Most importantly- it’s made in America! “Almost 200 million tablets and eReader devices have been sold worldwide, said Mindy Saintsing, VP of Marketing at Bamboosa. “Now consumers are looking for a more comfortable way to use them without holding them or propping them on their laps or knees. We think this product delivers on that promise better than any other we have seen. Plus, it’s eco-friendly and made in America! The Lap Log is made of sustainable materials, including certified organic 100% cotton twill and naturally grown buckwheat hulls. Washable – If you happen to get a little dirt on your Lap Log when you're at the park, simply remove the wooden insert, dump the natural buckwheat filling into a container, and put your Lap Log into the wash. Flexible – The durable bean bag design lets you view any tablet or eReader at almost limitless viewing angles, and the buckwheat hulls allow your Lap Log to conform to any surface. Message to the People... Learning how to communicate effectively is important! Too often people will think that they are communicating, that they are voicing their opinions and thoughts; when actually they aren’t. During an interview last week, with attendees to the Safe Conversations Workshop held recently, it was clear that they benefited significantly from the experience. Cheryl Smith I was surprised to hear their feedback because after talking to Drs. Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt, I had a feeling that it would be a great workshop to attend. It was interesting to hear how men responded to the exercises and I thought about how great it would be to have like programs in schools, churches and community centers so that folks could embrace the notion that we need to work together. The program is free and they provide free childcare. So some of the excuses have been taken care of. Sure you might have to work, and I know they say the workshop is for couples but you can go solo, or invite a friend or coworker. I guarantee that you’ll be glad you did!

Shareholder, IWARREN, P.C I am frequently asked by prospective clients how to prepare a will. As a rule, I am not a fan of the homemade holographic will because generally the wills cause more problems than they solve. e problem is most people lack the legal training to dra language within the will. Wills prepared without the advice of legal counsel can lead to four common pitfalls for family members. A holographic will is defined as a will “written wholly in the handwriting of the testator” and although not stated in the Estates Code, signed by the testator. Take for example the following hypothetical one page holographic will. Ms. Oliver, our testator, wrote her last will and testament and in her will she le: her bank accounts to her daughter, her house to her grandchildren, her car to her son, and she named her sister as her executor. For the sake of simplicity, let’s also presume that her testamentary intent is clear and this document is her last will and testament. First pitfall, the will is not self-proving. is is really more a minor problem than a major pitfall. All the lawyer has to do is bring two witnesses to court that will swear that they are familiar with Ms. Oliver’s handwriting and the will presented was written by Ms. Oliver. at’s not a big deal, but what about the second pitfall? Second pitfall, Ms. Oliver owns more than a bank account, a car and a house. She also owns several rent houses and stock certificates found in her home. What happens with the other assets? at’s a problem. Because Ms. Oliver did not have a residuary clause and because her homemade will does not dispense with all of assets, a second court proceeding, other than probating the will, is needed to determine her heirs. ird pitfall, although Ms. Oliver’s designated an executor, she did not create an independent administration. All is not lost, e Estate Code provides for a mechanism to create an independent administration. But the law requires that all the parties agree on the executor designated. In our case, Ms. Oliver’s sister. But wait, will all the parties agree? Ms. Oliver’s daughter and son are in favor of it, but what about the grandchildren? You may recall our testator le her house to her grandchildren. Pitfall number four: e grandchildren are all minors, and under the Estates Code they are incapacitated. e judge may permit the custodial parent or the guardian of the person to agree on behalf of the minor children. But, if there is not a guardian of the person and someone questions the custodial parent’s judgment or motivation, the Court may appoint a Guardian ad Litem to protect the interest of the minor distributees, which is an additional expense of the estate. At this point, you are probably wondering, “is there another way?” Yes, hire a lawyer. Atty. Ingrid Warren earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence from e University of Texas School of Law where she learned it is as important to understand the policy reason for the law as it is to know the law.

