Message to the People... Two movies - multitude of emotions
I was alone when I went to see “12 Years a Slave” because my date was not in the mood for “crying.” I had heard about Mr. Solomon Northup and looked forward to seeing him portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who had one of my favorite lines in John Singleton’s “Four Brothers.” Cheryl Smith Called “agonizingly magnificent,” “12 Years” is the adaptation of Mr. Northup’s 1853 autobiography about how he, a free man from upstate New York, was kidnapped and sold Get your tickets for Marvin into slavery, where he remained until with the help of a Canadian abolitionist, he is freed and returned to his family. Sapp. Call 214-941-0110 Indeed “12 Years” was difficult to watch at times. Sitting in the comfort of the air-conditioned theater in North Dallas, I couldn't help but compare my situation to Mr. Northup and the other enslaved Africans. One day Northup was out shopping with his family and shortly after he is chained and subjected to the horrors of the peculiar institution of slavery. What if I awakened to find myself stripped of clothing and dignity, unable to speak -- the voice of “One African American Woman’s Opinion,” silenced forever? Now I must serve at the whim of men and women who have no regard for me as a human being and will use me up until the day I die. There were so many emotions swimming around in my head as I watched the torment, degradation and viciousness of the oppressors. The anglo woman sitting to my left never moved. On my right, a friend couldn’t control her emotions as she cried out several times, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.” Black Contemporary Television Although I took several history courses at 15 Florida A&M, where Professors James Eaton and Ted Hemingway candidly discussed the brutal nature of slavery, and I’ve talked to or heard from numerous scholars like Ivan Van Sertima, John Hope Franklin and John Henrik Clarke; “12 Years a Slave” takes the story much deeper than their lessons or similar movies like “Roots,” “Django Unchained,” “Mandingo,” “Amistad,” and “Sankofa.” In contrast, everyone I talked to wanted to go with me to the screening of “Best Man Holiday,” Writer/Director Malcolm Lee’s sequel to the popular “Best Man, featuring a star-studded cast that includes Nia Long, Taye Diggs, Morris Chestnut Terrence Howard and Monica Calhoun -- college friends reunited after 15 years. Once again Mr. Lee manages to entertain, educate and inspire movie-goers. I laughed. I cried. I cussed. Veteran honored I also reminisced about the people in my life whose friendships have withstood the tests of time and I am so 21 glad I had the experiences -- being able to attend college, join organizations and build relationships--something my ancestors were robbed of but because they lived through what they did, I am able to live as I do today. So, when I hear people saying they don’t want to see “12 Years” because they “can’t take it,” or they are tired of hearing about slavery; I want to scream. I want to shake them and tell them to get over it, that the reason our world is so messed up today is because we have tried to forget. Harriet Tubman talked about the many slaves she freed and said she could have freed so many more, if only they knew they were slaves! Maybe if more people saw “12 Years” and how brutal slavery was; they’d treat one another better and have more loving relationships like those seen in “Best Man,” where friends helped friends and friends knew how to be friends--or they learned how. Maybe if more people saw “12 Years,” we’d realize that slavery still exists, right here Cheryl Smith, Publisher in America and around the world, and we’d do more to put an end to the savage, dishonorable practices. Yes, there’s still human trafficking and forced labor, with millions of victims. As long as we bury the truth and criticize those Established 2011 who try to tell the stories, we will continue repeating history. IMESSENGER is a tribute to Le Messager, Slavery was ugly. “12 Years a Slave” tells the ugly truth. I guess some people can’t handle the truth. founded by Cameroonian journalist Pius Njawe Guess what, it’s time to grow up! Conyers & Bipartisan representatives introduce
Hon. John Conyers, Jr.
(WASHINGTON) – House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.), Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr. (R-Wisc.), Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet Chairman Howard Coble (R-N.C.), and Congressman Danny K. Davis (DIll.) introduced H.R. 3465, the Second Chance Reauthorization Act. The Second Chance Act was passed by Congress with strong
bipartisan support and signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2008.
Representatives issued the following statement:
This legislation provides non-profit faith and community-based organizations with mentoring grants to develop support programs such as drug treatment, housing, job training, medical care and education.
Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (DMich.): “Reauthorization of the Second Chance Act is critical to disrupting the prison pipeline which has plagued so many minority communities across the nation. By supporting community based re-entry programs, this legislation provides critical assistance to those emerging from our jails and prisons, allowing them to rebuild their families and become productive members of our society. I hope that this bipartisan effort will have success similar to our original effort in 2007, so that we can speed this to the President’s desk.”
Re-entry services have been improved, which has resulted in a reduction in recidivism and helped ensure a successful return to society for prisoners who have completed their sentence. The Second Chance Reauthorization Act builds on the success of the original legislation and continues to authorize funding for both public and private entities to evaluate and improve academic and vocational education for offenders in prison, jails and juvenile facilities. After introducing the Second Chance Reauthorization Act, the
Congressman F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr. (R-Wisc.): “As chairman of the OverCriminalization Task Force, I am committed to strengthening our
criminal justice system to ensure prisons serve as a deterrent and a place where people can be rehabilitated. There is overwhelming evidence that the Second Chance Act has been a resounding success by helping fully integrate prisoners back into society. Education and positive reinforcement are some of the most effective tools to prevent illegal behavior, and this law has improved re-entry services – not only saving taxpayer dollars, but changing lives, strengthening families and improving our communities. Reauthorization of these programs is important.” Congressman Danny K. Davis (DIll.): “The second chance law has proven to seriously help reduce recidivism and provide hope for large numbers of individuals to turn their lives around and become productive citizens who can contribute to the well-being of society.”

One Drop… Away!
Vincent Hall The semi-new hit TV show; “Totally Biased” with comedian W. Kamau Bell is a staple and source for writing this column weekly.
By Vincent Hall
November 29 and blow the roof off with sales. Liberal-minded and truth-seeking White folks will buy it for sure.
“What does it mean to be Black? Is Blackness a matter of biology or consciousness? What determines who is Black and who is not?
And since you're taking your broke ass to the mall anyway, and your money is “shawt,” the least you can do is buy a book that might help you throughout the next year. If you need a second reason, this book will help you understand global “Blackness” in a way that you thought you did but probably don’t.
Dr. Yaba Blay, an assistant professor and co-director of the Africana Studies program in Drexel University’s College of Arts and Sciences, seeks to challenge narrow perceptions of what Blackness is and what it looks like.
The Drexel U website article about “One Drop” offers some great rationale and ravings that should make you want to purchase this scholarly work. And just in
The show which features Bell and is produced by the multifaceted Chris Rock, is well-written, wellchoreographed and consistently introduces news perspectives you might have otherwise missed.
The book, (1)ne Drop: Shifting the Lens on Race, combines candid narratives and photos of 60 contributors from 25 different countries, providing a living testimony to the diversity of Blackness. It is intended to spark dialogue
The book is part of Blay’s larger, multi-platform project called (1)ne Drop – a reference to the “one-drop rule” from the early 1900s that held that anyone with 1/32 of “African Black blood” was Black. “In recent history, many Americans have used the term ‘post-racial’ to describe the state of current U.S. race relations, somehow suggesting that we have ‘gotten over race’ or that we no longer have racial issues,” said Blay. “What (1)ne Drop demonstrates is that concerns about race and what ‘box’ people fit into are as important now, as it was when the country instituted the one-drop rule.”” This is not Dr. Blay’s first rodeo, so Google her to look for some of her other works. But since Black Friday is called Black Friday and all the Blacks I called last Friday aren’t making much money, I figured Blacks on that Friday should make it a genuine Black Friday by supporting this sister and a Black business.
“Totally Biased” is always good for bringing you the latest news or the latest revelation on daily news items. The show features conversations that include Native Americans debating the Washington Redskins name, the evolution of Punk Bands and a bevy of black intellectuals and budding stars that you might not otherwise learn of. That's where I first found out about the new book on its way to your sales racks this Black Friday. The book is titled; “(1)ne Drop”: Shifting the lens on Race, by Dr. Yaba Blay of Drexel University. Because the book is being printed by a Black vendor, we should go to the bookshelves when it's released on Black Friday PAGE 7

The Beat Goes On for DISD Football By Roger B. Brown It has been 25 years since the DISD celebrated a state championship in football. And by the looks of things, you can go ahead and add another year to that total because it won’t be happening this year. With the state playoffs set to get started this week, it’s a real long shot!
according to USA Today. Then, either No.2-ranked DeSoto (10-0), which is No. 4 in the nation, or state-ranked No.8 Southlake Carroll (9-1) will likely be waiting in the state semifinals round.
