Message to the people...

INSIDE I MESSENGER March 9, 2012

Last week was my father’s 85th birthday. It has been a little over seven years since his transition and there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about Joseph Smith. He was my first love, the first man that I “flirted” with and batted my eyes at. There was nothing sexual about our exchanges at all. I wanted something and I would try to charm Daddy into letting me have it. Many times I got what I wanted and if he said, “no,” I would try to persuade him into changing the “no” into a “yes.” Sometimes I was successful and then other times he would say, “alright now, I told you ‘no,’ so you better get somewhere and sit down.”

Cynthia McKinney speaks

6

He wasn’t going to do anything if I didn’t get somewhere and sit down, but I didn’t want to test him either. Cheryl Smith While my efforts worked on Daddy often, Mother was a different story. Daddy was good for saying, “that’s my beautiful daughter,” and Mother was quick with the, “ I brought you into this world and I’ll take you out!” James Brown’s hit, “Papa don’t take no mess” was more appropriate for Mother.

Askia Muhammad to be honored

7

Daddy wanted me to always respect myself and he was quick to tell me not to let any man put his hands on me. He also had quite a few other lessons for me. Still today I try to honor his memory and while there are times when I may have a questionable act or action, believe me I am reassessing the situation and having a “Joe Smith moment.” In the past two months, there have been so many deaths of loved ones. I’ve also talked to so many who are experiencing losses. The only thing I am comfortable saying is, “I am sorry for your loss.” The response is usually, “thanks.”

The Links National President in Dallas

9

On more than one occasion I have the conversation about what is appropriate to say when someone experiences a loss. Sure I know folks are often at a loss and have no idea what to say. So what do you say? Do you tell the person that their loved one is “in a better place,” or “you won’t feel the pain as time passes on because time heals all wounds.” Well, there’s something to say about that “scar” that remains as a reminder.

Amelia Boynton Robinson at Bloody Sunday

Maybe it’s just me, but I would rather hear nothing at all than for someone to tell me how I should grieve. Just as it is hard to tell someone how they should grieve, it is even harder to tell them how to live, especially now when folks really are not feeling like hearing unsolicited advice. As I think about Joe Smith, and how he could never get any of my boyfriends’ names correct (he would find a hard time remembering a name as simple as “Tommy”) or how he loved wearing tailor-made suits and silk underwear; I am grateful that I showed my love while he was here to enjoy it.

12

Too often that is not the case because we major in the minors. We let the small things ruin relationships and then when the person is gone, we realize how insignificant those things really were. I guess there’s something to this “forgiveness” thing.

Is there someone you need to make things right with? I didn’t wait until I was looking at my father in a coffin to tell him I loved him. Also, I didn’t let anyone tell me how or when to love him or anyone else. That’s a problem we have with so many families today. Because of disputes between the parents, the children are brought into the fray and form opinions of a parent based on the utterances of the other parent. This is totally wrong! Sure I can think of numerous other occasions, but if there is ever a time when children should not be involved in grown folks business, it has to be when the parents are at odds with one another. Mothers need to stop saying negative things about their “baby’s daddy” and men should not say disparaging things about the women they impregnate. I don’t care if it was a one-night stand, or if she was a “quickie,” someone has to think about the children. I have to thank my mother for ensuring that I knew a father’s love. I wish every woman could know that feeling.

Johnson addresses Young Professionals

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson addressed presidents and chapter leaders of the National Urban League Young Professionals

– Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, recently addressed a group of National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYP) on the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) during their 9th Annual Legislative Policy Conference on Capitol Hill. In speaking with the group, Congresswoman Johnson noted:“If you want to do well, whether you become a researcher, inventor, leader, or have a great job, it is essential that your background has some part of STEM in it. Even just to take care of your family, you need to know some STEM. Knowledge of computer skills and technology is essential in today’s environment. Technology is ever evolving, and in order to see more minorities on the world stage in this field, we must acquire and polish our skill sets in STEM education.” Congresswoman Johnson was invited as a featured speaker at the National Urban League Young Professionals Conversation Event hosted with the National Urban League Policy Institute (NULPI). Under the Rotunda w/ Rep Barbara Mallory Caraway I have received many calls regarding the confusion on whether or not voters registration cards have expired and the eligibility of registered voters being able to vote. An email was distributed saying that the voter registration cards expired on December 31, 2011 and that everyone had to register or not be able to vote. The Texas Secretary issued a clarification on the issue. "As a result on on-going redistricting litigation the mailing of new voter registration certificates is delayed in some counties. All previously issued voter registration certificates expired on December 31, 2011, but only the card expired. The cards will be automatically be renewed. Only registered voters who have changed address or names need to contact their local voter registrar to update their registration or file a new application.” After many complaints from parents, educators and students regarding the 15 percent of their course grades. State Education commissioner Robert Scott agreed Friday, February 17, 2012 to a oneyear delay on enforcing a controversial law requiring that students' scores on the new standardized test count toward 15 percent of their course grades. The 15 percent rule will be suspended only one year and will return with the 2012-13 school year. However, some superintendents are expected to lobby to permanently scrap the requirement when lawmakers convene in their next regular session 2013. Dallas County Health and Human Services key strategy goals are: reduce the number of new HIV infections, increase access to care and improve health outcomes for people living with HIV and reduce HIVrelated health disparities. Dallas County currently has the highest infection in the state. Black males who sleep with men have the highest among men, Black heterosexual females rank highest among the female population in infection rates. Also, the health department is focusing on younger residents ages 13-24, since the data shows an increase in this age category. County Officials openly discussed the need to get school district officials involved. PAGE 4

Clayton holds Congressional Campaign Headquarters Opening DeSoto—Taj Clayton, candidate for the 30th Congressional District and first generation college graduate and Harvard Law School alum, celebrated the opening of his campaign office early Saturday morning at 1615 North Hampton Road in DeSoto, Texas. Over two hundred supporters and volunteers attended the open house, throughout the day. The headquarters opening kicked off the grassroots effort with phone banking and block walking. Clayton personally greeted each volunteer and shared his vision for the future, "Our community represents the greatest untapped resource in Texas, I'm running to make sure we reach our full potential—together." Clayton’s wife Tonika presented her husband to the crowd, and lovingly spoke of her husband’s intelligence, optimism and commitment to their community. While holding their newborn child Taj, Jr. in her arms, she also shared her personal experience with Clayton as a husband and father, attesting to his sincerity of heart and determination. “My parents taught me to love your neighbor as yourself,” said Clayton, “That basic biblical principal is why I’m in this race--because I love this community and I want to see it flourish.” “That’s my daddy!” cheered Daisha, his 6 year-old daughter, as Clayton concluded his informal remarks. There was excitement in the air with many bringing their whole families. “Taj is the real deal,” said North Oak Cliff resident, Sean Allen, “His heart is in the right place. He knows what it is to work hard and achieve the American dream. That means something to me and my family—it’s what our country needs.” Mr. Clayton is a candidate for the 30th Congressional District of Texas. He is an attorney at the Dallas firm Fish & Richardson. He is married to his college sweetheart, the former Tonika Cheek. They have three young children together. He is a graduate of both Harvard College and Harvard Law School. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

Expand, not suppress In Selma, Ala., on Sunday, I joined thousands of citizens marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, marking the 47th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the 1965 march and police riot that helped spark the passage of the Voting Rights Act. The march was not a memory to the past, but a protest of the present. In Alabama, conservatives are moving once more to suppress the vote, part of a concerted effort across the country to make it harder for the poor, the elderly and minorities to vote. Alabama’s voter ID law will require citizens to present photo identification at the polls. An Alabama immigration law requires police to determine citizenship status during traffic stops, essentially exposing Latino citizens and non-citizens to constant harassment. Photo ID laws have been introduced or passed in at least 15 states. They discriminate against those who don’t have driver’s licenses — disproportionately poor, elderly and minorities. Nationally they could disenfranchise about 5 million voters. Several states are also pushing legislation to restrict voter registration and to limit early voting. The current drive is the greatest insult to the Voting Rights Act since it was passed 47 years ago. Republicans argue that the voting laws are needed to counter fraudulent voting. But they have produced zero evidence of organized efforts to tip elections with fraudulent voters. The laws, as noted by the Rev. Al Sharpton, one of the march organizers, are a “solution looking for a problem.” On Bloody Sunday 47 years ago, Americans saw nonviolent African-American protesters brutalized in a police riot. The nation’s conscience was touched and Washington responded, as President Johnson pushed through the Voting Rights Act. Protests against current efforts to suppress the vote have only just begun. But they will build — and they will once more pose a moral challenge to America. Will Americans reward a party that is systematically seeking to make it harder to vote? Will they accept routine harassment of minorities because of their fears about immigration? Will the politics of division once more be effective? In the old South, whites feared that they would suffer with the end of segregation. Their privileges would be reduced; their economy would be upended. In fact, the civil rights movement’s victories opened the South to a new prosperity. Investment flowed in. Companies that would have not gone into a segregated South moved to Atlanta and other cities. It turned out that to hold African Americans in a ditch, whites had to stay down there with them. The end of segregation, the passage of voting rights, created new opportunity for all. But the old South did not die. The modern Republican Party was built on its infamous Southern strategy, appealing to whites in reaction to the passage of the civil rights laws. Now that strategy, which alienated African-American voters, seems to be replaying itself in the party’s harsh rhetoric and actions about the new wave of immigrants. The result may well alienate Latino and Asian-American voters. Worse, it means that one of America’s two major parties is increasingly devoted to finding ways to limit the vote rather than expand it. In fact, what we ought to have is a competition on how to ensure that every citizen can cast his or her vote easily. Automatic registration on birth, early voting, extended voting days, polls that are open on weekends and before and after work days — we should be having a competition on how to increase the vote, not on how to suppress it. Jesse L. Jackson

