Message to the People... Living a life... The death of President Nelson Mandela touched the lives of so many of all ages. He was the good that we each deeply want to see in ourselves. Upon hearing the news, immediately I Cheryl Smith thought about an old friend, Pius Njawe, and recalled sitting in the offices of Le Messager Newspaper in Cameroon, looking at a picture of Pius and President Mandela together. The two had similar stories. While President Mandela spent 27 years in prison, all because of his desire to eradicate injustices; Pius Njawe spent about a year in prison, but he was arrested more than 125 times as he used his publication to address social ills and corrupt governments. In addition to receiving the Percy Qoboza Award from the National Association of Black Journalists, in 2000, Pius was named one of International Press Institute's 50 World Press Freedom Heroes of the previous 50 years. During my week-long visit it was apparent that Pius was held in high esteem by the “people.” Whether we were at the airport, traveling through various areas or visiting businesses, people showed their love for and appreciation of Pius and Le Messager. He was their hero, an unyielding soldier in the struggle for freedom. It was a sad day almost a year after LeMessager celebrated its 30th year in existence, Pius was killed in a car accident while visiting America. In his obituary, the New York Times described him as "a symbol of opposition to the autocratic regime of (President) Paul Biya." There are so many other valiant men and women who have occupied time and space on this earth, leaving an indelible mark, while also leaving the world in a much better place. As this year comes to a close, and as we prepare to celebrate the life of President Mandela, it is imperative that we reexamine, reassess and possibly re-direct ourselves. After all we have so much and can do so much more if we focus on living a life worthy of celebrating. In July under the leadership of Rep. Helen Giddings and a stellar committee we observed Nelson Mandela International Day. The only thing that would have made it better would have been having President Mandela with us. The cover portrait is the beautiful work of Nile Livingston. The talented young artist is making her mark. I know we will be hearing more from her and seeing more of her exquisite works. And, when her time on this earth comes to an end, her legacy, like that of Pius and Mr. Mandela, will be worthy of a celebration. I know, it’s easier to just exist, to live from day to day, doing your own thing. Those are the people, however, that the Rev. Al Sharpton says are the hardest to deliver a eulogy for. Instead the eulogist has to either go off on a tangent about some story that will be soothing to the family or “hallucinate” a eulogy. Mr. Mandela could have easily denounced his beliefs and received an entirely different outcome. But who would have benefited? Instead he fought the good fight, standing for what was right, regardless of the penalty, and like other great leaders he will always be remembered. We each have to make a decision about our lives. By choosing to live, over just existing, this world would be such a better place. After all, what’s the difference between someone who is on life support for 50 years and someone who just exists for 50 years? Not a thing! But that person who really lives, oh they are the ones whose shoulders we stand on. Can someone stand on your shoulders? Are we living lives worth remembering or celebrating?

Rolihlahla “Nelson” Mandela Rolihlahla Mandela was born into the Madiba clan in Mvezo, Transkei, on July 18, 1918, to Nonqaphi Nosekeni and Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, principal counsellor to the Acting King of the Thembu people, Jongintaba Dalindyebo. His father died when he was a child and the young Rolihlahla became a ward of Jongintaba at the Great Place in Mqhekezweni. Hearing the elder’s stories of his ancestor’s valour during the wars of resistance, he dreamed also of making his own contribution to the freedom struggle of his people.
1941. There he worked as a mine security officer and after meeting Walter Sisulu, an estate agent, who introduced him to Lazar Sidelsky. He then did his articles through the firm of attorneys Witkin Eidelman and Sidelsky. Meanwhile he began studying for an LLB at the University of the Witwatersrand. By his own
Nelson Mandela, while increasingly politically involved from 1942, only joined the African National Congress in 1944 when he helped formed the ANC Youth League. In 1944 he married Walter Sisulu’s cousin Evelyn Mase, a nurse. They had two sons Madiba Thembekile ‘Thembi’ and Makgatho and two daughters both called Makaziwe, the first of whom died in infancy. They effectively separated in 1955 and divorced in 1958. Nelson Mandela rose through the ranks of the ANCYL and through its work the ANC adopted in 1949 a more radical mass-based policy, the Programme of Action.
He attended primary school in Qunu where his teacher Miss Mdingane gave him the name Nelson, in accordance with the custom to give all school children “Christian” names.
In 1952 he was chosen at the National Volunteer-in-Chief of the Defiance Campaign with Maulvi Cachalia as his Deputy. This campaign of civil disobedience against six unjust laws was a joint programme between the ANC and the South African Indian Congress. He and 19 others were charged under the Suppression of Communism Act for their part in the campaign and sentenced to nine months hard labour suspended for two years.
He completed his Junior Certificate at Clarkebury Boarding Institute and went on to Healdtown, a Wesleyan secondary school of some repute, where he matriculated.

ANC President Chief Albert Luthuli about his trip. He was charged with leaving the country illegally and inciting workers to strike. He was convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment which he began serving in Pretoria Local Prison. On 27 May 1963 he was transferred to Robben Island and returned to Pretoria on 12 June. Within a month police raided a secret hide-out in Rivonia used by ANC and Communist Party activists and several of his comrades were arrested. Graça Machel, widow of Mozambican president Samora Machel, married Nelson Mandela on his 80th birthday in
Nelson Mandela was arrested in a countrywide police swoop of 156 activists on 5 December 1955, which led to the 1956 Treason Trial. Men and women of all races found themselves in the dock in the marathon trial that only ended when the last 28 accused, including Mr. Mandela were acquitted on 29 March 1961.
In October 1963 Nelson Mandela joined nine others on trial for sabotage in what became known as the Rivonia Trial. Facing the death penalty his words to the court at the end of his famous ‘Speech from the Dock’ on 20 April 1964 became immortalized: “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an
On 11 January 1962 using the adopted name David Motsamayi, Nelson Mandela left South Africa secretly. He travelled around Africa and visited England to gain support for the armed struggle. He received military training in Morocco and Ethiopia and returned to South Africa in July 1962. He was arrested in a police roadblock outside Howick on 5 August while returning from KwaZulu-Natal where he briefed PAGE 5