As a matter of fact, Lincoln was the last DISD to even make it to a state championship game some 10 years ago. That Tigers’ team, which ended up losing in double overtime, was led by coach Reggie Samples (now at Skyline) and the all-around exploits of quarterback Byron Hanspard.
And if they make it past that gauntlet, state No.4ranked Galena Park North Shore (10-0) could be waiting in the state championship game.
The best shot for a championship run once again appears to be perennial power Skyline, which has been the pre-eminent and dominant program in the city since Sample’s arrival, supplanting longtime power Carter at the top. Since arriving at Skyline eight years ago, Samples has taken the Raiders to the playoffs every year. Last year’s team (12-2) finished two games shy of the state championship. The Raiders have racked up 17 playoff wins during that span. “Skyline plays three different seasons,’’ said Jeff Johnson, DISD athletic director. “They play a very tough pre-district schedule… then district... and on to the playoffs. Reggie generally plays a very tough non-district schedule in anticipation of a long playoff run. “They are highly respected all around the state, and had a really good shot at it two years ago (loss to Southlake Carroll in the state semifinals by blowing a 10-point lead in the last two minutes of the game at SMU. By the way, Southlake Carroll went on win the state title the next week). Reggie does a great job at Skyline, and they’ve just got to finish the job. And if they ever break through, they could go on a good run because they haven knocking on the door for a while now.’’ Skyline is ranked No. 18 in the latest state Class 5A poll. Just to get out of the region, the Raiders will have to get past top-ranked Allen (10-0), which also is rated No. 2 in the nation, PAGE 9
!
At least Skyline has raised the bar Roger B. Brown for DISD expectations, because there was a time when the district couldn’t even get out of the first round of the playoffs. “At some point, expectations can’t be just to get to the third or fourth round,’’ Johnson said. “They’re always going to have a chance to be pretty good simply because of the makeup of the school (Skyline is among the top five schools, in terms of enrollment, in the state). And when you mix that in with the great job that Reggie has done with the program, it could just be a matter of having the breaks go our way one year. It could be as simple as that.’’
coach. “I think his inexperience (he as in his first year at SOC after having served as Sample’s offensive coordinator at Skyline) may have hurt him last year. But if they can avoid the injuries and get a few breaks along the way, they could surprise a few people. It’s all going to depend on the matchups.’’ SOC is in the same region as Highland Park (9-1), while San Antonio Brennan (10-0), which is ranked No. 2 , while defending champion Denton Guyer (Region I), No. 2-ranked San Antonio Brennan (10-0) and Humble Summer Creek (10-0), ranked No. 5, all could be
waiting in the wings for the Golden Bears. As for Carter, the Cowboys will have a monumental task of trying to get past national power Aledo (10-0), which is ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 17 in the nation. Also, Whitehouse (10-0), ranked No. 3 in the state, Texas City (10-0), ranked No. 4 and Elgin (10-0), ranked No. 6 will be tough foes for the Cowboys if they’re able to advance through the playoffs. “I’d be disappointed if at least one of our teams didn’t make it to at least the third-round of the playoffs,’’ Johnson said. NFL WEEK 10 PICKS : IND over TENN; CHI over BALT; HOU over OAK; NYJ over BUFF; ATL over TB; PITT over DET; PHIL over WASH; CIN over CLE; ARIZ over JAX; SD over MIA; SEA over MINN; NO over SF; NTG over GB; Den over KC and CAR over NE.
SOC (9-1) and Carter (8-2) also could make nice playoff runs this season, according to Johnson. Carter, which is ranked No.5 in the area, handed SOC its only loss of the season. SOC is ranked No. 7 in the area and No. 17 in the state. “Coach (Patrick) Williams has done a great job at Carter and is getting the program back on par with what they used to have,’’ Johnson said. “And I think SOC has a legitimate chance to go a long way, and coach (Emmett) Jones has really matured into a good !