A Texas Civil Rights Legend that Fought for Us By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
The late Hispanic civil rights lawyer Adelfa Callejo was a relentless opponent of prejudice and small mindedness. Her life was Hon. Eddie Bernice devoted to Johnson improving social conditions for minorities, particularly Hispanic Americans. Ms. Callejo was an outspoken advocate for minority education; an entire generation of young people has been inspired to pursue higher education because of her urging, some even decided to emulate her academic path and chose to become lawyers. Born into an acutely segregated community in South Texas, she witnessed biased social norms, including one that required Hispanics to drink from horse troughs rather than separate water fountains that were designated for white and black citizens.
SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING By James A. Washington
Men, particularly Black men, survive in this natural world, lots of time on instinct, ego, stamina and an unwillingness to submit their wills to that of another man. Almost from birth, we are told we don’t have to take “that” off anyone. It can be difficult to reconcile the dilemma of faith and submission and that of sacrifice and accepting someone else’s will superseding our own. Life teaches us to be and act independently. Stand up for yourself and it’s better to be a leader than to be a follower. Then, as Christians, here comes the bible and it tells us in Hebrews 11:1-3 that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. So,
She learned her sense of activism while a small girl. At the age of nine she stood at her father’s side, performing the role of translator, as he protested the treatment of Hispanic children in the public school system. When he was not agitating, Callejo’s father picked cotton and labored as a mine worker. Her mother washed and ironed clothing for other families to help make ends me. Mrs. Callejo’s relationship with Dallas began in 1939 when her family, searching for better opportunity, relocated here. Callejo worked in a law office and later received her undergraduate and law degrees from Southern Methodist University, becoming the first Hispanic woman to graduate from the Dallas based institution. Willingly embracing a life of activism, Callejo worked with others in the Dallas civil rights community to
create single-member city council districts. That led to racial minorities having a greater opportunity of being elected to the public office. In 1973 when a 12-year-old Hispanic youth was killed while sitting in a Dallas police car, Callejo helped to lead protests demanding justice in the case, and the arrest of the police officer that was accused of shooting the unharmed youth. Over the years she continued to fight for bilingual education in Dallas public schools, and spoke out against restrictive immigration policies and practices. She filed a lawsuit against immigration policies which she said were destroying Hispanic families, separating children from their parents. Even when she fell into falling health, she continued to battle against injustice and urged young people to pursue education, which she described as a pathway to the middle class. Now that her voice is silent, Dallas will miss her
greatly. Yet, we were abundantly blessed during the many years that she lived and worked amongst us.
we are to submit to the will of God, follow the teachings and the example of the life of Jesus Christ, and be guided by listening to the Holy Spirit; fly blindly into the fray, so to speak. Faith will be your lighthouse. Ultimately, we all know faith guided all of the prophets including Moses. Faith brought down the walls of Jericho. By faith the Red Sea was parted. Enoch was transformed by faith. Abraham was delivered by it. But the reality of faith can be foreign to those who rely on what they can see, touch and confirm by their senses. To do otherwise, goes against everything natural and learned in this life. If that sentiment were to prevail, then we all should pack our bags and go straight to hell because the devil has indeed By Marc won.Morial I just have to believe there is more.
it. Friendship and special relationships are sometimes manifested in superhuman deeds on behalf of others. You can’t see it. Respect can change the behavior of the worst wrongdoers. Can’t taste or smell it. We are guided by the unseen everyday in situations where we honor and appreciate those whom we love and are honor bound to protect. Then I submit to you that we must focus on our faith in God as opposed to our faith in men. You can, I can, easily have faith in someone we trust. That manifests itself as loyalty. When we deliberately put God into the mix, then we are face to face with what we truly believe in. You know that you know and He knows that you know. I believe everyone struggles with this as they look for a personal encounter with the Lord. It takes a while to get there, but once there, decisions are simple. Faith based decisions lead to confirmation of who God is and who we are to Him. The promise is that “If you have the faith of a mustard seed…
nothing is impossible to you.” Matthew 17:20.

INTERNSHIPS Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson offers internship opportunities during the fall, spring and summer for undergraduate and graduate students who are currently in their sophomore year or later and who are looking to supplement their academic coursework with an educational working experience. Students will further develop their research and communication skills during their internship and learn firsthand about the interworking of a Congressional District Office. Anyone interested in applying, please e-mail your resume to Luke.Harvey@mail.house.gov. Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. She is the first registered nurse elected to the US Congress.
