Message to the People... It’s so hard to say goodbye... As 2013 comes to a close, I must reflect on some of the people, just a few of many, whose lives impacted mine, whether they knew it or not.
KWANZAA December 26 January 1
It was such a joy to go and visit Thelma Youngblood and watch her as she Cheryl Smith lovingly took care of her ailing mother. Just observing Thelma struck a nerve with me because she was such a good caregiver, taking care of her mom’s every need. Talk about unselfishness. Thelma tirelessly gave of herself to ensure that her mother’s last days on this earth were comfortable and peaceful. I saw Thelma’s strength and I hoped that if ever I was needed, that I would be able to be as loving. Ironically, I was at their home when Mrs. Lucy Allison transitioned and I found myself still on the receiving end of teachable moments. Although my Aunt Carolyn was 97, I still thought she would live forever. I couldn’t imagine going to Plant City, Florida and not seeing her face, hearing her voice and receiving her love. The wife of my mother’s oldest brother, Aunt Carolyn was one of my favorites, since I was a child. She was always concerned about my well-being and she wanted me to know that I always had a home with her.
Spiritually SPEAKING 9
When I traveled to her funeral in May, I didn’t know I would be returning a month later for the funeral of my cousin, Nathaniel Walker. Now many of my cousins were actually old enough to be my parents, and Nat was no exception. He and my mother were running buddies from their younger years when his mom and dad, my Aunt Anna and Uncle David, took care of my mother. Nat and my mother remained close and in more recent years, they loved going to casinos. As I grow older, more and more relatives and friends are transitioning. Years ago the esteemed Maya Angelou told me that growing old is not for the weak. I think I understand what she means. It is really hard to say goodbye. I had only recently become acquainted with Mrs. Evelyn Lowery and was shocked to hear of her hospitalization and eventual death. Mr. Dick Gregory said her funeral was like none other that he had ever been to. I knew it had to be special because she was such a special lady. Many know her as the wife of the Rev. Joseph Lowery but so many others know her for her civil and human rights works.

I’ve known the Kirks for over two decades. I love to see generational activity in the struggle and that is just what I saw with the Kirks. This year, Ambassador Kirk said farewell to his mother, Willie Mae Kirk. A force to be reckoned with, Mrs. Kirk was an educator and an activist with a distinguished career of service. Brian Dasher and Kathy Mobley were two of my high school classmates. At the time, 450 in a graduating class seemed pretty big and while I didn’t know everyone in the class I knew these two. Both were good-looking, smart and popular. I think that in our years since graduating, these two deaths really made me sit up and think. Dean James Hawkins started out in my life as a professor at Florida A&M University over 35 years ago. Our relationship transformed and grew over the years as he went from Mr., to Dr. To Dean Hawkins The last time, I saw him, as we sat in his office pondering my journalistic future and his impending retirement, I saw him as my friend. Fritzi Pikes was the type of sister everyone wanted to call their friend because she was a true friend. A dynamic businesswoman, family person and spiritually grounded woman, Fritzi was full of life and it was a shock learning of her abrupt death. I remember a “friend Lawrence Young, telling me about her. As he praised her, he told me that I had to meet her. She was everything Lawrence said, and more. This year also marked the 10th year since the death of good friend John Woods. I don’t know that he loved anything more than Southern University, except for life and he lived it to the fullest. We are here for such a short time. President Nelson Mandela showed the world what love can do. Enough said.
Cheryl A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination. Nelson Mandela !