Since being selected from over 1,000 applicants to attend the coveted “The Workshop at Macy’s” program in New York, HEIGHT GODDESS has an opportunity for expansion by being sold in major department stores. To assist in accomplishing this longtime goal, company founder Lameka Weeks has officially launched a Kickstarter online funding “Tall women have been shopping with us online and now they may have the opportunity to purchase HEIGHT GODDESS in department stores all across the nation,” said Lameka Weeks,

The HEIGHT GODDESS Fall/Winter 2014 collection features the Charlotte Dress Pant, the Victoria Wide Leg Trouser, the Heather skinny jean in various colors and the Moto Jacket. “Tall women aren’t just taller than averageheight women, our bodies are also shaped differently. So it’s not just about lengthening a sleeve it’s about considering broader shoulders and an elongated torso too,” said Weeks. “The HEIGHT GODDESS clothing line is created inhouse which gives us complete control regarding the fit and design of every piece.” The HEIGHT GODDESS Kickstarter campaign will run through Dec. 19, 2013 with a goal of raising a minimum of $20,000. By making monetary pledges, supporters will help place the chic and contemporary line of clothing on the racks and shelves of major department store retailers. For donations of $25 and more, supporters will receive gifts that include fashionable HEIGHT GODDESS graphic tees, necklaces and weekender totes. “The Kickstarter funding campaign is a big deal because we really need the financial support to meet our goal of expanding. Although we may seem like a large company, we are only a twoperson operation simply trying to help women with height feel more confident and beautiful in fashionable clothing that fits their taller than average bodies.” From stylish jeans and pants to classic dresses and tops, HEIGHT GODDESS is eliminating the need of tall women having to shop in the men’s clothing department. Ranging in sizes from 4 to 20, the items featured in each collection are proportionally designed on tall fit models to ensure they are tailored specifically for tall
color options. “The success of our Kickstarter campaign will show major retailers that tall women are a viable market for having clothing in their stores,” said Weeks. “We receive lots of feedback through social media from fans expressing how much they love the clothes and how HEIGHT GODDESS has changed their lives, so we’re really hoping they step up along with the overall community and support by pledging to our campaign and spreading the word.” To learn more about HEIGHT GODDESS and to support the company’s Kickstarter funding campaign visit Kickstarter.com and www.heightgoddess.com.

Much like Fulton, Tracy Martin has taken his role as proud parent and channeled his efforts to promote the broad societal shift required to ensure that a similar incident never claims the life of another child. Martin's message of change extends to families from all walks of life, encouraging parents, relatives, caregivers and teachers to let their sons, daughters, and other loved ones know that their lives are valuable and to stress that they are loved no matter how society views them. Although his son is gone, Martin hopes Trayvon's death helps to heal the country and acts as motivation for parents and caregivers to keep fighting for the safety of all children. Garland Firefighters engage community to warm the hearts of children Garland, TX – The Garland Firefighters Association invites the community to join them to help provide new winter coats to warm the hearts, minds, and bodies, of children in need. This fundraising campaign is led by Garland Firefighters, local 1293 to provide at-risk children in Garland with brand-new, American-made coats for the winter. This is the first year Garland Firefighters have joined forces with national non-profit Operation Warm to launch the program, “Firefighters Coats for Kids,” a movement led by firefighters across the U.S. to combat the effects of childhood poverty while saving American jobs. Each $32 donation will provide a brand-new, American-made winter coat for a child at Caldwell Elementary in south Garland where over 80% of students live at a degree of the federal poverty level. “Our town has really stepped up to support the kids,” says
Brandon Day, Local 1293 firefighter. “We hope to engage the community and everyone who attends our events leaves with something to remember.” Teaming with the community, the Garland Firefighters have coordinated a successful Cross-Fit fundraiser and have already received support from sponsors ranging in levels from bronze to platinum. “By nature of our service to the community, we see how poverty affects these children,” stated David Riggs, President of Garland Firefighters, Local 1293. “Keeping them warm and safe throughout the winter is the least we can do.” Garland Firefighters hope to raise more than $13,000 to provide coats to over 400 children at Caldwell Elementary. In midNovember, Firefighters will surprise the students with their bright new coats, personally fitting each child, and helping them to write their names in the interior tag, which reads, “Made Especially for You.”