My point is that the dilemma of faith and submission can keep us from seeking and confronting our faith. I believe it to be another trick of the devil. As long as we do not confront the faith question, we will never find our personal road to salvation. We can actually get in our own way. I am going on record that I have work to do coming to grips with my own faith. But there is no doubt in my mind that I live under the fulfilled promise of grace. Jesus completed His task and a new covenant has been established. The things of this world can sometimes cloud that fact but each and every time my faith is challenged, my faith wins out. I will inherit the promise of grace and the rest of this stuff is irrelevant. It doesn’t mean anything anyway. May God bless and keep you
always.

CURRY: ‘If I Dated Black Girls…’ “I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.” -
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
Last Friday, I gave the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day speech at the University of North Alabama in Florence. I was glowingly introduced by my niece, Rachel Gandy, who is a senior at UNA. I told the audience that having grown up in segregated Tuscaloosa, Ala., how satisfying it was to see “the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners” sit in the same classrooms, if not at the table of brotherhood. I didn’t use those exact words, but they got the point: revolutionary changes have taken place in my home state since the 1960s and the South in general. So many changes, in fact, that public schools in the Deep South are more desegregated than any other region in the nation. During my visit, I met a young White male – who shall remain nameless – who works in the same campus office as my niece, spoke fondly of Rachel, and recounted with glee their study together last summer in Costa Rico.
After my speech, when I was doing my usual Friday afternoon radio segment with Rev. Al Sharpton, I was told that this young man said, “If I dated Black girls – I tell Rachel this all of the time – she would be at the top of the list.” I am sure he meant that as a compliment – it wasn’t. First, it’s presumptuous to think that George E. Curry Rachel, who is smart and beautiful inside and out, would want to date him. Second, for all the talk about racial progress, there are large segments of our society who make decisions based on race and nothing else. Whites do it. Blacks do it. Latinos do it. And so do Asians. After I got over the shock of the young man’s comment – well, I still haven’t gotten over it, as you can see – I thought back to a 2010 Pew Research Center study that found that a record 14.6 percent of all new marriages in the United States in 2008 were between spouses of a different race or ethnicity from one another. That’s more than double the percentage for 1980. Interestingly, rates more than doubled among Whites and nearly tripled among Blacks. But for both
TRUTH TO POWER
Hispanics and Asians, rates were nearly identical in 2008 and 1980. For me, there was another story within the story: “When Whites, Hispanics and Asians decide to marry outside their group, African-Americans rank last in their choice of mates.” It’s easy to dismiss the kooks such as former Louisiana Justice of the Peace Keith Bardwell who resigned under pressure in 2009 after he refused to perform a marriage between a White woman and a Black man. But things are supposed to be different with this so-called “postracial” generation. My niece is an honor student, was in the university’s homecoming court, is charming and beautiful. Yet, the young man at UNA couldn’t see beyond her color: “If I dated Black girls….” Fortunately, Rachel’s love life is not dependent on whether this young man dates “Black girls.” There are plenty of African American and every other kind of men vying for her attention. It’s the idea that this fellow got to know my niece as a person yet found
her unqualified to date solely because of her race is what galls me. While growing up in Alabama, I was told that part of the problem was that Blacks and Whites had not been allowed to interact under Jim Crow, not even in sports. However, when those barriers came down, or so the thinking went, racial prejudice would vanish and people would be judged as individuals, not as part of a supposedly superior or inferior race. In three decades, there will be no majority race in the U.S., according to the Census Bureau. And that means that all racial and ethnic groups will need to learn to step outside their comfort zone to interact as equals with those who don’t look like them. In his “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. King said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Obviously that day has not arrived. Until it does, it’s incumbent upon all of us to make sure that it doesn’t just remain a distant dream. George E. Curry, former editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine, is editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service (NNPA.)

Spoon with your spouse in the bed. 25. Don't pass each other in the house with out reaching out and Recently I read a question from a wife who was annoyed by her husband’s groping her. Whether he was doing it with slaps on the backside or groping her body in other ways, the fondling that seemed to be a turn on for her husband was turning her all the way off.