In 1988 he was treated for Tuberculosis and was transferred on 7 December 1988 to a house at Victor Verster Prison near Paarl. He was released from its gates on Sunday 11 February 1990, nine days after the unbanning of the ANC and the PAC and nearly four months after the release of the remaining Rivonia comrades. Throughout his imprisonment he had rejected at least three conditional offers of release. Nelson Mandela immersed himself into official talks to end white minority rule and in 1991 was elected ANC President to replace his ailing friend Oliver Tambo. In 1993 he and President FW de Klerk jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize and on 27 April 1994 he voted for the first time in his life.
True to his promise Nelson Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one term as President. He continued to work with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund he set up in 1995 and established the Nelson Mandela Foundation and The Mandela-Rhodes Foundation.
During the trial on 14 June 1958 Nelson Mandela married a social worker Winnie Madikizela. They had two daughters Zenani and Zindziswa. The couple divorced in 1996.
As soon as he and his colleagues were acquitted in the Treason Trial Nelson Mandela went underground and began planning a national strike for 29, 30 and 31 March. In the face of a massive mobilization of state security the strike was called off early. In June 1961 he was asked to lead the armed struggle and helped to establish Umkhonto weSizwe (Spear of the Nation).
with Sisulu, Mhlaba and Mlangeni. Kathrada joined them in October. When he returned to the prison in November 1985 after prostate surgery Nelson Mandela was held alone. Justice Minister Kobie Coetsee had visited him in hospital. Later Nelson Mandela initiated talks about an ultimate meeting between the apartheid government and the ANC.
On 10 May 1994 he was inaugurated South Africa’s first democratically elected President. On his 80th birthday in 1998 he married Graça Machel, his third wife.
On 21 March 1960 police killed 69 unarmed people in a protest at Sharpeville against the pass laws. This led to the country’s first state of emergency on 31 March and the banning of the ANC and the Pan Africanist Congress on 8 April. Nelson Mandela and his colleagues in the Treason Trial were among the thousands detained during the state of emergency.
Days before the end of the Treason Trial Nelson Mandela travelled to Pietermaritzburg to speak at the All-in Africa Conference, which resolved he should write to Prime Minister Verwoerd requesting a non-racial national convention, and to warn that should he not agree there would be a national strike against South Africa becoming a republic.

Texas Governor Ann Richards, Nelson Mandela, Dominique de Menil, Senator Ellis. Houston, Texas, 1991. “The Honorable Nelson Mandela embodied the hopes, dreams, aspirations and values of all who seek justice against tremendous odds. He responded to unfathomable violence with peace and courage, and in doing so he forever changed the world.” Roslyn Brock Chairman of the NAACP Board of Directors “Nelson Mandela’s legacy remains an inspiration for the work of the NAACP. In Mandela’s name we must continue to bring attention to all aspects of global apartheid characterized by poverty, inequality, discrimination, and prejudice of all kind.” Dr. David Emmanuel Goatley Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the NAACP Board of Directors “The world has lost one of the great statesmen of our time – a man who spent 27 years in prison because he believed in the cause of equality. His loss should set an example for political leaders still here, that there is a need to lead and govern in a manner that is equitable to all people.” Bill Lucy member of the NAACP National Board of Directors and labor leader
“President Mandela was humanity’s greatest living hero. His unwavering sense of justice and peace transformed a nation and inspired the world.” Lorraine Miller Interim NAACP President and CEO "Texas joins the rest of the world in mourning the loss of Nelson Mandela, one of history’s bravest leaders. His sacrifice and courage in the face of unspeakable hardship demonstrated the extent to which some must fight for their freedom. We must all honor his legacy as we continue the struggle to improve all peoples’ lives. My thoughts and prayers are with the Mandela family." Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) “Nelson Mandela has been a courageous hero of the international civil rights movement. His life stands as a timeless example of freedom, justice and sacrifice for the greater good of South Africa and the world. As the first black President of South Africa, his courageous lifelong commitment to the principles of democracy have - and continue to - inspire me. Even today in America, the PAGE 6

freest nation on Earth, we should strive to live by his example as our fight for justice and equal rights continues.” U.S. Representative Marc Veasey, TX-33 My condolences to the family and loved ones of Nelson Mandela and to the people of the Republic of South Africa and all of Africa. I had the opportunity to meet Nelson Mandela on several occasions. It is true that he was a transformational leader; I also visited Robben Island and saw the prison where he lived and worked and the cell in which he was incarcerated. Mandela’s is a very moving journey, one that carried the dreams and aspirations of an entire nation and world of people ready for change and alleviation of suffering. And to all of us who work for the day that oppression is a phenomenon unknown to humankind. Cynthia McKinney Former U.S. Rep. “Today the world lost a hero of the anti-apartheid movement and a model for the pursuit of justice and peace worldwide,” said Congressman Cuellar. “Nelson Mandela’s dignity in the face of fear and discrimination created a path for all of us in our quest to build a fairer world. He inspired the people of South Africa to move beyond one of the most painful period of their history and embrace equal rights for all of their citizens. Mandela leaves a legacy of striving to find the good and the promise in all people and I hope we will see the likes of such a leader again. I send my condolences to the family of Mandela and to the people of South Africa.” Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX28) To all of our partners in South Africa, today we lost a great man. But we really didn’t lose him, because we know that to be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord. Iit was the passing of a great man, Nelson Mandela, who I refer to as the father of democracy. Our prayers go out with a nation, our prayers go out for a nation, our prayers go out for a people who had the opportunity to reap the benefits of a great man of God. We are grateful and thankful for the results of this man’s life. In the love, in the unity, in just the faith that the people of South Africa could walk in as a result of what he demonstrated. We celebrate his life, and we celebrate his legacy. Creflo Dollar founder and senior pastor of World Changers Church International !

