The Lap Log is made of sustainable materials, including certified organic 100% cotton twill and naturally grown buckwheat hulls. Message to the People... Glad for this class of 2014

t. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church Journalist Rochelle Riley kicked off the inaugural DFW-ABC (now DFWABJ) urban journalism workshop at Lincoln Humanities and Communications Magnet, 25 years ago. There are so many students who have gone on to make us Cheryl Smith proud through their work in their chosen field of studies. Despite a cut in financial support, DFW-ABJ continues to train young men and women and despite the cold weather this past weekend, and a late start, the legacy continues. The first day opened with orientation and a program overview. Students learned basics like protocol, the importance of deadlines, proper handshakes and dress codes. There was a panel of journalists discussing deciding on a career, obstacles and tips for being successful in the industry. After lunch, during which country/ western sensation IMAJ entertained the group and answered questions about her career, the students discussed their plans and were assigned mentors. Imaj, who is the daughter of actor, Philip Michael Thomas (Sparkle, Miami Vice) talked about being African American and entering into the world of Country Western Music, how she taught herself to play the guitar and sing in several different languages, and the need to support local artists. She is also an author, designer and artist. Imaj signed copies of the latest issue of the Garland Journal (she is the featured cover), and sang two of her songs. She also shared information about the Keep The Dream Alive campaign: http:// www.indiegogo.com/projects/imaj-keep-the-dream-alive. The following professionals joined us for the first day: Felicia Brown of Open Door Consulting, DFW-ABJ VP Eva Coleman, Secretary/Treasurer and workshop alum LaDonna Castro, Network of Hispanic Communicators -DFW and NAHJ’s Gary Pina, Damon Sayles, DFW-ABJ’s immediate past president Stephen Wright, Editor Ashley Harris, Reporter and workshop alum Paige Stewart, I Messenger Enterprises’ Becky Lewis and DFW-ABJ Board member Terry Allen. A special welcome to the area to Danielle Smith! She’s a talented, go-getter with a great personality and she’s looking for a job. This program is open to ALL students in a six-county radius, high-school through college. But guess what, if you have someone who does not quite fit those guidelines but they will commit to the program, have them contact me. When I think back to my teen years, there weren’t many journalists around interested in preparing young, aspiring journalists for the future. I have to give shout-outs to folks like Gerald Boyd, George E. Curry and Rochelle Riley for their visionary leadership. Then too, there’s the countless folks who have come since, who have dedicated their time, energy and resources to help our young people. Just imagine what it would be like if every profession found a way to engage our youth! And then there are the parents who support their young by making sure they get to the workshop. Over the years, I have run across the parents who didn’t care and then too, I have witnessed those parents who do everything possible to ensure success for their children. I salute them! As Mr. Curry says time and time again, we have to do all that we can for our children!

ACTRESS IRMA P. HALL ON HAND FOR FESTIVAL NAMED IN HER HONOR

More than 400 middle and high school students participated in the annual Irma P. Hall Theatre Arts Festival held recently at Wilmer-Hutchins High School. Hall, a well-known actress and former Dallas ISD teacher, was on hand to work with students as they showcased their talents in playwriting, directing, and acting. Students from 25 Dallas ISD theatre arts programs participated in a number of categories including original monologues, improvisation, physical acting, costume design and original 10-minute plays. For the first time in the festival’s eight-year history, Sunset High School took home a prestigious Irma Award which is presented to the high school teams that win gold medals in three categories: playwriting, directing and acting. Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts also won two Irma Awards. Middle school students were awarded individual medals. The performances were judged by a panel of collegiate and professional directors and actors. The festival was supported by the faculty at UNT, Shakespeare Dallas, Le Theatre de Marionette, Cara Mia Theater, Jubilee Theater, Dallas Theater Center, The Black Academy of Arts and Letters, The Dallas African American Museum, Junior Players and others. Students from Thomas Jefferson High School were also on hand to serve as contest managers. Ms. Hall, a Matriarchal supporting actress of film and television, was a proud teacher of English and Foreign Languages for nearly 30 years. Ms. Hall taught on behalf of the Dallas ISD for 27 of those 30 years. Upon retirement, she took to the stage and won numerous awards. Ms. Hall has been honored with the Cannes Film Festival Special Jury Award, been inducted into the Texas and Spindletop Film Hall of Fame and has had a street named after her in Chicago.