“This is a program that strengthens communities and the overall well-being of children,” stated Carey Palmquist, Executive Director of Operation Warm. “A new coat boosts a child’s selfesteem and allows families to stretch limited financial resources to other basic necessities, such as food and shelter.” For more information on benefits of becoming a sponsor, contact Brandon Day at firemanday@hotmail.com Donate to Garland Firefighters Coats for Kids: www.operationwarm.org/garland Learn More: Operation Warm Teams with International Association of Firefighters Operation Warm is dedicated to providing new winter coats to U.S. children in need and has reached more than 1.2 million children since 1998. The International Association of
Firefighters represents over 300,000 professional fire fighters who are dedicated to serving their communities beyond the traditional call of duty. In 2012 Operation Warm joined together with the IAFF to form a widespread, high-impact program called Firefighters Coats for Kids. The collaboration of these two organizations deepens the reach and support of our efforts, as fire fighters protecting communities across the USA have become the face of this mission and the catalyst for a multi-dimensional program that not only provides coats to impoverished children but also helps Americans get back to work and out of poverty. Through this unprecedented partnership fire fighters are distributing coats made and sourced 100% in the USA. This collaboration provides relief for families who struggle to meet basic needs and to children who will now experience the joy and pride of owning something brand new – a gift of warmth from their local heroes.

Cultural Pride is a Fashionable Asset
2013–2014 SPEAKER SERIES Self pride is beneficial for individual selfesteem. In some cultures, showing pride is almost mandatory to illustrate one's love and appreciation for community or a cause. In the world of pageantry, contestants are quite selective over the pageant gown that is worn as it is an anticipated segment of the pageant. Judges and audiences typically expect contestants to wear traditional pageant gowns and wardrobe. However we found two accomplished women (Ms. Florida America 2013 - Amanda Wamunyima and Ms. America 2013 - Chiniqua Pettaway) who embrace ethnic fashions and display cultural pride in their community. Cultural fashions are more prevalent in ethnic-based pageants. A dynamic new trend is the expression of cultural fashions in the world of mainstream pageantry. Today's popular Media channels have a reputation for portraying less than stellar images of black women. Being an American Black woman in this era is a critical issue, because so many expectations exist that are very insulting concerning black women. Along with the excessive use of the "N-Word" that permeates many African-American social scenes. The airwaves and social networks are filled with images and language that suggests young black girls are to emulate music Video Vixens, Gold Diggers or they are modern Jezebels; to be addressed using the "b-word". However, we have found two accomplished women who offer a positive image, and they defy these negative stereotypes while displaying cultural pride as community heroines. Ms. Wamunyima (a first-generation immigrant from the country of Zambia) sparked a trend when she not only wore an ethnicinspired evening gown but her entire wardrobe during the Ms. America 2013 pageant week's activities comprised of trendy ethnic inspired designs. PAGE 14
!
During the competition, Amanda wore an ivory satin evening gown with metallic gold lace trim and crystals at waist and off shoulder, and side slit. Amanda explains, "My wardrobe is styled by TeKay Designs in Houston Texas. I'm proud of my culture. I want to show my cultural side through ethnic fashions. Because I'm from Zambia, I want to shine a light on African fashions to support the designers. African fashions are more than just clothing; because the garment tells a story in tribal context. For example; the fabric that is used in traditional Musisi dresses often signifies a geographical region and tribal expression. There is also a new generation of Africans who are more inspired by western designs fused with African fabrics. And they call these looks Afrique-Chic. So, I wear ethnic fashions to share more about whom I am." Amanda has sparked a cultural style trend in mainstream pageantry. Since winning her title, you will find Amanda adorned in opulent cultural fashions and representing her title at events while advancing her humanitarian cause. Amanda's mission is to lend her voice to ieEmbrace organization as her humanitarian cause. ieEmbrace provides hospitals and clinics with medical supplies and equipment; as well as offering youth development programs. Presenting culture in the forefront is a stylish asset, even more so at gala events that are as highly profiled as the Golden Icons Academy Movie Awards (GIAMA) ceremony. Amongst the celebrities and socialites, we met with pageant winner Chiniqua Pettaway the reigning Ms. America 2013. Ms. Pettaway's striking appearance in a body sculpting bronze gold lace dress with pleated undertones made her a paparazzi magnet as she arrived to accept interviews. This is intended, because Ms. America knows to leverage media attention to advance her humanitarian mission to the forefront.