We Remember, Honor, and Celebrate the Extraordinary Life & Legacy of Nelson Mandela By Marc Morial President, National Urban League
"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." -- Nelson Mandela There are few men or women who leave such an indelible imprint and impact on the world that they are remembered, honored and celebrated by nations near and far for centuries after they depart. There are few people for whom even all the words in every language fail to convey the magnitude and meaning of their lives. Without a doubt in mind or heart, I know that Nelson Mandela is one among a very select few. His dedication, perseverance, forgiveness, and purpose – his life – sparked an inextinguishable fire in the souls of freedom fighters not only in South Africa, but everywhere. The light that he shared will forever serve as an international beacon for fairness, justice and hope for all disadvantaged, impoverished and oppressed people from every corner of the world. Nelson Mandela gave new meaning to the word “inspiration.” After spending 27 years of a life sentence as an apartheid regime political prisoner, he emerged, not with bitterness – but instead with a steadfast resolve to
complete his life’s work. His remarkable journey serves as an indisputable example of forgiveness in the face of persecution and triumph through tribulation.
I consider myself at once fortunate, humbled and proud to have been a part of the great work of Nelson Mandela’s life during the 1980’s here in the United States. While attending Georgetown University Law Center in 1981, I co-led an effort to boycott the cafeteria operator because of its investments in South Africa. During this same period, I was a member of the leadership team of the National Black Law Students Association that pushed for divestment of South African investments by U.S. companies. Early in my career, I was arrested at the South African Embassy as part of a mass, peaceful organized protest led by Walter Fauntroy, Mary Frances Berry and Randall Robinson in support of U.S.
economic sanctions against South Africa. As co-leader of the New Orleans Anti-Apartheid Coalition, I helped to successfully advocate for the New
Orleans Public Employee Pension Board’s divestment in U.S. companies who had holdings in South Africa. When the U.S. Congress ultimately passed sanctions against South Africa, I could only hope that Nelson Mandela knew that his army now extended beyond the borders of South Africa to subsequent generations of freedom activists and advocates around the world – even in the world’s greatest democracy – helping to continue the work he started. After the election of President Mandela, as mayor of New Orleans I signed an economic and friendship agreement in 1994 between Johannesburg and New Orleans, one of the first U.S. cities to do so. It was an indescribable honor. Nelson Mandela’s
efforts to create a new, multi-racial democracy weren’t just an example of unwavering leadership, humanity and compassion for me, but also for the countless millions who will follow and study him as one of the world’s great leaders for centuries to come. I often wonder if his parents knew when they named him Rolihlahla (common translation: “troublemaker”) how prophetic that was or how ironic it would be that he would grow up to be an international symbol of peacemaking. But the “troublemaking” that Nelson Mandela undertook was of a different kind. It was the kind that sees legislated injustice, race-based inequality and economic despair and seeks to disrupt an institutionalized system of oppression and discrimination. It is the kind that motivates all of us in the Urban League Movement to continue to fight for opportunity parity and economic equality every day in hundreds of communities across America. Nelson Mandela gave a voice to those who had been silenced. He brought hope to those who had been stripped of their dreams. He awakened a nation – and ultimately a world – to the boundless possibilities of following one’s purpose. Today, we stand with the people of South Africa and with the international community in mourning the loss of Nelson Mandela. We remember, honor, and celebrate his extraordinary life and legacy. The world could use a few more “Rolihlahlas.” "Our march to freedom is irreversible. We must not allow fear to stand in our way." -- Nelson Mandela
The Chief Architect
Arguably the world's greatest moral leader, his contributions to freedom and equality across our world are countless. He showed us what true leadership and compassion is, and its potential to change the world. I will forever treasure the privilege of spending time with him. My first meeting with Mr. Mandela in 1995 was a unique experience that was an absolute realization that I was standing in the presence of greatness. Later meetings were just as inspirational and I continued to be in awe of both his charisma and his humility. In response to his infamous 27 years of imprisonment he showed the world a sermon stressing that only love can conquer hate. Mr. Mandela's refusal to hate and his lack of bitterness in the face of bigotry and hatred continue to stand as an example for the world to follow. Though South Africa elected him as its president, to many he was much more; a moral compass in a time of great intolerance and turmoil. In effect, he was PAGE 9

seen as President of the world. And while the very soul of South Africa, his life was indeed also a gift to a global society. His struggle and search for freedom, justice, and equality for all South Africans gave rise to added freedom, justice, and equality for all people. In summary, Mr. Mandela committed his life to the fierce struggle to eliminate the notion of better or lessor and superior and inferior human beings. He gave everything to the struggle and he would have given his life if need be for the liberation of South Africa. The miracle of 1994 could not have been achieved by any one person. Few would deny that "Mandela" was the chief architect. South Africa will forever miss Nelson Mandela, as will we all. His influence on the fight against global inequality will continue to live on in our hearts and souls. Let the world smile and rejoice for the 95 years we were given with Nelson Mandela. Rep. U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson mourns death of World Leader Nelson Mandela Today, the world lost one of its greatest leaders with the passing of former South African president, Nelson Mandela. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson had the privilege to meet and work with Nelson Mandela and issued the following statement following his passing: “Today the world mourns the loss one of its greatest heroes. President Nelson Mandela was truly a beacon of hope and an inspiration not only to the people of his country, but to the entire world. I am so sad to hear of his passing, and I pray for the people of South Africa as they grieve over the loss of Mandela. I have been fortunate to not only meet, but work with Nelson Mandela during my career. I have been able to draw inspiration and guidance from the examples he has set. He was the ultimate “uniter” that not only brought an end to apartheid in South Africa, but served as an example for many nations on how to peacefully bring about democratic change. I am grateful to have known and learned from this great man and I will keep his family and country in my prayers.” Congresswoman Johnson pictured with Nelson Mandela during a 90’s trip to South Africa I am deeply saddened to have lost such an enduring symbol of freedom and liberty; Nelson Mandela was an elder statesman who embodied the very essence of a servant-leader. History cannot contain the lasting impact of such an extraordinary life. Rather, his exceptionalism will live in the hearts and minds of those of us who were fortunate enough to have witnessed his greatness. There are few words capable of encapsulating the measure of such a masterful life, except to impart this departing dispatch: "Well done Madiba, well done!" Bishop T.D. Jakes "Nelson Mandela's death constitutes the enormous loss of a great man who deserves his rest. We were lucky to have him on this earth at this time, and his lessons of struggle, confrontation and love will never leave us." Rinku Sen President, Race Forward "Nelson Mandela will live in history as an inspiration for defenders of liberty around the globe. He stood firm for decades on the principle that until all South Africans enjoyed equal liberties he would not leave prison himself, declaring in his autobiography, 'Freedom is indivisible; the chains on any one of my people were the chains on all of them, the chains on all of my people were the chains on me.' Because of his epic fight against injustice, an entire nation is now free. We mourn his loss and offer our condolences to his family and the people of South Africa." U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas “Through his valiant struggle against the injustices of apartheid, Nelson Mandela became a symbol of what one person can do to change the world. His life and legacy will remain an inspiration to people everywhere who believe in the power of freedom to create stronger nations, and forge a better PAGE 10

