Message to the People... Three Zeros - Every day is World AIDS Day On Rae Lewis Thornton’s Facebook page, she wrote of her 30 years since being diagnosed HIV positive and the 20 years since her AIDS diagnosis. I first became acquainted with Rae when she appeared on the front cover of Essence Magazine. She was one of the first HIV positive subjects Cheryl Smith appearing in print and telling her story. Over the years I have interviewed her several times and I have always enjoyed her candor and commitment to sharing her story, as well as how her life continues to change because of the disease and the prescribed regimen that keeps her alive. She shares this information in hopes that others won’t find themselves in the same predicament. Unfortunately, especially in America’s African/Black communities, we have not managed to get a handle on this disease that continues to wreak havoc in the lives of all ages. Clearly many are not using condoms. Just look at the number of pregnancies among unmarried and not-ready-for-parenthood females. Could you even begin to imagine what the statistics would look like if those pregnancies were all HIV diagnoses? Frightening! Djibril Diallo is the Senior Adviser to the Executive Director of UNAIDS at United Nations. According to Dr. Diallo, 2300 young people are infected with HIV every 24 hours and many do not know their status. “That is unconscionable, that is unacceptable,” he said. “Together, we will take all necessary action to bring about the three Zeros---Zero new HIV infections, Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS-related deaths.” What a noble cause. There are so many agencies providing information and resources, still; however, we are dealing with new cases, discriminatory practices and yes, deaths! In a commentary, Earvin “Magic” Johnson focused on the importance of knowing your status, and he wrote, “Still, it’s up to each of you to also do your part – get tested and learn your results. Isn’t it time that we agree that enough is enough? Let’s bring attention back to this growing crisis and empower our community to take a stand and fight back. Let’s increase our collective efforts to work together, share our stories and fight this disease. We have the opportunity to save lives.” Stressing the importance of being tested, Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) wrote: There is the stigma that silently pervades our community. The echoes of prejudices of the 80s, when this virus was new and more frightening than ever, still hold sway in our predominantly black neighborhoods. Many of us hold onto the belief that HIV and AIDS only affect gay men, men on the ‘down low.’ Many of us still want to believe that if you just ‘act right,’ you don't need to worry about being infected. AIDS is now the leading cause of death among black women aged 25 to 34. These are not women of ‘ill repute;’ more often than not they are our friends, sisters, and mothers.” There are numerous organizations, churches and institutions around the world, working to eradicate AIDS. While in Senegal, a delegation, led by Dr. Diallo visited an AIDS clinic where we learned of aggressive steps to deal with HIV/AIDS. As yet another World AIDS Day comes and goes on December 1; it is imperative that we make every day one where we focus on those three zeros. AIDS is on a long list of ills that we must intensify our efforts and turn around the health conditions in our communities. Silence is not the answer. Rae and Magic have shared their lives with us in hopes that we won’t have to endure what they live with daily. Learn from their lessons!

Shop Small This Saturday Will Newton NFIB/Texas Executive Director The deficit in Washington is growing—and I’m not speaking about our nation’s floundering finances. The trust-deficit between Americans and policymakers is distressingly large—with only 19 percent of Americans, according to an October Pew poll, who say that they have faith that the government will do what is right just about always or most of the time. Thankfully, Americans have not lost all hope. They still have faith in some institutions—generally those that they feel truly protect freedoms and preserve livelihoods, like the military and small businesses. In fact, when it comes to job creation and the economy, Americans value the opinions of small-business owners more than any other institution—likely because small-business leaders across the nation have remained committed to hard-work, to jobcreation and to building communities, while many in Washington have become preoccupied with less noble endeavors. Even as the economy has limped along and small-business owner confidence has waned, our faith in the men and women of Main Street has not faded, but remained constant; this is for good reason. In the face of economic struggles, many small employers,

instead of laying people oﬀ, have cut their own salaries to keep their full complement of employees. Others have dipped into savings or taken out second mortgages to keep their doors open or to avoid cutting back employee hours. These are no small feats, but they largely go without acknowledgement or recognition.

It’s likely when you purchase a product or service at a local store or restaurant, you are helping to pay the salary of a neighbor, a friend or a family member. You are helping to keep the people in your town or city employed so that they can support their families. Most importantly, you are demonstrating the value that you place on the small-business people who, by providing you and your community with unparalleled products and services, work hard to keep your trust each and every day. During times like these, we could all benefit from a boost in our faith—faith in the future, faith in our country, faith in our economy. Show your faith in America by starting your holiday season in a small business and “shop small” on Small Business Saturday.