Former NFL players weigh in on bullying issue By Donald Lee In light of the ongoing bullying controversy in the National Football League surrounding two Miami Dolphins players, it is fitting to write an awareness piece that gives young football players with dreams of one day playing in the NFL information that they’ll need in order to know how to discern what may be seen as a fine line between “rites of passage,” or the initiation practices targeting rookie players, and bullying. I’ve turned to three former (Beaumont) West Brook High School standouts who went on to play in the NFL — Mickey Washington, Earl Dotson and Curtis Ceaser Jr. — to talk about the recent situation in which Miami Dolphins player Richie Incognito was suspended indefinitely from the team for “detrimental conduct” relating to the alleged bullying of teammate Jonathan Martin, a second year player with the Dolphins. Washington, whose eight-year career as a defensive back included playing with the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills, also sits on the board of directors for the NFL Players Association, which has insisted “on a fair investigation” for all involved. “At some point, people have to stop blaming the players, and they have to look at organizations,” says Washington, a 1990 draft pick of
Neo Soul Band Tone 7 Raising Funds for Haiti with New Single: Long Live Haiti San Francisco, CA-- Neo Soul band Tone 7 has made a name for itself by combining diverse musical influences including Hard Rock, R&B and Hip Hop. good fun,” says Ceaser, who was drafted by the New York Jets in 1995 and remained with the team through 1996. “That case there was a bullying situation — for that to happen to a second-year player,” Ceaser says, noting that initiations are generally aimed at first-year players. “It’s no way in hell that a second-year player deals with that.” Dotson, who made a living blocking for Brett Favre with the Green Bay Packers from 1993 to 2003, says he played for an organization that placed a premium on a stress-free working atmosphere. “As far as my rookie year goes, I never had to deal with hazing,” Dotson says. “The reason behind that is because Green Bay didn’t tolerate that at all. (Then) Coach Mike Holmgren, his philosophy was: ‘How can you concentrate on making this team if you gotta worry about hazing?’ ”
country, the members of Tone 7 decided to seek a way to raise awareness and help to the people of Haiti. From this passion, the single “Long Live Haiti” was born. Joining forces with Partners in Health, an organization that focuses on the individual patients to break the cycle of poverty and disease, proceeds raised from “Long Live Haiti” will go towards treating malaria and tuberculosis, building homes for poor families, helping farmers increase their crops, and treating malnutrition in children. Tone 7 encountered Partners in Health following the earthquake,
when they signed on to headline a concert to raise funds for victims in Haiti. The members were impressed by the organization’s mission and reached out to create a collaborative effort to raise awareness and funding. Two versions of the song have been released, but it is the Reggaeton version that packs the most punch with its sheer versatility, featuring both a Spanish rap and a vintage Creole rap by Haiti native Christian Ettiene. “The original version is more of a fusion of Hip Hop and Rock,” explains the band. “The Reggaeton version allowed us to play with the song more and feature the Spanish and Creole raps.” !
Dotson says when he was in Green Bay rookie players would have to pay for “2 grand” worth of dinner, but nothing remotely close to the $54,896 bill Dallas Cowboys rookie receiver Dez Bryant was pressured into paying in 2010. Asked how a rookie should respond to anything that resembles hazing, Dotson says: “Judge what would be asked of him, when it comes to the hazing. First and foremost, he’s his own man. The last decision is always up to him.” Donald Lee, a Beaumont, Texas, native living in Dallas, is a free-lance journalist. Contact him at (225) 773-2248. Follow him on Twitter at @donaldj_lee.
