrong side of the then national debate. Governor Perry should review that history and reconsider his position. I believe that in years to come the Affordable Care Act will be as popular as Social Security.
Dallas Peace Center: No U.S Bombing of Syria www.DallasPeaceCenter.org
With another apparent use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government against the rebels that has killed civilians, the White House is poised to take military action in Syria. The Dallas Peace Center will hold a protest against U.S attack on Syria at the Earle Cabell Federal Building 1100 W. Commerce in downtown Dallas from 4:00- 6 :00 PM, the day after the bombing begins. Bill Maxwell, Co-chair of the Dallas Peace Center's Middle East Peace Committee (MEPC) said,: " We oppose military intervention and military support in Syria. We support massive efforts for a political solution and continued humanitarian aid." Americans strongly oppose the use of troops in another war in the Middle East. The U.S. would likely seek NATO support in an air campaign with bombing and missile strikes. If the goal of the bombing was to destroy the capacity of the Syrian government to use chemical weapons, that would be hard to achieve. Experts believe that we do

throwing gasoline on the fire and does not encourage a political settlement, which is the only way the violence will end. !
With over 100,000 deaths, 4 million people displaced from their homes and the likely use of chemical weapons, the U.S. does need to take urgent action. History proves that the military approach will not bring a solution. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey mentioned recently that the solution is not a military one. Hence, the U.S. needs to continue working with Russia to hold the repeatedly delayed peace talks and must add all key regional actors to those talks. Other diplomatic avenues need to be traveled to produce a negotiated settlement. The U.S. should support the International Criminal Court in arresting those committing war crimes such as the use of chemical weapons. And lastly, continued humanitarian aid and aid to refugees is needed to assist civilians. MEPC member Don Dillard said, "With the 50th anniversary of Reverend Martin Luther King's "I have a dream speech" this week, we know the power of nonviolence. Only nonviolent acts will solve the conflict within Syria."

Obedience... By James A. Washington Jesus says, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.” John 14:23. It seems to me that what is of importance here is recognizing the difference between “having” to obey and “wanting” to obey. In our world, when parents enforce rules and discipline, the desire is that a relationship of respect and love will develop and the children will respond accordingly, whether the parents are within earshot or not; whether it will get back to them or not. Prayerfully, the hope is that the child will want to comply with an understanding that in the end, he or she will be better for it. If all one does is obey rules because of consequences and punishment, then rules generally get thrown out the window, when the rule maker is not around. I guess what I’m trying to say and what Jesus is alluding to is when grounded in love, people want to respond favorably, if for no other reason than to look good in the eyes of the person they are trying to impress. What Christ is saying is the same thing that many a mother and a father want to believe about their kids. If we’re honest with ourselves, we all know what behavior would upset Mom and Dad. We know this because they have spent a lifetime (yours and mine) instilling values and integrity into our character and hopefully into our very natures. You might still do things they wouldn’t condone, but you certainly know the difference between right and wrong because of your upbringing. at upbringing, if nurtured in the spirit of love, reveals to all of us the source and nature of the consequences. e discipline that results from wrongdoing and wrong thinking comes from one place, love. If you can’t remember this, let me remind you that it’s that “this is going to hurt me more than it will you” thing. Christ is merely reminding us that if you love Him, then obey His rules, His teachings, which were given to us out of the love of the Father. Remember where they come from and why. Our desire to please should override our fear of discipline. My point is that obedience to God has so much more to do with wanting to do the right thing for the right reason, than doing the right thing because it is the law. One is the result of relationship, while the other is the result of fear of consequence. roughout scripture, Jesus constantly refers to the love of the Father. How many of you do what your mother would expect of you and she’s been dead for years? How many of you find yourselves passing along those same expectations to your children and are ready to pounce if you see disobedience? Why? I submit that you do this because of the relationship you have or had with your parents. is relationship thing serves us all well when we contemplate obedience. It’s a love thing. It’s a “want to” thing. “I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.” John 14:30-31. To obey should be an act of love. As children this might be difficult to understand. As Christian adults, it shouldn’t be. Our goal should be to recognize God’s love for us and simply do our best to return it; act accordingly so to speak. PAGE 7

‘Married to Commitment’ reinforced ‘humility, patience’ in me By Donald Lee I was just reflecting on an interview I did with my former employer (e Advocate newspaper in Baton Rouge) about the future bestselling book my friend and prayer partner Bre Eaton and I released a couple of years ago. In that interview, columnist and pal Terry Robinson asked me an awesome question. He asked me whether our book, “Married to Commitment,” ministered to me in any way. And if so, what was the one thing that I learned from the book. My response: "More humility and patience." e book is about being humble, recognizing that it is God who gives promotions (whether in the workplace or in relationships). And it's about being patient.
The Allstate Tom Joyner Family Reunion® to celebrate Family
Many divorces occur or many marriages are strained because of a lack of patience on the part of at least one of t h e t w o p e r s on s . We , generally speaking, get tired of waiting on God to send us our Ruth or our Esther or our Boaz or our Isaac, to the point where we succumb to the pressures of impatience (like Abraham and Sarah did) and we (not God) produce Ishmaels in our lives rather than waiting on God to present us our Isaacs. Some of the biggest, most recognized, most influential pastors out there today oen say: "Most divorces occur over money." I've always contended that “money” was not (and perhaps never
was) the reason for so many failed marriages. I contend that those marriages fail because of “ s e l fi s h n e s s ,” “ s e l f centeredness,” “pride.” is — a selfish, haughty spirit — is the root cause of divorce. e money factor, I argue, is the fruit of the divorce. But the root of the divorce is the self-centeredness factor. In other words, money, if you will, is (how can I say it?) “the straw that broke the camel's back.” at one straw, alone, couldn't do it. But it's placed on top of all the other stuff. Successful, new marriages or relationships are birthed from honest, self-evaluations concerning what went wrong in previous ones.
all over the country will join Joyner and his celebrity friends for a weekend filled with stellar concerts, access to Universal Studios, Sea World and Islands of Adventure; interaction with celebrities and leaders, enlightening seminars, and endless activities for people of all ages inside the free expo that is open to the public.