world for future generations. Today, the prayers of Texans are with Mandela’s family, his friends, and the people of South Africa.” Gov. Rick Perry “I join with people of all races worldwide in mourning the death of this great lion of African liberation, but celebrating his magnificent life of service to the cause of freedom, human rights and justice for all humanity. Nelson Mandela’s life and leadership exemplified the highest courage, dignity and dedication to human liberation. His name will always resonate in my heart, as it does in the hearts of millions of people all over the world. His death marks the end of an era, when leaders of unsurpassed courage and integrity walked among us.” Bernice A. King CEO of the King Center “With the passing of Nelson Mandela, we have lost an individual who not only freed his home of South Africa from racial hatred, but inspired the world to peacefully resist injustice and intolerance. We will forever remember Nelson Mandela as the wonderful man and courageous leader who ended apartheid at home and changed the course of human history for all. Unbowed by racial animosity and decades behind bars, Nelson Mandela was a revolutionary force for nonviolence and justice. I still remember the humble man that visited Detroit, just months following his release from prison, to organize for his political movement in South Africa and speak with Rosa Parks. And I will always treasure the memories I have, just four short years later, of the voyage I made with President Clinton and Harry Belafonte to attend Nelson Mandela’s installation as President of South Africa. While we mourn his passage, we know that Madiba’s legacy of fighting for freedom and independence will live on.” Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) !

Mr. Nelson Mandela - Freedom Fighter Today LDF honors the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa and a leader in the struggle against apartheid. Mr. Mandela was a hero to not only blacks and whites in South Africa, but to people all around the world struggling to end oppression and injustice. He was a freedom fighter, a political prisoner and later a president. But Mr. Mandela began his career as a lawyer, creating the first black law firm in South Africa with his partner Oliver Tambo. After he became President of South Africa in 1994, Mr. Mandela invited LDF lawyers to come to South Africa to work with an organization in which he had been a member — the Black Lawyers'
Association of South Africa. LDF Director-Counsel Ted Shaw led delegations to South Africa where, as guests of President Mandela, our lawyers shared their knowledge of equal protection and due process constitutional law. Although Mr. Mandela spent twentyseven years in prison, he insisted on reconciliation rather than vengeance.
After he was released in 1990, he peacefully negotiated with those who had imprisoned him — for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He became the beloved leader of all South Africans and an inspiration to millions around the world.
Thank you, Mr. Mandela. Sherrilyn A. Ifill President and Director Counsel

chance to take their class of 30 students to see the movie. Three exclusive movie clips are now available for view at www.sharemylesson.com/ mandelafilm, in addition to primary sources made accessible thanks to the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg. “Lessons based on this rare and true hero are multidimensional and multidisciplinary. Teachers will be able to show clips of the movie in class to bring Mandela’s incredible story alive and lead students through discussions that will help broaden their thinking about Mandela’s imprisonment, his yearning for a democratic and nondiscriminatory country, and the legacy of his sacrifice and accomplishments,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten. The motion picture tells the inspirational story of Mandela, from his humble beginnings in Transkei, South Africa, to his 27-year incarceration for treason, to his eventual release to become the president of a fully participatory, democratic South Africa. Mandela’s story and the film provide educators with an opportunity to dive into the issues of freedom and forgiveness, equality and equanimity, reconciliation and redemption. The movie opened in select cities Nov. 29, with a nationwide release Dec. 25. I MESSENGER

Following the passing of former South African president Nelson Mandela, TV One will commemorate his life and achievements with the airing of documentaries Nelson Mandela: One Man and Music for Mandela, as well as with ongoing coverage on News One Now, the only daily live morning news program focusing on news and analysis from the African American perspective. Mandela: One Man navigates Mandela's journey through life, from the dedication he demonstrated as a young activist in the African National Congress, the struggles he experienced in his years on the run and in hiding, the darkness of his time as a political prisoner and the triumph of his inauguration as the first black president of South Africa. The hour-long documentary also charts the history of racism in the country, beginning with the arrival of the National Party, through the upheaval and segregation of apartheid, and finally the dismantling of the cruel regime in the 1990s. Music for Mandela explores the role music played in the life of if the iconic leader. Through the duration of his prison term to the present day celebrations of his legacy, the music born out of Mandela's inspiring journey is discussed by his closest friends, former exiled musicians, current international artists and community volunteers. Combining striking visuals with songs stemming from a wide range of musical genres, the documentary is not only a tribute to the man himself, but also to the ultimate power of music to motivate and educate. “The passing of Nelson Mandela allows us to reflect on the lifetime of struggle and perseverance that one extraordinary individual endured to better not only the lives of his fellow South Africans, but also of people all over the world,” remarked Alfred Liggins, President and CEO, TV One. “TV One mourns his passing and celebrates his legacy.”