Founder of Urban Bush Women receives $25,000, artistic residency at Meadows The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University has announced the recipient of its fifth annual Meadows Prize arts residency – choreographer Jawole (pronounced JAHwoe-lay) Willa Jo Zollar, the founder and artistic director of New York-based dance company Urban Bush Women (UBW). The Meadows Prize is awarded to pioneering artists and scholars who are active in a discipline represented by one of the academic units within the Meadows School. Zollar founded Urban Bush Women in 1984 as a performance ensemble dedicated to exploring the use of cultural expression as a catalyst for social change. Under Zollar’s leadership, UBW has toured five continents and has performed at venues including Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Kennedy Center. Over the course of her career, Zollar has developed a unique approach to choreography that empowers artists to strengthen their involvement in cultural organizing and civic engagement – an approach that has evolved into UBW’s acclaimed Summer Leadership Institute. In addition to 34 works for UBW, Zollar has choreographed works for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Philadanco, University of Maryland and Virginia Commonwealth University, among others. “We’re very excited to welcome Jawole Zollar to the Meadows School as our fifthyear recipient of the Meadows Prize arts residency,” said Dean of the Meadows School of the Arts José Antonio Bowen. “Jawole’s work with the UBW embodies the incredible impact that innovative artists can have on their communities – an invaluable lesson for our students at the Meadows School and our broader Dallas community.” Zollar will conduct the first half of her residency at SMU February 17-28, working with Meadows dance students to restage her recent work Chalabati, which she originally choreographed for the UBW repertoire. The students will perform Chalabati as part of Meadows’ Spring Dance Concert, taking place March 26-30. For the second part of her residency November 10-21, Zollar will return to Meadows to conduct workshops with students and give them critical insight into the professional development process of a new work planned for Urban Bush Women, Walking with ʼTrane...Chapter 3. The new dance suite, which is inspired by Coltrane’s formidable legacy and his seminal work A Love Supreme, is taking a cinematic approach to the jazz legend’s life with the help of composers/conceptual artists Mendi and Keith Obadike and playwright/director Talvin Wilks, with whom students will have a chance to collaborate. “The Meadows School is a leader in the field of arts education, particularly for integrating community engagement and interdisciplinary practice into the standard arts curriculum,” said Jawole Zollar. “I’m thrilled to be this year’s Meadows Prize recipient and look forward to collaborating

Willa Jo Zollar

with Meadows students to explore the creative process on multiple levels.” Inaugurated in October 2009, the Meadows Prize is presented annually to up to two pioneering artists. It includes support for a four-week residency in Dallas, in addition to a $25,000 stipend. In return, recipients are expected to interact in a substantive way with Meadows students and collaborating arts organizations, and to leave a lasting legacy in Dallas, such as a work of art that remains in the community, a composition or piece of dramatic writing that would be performed locally, or a new way of teaching in a particular discipline. A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar trained with Joseph Stevenson, a student of the legendary Katherine Dunham. She earned a B.A. in dance from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and an M.F.A. in dance from Florida State University. In 1980 she moved to New York City to study with Dianne McIntyre at Sounds in Motion. In 1984 Zollar founded Urban Bush Women (UBW) as a performance ensemble dedicated to exploring the use of cultural expression as a catalyst for social change. In addition to 34 works for UBW, she has created works for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Philadanco, University of Maryland, Virginia Commonwealth University and others, and with collaborators including Compagnie Jant-Bi from Senegal and Nora Chipaumire. In 2006 she received a New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie) for her work as choreographer/ creator of Walking With Pearl…Southern Diaries. Featured in the PBS documentary Free to Dance, which chronicles the African American influence on modern dance, Zollar was designated a Master of Choreography by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2005. Her company has toured five continents and has performed at venues including Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Kennedy Center. UBW was selected as one of three U.S. dance companies to inaugurate a cultural diplomacy program for the U.S. Department of State in 2010. In 2011 Zollar choreographed visible with Chipaumire, a theatrical dance piece that explores immigration and migration. In 2012 Zollar was a featured artist in the film Restaging Shelter, produced and directed by Bruce Berryhill and Martha Curtis, and currently available to PBS stations. Zollar developed a unique approach to enable artists to strengthen effective involvement in cultural organizing and civic engagement, which evolved into UBW’s acclaimed Summer Leadership Institute. She serves as director of the Institute, founding artistic director of UBW. !