Ask Gwendolyn Baines
I have found a ‘young’ man who loves me! Dear Gwen: Six months ago, I was in the process of building my house. One morning a construction worker delivered the kitchen cabinets. He accidentally ran his truck into the corner of my side porch. He agreed to fix it himself— begging me not to report the incident to his foreman. Gwendolyn, I am 65 and the man that is in love with me is 32. All my adult life I have been misused at work, by my family and people from all venues of life. Before meeting this man, I had come to the conclusion all

people were cruel and unkind. But, this man is perfect. —Leslie Dear Leslie: There is too much of an age difference. I suggest you end your relationship with this “perfect” man immediately. Let me tell you this: I strongly feel the accident was staged. Elderly women with money are prime prey to men with none. I want you to seriously think about your feelings. Too badly no one told you that the world will chew you up, spit you out, and stomp your body into the ground. People will treat you the way you allow them to do. Let no one cause you to have an unhappy day. Some people (especially family and coworkers) are so miserable the only joy they receive is when they have made others feel the same. Think about it. Whatever they say or do, ignore. Never stop to give thought to people who possess—an ignorant mind.
Gwen Gwendolyn Baines is a nationally renown author and lecturer, who in the last few years has added "syndicated advice columnist" to her lengthy credentials list. With her nationally syndicated advice column, she is now exposed to 15 million readers per week. The "Ask Gwendolyn Baines" advice column is distributed by the National Newspaper Publishers' Association (NNPA)-Washington, D.C.

On Wednesday, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and ThanksGiving Square hosted the “Let Freedom Ring!” bell-ringing ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The program was held at Thanks-Giving Square Chapel from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. CST. The ceremony included a reading of “I Have a Dream” speech by leaders of different faiths, and a keynote
address by NAACP State President Gary Bledsoe. “It’s now a false sense that it’s a fight between blacks and whites,” said Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. “It’s not. It’s a fight between justice and injustice. Our battle is as strong today as it was 50 years ago. It has as much to do with ideology as it does with the color of our skin. BRIDGE Lacrosse celebrates five years Impacting kids in North Texas BRIDGE Lacrosse will commemorate its 5th year serving boys and girls in the Dallas community with a birthday party at Trinity Groves in West Dallas on September 10th. The party kicks off at 6:30 pm and guests will enjoy an evening of food, cake and cocktails as well as a silent auction and wine pull. BRIDGE Lacrosse is a small, sports-based, youth development nonprofit, serving the urban communities of North Texas. BRIDGE’s mission is to enrich nontraditional lacrosse communities
by developing after-school programs and building healthy student athletes. BRIDGE Lacrosse has impacted the lives of hundreds of student athletes in both South and West Dallas, providing hours of high quality lacrosse instruction with the help of high school volunteers and volunteer coaches. “Throughout my experience with BRIDGE Lacrosse I have seen many young, urban student-athletes impacted by this organization. We’ve made tremendous strides in their development and outlook on life through the camaraderie this sport provides,” said David Higbee BRIDGE Lacrosse executive director. “While the organization impacts the lives of the student-athletes it serves, our volunteers are impacted in a different way as their lives are enhanced by sharing their time and talents with these athletes.” BRIDGE Lacrosse provides programming throughout the year. participate in fall ball, which includes weekly practice and a tournament following the eight week season. A similar developmental season is hosted for BRIDGE’s West Dallas partners. In the spring, athletes engage in healthy competition and learn the responsibilities of being a student athlete. Through partnerships, BRIDGE oversees teams that compete in a 12 week season. BRIDGE Lacrosse teams even compete against long established North Texas lacrosse programs. During the summer, BRIDGE collaborates with its partners to provide enriching programs. BRIDGE introduces lacrosse to a variety of boys and girls of all ages and skill levels. This way, BRIDGE maximizes its outreach while also providing an enriching activity for its partners. Over the years, BRIDGE Lacrosse has hosted its annual Going for the Goal fundraiser which raises the funds needed to provide the

programming and equipment necessary to fulfill the organization’s needs and objectives each year. This year, in lieu of hosting Going for the Goal, BRIDGE Lacrosse invites the North Texas lacrosse community as well as the larger Dallas community to join in celebrating the great strides that BRIDGE Lacrosse has made throughout its five years. The birthday bash is a great way to support BRIDGE Lacrosse programs and learn about the organization and other ways to contribute to its mission. Guests will delight in the atmosphere provided by Trinity Groves, Dallas’ new restaurant, retail, art and entertainment destination at the base of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in West Dallas. “I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees.