"We mourn the loss of this great man and that of the people of South Africa. He began as a great freedom fighter to regain land and freedom for the native Africans there. Unfortunately, the living conditions for his people got horribly worse while he was president and to date has not changed as other presidents have followed him. Thomas Muhammad Co-Chair of the Green Party Black Caucus "Humanity has lost one of the most heroic and most gracious figures of the 20th century. Nelson Mandala's lifelong struggle for freedom and equality may never be equaled. Let us not be sad at his death, but let us rejoice in his example of never giving up for the dream of a South Africa free of apartheid. THE HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE amille Bradfield
By Jamille Bradfield
CATCHING FIRE is the second installment based on Suzanne Collins’ fictional trilogy, THE HUNGER GAMES. Directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Simon Beaufoy and Michael Arndt (screenplay), THE HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE picks up where the first film left off, with District 12 tributes Katniss Everdeen (Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) back home fresh off of their 74th Annual Hunger Games win. It’s not long after they are back home with their family and friends that they have to leave again, this time on the customary “Victor’s Tour,” where they visit the citizens in what’s left of the dystopian world that is Panem, formerly known as North America. Sounds harmless enough except for one problem…the Capitol’s fearless leader, President Snow (Golden Globe winner Donald Sutherland) worries that there is a rebellion brewing in the districts as a result of Katniss and Peeta’s victory. PAGE 14
Firemen extinguish flames at crash site
!
So, as if fighting to the death once was not sufficient, the Tribute darlings of District 12 are thrown a major monkey wrench in their plans when President Snow announces the 75th Annual Hunger Games as the third Quarter Quell – a special edition of the Hunger Games that only occurs every 25 years and requires the most recent victor(s) to compete against extremely skilled past victors of the Games. Naturally, Katniss meets this news with a ‘you-gotta-be-kiddingme’ reaction, considering she just finished a brutal round of the infamous Games. A n e v e r- p r e s e n t subplot is the pseudo love-triangle between Katniss, Peeta and Gale, portrayed by the dreamy, Liam Hemsworth. The relationship is categorized as “artificial” because Katniss and Peeta are forced to convince the people of the districts that they are
genuinely in love as a distraction to snuff out the spark of an uprising. However, Katniss really loves Gale, her romantic interest back home, but the more she has to pretend to be in love with Peeta, the more her feelings grow for her fellow Tribute/ survivor. Armed with their trusty Hunger Games dream team including previous victor and mentor, H a y m i t c h Abernathy (Emmy w i n n e r Wo o d y Harrelson), overthe-top escort, Effie (Elizabeth Banks) and brilliant personal stylist, Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), Katniss and Peeta prepare for the Quarter Quell. Also reprising his role as the flamboyant host of the televised Games is Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman. Joining the cast in the sequel are Golden Globe winner !
Jeffrey Wright as Beetee, a Quarter Quell competitor who is an electronics and wiring expert, and Oscar winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee, the new head game maker. As sequels go in the action/adventure genre, THE HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE does not disappoint. It is chock-full of adrenaline and gripping scenes. The arena is a step above the arena setting in the original film and the battle to be the lone survivor is thrilling. Diehard fans of THE HUNGER GAMES novels will be thoroughly entertained with this latest feature film adaptation. Rated PG-13 (for intense thematic violent material and disturbing images — all involving teens), THE HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE has a running time of two hours and 26 minutes. The Lionsgate film opened nationwide in theaters on November 22, 2013.

FAMU School of Business hosts Boot Camp for Retired NBA Players TALLHASSEE, Fla. – Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) School of Business and Industry (SBI) has partnered with the National Basketball Retirement Players Association (NBRPA) to host a boot-camp style certificate program for ex-NBA players called, Life After Retirement: Growing Successful Business Ventures. “The program is focused on helping retired NBA players to develop business skills to start or maintain successful business ventures during retirement,” said FAMU SBI Dean Shawnta
Friday-Stroud, who pitched the program to the NBRPA during their annual convention in September. “It will take them through business plan preparation and culminate with an opportunity for the retired players to present their plans in front of professors, certified business analysts, and a small business banker.” The inaugural class of nine participants will spend four weekends starting in December developing a business plan. The certificate program will provide tools and frameworks for starting
and enhancing business ventures in the areas of franchising, financial services, real estate, and insurance by engaging in interactive teambased cases studies, reviewing balance sheets, and performing cash flow analyses. Former players that are successful entrepreneurs will serve as guest lecturers during the weekend boot camps. If participants complete all incamp and between-camp assignments, at the conclusion of the series, they will leave with a sound, vetted business plan.
“We are very excited to partner with Florida A&M University’s School of Business and Industry for a wonderful program that will assist NBRPA Members looking to build a successful business career,” said NBRPA President and CEO Arnie D. Fielkow. “Education and learning are the backbone of NBRPA programming as we help former NBA, ABA, Harlem Globetrotters and WNBA players transition into a successful life after the game.”

Organization selected by Citi Foundation and Low Income Investment Fund as part of "Partners in Progress" Initiative Dallas, TX - - Hatcher Station Village, a modern, mixed-used development in South Dallas, came closer to reality with an announcement in New York City that Frazier Revitalization, Inc., (FRI) received a $250,000 grant from Citi Foundation to increase economic progress as part of the Partners in Progress (PIP) initiative. The initiative, backed by the Citi Foundation and the Low Income Investment Fund (LIIF), is designed to increase capacity of trusted local organizations to create strong, resilient neighborhoods and paths to economic opportunity. "Hatcher Station Village is a catalyst for making connections with education, jobs, health care and community," said FRI project leader Andrea Hills, who is in New York to receive the grant. According to recent studies, 15 million children go back to school each year with undiagnosed vision problems. Educators and doctors agree that poor vision can lead to other problems in the classroom. “It is important that children get their eyes examined,” said Dr. Bob Day, a long-time resident of Garland and OD with VSP Vision Care, the largest not-for-profit vision care provider in the United States. Frazier neighborhood of South Dallas/Fair Park." Frazier Revitalization, Inc. (FRI), born out of the dreams of Frazier Neighborhood residents, was formed in 2005 for the purpose of providing leadership for implementation of the Frazier Neighborhood Master Plan prepared by noted architect and urban planner Antonio Di Mambro. FRI's mission is to be a catalyst for the revitalization and transformation of Frazier by coordinating, supporting, and assisting in economic and cultural development.
Through the PIP grant, FRI and 12 other grantees will be able to initiate or deepen their efforts to become "community quarterbacks." In this role, FRI will lead the development or expansion of local stakeholder networks to improve places-the physical environment of a community including housing, transit, and safety- and create opportunities for people-such as jobs, child development, education, and health. PIP funding will enable grantees to engage and align an expanded range of partners, share knowledge, and use data to drive project design.
"The Partners in Progress initiative is focused on identifying and supporting organizations that have the credibility and potential to be local community development champions," said Pamela Flaherty, President & CEO of the Citi Foundation. The impetus behind the PIP initiative came from Investing in What Works for America's Communities, a book LIIF copublished in 2012 with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, which asserts that flexible and dynamic community quarterbacks could transform local community development efforts that are often fragmented and duplicative. The Citi Foundation supported LIIF's work on the original book, and the PIP initiative now aims to advance the community quarterback model across the nation.
The proposed Hatcher Station Village is located on a 7-acresite across the street from the DART's Green Line Hatcher Station. While plans are still being developed, the easy access to DART makes this project a cornerstone for economic opportunity in South Dallas, connecting the neighborhood to resources in health care, education, job training and employment.