To get you started, I’ve listed 25 little ways to touch your spouse all day long. Bonus: A lot of them are Grated enough that you don’t have to hide them from the kids.
She wasn’t entirely turned off by her husband’s desire to touch her. But she was turned off by the fact that the only time he touched her was to tell her “let’s get it on.” The signal he gave to let her know he wanted to be physically intimate just served as a reminder to her that most of the time, they were anything but.
1. Walk up to your spouse and give him or her a bear hug 2. Sit on your spouse's lap 3. Hold hands while you walk in public 4. Rest your hand on his/her or knee while you talk 5. Sit close when you are watching TV. 6. Kiss your spouse before you leave each day 7. Kiss him or her on the back of the neck 8. Give a forehead kiss 9. Give him or her a kiss on the cheek for no reason at all 10. Give a shoulder rub 11. Give a foot rub 12. Give a back rub 13. Grease your spouse’s scalp 14. Lotion his or her back 15. Lotion his or her hands 16. Nibble on your
This story isn’t at all rare. Couples don’t touch all day, all week or all month and still expect to feel the connection to one another when the lights go out. The truth is that we can’t neglect each other all day and expect to feel passion at the end of it. Passion and intimacy has to build, starting first thing in the morning. In many ways we need to essentially be “making love” to our spouses all day.
touching each other (don't be stingy with the love taps.) Your challenge: Pick at least two things off the list and do them today. Repeat throughout the week!

Get Close
If you’re wondering how you can make love all day when you have other obligations like a job, kids and household responsibilities, it’s not as hard as it seems. Remember those early days in your marriage of not being able to keep your hands off of each other? You can start to feel that way again by making it a point not to keep your hands off of each other. If all day feels like foreplay, the transition into the bedroom will be a lot more natural. It’s easier to keep a fire going that’s already lit than to start a new one from scratch.

Area Teams Take Top Honors in DCCCD Academic Bowl No mind was left behind during the Dallas County Community College District's 2014 African American Male Academic Bowl – aptly titled "Aiming for the Stars." In this elementary/ middle school "battle of the brains," 24 teams competed in an event that is a cross between the academic bowls of 40 years ago and today's popular "Jeopardy" show. Students from schools across the Dallas/ Fort Worth area (and even Austin!) participated in the bowl, which celebrated its 5th anniversary; the competition was held at the University of Texas at Dallas on Sat., Jan. 25, 2014. Winning teams include members from Dallas, Duncanville and Fort Worth. “Marking our 5th anniversary was important and exciting,” said David Robinson, the event’s organizer, who started the bowl when he worked in DCCCD’s outreach office. “We welcomed boys from Austin, Fort Worth, Frisco, Irving, Dallas and beyond who came with their team coaches and – in the name of academics – showed us all just how smart they are.” (Robinson recently joined the UT-Dallas office of diversity and community engagement recently, where he continued to work on this year’s event.) The annual team-based competition of brain teasers and crowd pleasers is geared toward young African-American men in grades 4 through 8. After five years of competition, DCCCD's academic bowl is popular recurring event that has an excellent track record – a program in which no mind is left behind. "We've talked to the boys (who competed) and asked them what they've learned," added Robinson. "Almost every boy – 96 percent, in fact – has told us this event motivates them to learn more and finish PAGE 10

school. That's what we set out to do." The two groups of teams – each comprising 4th- and 5th-graders or 6th through 8th graders – demonstrated their knowledge and skills by answering questions and scoring points in five categories: African-American history; science; mathematics; African-American "firsts"; and geography. The winners were: Elementary school (4th and 5th grades) division winners: Duncanville Tigers Youth Organization, Team Black – Kaleb Berry, Jeremiah Howard, Chandler Rotich and team coach Lakeisha Berry Elementary school (4th and 5th grades) division runners-up: St. Phillip, Team C – Xavier Nixon, Jaali Hawkins, Chase Kennedy and team coach Kevin Crawford Middle school (6th through 8th grades) division winners: Fort Worth Independent School District, Young Men’s Leadership Academy – Luis Chabes, Clarence Smith, Jacob Crockett and team coach Porsche Sanders Middle school (6th through 8th grades) division runners-up: Duncanville Tigers Youth Organization, Team Gold – Kolby Randolph, Kevin Berry, Jonathan Howard and team coach LaShonda Wiggs First-place winners each received a Samsung Galaxy tablet, and runners-up each won a Kindle Fire. Let's set the record straight. There would be no Black history