HOLIDAY VISITING The holiday season is a time for visiting and reconnecting with family, friends and neighbors. Sometimes this season can be sad or stressful for those caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease. These hints are our gift in wishing you an enjoyable holiday season. Holidays can be meaningful enriching times for both the patient and family. Maintaining (or adapting) old family rituals and traditions helps all family members feel a sense of belonging and family identity. For an AD patient, this link with a familiar past is reassuring and builds self esteem, i.e. “Look at the beautiful family I created!” Set your own limits early, and be clear about them with others. You do not have to live up to the expectations of friends or relatives. Your situation is different now. Encourage family and friends to visit EVEN IF IT IS PAINFUL FOR THEM. Keep the number of persons visiting at one time to a minimum, or try a few persons visiting quietly with the patient in a separate room. Most AD patients can pull it together for brief periods, if they have adequate private rest in between. Try some simple holiday preparation with the patient several days ahead. Just observing your preparations will familiarize him/her with the upcoming festivities; if they participate with you, they experience the pleasure of helping and giving as well as the fun of anticipation and reminiscing. Prepare potential quiet distractions (a family photo album or a simple repetitive chore like cracking nuts) to use if the patient becomes upset or overstimulated. Try to avoid situations that further confuse or frustrate many patients: crowds of people who expect the patient to remember them noise, loud conversations or loud music PAGE 5

- strange or different surroundings changes in light intensity-too bright or too dark over-indulgence in rich or special food or drink (especially alcohol) change in regular routine and sleep patterns Try scheduling activities, especially some outdoor exercise, early in the day to avoid the fatigue from added activity at the end of a long day. Familiar holiday music, story-telling, singing or church services (even on TV) may be especially enjoyable. If you receive invitations to holiday celebrations which the patient cannot attend, GO YOURSELF. Enjoy the chance to be with friends and family who love you and enjoy your company, with or without your relative. Preparing The Guests 1. Explain clearly as possible what has happened to the person with AD. Give examples of the unusual behaviors that may take place: incontinence, eating food with their fingers, wandering, hallucinations. 2. Explain that it may not be appropriate behavior but the person has a memory loss and does not remember what is expected and acceptable. 3. Remind that visitor through phone calls or letters to be understanding and not to shun the person. 4. If this is the first visit since the family member became severely impaired, tell the person the visit may be painful. The memoryimpaired person may not remember the guest’s name or relationship. 5. Explain the memory loss is a result of the disease and it is not intentional. 6. Stress with the guests that what is important is the meaningfulness of the moment spent together and not what the person remembers. Preparing The Memory-Impaired Person 1. Begin showing a picture of the guest to the person a week before the arrival. 2. Spend more time each day explaining who the visitor is while showing the picture. 3. Arrange for a phone call for the patient and the visitor. The conversation may help both. The call gives the visitor an idea what to expect and gives the memory-impaired person an opportunity to familiarize himself with the visitor. 4. Keep the memory-impaired person’s routine as close to normal as possible. 5. During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, guard against fatigue and find time for adequate rest. !

No matter how little or big, white lies usually provide cover for dark secrets. President Barack Obama is being excoriated for his little white lie on Obamacare, but the dark secret is that 50 million Americans have no health care at all.

What sets LBJ apart, was that he was the consummate politician. LBJ possessed the wherewithal to make deals with the most unlikely foes. Just imagine a man who spewed "Nigger" as if it was

The scriptures says that there are some who sew for others who reap, and as it pertains to civil rights and a better society, the man who reaped JFK’s harvest was Lyndon Baines Johnson, arguably the greatest president ever.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING By James A. Washington

I believe discipline and confidence are spiritual tools to be used as such. Discipline is an amazing thing as it takes a fair amount discipline to have and maintain one’s faith. Coupled with confidence and interpreted as Godly, the two are tools to be used to walk the walk and talk the talk. I believe when this is understood, internal power is the result; not ego or pride but knowledge and assurance. The example I’d like to use are those saints who were in the Upper Room, when the Holy Spirit came upon them in the form of “tongues of fire.” The result was a newfound power of discipline and confidence. They already had faith, but after this they also had the power and grace necessary to spread the Word of God throughout the world. When you think about this in terms of before and after, it can only be the result of sanctified confidence and discipline. Prior to this moment, the faithful were huddled in secret, being …well being faithful to the belief that what Jesus told them was true. God would send another. The ‘Other’ turned out to be the Holy Spirit who imbued them with a discipline and confidence so powerful, it changed the world. The ability to communicate aside, scripture illustrates that through the Holy Spirit, discipline combined with confidence gives us the power to stand and deliver testimony that withstands undermining by an envious world. Accepting and utilizing these tools allow us to be unable to deny God in favor of man’s laws. Like Peter and John said before the Sanhedrin after the day of Pentecost, “Judge for yourselves whether it is PAGE 13