Congressman Lewis will speak at Prayer Breakfast By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

The scripture, “We who are strong must bear the infirmities of the weak, and Hon. Eddie Bernice not seek to Johnson please ourselves,” defines the life’s work of the last surviving speaker at the 1963 March on Washington. Georgia Congressman John Lewis is a civil rights icon who played a key role during that march, and in the movement that changed America. On February 24th, Congressman John Lewis, will be in Dallas to speak at my 21st annual prayer breakfast. During his speech 50 years ago, Congressman Lewis echoed the sentiments of that scripture. Congressman Lewis talked about the necessity of improving the lives of sharecroppers who worked for less than three dollars each day, and for maids who worked full-time but

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

Targeted but not worried

earned only $5.00 each week while cleaning the homes of others. The then 23 year-old student, demanded that the Congress of the United States pass “meaningful legislation” that would give millions of people an opportunity to escape the ravages of poverty, find jobs, and become members of the middle class. He was not asking the government to give people a handout, but instead he asked for a level playing field so that all Americans could get a hand up. Congressman Lewis’s speech, his work, and the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and so many others, led President Lyndon Baines Johnson to declare a “war on poverty” which, with the aid of a compassionate and wiling Congress, offered millions of American citizens an open hand so that their lives, and the lives of their children might improve.

These same fights for a livable minimum wage and equal pay for women are still being fought today, 50 years later. During his recent State of the Union address President Barack Obama, who was weeks short of his second birthday during the 1963 march, asked a joint session of Congress to give poor working class Americans a livable minimum wage, and to confront the blatant reality of income inequality in America that grows rapidly each day. A recent written report stated that nearly 24 percent of all inner-city residents in Dallas live below the poverty line. The numbers are similar to those found in many of our larger cities, and rural areas. I know that you will agree with me when I say that the situation is unacceptable and must be addressed and rectified. This is an issue that my fellow Democrats in Congress and I are focused on.

In 1963, a youthful John Lewis marched for “jobs and freedom.” He is coming to Dallas because the reasons for the march are still uncompleted. No doubt he will use the same words that he articulated on August 28th, 1963 when he concluded his speech by saying, “Wake up America! Wake up!”

your back and volunteering to be target practice for life’s live fire exercises. I used that analogy before about celebrating one’s faith and thereby giving the devil an easy target in a crowd, on a bus, in your marriage, on your job or even in church. Publicly proclaim God and you will be tested. I have come to believe, as long as you’re not doing anything to attract Satan’s attention, you probably won’t. If you buy into the premise that life is a random series of events and challenges , that somehow you live as an insignificant whim of the universe, or there are no eternal consequences for your actions, then I believe Satan need not worry about where you’ll end up. He has your room already reserved. He has no reason to seek you out. How does the movie title say it; Dead Man Walking? The title seems to Marcbetter Morialthan I can. make myBypoint However, if you just pay attention to God’s listen to Jesus’ Marc Word, Morial is the CEO teaching of and attempt to abide by the lessons of the National Urban League scripture, please understand the devil will become intent on wreaking havoc on and in your world. You see, he, like the Lord, is in this thing for keeps.

Most of us cannot get our minds around this because few of us have ever been put to the test of “putting it all on the line.” Maybe too simplistic of an example is when you were a kid (way back in the day) and you played marbles for keeps for the first time. It might have been when you gambled with real money or placed a significant sports bet and lost. Perhaps you gave your heart and your treasure away for the first time and got burned. That sinking feeling was enough to avoid playing for keeps ever in life again and maybe even in love. The hard part to comprehend is that the devil is playing for keeps all the time. This is his Super Bowl and your soul is the trophy. To me that’s what makes God’s mercy and grace so extraordinary. In God’s game, and it is God’s game, it’s never over until you take your last breath. You see God’s got next. He is the originator of the game and the creator of the rules. He’s fixed the game in our favor and all we have to do is read the rule book. You never foul out. You never

get disqualified and believe it or not you never get injured. As long as you’re moving through life with an eye on Christ and an ear for the Word and a heart stuck on others, you win. Hear me clearly! If you let the devil convince you it’s a lost cause, this game is no fun, just quit, then he wins because you wind up thinking it’s not worth your time and effort and life is certainly not worth going all in. Not playing God’s game is playing Satan’s game. Satan’s is like expecting to beat the house in Vegas. Soon you’ll be getting on a plane wondering where the good times and all the money went. God’s game is more like bingo where you know if you play long enough, the prize is yours because everybody wins. Jesus guaranteed it. May God bless and keep you