without African-Americans who made history, or a significant contribution to it. And when you walk down the aisles and annals of our history you can't ignore the contributions of great pastors, preachers and Christian prophets in our gallery. One such man was the late Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor. In 1972, Dr. Proctor succeeded Reverend Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Powell was the most influential Black Congressmen in all of Black history. Not only did he wield power at the Abyssinian Baptist Church, but he had “church” in the halls of Congress. Born and raised in Norfolk, Va., Dr. Proctor studied at Virginia Union University in Richmond, the University of Pennsylvania, Crozer Theological Seminary and Yale
Divinity School and received a doctorate in theology in 1950 from Boston University. He was ordained in 1943 and went on to hold various posts in education, including the presidency of Virginia Union University, and administrative posts with the National Council of Churches, the Peace Corps in Nigeria and Washington, and the Office of Economic Opportunity and elsewhere before going to the Abyssinian Baptist Church. Proctor was a professor of Education at Rutgers University from 1969 to 1984 and preached, spoke and taught at numerous sites over his life’s span. He served on the boards of Middlebury College and other educational institutions. The books he wrote include ''How Shall They Hear and Effective Preaching for Vital Faith'' Dr. Proctor came into the historic Abyssinian Church in Harlem with a renewed and refocused effort to send
his church out into the world. He was an outstanding administrator and internationally astute. Even his sermons stirred souls to move past their own interests into action toward all of humanity. "We don't all start at the same “scratch line,” although there is one original position. We were born here (below the scratch line) and other start above the scratch line. Those of us that inherited benefits that we did not deserve, must turn around and help those who inherited deficits so they can rise up to the scratch line.” That sermon not only solidified his place and philosophy in the realm of Social Justice, but started a movement. The Samuel D Witt Proctor Conference (SDP) which is headed by Dallas’ Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes III, is fully operational and coming to Dallas. The opening service is free to the
SDP is no “one hit wonder”. Their work and their energies are expended throughout the year. Recently when President Barack Obama announced that federal contract workers would have the minimum wage raised to $10.10 an hour, it was a result in part of their lobby and labor. SDP has tentacles in Third World countries like Haiti who is already suffering but now many Haitians are facing banishment by their neighbors in the Dominican Republic. SDP works day in and day out for the liberation of all people, all over the world. They are actively fighting against Mass Incarceration and Minimum Sentencing which is the prevailing issue in on our community. SDP is about Pan Americanism, Pan Africanism…Pan Humanism. Go to http://sdpconference.info/ to get more info. But if you want to see some history and some history makers, come to the conference February 17-20th. Black history will be made…AGAIN! Vincent L. Worth International Airport, The Texas Turnpike Authority, the Texas Pension Review Board and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, he still found time to reach out to serve underserved communities through service on the boards of the Dallas Legal Services Foundation, the Salvation Army, Operation Oasis, and other community service agencies. While serving on the boards of beloved institutions like the Texas A&M Association of Former Students and the Dallas Black Chamber were labors of love, Bill always brought to them his keen eye for seizing opportunity, risk management and of course, ethics above all. Bill, his legal partner Steve Bolden, and their colleagues at Mahomes Bolden decided to take up the mantle of building the kind of 21st century legal practice that few minority-owned firms have developed: a multi-practice boutique focused on complex transactional and corporate counseling, including private equity and mergers & acquisition transactions, for the fascinating and challenging issues of today’s marketplace. In 2013, Mahomes Bolden was fortunate to add Hyattye Simmons, former DART general counsel, as a partner to start the firm’s commercial litigation practice. Mas-Tek Engineering is grateful for the success it has experienced over the past 19 years and is further grateful for the NCTRCA D/M/WBE Program that assists firms, like MTE, to overcome obstacles faced by most D/M/WBE firms. The economy is obviously a challenge all firms have faced. For a small, minority firm it is specifically difficult since during depressed economic times, the larger firms begin pursuing all projects, including those that typically would be too small for them. This dramatically increases the !