right in God’s sight to obey you rather than God; for we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” Acts 4:19-20. The operative phrase here is “cannot help speaking out.” This is the same Peter who denied Jesus three times; an act of cowardice, or a man bereft of confidence and discipline. I guess what I’m trying to say is when all is said and done, you’re supposed to speak about what God has done for you. Did I say speak? I meant shout. “When they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the Word of God with boldness.” Acts 4:31. You remember Paul at Ephesus? “When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.” Acts 19:6. My point is faith based discipline and spiritual confidence that is powered by the Holy Spirit can be quite liberating; even in the face of public criticism, which for most of us is really private criticism from friends and family. It is positive and powerful. It is fortifying this courage we receive via the Holy Spirit. Some call it being set apart. It is not always understood by those closest to us and lets us stand up as Christians in the face of adversity, temptation and yes, criticism of the worst kind. Yes we will all fail more than we’d like but, we all have the infrastructure to shore up those weak spots because we know they exist. Finally let me make myself perfectly clear. I believe the discipline coupled with the confidence that I seek, will be found when the Holy Spirit takes up permanent residence in my heart and soul. It is my desire and my forever quest.

Recently, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc, Psi Chapter members and auxiliaries volunteered to serve dinners for the Feast of Sharing in Dallas, along with hundreds of other volunteers. The diverse crowd of volunteers from across the city united in purpose and demonstrated the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. is a national business and professional women’s sorority. Marie Bates, Judy Reeves, Carol Hardy, Dwala Brown, Beverly Every year Psi Chapter Moore, Daphne Hornbuckle - Psi Chapter President, volunteers for community service back row: Eula Pruitt and Barry Moore projects during the months of November and December that include donating toiletries and business attire, making baby caps for a local hospital, serving the less fortunate and working diligently to prepare gifts for prisoners. The Feast of Sharing holiday celebration provided free dinners to over 12,000 people of all ages. The members of Psi Chapter, led by Chapter President Daphne Hornbuckle, the Men of Iota and the Pelatis Auxiliary formed two shifts and continuously served meals for over five hours. The Feast of Sharing was a rewarding experience for all. Central Market prepared the meals to include turkey with all the trimmings, pumpkin pie and ice cream. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by live music by blues singers, jazz bands, marching bands and other entertainers.

Ask Alma! Our sister didn’t tell us our father had died Dear Alma, I have a terrible problem concerning my dad. My mother and father were married for more than 50 years and had four children – three girls and a son – all now grown. We all work full-time jobs and live in different states. Only one – a sister – lives near my parents. She is not married and has no children. I recently called to wish my father a happy birthday, and my sister informed me that he was dead. She said she and my mother had him cremated and held a closed ceremony. She said that if the rest of us had called to check on him more frequently we would have known. We are all shocked, and some have vowed to never speak to her again. My dad had been sick for a while, and I know she felt that we all should have done more to help him and my mom. Still, she had no right not to tell us about his death. Neither did my mother, but she’s old and suffering with mild dementia. What should I do? Signed, Heartbroken Dear Heartbroken, My condolences to you and your family. Heaven help me, because I don’t know what to say next. When I read your email, I was completely stunned, so I read it again and again, and my brain wouldn’t take me to the next thought. I cannot imagine how you feel. Growing up, I often heard my mother say “death brings out the worst in families.” I had no

idea what she meant, but as I’ve gotten older, the meaning has become clearer. At this stage of my life, I have lost my big sister, Kim, my father and my mother. As I continue this life’s journey, I have accepted that parts of my heart will be forever broken. I thank God every day for my husband, son, stepsisters, aunts, nieces, nephew, many cousins and BFFs. But there’s something special about immediate family – the people you grew up with. They know you better than anybody else, and they love you anyway. The term “Life is short” means so much more to me now. I suspect many of my readers can relate. I say all of this to let you know that I’m familiar with the valley you have entered. I occupy a condo there. The loss of a parent is piercingly painful. Until it happens to you, you just don’t get it. No matter how old you are, how old your parents are, or how hard you try, you can’t prepare for it, and you’re never ready for it. Let’s talk about your sister for a minute. I understand the position she held as the lone caregiver. That was me, too. It’s more work than anyone can