Through this powerful and entertaining song, Tone 7 hopes that the listener will both enjoy the music but also consider the lyrics: “Why freedom got to mean such loss; politics, greed and the people on the cross. Keep your head up Haiti! You’re in our hearts now Haiti!” Early response from fans has been incredibly positive, and now the band is ready to bring the song to the world. Advocating for the well-being of all those who are tremendously in desperate need, the Tone 7 Haiti project message is crystal clear: every life matters. Tone 7 is currently in the studio working on a full length release for 2014, titled “Matter.” To download a copy of Long Live Haiti and make a donation, please visit: https://donate.pih.org/page/ outreach/view/personal/LongLiveHaiti !

The Failures of Common Charitable Giving Strategies by Eric Friedman
What would you think if I told you that the decision you made to give to the local hospital or cancer group was actually hurting people? That the charitable choice you thought would make the world a better place was actually doing the opposite? That the causes you felt so good about were contrary to what you thought? There’s a dark side to giving that people rarely discuss. Any time a donor chooses one health care charity over all the others (or makes no donation at all), the donor is literally making a decision that affects who gets sick and who doesn't, who is cured and who isn't, and—at the extreme—who lives and who dies. For every person a donor helps, countless others are not helped. Donors who choose an average charity over a great one have failed to do as much good as they could have. Their choice is directly connected to real-life consequences, sometimes half a world away. This issue doesn’t just apply to health care charities. For example, when donors choose one antipoverty charity over others, their decision affects the life outcomes of those who are helped and those who are ignored. And when donors choose an anti-poverty charity over a health care charity, they are making tradeoffs between health and poverty. More people might die if a donor chooses the anti-poverty charity, but more people might live in poverty if the health charity is selected. That's not to say that one type of charity is better, but simply that a donor’s charitable choices can make noticeable differences. This predicament isn’t the donor’s fault—it’s impossible to help everyone—but it is reality. These donors certainly don’t hurt people. And yet, just as donors deserve credit for the good deeds they do, the opportunities they decline should be subject to scrutiny. Some donors might avoid making these difficult decisions by splitting their gift among several different causes and organizations to help many people, but spreading resources around doesn’t PAGE 17
!
effectively tackle the broader issue: scarce resources prevent donors from helping everyone in need. Choices must be made. How should donors make these decisions? As an example, most people would agree that both health care and education are important. If some health care charities are very effective and charities that focus on education have weaker track records, then you may have one preference. But if the reverse were true, you might have the opposite preference. Charitable choices aren't just philosophical; they’re about evidence. Unfortunately, a study from Hope Consulting found that only 35% of donors do any research before deciding which charities to give to, and only 9% spend more than two hours on research. Most people give to the charities they know and like: the university they attended, the health care charity that touched their lives, the arts organization they appreciate. Donors know these are good organizations by seeing their work firsthand. But donors rarely do a rigorous comparison to other charities. (It doesn't really count if the research is exclusively from charity rating agencies that focus on the overhead costs of the organization and don't actually evaluate the quality of the charity’s programs.)
could have. That may be fine with you if you think of charity as people giving away their own money—it's theirs to waste. But it isn't okay if you view it as a lost opportunity to save lives, reduce suffering, or enhance the human experience. Both perspectives have some truth. So how do you actually identify the best charities? Most people have neither the time nor the expertise to research this on their own, so it makes sense for them to piggyback off someone else’s research—the key is to choose that group wisely. You might want to look to large foundations with professional staff, but most are too specialized in niche areas to help with the most important questions for donors. For example, a foundation focused on supporting U.S. primary education typically doesn’t have the expertise to help donors evaluate whether their philanthropy is best directed at U.S. education, malaria prevention, combating global warming, or some other areas. And even among those that do have this expertise, most foundations are too secretive about their evaluation processes and results to be very helpful for
others. There are only a few publicly available resources that are genuinely willing to “go anywhere” in their recommendations. One of my favorite sources for information about charities is the charity evaluator GiveWell. It would consider any charity for any cause, and only gives its top recommendation to three charities —not because GiveWell thinks all other charities are bad, but because it wants to clearly communicate its view of the bestof-the-best. Giving to your alma mater, favorite health care charity, or local cultural organization doesn't actually hurt people. But by choosing a charity for personal reasons instead of evidence-based prioritization, you're foregoing the opportunity to do all you can to make the biggest impact with the amount you give. And what’s the value in charitable giving if the primary purpose isn’t to help others? Eric Friedman is the author of Reinventing Philanthropy: A Framework for More Effective Giving. An excerpt is available at www.ReinventingPhilanthropy.com.