competition and reduces the opportunities for the small D/M/WBE firm. The significant challenge that Mas-Tek faced was dealing with the death of its founder, Cornelius Mason. The way that this tragedy was overcome is truly a story that bears telling. Stephen Mason, Cornelius’ son, was thrust into the role of President of the firm. Prior to this time, Steve had started working with his father in the laboratory, simply helping to maintain the lab and equipment. He closely observed his father and Mas-Tek’s technicians and ultimately grew to manage the Construction Materials Testing services of the firm. Steve was 21 when his father died, but he determinedly stepped in to lead the firm. Realizing the numerous challenges he faced with marketing, accounting, continuing to serve the firm’s existing clients and securing others, he immediately sought out strong mentors willing to work with and advise him. Steve was virtually a sponge, soaking up every piece of information and new idea, retaining those that worked and dismissing those that did not. Unfortunately, he faced a few attempts by others to take advantage of his situation of youth and inexperience for their own gain. Fortunately, Steve’s ability to read people and situations and the guidance of his mentors led him through these times with minor missteps. Steve has worked with a laser focus to hone his skills in leadership and management, seeking to surround himself with quality individuals sharing the same life and business philosophies. Today, Steve fills the role of President of Mas-Tek Engineering & Associates, Inc. with great confidence, capability and professionalism and is recognized by his peers as a leader in the industry. and Clark Funeral Home owners, allowed her to operate her agency out of the offices of the funeral home. By working closely with the Black and Clark staff, Linda gained significant experience, which was one of the first steps in satisfying a lifelong dream – to own her own funeral home. After the passing of then-owner Otis Clark in 1999, a series of court-appointed administrators were brought in to oversee the funeral home and the estate of the Clark family, signaling to Linda, and the Black and Clark staff, that a sale of this staple in Dallas’ African American community could be on the horizon. “I thought it would be sad for someone else or for some large corporation to purchase this funeral home without me putting forth an effort to try to maintain ownership.” This concern was echoed by Mr. Clark’s widow, who encouraged Linda to keep the Black and Clark tradition alive. Unfortunately, Linda lacked the financial means to purchase the funeral home and her attempts to buy it from the first two court-appointed administrators were denied. Disappointed, yet unwavering in her resolve to purchase the funeral home, Linda pushed on. In a conversation with the third court-appointed administrator, Linda openly shared her dream. “I told her that I truly wanted to buy the place. I explained to her – and everybody – that I didn’t have any money, but I had faith in God that this was what I was destined to do.” Linda learned that she would have to secure $1.5 million dollars to purchase the funeral home. Using a loan secured through a company which specializes in lending to small insurance and death care businesses, she was able to purchase Black and Clark, include three long-time employees as co-owners and initiate remodeling and beautification projects to ensure the facility, originally built in 1968, stayed current with the highest standards in funeral homes. Her mission is clear – to bring Black and Clark Funeral Home to the prominence it once held. Through her faith, hard work and the support of her Black and Clark family, she remains confident that she will fulfill this vision as she continues to lead Black and Clark Funeral Home into the future. Eight Simple Stressbusters By Henry S. Miller, Author of The Serious Pursuit of Happiness: Everything You Need to Know to Flourish and Thrive Got stress? Stress is a part of a normal life that you can’t really avoid. The good news? You have more power than you realize to control stress before it prevents you from living the life you want to lead. Here are 8 simple stressbusters to help you: 1. Breathe Slowly and Deeply Before you react to the next stressful event, first take 3 deep breaths and consciously release each breath slowly. If you have more time, try a relaxation technique, such as meditation or guided imagery, before deciding how to handle the situation. 2. Speak More Slowly If you feel overwhelmed at any time, deliberately slow down the pace of your speaking. You will appear less anxious and more in control of the situation. Stressed people tend to speak fast and breathlessly. If you slow down, you’ll find you can think more clearly and react more reasonably to stressful situations. 3. Take a Break Outdoors Take advantage of the healing power of fresh air and sunshine. Just 5 minutes outside on a balcony or terrace can be rejuvenating. If you have more time, 30 minutes of sunshine has proven positive benefits. 4. Check Your Posture Hold your head and shoulders upright. Avoid slumping or stooping: bad posture leads to muscle tension, pain, and increased stress. If you are behind a desk during the day, avoid repetitive strain injuries and sore muscles by making sure your workspace is ergonomic, and take 5 minutes every hour to walk around or stretch. 5. Drink Plenty of Water and Eat Small, Nutritious Snacks Fight dehydration and hunger—they can provoke aggressiveness and exacerbate feelings of anxiety and stress. Drink plenty of water always have small and nutritious snacks available on hand, such as fruit, string cheese, or a handful of nuts. PAGE 27
!