May the holidays bring you joy and peace By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
During this time of joy and giving, I want to wish each of you and your families the best of the holiday season. It is my fervent prayer that abundant grace and joy will fill your hearts and your homes. This is the season that families gather together to talk, and reflect on the things that are important in life such as giving, sharing and loving one another. It is also the time that we await the coming of the New Year. Christmas reminds us that there is goodness inside of all people. And while we live in a world that often appears harsh and indierent, we must remember that goodness, and try as best we
can to make our communities and our nation a better place for all people. There are a number of things that each of us can do to improve the conditions in which we live. We can visit

These are just some of the things that I wish that each of us would do during the holiday season, and
throughout the New Year. If we do, we will become better people and others will follow our example. Our nation will be a better for our eorts. As the person you have entrusted to represent you in Congress, I promise that I will continue to be a hard working public servant who protects and promotes your best interests with vision and integrity. Please know that you are in my prayers during this season and each day of the year. I ask that you keep me and my family in your prayers as well. May you experience a blessed Christmas and New Year. Judge me, Judge me Not By James A. Washington
The bible is a reminder that being judgmental is really akin to slapping yourself in the face. “Do not judge or you too will be judged. For in the same manner you judge others, you will be judged and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Matthew 7:1-2. It seems that’s a simple enough standard to live by, but the power of this statement, when viewed from the perspective of who’s saying it, the importance skyrockets. For the most part people just cannot help themselves when it comes to judging others. The very nature of man down through the ages is to judge. This human condition causes all of us great problems and inflicts great harm. It worried Paul so much he talked about it like this: “For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.” 2 Corinthians 12:20. It’s this gossip and feeling superior that I think Christ is referring to in Matthew. These are two traits of the human personality that come from the need to judge and they entice so many of us into situations likely to destroy what should be our eternal peace. We live in a world where one is judged by l o o k s , b a c k g r o u n d , m o n e y, e d u c a t i o n a l achievement and individual power and influence. As Christians we should aspire to an eternity void of all this. The common denominator in heaven is a fundamental belief in Jesus, who taught to judge not lest you be judged.
SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING By James A. Washington James Washington is the publisher of the Dallas Weekly and General Manager of the Atlanta Voice
The struggle, our struggle is to actually walk in the shoes of another human being, to consider his or her circumstances, to recognize the cruelties of life and be our brother’s keeper.
So the next time you’re at the point of raising your nose, take a moment and look up. That would probably be an excellent time to remember to acknowledge God for his grace in forgiving you, your unkind thoughts. The alternative I’m told is to have God look down His nose at you; a chilling thought I might add. When all is said and done, it’s pretty easy to understand that if God can forgive, then who are we to be better than God? Easy to understand, sometimes impossible to do. However, this is clear. It’s not confusing. There are no perfect people, pastors, churches, children, spouses, fathers or mothers.
You might want to make an effort towards an attitude adjustment. We are all dirty rags needing a good spiritual bath. As God has done for me on many an occasion, I need to consider doing it to and for others. Life requires a “little help here” for everybody. My point is that when we encounter the opportunity to pass judgment, the temptation to look down our noses at someone, judge a person to have no redeeming qualities and is just an awful human being, remember this. “For if you forgive them when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your father will not forgive your sins. Matthew 6:14-15. We all need to work on this because our very souls are at stake. So the next time you’re at the point of raising your nose, take a moment and look up. That would probably be an excellent time to remember to acknowledge God for his grace in forgiving you, your unkind thoughts. The alternative I’m told is to have God look down His nose at you; a chilling thought I might add. You see you cannot judge and forgive and at the same time. Only God can do that and it’s in His nature not to. Jesus took care of that for Him. May God less and keep you always.

Ask Alma! Forgiving my Cheating Husband Dear Alma, My husband and I have been married for eight years. He was my first love, and I love him dearly. We have four children, ranging in age from 10 years to 8 months. I am dedicated to my husband and our children. While I was pregnant with our last child, he had an affair and fathered a child with that woman. He and I have worked through our problems and are determined to make our marriage work. We have opened our home and will raise the other child with our children. My sisters and my girlfriend say I’m crazy and that I should not forgive him. Every time we are together, they make me feel stupid and say things that hurt my feelings. I don’t want to stop seeing them, but how can I get them to leave it alone and stop making me feel bad? Signed, iforgivehim Hello Iforgivehim,
Infidelity is extremely heartbreaking, and to have it happen while you’re pregnant rates as a super-sized undeserving blow. But that’s not the question you asked. As for regaining the respect of your sisters and girlfriend, that might be harder than the
reconciliation between you and your husband. A best friend and/ or sister-girl can be a tough nut to crack. You know how we are – wobble-neck and all, LOL. Truth be reminded, though, they are coming from a place of love, concern and protection. I’m sure it was hard for them to witness your fears and tears of heartache and pain. Now that you and your husband have retied the ties that bind, you want them to be forgiving of him as well. Come on; you know that’s not how this ball is dunked. It’s much easier for a spouse to forgive, forget and move on than it is for an extended family member. Continue to remain strong in your faith and decision to hold on to your husband and the unity of family. As long as you’re both at peace with your decision, it doesn’t matter what others think or say, including me. Only you and your husband know the details of what goes on in your prayer closet. If your best life includes standing by your man, stand tall, chest out, feet firmly planted. Explain to your sisters and girlfriends how much their support means to you. Ask them to respect your decision to stay, just as they would have respected your decision to leave. Remind them to refrain from using words that are damaging and hurtful. When the conversation leads to negative comments, defend yourself and especially your husband with a positive response. Redefine how you allow others to speak about your family. It will take a while for them to come around, so be patient. Keep your head up! You are an excellent reflection and supreme example of the ability to forgive.