Please join the I To Be Equal

By James A. Washington

Hopefully, you agree with me that life is indeed a wonderful and spectacular journey. As Christians we know that this trip can be and often is somewhat of a hazardous adventure. Deliberately choosing the path that Jesus walked is by no means easy and to do it publicly, as I have often said is tantamount to putting a bulls eye on

INTERNSHIPS Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson offers internship opportunities during the fall, spring and summer for undergraduate and graduate students who are currently in their sophomore year or later and who are looking to supplement their academic coursework with an educational working experience. Students will further develop their research and communication skills during their internship and learn firsthand about the interworking of a Congressional District Office. Anyone interested in applying, please e-mail your resume to Luke.Harvey@mail.house.gov. Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. She is the first registered nurse elected to the US Congress.

THIS IS BLACK HISTORY As always, the sun was shining in Sunny South Dallas as the owners of Two Podners Restaurant, Fred Conwright and James Runnels announced plans for the Two Podners Retail Eateries. Elected officials and dignitaries talked about the need for development in the southern sector of Dallas and praised Two Podners for 34 years of quality service, good food and providing jobs. They reminded attendees of the battle, over 24 years ago, when they received word that executives of Ponderosa Steakhouse were coming after the restaurant, then called The Ponderosa, claiming that the Dallas store was attempting to capitalize off their business. The Dallas community closed ranks and after a name changing contest, the business remained open and has continued to flourish.

UNT Dallas College of Law prepares to open Standing before a crowd of 250 persons gathered on January 16, 2014 to learn more about the UNT Dallas College of Law, State Senator Royce West enthusiastically applauded the work that has been done to prepare the law school to open in August. Sharing that a legal education allowed him to purse his dreams, he encouraged attendees to consider applying to UNT College of Law. Sen. West was instrumental in the legislation that created this newest public law school which will seat its first class in August 2014. UNT Dallas College of Law offers a day and evening program that revolves around three core principles: 1) affordability; 2) opportunity; and 3) excellence. UNT Dallas College of Law is committed to expanding access to legal education and careers in the law to a diverse population of students creating a mix of younger students and working professionals pursuing a legal education. The school aims to enroll a diverse student body with a variety of perspectives, experiences and viewpoints enhancing the education of all students. It believes that, through education of a diverse student body, the law school is doing its part to increase access to justice and legal services for underserved communities where the need is great. Founding dean and former federal judge, Dean Royal Furgeson, announced that the tuition for full time members of the inaugural class will be $12,500, almost half of what is charged by other public law schools. Affordability of a legal education is one of the paramount goals of UNT Dallas College of Law and positively impact the widening of access to the law for everyone. “Our law school is … about opportunity,” remarked Dean Furgeson.

Sen. Royce West

“While many say there are too many law schools now, we say there are not enough law schools opening up the opportunity for a legal education.” The law school encourages persons who have thought about becoming a lawyer but thought that law school was not possible due to location, cost, or other factors to apply. While every applicant must take the LSAT, the law school takes a holistic approach to admissions and considers the applicant’s entire record, not just the LSAT score. The school’s commitment to diversity is reflected in its founding administration and faculty. Former SMU Professor, Ellen Pryor, serves as the Associate Dean for Academics. Dallas attorneys Cheryl Wattley and Tom Perkins have been named as members of the initial faculty; Valerie D. James, Esq., is the Assistant Dean and Director of Admissions and Rebecca Garza Green, Esq., will serve as the Assistant Dean of Students. Anyone interested in learning more about the law school can go to the website http://lawschool.untsystem.edu or call 214-752-5981.

NAACP applauds Attorney General Holder for Speaking Out against Felony Disenfranchisement (Washington, DC)-- The NAACP commends Attorney General of the United States Eric Holder for speaking out against laws prohibiting people with felony convictions from voting even after they have served the terms of their sentences. The NAACP has been actively engaged in campaigns in Florida, Iowa, Virginia, Delaware and other states to bring the practice to an end. "By perpetuating the stigma and isolation imposed on formerly incarcerated individuals, these laws increase the likelihood they will commit future crimes," Holder said at a Washington, DC, symposium on sentencing laws. Founder of Tacky Box believes in collective effort to stop bullying On the eve of International STAND UP to Bullying Day, Chris Kent Phelps -mother of two, inventor of the Tacky Box and crusader for kindness -- says, "I have a dream, and I have a plan. I believe we can collectively make the world a kinder place, one child at a time, by celebrating love and kindness at an early age, before bullies are made. "We must reach each child before the fear of rejection has been introduced and reinforce love and kindness. When the heart is filled with love instead of fear -- words, actions and thoughts will be congruent and unkindness will be eradicated." International STAND UP to Bullying Day, February 28, 2014, is a special semi-annual event in which participants sign and wear a pink "pledge shirt" to take a visible, public stance against bullying. It is a day devoted to recognizing bullying and supporting victims. How does Kent Phelps hope to achieve her lofty goal? She discovered