Suppose you give to a hospital that can cure one person of a disease for $10,000, but a health care charity you didn't give to can cure two people of equally horrible illnesses for the same cost. Have you really done a good deed? Yes, compared to the person who gave nothing. But you haven’t done as much good as you !

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING By James A. Washington
For someone who grew up when I did, the question of Jesus Christ continues to mystify many of my friends, when it comes to my newest hero. I mean if you think of Christianity as some kind of sanitized version of European colonialism, then there is no wonder that many regard this faith as a cop out when compared to the ancient older religions of the world, particularly Africa. However, when you do due diligence and study, then it becomes clear how the religion of Christ has been manipulated down through the ages for political purposes. But isn’t that the case with every religion? Man still kills in the name of God; whatever name that might be. And so it has been and so it is now. Religious conflict is still the single reason most people die at the hands of their fellow man (see Middle East, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan to name a few). Faith seems to be a dangerous commodity in this world. Before I go too far down that road, allow me to merely put forward the life of Christ as one, that has caught and held, not only, my attention but, my admiration, my respect, my praise and my worship. As I’ve said many a time, Jesus was and is and will ever be a bad man. Folk can say whatever they want to but this guy was a man’s man. He was a rebel, a revolutionary and dare I say, probably a socialist, if you take his stance on feeding the poor into consideration. He was definitely antiestablishment. I can’t think of anyone who was more anti-status quo than Christ. He was outspoken, selfless, self confident, shameless, giving and loving, and who was more committed to PAGE 18
their beliefs? This man was a teacher, a provider, an obedient son, respectful of His elders, a blessing to all who would listen and I suppose you could characterize him as, larger than life. I’m not trying to convince you of anything. I’m just trying to give you some perspective on why He is my lord and Savior. God or godliness aside, this is a man I’ve come to admire; so much for what He stood for as also for what He said. I mean c’mon, the man died for me. They tell me there is something special about leading men who would die for the cause you represent. I mean who wouldn’t want to change the hearts and minds of people to be more tolerant and accepting of that which makes us all part of the same family known as mankind? Who among us cannot accept the concept of a love so strong that even unto death, it cannot be weakened but yet as a result, is strengthened for all time? People have and continue to die for simply trying to practice what he stood and died for. I just encourage you to read for yourself what has been written about him. Too many would distort His reality to keep you down in order to keep themselves up. There are Jesus Hustlers among us and use His name for their personal gain. I could of course go on for some time but that is not my intent today. I just wanted to give you some of the perspective on why I write this column; where the foundation of this thing came from. Jesus came to be a blessing and I’m just trying to follow His lead. May God bless and keep you always.

Veteran’s Day Celebration honors Lieberman Earlier this week Windsor Senior Living, known by many in the community as the Taj Mahal of senior living because of it's 5-star architectural character, fine cuisine and service to its residents -- had it's 5th Annual Veteran's Day Celebration. In attendance were dozens of retired war veterans living their days out in the luxury they deserve, following their service to this country. During the event, an honorarium occurs where Challenge Coins are presented to the veterans as a remembrance of the iconic coin where during war time they were used to find soldiers who were lost, to establish connectivity to each other and to honor the memory of one another. Sr. Army Air Defense (ADA) soldier Jonathan P. Taylor, who served nine years with the 19th Maintenance Company, now takes great pride in serving these retired veterans everyday as an executive sous chef at Windsor. L Taylor proudly presented the Challenge Coin to Major Sig Lieberman, a Purple Heart recipient, in remembrance of his great service. Seeing both Taylor and Liberman together at the event, was a moment in modern times that captured a war history not to be forgotten and blended it with the new breed of soldier who understands the profound impact these men have had on him and his country.

Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