History of Orange Blossom Classic shared in American Airlines Magazine Tallahassee, Fla. – The historic 1967 Orange Blossom Classic between Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Grambling University is the cover story of the November 15 issue of American Airlines’ publication, American Way. Written by Samuel G. Freedman, NY Times columnist and author of the book Breaking the Line, the article describes
how two rival football teams, with two star quarterbacks under the leadership of two legendary coaches revolutionized college sports and transformed the NFL. FAMU coach Jake Gaither with quarterback Ken Riley, along with Grambling’s Eddie Robinson and James Harris made a profound difference in how America finally came to appreciate the talent of black athletes. For a 30-year period, the Orange Blossom Classic football game in Miami wans the most important annual sporting event and the largest annual gathering of any kind for African Americans. The Orange Blossom Classic was founded by J.R.E. Lee Jr., the son of Florida A&M University’s president, at a time when blacks were not allowed to compete in bowl games. In 1933, FAMU beat Howard in front of 2,000 fans at a “blacks-only” ballpark in Jacksonville, Fla. For 13 years, the contest hopped around the Florida cities of Orlando, Jacksonville and Tampa before becoming an annual event in Miami in 1947. During the first Classic game in Miami, a racial milestone was met. For the first time, black fans were permitted in the main stands of the Orange Bowl. “When a Florida A&M Rattler receiver named Nathaniel “Traz” Powell caught a 45-yard pass to break a tie with Hampton Institute, he became the first black man to score a touchdown on the Orange Bowl’s previously whites-only gridiron,” Freedman writes in the article. “For years to come, blacks around the state would speak about his touchdown as if he’d been Rosa Parks refusing to surrender her seat.” To read the article in its entirety, visit http://hub.aa.com/en/aw/orange-bowlclassic-football-black-history . SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING Plant yourself in good soil By James A. Washington
During a recent sermon, I found myself once again being told that the devil is liar. He specializes in deceit. Coupled with harden not your heart, when you hear the Word of the Lord, it made me wonder that the voice you hear urging you to resist God’s Word must be the devil’s. When these two voices collide in your spirit, one needs to be careful; deep water ahead. One of my favorite verses of scripture is “Some people are like seed along the path where the Word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the Word sown in them.” Mark 4:15. If you could only recognize, when you’re being fooled or manipulated or being used by someone or something, I believe if you could, most of us would handle the situation accordingly. Emotionally, we have all probably reacted or responded appropriately when we discovered we were being used or made a fool of by somebody. I’m guessing it wasn’t a pretty sight for the perpetrator of such an act towards you. I know after pain, then comes anger. After anger, usually comes action. It’s definitely not pretty. If only the devil would show his hand the way that God does His. Now it starts to make sense. The devil is a liar because he has to be. He specializes in presenting situations in such a manner that he’s the last person you suspect of making your life a real hell on earth. “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness.” 2 Corinthians 11: 14-15. So, for a moment, let’s take another look at this thing. It would appear that when Satan is hard at work in your life, it is probably at a time when you are most likely trying to hear from God. The PAGE 21
bible says watch out here because it is at these times that so called friends, advice givers, supporters and confidants will show up and “help,” “guide” and “console” us. If the truth be told, you can look back now and realize it was the devil at work all along. I know I can. If we only knew then what we know now, it would have been relatively easy to make the right choices. But the devil is so cunning that at your moment of truth, he sees to it that we blame others, rationalize our actions, defend our sin(s) and otherwise fault life for what we have total control over. In the name of everything but Satan, we explain it all away and thereby clear a path straight to hell, when all we really had to do was listen to that still deep voice from within that belongs to God. Rarely do we permit ourselves the time and depth of thought to recognize He was in the middle of many a regrettable morning after. If we did, then the Word of God would have emerged out of what appeared to be chaos and confusion to lead us and guide us out of the mess of the moment. Once you get this, it’s hard to lose your way or be fooled into believing you’re actually on the right path. At this point with a little thought, how we live becomes second nature to why we live. The point I’m trying to make is that recognition, this recognition can be a powerful thing. When you understand the why of life, the how becomes so much easier. “Be careful then, how you live-not as unwise but wise, making

She’s Still Not our Sister is worth watching By Cheryl Smith I Messenger
While actors, talk show pundits and viewers are lamenting the saturation of the airwaves by reality shows, there are some quality shows on the horizon, and interestingly, there are new and local directors, producers and actors who are filling the void in programming. Ve r n o n S n o o p Robinson is the director of She’s Still Not Our Sister, the dramedy surrounding four sisters and their loveable aunt, played by veteran actress Jackee Harry. Adapted from the hit gospel stage play, She’s Not Our Sister, this series evolves around three sisters, who as they deal with their estranged father’s death, they also learn that they have another sister. People will tell you there’s nothing like a funeral to bring out the ugly in any family, and that’s just what happens from time to time as the four beautiful, talented young ladies try to adhere to their father’s will in order to inherit the millions he has left behind. That key stipulation, however, is that they must live together for a period of time. Now, if you’re expecting a lot of cat-fighting and stuff made for reality shows, that is not what you get from She’s Not Our Sister.
You have four women, plus auntie, dealing with everyday issues surrounding relationships, finances, work, education and living. Vivian dropped out of school to take care of the family and she is played by Kellita Smith of the Bernie Mac Show; then there’s Cynthia who is about to be married, played by Drew Sidora of The Game and most r e c e n t l y, t h e T L C Movie; Allison is the “new” sister played by Jazsmin Lewis and Azur-De Johnson plays Deniece, the recent college grad who wants to go to law school And yes, there are men with key roles, instead of being relegated to man-bashing scenes or the stereotypical trifling characters. Clifton Powell is the somewhat flirtatious R e v. B e c k l e y a n d D’Andre who marries into the family, is played by Christian Keyes. What makes each episode interesting to watch, has to be the exchanges between the characters. The writing is real and true to life, as opposed to some of the mediocre writing we are subjected to where everyone is jockeying for a laugh and laugh tracks are needed to prompt audiences when to chuckle. This limited series is enjoyable and puts one in the mind of other family shows, like the Cosbys, Soul Food and Girlfriends. Purchase the series on line, gather your friends or family members and enjoy the show!
the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” Ephesians $: 15-18. The key to recognizing the difference between God’s Word and Satan’s; one uplifts you while the other seeks to destroy you. May God bless and keep you always.