The Gospel According to “Mr. B” By T. D. English I Messenger
It’s not likely that John Beckwith Sr. knew exactly what was before him when he boarded that bus from Ferriday, Louisiana in the mid 1960s. He wasn’t coming to Dallas with the intent of starting what would later be the number one funeral home in the National Funeral Director and Morticians Association. He was leaving Louisiana because the Ku Klux Klan had told him he’d better. After witnessing others in his civil rights organization murdered and even set on fire, Beckwith took heed to the late night phone call that suggested that he was next. At that point, Mr. Beckwith’s dreams of relocating to Dallas were more about survival than success. Whether he planned for it or not, the next 50 years would prove to set the stage for a funeral home business and his son, John Beckwith Jr. would do more than ride shotgun with Dad, he’d learn early on to take the reins and run with. Most people in the southern sector of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas are well acquainted with John Beckwith Jr. After all, if he hasn’t served one of them a warrant in his capacity as deputy constable, he may have stood before them to deliver a sermon as an ordained minister. In most cases however, Beckwith is known for his tenderness and strength in a most difficult time. That sad moment of making the final plans for a loved one. As Beckwith Jr., (Mr. B.) put it, being there to serve people is not just a job that he happens to be very good at, it’s his ministry. And everything that he has, does and is he attributes to that calling. “I learned the business early,” said Mr. B. “My very first job in the funeral home was as Funeral Director in Charge. Dad allowed me the opportunity of on-the-job training and when I messed up, he cleaned it up and we just kept going.” And go they did. From the opening of the original funeral home in Waxahachie in 1980 to the new and improved Dallas location five years later, Golden Gate Funeral Homes saw an increase of PAGE 10
!
150 cases a year. By 1988 the funeral home had gone from 200 to 800 annual funerals and a coveted position in the community. So when the largest funeral home corporation in America began to approach and purchase mom and pop funeral homes in the Metroplex in 1988 and again in 1998, Golden Gate Funeral Home was primed and positioned to completely ignore the extremely generous offers of a buyout. “We were and still are familyowned and operated,” stressed Mr. B. “We had an obligation to our employees, our community and our families to continue to be a staple in the community. You can’t put a dollar amount on commitment and if we’re nothing else we are committed.” Although selling wasn’t an option, competing had to be. For the next 15 years, Mr. B stood on
his TLC reality show ‘Best Funeral Ever’, Mr. B is catapulting the industry well past the traditional boundaries that had been the norm. “The TV show (Best Funeral Ever) has allowed us to introduce something new to the general public” said Mr. B. “It was time for people to see past all the limitations that were associated with the funeral business and start realizing that just as no two people are the same, no two funerals should be the same.” When “Best Funeral Ever” originally aired in the latter part of 2012, the public wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. Facebook, Twitter and the mainstream media were all a buzz with statements of distaste and disillusions. People couldn’t understand what it meant and why it had to be on TV. Even some members of the African American community
the forefront of the funeral business and applied everything he’d learned to every opportunity that presented itself. It’s difficult to imagine that the Mr. B of today was ever the young up-and-coming funeral director known as John Jr. Now, nearly three decades later, as he sits in the front office of the 20,000 square foot funeral home and crematory, the CEO of funeral homes serving Texas and Louisiana is regarded as the funeral home business marketing guru. Beginning with his 2005 commercial that received more than three million YouTube hits to
suggested that this show could singlehandedly set back the race a couple 100 years. Mr. B countered that “‘Best Funeral Ever’ was always meant to be a vehicle for education and advertisement and it really hurt when people didn’t see that. “I never had any expectations for America but I was disappointed at the statements that were made by people that we do business with and our community.” Regardless of the naysayers, Mr. B and TLC continued their collaboration for 16 more episodes of ‘Best Funeral Ever’ that began airing in early December, Monday nights at 9pm !