how to work with children to turn negative behavior, like bullying, around into positive life-long habits. The Tacky Box Set is an effective tool that encourages and teaches children to make positive choices in language and behavior. It includes an authentic Tacky Box, a copy of Max's (or Margo's) Magnificent Choice and a notepad. The story of Max and Margo is a fun way for children to see the positive rewards of choosing kindness. Whenever children hear tacky words or see tacky behavior, they write the actions down, lock them away in their Tacky Box and remove that action/word from their heart. When the book and box are used together, children are provided with both a visual and hands on lesson. Educator Connie Kean states, "It is critical that we teach children that their words do have an effect. Our thoughts and spoken words actually shape our own reality and deeply affect those around us. As we raise self-awareness in our children, there will be change for the better in our world. True, lasting change comes from how we educate the next generation. It is the self-awareness Tacky Box promotes that is the real gift." Kent Phelps says, "Children are not born to be mean -- they observe behavior that becomes acceptable to them. If we

can help our kids identify the power of their words and actions at an early age, then maybe, just maybe, we can help prevent children from turning into bullies." According to www.stopbullying.gov, there are three types of bullying -verbal, social and physical: Verbal bullying is saying or writing mean things. Verbal bullying includes: Teasing Name-calling Inappropriate comments Taunting Threatening to cause harm Social bullying, sometimes referred to as relational bullying, involves hurting someone's reputation or relationships. Social bullying includes: Leaving someone out on purpose Telling other children not to be friends with someone Spreading rumors about someone Embarrassing someone in public Physical bullying involves hurting a person's body or possessions. Physical bullying includes: Hitting/kicking/pinching Spitting

FEBRUARY 14, 2014

Tripping/pushing Taking or breaking someone's things Making mean or rude hand gestures Even though International STAND UP to Bullying Day happens twice a year, Kent Phelps believes that "to truly reduce bullying, it needs to be an everyday effort. It is our goal to see the Tacky Box Classroom Set in every classroom across the country. I have a plan to encourage both corporate and individual sponsors to help make this happen." To help create good decisions to offset the roots of bullying behavior, the Tacky Box Set is available for purchase at www.TackyBox.com. Each set costs $29.95 plus shipping and includes an authentic Tacky Box, a 32-page Margo's (or Max's) Magnificent Choice book, and a notepad illustrated with monkeys to use for writing down tacky words and actions. The 2014 Black Mystery Series

Eight Negroes! Quit Playin’

If you can’t guess which two words bound and gagged me, let me help you…Eight Negroes! I am dying to know who they are. I want to follow the path of their DNA because at least seven of them must have come to Dallas. I said I wasn’t gonna write nothing scornful or pernicious during this Black History Month…but the will to keep that promise is far beyond my pledge to be real.

Let me begin by establishing protocol and pedigree. I happen to have been one of those who were born in Dallas and have been here for the span of my lifetime. Went to Dallas public schools, worked several jobs, been active in the community both North and South. I love Dallas as much as anyone in the world. It saddens me to say that had that historic bus boycott have been in

We live in America, a nation that thrives and thrills itself with the idea of majority rule. But in the throes of the worst forms of racism, segregation, and downright mean spirited mess, who were the eight Negroes on this bus? What were they thinking? Where were their values? Did they have any idea that freedom was on the move and poised to March?