Ask Alma! Not Enough Home Cooking
inside a bathroom that made our hair stand on end.) We all agreed that our wives would never do something so…so…so…so damned sexy and daring. Tell me, Alma. Why do wives avoid sex with their husbands (when the girlfriends can’t seem to get enough)? And don’t give me that lame excuse about wives having to work on their jobs then come home to do housework and homework. Most of my friends share equally in housekeeping and child-rearing duties. Simply put, if a wife won’t “cook” for her man at home, shouldn’t she expect him to occasionally eat out? Signed, A Real Bro
Dear Alma, Dear A Real Bro, Over my long Thanksgiving weekend, everywhere I went I encountered my married brothas complaining about the same thing – wives not wanting or initiating sex. It was as much a constant as football and turkey. These are good men, Alma. They want to do the right thing. But some feel trapped. They can be faithful and celibate or they can creep. And yes, some have already strayed. (One married friend told of an encounter he had with his girlfriend
You’re kidding, right? Aaaahhh, no. You are not allowed to switch to fast food after you’ve committed to a fine dining establishment. Since this is the holiday season, I think it’s high time I address this issue and let you guys in on a “cooking” secret. Hear me when I say this: A thoroughly basted turkey turns out moist and tender every time.
DECEMBER 6, 2013
Are you feeling me? Let me break it down. In the beginning, you really don’t have to do much to get the gravy going. But once you’ve had your favorite holiday dish year after year, we all know what to expect. You need to spice that sucker up just a little every now and again. Add a little more hot sauce here and a little less mustard there. It just depends on the occasion. Give the turkey in your kitchen all the attention it deserves. You don’t need to take that extra effort outside your home, ‘cause either way you’re putting out effort. Why not display all your extra trimmings where it feeds and nurtures your commitment? Reach into the cabinet and take out everything you got. While you’re waiting for the oven to get hot, delicately rub and pat down your turkey. Please tell me you pulled it out of the freezer this morning and you’ve given it appropriate time and assistance to thaw. Add all the ingredients necessary. Don’t be shy; good cooks make sure they get all up in those nooks and crannies. That’s the old-skool way; you’ve got to put your foot in it. LOL. Once you’ve seasoned that bad boy to the best of your ability, trust me, it’s ready to roast. (And the specials of the week will make you blush!) Alma

Leadership Conference and the organizer of the .first boycotts against segregated buses died Nov. 15 in Baton Rouge, La. He was 95. Jemison is remembered for organizing the boycott of Baton Rouge, La. public buses in the summer of 1953 in response to a strike by bus drivers against that city’s abolishment of a rule forbidding Blacks to sit in the first 10 rows of a bus. According to The New York Times, that boycott informed a similar action the next year in Montgomery, Ala. organized by a young Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King.

Senator West is excited to continue his work as an effective and tenured member of the Legislature. “It does not seem that I am near completing my 20th year of service on behalf of the constituents of Dallas County and the citizens of Texas,” said Senator West. “But I remain as committed to doing the job down in Austin as I was when I first set foot on the floor of the Texas Senate. “I remain excited because despite the hundreds of pieces of legislation that I’ve helped place into law, there yet remains serious work to be done,” Senator West said. “I cannot rest knowing that some Texas school children do not have all the resources they will PAGE 24

Leftovers with Wooten
SPORTS w/ Roger B. Brown
With the Thanksgiving holidays now behind us, it was a good time to catch up on some sports leftovers with one of my favorite people _ Hall of Famer John Wooten. And, as is normally the case, a simple ‘What’s happening John,’ turned into a full-fledged three-plus hours of conversation on a variety of wide-ranging topics with Wooten, who is Chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance group. So, here goes… On the Jerry Jones (owner of the Dallas Cowboys) endorsement of guaranteeing the return of coach Jason Garrett next season… “I think Jerry was trying to do what Clint Murchison (the Cowboys first owner) did for Tom (Landr y, The Cowboys’ first coach) back in the day,’’ Wooten said. “Everybody thought Tom was going to get fired (after four consecutive losing seasons), but he received a 10-year (contract) extension. And the rest is history. “Had Jerry not dealt with that then, it would have killed Jason for the rest of this season. But if this team doesn’t make the playoffs, I still think he could be gone. If they make the playoffs, then Jerry wins the bet. They have no excuse not to make the playoffs this year, especially with the state of the rest of the NFC east.’’ With eight new coaches and five general managers hired after last season, one wouldn’t think there would be a whole of changes this offseason. But, Wooten begs to differ. “I don’t know if there will be as many as last year, but it could be close,’’ he said. “I think there may be four or five new coaches and maybe one or two new general managers.’’ Leslie Frazier of the Minnesota Vikings (one of three black coaches, along with Mike Tomlin of Pittsburgh PAGE 25
!
and Marvin Lewis of Cincinnati) could be in trouble, according to Wooten. With the Vikings moving into a new stadium next season, and likely taking a franchise quarterback with their first pick in next year’s draft, it might be a good time to start over, especially with former coach Brad Childress also coming off the books. Tennessee, Miami, Houston, Tampa Bay, Detroit, Washington, Oakland and the New York Giants are the other teams that could be in line for new coaches. “Tampa Bay could be saving Greg Schiano’s job with a recent three-game win streak,’’ Wooten said. “Tennessee and Detroit have to make the playoffs for the coaches to stick around. “Gary Kubiak may be saved by the stroke he had a month ago because you don’t want to come across as being heartless. Still, Houston and Atlanta are the two most disappointing teams this season. But Mike Smith (Atlanta) should be fine after what he has done to turn that program around since his arrival. Miami could be a possibility because of all of the internal mess that is going on in the locker room. Washington will come down to RGIII (Robert Griffin III, Washington quarterback) and what he wants to do. It’s a touch and go situation. Although it only has been two years for Dennis Allen at Oakland, this still could be the end because of a lack of direction in his program. And, it just might be time for a change in New York with (Tom) Coughlin.” Black coaches at the top of most wish lists are Lovie Smith (former Chica go Bears head coach); Ray Ho r t o n ( t h e C l e v e l a n d B r o w n s defensive coordinator); Jim Caldwell (Baltimore Ra vens offensive coordinator); David Shaw (Stanford) and Kevin Sumlin (Texas A&M). As far as GM candidates go, Mark Ross (New York Giants), Jimmy Raye, J r. ( In d i a n a p o l i s ) . R a y Fa r m e r (Cleveland) and Omar Khan (Pittsburgh) are the leading black candidates. On the Miami Dolphins internal mess with offensive linemen Jo n a t ha n Ma r t i n a n d R i c h i e Incognito…
over. That’s what happened down there. “All of that stuff about allowing a person from another race to use the N-word in the presence of other black players because he has been recognized as some kind of honorary brother is a bunch of crap. That in itself tells you there is something wrong in that locker room.’’ O n t h e m o v i e : “ 1 2 Ye a r s A Slave’’… “Of all of the slave movies that I’ve seen, none of them have come like this movie, Wooten said. “It’s strong. And it doesn’t let up. It just keeps coming at you. I think all of the young players in professional sports should go and see it because maybe then, they wouldn’t be so easy to flaunt around the N-word so casually. That’s the most despicable and degrading word in history.’’ Wooten said that took him back to his playing days in the 1960s with the Cleveland Browns. And he said, the JFK (President John F. Kennedy) commemoration last month brought back some sad memories. The Browns played host to the Cowboys that w e e ke n d ; t w o d a y s a f t e r t h e assassination of Kennedy in Dallas. “There was no way Dallas was going to beat us because we knew what this city stood for’’ Wooten said. “Roger Staubach, the great Navy
quarterback at the time who was on the way to winning the Heisman trophy that year, was supposed to be on the cover of Life magazine that week. In the top of the left-hand corner, there was a question that a s ke d : “A r e Ne g r o e s D e m a n d s Realistic? But (the Staubach cover) was displaced by a picture of President Kennedy. “Whenever we played in Dallas, we always had to stay at the Ramada Inn near Love Field airport because other hotels in the city wouldn’t let the black and white players stay together,’’ Wooten said. “And we couldn’t go to the movies unless we (black players) sat in the crow’s nest. So Coach Paul Brown said none of us would go. “We always played in Dallas during the week of the fair. One time, I asked the bus driver of our team on the way to the game, why would we see black fans at the game, but not at the fair. And he said that was because blacks only could go to the fair one day. So, beating Dallas was a must.’’