There are features of a funeral for a man who loved breakfast, a celestial marriage and an Olympic service, to name a few. According to Mr. B, nothing about the show has changed and they’re “still giving families what they asked for.” Recent reviews show that this time the general public seems to regard the show as a lot less upsetting and a little more entertaining. “We started people to talking about funeral services again, which will get us back down to the 5% cremations that we had 30 years ago and away from the 30 % that we’re seeing today. And if we can get people talking and laughing, then I think we’ve accomplished something,” said Mr. B. Golden Gate Funeral Home has evolved from its mere 800 yearly cases to upward of 2500. They host a weekly radio show and local television show both under the moniker of “Ask the Undertaker.” John Beckwith Sr. is now semiretired and extremely proud of the innovation and accomplishments of his son. He now regards that threat on his life all those years ago as the defining moment in his life. The funeral home is known for its Stepping with Attitude Team (SWAT) of dancing pall bearers and have even given classes for professional mourners. In addition to Golden Gate providing services for babies 0 -12 years at no charge, they work with hospice companies and AIDS organizations to provide services for the indigent. Although the business has grown by leaps and bounds and most of the members of the Dallas staff are regarded as official reality TV stars, Mr. B says not one of those things is the scriptural premise by which his funeral home is operated. “Everything that I do is just representative of what I believe. I believe that funerals should be a special, individual celebration. I believe that we can change people’s ideas about final wishes. I believe completely in the services that we provide and I believe that the people we provide services for are very pleased. At the end of the day with everything that we do, all we want to hear is our Heavenly Father and our families say ‘Well done.’” !

Healing through Cultural Fashion and Beauty This is a time of awakening for AfricanAmerican selfpreservation and beautification. And a natural hair care guru is leading by example... Isis Brantley of Dallas, Texas is a style influencer and the recent recipient of the "Nzuri 100 Carat Diamond Award" for pioneering natural hair care; and being a trailblazer for over 20 years in the natural hair care industry. Isis was recently awarded during the Nzuri Natural Hair, Health & Beauty Festival's 100 Carat Diamond Award Gala event. Isis Brantley has been a practitioner of natural hair care in the African-American community for 30 years. She is also the brainchild of the annual Naturally Isis Hair Parade and Festival with celebrity songstress Erykah Badu as the Grand Marshall. According to Isis, braiding natural hair has been a career endeavor that has been challenged by ideologies that insist on denouncing cultural expression, economic liberty and civil rights. Isis's most dramatic encounter was a highly publicized airport security alert when her afro set off a panic response by TSA officials in Atlanta, Georgia who were concerned that Isis was concealing a weapon in her hair. The incident was an embarrassing spectacle for Isis and made national news headlines. Currently Isis has been challenged by the state of Texas for illegally operating her Institute of Ancestral Braiding College without PAGE 11

becoming a licensed barber instructor. Isis has opened a federal suite against the state of Texas challenging the economic liberty and due process of the law in order to continue to operate her school. Isis seeks certification that will be recognized by the state and allow her students to be able to operate legally as braiding professionals. "This is a natural hair care and braiding business. We don't barber, heat hair or use harmful chemicals; and there exist no licensed school that trains and certifies for braiding natural hair. This is a practice that is apart of indigenous
the market cause damage to their hair." says Isis. As a natural hair care guru, Isis keeps her focus on the nexus of cultural beauty and ethnic style by wearing elaborate ethnic fashions. At the December 6th Nzuri Diamond Awards event, Isis Brantley wore a TeKay Designs gown with bronze, gold embroidery that was hand made in Ghana, Africa. The gown has a mermaid silhouette with a sexy opening on the dress skirt with embroidered scalloped edges. The fabric is cotton jacquard, a high quality embossed cotton fabric. The gown has a modern fit and the
African culture, and I'm offended by ignorant outsiders attempting to regulate a cultural practice that is a civil right, a human right, a God given right!" explains Isis. "What I do is important to people of the African diaspora because we offer healing through the hair and the expression of culture. AfricanAmericans need to be re-educated about the beauty standards for black hair care. Many of the popular products and practices in
embroidered African fabric makes a significant cultural statement. Isis's fight for preserving cultural identity for people of the African diaspora is represented from head to toe. Isis uses ethnic fashions and beauty to heal the community by promoting cultural style. According to Isis, self-expression through cultural fashions is a part of a healing process. She explains,"There is healing through cultural expression. This is a !