6. Do One Thing Today Take control of your time. Every day, do at least one simple thing you’ve been putting off: return a phone call, make a doctor’s appointment, or file the paperwork piling up on your desk. Taking care of one nagging responsibility will energize you and improve your attitude! You might even find that completing one task inspires you to move on to the next one. At the end of each day, try planning your schedule for tomorrow using a calendar or day planner that works for you. 7. Reward Yourself after a Stressful Day At the end of the day, set aside any work concerns, housekeeping issues, or family concerns for at least a few minutes. Allow yourself a brief period of time to fully relax before bedtime each day—even if it’s only taking a relaxing bath or spending 30 minutes with a good book. Remember, you need time to recharge. Don’t spend this time planning tomorrow or doing chores you didn’t get around to during the day. You’ll be much better prepared to face another stressful day if you give yourself a brief reward of some free time. 8. Practice Letting Go When your next inevitably stressful situation comes up, make a conscious choice not to become upset. Just let it go. Don’t waste your energy on situations where it is not deserved. Managing your anger is a proven stress reducer. There’s no way to avoid stress, but you can be proactive in managing it. Here’s wishing you a happy life with less stress!

In our library Wellness Advocate Brings Health, Healing and Hope to National Cancer Prevention Month (GASTONIA, NC) Health advocate, wellness coach and educator Ann Malkmus is marking the start of Cancer Prevention Month this February with the national release of her new book Unravel the Mystery, A Simple Effective Approach to Beating Cancer, a comprehensive guide to unconventional steps individuals can take to harness their bodies’ natural healing abilities to fight the disease. The book is Malkmus’ latest work that addresses both prevention and recovery of cancer which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sites as the second leading cause of death in the United States by integrating diet and lifestyle changes to complement traditional therapy. The book (1) pinpoints key toxins that promote cancer and the dietary and environmental steps to fight them; (2) outlines userfriendly steps to reduce risk; and (3) shares crucial information and actions that people with cancer and their caregivers can take to support their bodies while working with oncologists on the road to recovery. This month, Malkmus will donate 100 copies of the book’s initial run to people fighting cancer and families in cancer treatment centers and support groups in her home state of North Carolina along with releasing a limited edition e-book at an introductory price of 99 cents to spread the knowledge and potentially help save the lives of millions. “Where there is breath, there is hope,” exhorts Malkmus. “When we harness the
miraculous, self-healing power of our bodies -- through nutrition, simple lifestyle changes and detoxification -- we can and will experience renewed, vibrant health. A “must read” for individuals with cancer or anyone who is supporting someone battling the disease Unravel the Mystery demystifies today’s leading research, answers key questions and most importantly lays out a clear guide to help people beat cancer. Malkmus’ book is much more than a diet and nutrition guide it is an empowering tool that includes a cancerrecovery “checklist” list that individuals should incorporate in working proactively with their oncologists. It also recommends nutritionally powerful foods along with other effective methods to help create a healthy immune system. A former college dean and current educator, wellness consultant and lecturer, Malkmus has managed health and wellness training programs reaching more than 10,000 individuals in one seminar, and impacting hundreds of thousands throughout the United States, Canada and Africa. She currently serves as the chief of education for The Hallelujah Diet! ™ one of the country’s leading health and wellness brands which has been proven to combat nutritional deficiency, reduce toxicity and improve overall health. Malkmus speaks at conferences and events throughout the world while sitting beside some of the world’s leading cancer doctors, registered dieticians and nutritionists.

Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