The Honorable Donald Payne WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Donald M. Payne (NJ-10) passed

away at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey of complications from colon cancer on March 6, 2012. His office released the following statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rep. Donald M. Payne. A native of Newark, New Jersey, Rep. Payne dedicated his life to serving the men, women and children of the 10th Congressional District. In addition to his service as a public school teacher in Newark and Passaic, Rep. Payne served as the first African-American President of the National YMCA. For 24 years, Rep. Payne traveled throughout the world serving as a calm and rational voice on issues impacting the social conditions of the global community. Rep. Payne used his senior position on the U.S. House of Representatives E d u c a t i o n a n d t h e Wo r k f o r c e Committee to advocate on behalf of children, working families and senior citizens. His top-priorities remained closing the achievement gap, providing equitable funding for public schools and making college and healthcare more affordable. As the highest ranked Democrat on the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Human Rights, Rep. Payne worked tirelessly to protect human rights and provide humanitarian aid to developing countries, particularly in Africa. He also served as a former Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus and most recent Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. New Jersey has lost a noble public servant, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Rep. Payne have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Rep. Payne once stated, ‘There is a lot of dignity in being able

to achieve things without having to create rapture.’ In accordance with his civil approach and global humanitarian efforts, Rep. Payne would want us to carry on by defending against injustice and protecting human rights so that all mankind can pursue the excellence of the human potential.” -----Congresswoman Eddie Bernice

news is a terrible loss for New Jersey and our Nation. Donald Payne was a valuable leader who dedicated his life to service and global advocacy for more than twenty years. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, staff, and constituents of the 10th Congressional District of New Jersey.” --Charles Stith, a former ambassador t o Ta n z a n i a i n t h e m C l i n t o n administration and currently director of the African Presidential Center at Boston University. Stith is traveling in Africa. He said, “Not only was Don Payne a friend; but someone I considered a role model. As a leader in the Congressional Black Caucus he was an American icon; as the leading Congressional voice on Africa he was an African son. It is ironic that I learn of his passing while I'm in Africa. In my work I'm crossing bridges he helped build.

Johnson released the following statement on the passing of Congressman Donald Payne: “I’m saddened to learn about the passing of my colleague Congressman Donald Payne. Congressman Payne lost his battle with cancer early this morning, and we in Congress lost an esteemed colleague. Congressman Payne was a devoted public servant

who used his position in Congress to advocate for those less fortunate— first as a teacher and later serving on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. Congressman Payne was an advocate for children and worked to make college more affordable. As the highest Ranking Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Human Rights, he worked to promote human rights around the world and helped secure billions of dollars in foreign aid for treating HIV/ AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. It is difficult to lose a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. This

stood out as a frame of reference because of his in-depth knowledge of every African leader and the challenges their countries faced. He used his knowledge and scholarly pursuits to help shape U.S. policies as they related to Africa. As he pursued expanding mutually beneficial ties with Africa, freeing Mandela, ending colonialism, and expanding democracy in Africa, Donald Payne was a force for hope. His passing leaves a huge hole in the sky. He will be remembered forever and missed by many. We offer our sincerest condolences to his family.”

!