Dallas Texas rather than Birmingham Alabama we might still be forced to back row seats on the DART rail. There is no plausible excuse for the immense difference in the qualities of life between people North and South; Black, White and Brown, poverty and affluence in Dallas. We have African-American serving in the capacity of Congress persons, State Senators and

By Vincent L. Hall

The Constitutional Rights Foundation capsulized the Montgomery Bus Boycott in two paragraphs, but there were only two words that held me hostage. “The NAACP saw Parks’ arrest as an opportunity to challenge segregation laws in a major Southern city. The NAACP called on Montgomery’s black political and religious leaders to advocate a oneday boycott protesting her arrest. More than 75 percent of Montgomery’s black residents regularly used the bus system. On the day of the boycott, only eight Negroes rode Montgomery’s buses. The success of the one-day boycott inspired black leaders to organize a long-term boycott. They demanded an end to segregation on the city’s buses. Until this demand was met, blacks would refuse to ride Montgomery’s buses. A young Baptist minister named Martin Luther King Jr. led the boycott.”

Representatives, Commissioner, City Council, Judges and most boards; you name it, we got somebody there. If you look at the Dallas bedroom communities, we dominate or participate in those offices as well. And while many lay the fault on those who've whom we have elected office, I cannot. We linger behind in Dallas because of a puny and pitiful followship. When it comes to dormant citizenship we are Eight to the 10th power. We continually elect mayors and allow them to play that “South Side initiative” game. We allow our Governor to boast that Texas has more millionaires than any other state while simultaneously denying healthcare to the poor. Texas ranks close to the bottom in caring for our indigent population, high in incarcerations per rata and Numero Uno in executions. Honoring the cause célèbre cannot be the foundation of Black history. We love Martin and Malcolm but they are dead. Black history is made every time you return to your home without any knowledge, understanding or empathy for your neighbors who are languishing in poverty and navigating unsafe neighborhoods. We may never know who those eight Negroes were, but we know that their cousins and their ilk are alive but not well in Dallas Texas. Vincent L. Hall is an author and award-winning columnist.

African Royalty Tours Dallas during 2014 Black History Month During this Black History Month the Dallas area will be treated to African royalty when the Honorable Samia Yaba Christina Nkrumah the only daughter of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah founding President of the African nation of Ghana visits the area. Much like President John F. Kennedy’s short popular tenure Dr. Nkrumah’s presidency too was short and also left an impact on the world. Indeed the two men became close personal friends when Dr. Nkrumah visited America following his election. Speaking in Ghana at a memorial observation after President Kennedy was gunned down in Dallas, Dr. Nkrumah reflected, “In fact I think I am right in saying that I was the first Head of State to whom he granted an audience immediately after he had been sworn in as the President of the United States.” And like President Kennedy’s heralded inaugural ceremonies Dr. Nkrumah drew hundreds of world leaders to Ghana to observe his 1957 inauguration including then Vice President Richard M. Nixon and Dr. Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King.

Nana Akwasi Afrane Okpese the Ejisuhene "ruler of Ejisu. In 1900 Yaa Asantewaa led an Ashanti rebellion known as the “War of the Golden Stool” against British colonialism. Tour Sponsor is Argus Corporation with offices in Dallas,

Honorable Samia Yaba Christina Nkrumah Madame Samia too is finding a place for a role in African leadership. She recently won Chairmanship of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) a national party founded by her father. Winning this chairmanship made her one of only three women in Africa leading a national party. Madame Samia is seen as the equivalent of an African Queen by many across the continent who are comparing her to the famous Queen Yaa Asantewaa (pronounced YAY A-san-TE-waa). Queen Yaa in 1840 was appointed queen mother of Ejisu of the Ashanti Empire now part of modern-day Ghana by her brother

Houston, San Antonio & El Paso Texas. Below is the Official Dallas Tour Itinerary for the Honorable Samia Yaba Christina Nkrumah: Feb 27: Community Leaders Reception the Black Academy of Arts & Letters (TBAAL) -7 PM

The most recent data shows over 10,000 students enrolled. 1. What Largest HBCU Rankings Mean for You A large college isn’t right for everybody. However, if you crave the busy, exciting experience of a large campus filled with likeminded students, one of the top 10 HBCUs would make an excellent choice. Remember to also base your decision on personal factors such as your chosen major and the type of atmosphere – urban, town or remote – which will make you feel at home. BRINGING YOU ENLIGHTENING, EDUCATIONAL, EMPOWERING, INSPIRING, THOUGHT-PROVOKING INFORMATION