In our library On Mike Tyson and the War on Terror By Connie Atkinson
Last night I walked into the family room of my sister’s home. The family was watching HBO’s special of the film Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth, an autobiographical one-man stage show filmed by Spike Lee. I sat down to watch. I have always thought Mike Tyson a curious and somewhat alien personality and I have never been interested in understanding much more about him outside of the occasional television interview that grills him about his brush-ups with the law. After all, what does an expat American writer, working a citrus orchard in New Zealand with her Kiwi husband, care much about a black American who became famous for knocking people out, spent time in jail for rape that he claims never happened, and who has been struggling to resurrect some kind of career ever since? Nonetheless, I sat down, curious to see what Mike Tyson could come up with to do on stage besides box. What I got was a curious surprise. Mike Tyson can tell a story and his story is very good. It is filled with hard-knocks, adversity, bad behavior, tragedy and sorrow, love, hard work and triumph. By the sheer effort he makes onstage, one can tell exactly why Mike Tyson achieved the highest heights during his boxing career. Yes, he has natural boxing talent and, it seem, he was lucky enough to be discovered and mentored by a tough and irascible Italian trainer, Cus D’Amato, who didn’t pull any punches with Mike. Despite the breaks, there is still that indescribable something that people who make it big have that Mike Tyson amply displayed PAGE 29
during this ninety minute show. I was certain as I watched that I was seeing exactly the same hard work, discipline, passion, and drive that had brought him heavyweight championship titles. There it is, I thought, that same tenacity; that “keep going, you can do this, no matter the odds that say you can’t.” And what are the odds that someone like Mike Tyson could pull off a one-man show? Yet, he did, and I found it compelling. When the show was about half-way through, I realized I was gaining much more than I imagined I would. I was gaining some insight into this person that I could not have guessed or read about in a newspaper or even seen in an interview. ‘His stories, the manner of his speech, his gestures, facial expressions, and antics made him grow on screen to a more multidimensional man than I ever imagined was there. He became more of a real, live person than the fierce fighting-machinewarrior of the ring or the exconvict protesting he didn’t do it. Yeah, I know it’s a show. I know it is supposed to evoke some degree of sympathy. I know a show is not the complete, unvarnished truth. Yet, I saw so many of those things that make us all human, that make us all the same and, more than that, I got to see a little of what made the man and that, for me, changes everything. Before, I thought of him as a one-track man fueled with an overabundance of testosterone and a generous dose of that macho stuff from the 'hood that I have never understood. But now I also know that his complete ‘foreignness’ to me is illusion. Yeah, maybe I don’t know exactly how he thinks, and why; maybe his background is so different from mine that it would be hard for us to actually be friends, even impossible. Perhaps the way he thinks would really rile me but now I know one thing:
Mike Tyson will never seem quite so foreign, sinister, or frightening to me again. I can respect the man even if we don’t see eye-to-eye. That is what education is supposed to do for us, and this show educated me. It validated the risk I took when writing about the mind of a terrorist and the rationale behind his very evil plans, while also exploring whether or not knowing what he thinks, and why, changes anything. I have never been able to escape the feeling that understanding who someone is, where they come from, and what they have come to believe and care about, and then coming to the conclusion that they are not so very different from ourselves, might be the surest way to peace. Maybe when we know, we can trust. Maybe when we trust, we can be hurt but not trusting also gets us hurt, doesn’t it? I can’t help but suspect that the way we have been fighting the War on Terror, though perfectly understandable under
DECEMBER 6, 2013
the circumstances, mostly results in producing more terrorists. It is hurting us as much as them. We have not found a way of killing the message of the jihadists and rendering it impotent to attracting masses of new recruits. Don’t we need to wage peace at the same time we are defending ourselves? Isn’t knowing and understanding our “enemies” a place to start? Foreigners I meet during my travels, from around the world, especially the young, have often asked me, “Why don’t Americans care about us? We know everything about your culture, why don’t Americans know anything about ours?” The real question, for Americans, might be, not whether there are more of them dead than us, but what, in the end, has the best chance of taking us to the place where there is no more need to kill at all. ###
Connie Atkinson is the co-author with her brother, Thomas DiCarlo, of The Brotherhood of Purity, a novel exploring the mind of a terrorist and whether mankind can build a world at peace. You can find it online at www.Amazon.com and www.BarnesandNoble.com.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