Rev. Jesse Jackson said, “Donald Payne was a friend to me for 40years. He was a social worker, a teacher and the foremost authority on Africa with a commitment to democracy, change and justice in the U.S. Congress. Serving 23 years in the House of Representatives, Congressman Payne

Hello! It's amazing what one can learn just by talking to strangers who can become acquaintances. I want to get this

From the

Hon. Cynthia McKinney out there because I was stunned when my waitress made the comment as I was complementing her on her cheerful attitude, her pretty eyeshadow, and other small talk. She announced that she was really not that cheerful about the fact that her sister, in the U.S. military, had just received her orders to report to Syria and

that her sister would be shipping out very soon. Imagine that. U.S. troops headed to Syria. Did our President make that announcement to the people of this country? the presence of foreign troops on their territory. Of course, this offensive deployment was made under an appropriate cover story that, for those familiar with the region, is clearly only a cover story and a not-very-credible one, at that. send that message now: http:// www.whitehouse.gov/contact/submitquestions-and-comments.Now, about Chamak and those 100 miles. Chamak is the name of my new bicycle. Chamak means beauty in Urdu and according to Vernon Huffman of Bike4Peace, she is a beauty. You see, Vernon put her together. Vernon conceived of her and chose each of her parts based on my abilities (or lack of abilities)! And because the Public Interest Law Center agreed to host a panel for Bike4Peace to discuss sustainable living, we decided to bike from Corvallis to Eugene, attend our panel, and then bike back to Corvallis. All in all, with the extra tooling around town, I have now been declared a WEEKEND CENTURION!! Maybe one day, I will graduate up to doing a century in one day only--yep, that's right, some bikers can actually complete 100 miles in one day! During Bike4Peace, we encountered many centurions along the way from California to the White House.

IMAGE is everything! "DeMetris Sampson can truly be noted as "one-in-a-million." Notwithstanding being successfully brilliant in her profession and a key contributor to her membership organizations; she is a "giver" of heart and soul to her family, friends and personal beliefs. One always knows where she stands, and if they do not, she will tell them. I love her."

Patricia Webb

DeMetris is smart, savvy, honorable and balanced. She is also one of the most giving people I know--both of her time and resources. She is one of those from whom I seek advice and counsel. DeMetris spends a lot of time in the background, making life better for a lot of Dallasites. I recall her days as a DART board member, fighting for the Fair Park rail line and being successful in providing equitable resources to the southern region. She is not afraid to fight for what is right. DeMetris has provided jobs and opportunities for many people. I think she is one of the biggest hearts I know.

Matrice Ellis Kirk

DeMetris looks for ways to be a blessing. Her brilliance and courage is only exceeded by a compassionate heart that cares to make a difference in the lives of those who are disadvantaged. She uses her advantages for the underprivileged! Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III

DeMetris Sampson is a dynamic leader, philanthropist, and community activist. As her friend and soror, I’ve always thought of her as a woman ahead of her time, and someone who has used her talents and knowledge to better the Dallas community. I want to congratulate DeMetris on receiving the 25th Annual Image Award presented by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated – Omicron Mu Omega Chapter. U.S. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

DeMetris is a "go to" person for issues that improve the quality of life for those who are less fortunate. She has actively participated in almost every initiative that would make Dallas more inclusive and worked for those policies and practices that would bring about more equity. Where there is a worthy cause......look around, you will likely see DeMetris. She has the energy to go along with her convictions.......and that is a winning combination.