From Pastor Shepherd’s Desk “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you wi! perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6 King James Version) * Dear Christian Brothers and Sisters, I greet you in the name of God the Father, Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit, our Comforter and guide. Words cannot begin to describe the feelings I have at this moment. As I reflect back over the last two months here, the only word I can use to sum up the experience is “awesome!” What a wonderful time we have had in this anointed place. Serving as Pastor here is truly a humbling calling that I do not take lightly or for granted. I speak truthfully from my heart when I say that I needed Mt. Moriah more that Mt. Moriah needed me. I thank God for this wonderful opportunity that He has bestowed upon me. Serving as Pastor here has helped me in my spiritual growth through the preaching and teaching of God’s Word. * We have been witnesses to the magnificent power of Jesus Christ throughout our lives. If there are any doubters, we should be able to testify that God is alive and still in the miracle working business. I am

thrilled that we completed our Daniel Fast and I see the fruit of that labor. I strive to deliver the Word of God in plain and simple terms where we all can get an understanding of what God is trying to tell us. My greatest desire as Pastor/ Preacher/ Teacher is to see lives transformed through the hearing and doing of the Word of God. The Lord has shown me that my labor is not in vain. * The divine prescription for the church is found in the Word of God. It is my prayer that we as a church family will continue to take, eat, and drink as prescribed by the Lord. It is also my prayer that we will abide in His Word and continue to bring forth fruit, more fruit, and much fruit. Thank you Mt. Moriah for allowing me to pastor with joy. Let us always look to Jesus and live for His return: loving one another in brotherly love and serving Him in spirit and in truth.

A HIGHWAY TO FREEDOM THE QUEST FOR PEACE As we stand here today, At the crossroads of freedom and equality, The celebration of the emancipation proclamation must not become a novelty. That great march was the start, To engage a nations heart, To pull back the veil of discrimination and oppression And to cease and release the rights of a people, And honor our Declarations intended predilections. And though we have lived to behold, A man of color residing in our countries most prestigious house, There is still so much work to do, We must remain vigilant and persistent, Of this there can be no doubt. His coming was the hailing of an inspired notion, That we can be what we choose when motivated by devotion. He exemplifies that we are not separate and often more than equal, His second term in office is a historic sequel. We must strive to bring liberation through education.

Your Humble Servant in Christ, Dr. T. B. Shepherd, Pastor

We must teach our sons and daughters To look beyond their situations.

Noah’s Walk Houston— Community Advocate Noah Rattler, Author Nekisha Pickney and Illustrator Thaddeus Lavalais teamed up to create Noah’s Walk, an inspiring children’s book that tells the story of Rattler’s journey while walking 1,800 miles from Houston, TX, to Los Angeles, CA, to raise awareness for homelessness. Noah’s Walk tells the story of real life heroism as a young man who makes a decision to impact the life of others. Pickney is able to capture Noah’s odyssey as he encounters the elements, animals and friends who supported him along the way. The book also serves as a fun learning tool that highlight vocabulary, geography, and cultural cognizance. Noah’s Walk is set to release February 12th, in an effort to continue to raise awareness of homelessness in America and to encourage youth to become civically responsible. “I, like many before me, am doing what I can to make the world a better place. Noah’s Walk is an attempt to ignite and nurture the same fire in the hearts of future generations,” Rattler said. According to the State of Homelessness Report, there are over 633,782 homeless men, women and children in America and as many as 3.5 million people experience homelessness in a given year. Noah believes his walk has

had a positive impact in favor of the homeless population and by writing Noah’s Walk he and Nekisha are encouraging others to make a difference. “Noah’s story is one of self-sacrifice. He was not homeless, yet he identified a major problem in today’s society and did something to help. I’ve witnessed the fruit of the many seeds that Noah planted because of his journey. I’m sure that the Noah’s Walk children’s book will also touch the hearts of many,” Pickney said. Noah Rattler hails from Houston, Texas, where he graduated from John E. Codwell Elementary. When he isn’t raising awareness for homelessness, Noah spends his time coming up with plans to save the world!!! Or, at least make it a better place. Noah enjoys long walks through the desert, riding his bike in freezing rain, hashtags and other mysteries of the universe. For those so inclined, contact him @ www.twitter.com/ NoahRattler Nekisha Pickney is from Houston, Texas, and is a published author, freelance writer, poet and best of all she is the mother of three wonderful children! When she is not solving the mysteries of motherhood, Nekisha writes. Nekoosa’s mission is to shine light and spread life all over creation by using words. More of Nekisha Pickney’s work can be found on her website where she can also be contacted @ http://freeheartoftruth.com/.

Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.