culturally related industry, so ethnic fashions complements my identity. This is how I represent! My wardrobe is styled by Tekay Designs because I love the bold colors, soft fabrics and Afrique Chic styles. For me it's important to support other creatives from the African diaspora. Africans are trendsetters and influencers of style. Other ethnic groups have fashioned products to the AfricanAmerican consumer's demand; we need to also patron black owned businesses that offer African cultural products. Patronizing is apart of the healing process for the black community. This is a time of awakening for African-American self-preservation and beautification. And I'm leading by example. By changing suppressive policies and social conformity, while promoting cultural awareness and wellness through my profession." According to a popular belief of those who practice cosmetology formally and informally, the mindset is that, hair relaxers can be both a blessing and a curse for many AfricanAmerican women. However, when not applied professionally, the harsh chemicals can result in hair loss, breakage and even scalp burns. Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. In having the conversation about building within South Dallas, many issues arise with respect to GWENDOLYNand JONES education business in Ask The Advocate See ROAD, page 19
PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “noâ€? and voting “yesâ€? mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa. Bamboosa, a well-known U.S. manufacturer of unique eco-friendly products, has acquired the exclusive rights to manufacture and distribute a new product designed to make the everyday use of iPads® and similar devices a more comfortable experience. The Lap Log© tablet holder is already in production at Bamboosa’s Andrews, S.C facility and will be distributed worldwide. The Lap Log is one of the most universal tablet holders on the market. The cylindrical shape of the stand differentiates it from similar products in that it allows the user to adjust the angle of the iPad, tablet or eReader for better viewing without changing their body position. The wooden insert accommodates most tablet and eReader devices and works equally as well in either portrait or landscape mode. Furthermore, the “bean bag” design is made from all natural buckwheat hulls and provides for a stable platform on almost any surface. Most importantly- it’s made in America! “Almost 200 million tablets and eReader devices have been sold worldwide,” said Mindy Saintsing, VP of Marketing at Bamboosa. “Now consumers are looking for a more comfortable way to use them without holding them or propping them on their laps or knees. We think this product delivers on that promise better than any other we have seen. Plus, it’s eco-friendly and made in America!” The Lap Log is made of sustainable materials, including certified organic 100% cotton twill and naturally grown buckwheat hulls. A removable wooden insert that holds the tablet is crafted locally and is hand-sanded and stained with a natural, non-toxic finish. Washable – If you happen to get a little dirt on your Lap Log when you're at the park, simply remove the wooden insert, dump the natural buckwheat filling into a container, and put your Lap Log into the wash. Flexible – The durable bean bag design lets you view any tablet or eReader at almost limitless viewing angles, and the buckwheat hulls allow your Lap Log to conform to any surface. Versatile – Use your Lap Log in bed, on the couch, sitting at your desk or on the kitchen counter. No straps, Velcro, or clips, and it easily adjusts to eliminate glare. Remove the wooden insert, and your Lap Log can be used as a comfy travel pillow! Travel Ready – The Lap Log weighs a little more than a pound, so you’ll be able to take yours anywhere. It's light enough to throw in your carry-on, and has the added bonus of doubling as a neck pillow! Going outdoors? Toss it in your backpack and have a convenient and stable stand for your device at the beach or on the trail. www.thelaplog.com