DeMetris Sampson has it going on. When the Legacy of Service Foundation, in conjunction with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Omicron Mu Omega Chapter honors DeMetris at its 25th Image Award Celebration, “Empowering Young Leaders through Timeless Service,” it will be a well-deserved honor. It is definitely appropriate that DeMetris will receive the 2012 Image Award because if there is anyone who epitomizes leadership and service, it has to be her. She is a real role model and not a model playing a role. She understands that to whom much is given, much is expected or required. Hailing from a small Texas town, DeMetris attended the University of Texas at Austin where she received a bachelors degree in Business Administration in 1977 and the Juris Doctorate degree in 1980. She also received a Masters of Law in Taxation degree from Southern Methodist University. This year she will celebrate her 25th year with her law firm, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, where she is the managing partner of the Dallas office. DeMetris has the distinction of being the first African American woman to become a partner in a majority firm in the City of Dallas. She appears to be filled with joy the most when she is serving and she has an extensive resume of community service. A life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the NAACP, she is also an active member of the Dallas Bar Foundation, Texas Bar Foundation, the Dallas Assembly, St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church and The Trinity Chapter of Links, Inc. Her Omicron Mu Omega chapter members are quick to point to her beautiful spirit and giving nature, when they talk about their sister. DeMetris has been recognized on numerous occasions, but the work she is doing is not so that she can receive awards. She takes great joy in serving and giving. Her smile is infectious as she shares her blessings with others. Those blessings have come in the form of huge charitable contributions or long hours working on community service projects or working or heading a campaign. Now if you really want to hear the chuckle that comes from the depths of her soul, exploding and grabbing ahold of everyone in the vicinity; well just catch her at the Dallas Mavericks game. And she’s not a fair-weather fan. DeMetris has been a long-time season ticket holder and when she’s at the games, if there’s one voice that you can count on to be cheering the team on, it’s her. Usually her sidekick at the games is her sister DeGloria. The two staunch Mavs fans travelled to Miami to cheer their team on against the Heat in the NBA finals last year. Talk about excited! Now you can’t begrudge DeMetris any fun time. The same level of intensity that is evident when she is having fun is also there when she’s working. DeMetris is tenacious, conscientious, spiritually-grounded, family-oriented and loyal. The consummate professional, DeMetris honors commitments and anyone who deals with her, well, they know where they stand. There’s nothing phony about her and her word is her bond. And don’t even think for a moment that you can pull anything over on her. Her faith is strong so she understands that faith and fear cannot exist in the same space, so she does what is right, even if that means standing alone. When I think about DeMetris, I am proud to call her my friend. If everyone has a friend like DeMetris, they are never alone. If all the members of the organizations that she belongs to worked half as hard as she does; the impact would be felt for centuries to come. If all the people who have benefitted from her efforts had the stellar voting record that she has, many of the problems facing our communities could be eradicated. She’s the 2012 Image Award recipient, honored for a lifetime of service. Whether she is serving in leadership positions or as a soldier on a team, DeMetris Sampson image is so worthy of celebrating. I could say, ‘boy we need more DeMetris Sampson’s,’ but I am just going to be happy with the one we have because she is definitely a force to be reckoned with. The Legacy of Service Foundation, which is the fundraising arm of Alpha Kappa Sorority, Incorporated, Omicron Mu Omega Chapter, should be saluted for its selection of Ms. Sampson. Also the Foundation provides scholarships for deserving students and supports over 20 farreaching projects, such as the Emerging Young Leaders Program (EYL). EYL impacts the lives of girls in grades six through eight, by providing guidance in leadership development, civic engagement, enhanced academic preparation and character building.

Mark Twain once said, ”No man or woman can be comfortable without their own approval.” DeMetris is a woman of unquestionable integrity, an active and engaged citizen and the personification of a businesswoman who fuses all of these disciplines for the benefit of all humankind. DeMetris Sampson is a courageous, committed, and consistent leader in this community, State, and nation. Whenever and wherever she sees wrong, she works to make it right. She gives generously of her time, talent, and treasure to make the world a better place for everyone. DeMetris Sampson (reminds me of Ruth from the Old Testament) allow me to paraphrase, RUTH IS A ROMANCE OF REDEMPTION: DeMetris Sampson has a romance for young people, the disenfranchised and her community. Her persistent and devoted commitment to the aforementioned is indescribable.

When you say Demetris Sampson, first thing that comes to mind is, " Classy" "professional" "genuine" "Loyal." I can go on and on but she is an inspiration to the community and the city of Dallas. I consider her as a friend but I respect her as a leader.

Ms. Sampson has been a mentor both personally and professionally. Not only have I consulted her on every major career decision, I have also looked to her as it relates to my family interactions and how I can give back to my community. Her professional success pales in comparison to how deeply committed she is to her family. As a working wife and mother, I am so encouraged by her achievements at work and her close-knit family that support each other. At her 50th birthday party, I watched in awe as she burned the note of her hometown church and then gave to other worthwhile charities across the country. It was her celebration, yet somehow, the focus shifted to to the needs of other people. That's classic DeMetris.