contacted one of you to contact the others. All of you deserved the right to funeralize and mourn your father’s death. All of you deserved the right to support and be with your mother, and each other, during that time. I’d suggest you contact your family clergy and a mental health professional. Plan ahead for healthy eating during the holidays Holidays bring challenges for diabetics, others, Parkland dietitian says Holidays are a time for gathering with family and friends, giving thanks, and making plans for the New Year. It’s also a time when healthy eating often gives way to seemingly endless sweets and delectable delights. But while holiday treats may mean extra pounds to most, Parkland Health & Hospital System dietitians say November’s American Diabetes Month is the perfect time to start planning ahead, especially for those living with diabetes. “The holidays are a time to catch up with loved ones,” said Sharon Cox, a Registered Dietitian PAGE 15

at Parkland. “Try to place more focus on friends and family instead of the food.” But, even if you’re surrounded at parties with wonderful food, you don’t have to overeat, Cox said. Enjoy the foods that you may only have once a year, but keep the servings on the small size. If you’re planning on having a small portion of dessert, cut back on other foods that may cause your blood glucose levels to increase. Or you could substitute a sugar-free version of your favorite pumpkin or pecan pie for the meal. The state of Texas is home to nearly 2 million men, women and children with diabetes, over half a million of whom reside in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. While the national average is 8.3 percent, a disproportionate 9.7 percent of Texans have diabetes. Persons living with type 2 diabetes are also cautioned against

skipping meals in order to feast later. “If you don’t eat throughout the day, it’s going to be harder to keep your blood glucose in control,” warned Cox. “In addition, if you arrive hungry, you may go back for seconds, or even thirds. It’s like the old adage – don’t go to the grocery store when you’re hungry because you’ll tend to buy things you wouldn’t normally buy.” Eat your meals and snacks during the day to control your appetite, cravings at the party or dinner. When in doubt, Cox said to bring your own healthful dish(es) to the party. That way you’ll know the nutrition content of the food and won’t have to worry what the excess carbs may do to your blood glucose levels. During the hustle and bustle of the holiday seasons, people often forget to take care of themselves. “Sure, the holidays are busy, but plan time into each day for exercise !

NAAFRA speaks to the New Afrikan Family The National Afrikan Amerikan Family Reunion Association (NAAFRA), is a nonprofit movement founded and headquartered within the DallasFort Worth Metroplex Cedar Hill, Texas; For the purpose of uniting all New Afrikan families with reunion/ those not yet experiencing reunion celebrations in their annual famility activities, into a national network for the explicit purpose of establishing a new path to positive change. Ushering in a unique process necessary to improve the many educational, economic, health, employment (jobs), push back against mass-incarceration, reduce black on black violence, and the criminalization of black youth throughout our nation. By mobilizing all available resources found within the membership of all ‘NAAFRA Umbrella Alliance Aﬃliates’; by creating a franchising infrastructure under management, and ownership of New Afrikan reunion families of NAAFRA; by creating a long term financial plan, to build and create the long term jobs and businesses needed to strengthen and bring forward change to all New Afrikan Families in or nation, the Umbrella Alliance is dedicated. American hero to be honored on December 7 US Marine Corporal and US Army Pvt. Clarence T. Spencer, who died on February 4, 2007, is an American Hero for serving "four combat tours of duty on the frontlines" before his 25th birthday will be honored by the Texas Southern Christian Leadership Conference on December 7, 2013 at the John T White Rd Vintage Christmas Fair. A graduate of Fort Worth Dunbar High School, Pvt. Spencer is one of America's youngest soldiers to serve four combat tours during wartimes. "Everyone has a hero and Clarence Spencer is our American Hero," says Rev. Kyev Tatum, president of the SCLC and memorial coordinator.

Private Spencer was born in Texas on Nov. 26, 1982, and grew up in Fort Worth. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corp in Nov. 2001. While in the Marines, where he achieved the rank of corporal, Spencer served one tour in Afghanistan and three tours in Iraq. He later joined the Army in 2006, where he was assigned to Co. B, 1-12 CAB. Spencer, through all his four tours in the Middle East, earned four Purple Hearts. The Texas SCLC seeks the community's support for the creation of the Pvt. Clarence Spencer Memorial Park in Fort Worth, Texas and encourage everyone to join in this eﬀort.