Scenes Around the Country Reliving history in Selma Selma was the place to be for the annual commemoration of Bloody Sunday. The beautiful Amelia Boynton Robinson, who is 103, was among those in attendance, with Dr. Ray Wimbush, and Dr. Ben Chavis. Hundreds reenacted the March across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, except this time they weren’t met by racist police officers who back in 1965 used tear gas, water hoses and billy clubs to assault men, women and children who were taking a stand for voting rights. The struggle continues in 2012. Thomas Muhammad, of Dallas, TX., serves on the board of directors of the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute and he makes the trek annually for the activities. He provided the photos of sessions that took place this year. Others in attendance included Congressman John Lewis and comedian/activist Dick Gregory.

Guess Which Hero I Am By M.P. Stone Edited by Claude McIver Dream big and study hard and some day you can be a hero, too, writes M. P. Stone, the author of Guess Which Hero I Am. According to the author, she was inspired to write this book and the stageplay of the same name, by the students who participated in the 2010 Big Thought/Thriving Minds Summer Camp Program at Dallas’ Brashear Elementary School. Guess Which Hero I Am is a great book to read during Women’s Histo ry Month, as the author highlights several women who have made significant contributions to society. The setting is in a school where, prior to a test, fifth grade students participate in an assembly where they are presented with information about heroes and they must guess who the heroes are based on the famous quotes or description of the occupations presented. As expected, when talking about heroes, students mention fictional characters, so the author introduces a number of historical figures who are not always featured in history books. Of course Ms. Stone includes the usuals like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and President Barack Obama, but she also includes a diverse group that includes actor and martial artist Bruce Lee, activist Cesar Chavez, inventor Guillermo Camarena, journalist Connie Chung, Chief Black Kettle and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The author also points out that the heroes are right in the community the children live in and also right in their families.

Too often children look outside of the home for heroes. Guess Which Hero I Am provides a lesson for children and adults alike, that what you may be looking for is right in front of you.

St. Jude and National Pan-Hellenic Council fight pediatric cancer, Sickle Cell Disease MEMPHIS, Tenn.,

-- The National PanHellenic Council (NPHC) is uniting with St. Jude Children's Research HospitalŽ to rally its more than 1 million members through the Call to Service for St. Jude initiative. For the first time, the NPHC, composed of African-American international Greek letter sororities and fraternities, supports one mission – helping St. Jude. "This partnership with the National Pan-Hellenic Council means that more communities will be aware of the lifesaving mission of St. Jude. The support of NPHC members will help ensure that St. Jude can continue its pioneering research and treatment and that no family will ever pay St. Jude for anything," said Richard Shadyac, Jr., CEO of ALSAC/St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. "We look forward to cultivating this dynamic relationship with the NPHC as we work together to help realize a day when no child will die in the dawn of life." Four-year-old Kennedi is just one of the tens of thousands of children who benefit from the cutting-edge research and treatment at St. Jude. Last summer, her mother Chauntay, who is a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, and father Joseph, who is a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, were alarmed to learn that Kennedi suffered from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer, and was referred to St.

Jude where she was placed on a two-anda-half year treatment plan. Within two weeks, her cancer was in remission. Because of St. Jude, Kennedi lives a happy, healthy life. Her mother said, "Whenever she sees the St. Jude logo, she says 'There's my doctor!' We trust the doctors here, and know Kennedi is at the best place possible." Relationships with organizations like the NPHC are more important than ever to St. Jude because no family pays St. Jude for anything and more than 75 percent of the hospital's funding comes from the public. "The National Pan-Hellenic Council is thrilled to collaborate and engage our national network of members in support of such a great cause," said Cynthia Butler-McIntyre, chair of the NPHC Council of Presidents and National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. "This Call to Service initiative not only helps raise funds, it also allows us to help spread the message that there is treatment for childhood cancer and other d e a d l y d i s e a s e s t h a t a ff e c t o u r communities, like sickle cell and pediatric AIDS." National Pan-Hellenic Council Call to Service for St. Jude, http:// www.stjude.org/nphc, is a 30-day challenge where members, friends and family can register and support an organization's individual fundraising goal for St. Jude. The top 10 fundraisers will receive a trip to Memphis, Tenn. to

attend the National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Awards dinner in October and tour the hospital. The challenge will culminate on April 5 with the annual Radio Cares for St. Jude Kids radiothon, led by Radio One, Inc., which has raised more than $14 million for St. Jude. When St. Jude opened its doors 50 years ago, it was the first fully integrated children's hospital in the South. AfricanAmerican and white patients were treated in the same rooms; they dined together; and bathroom facilities were integrated. St. Jude was the first to