In our library Why Our Addiction to Work Is Making Us Stupid, Depressed, Unhealthy, and Hurting Our Careers -- And What to Do Instead By Dr. Tasha Eurich Kmart’s recent announcement to open its doors at 6am on Thanksgiving Day sent shockwaves throughout the nation. Though bargain-seekers were thrilled, many are questioning the retail chain’s decision. In recent years, such “Thanksgiving Creep” has inspired multiple protests from employees, with one petition calling it “inhumane and inconsiderate.” And unfortunately, this problem doesn’t just exist in retail establishments around the holidays. Across all job types and industries, Americans are working more than ever. According to a recent Workforce Management study, since the great recession, 55% of employees have seen their workload increase, and 27% say it’s doubled. The constant pressure to do more with less, coupled with the belief that being busy means we’re important, is creating an unsustainable pattern. For many workers, taking time away from their jobs feels like an untenable luxury. Most European countries provide workers at least four weeks of vacation each year—Germany and Sweden are particularly generous with seven weeks. But a Center for Economic Policy and Research study reveals that 25 percent of US employees don’t take any vacation at all—either because they don’t use their accrued time or their employer doesn’t provide it. Why would anyone choose not to take the time away that they’ve rightfully earned? For many, fear is a factor—fear of missing out on promotions, topping the layoff list, being judged by bosses or coworkers, or the work that will inevitably pile up. Certainty, anyone can work fifty, sixty, or eighty hours per week—and take little time off—if they choose. But as it turns out, there are some profound consequences: 1. Working too much makes us stupider. Research has shown that long hours affect our brains. An American Journal of Epidemiology study followed British civil servants over five years to understand the relationship between long hours and brain functioning. Compared to those who worked forty hours per week, participants who worked more than fifty-five hours showed poorer vocabulary and reasoning skills. In plain English, working too much actually makes us stupider. PAGE 25

2. Working too much makes us depressed. Research has shown that long hours are also a significant risk factor for depression. A study published in PLoS ONE examined more than 2,000 workers in the United Kingdom over six years. They found that employees who worked more than eleven hours per day had more than twice the risk of depression than those who worked seven to eight hours per day. The relationship remained even when researchers statistically removed the influence of socioeconomic factors, chronic physical disease, smoking and alcohol use. 3. Working too much hurts our career advancement. When people think about how to get ahead in their career, most have a “more is better” approach. Just look at the hours worked at many law firms, tech companies, and Wall Street. However, more hours does not always equal better performance, and human beings have an upper limit for productivity on any given day. Somewhat counterintuitively, a 2006 Ernst & Young study that found a positive relationship between vacations (i.e., fewer hours overall) and performance: For each additional ten hours away from the office employees took, their performance reviews were eight percent higher the following year! 4. Working too much can actually kill us. In August of this year, a 21-year old Bank of America intern was found dead in his London dorm room. During the course of Moritz Erhardt’s demanding seven-week internship, he had pulled eight all-nighters in two weeks. Although Erhardt’s case is as rare as it is tragic, it reflects the general trend that working too much is simply not healthy. Luckily, when we take time away, these effects are mitigated. For example, the Framingham Heart study (a massive longitudinal research program started in 1948) reported that when workers take annual vacations, their risk for a heart attack is reduced by 30% in men and 50% in women. Two Tips for Taking Time Off Without Paying For It When You Return Hopefully, cashing in some of that vacation time feels more important than it did a just few minutes ago. But if the idea of taking time off still feels difficult or stressful, here are a few tips. First, it’s okay to start small. Short vacations have similar positive effects as long ones; one study from Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands found that even vacations of just a few days increased health and well-being.

And because benefits from most vacations fade after 5 days, frequent, shorter vacations may actually be better. So instead of blocking off two weeks and paying for it when you return, try a long weekend every month or two instead. Second, it’s okay to check e-mail a few times while you’re away. The above study also revealed that people who worked during vacations still showed increases in health and wellbeing, albeit smaller ones. For many workers, being able to check in at work eases anxiety. So, within the bounds of reason, go for it! Just don’t let things get out of hand, lest your spouse or partner lock your iPhone in the hotel safe. Whether you’re being forced to work this Thanksgiving or not, the holidays are a great time to re-prioritize. It’s important to remember that family and friends are life’s true gifts. After all, on their deathbeds, few people are likely to say “I wish I had

spent more time at work.” So for goodness sake—take some time off!
